Dans l’histoire remarquablement influente du jazz, un nom se démarque comme étant celui d’un talent intemporel et d’une voix exceptionnelle : Ella Fitzgerald. Le jazz est à l’origine un genre musical né de la fusion des traditions africaines et européennes, qui s’est développé au début du XXe siècle aux États-Unis. Ses caractéristiques principales sont l’improvisation et la syncope. Ella Fitzgerald est souvent surnommée la reine du jazz et sa contribution à ce genre musical a transcendé les époques, laissant une empreinte indélébile sur l’essence même du jazz et sur le monde de la musique en général.

Ella Fitzgerald, née en 1917 à Newport News en Virginie, était un prodige de la musique dont la carrière a duré plus de six décennies. Elle a

débuté son parcours dans le jazz pendant l’ère du swing des années 1930, en perfectionnant son art grâce à l’imitation des enregistrements de ses artistes préférés. Elle trouve rapidement sa propre voix, reconnue pour son registre vocal impeccable, son timbre cristallin et sa maîtrise du scat, une forme d’improvisation vocale basée sur des syllabes absurdes. L’impact d’Ella Fitzgerald sur le jazz est immense et son influence dépasse largement les frontières du genre. Reconnue pour sa technique vocale inégalée, Fitzgerald a connu un succès immense et est devenue une figure majeure du scat. Coucou Glendon,

Can you believe we’re already in March? In just over a month, we’ll be wrapping up our courses and worrying about final exams. That may be stressful for some of us — I know it is at times for me with so many assignments left to do — but on the bright side it’s just a little closer to summer and all the beauties it brings. Les jours quand je n’ai aucune envie de travail, je me rappelle que les vacances s’approchent rapidement et si je bosse jusqu’à la fin du trimestre, elles seront bien méritées et d’autant plus agréables. Les nouvelles récentes de la grève du syndicat CUPE 3903 ont peut-être mis un gramme de peur dans vos cœurs. Bien sûr, c’est un vrai casse-tête pour celles et ceux d’entre nous qui sont censé(e)s d’obtenir nos diplômes en juin, mais ce n’est pas la première ni la dernière fois qu’on vit une grève. Nous sommes toutes et tous en un jeu d’attente maintenant, ne perdez pas donc l’espoir — on aura nos diplômes. Honnêtement, on devrait être soulagé qu’on vive dans une société avec la possibilité des manifestations pacifiques.

Pour marquer la fin du février, le Mois de l’histoire des Noirs, Pro Tem voulait vous apporter un numéro spécial centré sur les contributions des Noires et Noirs à notre société canadienne, nord-américaine et mondiale. If you’re looking for a laid-back but educational activity to keep learning about significant Black individuals in recent world history, be sure to go see the Bob Marley movie. I must admit, I didn’t care for reggae when I walked into the theatre but walked out with a newly found and grooving appreciation for the genre. Beyond the beats, you’ll gain insight into Bob Marley’s role as a peace activist in Jamaica. While the movie didn’t get raving critic reviews, it’s a perfect snippet of history to pique your interest.

Prioritizing Well-Being with a Busy Schedule

As university students, we are in a constant whirlwind of assignments, exams, chosen extracurriculars and part-time jobs. Balancing everything can leave little time for self-care; since we typically prioritize our school and work responsibilities, we might come to find ourselves burnt out. Today, we’ll explore effective self-care strategies and ways to balance our busy lives to take care of our mental, emotional and physical health.

Prioritize your sleep and rest.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing published a Harvard article that states that over 50% of college students get less than seven hours of sleep per night.1 This is below the recommended amount of sleep. I, myself, am guilty of staying up until 3 a.m., working on assignments for my classes, falling asleep for 4 hours and having to wake up at 7 a.m. for a 9 a.m. class. As a commuter, I have to wake up a lot earlier than those who live on campus and because of this, I lose sleep. nation, switching my schedule around and building more discipline when it comes to schoolwork. I tend to procrastinate until it’s late at night because I’m tired when I get home from school. It always becomes a race against that 11:59 p.m. deadline. Get your 7-9 hours of sleep and take naps because your body, mind and schoolwork will thank you. If you have trouble sleeping, try to minimize noise and light in your environment and try to do a screen detox as well. Practice techniques to reduce stress and increase mindfulness.

