Family creates scholarship fund in memory of parents A lifelong resident of Sublimity, Ore., Marjorie Humphreys never planned to move from her home. But when a fall caused a broken bone, she had to change her plans.

2016 Highlights Mental health nurses | For families of homebound patients with mental illness, having access to specialized mental health nurses can be a godsend. Providence is the only provider in the Benedictine service area to offer this care. Along with providing care for these vulnerable patients, Providence mental health nurses help family members understand their loved one’s illness and learn how to keep them safe at home.

Hospice services | Providence Benedictine added hospice services for its patients in 2016. Hospice care allows Providence Benedictine to support and guide patients through the end of their life.

They no longer have to leave Providence when they’re ready for hospice, which is important to many of our patients and their families.

Tree of Remembrance | More than 70 people attended the 2016 Tree of Remembrance event. The event raised more than $38,360 to help care for residents whose expenses are not entirely covered by insurance, government reimbursements or their own resources. The tree served as a place for reflection, the commemoration of loved ones, and as a reminder for all guests to give thanks.

As supervisor of Swindells Resource Center, Michelle O’Donnell sees every day what a difference it makes for families of children with special needs.

Swindells connects families that form strong bonds “Why are you so happy?” asked the father of a child with Down syndrome to the speaker – also the parent of a child with Down syndrome – at a Swindells Resource Center event in eastern Oregon. The speaker responded with examples of her son’s activities in their community. She said her goal was not to change her son, but to change the community and its perception of her son.

After the presentation, Swindells Resource Center supervisor Michelle O’Donnell learned that this was the first time these four families had met. They stayed after the event, shared stories and got to know one another.

Now they’ve begun a parent support group and are meeting once a month. This represents the mission of Swindells – empowering families and connecting them with others who share the same journey.

The father, a member of one of four Latino families that attended the event, had never before attended a Swindells workshop.

2016 Highlights Pediatric sub-acute program | By the end of 2016, construction was well underway of the only pediatric sub-acute program in the Pacific Northwest.

Specialty Dental Clinic | The Specialty Dental Clinic at Providence Child Center cared for 3,150 children in 2016 and now is seeing a wider range of children with developmental challenges. Traditional dentist offices often are not equipped or cannot afford to provide care for this vulnerable population. Thanks to you, this clinic now can serve more families with dental needs who are under-insured or have exhausted other reimbursement resources.

Ceiling lift system | Moving children at the Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children between their beds, wheelchairs, and therapy equipment requires a nurse or assistant to lift and move them.

That’s more than 2,900 lifts per child in a year. Because of your support, the center now has a ceiling lift system that enables the caregiver to easily transfer a child in a safe, comfortable and dignified manner.

Your generous support has allowed the Swindells Resource Center to serve more families every year since opening in 1994.

Direct contributions, in-kind support and robust partnerships with organizations around Oregon help provide services at little to no cost to families. For families with a child who needs extra support, it’s comforting and empowering to know that there’s a place to turn for the information and support they need.

Yvette pursues her dream of becoming a nurse Yvette was 19 and working on her prerequisites for nursing school when she applied for a job at Providence Medford Medical Center. “I didn’t have much work experience,” she explained, “but Providence saw something in me and took a chance.” She is currently a phone operator in Access Services.

The Beverly Lowman Nursing Scholarship Fund was created by her family in 1985 in memory of Bev, a long-time nurse at Providence Medford. The fund provides yearly scholarships to Providence Medford Medical Center or Providence Medical Group employees studying for an undergraduate, graduate or professional certification in nursing or rehabilitation.

Now, along with continuing to work at Providence, Yvette is a full-time nursing student at Southern Oregon University and Oregon Health & Science University. A married mother 8

Providence Community Health Foundation Medford

2016 Highlights Festival of Trees | 2016 marked the 25th annual Providence Festival of Trees in Medford. More than 15,000 community members joined in celebration. Children (and some adults) whispered their wishes in Santa’s ear. Teddy bears received TLC at the Teddy Bear Hospital. Good food and local performers provided entertainment to festival goers.

