These are just some of the fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables residents at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center find on the menu.

Cheryl Havens connected with a communitysupported agriculture vendor just down the road to have fresh produce delivered.

Cheryl will sometimes pick up food from the large farms to fill in any gaps in the menu.

Farms surround the area: from cauliflower and cabbage fields to apple groves and blueberry patches. But most of these farms are large and don’t have a way to deliver the relatively small amounts Providence Benedictine needs. Dietitian

Residents love the fresh food. A majority of them are from the local community and bought fruit and vegetables from these same farms.

New executive director | Phil McCorkle joined as the executive director of Providence Benedictine Nursing Center Foundation in July. A native of Monmouth, Ore., Phil has worked in various mid-Willamette Valley nonprofits for 30 years.

In his experience, donors “are among the kindest and most interesting humans I’ve met. I see clearly that my job is not to convince them to give but to help them discover how they want to make a difference, then help make that happen.”

The care patients in the hospice program receive goes beyond physical comfort to include emotional and spiritual needs. Often, the sense of relief or reduction in anxiety that results is of significant benefit to the patient’s physical state.

Equipment helps improve comfort | Service fees and reimbursements often don’t cover the cost of equipment essential to improving the comfort, safety and dignity of our residents. Your generosity allowed us to purchase a significant number of these items, including specialty wheelchairs and therapeutic cushions that can ease pain and improve posture. Residents and patients in the nursing center, assisted living, home health and hospice all benefited from your kindness.

“Having a variety of fresh foods that our residents associate as locally-grown adds a connection that helps motivate healthy eating,” said Cheryl. “It connects the farmers with us, too. It allows them to see what we do and why we do it. We take pride in serving delicious and fresh foods to our residents. A lot of the farmers have family members who have lived here.”

Thanks to your support, residents can order their meals using Bedside Connect on a computer tablet.

Using this system, we can offer the residents an extended variety of foods. Having the fresh produce gives them choices that are more nutritious, and many residents eat better when the fruit and veggies are offered.

Art program strikes a chord with Homero They donned gowns, gave Homero a paint brush, turned the music on and stood back. Then the magic happened.

Center for Medically Fragile Children, explained how art helped her and her staff get to know the children. “For new admissions, we take our art cart into the room,” she said. “At the end of the assessment, we’ll know every sensory need of the child and can plan a program specifically for that child.”

Homero is a resident at the Center for Medically Fragile Children. Because he and many of the other residents at the center are non-verbal, the caregiver team uses creative ways to understand each child and communicate with them.

Homero especially enjoys music, along with art and other activities, and often waves his hands to the beat.

Swindells offers support for the whole family | The Swindells Resource Center provides valuable information to the whole family. At monthly Sibshops (sibling workshops), brothers and sisters of children with special needs connect with one another and get the extra attention they need.

Grandparents, who often care for their grandkids with special needs, can attend workshops designed just for them. Because of you, the Swindells Center reaches all family members to help children with special needs thrive.

Dental clinic cares for children | For children with special needs, going to the dentist can be very stressful. Thanks to you, new distraction toys were purchased in 2017. Playing with these toys engages the child and helps divert their attention during dental care. The toys help reduce anxiety and help make the child more comfortable and often more cooperative.

Rosie the robot aids doctors | Thanks to you, taking a medically fragile child to the emergency department for minor medical issues is no longer necessary. Doctors can now examine residents virtually. Mounted on a cart that is rolled up to a resident’s beside by a nurse, “Rosie” allows the doctor to get a close look. Named after the robot in The Jetsons cartoon, Rosie is equipped with a digital stethoscope and camera. The doctor can listen to the resident’s heart and lungs, perform an ear exam, and view the skin up close for anything unusual.

Kerry organized an art show to display paintings created by the residents, thanks to your support of the Center for Medically Fragile Children and the recreational therapy program.

The artwork was displayed in the CMFC learning center in October. Each child had one piece of art in the show, along with three photos of the child creating the piece.

When it came time for Homero to create his painting, the staff used music for his inspiration.

Homero held a special paintbrush, Kerry turned on the music and he swung the brush around to the beat. “I just held the canvas to catch the paint,” said Kerry. “It’s an amazing piece on stretched canvas, and the work is all his.”

