“As for tweeting and texting: impassioned discussions, particularly when they’re intimate, don’t work in abbreviated script messages. No relationship should begin or end in 140 characters.” Mariella Frostrup Sometimes its best to just pick up the phone.
JM Grisley, Doosan’s Exclusive Dealer, Continues to Rack Up Happy Customers
We’ve all encountered disagreeable communication experiences in our personal and business lives. And I am sure every one of our readers has heard about a person we care about that is in a relationship that ultimately ends with a breakup that is done, incredulously, by text. In fact, according to a survey administered by dating siteWhatsYourPrice. com, statistics showed that 88 percent of males reported breaking up with someone over text – and 18 percent of women have too.

In business, we communicate with customers and suppliers on a daily basis, using phone, face-to-face meetings, emails and text. The specific medium used depends on who receives the message, for what purpose and in which time frame and location.
E-mail is desirable in the business world because it allows you to send file attachments of documents, and it leaves a written trail of correspondence that you can use for records or legal purposes.
PUBLISHER/EDITOR Linda Daly firstname.lastname@example.org
A text message sent by mobile phone is much quicker to send and receive than an e-mail; it happens in real time. For very urgent or important communications, texting can be useful, as it allows for quick viewing of attached photos or videos. Because they are usually short in length, texts are a convenient way of imparting business information in a concise way.

While email and even texting have their place in the business world, when you receive a voice mail message, a text, or an email from an unhappy business partner, whether it’s your customer or your supplier, it is almost always best to ‘pick up the phone’. Both texting and email allow the recipient to interpret (or misinterpret) the message tone and intention.

In a difficult situation, talking is the only right way to communicate, and when an in-person conversation isn’t possible or necessary, the phone should be your tool of choice.
Kim Carpenter Gene Wirth Hugh Taylor
Actually picking up the phone can be the fastest way to handle something. Email, text, and online chat are half-duplex -- like a walkie-talkie -- the conversation can only go in one direction at one time: Question, send. Answer, send. Reply, send. Comment, send...and so on. Other than a face-to-face conversation, the phone is the only full-duplex means of communication, where two or more people can speak simultaneously.
Published bi-monthly to keep precision manufacturers abreast of news and to supply a viable vendor source for the industry.
Studies have shown that of all customer service options, phone support consistently yields the best results. Tony Hsieh of Zappos.com, says in his bestselling book, “The telephone is one of the best branding devices out there.” It is particularly beneficial in a situation where there is a risk of “tone” being misunderstood. We’ve all been there, having written or received an email that was taken in a completely different spirit than intended. This misinterpretation can lead to anything from awkwardness to disaster. If there is any chance that the tone of your message will be misunderstood, it doesn’t belong in an email.
We’ve all done it —utilizing inpersonal emails and texts to address a difficult situation. But in the end, it is nearly always better to ‘pick up the phone’. Until next issue, I wish you the best and God Bless our Troops!

Announcements & Releases Faustson VP Hostetter Named to 2020 Governors Fellowship Class Faustson, a worldwide leader in machining and additive manufacturing, is pleased to announce that its VP Heidi Hostetter has been named to the 2020 class of Colorado Governors Fellows. This group of 23 business and community leaders will spend the next year studying issues and preparing to help shape policy and perception of life and public service in Colorado. The group was inducted into the program on June 27, 2019 by Governor Jared Polis. “I am so excited to participate in this program alongside some of Colorado’s strongest private sector leaders. Learning from them and implementing policy together feels like impactful and necessary work,” said Hostetter. “I have always believed, even before creating the ADAPT center through the state’s infrastructure program, that public/private partnerships are necessary to the success of what we do – especially as Colorado is growing so rapidly and we face infrastructure concerns due to that fast-paced growth.” The leadership program is in its fourth year, modeled after the White House Fellows Program and Dr. Geoff Smart’s book “Leadocracy,” in partnership with the University of Colorado School of Public Affairs and the Governor’s Office with funding from the Boettcher Foundation. All of Colorado’s living governors are supporters of the program, as well. “Colorado has a unique opportunity to elevate the brand of Colorado government by supporting emerging leaders who have a desire to serve the public sector,” Polis said in a statement. “The success of our state will be enhanced by the pipeline of talented emerging leaders from the Governors Fellowship Program. We are proud of their commitment and look forward to the incredible work they will achieve for Colorado’s future.” “We have phenomenal community leaders around our state,” CiviCO’s executive director Eric Hopfenbeck said in a statement. “It’s thrilling to see the interest in public service and passion for elevating Colorado. We are deeply honored to steward this program to elevate the brand of government and inspire public service.” About Faustson Faustson, a worldwide leader in the machining industry, provides services for clients worldwide in the medical, aerospace, aeronautics, defense, semiconductor and other industries. Commerce Launches New 232 Steel, Aluminum Tariff Exclusion Portal The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security has launched a new online portal for companies who import steel or aluminum subject to tariffs to submit exclusion requests, objections to exclusion requests, rebuttals, and surrebuttals for the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs, replacing the process through regulations.gov.
120,000 filings. The 232 Exclusions Portal was created to streamline the process by including standard web-based forms for submission as well as easily viewing all documents (exclusion request, objection, rebuttal, and surrebuttal documents) in one location, allowing parties to track requests throughout the entire process. The Department will not be migrating all requests that have already been filed into the new system, however, so there will be a transition period. When the portal went live on June 13, the Department stopped accepting requests filed through regulations.gov but the site is still being used for the processing of all exclusion requests initiated through June 12, 2019. Objections, rebuttals, and surrebuttals must always be filed on the system where the exclusion request was submitted, whether in www.regulations.gov or in the 232 Exclusions Portal. The Department has published a user guide for the 232 Exclusion Portal which includes step-by-step instructions on how to file and can be found here. Additionally, the Department will be accepting comments through August 9, 2019, on the 232 Exclusions Portal and whether the portal addresses concerns with the use of regulations.gov for the 232 exclusion process.