Father Jim Clifford | When Father Jim Clifford retired in 2016 as Providence Medford’s director of Mission and spiritual care, he asked that people struggling with behavioral health issues receive help. Thanks to your generous support, the Fr. Jim Clifford Behavioral Health Fund was created to support projects or services that benefit people struggling with issues related to mental illness, substance abuse or domestic violence.

Glen’s Closet | Patients recovering from stroke often need help with essential life skills, such as getting dressed, before they can go home. Shirts with buttons and pants with zippers are not usual attire for patients while in the hospital. Thanks to a special donor, Glen’s Closet was created and stocked with a supply of clothing so patients can learn to dress independently again.

Winning the scholarship has helped ease the financial burden of school and allows Yvette more quality time with her family.

“When I got the award letter, I was in shock, then in tears! I couldn’t believe how generous it was and how much the Lord was blessing me with,” she said.

“I always wanted to become a nurse, but it wasn’t until I was actually working with a patient that I realized how much I truly love nursing,” she said. “I also knew I wanted to 9

Art Stevens shares a special moment with his wife Sue as they listen to music together.

Music keeps couple connected When you meet Art Stevens, you notice a few things immediately – the glimmer in his eyes and his infectious laugh. Art is in his 90s and recently celebrated his 71st wedding anniversary.

His wife Sue, diagnosed with memory loss 20 years ago, lives in the Memory Care Unit at Providence Brookside in the Hood River area.

Today Art often meets with Jamie Hanshaw, manager of Providence Brookside, to talk about songs to plug into Sue’s iPod. Sue is part of a groundbreaking program used across the United States called Music in Memory.

Brookside was the seventh residential facility in Oregon certified for the program. Because of your support, caregivers at Brookside received training to help families use music to reach loved ones suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Dancing was our thing, and Sue had a keen appreciation for music,” said Art. He says it was a love of dancing and music that brightened their lives together throughout their marriage.

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Foundation

2016 Highlights Comfort for cancer patients | Thanks to generous support of the Don Benton Cancer Support Fund, patients receiving chemotherapy at Providence Hood River now receive comfort kits during their treatment. In addition, chair massages are more widely available for cancer patients. Massage therapy can reduce pain, nausea, fatigue, anxiety and depression for patients with cancer.

I Hate Cancer Concert | Local Hood River musicians performed in a sold-out variety show called the “I Hate Cancer Concert,” benefiting the cancer program at Providence Hood River. This was the first year (2016) Providence Hood River received the proceeds. It was through urging from Providence Hood River board member and talented pianist Erick Haynie that concert organizer Molly Schwartz decided to “go local” and donate to Providence. The concert raised $4,000.

Community health workers | Through a partnership with Providence Hood River Foundation and the Susan G. Komen organization, women in the Columbia Gorge now have access to better health care. Three Providence community health team members focus on breast health and education about mammograms and cancer prevention. They mostly work with the Latino population in Hood River, many of whom work in the orchards and have limited access to health care.

Many Providence Brookside residents, family members and caregivers listen to music along with their loved ones, all benefiting from the memory of a happier time.

Sue doesn’t talk any more, but when the music starts, she taps her feet and moves her hands to the beat as if it were taking her back to the past, remembering ballroom dances and other fun times. She has a wide range of music she dearly loves.

“Music is the one gift that I would give to other families dealing with memory disease,” said Art. “Especially in my case, where Sue cannot get out of bed, music has

Community Teaching Kitchen fights food insecurity Have you ever run out of, or been afraid you would run out of, food in the past year? For many of our patients, the answer is yes.

Providence Milwaukie Hospital to get an emergency food box. They also can take free classes at the Community Teaching Kitchen to learn how to prepare healthy, affordable and delicious meals.

Not having enough to eat is more serious than just going hungry. It can lead to other, more serious, health issues. The Community Teaching Kitchen and Family Market at Providence Milwaukie Hospital opened in 2016 to help address food insecurity in the local community.

Heidi Davis is the patient navigator at the Community Teaching Kitchen. She meets with patients and families who have been screened for food insecurity, evaluates their needs and helps find solutions. She can connect them to food-related resources, recommend they take

2016 Highlights Point-of-care ultrasound | When a patient experiences medical shock, it’s often hard to know the cause. Now, because of you and your support, doctors in the intensive care unit at Providence Milwaukie Hospital can quickly assess the situation using a portable ultrasound. This important point-of-care ultrasound is now improving the accuracy of diagnoses in the ICU and helping medical teams provide better care.