Thank you for supporting this program and giving children the opportunity to express their creativity.

Charleen credits the support of her walking group with helping her through breast cancer treatment.

“I am alive and I am lucky.”

Charleen Tefry has fought cancer twice. First, she had Hodgkin’s lymphoma then breast cancer.

In between, her husband was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. He died not long before Charleen was diagnosed breast cancer.

She first spoke to Kate Newgard, nurse navigator at Providence Leila J. Eisenstein Breast Center. “Kate is the angel of the breast cancer patients,” said Charleen.

Charleen moved to Medford because it was closer to her family in California, it had an airport and it had Providence. She didn’t know many people, so she took advantage of programs offered through the breast center, beginning with the walking group. Participating in the group was an important part of her healing.

She was living in Roseburg at the time she received the news. She wanted to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstructive surgery, but her oncologist did not offer that. Charleen called Providence Medford Medical Center to find if it performed reconstructive surgery.

Yvette graduated in June | Thank you for easing the way for Yvette Banuelos to become a nurse. Yvette received the Beverly Lowman Nursing Scholarship to use for her undergraduate tuition. “I was able to spend time with my family and still focus on my education because of this scholarship opportunity. Thank you to everyone who made this happen and for Providence being there to support me when I needed it the most.”

Play Smart comes to Southern Oregon | We now offer free heart screenings for youth ages 12 through 18 because of you. Play Smart screens kids for any potential heart issues or conditions. Athletes from South Medford High School received the first screenings in December, and we will begin collaborating with community partners to make screenings available to as many youth as possible. Thank you for helping keep kids safe, active and healthy.

Festival of Trees helps expand Swindells | Thanks to you, Dillon and his family found the information and support they needed at the Swindells Resource Center. Now, Dillon and his mom Ivonne help coordinate the Familias Especiales support group, attend community trainings, and help with outreach for community events. Generous donors at the 2017 Festival of Trees Gala gave more than $580,000 for programs supported by Providence Community Health Foundation. More than $80,000 of that went to the Swindells Resource Center.

Parents and caregivers of children who have special needs, developmental delays or disabilities receive services at no cost.

“You don’t realize how long the process takes and how it affects you,” she said. “To have the support of others is everything.”

Charleen is cancer free but knows that her Hodgkin’s lymphoma can come back. She said there is just something about Providence, something special. She is so thankful for her care at Providence and for all the support services offered because of your generosity.

Music therapist Emily Vawter brightens up a patient’s day with song.

Music in the hospital Emily Vawter has been a board-certified music therapist for more than 20 years and has spent the last six years with Providence Hospice of the Gorge. She uses music to encourage memory sharing, distract from pain, decrease isolation, and decrease anxiety. Despite physical limitations, patients are able to participate, often with their families. It is a positive experience that they can look forward to.

Comfort kits for cancer patients | Newly diagnosed cancer patients often are overwhelmed. Thanks to you, we can make their treatment a little easier by giving them a comfort kit. Packed in a zippered Providence bag, the kits include a blanket, thermometer, toothbrush, nail kit, hand sanitizer, socks, tissues, a neck pillow, water bottle and a cancer cookbook. Patients use the bag to carry back and forth anything they need for treatments.

Hospice/child grief | Because of you, children and teens who have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives can attend Hospice Child Grief groups. The groups meet monthly. Group leaders create a supportive space where participants may share their feelings and experiences as they give and receive mutual support. Classes are offered free of charge.

before you die? That’s the question behind the “Before I die wall.” Your support of hospice allowed us to bring the wall to the gorge.

The wall is a large chalkboard with multiple rows, each starting with “Before I die, I want to ...” The wall encourages reflection and conversations about what matters most to us.

He told me that was the kind of song he’d sing to his wife. He told me how he was in a Mexican band and played guitar and sang. I offered him my guitar. He played a song and taught me part of a Mexican song.” During the visit, his respiratory therapist came in to work with him. Emily offered to leave, but the therapist said he’d come back later because singing was excellent therapy.

Healers know that music and medicine, when used together, are powerful tools to help soothe and calm patients, reduce pain and elevate mood. “Music can engage the entire family.

