A Trip to Washington DC to protest the Viet Nam War

October 1969: Part One

David Moulton

Pro Tem Alumnus ‘73

It is impossible to recall when exact ly we decided to drive to Washington, D.C., but it was in October of 1969. There was a poster that publicized the event, and we had discussed the idea in the Pro Tem offices, then located on the ground floor of Glendon Hall. It was a rather spontaneous decision, but we were able to put the pieces together fairly quickly.

The protest was scheduled for the evening of Wednesday Octo ber 15th. David Starbuck had a car, an American Motors Rambler as I recall, and he drove to Kingston where we were to meet Andy Michalski’s broth er, who also had a vehicle. Graham Muir, Marilyn Smith, and I hitchhiked to

Kingston. In those days, you were able to hitch rides on the 401. We had sev eral rides, but the one I remember was a salesman for Goodyear Tire; he was very friendly, and yet so “establishment” in my young eyes.

Upon reaching Kingston, we got organized downtown at the Queen’s University campus. Unfortunately, the Michalski automobile was not ready, so six of us set out in the late evening. The other six would head out in the morning, and the plan was to meet up in Wash ington. We never did connect; before cell phones and texting, communica tions were very crude.

The first six included David with his Rambler, Graham, Marilyn, Vince Del Buono, Claire Ellard, and I. The car had bench seating, so you could have six adults ride reasonably comfortably

for the trip. I don’t remember wearing seatbelts.

At the American border, our only difficulty was with Vince. I think he was the only one with a passport, and his was Italian. There was some discus sion with the border guards, but even tually, they allowed us across. In those days, all you needed was a license as proof at the border; the border tightened up later, and it became difficult to cross in advance of a major protest.

My recollection is that every one drove in shifts through the night, although Claire may not have had her license yet. We stopped several times for gas and washroom breaks, but it was never for long. We arrived in the capital at sunrise and found a place for breakfast. Then, we had a full day to

Hello! My name is Ariana, and I am hon oured to be Pro Tem’s new Editor in Chief! I am thrilled to announce our first issue of the 2022-2023 school year, which is chockfull of intrigue, contemplation, and nostal gia for the slowly ebbing days of summer.

We’re now nearing the end of September, and back-to-school season is in full swing, with courses and books ga lore! Being back on campus is such a won drous experience, and I encourage you all to take advantage of what Glendon has to offer, including the grounds in all their stun ning autumn glory. This year’s team, sup ported by all of our talented contributors, are excited to return to work putting togeth er our first issue of Pro Tem, now in its 61st year of publication. I am looking forward to the upcoming year at both Pro Tem and Glendon, and I cannot wait to get started!

As a longtime advocate for free dom of speech, Pro Tem believes in the ulti mate power of the student voice in enacting change and bringing attention to varying ar eas of interest. Pro Tem intends to continue its historical mission of serving as a reliable platform for student expression. We hope to provide an inclusive space for members of the Glendon community, regardless of the language you speak, the type of work you submit, or your major, and publish is sues representative of Glendon’s unique community and close-knit atmosphere. Throughout all your years at Glendon, and whether on-campus or virtual, Pro Tem will always be here for you to express yourself and speak up on what matters most to you.

» in tacte.

Campus Life Fundamental Opportunity

As we begin the new academic year, I find myself thinking a lot about the word ‘oppor tunity’. Opportunity carries a lot of weight. Just by saying this word, you can feel its power, and as you should; an opportunity is a powerful thing. Opportunity teaches us what we like and dislike, helps us under stand what we want and how we can reach our goals, and helps us to identify our mis takes. Opportunity plays a significant role in each of our lives.

Opportunity is essential mainly because it allows us to experience the un familiar. These experiences are crucial, es pecially this academic year, because many of us have not been on campus in over two years. The events we experience help us to learn about ourselves, other people, and the situation in general. For example, you may need to fail a test to realize that you need to adjust your study habits. Of course, failing a test does not feel great, but the emotions of that experience help you to learn how to improve your study habits,

and motivate you to do better in the future. In the world of academics, experience is your best friend; only so many textbooks and lectures can teach you about thriving in the real world.

Another reason opportunity is so important is that it allows us to acquire new skills through these experiences, which in turn allow us to find different perspectives in our daily lives. Each experience teach es us to adapt our behaviour in a way that enables us to accomplish the task. Work ing as a receptionist, for example, requires one to be organized, concise, and able to prioritize tasks. And, while reception seems unrelated to zoology, the skills acquired from being a receptionist can be valuable as a research zoologist; it is much easier to write reports and make hypotheses if your field notes are organized and pre cise. At the moment, specific opportunities might not seem relevant to your interests and goals for the future, but the experience that comes with that opportunity will tell you something: about yourself, about someone else, about the situation, or even about all three! That knowledge will help you with your decision-making and problem-solving in the future, as the skills gained through each experience give you a unique per spective, which can make all the difference.

