Dear Friend: As we enter this season of giving thanks, I am filled with gratitude for this community. This issue of inspire magazine celebrates our generous community—and all the unique and creative ways you pitch in to advance health care and spread compassion here at Providence Everett.

In the special Campaign Celebration section, we recognize those who are the rocket fuel behind recent advancements and innovation at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Read about the many things made possible through the people who joined this historic $32-million initiative: more patient rooms, new and upgraded technology to heal hearts and kill cancer, enhanced trauma services, and equipment and expanded programs that give local babies and children the best possible start in life.

When we started the Campaign for a Greater Providence back in 2018, we had no idea of the challenges ahead.

But even a global pandemic was no match for a community that cares so much. The fingerprints of philanthropy are all over this place, and I am sincerely grateful for you and your investments in the health of our families, friends, and neighbors.

In this issue, you’ll see how local businesses and groups golfed, cooked, pitched, and rowed to raise money for their hometown hospital this summer. And you’ll meet a pair of grocery store managers who found a way to make a difference that has now surpassed seven figures in philanthropic giving! Each of these “average people” are utilizing their talents, interests, and social circles to contribute to Providence’s vision of health for a better world.

Speaking of celebrating generosity, we’ve unveiled the Providence General Foundation Lifetime Giving Wall at Providence’s Colby Campus. It’s a digital display installed next to the D Wing elevators. Names of our Friends of Providence, Corporate Giving Partners, and Legacy Society members are featured among inspirational quotes, testimonials from grateful patients, videos of some of our most generous donors, and information about how philanthropy plays a key role in medical excellence at Providence Everett. Check it out the next time you’re visiting the hospital.

Looking ahead, I’m excited for this year’s Festival of Trees, which kicks off the holiday season and raises money for Children’s Services at Providence Everett. See page 8 for more information about this year’s Festival.

Health care across the country, and here at home, still faces challenges and changes. But, because of you, I am hopeful. Again and again, as the need continues to rise, so does your generosity. You are elevating and supporting excellence and access to care—for all.

Phenomenal Fundraising Grocery store managers help raise more than $1 million for breast cancer patients

A

s grocery store managers, Rob Jones and Craig Christie make sure their store shelves stay stocked, the checkout lines aren’t too long, and that you’re able to get what you need to feed your family. It’s important work. But beyond the walls of their stores, these two are also—quite literally—saving local lives. They’ve helped raise more than a million dollars for patients at Providence’s Comprehensive Breast Center.

Just average guys

“None of this would be possible without the support of our Seattle Division Safeways and Albertsons,” says Rob. “They really empower their store teams to do the things in their communities that show we’re neighbors—and that means you give back, and you help.”

“We’re just average guys doing good things for a great cause,” said Craig.

These “average guys” got involved with fundraising for Providence a dozen years ago when the Everett Silvertips started Pink the Rink, a hockey game in October (breast cancer awareness month) that raises funds for Providence’s Comprehensive Breast Center. Rob and Craig are big hockey fans, and they’d worked together on small fundraisers before. They decided to see if they could get their Safeway stores involved.

“It seemed like a great event, so we picked up the phone and cold called the ‘Tips office and said ‘Hey, we’re with Safeway, and what can we do to help drive ticket sales or support the event?’ A couple meetings later, the ‘Tips were on board and it just took off from there,” remembers Rob.

Rob and Craig dreamed up ways to involve their customers, vendors, neighbors, and friends. They organized an annual golf tournament that grows every year, set out change jars at store cash registers, and promoted the Pink the Rink hockey game to customers and friends. Their corporate leaders encouraged them to be involved in the communities that their stores serve.

Friendship and fun Rob and Craig first met as young store clerks nearly 40 years ago.

They made a great team back then, and they still do now. Rob is the hard-driving idea guy, while Craig’s self-appointed job is to pump the brakes when necessary.

“Once he floated the idea of putting people in grocery carts and sending them down the ice at hockey night,” remembers Craig. “I’d say ‘what could possibly go wrong?!’ We have a fantastic relationship, and it’s my pleasure to work with such a great friend.”

They’ve had a lot of laughs and made good memories over the years, but Pink the Rink brings out their soft and serious side, too. Seeing breast cancer survivors being honored on the ice before the game puts things into perspective.

What it’s all about “The cancer word is super scary,” says Rob. “If we can help one family put that fear aside and go through their journey with hope and positivity, then it’s all worth it.”

Funds from the annual Pink the Rink event helped upgrade medical equipment at the Breast Center and provided mammograms, other diagnostic screenings, and educational resources to patients— regardless of their ability to pay. As a result, cancers have been caught early and families have stayed together.

Craig recently moved to a different grocery chain, but he and Rob continue to partner on Pink the Rink fundraising. There’s still work to do.

