If we have done well our hope is that we meet this mark or better it, this time next year. If it has been a rough one we will put it gladly behind us and muster up faith in the New Year, that through our efforts and persistence we will be in a better place by this time next year.

Either way, we made it, and as with all lessons we can learn to do things differently to make our lives and the lives of the people we associate with, better.

The general consensus is; US Manufacturing is getting stronger, jobs are becoming available, and our economy is starting to go in the right direction. Many companies are hiring and many people that have been out of jobs for a while, are obtaining work.The US has a weaker dollar, but this is stimulating US exports and this is good for the US. Other countries have to pay their workers a lot more than they used to and the playing field (fuel, logistics, communication, etc.) is becoming level. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon, importing products from cheaper nations will not be a common practice.

The US is poised to become, again, a nation that makes things, exports things, and is an example to the manufacturing industry worldwide.

We are all a very big part of this equation. The things we do affect our social and economic circle. The money we spend and where we spend it affects our economy (buy USA). The smile we choose to put on our face can and will infect every person we come in contact with. Every positive thing we do or think will move us toward our positive goal. Remember to lend a hand when someone needs help, it’s the right thing to do!

I talked with a machine tool dealer today who is sending one of his valued employees to help another machine tool dealer (who is in need) in a different territory, with their service backlog. This is a great gesture and one that is genuine and an example to us all. Working together, helping each other, with one positive direction.

This is the last issue for 2011 and Linda and I look forward to a busy year ahead, full of manufacturing expos, networking events, and visits to your facilities interviewing you and your business team for positive manufacturing news.

Strength for Delcam in theWestern United States Leading CADCAM software developer Delcam wrapped up its Advanced Manufacturing Update Technical Seminars last month with two sessions in California, one at SeekTech in San Diego and a second at Selway Tool in Buena Park.

Delegates to the meetings saw the new release of Delcam’s PowerSHAPE CAD software for product design, tooling design and reverse engineering. The 2012 version incorporates the first direct modeling capabilities, alongside many improvements to the existing combination of solid, surface and triangle modeling capabilities.

Demonstrated in PowerMILL 2012 was flowline machining and how with flowline machining, the toolpath is divided between a pair of drive curves in a constant number of passes, rather than having a varying number of passes with a constant stepover. This produces a better surface finish on the part and minimizes wear on the cutter and the machine tool. Other enhancements include control of the angular point distribution during five-axis machining, new thread milling options and improved workplane editing. It has also been made easier to obtain measurements, including distances, angles and directions, from the part model and enter these values into PowerMILL forms automatically.

Shown in FeatureCAM 2012 was how the software has been made even easier to use. A range of keyboard shortcuts have been added and toolpath editing has been made much easier. Other improvements include further developments in the use of stock models to cover 2D features, including bosses, sides and slots, extra options within the tooling database, the ability to automatically counterbore holes before drilling, fully-automated de-burring and chamfering, the possibility to create a negative leave allowance (such as a fitting allowance) for turning or wire EDM to produce undersized features without remodeling, and much improved performance on the largest part files with hundreds of thousands of entities.

Intel, Micron Extend NAND Flash Technology Leadership Intel Corporation and Micron Technology, Inc., announced a new benchmark in NAND flash technology - the world’s first 20 nanometer (nm), 128 gigabit (Gb), multilevel-cell (MLC) device. The companies also announced mass production of their 64Gb 20nm NAND, which further extends the companies’ leadership in NAND process technology.

Developed through Intel and Micron’s joint-development venture, IM Flash Technologies (IMFT), the new 20nm monolithic 128Gb device is the first in the industry to enable a terabit (Tb) of data storage in a fingertip-size package by using just eight die. It also provides twice the storage capacity and performance of the companies’ existing 20nm 64Gb NAND device. The 128Gb device meets the high-speed ONFI 3.0 specification to achieve speeds of 333 megatransfers per second (MT/s), providing customers with a more cost-effective solid-state storage solution for today’s slim, sleek product designs, including tablets, smartphones and high-capacity solid-state drives (SSDs.) The companies also revealed that the key to their success with 20nm process technology is due to an innovative new cell structure that enables more aggressive cell scaling than conventional architectures. The demand for high-capacity NAND flash devices is driven by three interconnected market trends: data storage growth, the shift to the cloud and the proliferation of portable devices. As digital content continues to grow, users expect that data to be available across a multitude of devices, all synchronized via the cloud. To effectively stream data, servers require high-performance, high-capacity storage that NAND delivers, and storage in mobile devices has consistently grown with increased access to data. High-definition video is one example of an application that requires high-capacity storage, since attempting to stream this type of data can create a poor user experience.