Concordia College points out the importance of stress reduction techniques and practicing mindfulness. Incorporating deep breathing exercises, yoga, meditation or just allocating quiet time for yourself can help reduce stress and increase your mental clarity.2 Taking these short moments to connect with yourself and calm down after a stressful situation or taking breaks between study sessions can help you recharge, allowing you to regain focus and energy for tasks up ahead. I like to journal.

Another technique that I use while studying is Pomodoro — a method where you study for 25 minutes and take a short 5 minutes in between each session. In between my study sessions, I prefer to write down how I am feeling or write down topics I need to work on more with my notes. This helps me take a step back and better approach what I am going to study next. Establish boundaries and say no.

Protect your time and well-being.

Learn to prioritize your commitments and certain responsibilities and don’t fear saying no to friends or family if the activities or tasks given don’t align with your current values or your schedule. Recognize your limits.3 We must create a balance between school and our social lives. It is okay to say yes but it is also okay to say no if you have a big assignment coming up that needs to be finished or you promised you would be somewhere else for an extracurricular. Saying no so that you can have alone time is just as important, if not even more important, than saying no because you have a pending academic task. Spreading yourself thin can lead to burnout and spending a night by yourself can only help you. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a huge aspect. However, for things such as parties or a coffee date with a friend, there will always be other opportunities in the future. Cultivate supportive relationships. It is crucial to surround ourselves with positive influences that will uplift us and encourage us to do well. We should seek out people like family and friends that we can turn to for guidance, advice or emotional support during hard times. Invest time and effort in nurturing friendships and forming meaningful connections with people.4 It’s also important to turn inwards, building a strong and supportive relationship with ourselves. If you allocate quiet time to yourself, that time must be rejuve-

nating and refreshing, meant to build you up, and be a buffer to move on to upcoming tasks.

Take time to practice self-compassion and self-care.

Prioritize self-care as a part of your routine. Take time to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether that is reading a book, playing a relaxing video game or indulging in another hobby.5 My way of keeping self-care in my routine is by recording my day-to-day routine and posting it to YouTube. It personally helps me stay productive while also indulging in one of my favourite hobbies: content creation and digital media. I like incorporating my hobbies into my everyday school routine and growing both academic and personal skills. In my downtime, I read or write, reflect on my day and talk about what’s ahead of me.

Physical Activity.

This is a no-brainer but physical health also improves mental health. Incorporating physical activity has been proven to make you happier, improving functional capacity. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 2.5 hours of exercise each week, which is 20 minutes per day.6 Lately, I’ve been trying to incorporate physical activity by taking at least 8,000 steps a day, just to get my body moving. I know physical activity clears my head and if I have a big assignment coming up, I know that I can use my physical activity time to start fresh and motivate myself to be productive and get some work done.

Ultimately, there are a lot of useful techniques to balance and prioritize your responsibilities. It is important to take time for yourself to set a routine to avoid getting overwhelmed and burnt out. As university students, we are constantly on the move and we need to recognize that breaks are okay.

The culture of American football is changing swiftly. The self-made singer-billionaire, Taylor Swift, has brought a whole new viewership era to this NFL season, consisting of a newer and younger demographic.

Swift’s extraordinary ability to draw out and inspire the new interest of younger women in the NFL should be endorsed and supported, not mocked or belittled. Not only does increasing support

for football bring success to the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs, but it also normalizes female interest in a sport that is aggressively dominated by men. Historically, men’s American football has been a season celebrated and enjoyed primarily by men, with the season brought to its peak at the Superbowl every year. I’m not saying there are no women fans, I’m just saying that before this particular football season, there were significantly fewer women avidly invested in watching football, and fewer willing to learn about it or gain an interest in it.

