La Cafétéria de Glendon : Where ‘Mystery Meat’ Takes on a Whole New Meaning Amie Sosa Journaliste bilingue In a world that increasingly values inclusiveness and accommodation, numerous individuals and communities have made substantial progress in advocating for their rights and needs. However, as a new school year begins, the reputation of the Glendon cafeteria is under intense scrutiny. Many Glendon students voice their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as the cafeteria’s lack of attention to their dietary needs, including food restrictions and allergies. Allegations of contamination within the cafeteria have only added to the controversy. This situation reminds us that the journey toward inclusivity and accommodation is an ongoing one, with opportunities for improve-

ment when confronting challenges.

However, the challenges go beyond allergies. A significant portion of the student body adheres to specific dietary regimens, such as veganism, vegetarianism, or religious dietary restrictions. These students often struggle to find foods in the cafeteria that meet their dietary preferences. Advocates for these students argue that the cafeteria should expand its culinary Continued on PAGE 4

Letter to the Student Unions: A Condemnation of War Alison Smith Glendon Alumna ‘98 **Disclaimer: As per our constitution, section 1 article 7: The opinions expressed in Pro Tem are the opinions of individual writers, and should not be affiliated with those of the Pro Tem Team, Glendon College, or York University.** As a York/Glendon alumna, former CKRG News Director and Prix Molière recipient, I am disappointed in what appears to be a lack of condemnation of war, and more student organizations taking sides — is that accurate? I implore you to clarify and distinguish the YFS/YUGSA/GCSU from the initial statement leaning to sides, as opposed to condemning outright the horrors of war. Please accept my official request as an alumna to amend this position immediately because WAR is the enemy. I’m not sure what your experience with war first-hand or even second-hand is — please forgive me if you ‘get it’. My experience is humbly second-hand — yet I thought we were growing out of this type of atrocity that affects generations. I remember friends coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan with PTSD and beating their fiancees and dying from suicide due to the residual mental health crises of war. I remember recessions and lack of availability of jobs, having to work four part-time jobs just to survive in Toronto, and waiting for

manager positions for decades. The enemy is not political. The enemy is WAR. There are no winners in war. The victims are the civilians affected by war and conflict leading to war, the atrocities committed by those who refuse to let go of the past, who resist change, who cannot seem to reach for the future and think globally — universally understanding that each of us is 1 in 8 billion on the planet, and need to share space. We will not survive otherwise. Play all these acts of war out to the end: are you really willing to die for the beliefs of older generations that won’t be here to pay the great debt they are leaving us with, both financially and in human conflict? And if there must be any conflict, don’t we have the technological capability to fight it without the cost to civilian life? If anything is the enemy it’s resistance to change (aka ‘the inevitable’), corporate greed oblivious to human cost, lack of understanding that we are all meat sacks on the same rock careening through space at a gazillion kilometers an hour. Specks to the universe that hold no meaning to it — yet we hold meaning to each other. Together is the only way we get out of this alive. I have a deep appreciation of humans supporting one another based on the 30+ years I worked at community centre pools, and as a sport and business coach. Helping rather than hurting. Building, solving, creating. We are all, truly, in this together. Please publicly express a distinction condemning war, and focus on bringing peace in a horrific conflict whose greatest victims are civilians — and move forward in our collective global future. Peace to you, Alison Smith

La Cafétéria de Glendon : Where ‘Mystery Meat’ Takes on a Whole New Meaning (cont.) Amie Sosa Bilingual Journalist offerings to include a more diverse range of choices to accommodate the varying dietary preferences and needs of its diverse student population.

In response to these concerns, the Glendon community is presently working with students, teachers, and cafeteria staff to identify solutions and establish a safer and welcoming cafeteria environment. There is optimistic progress underway, with active efforts to address these issues and enhance the Glendon Cafeteria for every student. Advocacy initiatives are presently in motion, and we can anticipate the prompt arrival of solutions. While there are present challenges and critiques, there is hope for progress. By considering the concerns of students, working together to address issues, and implementing tangible modifications, the Glendon Cafeteria can transform into an expansive and welcoming establishment. Regardless of individual learning methods, here are some diverse tips to pick and choose from

for more effective studying during midterm season. For some readers, it will be their first time writing midterm exams at the university level. My goal to provide versatile tips is twofold: to maximize quality study time to get you the grades you deserve; and to give you tools that will help you with stress-management and task-completion management in the professional world af-

of community among all students, guaranteeing that everyone can enjoy their meals in a secure and pleasant setting.