“It feels good, but it is never enough,” says Craig. “My hope is that research and education will eliminate breast cancer.”

Even amidst their busy lives and careers, these average guys have managed to motivate their community and partners to make an incredible difference for local patients. To that we say: Thanks a million!

“It’s all about hope, little victories, big victories— and keeping families together,” says Rob.

From Surviving to Thriving Providence Children’s Center gives family tools to succeed

S

even years ago, Signe Tapert was feeling like she was a bad mom.

“I was honestly kind of drowning,” Signe said.

“I felt like the worst mom ever, but I was trying my best.”

Her 3-year-old son, Anakin, had outbursts at day care.

Private speech therapy wasn’t helping his language skills. And nothing she tried could tame his frequent temper tantrums.

Signe knew her family needed help, and with a referral from her son’s pediatrician, Providence’s Children’s Center became their sanctuary.

At the Center, Signe watched Anakin with other children as he began occupational therapy and got help with socialization and classroom behavior. It was the first time she realized that her son might be on the autism spectrum.

“I think if we hadn’t gone to the Children’s Center, I wouldn’t have put the pieces together,” Signe said. “It all feels so foreign until you’re given the education and tools to recognize what your child is going through. I had been trying so hard to rationalize that he just needed more time, or that I wasn’t doing things right.”

The journey to a diagnosis When Anakin was first referred to the Center, the wait for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis appointment was years long, and many services and therapies were out of reach without an official diagnosis.

In the midst of advocating for care for her son with the available programs at the Center, Signe began noticing that her younger daughter, Averi, was slow to respond to her name and seemed to have speech delays. At her first-year wellness check, Averi was referred to the Center, too, and was added to the waiting list for an evaluation and began an early intervention program.

The calls they’d been waiting for After more than two years of waiting, Anakin reached the top of the wait list for an autism evaluation.

“It was all the emotions I’d been dealing with over the years all over again,” Signe said about receiving the diagnosis for her son.

“By that point, I had recognized his autism, but to hear the doc say ‘I see autism,’ it made it so much more real. It was peace, and heartbreak, and heartwarming all at the same time.”

With a diagnosis, Anakin was eligible to start behavior therapy at the Providence Boyden Family Autism Center and get an individual development plan (IDP) though his school district to unlock tailored educational services — including in-person learning, speech therapy, a para-aide, food therapy, and more during the pandemic.

A few months after Anakin’s diagnosis, Averi also received her diagnosis and was able to enroll in additional therapies and services at the Autism Center.

The difference of early diagnosis In 2021, donors funded a major expansion of the Autism Center, nearly tripling its ability to serve families and drastically reducing wait times for autism diagnosis appointments. For the Tapert family, this opened up resources for both of their children.

“Averi didn’t miss out on all the programs Anakin missed out on while waiting for an evaluation. It was huge for her,” Signe said.

“We saw huge leaps and bounds developmentally, socially, and verbally with Averi. She’s always been thriving, and for so long Anakin was just surviving because we didn’t know what we were doing, but he’s thriving now, too.”

Set up for success Signe is incredibly grateful for everything the Autism Center has provided her family, even with the wait time for Anakin.

“They took it seriously to get our kids the help they needed, and they truly wanted to see our kids and our family succeed.”

Signe said. It’s changed these children and their lives.”

Today, Signe says both of her children are thriving in school and life. They’re enjoying everyday childhood milestones, like playing on a soccer team, attending school, and going on field trips without major meltdowns.

Signe no longer feels like she’s a bad mom, and she has a message to all who have supported the Providence Boyden Family Autism Center:

“Thank you for giving my children the gift of living in a world where they can function.

I know they will get married, have jobs, and be able to advocate for themselves in society.

We couldn’t have asked for more.”

Pink at the Park

PNW Pink Ribbon Row

Pink at the Park was a home run again this year! Players and fans donned their pink and had a ball at Funko Field. Thank you to the Everett AquaSox and everyone who came out to the game to support patient care at Providence Everett’s Comprehensive Breast Center!

Hundreds of rowers got up before the sun on a September Sunday to do their part to leave breast cancer in our wake. Rowing clubs from all over Puget Sound hit the water on Lake Union for the PNW Pink Ribbon Row. Providence Everett’s Comprehensive Breast Center is one of the beneficiaries of this fundraising regatta, and we are thrilled about this partnership.

IRG Golf Tournament It was the 6th year of the IRG Physical & Hand Therapy Charity Golf Tournament, and it keeps getting better with age! Providence General Foundation is grateful to be a recipient of the proceeds from this fun and upbeat day.

