Finding My Groove Through Walking

I’ll be the first person to admit; I’m terrible at keeping to a consistent workout schedule. I hate getting sweaty and then going about my day afterwards, so a shower post-workout is a necessity. I’m notorious for going on week or month-long workout kicks, and then stopping altogether when I get bored of lifting weights or long-distance running. I’m also your typical elementary school cross country and track athlete that never became quite good enough to advance beyond the area and regional competitions. I wasn’t bad by any means, but I was never going to be a track star, if you catch my drift. In high school, I completed my physical education credits, took one extra fitness class in Grade 10, and never looked back at working out seriously. When the

pandemic hit in 2020, I decided to try a number of workout challenges, including Chloe Ting, and all sorts of YouTube workout videos. I fell off the wagon of each and every single one of these challenges within a week.

If you’re in this boat of a serial lack of motivation toward working out for fun or health in any capacity, I totally understand and sympathise. My personal issue is that in reality, getting my heart pumping through working out, running, or taking a long walk is the key to a good night’s rest and a focused mind for school and work. So how could I combat this laziness, in order to consistently exercise for my own mood and well-being? I’ve discovered that the key thing here is to make exercise as easy as possible for myself. I have always enjoyed walking, so what was stopping me from making this my main source of exercise? The big realisation I’ve had to

come to is this: it’s okay to try out trendy workouts that are all the rage on social media, especially if they keep you engaged and provide you with enough newness to captivate your interest. The Internet gave me ample ideas for how to elevate my walking workouts; what has worked for me in 2022 and 2023? When I first started working out a little more seriously in November, I focused on one exercise in particular: the 12-3-30. You might have heard of this workout, a treadmill routine that went viral on TikTok and Instagram, as every fit young person touted it as their favourite. The workout itself is very simple; set your treadmill to an incline of 12 and a speed of 3, then walk for 30 minutes, holding onto the treadmill as little as possible. I’ve heard varied reviews, with some stating they didn’t expect how difficult the workout was, especially

Coucou, Glendon !

It’s almost unbelievable that the winter semester has passed by so quickly! I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable Reading Week, full of all the best things in life, including sleep, travel, and reading for leisure. I’m also wishing everyone luck with their midterm examinations and assignments in the coming weeks, for all those courses that saved their evaluations for March. Remember to take time to breathe, and go for a cold, wintry walk when you need a break!

In the spirit of bringing back the music recommendations, February has been home to quite the eclectic mix. I’ve been on a bit of a TikTok kick lately, espe-

Falling in love with psychology

On a cold, bright Friday morning, I got to re-experience the emotion that led me to choose a degree in psychology. I was talking to one of my professors; when he mentioned his wife, I found myself asking how they met, and how long they had been married. This snowballed into more questions about his life, which usually happens when I talk to people. I always have a lot of questions, because I am trying to understand where people are coming from, why they say what they say, and why they use certain gestures or expressions. I want to know people’s stories! Especially how they came to be the person standing before me.

That is exactly what psychology is about. It looks at the biology that chemically makes up a person, as well as the external environment, both physical and social, that the person lives in, in order to determine how these interactions create the unique and intricate networks that form a person. Even those with limited knowledge in psychology agree that the brain is a very powerful organ. It is in charge of instructing the human body, but also listens to the body’s signals, to better understand the context of the situation. It is this ever flowing bidi-

rectional communication between the body and the brain that help make up a person. It is how we learn associations, rules, and exceptions to those rules.

