Giving back for the next generation Mina and Jeff Alsdorf continue their families’ philanthropic legacies with a generous donation to Providence Swedish Cancer Institute

W

hen Mina and Jeff Alsdorf chose to make a gift to Providence Swedish, they weren’t just investing in research for early cancer detection — they were also fulfilling a calling from their families to pay it forward.

For Mina, who is originally from the Philippines, the gift has deeply personal meaning. Her father was a physician during World War II and cared for citizens who were left behind as well as those in prison camps. At night, he slept with his shoes on so he could run to the ambulance on a moment’s notice and begin

treating the sick and injured. This instilled in Mina an immense respect for physicians and the medical community.

After moving to the Seattle area and becoming pregnant, Mina received a recommendation from a friend to seek care at Providence Swedish, and she never looked back. Her daughter was born at Providence Swedish and, when she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2001, Mina returned for treatment.

Her obstetrician-gynecologist at the time called in a gynecologic oncologist who had just joined Providence Swedish to assist with the surgery: Charles Drescher, M.D. Mina doesn’t remember meeting Dr. Drescher at the time but, two years later when she was diagnosed with a rare form of skin cancer called Paget’s disease of the vulva, they reconnected. Over the next 23 years, Dr. Drescher guided Mina through nine separate surgeries.

“Never once when I had those surgeries did I think I was not going to be okay,” Mina says.

“I had the utmost confidence in Dr. Drescher.”

For Jeff, his wife’s health concerns granted him an opportunity to renew the focus of Alsdorf Foundation, a philanthropic organization started by his late mother, who had a vision of helping others in need.

Inspired by the care Mina received, the Alsdorfs decided to contribute the largest single donation — and the most personal gift — from Alsdorf Foundation to support Dr. Drescher’s work at Providence Swedish. They are particularly excited about Dr. Drescher’s research creating an Atlas involving close collaborations with investigators nationwide to track how ovarian cancer progresses, researching cancer prevention, developing early-phase cancer detection tests, and reaching more populations who may face barriers to accessing cancer screenings.

“The possibility that this work can lead to a vaccine,” Mina says, “it seems so amazing, incredible, unbelievable that this money can lead to something that generation after generation can benefit from.”

And, for Mina and Jeff, that’s why they choose to give back.

“We need to set an example for the young people who come after us,” Mina says. “We were blessed to have had Jeff’s mother and her vision.

I don’t know what my grandsons’ futures are going to be, but if they can see an example, they’ll know what to do when they have more than enough.”

Personalized support for every pregnancy journey Gifts to Swedish’s integrated doula program uplift families in critical need

T

here was no time to wait. Jayla was 34 weeks pregnant with severe preeclampsia and needed immediate surgery to treat a life-threatening condition. Her partner, though, remained miles away in another town, from where Jayla had been urgently transferred to Providence Swedish First Hill.

In a typical health care setting, Jayla would have had to grapple with the fear and uncertainty of her situation alone. At Swedish, thanks to the landmark support of Apex Foundation and other generous community members, she didn’t have to.

birth. While birth doulas are covered by some insurance plans, philanthropy makes it possible for uninsured or underinsured patients, as well as those with urgent complications or who have experienced a loss, to receive these vital services for free.

For Jayla, that meant being paired with Swedish doula Jimmiesha Scholl, who was able to meet her in the intensive care unit prior to surgery to establish a rapport and make a recovery and post-birth plan together. Having someone at the hospital focused on not just her physical health but also her emotional well-being was crucial, Jayla notes.

Scholl stayed in the operating room while physicians delivered Jayla’s baby via emergency C-section. Later, she helped Jayla process her baby’s birth and facilitated connections in the neonatal intensive care unit for both Jayla and her partner, who was eventually able to join her at the hospital.

There are hundreds of other patients like Jayla who’ve had their pregnancy experience transformed thanks to the generosity of Apex Foundation and other major supporters of Swedish’s doula program. Gifts like these enable us to provide free doula services to over 200

patients each year. Now, more than ever, these patients are also in need of postpartum and bereavement support.