From Local to Global: Afrobeat on the Rise

West African culture is host to a rhythmic revolution, which echoes around the world. Afrobeat found its roots in the vibrant streets of Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana, evolving from local sounds to a global phenomenon that has left a mark on the international music scene. Lagos, known for its dynamic and vibrant energy, emerged as the heartbeat of Afrobeat. This city is where a fusion of traditional African rhythms combined with Western influences to create a genre that encapsulates the spirit of urban life. Infused with socio-political commentary and unique sound blends, artists such as Fela Kuti helped shape the genre. In Ghana, particularly in Accra, artists E. T. Mensah and Osibisa set the stage for what would become a rhythmic

Kansas City Chiefs playing to a draw and relying mostly on defensive plays. Of course, as Swifties, my mom and I had to cheer for the Chiefs. It was my first time watching a full Super Bowl game, rather than waiting until the next day to watch the halftime show on YouTube. This was, of course, met with the playful rivalry of my hardcore 49er fan family. Overall, I can say that I was thoroughly entertained every second of the game, especially during overtime, and was definitely jumping and cheering when the Chiefs scored that last field goal. Looking back, it’s clear to me that some of the first-half calls went against the 49ers. After watching the game and talking about it with friends, I noticed that a lot of them (myself included) had watched it with their families and it had become a family event! This was fascinating because that meant that those who normally would not bother to watch the Superbowl had actually been watching it because they wanted to cheer for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. This is especially interesting and important when considering how much the NFL benefits from Taylor’s presence and her loyal and global fanbase. What I mean is that, in

The rise of Afrobeat across the globe has been driven by collaborations between artists from different cultures and the emergence of new stars who push the genre’s boundaries. Libianca’s “People” and Tyla’s “Water” further narrate the genre’s adaptability, seamlessly blending with various musical styles and narratives. These tracks not only demonstrate the versatility of the genre but also highlight the potential for growth in popularity. Afrobeat has surpassed the typical expectations for the genre and created a universal language that connects with audiences worldwide.

Collaborations like “Calm Down” by Rema and Selena Gomez pushed for-

previous years, what is usually considered a big night for the men to drink beer and be macho was transformed into something different: full family events, Swiftie viewing parties, fan gatherings, and more. Women attended these events actively learning the rules and enjoying the game just as much as their male counterparts.

We are witnessing an amazing positive shift in NFL fandom, one that the league is endorsing and protecting despite sexist backlash and misogynistic haters. NFL officials told the Hollywood Reporter that they have “leaned into” the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce news, which is a pop culture moment that has intersected sports and entertainment.1 While it is good that the NFL is defending the newfound female interest in football mostly brought on by the Swifties, it is up to us to educate our male friends, brothers, classmates and colleagues.

There must be recognition of a sexist double standard in the media, whereby Travis Kelce’s attendance at Taylor Swift’s concerts is described as being a “supportive boyfriend,” while her presence

ward with Rema’s distinctive sound. They introduced many music enthusiasts to explore the genre of Afrobeat and add a new song or two to their playlists. His impact reaches audiences on a global scale and contributes to the widespread popularity of Afrobeat.

at his NFL football games is labelled a “distraction” or “annoyance” for predominantly male viewers. Unfortunately, this is the case despite Swift only having an average of less than one minute of screen time per game.2 It is essential that we, women, men and non-binary people, condemn and stop hateful, exclusionary, right-wing ideals and sexist comments from flourishing on social media posts that aim to put women down. These unwarranted comments are not only dangerous for women, but also target young men and encourage them to become misogynists like their predecessors who use a hyper-masculine fandom for football as a pretext for their bad behaviour. Anyone who loves football agrees that it is a sport that anyone can and should enjoy, especially if they are dating a player on the team. So, why shouldn’t Swift enjoy the night while supporting her boyfriend in one of the most career-defining moments of his life? And why shouldn’t the Swifties be welcomed or encouraged to watch, learn and enjoy football too?

Another example of a collaboration between cultures is “Hola Senorita” by Maluma, which features GIMS and exemplifies the ability to transcend cultural barriers while producing high calibre bilingual music. The song not only became the perfect way to introduce Afrobeat to Latin audiences but also created a connection between French and Spanish cultures. These international collaborations both showcase versatility and highlight musical languages as potential bridges across cultural differences and linguistic barriers.