Our psyche makes us who we are, and I have always found that fascinating, to the point where I wanted to know exactly how our brains work. In Grade 11, I decided that I wanted to study psychology, after taking an introductory course that looked at anthropology, psychology, and sociology. To absolutely no one’s surprise, psychology was my favourite! I fell in love with the idea that one course could use theories to help explain and predict behaviour. I have continued my studies in psychology, and I am very fortunate that I still enjoy learning about it, even after all this time. I will tell you though, there are days when I feel too tired to do my readings, or feel unmotivated to study. There are other days when I am so focused and lost in the grind, that it feels like I am working just to get everything done, and forget to enjoy the content. It can be so easy to lose track of time and get lost in the day-to-day hustle of life, and those are the days when I ask myself if I really want a degree in this subject. But I do. No matter how many times I get fed up with my assignments or feel too tired to read, I know that psychology is the degree for me. Psychology is one of the few subject areas that bring together skills and knowledge from other fields like math, sciences, writing, reading, and more. As a field of study, it has a little bit of everything, just like peo-

ple. We might be better at one thing over another, and have certain preferences, but we still have a unique mix within us! I think psychology will always be my baby. I love what I learn, because it allows me to put the pieces of the puzzle together, and really understand others. I know I am lucky to enjoy my program of study, as not everyone shares the same experience. For those who might be having doubts about their degree, I encourage

you to look at the subject at face value; set all the tests, assignments and work aside, and ask yourself if you find the subject interesting. If you do, then just remember that sometimes we get lost in the routine of things, and need to take a step back to see the bigger picture. And if you don’t find the subject interesting? Well, maybe it’s time to find a new subject that you’re passionate about!

cut fruit

my mother and i sit peeling oranges side by side in a sunlit kitchen. we say nothing: heads bowed, guard up, little given away, lack of idle conversation and comfortable silence abound. she carefully separates the rind from the fruit, careful like she is about baking the perfect sponge or keeping the countertops spotless, cautious like she is about using big words or speaking without a long thought process, then begins the slow process of separating the pith from the fruit, gentle fingers just barely denting the sphere.

i dig my fingers into the orange with careless abandon, fingers sinking through rind and pith both, and into the juicy fruit, in my excitement at getting to eat oranges and my impatience at getting to the good part, careless like i am about my possessions and my open heart, impatient like my attention span for piano practice and child’s talk. reckless.

without a word she piles segments on my plate forming a neat stack, each side rising in sync: left, right, left, right membrane flesh and membrane, membrane flesh and membrane, and again, just like clockwork until only the thinnest slivers remain scattered across her plate in asymmetry.

we are different and the same. no, we always have been different and the same; body type, demeanour, expectations preferences, likes, dislikes. i understand her better than when i was young but there is something fundamentally different in our wiring something that keeps us wary, on the very fringe of understanding the other we gravitate towards one another, and shy away from each other, all in the same breath.

a cresting mountain of differences lays between us oh, we are just skimming the surface.

Mother Stands for Comfort

A fine, bare river winds a part through her kinks atop her weighty head resplendent with dreadlocks that flatten as she ties a silk scarf around them.

Her sleeping face gently volleys light to my eager eyes. A preauricular pit, below, a delicate collarbone— a white cotton nightgown comes down to cover her chest.

Her scars, dry like sea salt, all over her legs, down to her hallux, and there’s a scar on her spine at the base of the neck that I notice as I turn to shut off the lamp.

There is peace in the way my fetal position fits against her supine body, delight in this private familial intimacy under the sheets, this slow choreography, flow of our bodies as we sleep.

She is fresh water to me, her skin my velvet.

I rest my head on her knees, hear the language of weariness sense the hidden strength I hunger for: beautiful strength in the hidden infrastructure of bones.

Anna Noumtinis

Bilingual Journalist

When I am feeling lost and uncertain of where I am going, or when I am worried about something, I light a candle. There is something so soothing and inspiring about watching that little flame dance, so energetic and strong. When something good happens, and I feel very happy and grateful, and I want to show my gratitude or pay my respects, I light a candle.

I feel like the flame dances along with the rhythm of my happiness.

Somehow, when I light a candle, I feel the stress pour out of me and the world feels like it is sparkly and new. When I need guidance or a sign, I light a candle, because it clears my mind and relaxes it enough that I become more attentive to my environment.

I feel a sense of inner peace that carries over for hours and even days at a time, when I light a candle.