Children go home with books | Thanks to you, children are going home with a book after visiting the doctor. The two family medicine residency clinics at Providence Milwaukie, which serve mostly low-income families, have joined with local nonprofit Reach Out and Read to encourage families to read together. Reading at home helps with critical brain stimulation in children under age 5, which can improve long-term health outcomes.

Greenman Gardens | Linda Stabio was beloved by her co-workers at the family medicine residency clinics in Milwaukie and southeast Portland.

Linda was with Providence for more than 25 years and died in 2016. Working with the Providence Milwaukie Foundation, co-workers created a memorial to Linda in the Greenman Gardens at Providence Milwaukie Hospital. A bench with cat and flower cutouts was placed in the garden with a Korean lilac planted next to it to honor her memory.

“I love working alongside a patient on their journey to a healthier lifestyle,” said Heidi.

“It’s rewarding to help them overcome barriers and see their confidence grow. Many who have completed the Cooking Matters class are now volunteering to help others learn how to cook!”

“The impact of the program is deep and widespread,” said Heidi. “We wouldn’t be able to do this without the generosity of our donors.”

Mom is thankful for Family Friends group Stephanie was ready for kids. She had worked as a nanny, she had her teaching credentials, and she was ready for whatever motherhood brought her.

unknown origin. Her 2-year-old son is showing many of the same signs and is delayed in development.

Stephanie felt isolated and alone. No one could truly understand what she and her husband were going through. It wasn’t until her mom’s friend did some research that she discovered the Family Friends support group through Providence Newberg Medical Center.

As it turns out, there were many issues for which she could not be prepared.

Stephanie’s two children have rare disorders that don’t have a name or a diagnosis. Her daughter, now 5, has language problems and seizures of

2016 Highlights Cancer care kits | Thanks to your support, cancer patients will receive cancer care kits filled with items that help them through chemotherapy.

The kits are filled with items such as a journal, soft blanket, nail care items, a recipe book for cancer patients, and much more. Volunteers assembled enough kits to give one to every patient newly diagnosed with cancer at Providence Newberg for the next two years.

Biliblanket for newborns | The Birth Center at Providence Newberg purchased a new “biliblanket.” The biliblanket, along with bililights, helps newborns get rid of the extra bilirubin that causes jaundice. While newborn jaundice is common, if left untreated it can have serious consequences. “Thank you to our donors for their generous hearts,” said Pamela Weaver, manager of The Birth Center.

“You make a difference for our tiniest patients.”

Honoring the Pink Ladies | “The Pink Ladies” began supporting the community hospital in Newberg when they opened the auxiliary gift shop more than 50 years ago. Providence Newberg honored these women – and everything they do for our community – at the Heart of Gold dinner in August. The event raised $121,000.

“While no one has the same issues,” explains Stephanie, “they are welcoming and loving and have helped us tremendously with the medical bureaucracy. Within the first six months, they understood my story. I know these are people I can turn to. The time I get to spend with the group gives me a moment to have a normal day.”

Regional research team looks forward to new space Your support of the Providence Portland Medical Foundation is bringing together all research administrative services.

The research programs have been consistently expanding their programs with both sponsored research and our own investigator-initiated clinical trials. This progress, as well as some broader Providence initiatives around contracting and clinical trial management system, has meant the regional research department has outgrown its current space.

“Six years ago we realized it would be most efficient to bring together research administrative services for all Oregon clinical research programs under one central department,” said Mary Healy, director of the regional research department.

“We moved into the space previously occupied by cancer research, before the cancer center tower was built, which worked well until recently.”

“With all the research administrative services under one roof, we can provide better oversight and control over critical services like contracts, 16

2016 Highlights Cancer Moonshot | Vice President Joe Biden kicked off the Cancer Moonshot in June. The moonshot’s goal: To accelerate advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Providence Cancer Center/Earle A. Chiles Research Institute was the only site in Oregon invited to participate in the vice president’s roundtable discussion. Your support allows us to participate in clinical trials and bring better treatment options to our patients.

