Buying Vintage, and Thrifting: Combating Consumerism, and Looking Good!

Michael Aquilino English Journalist

In this day and age, it seems as if virtually everything is always changing and expanding. There are many seemingly novel ways to make things “better” (a greatly subjective notion), and more productive. In a world that has perhaps come to prize excess and innovation, everyday individuals, the consumers, sit at the forefront of socio-economic transformation. Contemporarily speaking, people are often perceived not as the individuals that they are, but rather, as part of a social amalgamation, targeted as a faceless whole. While corporations certainly endeavour to personalize the consumer experience, tailoring advertisements and new product lines to interests they detect in the

ever-growing technological environment, the true objectives of corporations are to accumulate vast amounts of wealth, as quickly as possible. While this concept is quite overt, it is characteristic of the foundation of the capitalist economic structure, which consolidates socioeconomic and political power into the hands of the exclusive upper class, and away from the populous working class. This concept is one that has historically defined, and continues to define, much of Western civilization, one which is nonetheless flawed. That being said, many socioeconomic alternatives are often viable in theory, yet largely unfeasible or detrimental in practice; think socialism, communism, anarchism, etc. Hence, while capitalism may be as close to the ideal socioeconomic circumstances that modern-day

societies hope to achieve, it can indubitably, on account of the individual, be ameliorated.

Capitalism blatantly embraces the maximization of profit at the expense of the welfare of workers, the environment, and competition. Under the capitalist economic structure, workers are often paid low wages, while still expected to be efficient and productive, commonly operating in deplorable conditions that are largely beyond their personal means. Natural resources are depleted, harmful toxins are released into the atmosphere, and competing businesses are forced to succumb to the dominion of their formidable counterparts. All this, in turn, causes environmental destruction on a scale never before imagined or endured. While

Coucou, Glendon !

Where is spring hiding? I suspect that this is the question of all of us stuck in frigid, wintry Toronto at the moment. Am I the only one dreaming about balmy temperatures and a palm-tree studded landscape, a stunning, cerulean expanse of water stretching out as far as the eye can see? I recently finished reading Elin Hilderbrand’s The Hotel Nantucket, and the only thing that could have made it better was if I had been stretched out on the beach while reading (with appropriate sun protection, of course!). Alas, I remain at Glendon, navigating my way across salt and snow, always daydreaming of warmer days. A bright spot in any weather, however, is a new issue of Pro Tem, and wow, do I have news for you!

Essay-Writing 101: A Journalist’s Humble Take

Writing an essay is often a daunting, much-dreaded task. It is either a student’s strong suit, or the opposite. Essays can appear as frightening monsters, at once terrifying to approach and impossible to slay (that is, to receive a great mark). Every class, and every professor, is different, with essay components, topics, requirements, and complexity, differing from one paper to the next. I myself am torn between a preference for exams or essays. Exams entail a shorter amount of time, no writing aids, and a lot of pressure, while essays require much longer periods of preparation, writing aids, and a level of pressure that varies from person to person. Honestly, I am prone to choosing the latter over the former, as I can take my time to ensure that my semi-perfectionist self is satisfied with the end results. The only issue is, between the two regularly assigned forms of educational evaluation, essays can take up a lot more time, energy, and mental capacity — fully absorbing students into their grasp.

Fear not, as I will attempt a guide that may help students better tackle these harrowing, stress-inducing assignments that plague the to-do lists of many higher education-seeking individuals. This guide applies to the novices, the misfortuned, all of those seasoned essay writers looking to fine-tune or reform their approach, and anyone in between! The following guide is my go-to approach, and has garnered me some modest success, but may not work for everyone. Nonetheless, it is my hope that you are able to pick out a few valuable techniques from the guide!

1. Organization is key

The key to writing successful and effective essays is remaining organized throughout the entire writing process. From the outset, students should know what they are going to be writing about, and how they are going to write it — that is, where they are going to find their information, and how they are going to structure this information into a cohesive text. When assigned an essay, my first task is to read through its description thoroughly, generally about two weeks or more prior to the deadline. This description can usually be found on the course syllabus, or in a separate document posted on the course website. Students

need to know exactly what is being asked of them, and how they can see such requests to fruition. Many essays are open-ended, relevant to course themes and concepts, while others involve pre-assigned topics from the course instructor. In either case, I would advise students to pursue a topic they are both interested in, and knowledgable about; something they can easily pose an argument towards, and rigorously explore without an onslaught of boredom or frustration.