General Atomics Wins Contract General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc., Poway, Calif., was awarded a $15,171,136 cost-plus-fixed-fee and cost-plus-incentivefee contract.

The award will provide for the modification of an existing contract to support the MQ-1C Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft system quick reaction capability. Work will be performed in Poway, Calif., with an estimated completion date of Jan. 7, 2012.

Boeing spokesman insists Air Force tanker will turn profit metalworkerad.indd 1

The Boeing Co.’s KC-46 Air Force tanker program will make money, a company spokesman insists, despite a spate of recent coverage suggesting otherwise.

“We expect to make money on the KC-46 tanker program,” said Jerry Drelling, Boeing’s Mukilteobased spokesman for the program, in response to questions. “In addition, the KC-46 contract opens additional opportunities, including potential U.S. and international tanker sales and related services for decades to come.”

A Bloomberg news story, published in the Washington Post http://www.bizjournals.com/ , suggests that the program could exceed its cost ceiling of $4.8 billion for the first 18 aircraft, which would suggest a loss for Boeing for this initial phase.

The first 17 tankers fall under the initial Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract to prove to the government that the aircraft and the assembly process are sound before the contract for the balance of the 179 tankers is awarded to Boeing.

Solar plane promises new era of flight

Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract Extension by Royal Australian Air Force Northrop Grumman Corporation has been awarded a four-year extension by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to the existing support contract for the LITENING AT system, used as the RAAF’s Target Designation System for F/A-18 Hornet aircraft (HTDS).

Boeing, Lion Air Announce Historic Commitment for up to 380 737s Boeing and Jakarta-based Lion Air announced a commitment for the airline to order 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900 ERs (extended range). The agreement also includes purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes.

“The 737 MAX will be the future of Lion Air,” said Rusdi Kirana, Lion Air Founder and President Director. “The highly efficient, technologically advanced airplane will help Lion Air continue to bring low fares and allow us to open new destinations because of the longer range of the airplane.”

With 230 airplanes at a list price of $21.7 billion, this deal when finalized will be the largest commercial airplane order ever in Boeing’s history by both dollar volume and total number of airplanes.

Boeing and Lion Air are working to finalize details of the agreement, at which time it will be a firm order posted on the Boeing Orders and Deliveries website. Lion Air will also acquire purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes valued at more than $14 billion if exercised at list prices.

Delcam Suppor ts Colina Middle School with ArtCAM

Gary Norwalt isn’t your typical middle school computer teacher. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Gary teaches Computer Technology to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks, California. He’s been doing this for 22 years now, the last 12 at Colina, where he runs 6 different programs simultaneously.

“For one of my more advanced classes, I was looking for a CAD modeling and CNC machining software program that would allow my students to design and make 2 and 3 dimensional art designs.”

He continued, “A few years ago, a software company donated a software package that they said would do just that. While the company was very generous in their donation, we just couldn’t use their solution. I have an engineering background, and the software was incredibly complex even to me. The kids just weren’t going to be able to use it.”

So Gary started a search on his own and a few years ago, discovered another software package that would work for his middle school students. What he found was ArtCAM a software solution from Delcam, one of the largest CADCAM developers in the world. “To be honest, in my search I didn’t see a lot of other solutions that would work for my needs the way I thought ArtCAM would.”

rotating the finished product within a fully reflective environment.

Luckily we had another company donated a rapid prototype 3-D printer to us, so we can now take the ArtCAM software and import it directly into the 3-D printer. ArtCAM exports easily into STL, as well as generating tool paths to a CNC.” He continued, “My students love working the ArtCAM software. One of the major benefits is in how user friendly it really is.They can pick it up very easily.They additionally enjoy seeing the CAD models turn into an actual part in the Advanced Computer Lab where they are also learning machining.”

“The kids get really fired up about this software, and the projects they make with their own hands. I know we’re teaching the right things to our students when I see the look of excitement on their faces!