Help is here for families | Because of you, families have a resource when they’re dealing with a family member who has dementia. The book, “Help is Here: When Someone You Love Has Dementia,” written by Marian Hodges, M.D., and Anne Hill, J.D., would not have been possible without your support. Other versions emerged from the original, with special editions for nursing staff and one for leadership. A Spanish version will be published in 2017.

Celebrating 75 years | Providence Portland Medical Center celebrated 75 years of caring for the community on Sept. 8, 2016. The first patient the Sisters of Providence cared for was a 2½-year-old girl needing a tonsillectomy.

Today 3,100 employees and 1,200 medical staff members serve thousands of patients each year. With your help, Providence Portland will continue to care for the most vulnerable in our community for 75 more years.

The new space will improve effectiveness, efficiency and communications among the different departments.

The remodel of the space will take place in 2017. More than 100 people will be located on the 5th floor with room for expansion.

“It was obvious that we needed to help,” explained Arleen Barnett, chair of the Providence Portland Medical Foundation. “The regional research group provides essential services to the clinical research departments throughout Providence Oregon. They deserved to have work space that met their needs.”

Thanks for Providence, Jeff can get back to what he really loves – fishing.

Jeff’s journey to better heart health Jeff Van Hoy never thought it would happen to him. “It was a late evening in August. I thought I just had indigestion. Heart disease runs in my family, but I never thought at 58 years old it would affect me. I thought I was in good health.”

Cardiac rehab was a life changer, especially for Jeff’s diet. “I was surprised. I thought my diet was okay. But, in retrospect, I’m surprised at how bad it was.”

Heart disease can strike anyone. In Oregon, the facts are alarming: 1 in 5 Oregonians dies from heart disease, and 63 percent of adults have at least one of three top heart disease risk factors. The rates of high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis among youth and young adults are rising rapidly.

Jeff’s heart attack came as a wake-up call. He knew he needed to make big changes. Like many people after a heart attack, he was depressed. “I didn’t have the confidence I felt I needed.” At his doctor’s recommendation, he decided to participate in cardiac rehabilitation.

Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation

2016 Highlights Child life specialists | For a child, the hospital can be a scary place.

The team of child life specialists at Providence St. Vincent is there to support children and their families through situations that can be very stressful. Thanks to you and your support, child life specialists are available to help prepare children for surgery or other procedures. They also help children understand when a parent, sibling or other family member is in the hospital.

Food insecurity in older patients | Work began in late 2016 to establish a pilot program at Providence St. Vincent to identify adults over age 50 who might be at risk for food insecurity once they leave the hospital. Older patients who don’t have adequate access to healthy and/or enough food are at higher risk for re-admission to the hospital.

Free meals will be delivered to the homes of up to 150 patients in the pilot phase of the program.

Relaxin research | Your generosity to the Providence Multiple Sclerosis Center enables Providence to move forward with research into new therapies for patients with multiple sclerosis. Because of you, the center is launching new research, funded entirely through philanthropy, into how the protein relaxin works and how it might be able to control this progressive disease.

But there is good news. About 80 percent of cardiovascular disease is preventable if we take some simple steps. Get more exercise.

Thanks to your support, Providence is tripling its capacity to provide Oregonians like Jeff with life-changing cardiac rehab, from 1,000 to 3,000 people per year.

Jeff lost 30 pounds in 12 weeks. “With their coaching and classes, I totally changed my diet.

I’m grateful that my wife was able to come to classes with me, because if both of us weren’t

Community Connections gets people where they need to go How do you get to a doctor’s appointment, do your grocery shopping or get to the bank if you don’t have transportation? This is the dilemma facing some patients and community members in Seaside and throughout Clatsop County.

“We can give them a ride to medical appointments, the gym, even the library – anything that helps keep them healthy and meets their needs,” explained Justin Johnson, program coordinator for Providence Seaside.

“Or if they are able to take the bus, we’ll provide them with a bus ticket or pass. We want to help them maintain their independence.”

Whether it’s a ride, a bus ticket or pass, Community Connections is there to help.

Thanks to your support, Providence Seaside can offer a lift to county residents at no cost.

Besides local trips, the program also provides transportation to and from Providence clinics.

The program grew every month in 2016. When Justin started, there were 30 clients. By the end of the year, more than 270 people had enrolled.