Take Kai, who was eagerly preparing for the birth of their child when the usual fluttery kicks of activity during the third trimester stopped. An ultrasound at Providence Swedish Edmonds later confirmed the worst: the baby had no heartbeat.

Kai faced not only losing their baby but also still having to endure a devastating delivery.

Immediately, our doula services team stepped in to help, connecting Kai with Ash Woods, a full-spectrum doula who has worked with a variety of family structures.

After meeting Kai and their partner at the hospital, Woods was able to provide physical and emotional support in a compassionate, authentic, and identity-affirming way. Later, Kai’s family expressed just how grateful they were for Woods’ gentle presence on that day and in the weeks after.

With their unparalleled support for Swedish’s doula program, our donors have uplifted hundreds of patients like Jayla and Kai in their most vulnerable moments. Thanks to philanthropy, we’re now able to ensure that no one has to face this journey alone.

Ivy Center team with John Deininger, co-founder of Lily Pointe Foundation

Changing the game for brain cancer research Inspirational gifts fuel a groundbreaking clinical trial at Providence Swedish

F

or years, researchers at Providence Swedish Neuroscience Institute’s Ben and Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment have sought to find a cure for devastating neurological conditions like glioblastoma. This aggressive form of brain cancer has a median survival time of just 12 to 18 months and, currently, has only a few treatment options available.

Enter Laura and Henry Weaks of Lily Pointe Foundation, whose family has a personal connection with glioblastoma. They met with the Ivy Center’s Charles Cobbs, M.D., and Parvinder Hothi, Ph.D., to discuss the team’s work in creating a novel immunotherapy vaccine. This led to a transformational gift, one that inspired other major donors and dozens of community members who contributed to Dr. Cobbs’ Racing for a Cure grassroots fundraising effort.

With these funds, the Ivy Center team has begun examining the effectiveness of their

proprietary RNA vaccine. The vaccine harnesses the power of cytomegalovirus, a type of viral infection Dr. Cobbs first discovered in glioblastoma, to incite a massive immune response. Other immunotherapies for the condition have only been administered via intravenous injection, allowing them to run rampant through the body, miss the tumor, or get blocked by the notorious blood-brain barrier.

This new vaccine is instead injected directly into the brain tumor during biopsy, targeting the cancer directly and providing a safe, more focused treatment.

The team has been fortunate enough to receive approval from the Food and Drug Administration to administer compassionate use of the vaccine to select patients, delaying disease progression and prolonging their quality of life.

Now in its second year, the research project holds the potential to cure not only glioblastoma but also other solid-tumor cancers and remains a testament to the power of philanthropy.

A lifesaving legacy How the Locke family’s generosity has advanced cardiac care in the Pacific Northwest

A

young man’s dream, a mother’s vision, and a family’s commitment to improving cardiac care have made Providence Swedish Heart & Vascular Institute the leading cardiovascular care center in the region.

For nearly 50 years, the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust has been a cornerstone of generosity, advancing innovation, expanding access, and saving lives of cardiac patients.

These tremendous acts of compassion were inspired by a man born a century ago and the care he received at Providence Swedish.

The roots of generosity In 1925, John L. Locke Jr. was born with patent ductus arteriosus, a heart defect in which a fetal blood vessel that typically closes shortly after birth remains open. The condition affects blood circulation and forces the heart and lungs

to work harder than they typically would. At the time John was born, there was no cure. He was physically weak and limited throughout his childhood and early adulthood.

But John’s life changed in 1954 when surgeons at Providence Swedish repaired his heart defect in one of the region’s first open-heart surgeries.

The operation dramatically improved John’s quality of life. He went on to develop businesses in Alaska and assumed a leadership role in his family’s business, Fisher Miller, Inc. Tragically, John later developed inoperable brain cancer and passed away when he was just 42 years old. Shortly before he died, John revised his will so that a large portion of his estate would be used “for the care, treatment, and research of heart disease.”