This school year, I encourage you

to take every opportunity offered! Take part in school events, join clubs, network with different people in your classes, and open your mind to new things. You never know what you will learn, who you will meet, or what skills you will acquire. One thing is for

sure: whatever it is you learn, whoever it is you meet, and whatever it is you achieve, it will add to the unique mosaic of your personality. This will help you to thrive and flourish wherever you go; best of luck this year, Glendonites!

Book Review: The Pelican Brief by John Grisham

The Pelican Brief, a 1992 legal-thriller writ ten by the acclaimed author John Grisham and, in 1993, adapted into a motion picture starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Wash ington, is deserving of much critical praise and exposure. Now celebrating thirty years since its initial publication, the novel has quickly become one of my favourites. Hav ing never previously heard of this novel, nor its incredibly talented author, I dove into its pages with an objective mentality. Upon concluding the book, I was pleasantly surprised with its premise, characters, and inherent literary composition. Simply put, I wanted more.

Two-time winner of the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction, John Grisham (1955—) is an American author and gradu ate of Mississippi State University, as well as Ole Miss Law School. Grisham spe cializes in the arts of law, fiction, and pub lication. With over 30 novels to his name, many of them bestsellers with film or televi sion adaptations, Grisham is an immensely successful and influential social figure. His third standalone novel, The Pelican Brief, is

one that draws you into its pages and capti vates its readers.

The novel follows the events that unfold after the murder of two American Supreme Court justices. Law student Dar by Shaw, the main protagonist (portrayed by Julia Roberts in the film adaptation), plans to investigate the incidents, and eventually puts the pieces of an intricate puzzle together with scary accuracy. When her work, dubbed The Pelican Brief, falls into the wrong hands, her life and those of many others are suddenly endangered. At times, Shaw must evade a seemingly inevitable demise, unknowing of whom to trust, and how to survive. Shaw encounters many thrilling obstacles in her travels, and does not always come out with a definite win. Nonetheless, despite her pain and challenges, Shaw will stop at nothing to de liver justice to those most deserving.

Of late, I have found reading for pleasure to be something of a difficult task. Perhaps this is due in part to the sizable amounts of academic reading that post-secondary students are responsible for in their studies, or a subjective attribution to a shrinking attention span in a technologically-driven world (see: https:// www.washingtonpost.com/news/answersheet/wp/2012/11/02/is-technologychanging-students-brains-2/, an Easter egg that also relates to the novel at hand). However, The Pelican Brief is the first novel I have read solely for pleasure since reading and reviewing Tuesdays

with Morrie, by Mitch Albom, last winter (Issue 6, 2021/2022). The Pelican Brief is a novel that I deeply admire, one which gripped me from the beginning with every page better than the last. Grisham pens this story beautifully, grasping the readers’ intrigue and never letting it go. If anything, it tightens its hold gradually.

Had I been acquainted with Grish am earlier, I would have begun reading his works sooner, works which, if anything like The Pelican Brief, are so marvelously writ ten. After The Pelican Brief, I found myself reading Grisham’s 2017 release, Camino Island. This novel, published 25 years af ter his third, is centred around an up-andcoming author that must infiltrate the world of stolen books, a task that becomes more complex and dangerous than anticipated. This novel is an excellent read, and I would strongly recommend you read this novel after The Pelican Brief. In sum, Grisham is a profound storyteller, and I sincerely urge

Glendon to give The Pelican Brief a read— for a worthwhile one it is.

5. The Social Blend

Navigating the nail world: Tips for your next manicure

If there’s one thing that the nail polish in dustry has perfected, it’s variety. Whether in colour, shape, texture, length, or mate rial, there will always be a nearly insane number of options available to pamper yourself with. Unfortunately, all that choice also means your attempt to relax can make your head spin instead. Read ahead to feel a little more ready for your next mani-pedi!

Most confusion stems from all the different types of nail polish that you can choose from, and the purpose of each type. Here are some of the most common options you’ll have:

1. “Normal” nail polish

By far the most affordable option, plain nail polish is a good option if longevity isn’t your main concern. On average, a basic mani cure should last around five days without chipping, depending on how harsh you are on your nails, as well as the quality of your polish. Basic polish, as long as it’s properly removed and doesn’t have any alarming ingredients, shouldn’t cause any harm to your nails. It’s still a good idea to treat yourself to some cuticle oil and moisturizer after removal, since acetone in nail polish removers can be quite drying.

