ON THE COVER: Providence caregivers are all smiles about a brand new, donor-funded PET-CT scanner

Dear Friends:

You hold in your hand evidence of a community that cares. Evidence of the incredible power of philanthropy and how it can ease every health journey—from the worry of a new diagnosis to the joy of a new baby. This edition of Inspire magazine gives just a glimpse into how your support of Providence General Foundation touches so many local lives.

Collectively you gave more than $6 million last year to advance exceptional care here at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. I am so grateful. In this edition of Inspire magazine, we’re thrilled to share with you how these gifts are already advancing care, enhancing lives and bringing compassion and comfort to people going through their most vulnerable time. As you page through, I hope you feel proud of what you’ve helped accomplish.

I’m excited for you to read about new cancer equipment here at Providence Everett. It’s the most advanced technology of its kind from Snohomish County all the way up to the Canadian border, and it was funded entirely through philanthropy. That equipment is at work today because of donors—current and past—who’ve faithfully invested in the health and well-being of our community. This new technology

wait times so patients with cancer can get moving on treatment plans without long delays.

On page six you’ll meet a retired Providence caregiver who spent her whole career helping others and has and had the privilege of introducing her to the simple but profound act of giving. See how that seed has blossomed into a beautiful legacy and the joy it brings to her.

Pam is just one of hundreds of people, businesses and organizations you’ll see in this magazine who give to Providence General Foundation. Their reasons for giving vary. Some give in memory or honor of a loved one or a caregiver who made a difference for them. Some sponsor a fundraising event or serve as a board member, helping connect others to Providence Everett’s work and Mission. Some have left Providence General Foundation in their will so their impact can continue even after they’re no longer with us. Each and every name you see, each and every story you read, is a building block to a better, healthier future right here in our community.

Enjoy this celebration of generosity, impact and legacy. And thank you for continuing to inspire me.

Fondly,

Generosity in action

Donors bring advanced imaging technology to Providence

At Providence Everett, patients are now stepping into a future where leading-edge technology meets compassionate care— all thanks to the incredible generosity of local donors.

A new PET-CT scanner that went online in January was fully funded by support through Providence General Foundation. It replaces equipment that had been in use at the cancer center

Will Wisbeck, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, says using the new PET-CT is like switching from a black-and-white TV

“This new technology is a gamechanger,” said Dr. Wisbeck. “The enhanced sensitivity provides higher resolution, which allows us to detect cancerous tumors earlier, when they are smaller and more treatable.”

A PET-CT scanner is a highly sophisticated medical imaging device used primarily to detect cancer. It combines two technologies: positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). With the PET scan, patients are given a special form of glucose — like a glow-in-the-dark sugar — that cancer cells absorb and then

emit signals that highlight these cells in imaging. Then, the CT scan takes a series of X-ray images from different angles around the body and provides a detailed cross-sectional view of the internal structures, showing the size, shape and location of organs and tissues. When these two sets of images are combined, they create a detailed way for doctors to see exactly where cancer is located and where it has spread.

This advanced equipment also works more quickly. What takes only eight, which means more patients can get scanned each day, reducing wait times. And, the machine has a larger opening, which creates a more comfortable experience.

Patty DeGroodt was one of new technology. “It was much quicker; at least a half-hour faster than scanners I’ve been in. I didn’t have to hold my arms over my head, so it was more comfortable,” Patty shares.

Patty isn’t just a patient; she’s also a longtime donor to Providence General Foundation, a former Providence employee and a true believer in Providence’s Mission. “I helped

build that facility, and it’s so gratifying to see us keeping up with technology and giving them the tools to do the job.” she said.

A new CT-simulator is set to arrive this spring. It was also

specialized scanner is a crucial player in radiation therapy, creating intricate 3D images of a patient’s anatomy. It provides a detailed map of the body and allows doctors to precisely target cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

The PET-CT scanner, along with structural and technical upgrades, cost more than $3.8 million while the CT simulator

this would have been possible without the steadfast support of our community.

“We just can’t thank our generous donors enough,” says Tina Gilson, Providence General Foundation.

“This is another example of how ongoing donor support of Providence Everett is directly helping local patients.”

“This new technology is a game changer,” said Dr. Wisbeck. “I’m grateful to this community for bringing this new technology here.”

Retired caregiver plans legacy to “let Providence do something amazing”

Pam Cassidy spent 45 years working in clinical laboratories, dedicating her life to improving the health of others. Now retired, Pam remains committed to making a difference and has decided to list Providence as retirement assets. She wants to continue to touch lives long after she’s hung up her lab coat.

Pam’s philanthropic journey with Providence Everett began at a new employee orientation that introduced her to giving through Providence General Foundation.

“When I walked in the door, the entire culture of Providence seduced me,” Pam recalls. Having never donated to any workplace program before, she was moved to sign up that very

day, pledging “an hour for the tower”—giving one hour of her salary each paycheck toward the campaign to build what’s now known as the Cymbaluk Medical Tower on Providence Everett’s Colby Campus.