Essay-writing is a time-consuming process, one that requires dedication and motivation. Hence, choosing an appropriate topic is of the utmost importance in the essay-writing process. Once a topic has been chosen, a student should now begin to envision the make-up of their essay. At this stage and beyond, I suggest that any brainstorming and note-taking be done by hand on paper, as opposed to digitally. I am a strong believer in “old school” learning strategies; transferring your thoughts through graphite, I find, is a lot more fruitful than through plastic.

2. Research, research, and more research.

After organising your thoughts, you can move on to the process of finding the resources you will use to construct your essay. In order to do this, you must know what you are looking for, and where to find it. During this step, I like to identify any keywords, phrases, questions, or ideas associated with my topic of interest, and jot them down on a piece of paper. For example, an essay that I am currently writing pertains to the historical evolution of treatment and perception of mental health, particularly concerning lobotomy/shock treatment and psychopharmaceutical drugs, during a specific period of time (1890-1990). To write this essay, I will need useful information upon my topic of interest, helping me to argue my perspective. Ideas might include who was involved in performing lobotomies and administering shock treatment, what kinds of psychopharmaceutical drugs were available, when these drugs were available, what kinds of illnesses, or perceived illnesses, were being treated, and any external driving forces that precipitated change in this sector. These topics could be included in my search, stemming from my own interests or topics provided by a course instructor. The length of your essay will be a determinant of how many questions you may need to find answers to. Remember: the more relevant ideas you can concisely touch upon, the better your essay may turn out.

A critical concept is that of the thesis, which will come after you have gath-

ered all of your information. While some believe crafting a thesis for their essay is their first main task, and a well-constructed thesis can certainly be supported through research found after-the-fact, I do not believe that the best argument can be made without first consulting all the available sources. When searching for sources of academic value, I frequently use the York University online library database. This database, accessible to all York students,

provides an effective means by which to sift through thousands of useful sources, and also includes an advanced search option, allowing students to refine their search parameters. Students can choose the type of resource that they may be looking for (books, articles, theses, etc.), and narrow down their results through keywords and phrases. Many of the database’s resources are peer-reviewed, and available digitally

for easy perusal. It is important to be thorough, and partially-exhaustive in pursuit of sources, diversifying the content to consult — the best essays and theses argue a topic of interest from a variety of perspectives. While rare, if the library does not have what you are looking for, other beneficial places to look include Google Scholar, specific academic journals (collections of which can be found through databases like JSTOR), and simple internet searches. Be careful to identify sources of scholarly relevance, including those written by an academic or sponsored by an accredited institution. Once you have traversed the web, located quality sources, and read through them while taking note of any important information, you can now move on to the next step.

3. Tying everything together

While some students may see the actual writing of the essay as the most crucial step in the process of essay-writing, I argue that it is actually the establishment of an essay’s foundation, that really take the cake — after all, a house can look great, but without a structurally-sound foundation, everything will come crumbling down. There is no doubt that the writing is significant, but much of essay-writing, aside from its foundations, is stylistic in nature — making things sound and look appealing. The fruit of the essay comes from its intrinsic character: in other words, what the essay is, not what it looks like. Hence, steps one and two, being organized, and finding appropriate information, are of utmost importance. Nevertheless, after a student has compiled an adequate amount of notes, they can begin to turn their brainstorming into a more refined piece of writing: the essay itself.

While a structural approach to an essay can differ from one person to the next, and is in no way rigid by definition, I like to follow a four or five paragraph framework — the introduction, two or three body paragraphs, and the conclusion. I find that this method has successfully met the desires of my professors, and has allowed me to attain favourable results. First, the introduction. A student’s introduction should have the following components: an opening sentence that informally, without direct quotations, introduces the topic of interest that will follow; a brief summary, with a couple of sentences for each idea, of the essay’s body paragrams; and, the thesis.