Lighting a candle in my safe place makes everything feel okay. It helps remind me that no matter how bad things get or how stressed I am, that if I take a few minutes to breathe and think about something other than my problems, the answers will be right in front of me.

Auntie Donna, What A Planka!

Donna Gowe was once known by her customers as “The Cake Lady,” because she always baked cakes and puddings during the Christmas and Easter seasons. She sold these goods from her house at 99 Mountain View Lane, a stone’s throw from a gully in the ghetto of Mountain View, Kingston, Jamaica. Typically, people from the ghettos of Jamaica are seen as impoverished, illiterate, and unable to find success, due to systemic inequalities on the island. But in less than five years, this seasonal, female baker has grown in leaps and bounds, evolving into a corporate brand ambassador, social media content creator and influencer, actress, and award-winning philanthropist. Her chatty, vivacious, no-nonsense demeanour are secondary elements driving her success, but her major superpower is her heart of gold.

In the years prior to the recent pandemic, Gowe would often post photos and videos on social media of her cakes, puddings, and other delectable Jamaican dishes that she had prepared. Hope Nugent, an Instagram follower of Gowe’s, wanted to support her business from the United States of America, and sent Gowe money to pay for some of her products, asking her to donate them to those in need. Gowe donated the puddings to the elderly in her community, using her smartphone to record the individuals receiving them as evidence. When technical issues prevented the videos from being sent to Nugent on WhatsApp, Gowe publicly posted them to her Instagram account instead. The videos received overwhelming support, and many others sent in donations, requesting that Gowe use these funds to continue helping those in need. From that day onwards, Gowe has used her smartphone to engage in what she calls “sister transparency,” positively transforming the charity landscape in Jamaica.

Today, Donna “The Cake Lady” Gowe is affectionately known as “Auntie Donna” or the “Planka Boss” by her loyal fans, known as the “Plankatarians” worldwide. The moniker Auntie Donna springs from her care for the wellbeing of others, like a favourite auntie. Planka Boss comes from her feisty and “chip head” personality when dealing with anyone who opposes her, or tries to tarnish her reputation. This also references her popular slang, “What

a Planka!,” as well as her principles about how to meet the objectives of the “Good Deeds Charity Program” she operates. Gowe is bold, and has been known to get verbally involved with charity donors, recipients, and even her own highly-praised team, when her principles are not respected. However, in recent months, she has become more mindful of how her responses may hurt others, developing various communication strategies in order to uphold her policies in a less aggressive manner.

Gowe has been accused of bias by those who misunderstand her intentions, as she does not automatically distribute the funds received from a donor to all the recipients of her charity program equally, unless directly instructed to do so. Instead, she features the stories and basic needs of possible recipients on her social media, with viewers able to decide who they wanted the donations to go towards on her program. These initiatives have been known to mushroom into the building of high-quality, furnished concrete houses, home renovations, support with groceries, business grants, or tuition payments for recipients. Auntie Donna describes herself as a woman who is “Boastcious-stocious,” refusing to give her recipients lower quality items just because they are marginalized. In other words, she is stylist, proud, and likes properly-made goods, meaning she will not provide anything that she would not approve for herself personally, if she was a recipient of charity. In the past, she has rejected dingy clothing and shoes for children that have been donated to her.

Besides being a devoted Christian who unapologetically discusses her faith, Auntie Donna also wholeheartedly believes that she must always provide proactive transparency. She frequently reiterates her slogan during her videos: “Only Donna Marie Gowe can bring down Donna Marie Gowe. Nobody else can do this because this woman is not an idiot!” As the Planka Boss, she carefully follows the instructions of donors with regards to how funds should be dispersed to recipients of her charity program. She then uses “sister transparency” to post public videos and photos as evidence of this process. For example, when meeting recipients of her program, she states each donor’s name, as well as the amount they have donated. Gowe also publicly posts copies of the donors’ names and receipts from items purchased for recipients. As a result, millions of dollars around the world have passed through her hands, assisting recipients of her charity program without corruption or conflict of interest.