We have a number of kids who will be very adept with CAD software when they enter the job market in years to come. They will additionally be familiar with machining which opens up a whole other market segment for them.”

MISMATCH OF SKILLS AND JOBS

Most of the jobs hard to fill are for skilled trades, Internet technology, engineers, sales representatives and machine operators. Yet American colleges are producing fewer math and science graduates as students favor social sciences, whose workload is perceived to be manageable, leading to a skills mismatch. Math, engineering, technology and computer science students accounted for about 11.1 percent of college graduates in 1980, according to government data.That share dropped to about 8.9 percent in 2009.

An aging population of skilled workers is adding to the problem. As the baby boomers retire, there are fewer skilled workers available to replace them. “Many of the younger kids that are coming out of college have been discouraged to go into manufacturing,” said Dennis Bray, president and CEO of Contour Precision Group. “A lot of the college graduates have chosen a curriculum and degree that does not give them the necessary science and math skills to be of immediate benefit to companies such as ours.”

So many US manufacturing jobs, so few skilled workers U.S. manufacturers are failing to fill thousands of vacant jobs, surprising when 14 million people are searching for work. Technology giant Siemens Corp., the U.S. arm of Germany’s Siemens AG , has over 3,000 jobs open all over the country. More than half require science, technology, engineering and math-related skills. Other companies report job vacancies that range from six to 200, with some positions open for at least nine months. Manufacturing is hurt by a dearth of skilled workers.

“What we have been saying for quite a while is that even though there is a high unemployment rate, it’s very difficult to find skilled people,” said Jeff Owens, president of ATS, a manufacturing consulting services company. A survey by ManpowerGroup found that a record 52 percent of U.S. employers have difficulty filling critical positions within their organizations – up from 14 percent in 2010.

Owens said his company, which counts manufacturing behemoths Caterpillar and Motorola among its clients, has at any given time about 200 open positions. “We are pro-actively working to fill them. It can take 90 to a hundred days, probably, to fill them,” he told Reuters.

“We are creating jobs. We just don’t necessarily have the right people to fill them.”

On average, companies usually take seven weeks to fill job openings.

Contour Precision, based in Clover, South Carolina, does contract work for the energy and aerospace industries. It is currently looking for six technicians. It has had positions open since last year. Unemployment in manufacturing is at 8.4 percent, below the overall rate of 9.1 percent. According to the Labor Department’s latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, there were 240,000 open jobs in manufacturing in August up 38.7 percent from a year ago. The problem is sufficiently serious that businesses are pushing Congress to address the issue of visas and help them hire more high-skilled foreigners.

STRUCTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT? These companies’ inability to fill open jobs suggests that part of the unemployment problem confronting the nation could be more of a structural nature rather than a downturn in the business cycle. Two years after the end of the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, about 14 million Americans are still unemployed. In September, nearly 45 percent of them had been out of work for six months or more.

The longer people are out of the workforce, the more dated their skills become, making it even harder to reintegrate them into the labor market.

The types of jobs available are also changing. Medium-skilled repetitive tasks that can be computerized continue to disappear. First, it was from from the factory floor, but it also affects the back office, where processing and support jobs are declining. The strongest job growth is concentrated in healthcare and the scientific, technical and computer fields, which usually require at least a post-secondary education.

“The old jobs are not coming back.We need to invest in education and training to get people prepared to fill these high-skilled, high-wage jobs of the future,” said Eric Spiegel, president and CEO of Siemens Corp. Siemens is recruiting in states where unemployment is high.

Illinois, Georgia and New York have jobless rates that range from 8 percent to 12.1 percent. According to the Conference Board, workers with computer and math or science skills have a far better chance of getting a job, with one worker applying for every three of these types of jobs advertised. In contrast, there are roughly three people for every advertised job in sales.

BRING IN THE ARMY

PLENTY OF WELL-PAYING JOBS

“We have found that veterans have extensive technical training and experience that they gain through military service, and these skills are extremely valuable to us and match up well with many of our over 3,000 open positions,” Spiegel said. Siemens has hired 450 military veterans so far this year. Others are teaming up with professional bodies like the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), which has developed online courses to support its members.