It’s something they can still do together,” said Emily. Thank you for bringing music to our patients and their families.

Angela and Alicia are healthier and happier after learning how to prepare healthy and inexpensive meals.

Alicia learned a healthier way to cook Before her diagnosis of cancer at age 29, Alicia worked out four times a week and thought she had a healthy diet.

Alicia’s doctor referred her to the Community Teaching Kitchen program where she enrolled in the Cooking Matters class. “I was not a chef by any means – how could I pull off cooking on my own in a way that was healthy and affordable?”

After cancer, life was different. “The medications caused high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” said Alicia. “They made me gain weight and made me pre-diabetic. They also put me into medical menopause. I needed to get control of my health – for my family, for my future, for me.”

Over the course of six weeks, Alicia learned how to prepare healthy meals that weren’t expensive. Most of the recipes feed a family of four for less than $10.

Family medicine residency program | The need for primary care doctors in the U.S. has never been greater. Thanks to your support of the family medicine residency program, Providence Milwaukie Hospital is training doctors to be patient centered, socially responsible and community focused in the care they provide. Since 2001, we have trained 100 family medicine providers. More than 80 percent now practice in the Portland area. You make it possible for us to provide exceptional care, especially to those most in need.

Phaco machine | Thanks to your generosity, the surgeons performing cataract surgery have a new phaco machine. The machine removes the old lens from the eye during cataract surgery. “We’re so thankful for this generous contribution,” said Sasha Meyer, RN manager, clinical operations, surgery services at Providence Milwaukie Hospital. “Our old machine was nearing its end of life, and we needed a new one – now.”

Mother Baby Clinic | For new moms and babies, the first week at home is a vulnerable time. Babies lose weight. Moms might have pain and trouble breastfeeding, leaving many so frustrated that they give up. The Mother Baby Clinic serves as a safety net for moms and babies. A nurse visits new moms two days after they go home from the hospital to provide breastfeeding support and check the baby’s weight. She also screens them to make sure they have enough food. Thank you for giving Milwaukie-area families the help they need for breastfeeding success.

“The kitchen changed my approach to food for good,” she said. “I am happy to say that I’ve lost 18 pounds, and my wife has lost 40!

Rachael was surrounded by her biggest fans as she fulfilled her dream of receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Scholarship helps Rachael achieve her dream “I like serving the community where I live,” said Rachael Krebs. “And as a nurse, I get to care for people from my hometown.” Rachael started working as a certified nursing assistant in 2005.

She found the work enjoyable, and it was a great career.

Team Pink! | What happens when you bring together a group of people with a passion for helping patients with breast cancer? You get Team Pink! And you get an event that brings the community together to support cancer services at Providence Newberg Medical Center. This group of volunteers planned the Evening of Hope concert featuring Aaron Meyer. More than 150 people enjoyed the music and contributed nearly $60,000 for 3D mammography.

Murdock and Macdonald grants for 3D mammography | M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund helped purchase a new 3-D mammography machine. Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, and this advanced technology will help save lives. The machine provides more detailed images of the breast tissue. This new technology has shown a 41 percent increase in detecting invasive breast cancers, compared to traditional two-dimensional mammograms.

Our local store on the corner of 99W and Villa Road hosted this special day on Oct. 20. Rachael graduated in April 2018.

“I am so excited to be fulfilling my dream of being a nurse. It’s hard to persevere and keep working toward your goal at times, but lessening some of the financial stress makes a huge difference,” she said. She continues to work for Providence.

That’s when she was encouraged to apply for a scholarship from the Mike Olberding Education Fund. When she first started school, her husband didn’t have steady employment, so Rachael was working full time and going to school full time.

She said, “I couldn’t have done it without the scholarship money.”

Franz Cancer Center named to honor Oregon philanthropist A Portland native, Robert W. “Bob” Franz joined the fight against cancer in 1986 when he became a board member of the Providence Portland Medical Foundation. His intense curiosity, generosity and leadership played a major role in launching and furthering cancer research efforts at Providence.