Auntie Donna’s Nyam Bad cakes

and puddings continue to be a staple in Jamaica and the Caribbean diaspora globally. Many times, she has expressed her appreciation to her loyal “Plankatarians,” who have supported her business ventures and made her a self-made millionaire. She also makes a fast-selling, healthy juice called Triple Blend. Auntie Donna is a culinary

genius, but terrible at remembering names and pronouncing basic words. This shortfall has become one of her key strengths, as these mishaps have spawned memes on several social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, driving traffic to her social media platforms and other Continued on PAGE 7

businesses. Her t-shirt line was developed based on her tongue twisting phrases and never-ending slang factory, which she belts out during her jovial vlogs on social media.

Despite her successes, Gowe is often plagued by attacks from critics who defame her character by blasting her verbally online, and accuse her of being a scammer. Sometimes, they lambast her as being “the big broad back, big forehead woman who mashup charity.” However, Auntie Donna continues to soar above the negativities by turning them into positives. She has clapped back at critics calling her goods nasty and awful-tasting by branding them as “Nyam Bad,” meaning “taste bad”

in Jamaican patois. One of her top-selling large size “Nyam Bad” product lines of Christmas cakes was named “Double Decker,” as a response to critics’ attempts to body shame her by comparing her to the famous double-decker buses in London.

Countless “Plankatarians” have mentioned that they first discovered Auntie Donna through videos of others online cursing her, describing her as an inhumane and derogatory person. This led them to Gowe’s content, business ventures, kind-heartedness, and magnetic personality. “Plankatarians” applaud her as being the Jamaican “Mother Theresa” and “Queen of Charity.” Normally, 2,000 to 4,000 people watch her live videos on social media, with viewing numbers skyrocketing afterwards with people who were unable to watch in real time. Her main YouTube channel, Donna Gowe, has surpassed 100,000 sub-

Elle a ensuite chanté d’autres chansons, notamment « Where Have You Been », « Only Girl (In the World) », « We Found Love », et un remix de sa chanson « Rude Boy » de 2010.

scribers, with her first YouTube plaque celebrating this milestone incoming. Several reputable corporations have signed her as a brand ambassador, and she now shares manager Romeich with reggae and dancehall pop superstar Shenseea.

Gowe continues to grow and evolve, pausing her hardcore charity projects to renovate and expand her house, as well as focus more on her businesses and self-care. Since then, she has done charity sporadically, only engaging if she sees a situation that resonates with her call to action, including helping students to pay off their tuition using her personal funds, or through donations. In February 2023, Auntie Donna ran a five-hour marathon that raised over $20,000 CAD to assist a promising eighteen-year-old male from Jamaica, who hopes to attend university in Canada. She has always openly expressed that she

is not paid by charity, and has never pocketed any of the recipient’s donations. However, she agrees that charity has brought many people to know and support her business ventures. She has invested in her growing business by purchasing state of the art equipment, and building a bakery at her renovated house, which she has called a “Womansion.” Gowe has beautified the landscape of 99 Mountain View Lane to compliment her house, by planting flower, and building and painting a new wall, which has established a visible landmark of pride and joy in the ghetto.

You can follow Auntie Donna on Facebook at Teaching You My Cooking Skills, on Instagram at @donna_gowe, on YouTube at Donna Gowe or Planka Boss, or her website at donnagowe.co (reopening March 10th).

Embody your Inner Irish LuckCelebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Toronto!

Green, green, and more green. From the shamrock to the leprechaun, and everything green in between (including beer, and the Chicago river), St. Patrick’s Day is a true celebration of colours — or actually just one colour specifically. It began in 1631 as a religious feast day, an ecclesiastical holiday, usually conjoined with the consumption of food and drinks, devoted to the commemoration of a person or event of interest, in honour of Saint Patrick by the Christian Church. March 17 marks a celebratory day of Irish culture, festivities, and having fun!

