CONNECTIONS

PROVIDENCE FAMILIES GATHERED IN THE ACTIVITY CENTER TO CHEER EACH OTHER ON DURING PROVIDENCE RACERS!

From the Senior Pastor

I realize that it’s only May, but I want to tell you about something fun that’s going to happen in July so you can start looking forward to it now.

We like to talk about Providence as a church that values relationships – and it’s true: We do. In a fractured and polarized world, it’s a gift to belong to a faith community built upon Jesus Christ, who has broken down the walls that once divided us so that we might live together in peace (Ephesians 2:14).

Look around on any given Sunday or Wednesday at Providence – at this month’s Anniversary Sunday celebration, for example – and you’ll see people of all ages together, in the same place, at the same time. That just doesn’t happen anywhere else these days. At least, not often –and certainly not intentionally.

I love the fact that, at our church, multiple generations mix and mingle. I love the fact that, at our church, multiple generations serve

together, sing together, worship together, and laugh together. I love the fact that, at our church, seniors, empty-nesters, young families, students, and children are not complete and total strangers to one another. We are always better when we are together.

And so, with this in mind, we’re creating some time and space in July for our intergenerational faith community to be together. Each Sunday morning during the month of July, we’re planning to offer breakfast in the Fellowship Hall during the Faith Formation hour. To help with the cost of the meal, we’re suggesting a donation of $5 per person. (Some adult classes may choose to continue meeting during July; preschool, children, and student classes will not meet during July.) Worship will still begin at 10:30am, and Extended Care will be available for preschoolers.

With the exception of July 21, when we’ll have our third quarterly church

conference of the year, this summer Sunday time will be program-free, agenda-free, and structure-free. The point of this time is simply for multiple generations of Providence people to be together – in the same place, at the same time – enjoying one another’s company over cups of coffee and plates of bacon, eggs, and grits.

Not only will this intergenerational time together in July bless our collective hearts and souls – it will also be a good gift of Sabbath for our Faith Formation teachers who work so hard throughout the year to help us grow deeper and wider in our knowledge of God’s word, God’s will, and God’s way.

And so: May the peace of Christ be with you – and I’ll look forward to seeing you at breakfast in July!
