Diane finds hope at Providence Diane Davis, a resident of Corvallis, was told in 2015 she had three months to live. When she was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer, Diane tried standard cancer treatments, but none of them worked. Her doctor suggested she get her affairs in order. She didn’t listen.

Diane and her husband met with an oncologist in Portland to discuss treatment options, including investigational therapies. Unfortunately, Diane had TP53 mutated gene, which made her unable to participate in many clinical trials.

“I was in a lot of pain,” Diane says. “I knew I was sliding downhill quickly.”

Providence Cancer Institute enrolled her into a clinical trial for a combination of immunotherapies called nivolumab and varlilumab. She was the first patient with ovarian cancer to enter the study. A year later, after one of her tumors had grown, she entered another immunotherapy trial. “It was more involved than the first, and they both worked,” says Diane. After the trials, doctors noticed a significant difference in Diane’s tumors – they were gone.

The drugs worked for Diane, but they don’t work for everyone. “I think she is truly a miracle,” says Rui Li, M.D., Ph.D., oncologist with Providence. “We need more research so we can help more people like Diane.”

Providence gave me hope.

They weren’t going to give up on me, and I wasn’t going to give up on me either.

Diane counts each day as a blessing. “I wouldn’t be here without the amazing doctors at Providence. Each day I thank Providence for saving my life,” Diane says.

She goes to routine check-ups every few months to make sure no new tumors have developed. So far so good, she says. She does not intend to die from ovarian cancer.
