Welcome to the newsletter for We Love That!, Providence Heart Institute’s campaign to build the future of heart health.

Providence Heart Institute cares for more hearts in Oregon than anyone else. Each year we admit more than 16,000 heart patients to our hospitals and serve tens of thousands more in our clinics. We take this responsibility very seriously.

There’s a growing health gap in our country.

For people born in 1930, the difference in life expectancy between the richest 20 percent and the poorest 20 percent was six years.

For those born in 1960, it’s now 12 years.

Providence Heart Institute is committed to closing this gap. The heart of Providence’s Mission, at least for me, is our commitment to serve the poor and vulnerable. I’m incredibly thankful your generosity in joining this Mission.

DONORS CREATE MORE SECOND CHANCES FOR HEART HEALTH After his heart attack, Bill Line was terrified. Life was a blur of questions: “How far should I walk? Will I be able to work? What are my limits? Will I hurt myself if I do too much? What is too much?”

Heart attack survivor Bill Line is advocating to expand cardiac rehab facilities at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center.

As soon as he could, Bill began cardiac rehabilitation. “In twelve weeks, I lost 20 pounds,” he says. “After rehab, I lost 10 more.

Cardiac rehab changed my life.”

To bring life-changing care to more people, Providence Heart Institute is tripling its cardiac rehab capacity to serve more than 3,000 people per year. A gift from Steve and Donna Shepard helped to double capacity at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Now donors are helping to expand the center at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and creating a brand-new center at Providence Portland Medical Center.

“We serve far more heart patients than anyone else in Oregon,” says Dan Oseran, M.D., the Heart Institute’s executive medical director.

“For those who have had a serious cardiac event, cardiac rehab is the single most important thing they can do to reduce their risk of another event and improve their quality of life. Expanding these opportunities is a top priority.”

Centers include exercise machines and free weights to help patients rebuild their heart health, while individual coaching and state-ofthe-art heart monitoring keep everyone safe.

Patients also find classes, support from peers, and milestone celebrations to inspire their journey to greater health.

Bill Line recently spoke at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Foundation’s Gala at The Falls, where donors gave to quadruple the size of Providence Willamette Falls cardiac rehab center. “Providence prolonged my life,” he says. “You only have one heart and you need to take care of it.”

A $2 million gift from Tim and Mary Boyle has launched a new Heart Institute initiative to use cardiovascular outcomes research to make heart care more effective, responsive, and fair.

BOYLE GIFT TO UNLOCK THE POTENTIAL OF HEART CARE DATA Tim and Mary Boyle recently gave $2 million to launch the Center for Cardiovascular Analytics, Research and Data Science, or CARDS. Using computers and advanced analysis, CARDS will analyze data in millions of electronic medical records to find treatments that optimize and personalize heart care.

“We are grateful for this remarkable gift,” said Dave Underriner, chief executive Providence Health & Services, Oregon. “Gifts such as this allow us to continue providing the most innovative and comprehensive cardiac care in Oregon while growing as a global leader in heart data research.”

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. By 2030, it is estimated that over 40 percent of the population will have some form of heart disease at an annual cost to our health care system of well over $1 trillion. Cardiology has growing array of tools to fight this trend, but there are many unanswered questions about how to use them to achieve best outcomes.

According to Dan Oseran, M.D., executive medical director, Providence Heart Institute, the Boyles’ gift to create CARDS will allow the institute to leverage real-world experience to answer these questions.

“We’ve long been a national leader in analyzing data to improve cardiac care,” said Dr. Oseran.

“What’s new is the amount of data in electronic medical records, which is vastly more than in the past. The Boyles’ gift will allow us to unlock the potential of this data.”

The Boyle family experienced the devastation of heart disease first hand when Tim Boyle’s father, Neal Boyle, died from a heart attack in 1970 at age 47. Tim and Mary see CARDS’ potential to create personalized cardiac care out of these vast databases.

Tim noted, “Mary and I are thrilled to provide support for Providence’s cardiovascular research efforts and look forward to seeing the impact of these efforts for the people of Oregon and beyond.”

TY GLUCKMAN, M.D. – IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE The new medical director of Center for Cardiovascular Analytics, Research and Data Science, Ty Gluckman, M.D., joined Providence Heart Institute in pursuit of excellence. “I came here because I knew other physicians here – excellent, well-trained physicians – that I wanted to work with,” he says. “This is a great place to practice medicine and, as a system, Providence is well positioned to improve health care.”