Historically, St. Patrick’s Day, commemorating its namesake, was a day that, perhaps, encapsulated greater religious meaning than its contemporary counterpart. Saint Patrick, a fifth-century missionary in Ireland, is, according to Britannica, credited with the popular introduction of Christianity to the Emerald Isle. Although he was not the first, he was definitely the most influential Christian missionary in the area. Saint Patrick became a legendary Irish figure by the conclusion of the seventh century, and soon found himself the patron saint (a saint dedicated to the protection or guidance of a person or place) of Ireland. While his aforementioned feast day was ecclesiastically assigned in recognition of the date of his death in 461 (a date widely accepted, but not assuredly known), it was not until widespread eighteenth-century Irish emigration, especially to the United States, as per Britannica, that the holiday began to take on a familiar, largely secularized shape.

American cities housing large numbers of Irish immigrants, including Boston and New York, traditionally held the most sizable celebrations — with the former having hosted its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, and the latter, in 1762. This being said, however, the colour green, a notable component of St. Patrick’s Day revelry, was not initially the festive colour of choice. Time Magazine notes that it would take until the year 1798, during the Irish Rebellion — an uprising against British rule

in Ireland — that green became the official colour demarcation of the day. Before then, blue, displayed in early depictions of Saint Patrick himself (Smithsonian Magazine), in the Royal Court, and on ancient Irish flags, was the colour associated with Saint Patrick’s Day.

Should you choose to sport green, or atypical, yet historically accurate, blue garments this St. Patrick’s Day, you will not have to travel too far to join in on the fun. Like its American peers, the City of Toronto also has a rich history surrounding the anticipated mid-March celebration. With immigration to Canada beginning as early as the seventeenth-century, the Irish have certainly cemented their presence in the country. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade in Canada was held in Montreal in 1824, and by the 1850s, Toronto began to hold its own parades in the name of the Irish icon. Yet, celebrations in Toronto would not fare well for long. As a result of heightened religious and sectarian violence in the city between Catholic and Protestant individuals, St. Patrick’s Day festivities were banned in the City of Toronto in 1878, and were not reinstated until 110 years later, in 1988! Nonetheless, the Irish have been long-standing members of the now cosmopolitan Toronto, contributing to the diverse composition of the city that many people, from many different places, call home.

Hence, in anticipation of the holiday, I encourage readers to mark their calendars! With St. Patrick’s Day 2023 just around the corner, I have compiled a shortlist of events happening in and around Toronto:

1. St. Patrick’s Day Parade - Free Commencing at 11:00 AM, on a route extending from Bloor St W & St George St to Nathan Phillips Square, the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day parade is hitting the streets on March 19! Come out, dress in green (and warmly), and enjoy the exciting spectacle!

2. Guinness SPD - Tickets required, inquire through website

An all-day St. Patrick’s Day party, complete with a pancake breakfast (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM), live bands, DJs, games, dancing, and much more. Dubbed Canada’s largest “St. Paddy’s Day” party, Guinness SPD is back this Saturday, March 18, at Rebel Nightclub on 11 Polson Street. If you’re looking to have a day, and night, of Irish-infused exhilaration, this is the place to be!

3. Best Damn Stand-Up Comedy Show - Tickets required, inquire through website, or at the door Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 (8:30 PM - 9:45 PM) on the Danforth (154 Danforth Ave), with laughs all-around, at the so-called Best Damn Stand-Up Comedy Show! Featuring three acclaimed headliners, the show will be sure to deliver a good time!

If you are looking for a more toned-down way to ring in the festive day (which may be hard to come by, given the day’s nature), great Irish restaurants and pubs are abundantly scattered throughout the city, including McVeigh’s, Grace O’Mal-

ley’s, and Dublin Calling. They all serve up some delicious Irish cuisine, and often, fantastic tunes! The Toronto Irish Film Festival is also taking place from March 24-26, if this may be more your speed, with tickets set to go on sale at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

To this end, I encourage Glendonites to try something new this St. Patrick’s Day, and immerse yourself within a culture that may be unfamiliar to you. The beauty of a city like Toronto is that uniformity is essentially non-existent, and that around every Torontonian corner, you will find something, or someone, new (or, on St. Patrick’s Day, green). Thus, for the sake of experiencing new things, why not step out of your comfort zone, and participate in all the joys and thrills that the Irish have to offer — amongst a culture you won’t soon forget.