Effective studying is characterized by quality, which is strongly influenced by getting a full night’s rest. To improve your focus and capacity to retain new material, aim to sleep for no less than eight hours nightly. Lack of sleep is detrimental to proficiency in studying because it induces a zombie-like state, significantly decreasing the capacity to recall information previously covered, irrespective of the number of coffees consumed throughout the day. Take charge of your studies by starting to study anywhere between one and two weeks in advance of your actual exam. This could be as simple as reviewing lecture notes every night, focusing on different sets of notes each night. This familiarizes you with the flow of ideas, concepts, and definitions associated with each course lesson without actually studying seriously. Doing this before or after school, work, or a workout is ultimately great because studying sections occasionally is better than studying everything all at once. Re-reading material over and over again helps make it part of your long-term memory. Procrastination is not recommended because with exams, you get what you give based on

the time allocated to studying, and the time spent on really understanding the material studied. Being intentional and proactive with your studying gives you power without the stress. Then you can thrive instead of survive. Keep your study space clean, organized, and away from your bed to avoid stress. An unorganized study space can increase stress levels, particularly when dealing with challenging material, and reminders of unfinished chores can compound this stress. Before beginning your study session, spend between 10 and 30 minutes organizing your workspace, folding laundry, sending emails, or completing other necessary tasks to clear your mind. Consistently studying in a place that is not associated with your place of mental peace and physical rest will improve your ability to relax and sleep during your time off, and it will allow you to study more effectively when you do. If you study from the comfort of your own bed, it may negatively impact the quality of your sleep as well. Don’t underestimate the power of taking breaks. Remember that you have control over the nature and length of these breaks. It can be hard to study effectively if

Métropole you are spending long periods of time sitting down, being isolated from your friends, and being shut in a room indoors. It is good to schedule some time to relax every couple of hours. Some options for relaxation include taking a walk around campus or your neighborhood, engaging in self-care, completing a necessary task, visiting the GAC or your local gym for exercise, communicating with loved ones, or briefly socializing with friends. These activities give you a break to absorb what you had previously reviewed, allows you to come back to studying with a refreshed and more focused mindset, and prevents frustration

or fatigue from impacting your studying. Additionally, these actions positively impact the quality of your day, making you more satisfied with it despite having dedicated most of it to studying. Make sure you understand the material you are studying. Don’t hesitate to ask questions during class or visit your professor during office hours if necessary. Keep in mind that you’re investing in your education with your tuition. You and your professor are sharing knowledge, so make the most of your investment and take advantage of the resources available to you. You can establish study groups in your

classes and initiate them early in the semester. It is important to note that no person has any ulterior motives against you; at Glendon, all members are supportive of each other. Nonetheless, avoid allowing such study sessions with friends to transform into counterproductive conversations. Finally, it is essential to keep in mind that you are an individual before being a student; therefore, prioritize your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health. Your happiness and personal life should always be your top priority. If they are not, take time to re-evaluate your course load or how you manage stress and time. Re-

member that it’s possible to study hard and have a balanced social life, which are both crucial to enjoying your life as a student. By following stress management tips and completing tasks, you can achieve success now and in the future. These skills are valuable beyond the classroom, as they are relevant to success in online employment, graduate studies, and any other pursuits you may undertake. By assuming responsibility, being proactive, and anticipating challenges, these guidelines will benefit your academic and professional endeavors.

SOCIAL ACTION AT THE GRASSROOTS: Youth Park Clean-up What Can You and Your Friends Do to Care for the Earth? Melissa Zahraei Contributor “I really wanna do this because every time I walk through the park, I just see loads of trash.”