Bright new space for regional research team | The regional research team was outgrowing its space and finding it difficult to effectively collaborate with the cancer clinical trials team. Thanks to your support, regional research moved into newly remodeled space in October. Former Providence Portland Medical Foundation Board Chair Arleen Barnett ensured the project moved forward. In recognition of her unwavering support of the expansion, the new Arleen Barnett Conference Room was named in her honor.

Integrative Medicine eases side effects | Chemotherapy is hard on the body.

Because of your generous gifts, the integrative medicine program can offer patient services to help ease side effects. Patients have access to massage, acupuncture, and other natural treatments that support healing and improve their quality of life.

Nursing education benefits nurses and patients | The medical field changes constantly. It can be challenging for nurses to keep up with all the newest treatments and processes. Thanks to a generous gift from Elsie Franz Finley, oncology nurses are able to take classes and learn about the newest care. “More education will help us grow and make us better nurses,” said Missy Newell, RN. “We will be able to meet more of our patients’ needs.”

been shown to be highly effective in several types of advanced cancers, including lung, bladder, lymphoma and kidney cancers, as well as melanoma.

Bob’s final gift will be used to attract more top researchers from around the world, build new laboratory and research space, and speed progress toward Providence’s overarching goal to finish cancer in our lifetimes.

Bob died in August 2016. Over the course of his life, Bob gave more than $40 million to Providence.

As a fitting and lasting tribute to Bob Franz and his legacy of contributions, the 11-story tower that houses cancer research and services on the Providence Portland Medical Center campus was named in his honor in October.

“Bob’s gift allows us to think about the future in ways we never have before,” said Dr. Urba.

Charlie Harper gives back to Providence by helping other patients who have had open heart surgery.

Charlie volunteers to help other heart patients Because of you, we can offer the Pathfinders Peer Support Program through Basecamp | Cardiac Prevention + Wellness. The program matches patients who have recently experienced a cardiac event with volunteers who have experienced similar events.

Charlie decided to participate in cardiac rehabilitation classes. “The classes were very informative and helpful. I’m grateful to be alive.”

Now Charlie shares his experience with other patients every Monday. “It’s good for me personally,” he said. “And I like to think I’m helping people see that, while the road may look dark now, there are better days ahead.”

Pathfinder Charlie Harper had triple bypass heart surgery in 2014. “Having a heart attack can be discouraging. The staff at St. Vincent helped me in the times when I couldn’t help myself very well,” he said. At his doctor’s recommendation,

Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation 2017 Highlights Ethics center | Providence Center for Health Care Ethics is a resource for

patients, families, doctors and health care workers. The center helps to clarify difficult ethical issues. Donors provide 100 percent of the funds necessary to operate the ethics center. Gifts from donors allow the center to train doctors, nurses and other teams in ethical decision-making through its ethics core curriculum programs.

Music brings relief | Music-thanatology brings physical, emotional and spiritual comfort to patients and their families during a time of serious illness or at the end of life. Highly trained music-thanatalogists respond to a patient’s changing condition with unique prescriptive music using harp and voice.

Because the music is individualized, it often lessens pain, reduces anxiety, relieves respiratory distress and provides deep relaxation. Thanks to generous donors, there is no fee for this service.

Basecamp features creative displays, profiles of inspiring patients, and interactive activities allowing patients to plot their course to better health. The Apple a Day Café serves nutritious food and drink, as well as offers heart-healthy recipes to try at home. Flexible classrooms support ongoing learning activities and provide beautiful and dynamic space for community events.

Basecamp opened in March 2017. It takes its name from the place where mountain climbers and adventurers come together to prepare for a journey of discovery and accomplishment.

Healthy Smiles leads to healthier kids “I’ve had kids who have completely black teeth because they haven’t been taking care of them, and their parents didn’t know they could see a dentist for free,” said Justin. “I do a lot of patient navigation for kids who have never seen a dentist.”

The Healthy Smiles program began in Clatsop County in 2016 through a grant from the Oregon Community Foundation and from your generosity.

The 2017-2018 school year is the second full year of operation.

Justin Abbott is the patient navigator for Healthy Smiles. A former schoolteacher, he connects with families either by referral from a school nurse or through the dental sealant program he manages.

When he finds a student with dental care needs, he works with the parents to find a dentist or clinic.