Encompassing three million inhabitants and 630 km² of land, and chosen as a destination by over 27.5 million visitors annually, the city of Toronto has plenty of things to do. In addition to the permanent infrastructures, parks and places to see, this extremely dynamic city doesn’t lack special exhibitions, festivals, markets and events either.

However, in the first edition of “Toronto Travel Guide,” it would be wiser to begin with a general overview of what to see and do. This kind of “Toronto Bucket List” can be useful in many situations. For example, it can help you defend the city against widespread pessimism and plan an outing without being overwhelmed by all of the options.

Precisely to avoid overwhelming you with too many ideas, I have selected three free things to do in Toronto (tested and approved!).

If you have already been to all three places, congratulations, you are a great adventurer! If this isn’t the case yet, you know what you could add to your already overbooked agenda; either during the next reading week if you stay around Toronto, or on a weekend between two assignments…

The orchestra’s recent highlight was their Mardi Gras-themed concert at the Rose Theatre. The venue, known for hosting a diverse range of artistic performances, provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of jazz that transported the audience straight to the vibrant streets of New Orleans by handing out masks and necklaces. The musicians, well-versed in the language and knowledge of jazz and its history, brought the spirit of Mardi Gras alive using instruments rooted in the culture of the city. Our status as Glendon students allows us to take advantage of the best part of the University of Toronto: visiting its incredible campus without having to take part in its well-known overly competitive atmosphere. I even tend to consider the St. George Campus as one of the most beautiful places in Toronto. Indeed, each building on this campus is historical and looks like a castle. I highly recommend visiting the inside of the Hart House, which will transport you immediately to Hogwarts without having to take the Hogwarts Express. Essentially, this campus allows you to observe historical and old buildings in the city of Toronto, which is primarily characterized by a modern architectural style.

Riverdale Park and Farm.

As we know all too well, academic duties can be extremely stressful and you may need to take a deep breath of fresh air, without leaving Toronto. If you are in this situation, Riverdale Park could perfectly meet your needs. Although being located very close to Downtown, on the East Side of Toronto, this park promises to change your scenery. I advise you to start by walking in Riverdale Park East, where you will benefit from a magnificent view of the city. Then, cross Riverdale Park Viaduct to reach the other side of the park and head towards the main objective of this walk: Riverdale Farm. Although it may seem ridiculous for adults to visit a working farm, you will thank me later. You will find the most peaceful and relaxing place in all of Toronto, where you can recharge your battery.

We may be surrounded by people, but it seems we’re lacking in real, human interactions. According to a new study, Toronto is ranked one of the loneliest cities in Canada.1

In a world seemingly way more connected than before, it’s paradoxical that feelings of loneliness are becoming more and more common. While much attention is rightly focused on senior loneliness, I am willing to add that young people struggle with this pervasive feeling, despite their hyperconnectivity. Loneliness isn’t an isolated problem; it’s widespread.

moment of learning. The passion of the musicians reignited the joy of jazz in the hearts of all present. Some people were even beginning to dance!

Jazz, with its intricate rhythms and improvisational nature, might not be everyone’s cup of tea. However, attending a B-Jazzed Orchestra performance goes beyond personal musical preferences. It’s an opportunity to delve into understanding the historical significance and cultural roots of jazz. The orchestra’s ability to make jazz accessible, even to those unfamiliar with the genre, speaks volumes about their

dedication to sharing the magic of this music. As the musicians skillfully navigated through the diverse sounds of jazz, the audience found themselves transported to the lively streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras. It wasn’t just about the music; it was a celebration of culture, a bridge between different worlds created through the language of jazz.

Let us not forget that this remarkable performance at The Rose Theatre marked their debut on the main stage, symbolizing a major milestone in the orchestra’s journey by not letting their place in the local arts scene fall flat.

In Toronto, approximately 1.4 million individuals aged 15 to 30 are deemed to be in social vulnerability, with 700,000 facing social isolation.6 Young adults seeking to forge connections in a rapidly evolving society may find themselves grappling with the daunting task of making life-altering decisions while facing internal uncertainties. One contributing factor often cited is the influence of screens, which can paradoxically both connect and isolate young people. While social media platforms offer avenues for connection, they can also perpetuate feelings of inadequacy and exclusion.