Features such as a coolant ring and washdown system, lift-up chip conveyor, and height adjustment on the control are standard on XP Series machines. The VM8434XP is now the largest Milltronics XP Series machine with 84” x 34” x 30” travels and a 86” x 34” table. Milltronics XP Series machines are equipped with the 9000 Series control that includes 120 GB disk storage, 4 GB memory, improved graphic performance, midtravel tactile keys, and a 15” LCD touch screen. The 9000 control allows operators to run parts programmed conversationally or by toolpaths generated by a CAM system. The 9000 Series control also supports the optional ChipBoss™ feature that uses proprietary algorithms to calculate toolpaths and control maximum allowable cutter engagement. ChipBossTM lets you use the whole length of a tool rather than just the tip, which means you can cut profiles at full depth rather than taking multiple depth passes. This new optional software works by automatically controlling the tool’s chip load, keeping it constant and creating the optimal chip, which results in faster cycle times, better tool life, and more accurate parts. The vast majority of the factory jobs have come in counties that were already adding factory employment before Trump took office. And a disproportionate share of the expansion was concentrated in prosperous areas like Silicon Valley and Houston.
WE’RE FAMOUS FOR OUR
An analysis of those statistics by the Economic Innovation Group, a Washington think tank, reveals a mixed political and economic picture for Trump. His 2016 victory was forged with upsets in manufacturing hubs like Michigan and Pennsylvania, and he has reveled in blue-collar job growth on his watch.

Growth In Factory Jobs Skips Traditional Hubs In President Donald Trump’s first two years in office, factory job growth accelerated, an achievement he has been claiming credit for ahead of the 2020 election, particularly in the industrial Midwest. His administration is “restoring American manufacturing,” Trump told workers at an Ohio factory in March. Some of the 465,000 factory jobs that the country created in 2017 and 2018 are in the most economically beleaguered counties that voted for Trump in 2016. But the biggest winners have not been the traditional manufacturing hubs where workers have been hammered this century by outsourcing and automation, federal statistics show. Instead, factory job creation has flowed to frontiers of the advanced manufacturing economy — like Nevada, home to a Tesla factory that churns out batteries for electric cars, homes and utilities — and oil-patch epicenters like Tulsa, Oklahoma. The strong growth includes large contributions from the booming craft brewing, wine and spirits industries, which the federal government classifies as manufacturing and added nearly 30,000 jobs in that time. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •
22 July / Aug
A combination of tax cuts and deregulation pushed by the Trump administration appears to have fueled a widespread, though possibly temporary, increase in the pace of job creation in manufacturing. Production jobs increased in many more counties in Trump’s first two years than under President Barack Obama from 2010 to 2016. Those gains have started slowing this year, in part under strain from the president’s trade wars with China and other countries. And it appears doubtful that Trump will achieve his campaign promise of restoring the millions of factory jobs that many states and counties lost over the last two decades. The United States lost nearly 6 million manufacturing jobs from 2000 to 2010 as companies moved production to China and other low-cost countries, increased use of machines on factory floors and scaled back operations after the 2008 financial crisis. The economy has regained just under 1.5 million, but not always in the places that lost the most. The Mountain West and the energy-rich Great Plains have
experienced much faster factory job growth than the Great Lakes states that are crucial to Trump’s hopes of winning a second term. Nearly every state west of the Mississippi added manufacturing jobs faster than the national average in 2017 and 2018, the analysis shows. Ohio,Wisconsin and Pennsylvania were all at or below average. And several Northeastern states, including New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, lost factory jobs. As a result, Nevada, the Dakotas and Utah have regained the manufacturing jobs they lost after 2000 — and then some. Pennsylvania still has only two-thirds of the factory jobs it had at the turn of the century, and Michigan is down nearly as much. Rhode Island has recovered the fewest production jobs of any state. Nearly half the counties that had more manufacturing employment in 2018 than in 2010 are in the West. But not all Western counties fared well. Los Angeles lost more than 11,000 factory jobs and nearby Ventura County nearly 4,000 in Trump’s first two years in office. Administration officials celebrate job growth in manufacturing — and credit Trump’s policies — but acknowledge that it has mostly helped more prosperous parts of the country, at least so far. “If you look, there are a heck of a lot of successful manufacturing parts of the country right now,” Kevin Hassett, the departing chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said . “But look at where they’re being created.” Hassett drew a distinction between “creative destruction” parts of the country, where the Great Recession wiped out jobs but others sprung up to replace them, and “destruction-destruction” parts, where jobs have been slow to return. Recent factory job growth,
(303) 466-3777 foothillsmachinery.com he said, was “not necessarily disproportionately in the destruction-destruction places.” Hassett said many of those left-behind areas would add more factory jobs as a result of the opportunity zone program in the tax overhaul that Trump signed in 2017, which steers investment to distressed communities. The list of counties that added the most manufacturing jobs in 2017 and 2018 highlights that divide. It is led by Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston and factories that supply the oil and gas industry. It also includes Alameda County, California, in the Bay Area, and Storey County, Nevada, which are home to Tesla plants that added jobs after Trump took office. Only two of the top 10 counties are in the industrial Midwest: Macomb County, Michigan, near Detroit, and Peoria County in western Illinois. Nearly half the job gains were in the most prosperous quintile of counties in America, according to the Economic Innovation Group, even though those counties accounted for just 40% of the nation’s factory jobs before Trump took office. And in an indication that many of the gains may be part of long-running economic trends, two-thirds of the new positions were in counties that added jobs from 2010 through 2016.— Source: Economic Innovation Group and Labor Department A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Manufacturing was BetterThan Expected in June, but Inflation Remains Muted Oil prices rebounded on June 26 after a steep fall in the previous session when OPEC and its allies’ decision to extend output cuts was not enough to counter investors’ concerns about the slowing global economy. Prices were supported by a strong U.S. stock market opening and widely watched data showing a larger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude oil inventories.