So, whether you’ll don your green and hit the pubs, or just plan on eating a bowl of Lucky Charms this St. Patrick’s Day, may the day of the shamrock, especially with final exams looming just around the corner, bring you the best of luck!

Finding My Groove Through Walking (cont.)

with the incline set to 12, and others who found the workout too easy, even after not working out for a long time. For someone who occasionally takes long walks at a brisk pace, speed-walks the subway 2-3 times a week, and does little exercise outside of that, I found the 12-3-30 to be slightly difficult at the beginning. But after three days in a row, it became easy, a little like a walk in the park. By the end of the week, I found myself increasing the speed to 3.1 or 3.2 to further challenge myself. The only problem I found with 12-3-30 was boredom, which might be a personal issue. I’m not someone who watches television while on the treadmill, or reads books, so I found it quite monotonous to walk continuously at the same pace and incline for half an hour. There’s only so much staring off into space and deep thinking one can do while moving their legs the exact same way before it gets a tad tedious.

But lo and behold, social media came to the rescue again. I discovered @ benntheredonethat on TikTok, the account of Allie Bennett, who describes herself as the ‘ceo of the treadmill strut.’ And I’d agree! A quick look at her Linktree displays dozens of playlists labelled as ‘treadmill struts,’ each pertaining to a different artist, genre of music, or time period. So what is a treadmill strut? Not just a boring walk on the treadmill, matching your walk to one of the aforementioned playlists means that you pick a slower speed to start, and increase your speed by 0.1 each time the song changes. You can plan to be running for the final four songs, or just walking at a fast pace, depending on your level of fitness. Incline is customisable, and you can choose your starting pace depending on your height. For example, at 5’2, I generally start my strut at 2.7 or 2.8, 0.2 slower than the taller Allie, and begin a light jog at 3.5, allowing me to run for three songs to finish the workout. I keep my incline consistent, at 9 for the entirety of my time on the treadmill, which feels like hiking up a gentle hill.

You might be wondering, what made the treadmill strut more enjoyable than the 12-3-30 workout? I can say confidently that all the difference lay in the music variation. I could choose a new playlist each day, or go back to an old favourite to try to improve my speed. My absolute favourite playlist in January was the 5 Seconds of Summer treadmill strut, abbreviated as the

5SOSTS. One day, I had a difficult time pushing myself through the running portion to the end; the next day, I was back to complete the whole workout, and felt immense satisfaction when I did.

And there is absolutely no shame in taking walks, either! Even with the gym at my disposal, I still love a good walk, whether it be a short walk to the bakery down the street for a pastry and tea, or a longer walk circling through my neighbourhood after a stressful day of meetings, exams and work tasks. Always keep in mind that your walks don’t have to be the equivalent of a hike; a short walk gets you moving, improves your mood, and allows you to breathe in some fresh air. For those that find themselves dreading walking aimlessly, having a destination in mind helps, like the Starbucks five blocks away, or just to a random intersection where the house has a beautiful, blooming garden (not a chance in March in Ontario, I know, but soon!). It gets you

where you need to go, and you’ll return home knowing that you accomplished at least one thing today.

I suppose my key takeaway from my exploration into walking as a legitimate form of working out would be this: there is no shame in going on a journey to figure out what form of exercise works best for you. If working out doesn’t immediately click with your lifestyle, or keep you interested, you don’t need to give up on working out altogether. This might just mean that you have found the best way for you to do so yet! There’s nothing to stop you from trying something new, whether it’s trending or not, and your personal journey with exercise is just that: personal. So set some goals, keep a destination or end goal in mind, and keep pushing yourself! Me personally? I’m hoping to get back into long-distance running at some point in the near future, but we’ll have to see where all this walking takes me first.