The thesis, the most important

part of the introduction paragraph, and arguably, the entire essay itself, must be constructed from the student’s research. The thesis statement is determined by the number of body paragraphs the student wishes to include; to determine this number, students should consult their notes, and try to find areas of similarity and difference within their research. They should try to be as specific and clear as possible when outlining their ideas, and aim for three topics, which correspond to the overarching thesis. Keep in mind that there may be some instances where three topics cannot be found, and two topics are more suitable. Once the subtopics have been decided upon, student should incorporate them into their thesis in a way that points to a certain claim. For example, the argument that topics A, B, and C serve as evidence that a claim, D, is true or false. Having decided upon your thesis, you can move onto the body paragraph portions of your essay. Each body paragraph will follow a similar layout, with the introduction of the topic, textual evidence conveying the student’s intentions, and a concluding sentence that wraps everything up.

In undergraduate studies, students will seldom be experts upon any given topic, and will not have the credentials to make scholarly assertions. Thus, it is critical that students reinforce their claims with the direct findings of scholars, making sure to properly cite, with an associated “works cited” page at the end of the essay, where they have found such information. The last part of the essay, the conclusion, entails a sort of inverse introduction. Students should try to restate their thesis differently than they did in their introduction, and also repeat their subtopics differently. To end off the conclusion paragraph, students should write closing remarks, a few sentences discussing any possible implications or further contemplations on what had been presented in the essay.

4. Tidying up

When students have completed steps one through three in their entirety, they can now begin to polish their work. This means giving their essay a thorough review by checking for any spelling or grammar mistakes, and ensuring that all style requirements have been met. This might include deciding between MLA or APA style, choosing to double-space your essay, or adding page numbers. Once the student is satisfied with their work, they can submit it to their professors. Essay-writing can be a stressful experience, but, given the right preparation, dedication, and application, students can be sure to achieve success. Good luck, and happy writing, Glendon!

L’ours et le bûcheron

Patatras !

Since you’ve been gone

Since you’ve been gone, much has changed, yet a lot has stayed the same.

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve done a lot more self care. You name it, and I’m doing it: skin care, hair care, nail care.

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve developed a habit, an obsession with getting my nails done. I’m always thinking up new colours and designs I want to try.

You would hate how long they’ve gotten, but I love it.

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve been seeing my friends more. We go out and try new things, or just repeat old favourites. I went to a concert for the first time!

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve taken up some hobbies, and learned new skills.

I’m trying to learn to roller-skate; it’s been a rocky start, but I know I’ll get there eventually!

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve improved my language ability in my second and third languages. I’m learning a fourth language, Portuguese, and I’m actually pretty good, at least according to Duolingo.

Since you’ve been gone, I’ve met a lot of new people.

I’ve made friends with some, and learned from others what I don’t want from relationships.

I know what healthy relationships look like, and I’ve made deeper connections with people I knew before, too.

Since you’ve been gone, I have gained a newfound perspective toward how people treat me, an attentiveness to kindness and care; it makes life feel softer.

Since you’ve been gone, I have gained a new confidence in myself, and in my abilities.

I look in the mirror and think, “Damn, girl!”

It sounds narcissistic, but it’s not.

Since you’ve been gone, I have learned what genuine love looks and feels like.

That you can have multiple soulmates, and that some of your soulmates aren’t romantic partners.

Fuck, sometimes I wish you were here so you could see it!

See all the changes, the new attitude and outlook I have on life.

I know you can’t be here, though: these changes wouldn’t have been possible with you.

If they were, then they would have happened a long time ago.

I wish I could have brought you along for the ride.

I wish you could have grown and changed with me.

I hope you would feel proud of all these changes, and not mad.

I know you hate change.

I hope you are learning to welcome it and embrace it; it’s the only way to grow.

Julie Mango Blossoms

(Trigger Warning): Mentions of selfharm and suicide

Julie Mango’s birth name is Juliet Angelique Bodley. Her father gave her the nickname ‘Julie Mango’ as a child, because she often picked and ate mangoes from a “Julie Mango” tree at the front of their yard. Julie Mango is an actress, content creator and influencer, professional speaker, mistress of ceremonies (MC), recording artist, and mental health advocate. She was born in Jamaica, and grew up in the parishes of Clarendon and Manchester. Her parents divorced when she was just nine years old, and shortly afterwards, Bodley and her mother relocated to the parish of Manchester. She rose to fame November 2020, after performing and posting a short skit that compared Jamaican and American styles of demonstrating praise and worship at church. The number of views were astronomical, and the feedback was favourable. Her followers wanted more content from her, and she was more than happy to deliver. Bodley’s hilarious content highlighting the average Jamaican way of life, along with her usage of Jamaican patois, quickly cemented her as a top-tier social media personality.

