WITH CHRIST AT THE CENTER JANUARY 2025
CONNECTIONS
OUR STUDENT MINISTRY HAD A BLAST THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH SEVERAL SPECIAL EVENTS! HERE'S A LOOK AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY. MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO JOIN US IN 2025 FOR FAITH FORMATION, MIDWEEK, AND SPECIAL TRIPS AND EVENTS!

From the Senior Pastor
Martha Haigler retired on New Year’s Eve after 24 years on staff at Providence. Most of her time here was spent providing and coordinating pastoral care for church members. She set a high standard for keeping up with Providence people who were in the hospital, or in grief, or in crisis, or in need of special attention—and, in so doing, she helped the ministers, deacons, and Visitation Team do their respective jobs better. We are so grateful for her ministry here at Providence!
As of New Year’s Day, Dyanna Blackwell is now the point person for coordinating pastoral care at Providence. Many of you already know Dyanna. She has been on our church staff in administrative support roles since June of 2021, and has been a talented, cheerful, and effective team member. She will do well with her new responsibilities, which also include providing administrative support for our lay leadership structure.
Keeping up with pastoral care needs at Providence, though, really can’t be a one-person job. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a
whole congregation to provide good pastoral care. What I mean by this is: We cannot respond to needs that we don’t know about.
Hospitals no longer call churches to let them know about members who are patients. Consequently, the only way that Dyanna—or any of the ministers at Providence—can know that you, or a loved one, or a friend, or someone in your Faith Formation class, is in the hospital is for you to share that news with us. In other words, if you want us to know it, then you’ve got to tell us. I cannot emphasize this fact too strongly.
With this in mind, then, here are several specific ways that you can help Dyanna get off to a strong start:
First, get familiar with her email, dblackwell@providencebc.org, and her phone number here at the church, which is (704) 366-4030x110. During work hours, this should be where you go first to communicate a pastoral care need.
Second, you can keep the Pastoral Care On-Call number handy, which is (704) 366-4030x147. This number will take you directly to the minister on-call for the week, 24 hours a day.
Third, if your Faith Formations class sends weekly updates either via email or social media, then please add Dyanna to the list of recipients.
Fourth, assume that we don’t know about the pastoral care need that you think we should know about— and then take the appropriate steps to share with the church whatever it is that you think we should know.
Fifth, extend grace. Seems like it should be a given for followers of Jesus, but that’s not always the case—especially when people feel let-down and disappointed by the pastoral care that they didn’t receive. I get it. I’d likely feel the same way. Instead of getting angry, though, I’m that asking you to help us do better.
Together, we can, as the apostle Paul urges us in Galatians 6:2, “bear one another’s burdens”—but only if we communicate well with one another. That’s where good pastoral care has to begin.
May the peace of Christ be with you in the new year!