Providence Seaside Foundation

2016 Highlights New Tomosynthesis machine | Thanks to you, Providence Seaside Hospital will be the first on the North Coast to have a 3D Tomosynthesis breast mammography machine. Funds raised through the 2016 Festival of Trees will be used to purchase the “Tomo.” Coastal residents will be able to have their screenings close to home, rather than driving to Portland. The Tomo also supports earlier detection of breast cancer, saving precious time and sometimes lives.

Providence Healthy Smiles | Without good dental care, bacteria in the mouth can cause oral infections that may lead to other infections in the body. Through a multi-year grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, Providence Healthy Smiles helps children in Clatsop County public schools get free or low-cost oral health and dental services. Increasing access to dental care can lead to overall better health for our children.

New surgery tower | Because of your generosity, new laparoscopic equipment provides patients with the same high quality surgery in Seaside as they can get in Portland. “We are so grateful to our donors,” said Manfred Ritter, M.D. “With this new equipment the imagery is crystal clear, making surgery even safer for our patients.” Laparoscopic, or keyhole surgery, uses smaller incisions than traditional surgery. Patients often can go home the same day.

To build the program, Justin reached out to senior care facilities, the Chamber of Commerce and local Rotary clubs to tell people about the service.

Chuck Schlosser wanted to give back for the care he received at Providence. When he heard about the volunteer driving program, he signed up. Chuck was a volunteer for 10 months until he moved to Portland.

Justin plans to continue to grow the program.

“Being able to show compassion for our clients and live out the Providence Mission to care for the most vulnerable is what I love about this program,” he said.

Sarah shares her story of mental health crisis and the need for better care options at the Gala at the Falls.

Child-focused care for children in mental health crisis The emergency department is no place to treat a child in the midst of a mental health crisis. Yet many parents have no other choice when seeking care for their child. Long waits, lack of resources for child-focused mental health care and inadequate beds all contribute to the challenge of compassionately caring for these children.

A young patient named Sarah*16, shared her experience of needing emergency mental health services. She said she spent “72 hours falling further and further into my darkness” while she waited for a bed to become available.

Those “4,320 minutes, where every second counted, were wasted,” she recalled. “Those days were perhaps the most vulnerable ones of my life. Those were days I needed comfort, compassion and kindness. Those were the days

2016 Highlights Camp Erin endowment | Providence Willamette Falls received a generous bequest for hospice funds designated as an endowment for Camp Erin. Camp Erin is a free, weekend-long, overnight camp for children ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them. Through sharing circles, memorial activities, and plenty of play and fun, the young campers can express themselves and learn a variety of ways to cope with their grief.

Pet therapy for hospice patients | A family witnessed firsthand the tremendous benefits of pet therapy when their family member was in hospice care.

Moved to action, the family pooled their resources to add more pet therapy animals for patients in hospice and to encourage certification of new pet therapy animals.

Pet therapy in the hospice setting uses the natural bond between humans and animals to provide comfort to terminally ill patients.

I needed to learn that my life, and I as a person, were valid and worthy of living. Instead, I spent those days in a cold, white room with no windows, waiting for someone else to be discharged so I could get help.�

Because of you, Providence is now remodeling vacant space in the hospital to allow for safe, child-focused care for patients like Sarah who require additional observation, or who are waiting for an inpatient bed or a transfer to other care.

Kyle Smoot, M.D. is actively looking for solutions to help multiple sclerosis patients.

Can melatonin ease multiple sclerosis symptoms?

When Kyle Smoot, M.D., entered medical school, he didn’t really know what type of medicine he wanted to practice. He thought about becoming a gastroenterologist, but shortly after starting med school, his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “Then I had a great neuroscience teacher who really inspired me,” said Dr. Smoot, “and I think that sort of jump-started everything.”

The idea of a new study came to Dr. Smoot as he listened to a lecture by a neuroscientist from Argentina who was studying melatonin and how it may affect MS. Because melatonin naturally decreases in the summer and MS symptoms tend to flare up in the summer, he wondered if there might be a connection between them.