Bequests from John and his mother, Irene Fisher Locke, led to the 1975 founding of the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust, designed to support innovative and comprehensive heart care at University of Washington and Providence Swedish in perpetuity. Since then, the trust has contributed more than $11 million to advance cardiac care at Providence Swedish.

Today, Robin Knepper, Irene’s granddaughter, is chair of the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust.

Robin’s daughter, Lida Buckner, is secretary of the trust and has served on the Swedish Foundation Board of Governors.

“My great grandmother was brilliant in how she structured the trust,” Lida says. “A lot of people don’t realize how much philanthropy influences the level of care a medical institution can provide.”

More recently, Providence Swedish launched the Advanced Cardiac Support Program in 2015 thanks to generous support from the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust. This innovative program, led by medical director John Mignone, M.D., Ph.D., has elevated the standard of care for heart failure patients by utilizing the most advanced medicine and technologies to improve the quality and length of patient lives.

“In a relatively short time we created a worldclass program that I’m extremely proud of,” says Dr. Mignone. “And it wouldn’t have been possible without the Locke Trust.”

The John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust also supported the 2015 launch of the Nurse Navigator Program — which provides personalized expert guidance to patients with complex heart and vascular conditions — and the Swedish Comprehensive Atrial Fibrillation Network to expand access to leading-edge treatments and increase participation in research trials.

“There is no better hospital in our region for clinical care,” Lida says. “And with Swedish Foundation, I know John’s legacy is in good hands.”

A comprehensive approach to addressing hypertension In 2025, the John L. Locke Jr. Charitable Trust played a key role in addressing the widespread impact of uncontrolled hypertension with the launch of the Advanced Hypertension Clinic.

The clinic is designed to break down traditional barriers to effective hypertension management and improve access to care, including specialized interventions and novel therapies available through clinical trials.

Alison Lee

Returning to the NICU How gratitude inspired a family’s full-circle story of philanthropy

T

wenty-one years ago, Alison Lee entered the world weighing less than a bag of sugar — fragile, tiny, and in a delicate state in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Swedish.

In August 2025, Alison returned, this time as an aspiring health care professional and a living

testament to the power of hope, medicine, and human connection.

“I was in awe,” Alison says. “It was so evident how hard the NICU team works and how much of their heart they put into their job. I could envision myself doing that in the future.”

Alison, now a senior studying human science at Georgetown University, is preparing for a career in maternal and neonatal care. It’s a path heavily influenced by her own NICU journey.

She was born at 30 weeks and weighed just two pounds, eight ounces. After spending six weeks in the NICU, she was released at four pounds, eight ounces. Alison, of course, remembers none of this. Her mother, Donna Lee, recalls her daughter’s stay with vivid detail.

“Everyone was so kind and so encouraging,” Donna says. “They took such great care of us.”

The Lees were so impressed by the care and compassion they received at such a delicate time that they decided to make an annual donation to Swedish to support the NICU. “We were scared and didn’t know what to expect, but we always felt like we were in great hands there, which is why we decided to donate.

It was a no-brainer,” Donna says. “Whatever we could provide the next family going forward, we wanted to help.”

Over the years, Donna shared memories of Alison’s time in the NICU with her daughter.

“Growing up, I heard all of these stories about how well the NICU staff treated my family,” says Alison. “It was obviously very hard, but they made it as hospitable as possible.”

The Lee family has remained closely connected to Swedish since Alison’s birth. She’s joined her parents at Swedish Foundation philanthropy events and has met many of the nurses and doctors who continue to care for newborns and their families.

One of those events sparked an idea: celebrating her 21st birthday with her mother during a NICU reunion.

“It was obviously emotional for her, reliving those moments of not knowing what was going to happen to your baby,” Alison says. “But she loved it — she loved seeing all the little babies, and she was amazed by how much they’ve renovated the NICU. It looks incredible.”

During the Lees’ two-hour visit, Alison spoke with the nurse manager and staff, gaining a better understanding of their dedication and compassion.

“I left there with a sense of gratefulness and inspiration,” Alison says. “It was really fun — and really emotional.”

