Elevating Care, Close to Home: A Campaign for Providence Newberg

Providence Newberg Medical Center stands as a beacon of hope and healing for the health of the surrounding community. Now we ask for your help to bring more services close to home for more patients.

Providence Newberg Health Foundation’s Board of Trustees is committed to taking our excellent care to the next level, by raising more than $1 million to expand cancer support services and cardiac rehabilitation right here in our community.

A lifesaving promise Samantha made a promise to her friend Beth, who died at 31 from breast cancer. Samantha promised she would have a mammogram every year once she turned 40.

Like clockwork, Samantha had her mammogram every August around her birthday. Each time she received a clean bill of health – until the seventh exam.

That time, her normal half-hour appointment turned into a six-hour ordeal. “They performed two biopsies that day,” said Samantha. “I left that afternoon knowing deep within me that I had breast cancer. Three days later it was confirmed.”

She began a two-year course of treatment that included chemotherapy and multiple surgeries.

During her treatment journey, Providence Newberg did not offer the full range of services she needed. Because her oncologist was located

in Portland, she spent a lot of time in the car traveling to appointments.

“One time I missed an appointment at Providence Portland Medical Center because of traffic. Although they were able to squeeze me in, it took 4 1/2 hours. After you receive treatment, all you want to do is go home,” said Samantha.

Population growth in Yamhill County has strained the capacity of current cancer services at Providence Newberg. With your help, we can nearly double the number of infusion chairs, provide more private space for long infusion appointments and expand exam rooms. This will enhance patients’ comfort and experience during their cancer journey.

An elephant on her chest It felt like an elephant was sitting on her chest.

Jan’s husband drove her to the hospital, but by the time they got there the pain was gone.

“As we sat in the parking lot, my husband asked what I wanted to do. I didn’t know, I felt fine,” explained Jan. “He said, ‘Maybe we should just get you checked out anyway.’ I almost went home.”

Within 24 hours, Jan had triple bypass surgery.

Not long after her surgery, Jan started cardiac rehabilitation, attending twice a week at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. She thrived in the supportive environment. Within a few weeks, she had lost 25 pounds and gained the confidence to exercise at home.

More second chances To create more second chances for people like Jan, Providence Heart Institute is creating a new cardiac rehabilitation center at Providence Newberg.

Building on the success of the heart institute’s fast-growing west Portland and Oregon City programs, cardiac rehabilitation at Providence

Newberg will bring life-changing care closer to home for hundreds of people each year.

Co-located with Providence Newberg’s other rehabilitation programs, such as physical and occupational therapies, the new cardiac rehab center will accommodate more than 400 patients and 8,000 visits each year.

Patients will find an attractive reception area with educational materials and inspiring videos featuring peers who have completed cardiac rehab and improved their heart health. Inside the new center, there will be plenty of exercise machines and free weights to help patients rebuild their heart health. Individual coaching and heart monitoring will keep everyone safe.

The new center will also host classes and peer group meetings to support patients in their journey to greater heart health. Educational cooking classes, yoga and meditation classes, along with other activities will be open to the entire community.

Cardiac rehab is critical to healing, yet long travel times often result in people quitting the program. By adding this service close to home, more of our patients will stick with it and live longer, healthier lives.

Some begin changes but stop because expert help and support are too far away. A new center for cardiac rehabilitation at Providence Newberg will help hundreds of people each year overcome these challenges.

Having a comprehensive cardiac rehab program on the Providence Newberg campus will make it easier for heart patients to attend classes and stick with the full course of classes.
