Tutto è partito dalla “cascina rossa” a Castelnuovo di Tante sono state le emozioni, le sensazioni e le immagini mente ha bloccato sono le mani dei contadini. Le mani di ma forte come il suo. Erano mani da mungitore: bastava passata in stalla e nei campi. It all began at the “red farmhouse” in Castelnuovo di Asola (Mantua).

As a child I experienced so many emotions, feelings and images. The clearest and strongest of these, which have stayed with me, are of farmers' hands.

My father's hands, enormous in comparison with a slender but powerful body like his. They were hands made for milking: just seeing them and watching them work made you understand the sacrifice of a life spent in the cowshed

And then the hands of Mandelo, the wanderer and storyteller. I still have a very clear and distinct image of his hands, thickly veined and scarred with age and heavy work. His yellowish nails were neglected and cracked like the soil in a time of drought.

FAUSTO Alpinista, naturalista, fotografo, è tra i primi al mondo a salire tutti gli 8000 iniziando dal K2, che raggiunge nel 1983. Fondatore dell'associazione internazionale “Mountain Wilderness”, di cui è garante internazionale, dedica grande attenzione all'ambiente e alla natura, organizza conferenze e mostre didattiche in scuole e Università.

Da molti anni si dedica completamente alla realizzazione di un progetto umanitario in Nepal realizzando scuole e laboratori professionali per oltre mille bambini e ragazzi.

Mountaineer, naturalist, photographer, Fausto De Stefani was one of the first in the world to ascend all the peaks above 8000 m starting from K2, which he reached in 1983. Founder of the international “Mountain Wilderness” association of which he is currently the international guarantor, Fausto De Stefani has focused much of his attention on the natural environment, organizing conferences and educational exhibitions in schools and universities.

For many years, he has been dedicating his every effort to a humanitarian project in Nepal that is setting up schools and professional training institutes for over a thousand needy children.

Filomena, era di Ischia, stava presso di noi a servizio, per salario e vitto. Qualche sua carezza ruvida, impacciata, fresca di ammollo nel nostro bucato, mi toccava i capelli con l'aggiunta di una benedizione. look at a woman's hands, which to me are like butterflies. I see how they rest. A caress from a woman's hand is the holiest gesture I know. It doesn't matter whether they're dainty or coarse, bejewelled or calloused.

During my childhood, an old woman lived in our house. Filomena was from Ischia and stayed with us as a servant, for wages, board and lodging. Her rough, clumsy caresses, hands freshly soaked from doing our laundry, used to touch my hair with a special kind of benediction. I know she shielded me, looked after me through difficult moments and mishaps. I know she protected me.

And so I look at a woman's hands.

I haven't been kind to my hands; I've never kept them in pockets or wrapped them in gloves. I've used them, I've sold their capacity to work in exchange for money, they've earned my living. I've raised them to defend myself and to strike blows. I've pushed them to reach handholds as I climb sheer walls. I've rested them on a guitar, the loveliest wood to embrace.

When I use my hands to hold a notebook open on my lap and write in it, they're resting. For my hands and for me, writing is leisure time, as opposed to work. In this way I differ from the time and the hands of writers.

Chi scrive oggi, nemmeno impugna: sfiora coi polpastrelli una tastiera, spolvera più che imprime. Lo schermetto acceso risponde da soldatino, righe impettite sull' attenti, ben allineate. Lo scrittore di tastiera è un sergente, quello su carta è ancora uno scolaro.

Un poeta del 1900, Dylan Thomas, scrive un atto di accusa contro le mani che con una firma cancellano una città, impongono una tassa sul respiro. Infine conclude la sua pagina col verso :" Hands have no tears to flow", le mani non versano lacrime. No, però quelle giuste possono asciugarle.

The twentieth-century poet Dylan Thomas wrote an indictment of the hands that can wipe out a city or impose a tax on breathing with a signature. His poem concludes with the line "Hands have no tears to flow”, and it's true, but tears can be dried by the right hands.

Hands sustain the balance of a curved back, folded in on itself and its solitude. Small hands are already able to sustain effort and responsibility, they know the reason for their usefulness.

A face sinks into hands and hides; hands create a refuge, a shelter, a consolation. Hands speak of days, years, inheritance, traditions, personal stories and destiny.

La nascita, la sopravvivenza, la fatica, la sopportazione, i pensieri, i sentimenti passano nelle mani, nel loro dire e nel loro fare.

Birth, survival, effort, endurance, thoughts and emotions pass through the hands, in what they do and in what they transmit.

Prendono il silenzio e lo portano dentro la loro unione in preghiera.

Leggono la fede sui libri sacri e sui grani di un rosario. Scivolano nella pausa di una meditazione, di un ascolto.

They take silence and bring it between them as they meet in prayer.

Sono mani che attingono e dalle quali si può attingere. Sanno dosare e calibrare un gesto, un'azione o un'intenzione. Pesano e soppesano.

Pestano ed impastano farina, modellano argille, forgiano e battono metalli, intrecciano bambĂš.

Hands make use and hands are made use of. Hands can measure and calibrate a gesture, an action or an intention.

They weigh and calculate. They pound and knead dough, shape clay, forge and beat metal, weave bamboo.

Hands touch the chin or the forehead, leaving a thought, a doubt, a question, an answer and a smile. They are brought to the mouth to suck traces of food from the fingers; jealous and greedy, they hold a fruit to be bitten.

Spesso i miei viaggi si fermano a conoscere le persone e i luoghi.

A coglierne i colori e i suoni, attimi che valgono come esempi e come testimonianze, a incontrare comportamenti, a scoprire ambienti.

My travels often pause to get to know people and places.

To take in their colours and sounds, moments that serve as examples, as evidence; to encounter customs, discover habitats.

La terra ha riempito le rughe e le linee che si accavallano, si intersecano e si diramano. Si direbbe che la natura e la vita vengono toccate, a volte sďŹ orate, a volte a errate.

The earth has filled in the wrinkles and lines that overlap, intersect and branch. It must be that nature and life should be touched - sometimes brushed lightly, sometimes seized.