In 2021, Mango resigned from her 9-to-5 job working as an engineer in Missouri, in the United States of America. Her leap of faith in quitting her job at 40 to pursue her passions has paid off, generating numerous accolades. Mango was the Social Media Ambassador for Jamaica’s 60th Year of Independence, and was awarded the Best Jamaican Social Media Personality of 2022 by Jamaicans.com. She has also demonstrated her versatility by hosting the Chairman’s Dinner event with international superstar Shaggy, as well as speaking on the topic of “Content Evolution: Changing Content for a Changing World” as a panelist at the inaugural staging of the Island Music Conference (IMC), held from February 8-12, 2023, in Kingston, Jamaica.

However, despite her success, Bodley has also faced personal struggles; she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and remembers self-harming by cutting herself as early as age eight, due to the pressure of constantly being compared to others. On the television program Sim Soul Sessions, she stated in an interview that, “My worth was always

measured by how well I was doing in comparison to another child…or kid…or even sometimes another adult. If there was ever a time I was weighed, measures, and found wanting, then I would believe that my value had dropped…so I didn’t know how to value myself from an early, early, early age.” Mango also explained that her reason for speaking about this was not to attack her mother, but rather to educate others, and encourage positive parenting within their society.

Bodley has also faced relationship challenges throughout the course of her life, as a result of her mother’s words painting a gloomy picture of her father in her mind. At the time, her mother was going through an excruciating divorce, and was not conscious that her words were adversely impacting Bodley’s perception of her father, and men in general. This perception accused her father of choosing his second wife and other children over her, and caused Bodley to adopt an ‘absentee father mentality.’ However, she acknowledges that when they shared a home as a family, her father continued to make an effort to be in her life and support her, and is the only parent that she remembers openly saying, “Julie, I love you.” Mango’s confusion spurred her belief that men would begin a relationship with a loving manner, then suddenly abandon their partner. The resulting, overwhelming sense of devaluation continued to impact her well into her adult life, as she began seeking validation in men, affecting her relationships and obscuring her outlook on love. Relationship challenges drove her to attempt suicide twice.

Through years of therapy, Mango has learned self-life, and has a new perspective toward life. She now wants to continue living, instead of dying. She continues to work towards becoming more self-confident, breaking her habit of people-pleasing, and improving herself overall. She stresses the importance of therapy on all her platforms, and on morning television show CVM at Sunrise in 2022, stated that, “Your hobbies cannot cure you…your hobbies are there for you to enjoy life and for you to heal on a daily basis, but if you have a mental illness, your hobbies cannot heal you, you have to go through talk therapy so that you can enjoy your hobbies… If you have a mental illness the hobby will just serve as a distraction…Look how many great athletes have killed themselves… Your hobby doesn’t heal you, it is whatever kind of therapy that will heal you and then when you are healed you are able to properly serve your hobby to the world, you’re able to healthily enjoy your hobby and not

become a slave to your hobby…” In the same vein, she spoke about her debut single, “Otherside,” an Afrobeat-inspired song. The single is a mental health advocacy anthem, reflecting on Mango’s mental health struggle, including the untreatable facets of the past, and the treatable aspects of the present. She also uses the single to reflect on how content creators and other individuals may seem alright online, but secretly

suffer in silence from their deteriorating mental health.

Now that you ‘truly know Julie Mango,’ you can watch, like, comment, and share her content on your platform of choice. Mango can be found at @iamjuliemango on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter; I promise you won’t regret it!

Le Monde, La Mode

Section Editor: Campus Life, Arts and Entertainment & Metropolis

People always want to be on trend or in fashion. With the newest season of the Netflix show Next in Fashion, we are able to see the upcoming and latest trends for clothing amongst celebrities and within the fashion industry. This show shares the stories and perspectives of the next in line fashion designers who are fighting to win $200,000 and a collaboration with Rent the Runway. Season Two is hosted by fashion designer Tan France, recognized for his work on the show Queer Eye and fashion-forward supermodel Gigi Hadid, with guest judges in each episode ranging from Hailey Bieber to Donatella Versace.