Wake Up! - A Plea for Consciousness

It is about 9,380 kilometres away, and about 11 hours away by plane. Seems far, does it not? The world feels so big, and other countries seem so far from us. It is moments like these where we must lead with our hearts, and come together as a worldwide community to offer support and love to one another. Sometimes, we forget that other places exist and other situations are occurring until we turn on the news.

February 6th 2023 will forever be known as a day full of heartbreak and disconsolate sadness. Northern and Western Syria, along with Southern and Central Turkey, were impacted by a tremendous earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5-7.8. Only nine hours after this first earthquake, there was a second earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 following close behind. It is said to have taken place only 59 miles away from the first, in the Kahramanmaraş Province. Reports say over 6,000 aftershocks were recorded by the 20th of February, with some scientists staying that a few small magnitude aftershocks can be expected to continue for over a year. However, the main aftershocks that caused the strong shaking could continue throughout the next few days or weeks after the main shock. Over 50,000 deaths have occurred overall, with 122,500 injured. In Turkey, the death toll has risen to 44,218, as of February 24th Syria’s latest announced death toll is 5,914. This earthquake has been labelled as the fifth-deadliest earthquake of the 21st century, and the deadliest earthquake worldwide since the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

This natural disaster has affected more than ten provinces, destroying buildings and homes, and leaving damage repair costs of around $84.1 billion USD. Ten days after the earthquake, many search and rescue teams have been pulled back, with many Turkish authorities stating that reconstruction of what was lost must now commence. The president of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects has assessed that it would take a “considerable amount of time” to clear the debris from the quake. Government officials have stated that they wish to rebuilt the ten affected provinces within a year. However, civil defence teams, along with local councils, have pointed out that they will need about five to six months alone

to remove the demolished buildings and clean the rubble from the streets. A lack of heavy machinery could also contribute to the years it may take to reestablish what was destroyed. If the goal is to achieve all of this in just one year, we should be thinking of what we can do to support Syria and Turkey at this time.

The world is constantly in a rush, and we are often pushed to make quick decisions. Many times we feel incapable of being able to help those in need, since we are not able to help them in that exact moment. Though a few days have passed the earthquake touched down, we are still able to take steps to support these countries. This natural disaster has affected tens of thousands, and will require more than a few weeks of supportive funds and donations to help them get back on their feet.

There are many organizations around the world that are meant to help us help those who were affected by the earthquake. We can reach out to these organizations to see how we are able to donate or volunteer. Here are two organizations for your consideration:

1. CanadaHelps.org - Send Emergency Aid to Syria and Türkiye Earthquake Sites

( https://www.canadahelps.org/en/donate-to-syria-turkey-earthquake-relief/ ): This organization’s website has compiled an accessible list of hyperlinks leading to other websites where you can donate to various fundraisers, and help the communities affected by the earthquake.

2. Islamic Relief Canada - Syria Appeal ( https://www.islamicreliefcanada. org/emergencies/syria/?utm_campaign=18117883655&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_con -

tent=&utm_term=&adgroupid=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3eGfBhCeARIsACpJNU9uDfyoQWON218gveGYnOAL0pMLqn5QW03XwHqAdpRbq4xLHP97ivoaAlEHEALw_ wcB): This website is divided into various categories, enabling you to choose which situation occurring in Syria to donate to. Islamic Relief Canada puts the donations towards to help build emergency shelters, provide food support, and administer medical care. Additionally, you are able to help Syrian refugees through donations to support their hygiene and medical needs, including Syrian refugees who are also new mothers, and may require support to buy

formula and bottles.

But money is not the only way to help our affected communities. We are able to provide support to the different places; this could be through volunteering in the Turkish and Syrian communities in Canada, or even by just lending a supportive shoulder for those who have family members who were affected. This is a hard time for everyone, and sympathy and empathy go a lot further than you might think . Money isn’t the only thing we hae to offer. Beyond donating to the cause, you can help by taking time to listen to those who may be suffering from loss.