Along with the sealant program, Justin also coordinates dental learning labs for kindergarten through 8th grade students. The labs have six or seven stations depending on the grade level. Small groups rotate through the stations for detailed 20

Angel on a Leash | Because of you, patients, families and hospital employees all benefit from the Angel on a Leash Therapy Dog Program. Your support provided scholarships for pets and their owners to become certified pet therapy providers. There are now seven active teams, and it’s the first therapy dog program ever at Providence Seaside Hospital. Interacting with a therapy dog helps with blood pressure regulation, pain relief, stress relief and it brings joy.

3D mammography | Thanks to you, Providence Seaside Hospital was the first on the north coast to have a 3D Tomosynthesis breast mammography machine. The quality of the image in Tomo is very detailed, which can help improve cancer detection rates and decrease callback rates. For patients like Sarah, it means she doesn’t have to go to a different provider for a 3D mammogram. “I’m so grateful to donors for bringing this amazing machine to the north coast,” she said.

Floyd is an award-winning therapy dog whose calm demeanor gives comfort to children and adults.

Becky and Floyd bring comfort to patients Hope Grove and her family witnessed firsthand the tremendous benefits of pet therapy when a family member was in hospice care. Because of their experience, the family pooled their resources to create a grant to fund certification of new pet therapy animals.

When they moved back to Oregon, Becky visited the closest hospital, Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center to see if they could volunteer.

“Floyd loves and greets everyone, but he’s especially drawn to children. Whether they are sick, healthy, cognitively challenged, shy, or exuberant, it doesn’t matter, he loves them all. Floyd particularly seeks out children who need him,” said Becky.

Floyd and his handler Becky were the first team to receive funding for certification. “Floyd and I have been working as a pet therapy team since 2001,” said Becky.

Healing Garden is an oasis in a busy hospital | Thanks to a grant from volunteers of Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center, we now have a more welcoming rooftop patio.

The patio provides a quiet place for patients, families and employees. Comfortable seating and large lush plants create a peaceful area.

Improvements included the application of a special non-slip sealant and the addition of electricity.

Hospice | MaryJo stepped in as caregiver for her friend Sr. Eileen Brown, a Sister of the Holy Names, when Sr. Eileen’s health began to diminish from her cancer. Thanks to you, Providence Hospice Services joined the team in caring for Sr. Eileen. MaryJo recalled the incredible compassion and dignity they received from hospice, “I am very grateful for the support of Providence Hospice … and for their compassion to me as I mourned her loss.”

Cardiac rehab expands | After Bill’s heart attack, his doctor recommended cardiac rehabilitation. Like many patients, Bill was reluctant to begin. He worried he would hurt himself. But with the encouragement of his wife and family, he signed up. “Rehab changed my life and my lifestyle,” he said. “I feel healthy now.” Thanks to your support, he could sign up for classes close to home at Providence Willamette Falls.

Becky learned they could volunteer in the Children and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit (CAPU), which sounded like the perfect place for Floyd. But then she found out they needed to register with Pet Partners. Because Floyd and CAPU seemed like such a good fit, she decided to go through the Pet Partners training and testing. Within a couple of months, they were registered with Pet Partners and could begin volunteering.

Eric Tran, Ph.D., and his team are studying immune resistance in patients and how to overcome it.

Researcher settles into his new role It was a busy year for Eric Tran, Ph.D.

Dr. Tran has added a postdoctoral fellow and three research associates to his team. They are learning the specialized techniques of adoptive cell immunotherapy that Dr. Tran mastered while at the National Cancer Institute.

Because of your support, Dr. Tran joined Providence early in 2017 as assistant member, Antitumor T-Cell Response Laboratory, Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, a division of Providence Cancer Institute. His research focuses on a type of immunotherapy called adoptive T-cell therapy.

It involves isolating T cells from a patient, growing those T cells in the lab to large numbers, and then re-infusing the T cells into the patient to find and destroy cancer cells.

Soon after his arrival, Dr. Tran was named one of the nation’s 15 most promising young researchers by the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research, earning him a two-year research grant.