2016 Highlights Kirk Hansen beats brain tumor, sings again | A brain tumor and crushing medical bills couldn’t keep Kirk Hansen from singing. A member of the iSing choir in Beaverton, Ore., Kirk had a lemon-sized tumor located just behind his eyes. Although successfully removed, the tumor created complications that required two more surgeries. He spent more than a month in intensive care. He recovered and went on to sing two solos at an iSing benefit concert for Providence Brain and Spine Institute.

Clinical trials | Because of your support, we have 50 active clinical trials with more than 470 participants underway across six core programs: multiple sclerosis, stroke, ALS, neurosurgery, epilepsy and dementia. In 2016, our research team opened 15 new trials, recruited eight new research staff and five new investigators, and met financial goals.

Doctors now in one center | In May, Providence Brain and Spine Institute celebrated the grand opening of the new Destination Center of Excellence at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, bringing all our neurologists together in one modern facility. A decade in the making, this new center provides easier patient access, spacious exam rooms and increased opportunities for Providence neurologists to collaborate and provide the most advanced care.

“Philanthropy makes our center stronger so we can do research like this,” said Dr. Smoot.

“Having your support also means we are approached to do more studies and participate in more clinical trials.”

Dr. Smoot proposed a small study to see if melatonin would make a difference. He received a grant in 2016 to conduct the study in 2017.

Dr. Smoot will conduct the study with a limited number of patients to see if there is a relationship. If the preliminary results look promising, the study may be expanded to include more patients.

Those most likely to get kidney cancer are older, overweight males who smoke and have high blood pressure or a family history of cancer. While she’ll concede “older,” the rest of the risks do not apply to her.

Joanne set out to find an oncologist who could help her. After interviewing Brendan Curti, M.D., she knew she’d found the one. “It was Dr. Curti’s hope, caring, knowledge and research involvement that convinced me to go out of network to Providence,” said Joanne.

She had the “corrupted kidney” removed in 2011. But in December 2012, a scan revealed a spot on her lung. A biopsy confirmed the cancer had metastasized to her lungs. Kidney

2016 Highlights Gift brings noted researcher to Providence | In 2016 Providence Portland Medical Foundation received its largest-ever gift commitment. The couple want Providence to focus on discovering how more people diagnosed with cancer can benefit from immunotherapy. Their generosity allowed Providence to recruit Eric Tran, Ph.D., from the prestigious National Cancer Institute. With your help, Providence scientists are working to boost immune cells so that more patients can benefit from this life-saving treatment.

Judith Ann Hartmann Endowed Chair | Judith Ann Hartmann was a remarkable woman – teacher, attorney and champion for women’s rights. Diagnosed with breast cancer at age 51, Judy became passionate about cancer research. Throughout her illness, Judy inspired and influenced doctors, scientists, friends and family to work together to cure cancer. Because of Judy and you, Providence bestowed the Judith Ann Hartman Endowed Chair for the Laboratory of Basic Immunology to Andrew Weinberg, Ph.D.

Festival of Trees | You helped us kick off the holiday season for nearly 20,000 visitors to the Providence Festival of Trees in Portland. In addition, you helped us raise more than $1 million to help Providence Cancer Center #FINISHCANCER. Festival proceeds funded critical research in cancer immunotherapy and essential support services for patients and their families.

She was “pushed to the very edge of life” as she went through six intense treatments over eight months. “My confidence in Dr. Curti, my belief in the nurses who kept me alive, and my own Team Warner,” are what kept her going, she said.

She has scans to check for cancer every six months. All have been stable, three years after treatment. “But when my scans come up something other than stable, my only options are coming from those research labs,” said Joanne. Because of your generous donations, Dr. Curti and his colleagues at Providence Cancer Center are able to discover new treatments – and then bring those treatments to Joanne and thousands of other patients.

At the end of treatment, Joanne had to hear difficult words from Dr. Curti. He could promise her only years, not decades, to live. But for Joanne that still means more time to do things that are important to her.

Gerry Bears are ready to help a child understand the processes and procedures they may experience in an upcoming hospital visit.

Like a home away from home Levi has had a chronic disease since he was two.

He experiences high anxiety when visiting the doctor’s office. So when he was referred to the Gerry Frank Center for infusions, his parents Mike and Rebecca weren’t sure what to expect.

“I understand my position is funded by donors.

I am grateful, really, really grateful for these strangers I’ve never met,” she said.