Few of the thousands of jobs open in the manufacturing sector are lowwage positions. Workers at the very low levels can earn as much as $30 an hour, with annual salaries for engineers ranging from $75,000 to $100,000. At Siemens, the average potential salary offered for its open positions is $89,000 a year.

Manufacturing lost its appeal during the 1990s when companies started moving production to Asian countries like China, in search of cheap labor. But rising wages in China are forcing some companies to bring production back home. Although manufacturing accounts for about 12 percent of U.S. gross domestic product and about 10 percent of total non-farm employment, it has been the main pillar of support for the economy and one of the highest-paying sectors.

The shortage of skilled workers is also compounded by the depressed housing market, which is making it tough for Americans to relocate to where the jobs are. The housing market crash has left many people with home loans owing financial institutions more than what their houses are worth, making it difficult for them to sell.

In hopes of addressing the skills gap, companies such as Siemens and ATS are turning to the military, targeting veterans. Siemens is embarking on apprenticeship programs, while ATS is running training programs for young people.

“We are not filling the pipeline with enough candidates for these positions. This problem has been ongoing for the last three or four years,” said Mark Tomlinson, CEO of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

But the long-term solution lies in revamping the nation’s education system to meet the current challenges and invest more in vocational training, industry leaders say.

“Often people say we do have vocational training, but it’s geared towards yesterday’s technology and yesterday’s job opportunities,” said ATS’s Owens. “I am not sure the educators are on the mark with what exactly needs to be taught for today’s environment.”

For Nelson and other teachers, the challenge is to make math relate to students’ potential careers.

Barry Grall explained how he uses math in his role as a tool designer for C&D Zodiac. He walked the students through the process of building a tool mold via computer-assisted design. Grall showed how he added triangle shapes to the build-up of an aircraft ramp door to add strength to the primarily flat object.“You don’t have to know all the math formulas for doing this,” he said. “But you need to have exposure to the mathematical tools to be able to use them.”

At another stop on the tour at C&D Zodiac, students learned about non-destructive testing, in which ultrasonic waves are used to see whether a slab of composite material has internal flaws. Using a different machine nearby, sophomore Colin Henry got to try out a long, tube-shaped instrument, tracing it along a metal part. The tool helps C&D Zodiac workers measure complex shapes that would be difficult, if not impossible, to measure with hand tools.

Henry said he found the tour of C&D Zodiac interesting. Although he enjoys math, Henry said he isn’t sure what type of career he’ll pursue.

The students, who were mostly sophomores, will need to a make a decision about which math classes to take next year, based on their anticipated career path, Nelson said. If they plan to go to college, they’ll likely take advanced algebra or pre-calculus. If they plan to pursue a skilled trade, they could take computer assisted design.

The field trip “gets them out of the classroom and gives them an idea of the opportunities out there,” he said.

Navy, Agriculture Departments to Purchase Biofuels For Fleets

Administration officials say the aim is to promote the use of biofuels, to reduce dependence on unstable sources of foreign oil and reduce budget shocks from oil price hikes.

The departments of Agriculture and the Navy announced plans to buy 450,000 gallons of non-food biofuels -- at a cost of $16 per gallon -- in what will be the largest federal purchase of biofuels in U.S. history.

The fuel will power planes and the surface ships of the “Great Green Fleet Carrier Strike Force” in summer 2012 exercises off Hawaii.The carrier itself is nuclear-powered.

The purchase is being authorized by an executive order under the Obama administration’s “we can’t wait” campaign.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said the Navy’s led the way in power innovation -- from sail to coal, coal to diesel, diesel to nuclear, and now to biofuel. Aircraft and ships will use a 50-50 blend of biofuel and conventional fuel.

Administration officials gave no indication why they’re not going through Congress, instead using a program that was established to promote rapid job growth by bypassing congressional debate.

Two companies will participate in the program -- Louisiana-based Dynamic Fuels, a joint venture of Tyson foods and Syntroleum Corp, which makes biofuel from used cooking oil; and California based Solazyme, which makes fuel from algae.

The demonstration project is aimed at commercial aviation as well as the Defense Department. Commercial aviation uses 12 billion to 13 billion gallons of fuel a year and officials say biofuel blends or substitutes would be more easily distributed through 30 to 40 airports than trying to distribute it through auto gas stations to offset gasoline use by drivers.