“Extending the cut by six or nine months, it doesn’t really matter if the level stays the same. If you (OPEC) really wanted to target stock you would need deeper cuts but Saudi Arabia has already 6:33levels, AM gone beyond its cut target.” The OPEC+ agreement to extend oil output cuts for nine months should draw down oil inventories in the second half of this year, boosting oil prices, analysts from Citi Research said in a note. “Keeping cuts through the end of 1Q aims to avoid putting oil into the market during a seasonal low for demand and refinery runs,” they said. Still, signs of a global economic slowdown hitting oil demand growth worried investors after global manufacturing indicators disappointed and the U.S. opened another trade front after threatening the EU with more tariffs. The S&P 500 index hit a record high at the open on June 26, boosted by healthcare stocks, as bets of an interest rate cut were spurred by the fears of a slowing global economy due to simmering trade tensions. Sharing Control With Robots May Make Manufacturing Safer, More Efficient A connected robot reaches for a colander in Bilge Mutlu’s UW– Madison lab, where studies have made robots better at working with remote human controllers. Hulking robots common to assembly line manufacturing tend to be loners. They often cut, bend and weld metal inside cages and behind barriers meant to safely separate them from human workers. “For a long time, the best factory robot has been one that you set up, and you don’t touch for two years. It does the same thing over and over, unchanged, a million times,” says Bilge Mutlu, a University of Wisconsin–Madison professor of computer science, industrial engineering and psychology. “But because those robots are built to be very powerful and very accurate, they are also very dangerous for people. You can’t get in its way.” With newly won support from NASA, Mutlu and partners at UW–Madison and Boeing are designing lower-power robots that can handle a wider range of less-rigidly defined tasks by working more collaboratively with a human operator. The UW researchers have focused on “shared control,” in which a human wired with
sensors and controls guides a robot’s arms through the course of a task like sorting objects or mixing ingredients according to a recipe. Even new users are able to operate these robots effectively, because the robots step in to help by applying things they’ve been taught about the way humans deftly coordinate the movement of two arms and hands to corral and lift and pass objects. Mutlu, graduate student Daniel Rakita and computer sciences Professor Michael Gleicher have also published methods for deploying robot-controlled cameras to give the human operator—”whether they’re standing a few feet away or they’re in Houston and the robot is on a space station,” Mutlu says—the best view of the workspace, tools, materials and the robot’s hands. With that core technology and a $3 million grant from NASA Aeronautics, the UW–Madison group—which includes Gleicher, mechanical engineering Professor Michael Zinn and industrial and systems engineering Professor Robert Radwin—will adapt robots to some of the specific types of manufacturing work that piece together a Boeing airliner. by Chris Barncard, University of Wisconsin-Madison