Le Mois de l’histoire des Noirs célèbre la lutte pour le respect et la dignité des Noirs à travers l’Amérique du Nord après des décennies de mauvais traitements transmis de génération en génération. We all know that February is Black History Month, but do we know why? We must understand what we are celebrating because without the learned history, the meaning of the month disappears. Let’s go back to the 1600’s and make our way to the present day, giving you a timeline of just how important it is we recognize Black History Month.

In the year 1604, the first known person of African heritage arrived in Canada, Mathieu Da Costa. He arrived with

explorers Pierre Du Gua De Monts and Samuel de Champlain. He was travelling alongside these French explorers because he was a interpreter who spoke more than three languages. He was the pinnacle link between the Mi’kmaq people and the Europeans.

In 1628, Olivier LeJeune was recorded to be the first enslaved African to have lived in Canada, which at the time was known as New France. Although he is known as Olivier LeJeune, that is not his real name. His real name remains unknown as he was bought from a priest and taken from Africa at a young age. That same priest gave him his last name.

In 1689, there were labour shortages in France. King Louis XIV, who was the patriarch of France at the time, permitted the European colonists to enslave Africans and Pawnee Native Americans to aid in the shortage.

In the years between 1749 and 1782, most of the African population that was brought to Nova Scotia were enslaved by the English or American settlers. There were about 400 enslaved and 17 free African people living in Halifax in the year 1750. A war preceded in 1760, which only pertepuated the enslavement of Africans and Pawnees.

During the War of Independence, 1775-1783, the British offered to free the slaves that sided with Britain during the war. This promise fueled 10 percent of those that stood with Britain in the Maritime provinces, where they formed settlements. Although they were offered freedom, they were facing harsh discrimination, they were given smaller plots of land, fewer provisions and were paid lower wages than their white counterparts. Due to this treatment about 1,200 loyalists accepted the offer to settle in Sierra Leone from the

Sierra Leone Company.

1793 was an important year for the enslaved. Chloe Cooley, an enslaved African woman in Upper Canada, now known as Ontario, resisted being sold and transported to the United States. The Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada at the time, John Graves Simcoe, supported the abolition of slavery even before making his way into Canada. The Lieutenant Governor ultimately heard of Cooley’s case and introduced an act titled, “An Act to Prevent the further Introduction of Slaves and to limit the Terms of Contracts for Servitude.” This was the catalyst in abolishing slavery in Canada. This act made it so that all slaves over the age of 25 were freed and simultaneously made it illegal to bring enslaved peoples into Upper Canada. This inevitably led to the decline of the number of slaves and made Canada a prime destination for those who were seeking freedom

In the 1850s, there were two important abolitionist newspapers founded in Canada, supporting the global anti-slavery movement. The first was The Voice of the Fugitive which was established in 1851 in

Ontario by Mary and Henry Bibb, where they published reports of the Underground Railroad. The second was The Provincial Freeman, which was published in Toronto and founded by Mary Ann and Isaac Shad. Viola Desmond, the woman who appears on our ten dollar bill, was a businesswoman who actively confronted racism when she refused to move from her seat in the “whites-only” section of the Roseland movie theatre in 1946 in Nova Scotia.

In 1958, Willie O’Ree, born in New Brunswick, was the first Black player in the National Hockey League, playing for the Boston Bruins. He was recognized for promoting diversity in the NHL.

Lincoln Alexander became the first Black Member of Parliament in the House of Commons in 1968. He later became the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, becoming the first Black person to hold a vice-regal position. He will soon be featured on ou twenty dollar bill.