Fostering a community can be done through simple acts of service that unify neighbours and contribute to the betterment of the area we live in. The Junior Youth Empowerment Program, engaging individuals aged 11 to 14 in studies, recreation, arts, and community service, is implemented worldwide and locally in Toronto. A group of seventh-grade students

from the Peanut neighborhood convene every week to read a collection of books focused on community service and moral empowerment. The book they’re currently working on, Walking the Straight Path, features tales passed down through different generations that convey moral concepts. In the most recent meeting held before the park cleanup, they discussed the significance of caring for the environment and nature for the benefit of future generations. It is crucial to take responsibility for the world entrusted to us by past generations, and work towards improving it. The junior youth noticed that the park had accumulated a significant amount of litter in the month since school started. One of them suggested returning to Godstone Park, having done a cleanup in the spring, to help remove the garbage. They approached the task enthusiastically and even encountered a few friends who joined in their efforts. An elderly man expressed gratitude as they traversed the park. The seventh-grade students’ con-

Sustainabili-what? Celia Teyssier Regenesis Contributor Sustainability extends beyond ecology and is more than just a trendy term. It is a powerful concept that lays the groundwork for a world in which our needs are met without compromising the well-being of future generations. At its core, sustainability involves dedication to balancing present and future needs by upholding the significance of three essential factors in society: economic, social, and environmental. Environmental sustainability focuses on responsibly managing natural resources to reduce our ecological impact by conserving resources, mitigating pollution, and preserving biodiversity. Key issues within environmental sustainability include combatting climate change, protecting endangered species, and ensuring access to clean air and water. Economic sustainability involves striving for long-term viability and resilience. It is crucial to strike a balance be-

Social action has a domino effect, inspiring others to join in and contribute to their respective communities. Early in the school year, the group submitted a formal letter to their elementary school, requesting permission to plant trees on the property to enhance the environment and promote greenery. Through a year’s participation in the program, they further developed their understanding of community needs regarding service and social action. With the valuable insights they have gained from serving their communities at such a young and precious age, this generation is sure to benefit the world.

tween economic growth and the preservation of environmental resources for future generations. It focuses on the lasting impact of economic activities on society and the environment, emphasizing social sustainability as critical. Sustainable economics seeks to create economic systems that foster long-term prosperity, job security, and innovation while minimizing negative externalities such as pollution and inequality. People are at the heart of sustainability. Social sustainability aims to establish equitable and all-inclusive societies that protect the well-being and rights of all individuals. It encompasses several arPhotos by GCSU eas, such as healthcare,

education, affordable housing, and social justice, among others. A socially sustainable world acknowledges the significance of diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for all, as each of these dimensions is interconnected. Any disproportionality in one aspect can have ripple effects on others. Environmental degradation can result in social and economic instability. Informed choices prioritizing sustainability in our daily lives, careers, and communities are within our power to shape the future. Today’s actions to reduce waste, support ethical businesses, advocate for environmental policies, or promote social inclusivity determine tomorrow’s course. Sustainability is a practical framework for creating a harmonious world. Our choices can ensure thriving ecosystems, prosperous economies, and equitable societies for generations to come. Sustainability is more than just an aspiration; it is a transformative approach that empowers action towards a brighter and more balanced future. Our goal now is to find the balance that allows us to live in a sustainable world.