JM Grisley, Doosan’s Exclusive Dealer, Continues to Rack Up Happy Customers For over three-decades, JM Grisley has maintained a great partnership with Doosan. Doosan has always been very well regarded in terms of quality and low cost of ownership. Both Doosan and JM Grisley believe that quality sales and service is best delivered locally; as such, the partnership has flourished. Gone are the days when customers wouldn’t put Doosan in the upper echelon of Machine Tool builders.Today, customers are embracing the #DoosanShop movement after experiencing the reliability and expertise of the JM Grisley Service Team. JM Grisley has built a service team that is second to none with a reputation of quick response times, knowledgeable and experience technicians and application engineers, and a desire to keep our customers’ machines running. JM Grisley has established itself as part of the local manufacturing community and the company and its employees feel a strong sense of friendship with its customers. “Our customers quickly become our friends and we can’t let them down. We do what we say and say what we are going to do. I believe this is why we have seen such an uptick in Doosans in the region. Doosan machines are trustworthy, well-built machines with service to back them. This is why Doosans continue to show up in the area.”— Lars Grisley, President of JM Grisley “JM Grisley is one of our oldest and most reliable partners. The ability to provide truly local service is one of the great reasons to buy a Doosan. Don’t get me wrong, we make a great machine. But, couple that with exceptional service and your shop wins. The partnership works well because we get real time feedback from the partners in the field and then take the time to analyze and improve. We don’t sit on our hands or our reputation. Doosan is constantly innovating and improving.”— Jim Shiner Director of Sales and Marketing at Doosan There are many facets of this business model that will facilitate excellent customer support. Here are some that Doosan provides to help ensure up time:
Doosan conducts an additional “pre-delivery inspection” (PDI) of each CNC machine tool, at the factory, to ensure our customers receive consistent quality, reliability and performance.
Spindle Rebuild Center Spindles are the heart of a CNC machine, and we are approaching 100% spindle stock for our current lineup. We even have a spindle rebuild center at our New Jersey facility to keep your operations moving. Doosan Machine Tools America offers factory certified, top-of-the-line spindle analysis and rebuilds right here in the Americas. Located in New Jersey, their factory-trained experts offer remote and on-site analysis of your spindle. Spindles are rebuilt using high quality, factory-approved components and materials, including bearings exceeding a Precision 4 (P4) rating. With a standard rebuild turnaround time of 3 to 5 business days, your machine is back up and running in no time. Quality Control Before The Machine Ships:
26 July / Aug
Doosan carries over 25,720 different line items. The funny thing is, their machines are designed and built so well, they are hardly ever needed. So, why do they go to all the trouble and expense to stockpile so many parts? It all boils down to customer service. The team at Doosan refuses to let you suffer downtime a minute more than necessary. That’s not going to change no matter how old your equipment is. So, whether you have one Daewoo from the 1980s or a new fleet of chip-making Doosans that run 24/7, rest assured they carry the parts to keep them in good operating condition for a long time to come.
Hear What A Few Customers Have To Say About JM Grisley’s Customer Support “In our shop, nearly half of our machining centers are Doosan (11 of 24). For vertical mac hining, we have a Doosan DNM 750II High Precision Machining Center. In our horizontal machining department, we own a Doosan HC 400II Horizontal Machining Center with a pallet changer for high production, 4 Doosan HP 5100 Horizontal Machining Centers and 3 Doosan DHP 4000 High Precision Heavy Duty Horizontal Machining Centers. In our lathe department, we have a Doosan Lynx 220 LSYC High Performance Turning Center and a Doosan Lynx 2100 LSY both with live tooling, sub-spindle and y-axis. Since JM Grisley took over Colorado with their Doosan line a few years ago, we’ve had the pleasure of working with their team. The entire JM Grisley team, from our local Sales engineer Stuart Gill, to the 4 local Service staff (3 Service techs and 1 Applications engineer in Colorado), are just so extremely attentive and customer service focused. They are knowledgeable, and the times they don’t have the answer, they get back to us, just as they said they would. I particularly appreciate their willingness to help us, servicing machines that they didn’t even sell us. This includes older Doosans (Daewoo’s) and also other non-Doosan machines. It is a pleasure to work with people who do what they say they will do.”
Andy, Steen Machining, Westminster, Colorado
and that means not just Doosan machines; we’ve also purchased a power saw and a Southwest lathe from them. With Cary Winget, our JM Grisley Sales guy, and the entire team at JM Grisley, we consistently get honest, ethical and superior customer service. JM Grisley always takes care of us.”
Dee, MTI, Salt Lake City, Utah “I purchased the company ‘Focused on Machining’ towards the end of 2016. Early on, I purchased a used Daewoo from my uncle, who also owns a machine shop. Last year, we had a very serious crash on the machine (the machine shaft was actually sheared in half). This was my introduction to JM Grisley, the local Doosan dealer. I called them, they sent a service technician the same day, and he diagnosed the problem and ordered the parts needed to repair the machine. The parts were overnighted to us, and then the service technician arrived the next day to complete the repair. This experience was absolutely amazing to me, particularly since the company who sold us other brand machines consistently offers less than satisfactory customer service. Last year, I had plans to procure a new machine for the shop. I contacted JM Grisley with plans to purchase a small Brother machine ( It’s a line that JM Grisley also carries). After fully learning about my company’s machining requirements, Sales Engineer Steve Goodman recommended a bigger machine, a Doosan DNM 5700, with a full 40x20 table. Not only was the machine less expensive than the alternative I initially looked at, it increased our capabilities, enabling us to machine larger parts. I can’t say enough good things about JM Grisley. From the owner Lars Grisley, who has been to our shop more than once, to Cory Schanz, our Service Technician who drops by at least once a month on his way home from work, to our extremely knowledgeable Sales Engineer, Steve, who came from service, to the office staff back at their Salt Lake City office (Sara, Abby and Erika), we consistently receive outstanding customer support. And one last thing I have to add - their quotes for a new machine are clear, concise and easy to understand. With other machine tool dealers, we get quotes that are lengthy, add in features and additional pricing, take away features, and I can’t even understand what I am really getting. Working with JM Grisley is like having a partner that is more like a small family.”
“I started working with JM Gr isley bac k when Lar s Grisley’s dad Jim supported our account, more than 30 years ago. In the past, we’ve looked at competitive machines, but it always came back to the Doosan line – it’s a great machine tool line that is well priced.
Justin, Focused On Machining, Louviers, Colorado
Today, at the company I am working at, we manufacture specialized medical equipment. We buy Doosan machines whenever they have a machine that fits our requirements. We have 4 Doosan vertical mills and 1 Doosan lathe. We also buy from JM Grisley whenever we can,