This show, especially in its newest season, highlights three key points that are also important within the fashion industry: sustainability, the coming and going of trends, and the drive for one’s dreams are emphasized in this competitive series. In the episode “Thrift,” there was a focus on the need for sustainability, as the designers were prompted to reuse old clothing to create a new and modern take.

The judges always highlighted the need to stay on trend, and praised pieces that re-invented trends, or were perceived as the next “It” piece to sell out at every store. In the episode “Everything Old is New,” the prompt encourages the designers to review old trends and create a modern twist on them. From the 50s to the 90s, each designer took inspiration from the fashion of these eras, and created new designs and pieces. Some designers faced challenges with this prompt, struggling to create pieces that resembled the designated era appropriately. By the end of the series, there were only three remaining designers in the finale.

Overall, this show was great, inspiring me to try new things, and sparking my interest in new opportunities, including fashion design. Perhaps my new designs will ‘glam up’ the Glendon hallways in the future! If you need inspiration and motivation to try something new, I highly recommend Next in Fashion. Who knows: maybe you have what it takes to be ‘next in fashion!’

Les avantages des siestes

Anna Noumtinis

Daan Go Cake Lab.

Buying Vintage, and Thrifting: Combating Consumerism, and Looking Good! (cont.)

is an inevitable component of not only economics, but human nature, uncontained and unchecked competition engulfs and closes the doors of smaller players (i.e. local mom-and-pop shops), which still possess a distinctive value. Monopolization of industry and exclusive control thus prevents any meaningful growth for any party not already sizable in any particular economic sector. Due to this, global socioeconomic conditions remain imperfect.

In order to realize purposeful change, workers need to be paid livable wages, and afforded suitable places of work. Greater restrictions must be placed upon the wealthy, and their ability expand, and smaller spaces must be granted sufficient space for growth, without being overrun by the aforementioned wealthy. In doing so, I believe that a more equitable society can be created for all, not just a lopsided one for some. Why must some people have so much, while most have so little — when will enough, be enough?

On a lighter note, I have come to the concepts of buying vintage and thrifting! Buying vintage and going thrifting are amazing ways to not only support local businesses, but to be sustainable, save money, and dress awesome! I am guilty of envisioning a version of myself that lived in the past, and daydreaming about what it would have been like to grow up in a John Hughes classic. In comparison to reality, the fictional realm, and the very

real past that it may have been associated with, seems more inviting. Life in the past, though no stranger to adversity, appears carefree and simple, rife with possibility and freedom. Perhaps it’s my rosecoloured glasses speaking, or the hint of cynicism that comes with age, but I feel that life today just doesn’t feel or look like it did in the past; by this, I largely refer to the 1950s-1990s, and even extending into the early 2000s. Nevertheless, while the past has surely come and gone, a certain part of it has begun to make a comeback — the popularity of vintage/retro clothing.

Vintage/retro clothing styles have a degree of eccentricity about them. Unconventional by today’s standards, clothing from the mid-late twentieth-century was marked by unique designs, logos, colour schemes, cuts, fits, and durability, which simulate and embody a much different era. Far fewer vintage pieces were produced in their time, compared to today’s fashion industry, and many pieces did not stand the test of time, becoming lost, thrown away, destroyed, or inordinately blemished. Hence, the remaining vintage pieces entail a sense of individuality and history, as though you are inheriting the fabric in all its glory. Vintage clothing also offers individualism in a different way, enabling people to better display their personality. In life, a person’s body is perhaps one of the few things, if not the only one, that is ever truly their own. Thus, how people choose to

carry and present themselves to the world speaks volumes about the kind of person that they are, and the kind of person they aspire to be.