Issues and Ideas

Hairy Women: De-tangling Hair Politics Maria Eydmans French Editor Since 2001, the ‘Battle of Hair’ has been a raging issue throughout my life. In elementary school, I tried to use hairspray for the first time, which led to disastrous results. My very strict sixth grade teacher had scolded me for wearing my hood in class until I told her that I was having “a ridiculously bad hair day,” which she then understood immediately. But why? My hair troubles didn’t end there. My mother used to always compliment me on my soft, thick, blonde hair. Growing up, I thought “well, I may not be beautiful, but at least I have my hair.” Until I didn’t. It darkened, thinned out, and became scraggly. I started losing my hair at 12 years old, and my mother tried everything — she massaged my scalp with rye bread, beer, kefir, and other traditional Eastern European home remedies. When they didn’t work, we used henna, amla oil, rice water, castor oil, expensive horse shampoo, the curly girl method, and a cornucopia of other treatments. Ultimately, the condition and appearance of my hair started affecting my mental health. At 18 years old, I thought it best to just shave my head and be free of the thing that brought me so much misery. My mom, of course, was against the idea. Instead, she let me cut my hair to ears’ length. But why? What great difference would it make if I didn’t have any hair? Or if I had an inch of it left? I felt that I was a prisoner in my own body. I asked myself: “could it have been the very minimum amount that I needed to have to still be beautiful?” Looking back now, after having gone to the doctor and having been diagnosed with pretty severe anemia, I wonder how I could be so entrapped by the condition of my hair and not by the lack of oxygen in my blood. My own experience made me wonder about other women’s experiences. I took a look around me and felt that I could identify, generally, how the female community all dealt with this seeming ‘enemy.’ I questioned the current political climate that fights to normalize having hair on our bodies but not its absence from our heads. If we treat hair as a necessary social condition for women, then we must dissect how this condition is represented inter-contextually; that is, looking at women’s hair as a transnational, transcultural,

and transethnic phenomenon. We can see evidence of this necessity not only dayto-day, but actually fortified on screen. In Fleabag, a one-woman show turned sitcom depicts the devastating effects of being an imperfect woman, where the characters believe that “hair is everything.” No matter what she does with it, the hair on a woman’s head is always a statement — public or personal, political or social, or otherwise. I interviewed Glendonites and other young women from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds in order to better understand the loaded relationship between women and their hair across contexts. Most of these women chose to remain anonymous as not to be a single woman representative of their entire community. The first interview I conducted was in person with a Muslim Glendon alumni, who requested anonymity. At the time of this interview, she was in her fourth year. I was interested in her experience as a woman who covers her hair due to her personal religiosity and modesty, and who in turn, paradoxically does and doesn’t participate in the public scrutiny that women face in terms of their hair: M: “I am here today to talk to you, as a member of a religious and social community, about the hijab. As an outsider, I can only assume and empathize, but some would argue never truly understand. What I do know is that the hijab is an Islamic requirement and that it represents submission to Allah, modesty, and faith. My first question to you is: How accurate would you say this perception is and is there anything you would like to clarify or correct about it?” A: “I’ve actually met people who think it’s all about curbing men, so honestly I think yours is pretty fair. Hijab is an act of faith. For modesty… I think it’s important for people to know it’s not a one-way street. Both sexes are supposed to behave modestly: women cover and men lower their gaze.” M: “How does men’s perception affect a woman’s relationship with her hair? How do you feel your relationship is with and without the male gaze?” A: “What I love about my hijab is that I feel empowered. I feel like people listen to me when I’m talking. They’re not focusing all their attention on my looks. I love my hair, too. And I love that it’s all mine.” M: “Why do some Muslim women choose not to cover their hair? Why do you believe some struggle with covering their hair?” A: “That’s a pretty controversial topic. I’m not sure I can answer the first part. The second…I think it comes from maybe being raised not religious? Or growing up some-

where where nobody else is wearing it or makes fun of you for wearing it. I can’t really speak on what others think, though.” M: “Do you believe that, no matter what a woman chooses to do with her hair, it is always construed as a political, social, or personal statement?” A: “I think in a way. I know mine definitely is — it’s a clear indicator of my religion and my faith. And I’m incredibly proud of that. I don’t think it’s always a statement. If you are just wearing your hair how it is… I’m not sure, actually. I think it could go both ways.” With ‘pop appropriation’ — the treatment of cultural practices and/or symbols as a commodity to be popularized in the media, comparative of ‘pop culture’ — on the rise, especially the appropriation of Black women’s hairstyles, I wondered about the African-Canadian woman’s experience in expressing herself culturally, ethnically, and/or personally through her hair. That is, the judgement and scrutiny that she faces in doing so and the blatant hypocrisy she may face when the same hair that is criticized on her is praised on women of other ethnicities online. The second interview was held with Eden Chekol, a student at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson), over email: M: “What does your hair mean to you, privately, publicly, personally and culturally?” E: “I definitely base my hairstyles on how I feel at any given moment. In a cultural regard, though, I hate to cut or trim my hair and I personally feel like my hair is honourable in the sense that I don’t feel inclined to reveal/work on it unless there is a serious