Everett Golf & Country Club Cancer Tournament

Dine Out Day for Little Amigos

The annual Everett Golf & Country Club Cancer Tournament did it again. They got golfers out onto the beautiful course in early June and helped provide critical financial assistance for patients and families receiving cancer treatment at Providence Everett. We so appreciate the nearly 50 years of incredible support.

Muchas Gracias—with guacamole on top—to the team at Viva Jalisco Mexican Restaurant in Bothell for donating an entire day of proceeds to Children’s Services at Providence! Lunch, dinner, drinks—all of it was for the programs that support our babies and children. What a delicious way to make a difference for the little amigos at Providence Everett.

Wheels on the Waterfront The weather was almost as amazing as the classic cars, trucks, and bikes at the 2023 Wheels on the Waterfront charity car show. The annual summer event benefits Providence Regional Cancer Partnership and the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. Shout out to the many volunteers, participants, and attendees who make this such an enjoyable and successful event.

A Syllabus for Retirement Success 4 Retirement Lessons from a 45-Year Career Educator Carol Whitehead is proud of her career in education. It led her to serve as a Superintendent and administrator for school districts throughout the state, including Everett, Bremerton, and Tacoma. As she’s transitioned from her career of service to retirement, she’s grateful she invested in her retirement years early on. She learned a few things along the way to share with others.

Save early, even if it’s only a small amount

When Carol first started as an educator, her employer offered a tax sheltered annuity as part of her salary.

“When you’re young, you don’t really think you may need this money later,” Carol says. “And you don’t even miss the $5-10 a month. Over time, you’ve got a nice little nest egg.”

It doesn’t take much to make an impact in your community

to lower taxes. I donate because I care about the organizations I support. But the distributions help with both of those things.”

A great medical center is a worthy investment

Carol feels fortunate she can continue to support causes close to her heart, including regularly donating to Providence General Foundation, and serving on Providence’s Community Mission Board.

Carol has taken the same “start small” approach to giving to causes that are meaningful to her.

“If you don’t have a lot of money to give, just give a little bit, and all of that accumulates over time into something bigger,” Carol says.

Talk to your financial advisor about your charitable giving

Carol says if you have a financial advisor, and they haven’t mentioned a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) — ask them about it before you turn 70, so you can learn and plan for it.

“I didn’t really think about it until the time came, and I needed to do it,” Carol says. “I don’t make donations

“I imagine most of us, before our life is over, will need Providence Everett or have a loved one who will need it,” Carol says. “It’s important we all work together to make sure we keep our hospital and medical care top quality — and the Foundation does that for us.

Make a Tax-free Charitable Distribution from an IRA A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a wonderful way to save money at tax time and further the mission and work of your favorite charity, such as Providence General Foundation.

When making a QCD from an IRA, it is important to know the following:

Gifts must be from a traditional or inherited IRA only — not an employersponsored IRA (simple IRA or SEP).

Contact your IRA administrator and provide them with the following information:

Welcome to the Board!

We are pleased to announce three new additions to Providence General Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Paul Seckinger, with North Sound Emergency Medicine, works as an emergency medicine physician at the Providence Everett Emergency Department and as a faculty member training medical residents through Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and SeaMar Community Health Center Family Practice.

Dr. Seckinger attended medical school at Creighton School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.

He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Western Michigan University School of Medicine. He is a member and fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and serves on the board of MercyWatch Medical Outreach, a Snohomish County based nonprofit providing medical, social, and spiritual outreach to marginalized communities.

Dr. Seckinger, his wife, Rebecca McNamara, and two daughters live in North Everett and are members of Our Lady of Hope parish.

Boe Nelson

Courtney Reece co-owns Arlington-based Reece Construction Company with her husband, Andy. She oversees marketing, events, and charitable giving. Courtney is passionate about caring for other people and supporting families affected by medical and emotional hardships.

Boe Nelson is the Senior Director of Marketing for The Everett Clinic, Optum Washington where he has worked in marketing roles for eight years. He is an advocate and champion for world-class health care in our local community.

She is a leader and advocate for her community, previously volunteering with the Marysville United Methodist Church, the Marysville Community Food Bank, and Everett Gospel Mission Women & Children’s Center. She is also a youth sports coach for the Arlington Boys & Girls Club.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Western Washington University.

When she’s not at work or volunteering, Courtney enjoys her monthly women’s bunco gatherings and spending time with her husband and four children at their Arlington home.

Boe is a graduate of Leadership Snohomish County and active in the Snohomish County Chapter of American Heart Association— as his wife Jenae had a stroke in 2010 at the age of 23. He holds a bachelor’s degree in strategic communications and advertising from Washington State University.

For more than a decade, Boe has been involved with Providence, starting his career as an intern in Providence Everett’s marketing department, and volunteering for Festival of Trees. Boe and Jenae live in North Everett with their three young children, all born at Providence.
