From the Senior Pastor
At its January meeting, the Church Council adopted a Vision of Ministry statement for 2025. It’s a product of conversations that I’ve had with the Church Council and ministry staff. It’s also been presented for comment and input to our committees, ministry groups, and the congregation.
As part of Providence’s new structure for lay leadership and governance, this annual Vision of Ministry statement is designed to help us all pull in the same direction so that our work together in Jesus’ name can be effective, collaborative, and responsive to the Holy Spirit’s leadership.
That all sounds great—but what, you might ask, is a Vision of Ministry statement?
Good question. It’s certainly something new for us. The Christgiven mission of the church is to represent him faithfully in word and action so that others may come to know him through us—and, to help us fulfill this mission, Providence emphasizes five priorities: To cultivate generosity, make disciples, engage Cotswold, bless Charlotte, and send apostles.
While our mission and priorities don’t change, each new year inevitably brings new challenges and new opportunities. With these challenges and opportunities in mind, then, a Vision of Ministry
statement says: Given where we are and who we are right now as a church, here’s how we believe God wants us to work together this year. So, what does this mean for us in 2025? Well, for starters, it means that we want to complete our Ministry Staff by calling a new Minister with Students and their Families, a process that is underway with a search committee at work.
Other goals for 2025?
· Because Jesus commands us to share his gospel with all people, we will work together to promote a culture of invitation at Providence that is outward-facing and welcoming. Our goal is to become excited about—and comfortable with—introducing others to Providence as a community of faith where they can either meet Jesus for the first time or grow in their ongoing relationship with him.
· Because God has blessed us with resources to fund our missions and ministries, we will work together to cultivate financial vitality by encouraging generous congregational giving, ensuring that our endowment resources are used effectively, evaluating our revenue-generating ministries, and finding suitable tenants for rentable campus space. Our goal is to make our resources more available and accessible for supporting the work that God has called us to do.
· Because we want it to be easier for newcomers and tenured members alike to make good friends and to find good places to use their spiritual gifts at Providence, we will work together to build strong relationships within our church. Our goal is to become a congregation where all members feel like they're part of a community of faith that welcomes them, cares for them, and encourages them.
· Because we want all members of Providence to develop a more fruitful relationship with Jesus, we will work together to place spiritual formation at the center of our worship, learning, and mission ministries. Our goal is to become a church where followers of Jesus are moved to apply God’s Word to their everyday lives in ways that deepen their discipleship and bear witness to God’s generous love for all people everywhere.
Our Vision of Ministry for 2025 is ambitious, but so is God—and so, with God’s help, let us be faithful in all that we do together this year, so that God’s kingdom will be furthered through the ministry of Providence Baptist Church. May the peace of Christ be with you!