The vast array of remarkable vintage pieces encourages people to stray from the ordinary, and define themselves as distinctive from the rest. While vintage commerce still remains niche in nature, I urge you to broaden your horizons, and try something new! The beauty of shopping vintage is that you never know what you might find, and you never know if you might find it again. Vintage shopping in Toronto has never been easier, as there are more and more vintage stores popping up around the city, with an ever-growing vintage scene to explore. Some of my favourites include Throwback Vault (with locations on Queen St West, and Bloor St West), The Clarendon Trading Company (with locations in Markham, Scarborough, and Yorkdale Mall), and Plato’s Closet (with locations across the GTA). These vintage stores offer high quality, unique items, but may be more on the expensive side (yet, on the whole, still affordable). Other places to find vintage, or previously-loved, clothing, are thrift stores. Thrift stores like the Salvation Army, Value Village (including the boutique on Queen St West), and much of Kensington Market, offer great pieces for often much cheaper prices. Closer to Glendon, York University now has a new student-run thrifting initiative, selling

pieces through their Instagram account (@thriftyyorku), and sporadic in-person pop-up shops at Keele campus! Vintage and thrift markets have thus never been more accessible and inviting than they are at this present moment.

In a corporate world that is centred on the mass production of commodities, there has been a turn to the idea of “fast fashion,” with the outsourced production of an abundance of cheaply-made clothing to underdeveloped countries. “Fast fashion,” with its profuse environmental and social output and impact, provides rapidly changing styles of clothing available quickly, and affordably. These pieces of clothing are produced in such immense quantities that excess garments often end up in landfills, and their toxic, colourful dyes, amongst many other devastating environmental concerns, seep through the stitches into global water supplies. When people buy vintage and thrift their clothing, contributing to the recycling of wearable material, they challenge the consumerist, capitalist, corporate mentality — investing their money not just in small businesses, but the environment, workers, and themselves. Thus, shopping vintage and thrifting are two seemingly miniscule ways in which people from all walks of life can be more sustainably-minded, support small enterprises, and, at the same time, look good. Happy shopping, Glendon!

Lashgate, #BeautyTok Burnout, & De-influencing: Trying to Establish Mental Ad-Block

Section Editor: Campus Life, Arts and Entertainment & Metropolis

This January, TikTok’s largest beauty controversy in recent years hit the fan: Lashgate.

Mikayla Noguiera is a familiar personality to anyone who’s perused #BeautyTok, favoured by the algorithm for creating content people felt was blunt, straightfoward, and honest. She had been sitting at nearly 14 million followers, before things came crashing down. Noguiera had already taken a break from TikTok, after her complaints about working as an influencer were criticized and memed by those who found her comments ‘out of touch’ and ‘tone-deaf.’ Some also felt that her comments had been taken out of their original context, where she was responding to a hate comment urging her to get a 9-to5 job.

Nearly six months later, in a review and paid ad for the latest L’Oréal mascara, she appeared to put on false eyelashes between clips, which inflamed viewer sentiments once more. Comically enough, Mikayla states that her lashes “look just like false lashes” to start the review; however, this was not enough to stem the wave of negativity. Criticism poured in from casual watchers, previously-adoring fans, other influencers, companies, and previously obsolete beauty creators, who took the opportunity to chastise her for what appeared to be blatant lies.

As TikTok worked on wearing out the #lashgate tag, with many videos under the tag sitting at over one million views each, and likely more than 100 million total, discussions popped up, with many questioning the authenticity of these socalled ‘honest influencers.’ This set the stage for de-influencing to crawl up the ranks in popularity.

De-influencing began as an effort to combat the overconsumption spreading across social media, but especially on TikTok. Initially, it sought to do exactly what it sounded like: to stop convincing people to buy more, do more, have more, and be more, and instead, to remind people that the direction social media offers isn’t always direction we should

Lashgate,

take or trust. It took various forms, and rooted itself as a trend not only in the beauty-sphere, but in fitness, skincare, and other lifestyle TikTok niches — slowly but surely, however, it began to morph.

Instead of clips about ‘products you don’t need,’ or ‘de-influencing viral makeup,’ more and more videos under the tag became, ‘let’s de-influence some … and tell you what to get instead,’ or, ‘buy this, not that!’ Quickly, what began as an anti-over-consumption discussion evolved into just another way to get commenters begging for advice, asking what to buy if the influencer disliked a certain lip oil, were there any dupes, could they share their top 10? The shift opened the eyes of many to the irony of the ‘trend,’ in receiving directions and declarations from influencers about what is or isn’t worth it, and how, in the end, de-influencing was just influencing, repackaged.