Today, social media has seen an emergence of social movements promoting Black activism. We have seen more celebration of Black history, Black resilience, and Black presence in Canada. The Black

Black History Month fosters awareness and understanding of this heritage and preserves and celebrates national diversity. Pour notre prochain spectacle, je suis déterminée à contribuer activement aux groupes de musique, de costumes et de maquillage. J’aimerais souligner mon souhait de participer à tout groupe qui pourrait bénéficier de mon aide. Selon moi, il y a énormément à apprendre en travaillant avec des experts de différentes disciplines. J’ai choisi ces trois groupes spécifiques en évaluant attentivement mes compétences et mes talents, et en me concentrant sur ceux dans lesquels je me sens le plus à l’aise. En ce moment, je me consacre à l’obtention de mon certificat en cosmétique. Cette expérience me permet non seulement d’améliorer ma pratique professionnelle, mais aussi de contribuer significativement au développement de mon portfolio artistique.

Ce qui me passionne particulièrement, c’est le processus collaboratif nécessaire pour intégrer tous les éléments de la pièce. J’ai hâte de voir notre travail d’équipe prendre forme et de découvrir les coulisses du processus de production. Cette exploration m’apportera des connais-

Dans chaque histoire, il y a des personnes coupables. De la même manière, il y a également des innocents. Mais qu’est-ce qui définit vraiment l’innocence d’une personne ? Est-ce qu’il y a un mot comme celui-là ?

Violette Daveau, membre active de la communauté de Glendon, a écrit et géré la lecture de la pièce de théâtre intitulée « Les innocents », une tâche difficile, mais enrichissante sur le plan créatif. Celui-ci était le projet principal de la classe d’apprentissage expérientiel de Daveau,

sances précieuses que je pourrai mettre en pratique dans les mini-pièces que j’écris et joue régulièrement lors de mes participations à des événements artistiques dans mon église.

Je suis consciente que l’un de mes plus grands défis sera de vaincre mes propres insécurités et de renforcer ma confiance en moi. Pour relever ce défi, j’ai établi des objectifs précis, dont celui de m’entraîner à exprimer ouvertement toutes mes idées, qu’elles soient jugées bonnes ou mauvaises. En même temps, je m’engage à améliorer ma capacité à m’exprimer en mon nom propre, ce qui renforcera ma présence et mon impact au sein des groupes auxquels je prends part.

Pour contribuer au bon fonctionnement de mes groupes et au succès du spectacle, je mise sur une communication active avec les membres, encourageant un échange d’idées fluide. J’aspire également à jouer un rôle central dans le maintien de l’organisation et de la concentration sur les objectifs fixés par le groupe. Mon rêve est de diriger le groupe de maquillage, car c’est dans ce domaine que je souhaite me développer davantage. De plus, j’ai pour objectif de diriger et de jouer de la musique, que ce soit en direct ou enregistré ; c’est dans ce domaine que je me sens le plus à l’aise et épanouie artistiquement. Je suis fascinée par l’énergie créative qui se manifeste et par l’ouverture de chacun à de nouvelles idées. La sym-

qu’elle recommande aux étudiants qui veulent suivre leurs passions. Sa pièce est passionnante avec une intrigue remplie de problèmes réels liés à des tragédies dévastatrices.

La pièce, écrite comme un mystère de meurtre, aborde les thèmes du consentement, de la confiance, de l’amour et du blâme. Dans un monde où le chagrin et le désir sont partagés par tous, peut-on vraiment se considérer comme innocent ? Quelle est la signification de ce mot et qui peut le revendiquer dans la nomenclature ? Avant d’assister à la lecture de la pièce, j’ai été captivée dès la lecture du scénario grâce à son air mystérieux. Grâce à ses acteurs talentueux qui ont tous travaillé avec Daveau pour donner vie au scénario, la pièce a été rendue vivante par une composition pleine de suspense.

Lors de la lecture de la pièce, les deux régisseurs, Célia Teyssier et Anna Husnain, ont préparé le public en prenant la parole avant que Teyssier ne lise les indications scéniques. Cette mise en scène a

biose au sein du groupe crée un espace sécurisant où nous pouvons librement partager nos idées novatrices. Globalement, je suis très enthousiaste à l’idée de voir nos idées se concrétiser et de vivre une expérience d’apprentissage enrichissante grâce

à notre collaboration artistique. J’ai fixé des objectifs personnels ambitieux pour cette expérience et j’espère non seulement les atteindre, mais aussi voir comment ils s’intègreront harmonieusement dans notre performance globale.