“No matter how good we are, I always think we can do better,” he says. “What’s the highest quality care that responds to what the patient wants? That’s the North Star.”

Dr. Gluckman deeply appreciates Tim and Mary Boyle’s gift, and all heart institute donors.

“Philanthropy is an engine that drives health care innovation. I see philanthropy improve care at Providence every day.”

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Gluckman completed his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School and cardiac fellowship with The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he is an adjunct faculty member. His work has been published in journals including Archives of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA Cardiology, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, and the Journal of the American Heart Association. He led the development of a heart disease risk estimator app selected as the best medical app of 2014 and now used more than 7,000 times a day. Cardiology Today recently selected him as a “Next Gen Innovator.”

According to Dan Oseran, M.D, the institute’s executive medical director, “We are very fortunate to have someone of Ty’s intellect, drive, and national reputation to lead this initiative.”

While still in its early days, Dr. Gluckman has set some typically ambitious priorities for CARDS: reviewing variations in practice to deliver care more effectively and fairly; identifying care that delivers few benefits compared to its cost; and advancing care that responds to patients’ values.”

PARTNERS FOR YOUTH HEART HEALTH We’ve all seen the story: a young athlete collapses and dies on the track, football field, or basketball court. The cause: an undiagnosed heart condition.

James Beckerman, M.D., knows the story well. “A few years ago I had the privilege of meeting with families affected by this tragedy,” he says, “and I realized that there was a lot we could do to prevent it.”

In 2012, Dr. Beckerman started Play Smart, a program that provides free heart screenings to youth ages 12 to 18. Today, Play Smart has provided free screenings to more than 19,000 youth and identified nearly 1,300 who needed follow-up, some for potentially deadly conditions.

Play Smart’s progress is only possible because of outstanding support from donors and volunteers. “I feel honored to have partners who unite with us in this mission,” says Dr. Beckerman.

FIRST INC. Moving heart-screening equipment to reach thousands of youth in schools and parks is a big piece of work, a challenge tackled enthusiastically by First, Inc. An independent minority-owned company with over 40 years of experience in the office furniture installation and moving services business, First Inc. has transported Play Smart’s equipment to 350 screenings locations throughout northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. That’s more than 7,000 miles – all completely free of charge. “All of us at First, Inc. believe in Play Smart,” says co-owner Bob Huckabee. “Many of our crew members went

to some of the schools where we deliver the equipment. It’s great to see how many lives we can positively impact by supporting this program.”

THE GREENBRIER COMPANIES “Few things are as tragic as when a young, seemingly-healthy athlete’s heart suddenly stops while at play,” says Lorie Tekorius, Executive Vice President, CFO with The Greenbrier Companies and a member of the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation Council of Trustees. That’s why Greenbrier, a leading international supplier of freight rail transportation equipment and services, chose to give Play Smart the largest gift in Greenbrier history.

This year, it brought Play Smart screenings to its annual company picnic attended by several thousand employees and their families. “This cause is one that is dear to so many here at

Greenbrier,” says Tekorius. “If our efforts can help save even one child from a potentially deadly congenital heart condition, it will have been more than worth it.”

DAN AND PAULA KINNEY Paula and Dan Kinney have brought passion, expertise, and generosity to Providence for 30 years, Paula as an education leader and Dan as a leader in high tech. Paula currently serves on the Heart Advisory Board and as a trustee of Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation, while Dan serves on

the Providence Cancer Leadership Cabinet.

They have been avid supporters of Play Smart since its founding.

“Play Smart resonates with me personally and professionally,” says Paula. “My dad died at 42 from sudden cardiac arrest. As an educator, I know it’s critical to detect problems early, to enable young people to live healthy and successful lives.” Dan agrees, “Identifying problems early gives students the opportunity to cultivate long-term habits for prevention as adults.”

SPENCER BEST Spencer Best was playing basketball when it happened – sudden cardiac arrest. He was clinically dead for almost eight minutes. Just 16, Spencer had no symptoms of heart disease.

Myriad tests over a year never revealed why his heart stopped. Fortunately, Spencer survived and now has an S-ICD [subcutaneous implantable cardiac defibrillator] to restart his heart if it stops again.

This summer, he volunteered and organized several Play Smart screenings to reach more youth. As a teenager, Spencer says he and

his friends thought, “Nothing in the world could stop us.” But having almost died, he now encourages all teens to be screened.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen.

Sometimes there are cases like me, with no symptoms. And then it might be too late.”