• ¾ cup of milk (I love almond or oat milk)

• ½ teaspoon of ground cardamom

• 1 teaspoon of honey

• Ground cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Directions

1. Place honey and ground cardamom at the bottom of your favourite cup.

2. Brew espresso or prepare some coffee, then pour it into the cup. Stir the contents.

3. Froth heated milk or carefully boil it, then slowly add to cup.

4. Garnish with some ground cinnamon and enjoy!

2. Shellac

One of the most commonly mentioned pol ishes aside from plain polish, shellac is a longer-wearing polish developed in 2010, and offers what many people consider a smoother, shinier, and stronger manicure. A shellac manicure can last between two and three weeks, and is adored by many for its quicker drying times and durability. Shellac functions like a polish, so if you’re looking to extend your nail length, you’ll need to look into gel extensions, acrylic, or dip powders. The one major downside is the potential for nail damage: although a proper removal should limit the damage to your nails, most people experience some sort of nail peeling, cracking, brittleness, and overall weakness after shellac remov al. A higher concentration of acetone is used for shellac removals, and for longer intervals, which can cause damage that might take up to two weeks to heal.

3. Gel and gel extensions

Similar to shellac, but perceived as less damaging by some, gel nails offer many of the same benefits, along with the additional option to extend your nails. Gel nails are also durable enough to last around two to three weeks, as long as you aren’t both ered by the fresh nail growth that will peek out by then, and the risk of more damage the longer they are kept on. The removal process shouldn’t cause damage as long as the nails are removed with care, avoid ing forceful scraping or peeling, and then tended afterwards with cuticle oil and a good moisturizer. Even so, some peeling or nail weakness is normal in the first few days after a removal.

4. Acrylic

Acrylic nails also last around two weeks, but are a mix of liquid and a powder, rather than the gel or polish textures you find in shellac and gel nails. Most nail technicians are familiar with acrylics, which means it can be easier to find someone skilled who is able to get you the finish you de sire. Acrylics can be harder for a beginner to manage, since it’s easy for them to end up too thick on the nail, looking and feel ing bulky. Additionally, the removal process for acrylics is also quite hard on the nails, and can cause a fair bit of damage if the removal process is made even more harsh by inexperience. Acrylics can be a more af fordable option, however, compared to gel nails, and are a tried-and-true method for nail extensions.

Though there are many more op tions out there, you should be able to find one of these four manicure types at a sa lon near you. A Trip to Washington DC to protest the Viet Nam WarOctober 1969: Part One (cont.)

city centre; we took full advantage of it.

In addition to the Supreme Court building and the Library of Congress, which

is a sight to behold for any bibliophile, we took in the Congress. We sat as guests in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. I remember venturing to Maine Senator Edmund Muskie’s office to get a pass to the Senate visitor gallery; it was a flimsy piece of cardboard, but I carried it with me for years afterwards. Notably, Muskie had pushed for the withdrawal of American troops from Viet Nam and called for the cessation of bombing in North Viet Nam. In 1972, he made an unsuccessful attempt for the Democratic presidential nomination, but his campaign found a quick death after he “cried” on the campaign trail in New Hampshire (see: https://en.wikipe

dia.org/wiki/Canuck_letter).

At one point, we went to the Ca nadian Embassy to see if we could connect with the second car; we were unsuccessful, and never did see them while we were in the city. As evening approached, we wan dered over to the Washington Monument, where it was reported that there were over 100,000 people ready to march. We were given candles by the organizers to carry in the night past the White House, occupied by Richard Nixon. The march was peaceful, and there was much merriment and singing as we made our way past the high fence on Pennsylvania Avenue. People began to put their candles on the spikes of the wrought

iron fence of the White House. It was tru ly a memorable sight to see hundreds of candles burning in the night. Marilyn recalls that I carried a Canadian flag.

According to Ken Burn’s docu mentary on the war, our protest was the last one allowed anywhere near the White House. The following month, the Presi dential Mansion was surrounded by city buses. But we didn’t know that then; after the march, we were most concerned with finding someplace to bunk for the night.

