PATIENT WELLNESS

Patients find hope, healing with your gifts A healing retreat offers fellowship and wellness to people affected by cancer – and your generosity meant local patients could attend. Cancer survivors Andrea and Robin are navigating survivorship and valued the chance to connect with others.

“I read the Harmony Hill brochure and thought, ‘That sounds really cool,’ but wasn’t sure if I could fit it in,” said Andrea. “Then my nurse navigator offered the retreat to me (at no cost), and I take those things as God’s love, so I made it work, and I’m thankful to the donors.” Andrea has survived cancer twice, most recently a tumor in her nose.

Robin’s invasive breast cancer was caught through her yearly mammogram. Because of your donations, both women spent a weekend in Union, Washington, with others affected by cancer.

“They opened their hearts to us,” said Robin. ‘We talked about all the cancer things plus what else is going on in life.” For Robin, this included the sudden death of her husband shortly after her treatment concluded.

Donor support creates human connection for those affected by a cancer diagnosis Thanks to you, Harmony Hill attendees shared time painting, drawing, sewing, journaling, playing board games, exploring the grounds and connecting with fellow guests.

Andrea, Robin and others arrived as strangers but left as friends.

“A fair share of guests didn’t have support at home – no friends to speak of because nobody wants to hang out with a cancer patient,” said Andrea. “It was a chance for them to do something with friends.”

“I loved it,” said Robin. “If we hadn’t gone, I wouldn’t have known this wonderful experience.

240 Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center patients who experienced cancer-related hair loss received hairpieces at no cost.

78 high school students attended a week-long introduction to medical fields at Kadlec to promote tomorrow’s health care jobs.

162 people contributed 3,501 volunteer hours in service to the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center and Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation events.

Donors keep delicate surgery close to home Generous gifts mean surgeries on aggressive brain tumors can be performed right here at Kadlec, keeping patients near their local support systems.

Donor investments in a StealthStation S8 surgical navigation system provided the equipment needed for brain surgery to be performed to the highest standard of care. Thanks to direct donations and gifts made at our Autumn Affair fundraising gala, Kadlec purchased the $415,000 technology. The Stealth combines advanced imaging with tracking software to successfully conduct surgery on one of the most sensitive parts of the body: the brain.

Because of you, Kadlec’s fellowship-trained neurosurgeon Andrew Bieber, D.O., can use the new stealth to remove glioblastomas, the most common type of cancerous brain tumor in adults.

How a surgical navigation system works for brain surgery Before neurosurgery – often to remove a brain tumor or stop a deep brain bleed – patients undergo a CT scan or MRI, resulting in a detailed 3D map of the patient’s anatomy. Surgeons align these highresolution images with the patient’s body during an operation, creating a meticulous virtual road map.

During a procedure, the StealthStation navigation system tracks surgical instruments in real time alongside the 3D images from a CT scan or MRI, like a GPS. Viewing an instrument’s exact position allows for precise guidance and preserves nearby tissue.

Patients with aggressive cancer treated locally at Kadlec Experts in hematology and oncology at the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center work directly with Dr. Bieber to diagnosis and treat glioblastomas, which are usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. These patients have already received a life-changing diagnosis with limited treatment options. Because of your gifts, they can stay close to their local support systems for this delicate surgery. This often helps them recover faster and results in better long-term outcomes – which may mean precious more time with loved ones.

12 pieces of new equipment were acquired for Kadlec, its clinics and the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center, enhancing quality of care.

944 books were donated to babies discharged from Kadlec’s Level III NICU, supporting family bonding and early literacy.

82 students studying health care at Columbia Basin College or Washington State UniversityTri-Cities received scholarships.

Advanced mammography debuts with your gifts Donors provided the full cost of contrast-enhanced mammography at Kadlec, a cancer-detecting technology available locally for the first time.

Because of your philanthropy, Kadlec is now one of the few hospitals in the Pacific Northwest to offer contrast-enhanced mammography. You brought this unique technology to our community – to the direct benefit of our patients.

The new procedure is quite simple but provides significant results.

Using an IV, a patient receives a contrast injection followed by a mammogram. The iodine dye highlights potential new blood vessels that form when breast cancer grows, letting physicians quickly rule out benign masses or more clearly see cancerous lesions. The process is safe, noninvasive and takes just a few minutes.

Technology creates new view in once-challenging breast scans

Contrast-Enhanced Mammogram

Contrast-enhanced mammography is especially useful in patients with dense breasts – about half of all women. The higher the density, the greater the risk of cancer. Dense tissue appears white on a mammogram, like the image seen above on the left. This opaque view can prevent physicians from spotting potential cancer lurking within tissue, especially small tumors.

Now, because of you, patients can get a referral for a mammogram enhanced with contrast solution and potentially rule out cancer. Currently, it’s used as a diagnostic tool, meaning patients must first be screened with a traditional mammogram. If an abnormality is spotted, it can be further examined with contrast-enhancement, often done more quickly and at a lower cost to patients versus waiting for an MRI, the previous standard of care. Early cancer detection often leads to increased survival rates.

Many events held in coordination with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including Speck Family Motors’ Drive for a Cure, helped with the $150,000 investment in this new system.

Your support of education drives local jobs Gifts empower students and caregivers to pursue vital health care careers through education and hands-on opportunities.

You’re helping meet the demand for health care professionals by supporting a range of efforts that bring people closer to careers in medicine or build on current skills. Investments made toward scholarships benefited hundreds of local students in our community in 2025.

This included an expansion of Experience Healthcare, a summer camp that introduces high school students to the vast diversity of health care careers. Additionally Kadlec’s work-based learning program gives high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to gain insight into health care careers within a hospital setting.

Your gifts also awarded scholarships totaling more than $120,000 to students at Columbia Basin College and Washington State University Tri-Cities pursuing degrees in health care fields.

Finally, donor support allowed two Kadlec caregivers to expand their clinical skill set, completing a respiratory therapy program in 2025 and returning to work in our community. With your philanthropy, more opportunities are planned for 2026 that expand beyond the classroom to introduce today’s youth to exciting health care careers of tomorrow.