Ben Wolff Is Leading The Robotics Innovator To New Products,Global Opportunity Wolff admits it’s easy to go to work. “It’s easy when you manufacture products that are meaningful, when you’re working on a product that’s cool, that’s now, and that can change the world,” he says. Originally established at the University of Utah in the early 1980s with a focus on prosthetics and biomechanics, Sarcos was spun off and came to be a part of Raytheon in 2007. “Under Raytheon, Sarcos was focused on providing products for the military,” Wolff says. When government spending dried up, particularly after sequestration, the time was ripe for Sarcos to break away and rethink its business model, and Wolff helped lead an ownership company that bought Sarcos’ assets from Raytheon. The company’s IP portfolio includes more than 300 patents and represents $265 million of R&D.

Today, staked with growth capital from GE Ventures, Caterpillar, and Microsoft, Sarcos is focused on commercializing a line of products under the Guardian brand that seem poised to fulfill this goal. The Guardian S is a surveillance and inspection robot capable of traversing over challenging terrain and through small, confined spaces. The Guardian GT is a human-controlled, dual-armed robot that can lift 1,000 pounds. And the Guardian XO resembles something from the next Iron Man movie, a wearable exoskeleton suit that can amplify a wearer’s strength and endurance. “The Guardian S is small,” explains Martindale. “It can go into an area that is less than seven inches in diameter, and it only weighs around 17 pounds. . . . Because of its camera capabilities, the Guardian S can inspect and show a 360-degree visual of an area without disruption, including manufacturing environments.” She continues, “For example, if a customer needs to inspect an HVAC system for build-up or combustible contaminants, historically that had to be done by a team of people, or at least one human worker with a flashlight in a very confined space. But with the Guardian S, our robotic system can navigate through and get an understanding of whether or not there is a problem without the risk to the manufacturing team or without having to shut the entire system down.” Salt Lake is where all assembly occurs, a major undertaking at Sarcos. “One robot could have 40 to 50 different component vendors. All of these components which we have ordered or had made especially for us come to Salt Lake,”Wolff says, noting that Sarcos also has a machine shop on-site. “We’ve been in the same location for over two decades. We’ve always made our stuff right here.”