Besides funding her position, you also provide her with many of the tools she uses that are essential to the family-centered care she provides.

Casey Davis is the child life specialist at the Gerry Frank Center. She is the connection between families and medical staff. Because of you, Casey helps families and children through situations that can be very stressful.

And each child gets a Gerry Bear, which helps tremendously in showing children some of the processes they might experience. Using the

2016 Highlights A safe place to play in the hospital | Thanks to you, My Little Waiting Room provides drop-in childcare for parents who need to visit the hospital but aren’t able to find a babysitter – making access to health care possible for hundreds of families. Since opening at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in 2010 and at Providence Portland Medical Center in 2013, the waiting rooms’ use has steadily increased. In 2016, more than 6,300 children were cared for, giving parents peace of mind.

More children attend Camp Erin | The death of a family member, friend or other significant person is a lifelong loss for children. Thanks to you, since 2004 hundreds of children have helped one another grieve, heal and hope again through Camp Erin. In August 2016, 81 children and teens attended Camp Erin, supported by six trained grief therapists and a dedicated group of 161 volunteers, the largest group ever.

Soothing waters ease pain | The aquatic therapy program helps ease the lives of children with disabilities. Children whose disabilities cause their muscles to be rigid and continuously contracted can experience relief in the warm water of the therapy spa. Thank you for giving these special and fragile children a place to relax and experience pure pleasure.

“The Gerry Frank Center has had a positive impact on our lives,” said Rebecca. “Coming here has been a turning point for our family and in Levi’s care and his emotional and physical well-being.”

Gerry Bear, Casey and the child can place an IV in the bear’s arm or put a facemask on it.

Through continual assessment, Casey and the team at the Gerry Frank Center have helped Levi find the coping strategies that work best for him. Rebecca says he is more relaxed now when he has an appointment because he knows what to expect and he knows his caregivers.

“It’s a home away from home when Levi is here,” added Mike. “Thank you for your help and generosity.”

Judy and Darrell are thrilled that he is able to play softball again after receiving a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

A champion for lifelong fitness Former world softball champion Darrell Goodwin, 79, is a disciplined lifelong athlete. So when he started experiencing shortness of breath, he knew he needed a checkup.

Jacob Abraham, M.D., medical director for the center, recommended that Darrell receive a left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, a mechanical pump implanted in the chest to help a weakened heart.

Darrell went to see his cardiologist, who had fitted him with a pacemaker years earlier. From there he was referred to the Providence Center for Advanced Heart Disease, where tests revealed a serious problem. “My left ventricle was not pumping blood the way it should,” he said. “If I didn’t do something soon, it could be fatal.”

The LVAD doesn’t replace the heart; it just helps the heart do its job. “We’re making enormous progress with these devices,” says Dr. Abraham.

“We have far more people who could use a heart transplant than we have hearts available.

LVADs help to close that gap.”

2016 Highlights Center for Prevention and Wellness | Providence Heart Institute’s cardiac rehabilitation program has been growing 20 percent a year. To meet the growing need, the program is doubling its capacity at the new Steve and Donna Shepard Cardiac Rehabilitation Heart Fitness Center at Providence St. Vincent. The Center for Prevention and Wellness also includes community programs such as Play Smart™ the youth heart-screening program and Heart to Start, our heart-healthy exercise program.

Center for Clinical Care | The Center for Clinical Care opened in 2016 at Providence St. Vincent, providing a one-stop experience for patients who require advanced care. Thanks to years of your dedicated support for facilities and program development, the center’s Structural Heart Program emerged as one of the top 10 sites in the country for transcatheter aortic valve replacements and served 300 patients from throughout the Pacific Northwest and as far away as South Carolina.

Research and innovation | Providence Heart Institute participated in 37 clinical trials and helped secure FDA approval for treatments that include new TAVR applications; the world’s smallest pacemaker; and a stent that opens arteries and then dissolves, leaving them unclogged and flexible.

Your support allows our researchers to publish in the nation’s top cardiology journals and allows our research team to continue to innovate and bring new treatments to our patients.

Darrell received his LVAD in September 2015 and, with strong support from his family and Dr. Abraham’s team, was back on the softball diamond the next spring. “We don’t talk enough about what seniors can do in sports,’” he says, “Not just baseball, all kinds of sports, everything.”