The Art of Decision-Making: A Gambler’s Dilemma

In a literal sense, the “gambler’s fallacy” is often attributed to the perceived probability of an event occurring while someone is gambling: a dice roll, a jackpot score, a favourable hand, etc. For instance, if a person is flipping a coin and happens to flip the tails side more often than the heads side, a person may come to believe that they have a greater chance of flipping the tails side the next time around. In real ity, the chance of landing on tails remains 50% every time, regardless of past results. While pondering the character of the gam bler’s fallacy in a deeper sense, I began to notice its applicability in situations unrelat ed to gambling.

When confronted with the difficult decisions of everyday life, I find it beneficial to review similar choices that I have made in the past. I look at how previous decisions have panned out, and the consequences that have occurred as a result of them. Us ing the gambler’s fallacy, I may look to see if something has worked—or, conversely, not worked—using historic precedent to dictate my approach to the decision at hand.

My commute to work is a great ex ample of the fallacy at play. I like to depart for work 20 minutes before the time of my shift to arrive right on time. This has been an effective way of ensuring that I will reach my destination in a timely manner. How ever, this does not take into account any problems that I may encounter on the road such as traffic, or a car accident. Therefore, although I believe that leaving 20 minutes

before is acceptable as has worked in the past, there may come a day when I will not make it to work on time—meaning that I should perhaps give myself some more room for delay.

Moreover, the idea of the gam bler’s fallacy is highly relevant to many other aspects of my life, including my field of academic study, History. People tend to analyse what has happened in the past in order to predict the future. While this may potentially be of great benefit (in avoiding war, disease, conflict, etc.), it may also en compass outdated ideas. In other words, the decisions of the past may not be ap propriate in the future. We are seeing this with political correctness, climate change efforts, educational approaches, and a multitude of other issues. Indeed, as time goes on, society will continue to evolve and change. We must always look to what will best suit people now, rather than what suited the people that lived in very different circumstances.

Another great example of the gambler’s fallacy in everyday life is in the practice of law. Oftentimes, lawyers must observe precedent cases and apply the outcomes to current cases. They may look for similarities between such cases, includ ing the events that transpired, the parties involved, and the consequences that en sued (if any). In doing so, inconsistency within the justice system is largely avert ed; however, if not properly carried out, adherence to precedents can also result in unjust decision-making. Following the common-law traditions, where, as afore mentioned, precedent cases (unwritten rules) are standard, judicial rulings are very flexible and subject to interpretation. How ever, what has happened in one case, re gardless of how similar, may not be entirely relevant in every case thereafter. Much like every game of poker is different, with dif fering tables, players, dealers, and hands,

every case is also distinctive. The game (or crime, lawsuit, etc.) may be the same, but the specific components may vary.

Following civil law, then, is much different. Quebec is the only province in Canada to do so, and many arguments can be made for and against its use. Above all, the province adheres to a comprehensive statement of rules based on the French Na poleonic Code; then, should they be nec essary, a consultation of prior cases. This method of judicial decision-making allows for greater uniformity, as everyone, regard less of particular circumstances, is bound by the same legislation. Nevertheless, both the common and civil legal approaches, with one favouring legal tailoring and the other legal codification/consistency, offer their own advantages and disadvantages.

With reference to the gambler’s fallacy, the ultimate question is thus: should cases be decided using historical precedents, or should only the issues at hand, congruent

with written legislation, be taken into con sideration?

I was surprised to discover that the gambler’s fallacy extends beyond the implications of its name. It applies to many situations, most of which are unrelated to gambling. Needless to say, the fallacy’s name is accurate in one sense: when you apply the outcomes of historical occur rences to present-day situations, you are, in fact, taking a gamble upon the ramifica tions.

The white and red interior provokes the question of what it will taste like. Passion? Sweetness? The snaggle-toothed cut of it seems as if the person cutting it was cut ting so quickly, quick enough to cut off their fingers and not even care. They only care for the green outer shell, making sure not to leave any in the last cuts. The first bite, the first bite is so decadent and tangy, as if you are drinking a fizzy drink or candy—

the natural kind. As you slide through the fruit with your teeth, the taste hits you. A liquid of sweetness and freshness. Not too sweet, not too sour. Perfect, refreshing.

The only thing you need on a hot summer’s day after having a long swim in the pool.

Reminding me of days up at that famous hotel, where I would spend hours swim ming in the pool, and thirsty, oh so thirsty, I would take a juicy bite into one of these and feel satisfied. The feeling in your stomach afterwards is strange, but satisfying all the same. Full of water, full of sweetness. You are enjoying your last days of summer, with this watery fruit.

So I go look at the ring

You gave me

One and a half years ago

When you proposed I’m going to open the door

And you will be there

Sitting and waiting for me

But instead I go to my bed where you lay

I go back to the time when I took your picture there

And I stare and remember