it can easily attract new employees due to its environment, he adds. “We cannot imagine being headquartered anywhere else. Our employees love living there. It offers us a growing, vibrant community where the cost of living is still reasonable. As a business environment, it cannot be beat.” Source: Company Week
Denver Keeps ClimbingThe Ranks As ATop Tech City Denver continues to climb in the rankings of the top tech talent cities in North America. After cracking the top 10 last year of CBRE’s annual list, the Denver-Boulder region advanced two spots this year to become the eighth-best market for technology workers. The annual Scoring Tech Talent Report ranks 50 U.S. and Canadian markets according to their ability to attract and grow tech talent. Metro Denver is seeing its tech job creation outpace local supply. Over the past five years, Denver-Boulder added more than 25,000 tech jobs — representing 30.9% growth in that sector. Meanwhile, it surpassed the tech talent produced from local universities by nearly 6,500, which is resulting in an influx of tech workers coming to Colorado from other states. Denver falls behind the Bay Area and Seattle in terms of tech labor market competitiveness. As the Front Range’s demand for tech talent outpaces the local supply from area universities, quick and efficient solutions have popped up to help fill the need for tech workers. One of the major solutions has been coding boot camps, which quickly and cheaply train people how to be software developers and designers. There are many boot camps in the area, including, Galvanize, General Assembly, Flatiron School, among others. Nationally, boot camps represent about a $240 million market.
Denver ranks No. 8, with a score of 59.43, ahead of Atlanta and Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina. The San Francisco Bay Area comes in at the top with a score of 84.79, followed by Seattle (73.82); Toronto (69.88); Washington, D.C. (69.83); New York City (65.12); Austin (62.10); and Boston (60.26). The scorecard uses 13 metrics to measure each market’s attractiveness and depth of talent. Each metric is weighted by the relative importance to job creation and innovation. Last year, when Denver ranked No. 10, it had a score of 56.72. In addition to scoring well overall, the Denver region also ranked No. 5 for top markets for educational attainment. About 53% of residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. It also ranked well on a “Brain Drain or Gain” scale: By adding about 6,500 more jobs in the area than available tech graduates, it ranked in the “Brain Gain” zone. The Greater Denver area, which includes Boulder, is the 13th largest tech talent market in North America. It has a tech talent labor pool of 107,170. Tech represents 6.5% of total employment, compared to a national average of 3.7%. Colorado Springs is classified by CBRE as an up-and-coming North American tech market, seeing 14% tech employment growth over the past five years. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Work Coming To Boulder After Lockheed Martin Wins $562M Contract
U.S. government for missile production.
The Missiles and Fire Control, MFC, division of Lockheed Martin won a lucrative $561.8 million contract from the
Some of the work will be conducted in Boulder, according to the U.S. Department of Defense, but the missile systems will be produced at the Lockheed Martin Corp. manufacturing facility in Camden, Arkansas. The contract includes work on Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles and Service Life Extension Program (SLEP III).The new ATACMS rounds include sophisticated sensor technology that translates into better performance. “This new feature will allow soldiers to address area targets at depth on the battlefield,” said Gaylia Campbell, vice president of Precision Fires & Combat Maneuver Systems at MFC, in a prepared statement. MFC is headquartered in Grand Prairie where it employs thousands of North Texans. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

This deal is a foreign military sale. That means Lockheed Martin sells weapons to the U.S. government, which then decides which countries to sell them to. Each weapons program has different countries which are and are not allowed to buy specific products. Work on these two missile systems is for the militaries of Poland, Romania and Bahrain, a small island nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf, according to the DOD. In addition to Boulder and Camden, Lockheed Martin locations in Grand Prairie, Texas; Clearwater, Florida; St. Louis, Missouri; Lufkin, Texas; Windsor Locks, Connecticut; and Williston, Vermont will also see work from this deal. As part of the contract, Lockheed Martin is expanding its operations in Arkansas to be able to match demand for the ATACMS program, the company said. The expansion means a $140 million investment from the company and over 300 additional jobs for the Arkansas community. The facility currently employs about 700 people in Camden.

Apple mulling $1B deal for Intel modem business Chip giant IntelCorp. is reportedly back in talks to sell its smartphone modem business to Apple Inc., according to the Wall Street Journal. Citing unnamed sources the paper said the deal includes intellectual property as well as staff and could be $1 billion or more. Intel has been looking for a buyer for its smartphone modem business since at least April when the company said it would exit the smartphone modem business. At the time it said it would meet obligations for 4G modems but would not be releasing its forthcoming 5G smartphone modem in 2020. Intel famously missed out on supplying Apple’s original iPhone and struggled to catch up in the mobile chip business ever since. It had only recently started supplying modems to Apple after the company split from longtime supplier Qualcomm. The Qualcomm-Apple feud opened the door a bit for Intel, but the company’s modem business was reportedly losing about $1 billion a year. Apple was the only major customer for Intel’s 5G smartphone modems, and according to recent reports Intel was having trouble meeting Apple’s timelines. Plus, Apple has reportedly been working on bringing more of its chip needs in-house. The day that Qualcomm and Apple settled their dispute, Intel said it would exit the smartphone modem business. Since Intel announced its exit plans, analysts have predicted Apple would be a likely buyer.
Despite exiting the 5G smartphone modem business, Intel has said it will continue to develop products for the wider 5G ecosystem. The company, which has part of its 5G research team in Oregon, has been working with telecommunication partners and standardization bodies to ensure its technology is part of the new network infrastructure. The lab where Intel engineers develop and test new 5G technology looks more like a submarine or aircraft carrier, thanks to the steel and copper walls and heavy doors needed to keep out stray radio waves that could interfere with testing. According to the Wall Street Journal report, a deal between Intel and Apple could come in the next week. In July, Intel paused the bidding process on its modem portfolio, according to a report in IAM, a publication that tracks IP news. In May, Apple hired a pair of Intel executives who led the 5G modem business. By Malia Spencer – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The Industrial Revolution (3.0) introduced greater productivity, achieved with the help of technology; 4.0 is about using tech and efficient processes alongside more intelligent platforms. Things like IoT, AI, machine learning and big data are all being used to enhance the manufacturing field. What does this mean for specific areas of manufacturing, in particular for machining? How is Industry 4.0 going to impact machine tools and related manufacturing technology? The answers reveal that, like all of manufacturing, machining operations are heading toward a more streamlined, connected and intelligent network of machines, devices and systems. Connected processes either will replace conventional machines completely, or the connected devices will be synched with legacy systems to ensure the accessibility massive streams of data. Then, the digital content will be ingested, processed, and analyzed to improve existing operations, or to initiate entirely new ones. It also will allow human laborers to take a more hands-off approach, getting involved only when necessary. Machine tools are a significant feature of this new environment. Consider something as simple as smart lighting: When workers are involved on a machine or factory floor, the lights obviously must be on. Yet when the room is empty after a shift, those lights are most likely still on. The entire system can be automated, using motion alerts and a human presence to detect when they should be on or off.Turning off a shop’s lights can save hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars per year. Imagine if that very system were applied to other equipment and machines in a plant or machine shop? 3. Enhanced or automatic virtual metrology — Quality assurance is a huge deal in the manufacturing field and has a lot more to do with the machines and equipment in use than one might think. When a device experiences a malfunction, loses its efficiency or is just plain inaccurate, the developed goods suffer as a result. That’s why manufacturers always have a quality assurance process in place to inspect the goods or components for defects or minor errors. The problem with many of these processes, however, is that they can cause delays in production. They’re not always carried out regularly, which leads to many products being pushed through in less than ideal conditions. Industry 4.0 and the related technologies will transform this process completely by introducing real-time QA through something like an