Unfortunate as it is, on most social networks set up to optimize clicks, conversions, and buys, we will always see trends working against those overconsuming tendencies restructured into something aligned with the goals of ‘algorithm.’ Luckily, though, people are still trying to help themselves and others avoid falling into the trap of re-influencing. To deinfluence yourself instead, try setting up a few of the following ‘protective measures.’ Be more critical of what reviews you trust.

Especially on TikTok, reviewers don’t usually provide enough information to actually assess the necessity, utility, and overall quality of a product. There’s just not enough time, and often, they’re just there to sell you the product as fast as possible, grab their commission, and rave about the next product a company holds up

#BeautyTok Burnout, &

De-influencing: Trying to Establish Mental Ad-Block (cont.)

a carrot for. If a reviewer is raving about a foundation before they’ve blended out their swatch, then open up the description and sift through for a ‘#CompanyPartner,’ ‘#ad,’ or try and recall whether you’ve seen the same reaction from that influencer in most, if not all, of their videos. Though you don’t necessarily have to act a meerkat and sit constantly on alert, if you start to feel that itch to grab a product you didn’t know existed until your ‘FYP’ enlightened you, consider taking a more critical approach to the reviews you watch as you deliberate giving in. Consider this: is your collection of influencer items already gargantuan? Consider going on a ‘no-’ or ‘low-buy.’

Contrary to what the exorbitant collections of YouTubers and TikTokers try to convince you, almost no one needs more than two, or maybe three, open mascaras at a time, every baby-pink blush that exists, or all nine shades of a lipgloss that a brand offers. If you have enough products that your drawers are spilling, or your makeup bag has grown into a labyrinth, it might be time to try a ‘no-buy.’

A ‘no-buy’ is exactly what it sounds like — committing to not purchasing any new products for a certain interval, usually a month, three months, or even a year. A ‘nobuy’ can also be limited to certain products, like a ‘foundation no-buy.’ If these options present a challenge, consider a ‘low-buy’ instead, limiting yourself to a reasonable number of purchases within your chosen interval. Think of limits like no more than two new foundations a year, or only one mascara every three months at most. It can also help to keep a written wishlist, and check back at the end of every low-buy to see what you still feel like you want, and what turned out to have been a trend that you’re no longer fascinated by. It can help

you understand your ‘cravings,’ and in turn, handle them better, too.

Try your hand at a ‘Project Pan!’

To avoid wastefulness and the potential neglect of products you already have, turn using up products into a game! Choose a few products that you want to use more consistently, and start tracking your usage. Take a photo of the amount of product left when you start, and set it beside your usual morning items. A month or two later, take a photo of your progress, and continue this practice in regular intervals, either until you truly grow bored and need a break, or until you feel you’ve made a sizable dent and are ready to shift your focus.

Join online communities of others working on and encouraging one another towards more sustainable beauty habits.

Communities like the many Project Pan groups on Facebook, or r/ MakeupRehab on Reddit, which discuss their project pans, ‘low-buys,’ ‘no-buys,’ and more, can be helpful. These communities provide advice and motivation for sticking to your goals, and new ways to approach makeup, so it can ‘spark joy’ again. Others have created their own project pan Instagram accounts to connect with others and share their progress, or opt to watch

content creators like Kimberly Clark and Abby Williamson, who create ‘anti-hauls,’ the (arguably more effective) predecessor of de-influencing.

Really, though, the simplest start is reflection! Whether you’re a makeup aficionado, a skincare junkie, or just prone to a few too many parasocial relationships than anyone can condone, it can help to just sit down, take a moment, and think about what kind of impact the content that you watch has on your lifestyle. It’s easy to forget how much media can get into our heads, especially when we’re so used to being advertised at in every clip we hear. Though it may be impossible to remain entirely ‘de-influenced’ in any society, but especially ours, the former is an important thing to keep in mind.

Take some time to slow down and really assess what you’re spending your time watching, and consider whether swapping out and unfollowing some companies or creators might be healthy for your head and for your wallet. Maybe try out your first project pan, or enroll yourself in ‘Makeup Rehab’ while you’re at it! Whatever you choose, I wish you happy scrolling in the meantime, Glendon!