Alison hopes her story offers some comfort and hope to those families currently navigating the NICU experience.

“It’s a really scary time,” Alison says. “But I want parents to know that there are a lot of good stories — and a lot of NICU survivors out there.”

What Hughes Tower stands for A community investment in care, compassion, and the people who make it work

P

at Hughes has never measured success by recognition. For him, it has always been about responsibility — about people knowing they’ve done meaningful work and leaving a place better than they found it.

Over a lifetime as a business builder and employer, that belief took practical form.

Work mattered because it gave people purpose.

Responsibility mattered because livelihoods depended on it.

“At the end of the day,” Pat says, “individuals need to know they’ve accomplished something.”

It was never abstract. As his companies grew, so did his sense of obligation — to the people who showed up each morning and to the families who relied on them.

That way of thinking extended far beyond the workplace. It shaped how he and his late wife, Mary Ellen, raised their family. It informed their commitment to education and opportunity.

And it quietly underpinned a relationship with Providence Swedish that would unfold over decades.

For Pat, impact has always been about what lasts and who it serves.

Four decades of showing up For more than four decades, Pat and Mary Ellen quietly supported care at Providence Swedish.

Not as a single act of generosity, but as an extension of how they lived. What began as gratitude for care received over the years deepened into trust, and trust into partnership.

Mary Ellen was Pat’s life partner for more than 65 years. Together, they raised a family grounded in personal responsibility, education, and service to others. Health care became deeply personal as both experienced care at Providence Swedish — a relationship that Pat credits with extending their lives and allowing them to remain active and engaged longer than they might otherwise have expected.

Following Mary Ellen’s passing, Pat has expressed deep gratitude for the care she received and for the people who supported their family during difficult moments.

Support for Providence Swedish was never about a single decision. It was about continuing to show up for an organization they trusted and for a community they believed deserved strong, compassionate care.

That belief informed decades of giving. Time and again, Pat and Mary Ellen chose to support nurses through education, scholarships, and professional development — investing in the people who make compassionate care possible every day.

These experiences did more than shape gratitude. They built trust. Trust that care at Providence Swedish is delivered by people deeply committed to those they serve.

The people who make care work Pat’s trust in Providence Swedish was shaped most clearly through lived experience, particularly during moments when care mattered most. When Mary Ellen suffered a serious fall and spent time in intensive care, he saw firsthand what it meant to depend on a health care team, hour after hour, day after day.

It was during that time that his deep respect for nurses took shape. While physicians played an essential role in diagnosis and treatment, it was nurses who were a constant presence, including monitoring, explaining, anticipating needs, and guiding both patient and family through uncertainty.

“They were there every time I pushed the button,” Pat recalls. “That’s what keeps a hospital running.”

For Pat, this was not a matter of comparison, but of continuity. He has long believed that strong institutions depend on experienced professionals who carry responsibility over time.

People who show up, shift after shift, and make complex systems work. Nursing, in his view, embodies that commitment.

A continuation of commitment For Pat, the decision to support what is now known as Hughes Tower did not represent a departure from decades of giving, but a continuation. It reflects the same belief that has guided his life and philanthropy: strong communities are built by investing in people and in the environments that allow them to do their best work.

Asked what the tower should stand for, Pat is clear. It represents a community commitment to the many lives it will save and, just as importantly, extend. In his view, the future of care depends not only on medical expertise, but on spaces designed to support caregivers and patients alike, today and for generations to come.

Hughes Tower reflects that shared responsibility, made possible through the generosity of many donors who believe in the future of care at Providence Swedish.

The new facility is designed to expand access to care, strengthen emergency and critical services, and create a modern, healing environment where care teams can meet the growing needs of the community. For Pat, those goals are inseparable from the people who will work within the tower’s walls.

“This isn’t about a name on a building,” he says.

“It’s about making sure people are taken care of.”

In that sense, Hughes Tower stands not as a monument, but as an expression of trust — in an institution, in its caregivers, and in a shared commitment to the well-being of the community.