Providence Orthopedic Institute

2016 Highlights Data provides insight into better care | Providence Orthopedic Institute performs more than 12,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures each year. Thanks to your support, we can draw on data from throughout the larger Providence system to produce published research in prestigious medical journals and present at national and international orthopedic conferences – all of which helps in collaborating to discover effective new treatments for our patients. With a projected 174 percent increase in the number of hip and knee replacements during the next 15 years, this research is vitally important and wouldn’t be possible without your support.

Process review improves patient care | Providence Orthopedic Institute doctors and researchers studied how to streamline and improve care for hip and knee replacement patients. By reviewing key parts of the entire process, the team reduced the amount of time patients stayed in the hospital by 18 percent – a key factor in patients’ physical and emotional well-being. We also increased the number of patients who were able to return home instead of going to a skilled nursing facility.

Best practices reviewed | Providence Orthopedic Institute researchers co-led a national study that reviewed best practices in caring for patients after orthopedic surgery, as well as reducing costs for total joint replacement patients. We reviewed four different protocols, including: integrating a nurse as program coordinator; implementing a standardized process used by all members of a practice’s office staff; including physical therapists early in the rehabilitation process; and using a preferred post-surgery provider network of skilled nursing facilities and home health agencies. The study showed orthopedic doctors with defined post-surgical care pathways had consistent decreases in costs while also providing optimal care.

Gift from her father becomes gift to her children Sometimes we have hidden treasures that could benefit others, and we may not even be aware of it. “These are resources we may not think about, that could be used to benefit our communities,” said Maija Yasui of Hood River.

Today, two of the hospital’s birthing rooms carry Maija’s family surnames: Annala for her father and Yasui for her father-in-law.

“I hope that when people look at their resources they look past the dollar amount, because that doesn’t matter,” she said. “What matters is what that gift generates in terms of good will, increasing philanthropy, giving and caring. All of those things are 10 to 100 times the value of my life insurance policy. When you look at the number of people one gift can inspire, it’s tremendous.”

One of Maija’s hidden resources was a life insurance policy, set up by her father decades ago to fund her college education. After Maija earned a full-ride scholarship, the policy “sort of sat on the back burner,” she said. “But every year when I paid on it, I thought about how it might be useful someday.”

Remember Providence

The opportunity to put it to use came when Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital was building its birthing center. Maija’s twin granddaughters were expected around the same time the center would open. To celebrate, Maija donated the insurance policy to the hospital. “My dad’s gift to me became a gift to my children, and to their children,” she said.

Carolyn Winter Challenge

$5 million challenge launched in October Dedication, determination and love are just a few words used to describe Carolyn Winter.

Her vision of helping those less fortunate is what drives her to excel and to be a fearless champion for the people and communities served by Providence.

Prior to his passing, longtime friend and donor Robert W. Franz made a significant gift to Providence to recognize Carolyn and her good work. In the few months since launching the fund, we’ve received more than $3.4 million toward the $5 million goal.

Through the years, Carolyn has led efforts to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for Providence Foundations in Oregon. She has built strong friendships and mentored up-and-coming development teams. She has comforted patients and their families as they faced medical uncertainties.

Carolyn will tell you her true passions are finding a cure for cancer, ensuring kids have healthy lives, making it possible for people to access the latest in heart care, and giving everyone access to leading health care advancements. Her satisfaction comes not with raising millions of dollars, but in uncovering your passions and allowing you the opportunity to help others.

This past year we celebrated the 160th year of the Sisters of Providence coming to the Northwest. It was Dec. 8, 1856 – the dead of winter – when Mother Joseph and four sisters trudged from the steamer landing on the Columbia, up the hill to the bishop’s house. It was cold and wet and miserable. No one expected them. They didn’t speak the language. They knew no one. They relied on their faith and the kindness of others.

They were our first fundraisers, seeking support to help build the services needed to care for people – orphanages, schools and hospitals.

And so it remains today. Providence is a leader in health care in Oregon, the Northwest and the nation. Like the Sisters, we rely on the generosity of others to support our work.

As important, we rely on the belief you have in our ministry. It is through you that we are able to tell the stories of how health care changes lives.