reason.” M: “What are your thoughts on the appropriation of Black women’s hair (styles, care, protection, etc.)?” E: “I can’t rationalize cultural appropriation [as ignorance] as I used to. It seems almost intentionally disrespectful which is why it feels juvenile to engage with it.” M: “What are your thoughts on the following statement: No matter what a woman chooses to do with her hair, it is always construed as a political, social, or personal statement?” E: “As a Black woman, I’ve noticed how different hairstyles (straight hair, braids, locs, cornrows, box braids, etc.) have caused strangers to speak to me/respect me on a different level so I agree that my personal appearance sends a particular kind of message. I would hope that I come across as a holistic, non-caring, and anti-bureaucratic civilian.” The insights I gained from these interviews were ones I have never experienced before. Even though I felt as though I was alone in the strenuous and toxic relationship I had with my hair, I realized that this relationship can take on many forms for women — some more overt than others. Hair on the body is plucked, tweezed, waxed, bleached, removed, or made to look invisible. The hair on our heads, however, has a responsibility to be full of life and never dull — a tell-tale sign of a woman’s mental unravelling. Just look at Jennifer’s Body… nobody would have ever suspected something was wrong if her hair looked ‘good.’

Why I’m Not Afraid of AI and You Shouldn’t Be Either Maria Eydmans French Editor In the 21st century, we now find ourselves in what some people refer to as the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. With the invention of the internet in 1983, and the development of the World Wide Web in 1989, it has been a long time coming. Now,

with the power of a portable, pocket-sized computer glued to everyone’s hands, and the fact that we have an unlimited amount of information at our fingertips, we are living in the developed Digital Age, accompanied by even newer and more forward-thinking inventions.

The new ‘cool kid’ on the block is artificial intelligence, or AI. It is the subject of controversy, of academic discourse, and of everyday conversation. Many think it to be the demise of cognitive thinking and a great threat to many job-holders, especially editors and writers. Websites like Grammarly and OpenAI advertise flawless typing assistance or idea generation. There are at least dozens of other similar albeit less popular or less renowned programs that offer similar services. In response to telling someone that I am looking to become an editor, personally, I have been told that I “should pursue something that isn’t a dying career”. Is the human editor really bound for extinction? To be honest, my first time hearing about AI, particularly ChatGPT, I was scared. My future was suddenly uncertain, and my career undermined because of some bot. I took a class where we were prompted to use AI to our advantage. As a matter of fact, our professor walked us through the registration process and informed us about the types of questions we could ask (I should mention that he did his due diligence in advising us against using it for academic purposes). In experimenting with the program, I discovered ways that I could use it to my advantage: narrow topic generation, inspiration, name-sourcing, source finding, and others. I have also discovered ways in which it fails. AI is by no means perfect, especially in the creative sphere. Firstly, AI can only regenerate used ideas. This is a huge issue when you are looking to write some-

thing new or avoid copyright infringement. This is especially true in college and university when you could face very serious consequences when accused of plagiarism. AI does not only falter in the creative sphere, though. Even when proofreading, transcript editing, or copy editing, AI underperforms on many fronts. In a post on LinkedIn, Mignon Fogarty — grammar enthusiast — shared her tribulations with Claude, an AI program that is capable of handling large amounts of textual content: “I had AI fail in an interesting way this afternoon! I had a pretty rough transcript of an interview, so I fed it into Claude [...] and I gave it a prompt to clean up the transcript. [...] [I]t was totally fine for the first 3 pages [...]. And then it went completely off the rails. It started deleting whole sentences, and by page 14, it was deleting half the text on the page!” Fogarty finishes her post by clarifying that, even after running her work through an AI program to sand off the rough edges, she will always go back and review the work — even if it didn’t mess up this one time. To finish off, I thought it would be appropriate to ask ChatGPT to generate a couple of concluding phrases for me. I will include my own and the imposter’s, and I

would like you to try and guess which one I wrote organically and which one I copied off of the internet: For copy editors like us, there’s no need to fear AI; instead, it is a valuable tool that can enhance our work and streamline processes. Embracing AI’s potential can empower us to be more efficient, accurate, and creative in our editorial endeavours. As powerful as artificial intelligence is, it will always be just that: artificial. Revolution and innovation need the human touch, mind, and ideas. To optimize AI is to use it to better your work, not to finish it. Much like giving a friend outside your specialization a paper to review to see if it’s understandable, AI is used to turn your first draft into the second.