This initial act of giving sparked a newfound passion in Pam. “I had never considered that such a small amount, just one hour of

pay every two weeks, could have such a big impact,” she says.

“It made me feel like I really was part of building that tower.”

After working at Providence for only three years, Pamela left

connected to its Mission and the role she wanted to play in savings, she thought, “What good will come of money that I years old? What do I want to do with that money?” For Pam, the answer was clear: She wanted her hard-earned savings to have meaning beyond her own life.

Legacy Society

Pam spent a week hiking in Zion National Park in Utah. This adventure reinforced a vital lesson for her: “I have learned at matters is your health. So, if you have the means to support people’s health, you should do it.”

On that hike, she decided that she wanted to leave a provision in her will to Providence.

Pam’s philanthropic journey was fueled by a frugal lifestyle, the choice not to have children and diligent investing. “I own a

“I’m not wealthy.” Yet, her careful

planning allowed her to amass over half a million dollars in her IRA to donate to Providence after her lifetime. “It’s enough money that I know it will make

Through her generosity, Pam Cassidy ensures that her legacy of caring and giving will continue to improve health and well-being for countless others.

“I know it’s a big enough chunk of money to let Providence do something amazing,” Pam says. “I know it will be used to make lives better for people, and that feels good.”

The Legacy Society was created as a way for Providence General Foundation to recognize and thank donors who have made provisions for Providence in their estate plans. The society allows us to celebrate and honor valued supporters today for a gift that is postponed until after their lifetimes. Art therapy eases cancer journeys

Holding her newborn daughter

Katchka gazed into the tiny face she feared she might never see grow up. During Angel’s pregnancy, she was diagnosed with a rare lymphatic cancer. Shortly after giving birth, Angel endured a grueling treatment regimen that left her nauseous, bald and exhausted—but alive. She beat cancer and raised that baby girl.

As COVID-19 changed the world, cancer came calling again. This time it was breast cancer. Angel signed up for radiation, chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. She added one more thing to her healing arsenal this goaround: art therapy, a free, donor-supported program at Providence Everett for patients and families touched by cancer.

because it didn’t feel like real therapy. We’re painting and Angel said. Yet somewhere under all the craft supplies, Angel began to recover from fear and pain that spanned four decades. “I was healing parts of me that I didn’t even know were broken,” she said.

“We meet people where they are,” said Susie Wind, a licensed mental health counselor who leads the art therapy group. “We’re dealing with a wide range of people in different places in their cancer journey.”

Annabelle Zastrow, a fellow breast cancer survivor and friend of Angel, also attends the therapy group. “Cancer renders one powerless, even hopeless. Creating art is expressive and healing,” said Annabelle. “Susie leads us through meditation, breathing and visualization. She incorporates the theme of making beauty from ashes.”

Susie says chronic illness, pain and facing one’s mortality can bring up previous trauma and

Even though many who attend art therapy are going through a dark time, most of the pieces that are created are playful and bright. Susie notes that facing pain and acknowledging

Art therapy differs from an art class. It’s not about learning how to paint or draw. It’s about using visual metaphors to process emotions and seek beauty. Susie reminds those in the group that “cancer can’t take away the best parts of you. It can’t take your soul, essence or your divinity.”

It’s also about a community of people with a common experience expressing their own unique perspective on it.

“The camaraderie, laughter and praise for each other’s creativity that we share with each other is very healing and supportive,” said Annabelle.

Angel and Annabelle are currently cancer free. Not all in their class are as fortunate, but many come back to class week after week.

“I’m so appreciative of the donors who support this program. There is strength, healing and understanding that happens here.”

2024 Festival Recap

The 39th annual Festival of Trees was a thrilling success, raising more than $1.44 million for children’s services at Providence Everett.

At this year’s free Community Day & Teddy Bear Celebration at the Tulalip Resort Casino, hundreds of visitors marveled at the masterpieces of trees and wreaths created by talented, local designers. Optum Care Washington sponsored Community Day, which featured cookies and cocoa, photos with local entertainer Tim Noah. Furry friends sold at Providence General Children’s Association’s children in our community.

The Festival of Trees Holiday Gala was a magical evening, chaired by Tim Halladay and

evening’s Fund-a-Need segment.

The gala opened with the annual Spirit of Festival award presented to Stadium Flowers, which donated beautiful table centerpieces. Stadium has been a dedicated supporter of Festival of Trees—and many other local community events—over the years.

As the night rolled on, bidders battled it out for creative and exciting items, such as a tour of the

Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale and, of course, beautifully and creatively decorated trees and wreaths. One of the trees raised more than

The Fund-a-Need part of the evening topped what was already a night of generosity, raising more to advance maternity and newborn services at Providence Everett.

Thank you to all the guests, sponsors, designers and volunteers who truly made this year’s Festival of Trees an event to remember. Your generosity means the world to us and to the children and families we gathered to honor with your gifts.

Thank you to all the guests, volunteers and sponsors who helped make the 2024 Festival of Trees events a gift for families who rely on Children’s Services at Providence Everett.