What endures When Pat reflects on the future, he does so with the same clarity that has guided his life and giving. Institutions matter, he believes, because people depend on them. Not just today, but long after individual names and moments have faded.

Hughes Tower is part of that continuum.

It represents confidence in an institution that will care for generations to come and in the people who will carry that work forward. For Pat, the measure of success remains unchanged: whether people feel supported, whether care is delivered with dignity, and whether communities are stronger because of the choices made today.

In the end, what matters most to Pat is stewardship — ­ ensuring the work continues and the impact endures.

On the afternoon of June 4, 2025, a ceremonial topping-out of Hughes Tower illuminated a defining moment in the future of care. Donors, board members, and community leaders gathered to celebrate a shared promise rooted in the belief that access to exceptional care should grow alongside the region it serves.

A day earlier, Providence Swedish caregivers also imprinted their names on the beam.

“I bleed Swedish blue” Honoring Dr. Nancy Auer’s legacy of leadership in Hughes Tower

T

hrough nearly 40 years of service, leadership, and philanthropy, Nancy Auer, M.D., has built a legacy that touches the lives of every Providence Swedish patient and caregiver.

Continuing her commitment to the community, Dr. Auer has invested in the future with a gift to support Hughes Tower.

A legacy of leadership Providence Swedish’s commitment to clinical excellence today is a testament to Dr. Auer’s pioneering leadership. Dr. Auer served as Director of Emergency Services, became the first female Chief of Staff, and went on to become the first female Chief Medical Officer. After retirement, she became the first female chair of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Auer paved the way for generations of physicians and leaders that followed, setting the standard for patient care.

Dr. Nancy Auer’s Providence Swedish legacy extends from the first Emergency Department on First Hill to the new ED entrance at Hughes Tower.

Dr. Auer was an instrumental figure behind the development of Providence Swedish’s first Emergency Department (ED). She joined Providence Swedish in 1980, just as the first ED opened its doors. In 1998, she became the first female president of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

“I see the emergency room as the interface between society and the rest of medicine,” Dr. Auer says. “I loved the variety of patients we got to see and taking care of problems immediately. It was a very rewarding time.”

Over the years, Dr. Auer didn’t just share her talents with Providence Swedish, she made numerous philanthropic gifts to help improve clinical care. Since 1986, Dr. Auer has committed more than $2.3 million to Swedish.

“Swedish is in my blood,” Dr. Auer says.

“If I get cut, I bleed Swedish blue. I have seen how philanthropy improves patient care and it’s important to me to give back to the organization I think of as my family.”

Embracing a community asset Dr. Auer was involved in planning Hughes Tower years ago when she was Chief Medical Officer of Providence Swedish, and she looks forward to seeing those plans come to fruition when the tower opens. She is especially excited about the new ED, a state-of-the-art facility that has been designed to improve access for Seattle’s growing, diverse population with thoughtful accommodations that will keep elderly patients safer and provide better support to patients seeking behavioral health care.

The Hughes Tower ED entry court will be named in Dr. Auer’s honor, a permanent tribute to her leadership. She hopes the recognition will inspire other community members to join her in supporting Providence Swedish.

“Philanthropy is a critical part of patient care today, and it’s going to be even more important in the future,” Dr. Auer says. “Providence Swedish is an asset in our community, and I hope the entire community can come together to support it as such.”

or Connie Wong, philanthropy has never been about “giving back.” The phrase implies obligation, a sense of repayment. Instead, she prefers a different word: sharing.

“I don’t like to say ‘giving back,’” Connie says.

“Sharing is different. Sharing means you choose to participate.”

Sharing reflects choice and intention. It reflects the belief that the opportunities she has been fortunate to build — through education, career, and community — can be extended to others in meaningful ways.

That philosophy shapes not only why she and Gary give, but how they decide where to invest their time and resources.

Connie Wong and Gary Kunis’ generous gift, naming the Hughes Tower Sky Garden, helps breathe greenery and life into the space.