Des chansons comme « There Is a Light That Never Goes Out » et « Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want » s’intègrent parfaitement au récit, en accentuant la profondeur émotionnelle du film.

Tout comme les paroles envoûtantes de The Smiths, « To die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine » (mourir à tes côtés, eh bien, ce serait un plaisir et un privilège).

Comida de Casa: Beef Fajitas and Mexican Rice Natalia Tovilla-Bátiz Section Editor Mexican food is often seen as a comfort food, but for me, it has always been the food for the soul – the cuisine that makes me feel most at home. As a Mexican living in Canada, I find that many people living here think that Mexican food is fatty and unhealthy, it’s spicy and fried, that it’s junk food. I disagree, on the contrary, not all dishes are spicy, fatty, unhealthy, or fried – not all recipes call for the use of chili peppers, starchy doughs, or cheesy stuff. Most Mexican dishes are quite nutrientdense, easy-to-make, and are just as delicious as the festive foods we are known for on special occasions. We use fresh,

whole, and specially seasoned ingredients at home. I wanted to share a family recipe for Mexican beef fajitas and Mexican rice, which is a dish packed with flavour, that uses nutritious ingredients, always makes me happy, and is easy to make. This fast recipe is great for the fall back-to-school rush, and it is perfect for satisfying all your cozy fall season cravings. Ingredients for Fajitas: • Thin lean cuts of veal or beef, cut into long strips • 1/2 Onion, finely sliced • 2 Bell peppers, sliced • 3 tbsp of Bovril liquid Beef bouillon (beef marinade) • 1 pack of white tortillas (or corn tortillas if found at your local store) • 2 tsp onion powder • 2 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp black pepper • 1/2 lime (optional) Ingredients for Mexican rice: • 3 tbsp cooking oil (any) • 1 tsp of salt • 1 can of tomato paste • 1/4 cup of peas, washed (optional) • 1 cup of basmati rice • 1 1/2 cups of hot water • 1 handful of cilantro (optional) Directions 1. First, you have to prepare the raw beef or veal by cutting it into long slices and placing them into a bowl. Be sure to chop the bell peppers and onion into long slices, and set them aside for later. If you have a kettle, boil the water now so it is ready to use for making the rice later on.

2. Then, add the bovril liquid beef bouillon (beef marinade), onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper to the meat and ensure that these ingredients are mixed evenly. The beef marinade used in the recipe has salt already so there is no need to add salt in this seasoning step. If you do add salt, you risk the meat becoming too salty. 3. Next, place a pot on the stove, add cooking oil and the rice on low-medium heat. Mix the rice into the oil and toast it for about 2 minutes, or until it turns a golden colour. 4. Then add the tomato paste. Mix the toasted rice with the tomato paste until it is fully incorporated and then add the hot water into the pot, raise the stovetop temperature to medium heat. Be sure to mix occasionally to avoid rice sticking to the bottom of the pot. 5. Once the rice is boiling, add the cilantro and peas for extra flavour, although these are optional. 6. Finally, with a stove-top pan on lowmedium heat, add the oil and onion. Let the onion cook until golden, then add the bell peppers. When they start to soften, add the marinated meat. The meat should take about 2 to 4 minutes to cook to a medium or medium-rare cut. Remember to keep stirring the rice so that it does not stick to the bottom of the pan or burn, it should turn pink or red in colour. 7. Once the rice and meat are ready, warm your tortillas in the microwave or on a stove-top pan. Serve some fajitas into your tortilla and enjoy with your side of delicious Mexican rice. From my cocina to yours, I sincerely hope you give this delicious recipe a try!

3. Votre repas est prêt.