automated virtual metrology (AVM) system. Essentially, data is collected about the conditions, quality, and state of goods, and this is combined with information about the machines and processes. It gives a more complete profile of operations and introduces a real-time element to QA inspections. Imagine manufacturing operations continuing forward even during a major QA inspection, with little to no interruptions and near-instant feedback? 4. Better human-machine interfaces — Improving the current iteration of machine and manufacturing equipment isn’t just about performance and regular operation. Also instrumental are the communication standards applied for human-machine interfaces. Most workers will be conducting day-to-day operations alongside robots and machines, commonly referred to as cobots. The future machine shop or factory floor will be extremely efficient as humans, machines and robots work side-by-side in a smooth, safe environment. To get there, however, humanenabled interfaces need to be vastly improved.Technicians will be able to remotely operate equipment and deliver commands on the fly. Reporting systems will provide real-time alerts and insights to operators, no matter where they are. 5. New machining centers — Before Industry 4.0 can really take off, the manufacturing infrastructure needs to be put in place. Every connected device in the machine shop requires a reliable, active connection to the network, whether that is private or public. Manufacturing facilities and machine shops will need to be rezoned to implement these new connectivity solutions. How do you move equipment and retool spaces, for instance, to maximize signal strength? Will signal boosters and stronger network tools need to be put in place to reach certain areas of a facility? What equipment must be upgraded entirely,