How they decide where to invest Connie and Gary — both longtime leaders in business and technology communities — approach philanthropy with the same discipline they bring to leadership and business. Vision matters, but intention alone is not enough.

What earns their confidence is execution.

They look for organizations with focused leadership, clear priorities, and a track record of delivering on what they promise. Transparency, structure, and follow-through matter. Institutions that try to be everything at once often struggle to do anything well. Those that understand their strengths, and commit to them, stand out.

As Gary puts it, the question is always whether an organization knows what it is built to do.

“What matters is what an institution is trying to deliver,” he says, “and whether it has the leadership and structure to deliver it.”

For Connie and Gary, execution is the difference between good intentions and lasting impact. This mindset has guided their support of education, research, and civic institutions over the years. It also shaped how they came to trust Providence Swedish.

Why health care matters to families and communities For Gary, health care is foundational. It sits alongside education and infrastructure as one of the core systems that allows a community to function and thrive. Without it, everything else becomes harder.

For Connie, that belief is deeply personal.

When Connie had to navigate her son’s care, it required persistence, careful attention to detail, and a willingness to ask hard questions. It reinforced that health care is not just about medicine, but about systems that must support families with clarity, responsiveness, and compassion — especially in moments of uncertainty.

In those moments, Connie found that Providence Swedish was willing to work in partnership — listening carefully, respecting informed perspectives, and remaining focused on what mattered most: making decisions centered on the patient and family.

Together, Connie and Gary see health care as both a personal and civic responsibility, one that demands excellence, humanity, and trust.

Building what lasts

Hughes Tower represents a project where long-term planning and community need align.

The expansion of emergency and cardiovascular care responds directly to growing demand in the region. It reflects sustained planning and a commitment to meeting patients where they are, often in moments when time, access, and expertise matter most.

For Connie and Gary, the decision to support Hughes Tower was grounded in purpose, not recognition.

“This was an opportunity to support something necessary,” Connie says, “not just meaningful.”

It was an investment in infrastructure, people, and partnerships — designed to deliver measurable impact for the community.

For Connie and Gary, naming is not about ego.

It is about signaling possibility. It’s about showing what thoughtful philanthropy can help make real and inviting others to step forward in their own way.

Their confidence in Providence Swedish is rooted in leadership and culture. They value leaders who listen, who remain grounded, and who execute with intention. Over time, that consistency builds trust.

Their philanthropy reflects how they built their own success — by taking thoughtful risks, backing strong leadership, and investing in people and partnerships positioned to deliver real results. That belief is especially evident in their support for education and scholarships, where creating opportunity for first-generation students and young people has long been a priority.

In sharing their resources, Connie and Gary are not looking backward. They are investing forward — in people, in systems, and in spaces designed to care for the whole person.

Designing spaces that care for the human spirit Within Hughes Tower, one space stood out immediately to Connie: the Sky Garden.

Hospitals can feel overwhelming. In Seattle, where long stretches of gray weather are common, they can also feel draining and isolating. Connie was drawn to the idea of a space filled with natural light, plant life, and a sense of openness — a place where patients and families could pause, breathe, and reconnect with the world outside.

“When you’re in a hospital, it can feel heavy,” she says. “Seeing sky, light, and greenery changes how you experience that moment.”

The care environment matters. When families are waiting for news, hopeful or difficult, having access to nature and light can shape how that moment is held and remembered.

Their support includes naming the Sky Garden, a space they saw as central to the patient and family experience within Hughes Tower.

Shavonne Tate

Making her mess her mission Shavonne Tate found special purpose in her cancer diagnosis

I

t started with a visit to her dermatologist.

Shavonne Tate had a persistent skin condition that affected multiple people in her family, so her dermatologist recommended a genetic test.

“The test wasn’t covered by insurance and was going to cost $250 out of pocket,” says Shavonne, who was 36 at the time, “but I thought it might be worth it.”

Through the test, Shavonne learned she had a gene mutation that put her at an increased risk for certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. Armed with this knowledge, Shavonne knew she had to get screened for breast cancer earlier and more often than patients who had an average risk. In October 2023, one of these early cancer screenings revealed she had invasive ductal carcinoma.