La pièce suit l’inspecteur, un détective joué par le talentueux Danny Andary, qui lutte pour garder son emploi en résolvant une affaire criminelle complexe. Au fur et à mesure que de plus en plus de personnes sont interrogées, il en apprend davantage sur cette histoire.

Viola Murati fait un excellent travail en interprétant le personnage de Rose Liliam, qui s’efforce pour trouver l’authenticité et le réconfort amoureux tout en faisant face à un choix difficile entre son petit ami et sa meilleure amie. Cette situation est encore compliquée par une série d’événements traumatisants et des interrogatoires sévères de l’inspecteur.

Amine El Otmani incarne parfaitement le personnage de Martin, le petit ami de Rose, qui est coincé dans un déni réticent de la situation. Lors de son interrogatoire par l’inspecteur, il est confronté à un air de suspicion, car ses réponses contrastent immédiatement avec celles de Rose. Cependant, il est possible que les réponses de Martin aient été influencées par ses amis, les Malton — joués par Monica Neagu et Celeste O’Brien — qui étaient représentés comme de petits diables sur son épaule, incitant au doute et à l’hésitation dans sa vie qui se termine finalement par des choix malheureux. Qui est responsable dans de telles situations ? Qui a poussé cette personne à agir ? Elle-même ou ceux qui l’ont convaincue de le faire ?

Geneviève Stacey joue le rôle de Valérie Devin, un autre antagoniste de la pièce. À travers des dialogues expressifs et d’un air mystérieux d’hésitation tendue, cette dernière fait vivre la personnalité complexe de Val, tandis que l’inspecteur l’observe avec suspicion. Valérie est une adolescente française qui doit affronter les douloureux combats de l’amour et de l’absence, ainsi que les conséquences qui en découlent. Au fur et à mesure que l’histoire avance, de plus en plus d’informations sont révélées sur sa vie, alors qu’elle lutte également avec des éléments extérieurs tels que l’amour et le contrôle.

La question suivante se pose : si la vie est une série d’événements qui échappent à notre contrôle et si nos actions en sont le résultat, jusqu’à quel point pouvons-nous être tenus responsables de nos actes ? Est-ce que notre innocence nous est enlevée lorsque nous agissons par amour, peur ou douleur ? Et qu’en estil de l’inaction ? Qu’advient-il lorsque nous n’arrivons pas à exprimer ou à accomplir nos désirs ? Cette pièce traite de ces ques-

tions.

Et pour finir, il y a Joséphine. Jessica Corchia incarne le rôle de Joséphine, la mère de Val et également professeure de français à l’école fréquentée par Val, Martin et Rose. Joséphine est une femme attentive, mais elle était mariée à un homme qui ne l’aimait pas. Comment gère-t-elle la situation ? Comment surmonter la perte de son amant ? Est-ce que notre cœur brisé prouve notre innocence malgré nos choix ou nos actions ? Et que faire de ceux que nous ne sommes pas en mesure de protéger et de nourrir ?

Chaque action a ses conséquences, qu’elles se produisent instantanément comme une balle de pistolet, ou lentement comme lors d’un interrogatoire difficile mené par un inspecteur qui semble ne pas trouver de clarté dans une situation aussi complexe. Cette pièce est une réflexion philosophique sur les principes moraux et les questions de la responsabilité, de la culpabilité et de la motivation derrière chaque action. Violette Daveau a abordé ces questions à travers le regard de différents personnages, chacun guidé par ses propres valeurs et principes, qui la mènent dans des directions opposées.

La souffrance est une expérience universelle chez l’être humain : ce qui nous distingue, c’est notre lutte contre elle et la façon dont nous décidons de la surmonter. Malheureusement, nos actions sont souvent liées à un schéma plus vaste ; nous réagissons et répondons à un récit que nous ne pouvons pas toujours maîtriser. Mais cela nous rend authentiques. Cela nous rappelle simplement notre humanité. En fin de compte, rien n’est plus humain que l’influence que nous avons les uns sur les autres.
