Philanthropic Opportunity Michael Kelley Endowed Chair for Cancer Research - $2 million gift/pledge On behalf of our dedicated physicians, clinical leaders and the community they serve at the Providence Cancer Institute, thank you for your consideration of this proposal to invest in a $2 million endowed chair position that will both honor Michael Kelley’s memory and ensure that world-class talent continues the Institute’s lifesaving work in treating and curing cancer.
A Generous, Beloved Member of the Community Michael Kelley was a loving and brilliant husband and dedicated father of four who had a stellar career as an attorney at the firm he co-founded, Haglund Kelley, LLC. Despite a demanding job and busy family life, Mike always made time for others, serving as a member of various nonprofit boards in the community while quietly helping those in need. Mike passed away in October 2020 after a 22-month battle with stage IV head and neck cancer. His treasured family extended their sincere gratitude to the amazing team at Providence Cancer Institute for the excellent care he received, including Mike’s primary physicians, medical oncologist Dr. Rom Leidner, radiation oncologist Dr. Marka Crittenden, as well as Drs. Walter Urba, Bryan Bell, Eric Tran, and Brian Piening; and the nurses, nursing assistants, researchers and other caregivers on the 11th floor of the Franz Cancer Center where Mike was treated.

Philanthropy at the Institute Philanthropy plays a vital role in supporting cancer treatment and research at the Providence Cancer Institute. As Bryan Bell, MD Medical Director of the Providence Head and Neck Cancer Program describes, “Government funding for cancer research is near an all-time low. That means we rely more than ever on philanthropy to discover new treatments.” Besides funding innovations in treatment, philanthropy has funded the Franz Cancer Center tower, the expansion and enhancement of its 11th floor, the new MR Linac, and the endowment of four endowed chairs.

In Memory of Michael Kelley To honor Mike’s legacy, the Providence Cancer Institute is establishing the Michael Kelley Endowed Chair for Cancer Research. Named endowed chairs represent the hallmark of exceptional clinical and research institutes, enabling them to recruit and retain the best physician leaders. This $2 million endowed chair position would honor a notable physician-leader by providing them with ongoing support to enhance and expand Providence Cancer Institute’s lifesaving work in the treatment of cancer.

How It Will Work The $2 million gift will establish a permanently restricted endowment, meaning that the principal of the fund will grow in perpetuity while a portion of the annual earnings will be directed by the endowed chair holder to enhance the cancer research program. Examples of endowed chair uses include: program development; research projects; new technology; lectures; new therapies; conferences and other activities that improve patient care and distinguish Providence as a site for hope and healing.
The Impact of the Michael Kelley Endowed Chair for Cancer Research To honor Mike and the indelible impact he had on his entire care team at Providence, we are launching an effort to create the Michael K. Kelley Endowed Chair for Cancer Research. When this $2 million chair is funded, our Director of Research, Walter J. Urba, MD, PhD, will have the distinct honor of presenting it to a deserving discoverer and leader on the team. Endowed funding is critical to our cancer research program. The interest earned provides an ongoing source of funding that recognizes and supports the chair-holder’s work to develop more life-saving research and fill the void created by decreased federal funding. Outright gifts, pledges over time, and gifts through non-monetary assets all are welcomed in this special initiative. Thank you for your generous consideration.
“As a cancer surgeon and researcher, my goal is to ultimately put myself out of a job.” ~ R. Bryan Bell, M.D., D.D.S., FACS Physician Executive / Director of Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Clinical Programs