2017 Highlights Walt Bowen Challenge | We know immunotherapy works. But we also know it doesn’t work for everyone. In 2017, Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation Trustee Walt Bowen took the lead in finding a way to unlock all the data we have that could bring personalized immunotherapy to patients. The Bowen Challenge will match funds raised to create a centralized hub for cancer immunotherapy bioinformatics to translate the data into improved treatments in the clinic.

Robert W. Franz Endowed Chair | Brendan Curti, M.D., joined the Providence Cancer Institute in 2002. Since that time, he has written, led or co-led more than 35 clinical trials. To recognize Dr. Curti for the pivotal role he plays in translating laboratory results into treatments for patients, he is the first recipient of the Robert W. Franz Endowed Chair for Clinical Research. The endowment provides ongoing funding for Dr. Curti’s work to develop life-saving clinical research.

Creating Hope | Your generosity creates more moments. Philanthropy funds 70 percent of the research occurring at Providence Cancer Institute for cancer patients in our care. More than 500 supporters attended the Providence Creating Hope Dinner on May 24, giving more than $778,000.

These funds support research that creates new treatments. New treatments create hope – hope for more time and more moments with those we love.

Despite progress, many cancer patients still do not respond to current immunotherapy. Dr. Tran’s team is studying this immune resistance and developing strategies to overcome it.

“We hope to offer patients this therapy as early as 2019,” said Dr. Tran.

Thanks to your support of the cancer research conducted at Providence Cancer Institute, we were able to attract Dr. Tran to our team.

Dr. Tran and his team are creating clinical trials for patients whose cancers are predicted to recur within two to three years. These include pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancers, which have the poorest prognoses.

“I would not be here without philanthropic support,” says Dr. Tran. “It warms my heart to know there are many kind and generous people helping us in our efforts to finish cancer.”

Wrangler brings a calmness to patients as they experience a difficult situation.

Wrangler helps calm kids in stressful situations Mary* was withdrawn and wouldn’t talk to anyone. Admitted to the children’s emergency department at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center for a behavioral health issue, she was scared and confused.

Wrangler’s handler, child life specialist Teddie Garland, has received intense training on directing him to support our young patients.

“I brought Wrangler to the patient’s room and was given permission to enter with a nod,” said Teddie. “I sat down on the floor a few feet away, and Wrangler lay down next to her. She immediately began to pet him.”

Until Wrangler walked in.

Wrangler came to Providence St. Vincent from Assistance Dogs of Hawaii. The non-profit trains and places service, facility and courthouse dogs.

2017 Highlights Play Smart screens more youth | Play Smart is 100 percent supported by you. This program screens youth for potentially fatal heart conditions, and it has provided more than 25,000 free screenings since 2012 with 8,800 youth screened in 2017. Greenbrier Companies gave $400,000 to Play Smart in 2017. It is the largest gift in Greenbrier’s history. According to Lorie Tekorius, executive vice president and CFO of Greenbrier, “If our efforts can help save even one child from a potentially deadly heart condition, it will have been more than worth it.”

Cardiac rehab expands | The March opening of the Steve and Donna Shepard Heart Fitness Center in Basecamp nearly doubled the number of cardiac rehab patients served at Providence St. Vincent. More than 1,000 people took advantage of the program in 2017. The light, airy space is welcoming and outfitted with modern equipment.

Basecamp offers an array of classes | In Basecamp’s first year, more than 5,500 people participated in free and low-cost wellness classes and events. Yoga, tai chi, heart-healthy cooking and nutrition, CPR, and “Tea and Talks” focusing on women’s heart health were a few of the opportunities people enjoyed. Your support allows us to offer the classes and lectures for free or low cost.

Tim and Mary see the potential in using cardiovascular outcomes research to create personalized cardiac care out of these vast databases.

“This is a great place to practice medicine and a system well positioned to improve health care,” he said. “What’s the highest quality care that corresponds to what the patient wants? That’s our North Star.”

2017 Highlights Data provides insight into better care | Providence Orthopedic Institute performs more than 12,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures each year. Thanks to your support, we can draw on data from throughout the larger Providence system to produce published research in prestigious medical journals and present at national and international orthopedic conferences. All of this helps in collaborating to discover effective new treatments for our patients. With a projected 174 percent increase in the number of hip and knee replacements during the next 15 years, this research is vitally important. Your support made it possible.