FAA awards $7.7 million in biofuel contracts The FAA announced this month it is awarding $7.7 million in contracts to eight companies engaged in developing/ producing alternative fuel to power commercial flights.

The agency said in a statement that the eight companies “will help the FAA develop and approve alternative, sustainably sourced ‘drop-in’ jet fuels that can be used without changing aircraft engine systems or airport fueling infrastructure. As part of that work, the companies will develop these biofuels from sources such as alcohols, sugars, biomass and organic materials known as pyrolysis oils. In addition, the contracts call for research into alternative jet fuel quality control, examination of how jet biofuels affect engine durability, and provide guidance to jet biofuel users about factors that affect sustainability.”

Honeywell UOP is one of the eight companies, winning a $1.1 million contract to produce renewable jet fuel from isobutanol, a type of alcohol. The isobutanol, which will be supplied by the biofuel company Gevo, “can be produced from a variety of starch and sugar feedstocks, including corn,” UOP said. “In the future, inedible sources, such as corn stover, bagasse and wood residues, could also

be used as feedstocks.”

UOP has been contracted to deliver 100 gallons of renewable jet fuel derived from isobutanol to the US government in 2012.

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said, “Alternative aviation fuels offer enormous potential environmental and economic benefits.

This work, in combination with investments being made by other US agencies and industry, will advance our pursuit of clean alternative jet fuels for a more sustainable NextGen aviation system in the United States and around the world.”

Other companies receiving contracts as part of the program include LanzaTech ($3 million), Virent Energy Systems ($1.5 million), Velocys ($1.5 million), Honeywell Aerospace ($280,000), Metron Aviation ($250,000), Futurepast ($50,000) and Life Cycle Associates ($25,000).

and coordinate a series of prize-based, minicompetitions or “challenges” for each element of the FANG vehicle. The FANG awardee will also “ensure the smooth integration of each step in the end-to-end “make” process,” according to the notice.

The FANG program won’t replace what the Marines are doing now for ACV. Both programs will run side by side, according to the notice. The service will stay on its traditional contract award and development track.

The FANG program will be run on this new DARPA-developed acquisition track.

Once complete, the Marines will pick which vehicle it wants to move into full production. The agency claims FANG will end up shrinking system development timelines “five-fold,” according to the industry notice released recently.

Schedule delays and cost growth forced the Marine Corps to cancel the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle earlier this year. ACV is the Marines’ second attempt to build a combat amphib.

Three challenges are planned for the FANG program. The first will focus on the vehicle’s mobility and drive-train system. The second will look at chassis durability in a combat environment. The final challenge will integrate the results of the first two and produce a prototype version of the FANG “with the exception of the command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance suite, the battle management system and weapons.”

Competitors will use a modeling and simulation program built by DARPA to develop their proposals in each of the challenges.

DARPA has also built an open-source database where potential designs can be shared between competitors and the department.

These systems “significantly change the design experience and open the aperture for design innovation,” DARPA claims.

Improving the “design experience” and opening the creative aperture is all well and good.

But how will this save the Pentagon and the Marines time and money? Initial research and development costs should drop significantly, since all a prime contractor has to do is pony up the award money for each challenge.

Having multiple teams working on a single challenge means multiple design ideas and theories can be tested simultaneously.

The trial-and-error cycle that so often bogs down R&D work would be truncated significantly.The prime contractor can skim the best design ideas from the various challenges and put them into the vehicle. In theory, R&D and design integration costs and schedules drop to virtually nothing.

Add in DARPA’s virtual design simulation and open-source database, and costs drop even more.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos has famously claimed he wants to drive an ACV prototype into the Potomac River before his stint as commandant ends.

If FANG works, the four-star general could be in deep water -- in a good way -- sooner than he thinks.

Business jet market expected to start picking up in 2012 A Cessna Citation Mustang. A new forecast predicts that the top three producers of business jets in the next 10 years in terms of volume will be Cessna Aircraft, followed by Embraer and Bombardier.

The worst of the downturn in the business jet market is over, according to a new forecast by Forecast International.

The market for business jet production is expected to show some minor improvement next year, signaling the start of a gradual — but potentially long-lasting — market recovery, the forecast said.

“Business jet production in 2012 will show some minor improvement over 2011, but more substantial growth in build rates will have to wait until 2013,” Raymond Jaworowski, Forecast International senior aerospace analyst, said in a statement.

