Advancing clinical excellence

GREATER ACCESS TO ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

New surgical system aids complex surgeries and minimizes recovery time

Community donations topping $500,000 moved Providence St. Mary closer to acquiring a da Vinci surgical system, enhancing local care for the future.

An innovative addition to Providence St. Mary surgical care is closer to becoming a reality, thanks to your generosity. Donors contributed more than $500,000 in 2024 toward the cost of Walla Walla’s first da Vinci Surgical System, moving us beyond the mid-point of the fundraising goal of $1 million.

Why the system is beneficial

With this new system, surgeons will have the ability to perform complex surgeries with added precision while minimizing recovery time.

From a sitting position in the operating room, surgeons using a da Vinci system view 3D high-definition images to better guide their tiny instruments, offering increased motion and stability.

Community contributions are crucial

Your commitment is improving the quality of our local health care and making this significant investment possible, with the remainder of the da Vinci’s cost provided by Providence.

A da Vinci robot at Providence St. Mary would be used for a variety of procedures, including treatment for the kidney, bladder, uterus and prostate. It will also allow Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center surgeons to treat more cancer patients, close to home.

“The right technology at our fingertips increases the availability and access to care for our community.”

Seated at an operating room console, a surgeon directs use of tiny instruments using small incisions, translating to faster recovery times.

Improving health equity

Thousands of newborns sleep safer at home through bilingual education

For a decade, the Sleep Sack Program has given all Providence St. Mary Birth Center families the training and tools to keep their newborns safe.

Thanks to generous contributions, 2024 marked the 10th year of the Sleep Sack Program at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. The program empowers local families with education and precautions to aid in the prevention of sudden unexplained infant death.

More than 600 infants are born at Providence St. Mary Family Birth Center yearly, and the Sleep Sack Program provides bilingual education and safe sleep modeling using wearable blankets that replace loose bedding, which can cover an airway.

Families learn to replicate safe habits

To emphasize consistent safe-sleep practices and inspire all families to follow these recommendations, your gifts ensure all babies delivered at Providence St. Mary receive their own sleep sack and

language-appropriate educational materials to take home — all at no cost to them.

This education and modeling during a hospital stay supports our goal of lowering the risk of sleep-related infant deaths.

“Sudden

unexplained infant death disproportionately impacts families experiencing socioeconomic disparities, who may not be able to afford a wearable blanket or safe place for sleep.”

-- Robyn Rivera, director, Women & Children Services

All infants born at Providence St. Mary receive a wearable blanket, thanks to donor gifts.

Providing technology and tools

LEADING-EDGE CANCER DETECTION NOW AVAILABLE

Improved mammography technology offers earlier diagnosis and treatment

Contrast-enhanced mammography is offered at very few Pacific Northwest facilities, and thanks to your philanthropy, Providence St. Mary is now one.

Your gifts changed the course of care for the first patient screened for cancer using technology you brought to Providence St. Mary. Her traditional mammogram showed potential cancerous lesions, so the woman received a contrast-enhanced mammogram, which helped doctors identify additional lesions that might not have been caught otherwise.

Beneficial to those with dense tissue

In contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), iodine is used as a dye solution through an IV before a mammogram. Fast and safe, CEM is useful for patients with dense breast tissue – about half of all women. This new technology can better highlight potentially cancerous lesions in diagnostic images since dense tissue and cancer both appear white on a mammogram.

Thanks to donors, Providence St. Mary is one of the only medical centers in the Pacific Northwest to offer CEM.

Technology increases treatment urgency

Using these new tools, radiologists have identified masses not previously seen on a patient's original mammogram, improving the accuracy of the diagnosis.

Because you funded contrast-enhanced mammography, the very first patient treated —

and many others since — have been able to start their fight against breast cancer immediately.

“Contrast-enhanced mammography increases clarity for cancer detection, allowing for earlier treatment.”

A traditional mammogram image (left), compared to contrast-enhanced mammography, which highlights a tumor in the middle of the tissue

136 volunteers provided service to Providence St. Mary, serving on boards and easing the way of patients and caregivers.

152 guests stayed at Herring House, which offers temporary lodging to outof-town patients receiving cancer care locally.

12 scholarships totaling $20,000 were awarded to Providence St. Mary caregivers to advance their clinical careers close to home.

Advanced tools improve cardiac care

Our community of generous donors helped outfit Walla Walla’s only cardiac catheterization lab with the latest equipment and diagnostic tools.

Your gifts to renovate and improve the Providence St. Mary cardiac catheterization laboratory are at work and set to finish later this year. Powering clinical excellence with the best technology is crucial, as the hospital and cath lab serve not just Walla Walla, but patients from eight counties. It’s where Providence St. Mary volunteer Mary Sword experienced care firsthand in 2024.

When Mary began having chest pains, she went straight to the emergency department. “They could tell by the bloodwork that I'd had a small heart attack. I was 99% blocked in my left aorta, so they cleaned it out and put two stents in,” she said. “I spent one night in the ICU and went home the next day. It was like, ‘Ooh, I feel so much better; let's get out of here. I have things to do!’”

Mary was back to volunteering at the Providence St. Mary gift shop within a matter of days.

“I was impressed at how easy it was, and with the professionalism of the people,” Mary added. “It's just an amazing place, and I’m so glad we don't have to go to the Tri-Cities or Spokane.”

Donor support provides access to latest technology

Donors contributed a collective $1 million to reinvest in our cath lab. Providence paid the remainder of construction costs. Caregivers and patients will benefit from the updated facility for heart and vascular-related care, including advancements in evaluating heart disease and heart muscle function, repairing congenital defects and performing procedures that improve blood flow.

Mary was also previously treated at Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center and knows the importance of ensuring exceptional care in our community.

“From the improved cath lab to cardiac rehab, even the cafeteria, everyone just goes above and beyond,” Mary said.

192 individuals and local businesses donated a collective $1 million to upgrade the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

589 people facing socioeconomic disparities were assisted by Providence St. Mary community health workers.

88 local businesses generously contributed to Providence St. Mary Foundation events and provided program support.