For Shavonne, the early diagnosis and knowledge were empowering. Her oncology team at Providence Swedish Cancer Institute had a treatment plan ready, and Shavonne resolved to give back.

“I said to myself that I am going to make my mess my mission,” Shavonne says.

She organized a fundraiser at her gym to spread awareness about the importance of genetic testing, especially within underserved communities. Her efforts raised over $2,000, with plans to continue fundraising in the years to come.

“People shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table and getting a test that could save their life,” Shavonne says. “I don’t have Oprah money, but every little bit helps.”

Tricia Johnson

Twenty-five years of support and counting How Northwest Hope & Healing continues its legacy of giving for breast and gynecologic cancer patients

L

ike most great things, Northwest Hope & Healing started as a small idea and grew into something more.

Founder Christine Smith, a West Seattle mother of two, wanted to channel her breast cancer diagnosis in 2000 into a positive experience for others in the community.

She began collecting comfort items — warm socks, candles, lotions — and assembled the supplies in gift baskets for Providence Swedish Cancer Institute to give out to patients. The gift baskets evolved into healing boxes, and Christine’s efforts grew to include a fundraising luncheon and financial grants for patients.

Today, Northwest Hope & Healing is the only organization in Seattle that provides direct, immediate assistance to breast and gynecologic cancer patients via Providence Swedish’s financial assistance program. In 2025, it celebrated its milestone 25th anniversary with a $300,000 donation to Providence Swedish Cancer Institute, the organization’s single-largest gift yet.

“I think the most amazing part about the grant distribution is that it is no barrier, no application, no wait time,” says Tricia Johnson, Northwest Hope & Healing’s executive director. “If you are a patient and you’re experiencing the financial strain that often comes with a cancer diagnosis, which is a real thing, then you can walk out with a financial grant.”

Patients often use their grants to cover rent, groceries, transportation, or other everyday living costs, but whatever the purpose, Northwest Hope & Healing’s focus remains on lightening the load.

“It’s not necessarily going to take away the long-term financial aspect of a cancer diagnosis, but it’s a symbol of hope,” Tricia explains. “It’s letting people know that they’re not alone in this journey.”

Tricia’s involvement with Northwest Hope & Healing began with her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2012. It was an incredibly frightening time, she recalls, but then she received a healing basket on her doorstep. When she found out the organization was directly connected to Providence Swedish, it made it all the easier to get involved.

“I really believe that I am present today because of my care team at Providence Swedish,” Tricia says. “There’s such a deep sense of gratitude that I am here and have the privilege of doing this work.”

Like Tricia, many of Northwest Hope & Healing’s board members have a direct connection with breast or gynecologic cancer.

Some are physicians at Providence Swedish who care for the very patients the organization helps support, while others are survivors or partners

of those who have intimate familiarity with the cancer journey.

This firsthand knowledge helped contribute to Northwest Hope & Healing’s decision in 2025 to expand its support into the post-treatment journey. In addition to their 25th-anniversary donation to financial assistance, Northwest Hope & Healing contributed an additional gift to fund a Providence Swedish pilot program called PAVING the Path to Wellness. PAVING provides emotional and peer support for breast and gynecologic cancer survivors and is designed to improve coping strategies, build resilience, and enhance quality of life and social connection.

“I can personally speak that the posttreatment journey, in many ways, is harder than when you’re going through treatment,” Tricia says, describing how isolating it felt for her regular appointments and checkups to suddenly stop once her treatment was complete.

PAVING’s goal is to help patients understand the mental and physical aspects of their postcancer treatment and build a community for the path forward. After the initial 12-week pilot program, 90 percent of participants said they had improved emotional and social well-being.

“There’s so much of the journey that you can’t truly understand unless you’ve been through it,” Tricia says. “For us to be able to now do this, it makes it full circle so we’re not just treating the disease but also what happens to the patient.

It just feels like the right place to be.”