The forecast projects demand for 10,907 business jets valued at $230.3 billion in the 10 years from 2011 to 2020. Next year, production is expected to total 728 planes.

But production isn’t expected to return to 2008 levels, a record for the market at 1,313 jets, until 2018.

Still, business aircraft usage is up, the market for used business jets has stabilized and corporate profits are strong, the forecast said.

Business jet manufacturers have a number of new jets in development, such as Cessna’s Citation M2 and Latitude, Bombardier’s Global 7000 and 8000, and Gulfstream’s G650. The manufacturers hope the new models will benefit from improved market conditions and will contribute to the recovery by stimulating demand, Jaworowski wrote in the report.

The forecast predicts that the top three producers of business jets in the next 10 years in terms of volume will be Cessna Aircraft, followed

by Embraer and Bombardier. By value of production, the top three companies are expected to be Gulfstream, Bombardier and Dassault, all of which build larger, more expensive, business aircraft.

Honeywell Aerospace’s annual forecast released in October forecasts similar numbers of jets. Honeywell also projects 2011 to be the trough for business jet deliveries, followed by modest growth for the next few years.The outlook projects demand for 10,000 business jets over 10 years, with half of them delivered in the next five years. It predicts that it will be the end of the decade before demand returns to pre-recession levels.

Honeywell projected deliveries for 2012 to reach about 700, up from 600 to 650 this year.

Don Stevenson, program area manager of clean fossil-fueled energy technologies at PWR, says that gasification is one of the key technologies being revisited and updated.

Coal is still the dominant source of energy and chemical production all around the world, creating a huge demand for gasification in emerging markets. Gasification addresses the concern of turning coal into clean energy.

The carbon monoxide and hydrogen syngas can be used for a variety of things downstream. It can be turned into fuels and chemicals. The hydrogen or even the syngas can be used in a turbine to produce power.The CO2 gas that remains after processing the syngas is under pressure and can be easily captured and then sequestered or used for other purposes such as pumping it into depleted oil wells to reduce viscosity in thick crude, allowing it to be pumped out. The CO2 gas remains underground instead of being ejected it into the atmosphere.

A system that employs carbon sequestration has reduced emissions by over 90% from any existing coal power plant.

In a standard large gasification plant, whether for chemical or power production, the gasifier section is typically several stories tall. The whole plant is very complex and expensive. The PWR technology is able to reduce the size by 90% and all the associated infrastructure cost and complexity comes down. “Using our technology will enable a power or chemical plant owner to reduce their capital and operating cost by 25%,” Stevenson says.

The technology difference comes from Rocketdyne’s expertise in very high energy density, high thermal and high pressure environments from decades of space work.

PWR’s gasification technology has been demonstrated at their pilot plant in Chicago; a facility that has run coal at a rate of 18 to 20 tons per day for over a year with over 700 hr of testing to prove the technological feasibility of their process. Stevenson says that the next step is building a working demonstration plant that will be 20 times larger and run 400 or more tons of coal per day.

“ExxonMobil has been a key development partner through this pilot plant test program and remains enthusiastic about the prospects for this technology. We are also looking at various additional partners who can host this plant at a location that is suitable for us. We will essentially be building a new plant. I say ‘essentially’ because it will most likely be married up to a larger existing commercial facility to reduce the overall cost,” Stevenson says.

Boeing has taken orders for 643 airplanes this year, according to its website. The gross total is the highest since 2008, when the company scored 669 orders. But 2007 was a record year for Boeing, which took 1,423 orders that year.

An industry downturn took its toll on global aircraft orders after 2007, and U.S. carriers froze much of their spending as they slashed capacity to offset flagging travel demand.

These final, percolating orders follow a giant order placed in July by now-bankrupt American Airlines for 460 single-aisle jets worth up to $40 billion split between Boeing and Airbus. In August, Delta Air Lines said it ordered 100 Boeing Next-Generation 737-900ER airplanes.

There has been a long-expected avalanche of orders from U.S. carriers, which are craving fuel-efficient airplanes to replenish their fleets as the industry recovers from the years-long downturn.

United, Southwest and FedEx all declined to comment on potentialpending orders. Boeing also declined to comment on talks with customers.

that the carrier was being briefed by Boeing on the 737 MAX and added it was “very desirous” of the next-generation engine technology.