Research shows excellent care at lower cost | This past year, Providence Orthopedic Institute doctors and researchers compared the results and costs of same-day elective total hip arthroplasties done in a joint venture ambulatory surgery center to in-hospital care. They found that for select patients, outpatient total hip arthroplasties can provide the same excellent care at a lower cost. Presented at the Hip Society Annual Meeting & Western Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting, the paper outlined streamlined criteria for outpatient hip replacement patient selection and provided recommendations for outpatient pathways in the future.

Multi-centered collaborative research is underway | In 2017, Providence Orthopedic Institute began a multi-centered study with eight other hospitals and health care organizations. The study will last for three years and seeks to identify factors that may affect a patient’s perception of their surgeon’s skill, their trust in their doctor, and likelihood to refer. Collaborators include the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York, NY), Harvard Brigham and Women’s (Boston, Mass.), University of Arkansas (Little Rock), University of Nebraska (Omaha), Northshore University (Chicago, Ill.), Florida Orthopaedic Institute (Tampa), Cedars Sinai (Los Angeles, Calif.), and IASIS Healthcare (Salt Lake City, Utah).

Providence Brain and Spine Institute

Welcome Dr. Seth Oliveria Seth Oliveria, M.D., Ph.D., joined Providence Brain and Spine institute in August, thanks to your support and the funds raised at the 2014 Festival of Trees. Dr. Oliveria is Providence Brain and Spine Institute’s first functional neurosurgeon, which means he is trained to provide neuromodulation surgery to our patients. Dr. Oliveria practices with The Oregon Clinic as a neurosurgeon.

Funds from the Festival of Trees were used to establish our Neuromodulation Center. The center connects our neurosurgeons, neurologists, RN navigators and multi-disciplinary teams to bring comprehensive care for neurological patients.

Your generous gifts support the purchase of specific and dedicated operating room equipment, as well as key research and clinical care resources so Providence Brain and Spine can participate in deep brain stimulation clinical trials.

Neuromodulation is stimulation of various nerves in the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves to change their activity in order to achieve a therapeutic result. Deep brain stimulation is one type of neuromodulation and involves delivering an electrical current to deep structures of the brain.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Colorado, Dr. Oliveria completed his internship and residency at the University of Florida. He also received fellowship training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Oliveria is board eligible in general cranial and spinal neurosurgery, deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery.

Deep brain stimulation has been very effective in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, tremor and dystonia (a neurological movement disorder).

Planned Giving Philanthropy through your will, trust, estate or property

Keeping an old promise Severe abdominal pain landed David Legg at Providence Milwaukie Hospital for a week. When he was discharged, the out-of-work businessman went straight to the billing office. “I’m sorry, but I’m unemployed. I have no money,” David told the clerk.

Providence Milwaukie graciously wrote off the entire bill. “The moment they wrote it off I said to myself, ‘I have to pay this back.’” That was 20 years ago.

More recently, David needed heart surgery. “I have a genetic heart condition,” he says. “My grandfather died of heart disease in his early 70s.

The same thing could have happened to me.”

13,000-foot level of Mt. Kilimanjaro. David and Cindy volunteer with conservation groups to clear trails and restore natural habitats. David also volunteers at Providence Heart Institute’s Basecamp, encouraging patients after surgery.

“Providence gave me a new lease on life,” David says. “The surgeon said my new heart valve should last until I’m 100, so that’s my goal … keep going to at least 100!”

This past year David kept his 20-year-old promise to repay Providence’s kindness. He earmarked $25,000 in his will for Providence. “It was easy.

I told my lawyer what I wanted to do, he wrote it into my will, and we notified the Providence Office of Gift Planning.”

David had surgery at Providence Heart Institute and started cardiac rehabilitation at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center as soon as his doctors would permit.

David’s bequest will help future patients access cardiac rehab. As David knows, keeping promises and chasing goals can be just what the doctor ordered for a happy, healthy heart.

One year after surgery, David scaled Mount St. Helens. Two years after surgery, he celebrated with his friend, Cindy, by climbing to the 34