“I certainly expect Southwest at some point to buy this plane,” said Hunter Keay, airline analyst with Wolfe Trahan & Co. “The long-term strategy for them is going to be centered around the 737.”

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Lockheed Martin Lockheed has successfully completed thermal vacuum testing of the U.S. Air Force’s second Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) geosynchronous (GEO-2) satellite. The milestone represents the spacecraft’s most significant achievement to-date on the path to launch.

SBIRS satellites deliver vastly improved missile warning capabilities for the nation while simultaneously improving the military’s missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness mission areas.

During thermal vacuum testing, SBIRS GEO-2 was thoroughly tested at the extreme hot and cold temperatures it will experience in space to verify its functionality and performance. Thermal vacuum testing represents the last of several critical environmental test phases that validate the overall satellite design, quality of workmanship and survivability during space vehicle launch and on-orbit operations.

Lockheed Martin will now perform final factory work on the satellite and execute a series of integrated spacecraft and system tests to ensure the vehicle is ready for flight. GEO-2 will then be delivered to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where it will undergo final processing and preparation for launch aboard an Atlas V launch vehicle.

SBIRS GEO satellites include highly sophisticated scanning and staring sensors that deliver improved infrared sensitivity and a reduction in area revisit times over the heritage constellation. The scanning sensor provides a wide area surveillance of missile launches and natural phenomena across the earth, while the staring sensor can be tasked to observe smaller areas of interest with superior sensitivity. The dual independent sensors enhance early warning of missile launches around the globe, support the nation’s ballistic missile defense system, for warfighters on the battlefield.

The semiconductor industry should see sales of more than $300 billion in 2011 as the industry continues to see growth despite a slowdown in its pace compared with 2010.

The Semiconductor Industry Association has backed the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization’s belief that sales will hit $302 billion this year, topping the $300 billion mark for the first time. Last year the industry came close, finishing with $298 billion in worldwide revenue.

Semiconductor manufacturing is a major industry sector in Phoenix with large players such as Intel Corp., ON Semiconductor Corp, Microchip Technology Inc. and others employing more than 22,000 workers combined in the region.

“Despite a challenging global economic environment this year and the natural disasters that have impacted production in Asia, the semiconductor industry has demonstrated impressive resilience,” said Brian Toohey, president of the Washington-based SIA. “The growing level of semiconductor content embedded across a wide range of consumer, industrial, business and government applications points to continued growth in 2012 and 2013.”

The WSTS data points to continued slow but rising sales of semiconductors over the next two years. The forecast calls for $310 billion in sales for 2012, a 2.6 percent increase over this year, and $328 billion in sales for 2013, a growth rate of 5.8 percent.

Projections for 2011 were much rosier last year. The same forecast in November 2010 called for sales this year to reach nearly $319 billion. The industry ran into a slowing economy and a dual earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March that knocked parts of that’s country semiconductor industry offline. It is only now starting to come back.

Consumer demand has been slowing, as witnessed by nearly flat month-over-month growth rates the industry has been seeing.

Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings is purchasing the 550 megawatt Topaz photovolatic farm from First Solar Inc. The large solar panel farm will be located on the Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo CA and will have the capacity to provide electricity for 160,000 nearby homes.

As part of the agreement, First Solar will construct and operate as well as maintain the panel farm for MidAmerican Energy.

MidAmerican Energy Holdings says it’s increasing it’s interest in and ownership of alternative energy projects and already provides natural gas and electricity to customers in Iowa, South Dakota and Illinois.

transmission lines in the area.The site will be located on non-prime agricultural land that is tilled but isn’t currently productive.

The economic benefits from property tax and sales tax for the county, employee wages and supply chain revenues will add up to an estimated $417 million.

The construction of the ground mounted panel farm will provide jobs for at least 400 during construction and 15 long-term workers.

Ongoing payroll and local purchases of material are estimated to be $3 to $4 million per year. Sales and property taxes paid to San Luis Obispo County will be in the $16 million range. Cal Poly and local schools will be benefit from joint research and educational programs in association with First Solar.

Pacific Gas and Electric will purchase the electricity produced by the Topaz panel farm through a 25 year power purchase agreement.