and what can be improved by syncing up IoT and third-party sensors? Industry 4.0 and its adoption will largely affect how machines are distributed within a shop or facility. Smarter, more aware environments are not a pipedream but something that is possible and more important than ever. Sensors will be used to monitor this information and find better, intelligent ways to structure a plant or shop. Optimal productivity is the way to go — Many of these solutions service have one particular benefit in general, and that’s enhanced productivity. The primary method for achieving this is to augment existing machine tools and hardware to be conducive to an intelligent environment. Ultimately, the average manufacturing facility or shop will be changed irrevocably by the rollout of industry 4.0. Ross Reels’ Sparkling New Montrose Factory Speaks To The State Of Regional Manufacturing
class fly-fishing gear. It’s a lot to take in.
To tour the new Ross Reels factory in Montrose is a bit surreal, as if you’re looking at something that’s not supposed to be there. So many voices have written off manufacturing, but here it is, one of Colorado’s finest new manufacturing facilities, on the stunning Uncompahgre River because, of course, they make world-
What may truly separate this facility, though, is the roadmap it provides for other communities. There’s a model here, with lessons to be learned. But first, what Doug and Dave Dragoo, owners of Ross parent Mayfly Outdoors, have accomplished in Montrose is eye-opening. The Dragoos celebrated the official grand opening of the new building with employees and a couple hundred of local notables, pleased as they seem not only with the new physical space but with the city’s support of the project and vision of a modern business cluster focused on the outdoor industry. Manufacturing for two of fly-fishing’s most respected brands -- Ross Reels and Abel Reels -- is now consolidated in Montrose at the Mayfly headquarters. It’s part of the Colorado Outdoors development, with a plan that envisions an outdoor industry cluster of light manufacturing, along with new workforce housing, retail, logistics, and hospitality tenants. The end goal is to foster a destination for outdoor enthusiasts and new business and commerce from the region and around the world. It’s a vision shared by the private and public sector, and here, public action has meant the difference between idea and reality. The city has offset hard expenses on roads and infrastructure and provided financial incentives for incoming firms, but it’s also a co-developer of the river assets and adjacent open space. is partnering to improve an already spectacular fishery in Montrose’s city limits. Overall, the development is a multi-institutional collaboration, with manufacturing jobs at its core. If it sounds straightforward, or easy, it’s not. The type of willful pursuit of manufacturing jobs on display in Montrose runs headlong into economic and social barriers that frame the economic development conversation in other towns in western Colorado. One involves growth -- economic growth of any kind. A strong anti-growth sentiment informs local and regional deliberations in tourism- and recreationfueled communities like Durango, Telluride, and Steamboat Springs. One consequence is that building consensus around the idea of investing city and county resources in roads, infrastructure, and other new assets to recruit new manufacturing companies is often hard. To be fair, some communities have no interest in manufacturing, even outdoor industry- related manufacturing. They prefer stronger tourism and recreation service economies, or seek a place in the new technology economy, where Google campuses and tech startups, not light manufacturing clusters, dot the landscape. It’s a worthy, modern goal. In Grand Junction, this seems to be on the minds of some. But the Makers and Producers track in Techstars’ first West Slope Startup Week points to the undercurrent of interest in the Grand Valley to combine a legacy of manufacturing with a tech-savvy future. In theory, it’s a powerful combination. New manufacturing can be a breathtaking mix of
technology, automation, and innovation. Industry clusters in the future will include companies flashing enabling software, automation, tech-driven logistics, and other advanced services. Alongside more advanced CNC shops and other new forms of prototyping and fabricating, these ‘centers of manufacturing excellence’ will be the destination for future for brands and OEMs. It won’t happen by accident. A new development in Grand Junction, Riverfront at Los Colonias Park, promises similar outcomes as Colorado Outdoors. But how aggressive will the city be in offsetting the costs of roads and infrastructure, moves that are critical to attracting new companies? Is affordable housing and workforce development tuned to the needs of manufacturing brands? These and other questions seem open. The stakes are enormous. An outdoor industry-focused commerce and manufacturing corridor, with major hubs in Grand Junction and Montrose, would put the region on the national map. It’s a vision the folks in Montrose have willed into reality. Who will be next? Bart Taylor is publisher of CompanyWeek. Reach him at btaylor@ companyweek.com.
NTMA and PMA Applaud Federal Workforce Development Grant The U.S. manufacturing industry recently received $183.8 million in workforce development grants from the U.S. Department of Labor to help create and promote partnerships among educational institutions, companies and trade associations. The grants, together with the Labor Department’s plans to award an additional $100 million in grants to further promote apprenticeships, were applauded by the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) and the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA). “There will be an estimated two million vacant manufacturing jobs by 2025, and the industry cannot close this gap on its own,” says PMA president David Klotz. “The federal programs announced mean that the government is listening to our message, that for manufacturing to continue to drive the economy, this country must invest in helping manufacturers train the next generation of workers. We encourage congress to provide funding to expand these types of programs.” “We are proud that in Arizona, NTMA is a recipient of one of the Labor Department’s workforce development grants,” says NTMA interim president Doug DeRose. “NTMA and its chapters have made workforce development a top-priority issue for more than a decade, and these grants will help our efforts to close the skills gap in our industry.” The Labor Department also made public a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to establish a process for the department to advance the development of industry-recognized apprenticeship programs (IRAPs) that would enable manufacturing associations and others to apply to the federal government to obtain the ability to certify apprenticeships themselves. Vo l vo a n d U b e r h ave collaborated on driverless cars since 2016, and the companies say the XC90 crossover is ready for autonomy because it comes with key safety features that allow Uber to install its own self-driving system. The car features several back-up systems for steering and braking and a battery back-up power system. If primary systems fail, back-ups will immediately bring the car to a stop. “We believe autonomous drive technology will allow us to further improve safety, the foundation of our company,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “By the middle of the next decade we expect one-third of all cars we sell to be fully autonomous.”

Top 5 Reasons Mountain View Machine & Welding (MVMW) Owner Jason Crook Loves His Milltronics VK4-II CNC Knee Mill: we’ve moved to the MilltronicsVK4-II, in the last few months, probably paid for half the cost of the machine!”
With the Milltronics, we have manual and CNC capabilities, with full X,Y, and Z (and a 4th axis table). The Milltronics is fully programmable with the ability to change it to manual operation. In addition, when you switch back to CNC, the tool offsets automatically adjust!
Jason also likes the Milltronics’ flexibility. The machine isn’t restricted by the sheet metal enclosure of a VMC, he says. The machine will handle small parts very well and large millwork well also. He says now you have the whole table you can hang parts off of. Milltronics, founded in the USA, in Minnesota, has a long history of building tool room mills that can be run as manual, teach or full CNC, with thousands of satisfied users. Popular in tool rooms, job shops and tool & die, these machines are very flexible and can be used for a wide variety of different parts. The lineup includes tool room mills, lathes, general purpose Vertical Machining Centers and Boring Mills.
The VK4-II is a Tool Room mill that, in essence, is a ‘Big Brother’ to a Bridgeport-style mill. It is beefier, has more versatility to do bigger jobs (on a small footprint), and the CNC is outstanding.
It was so easy for us to train ourselves on the Milltronics VK4-II. Smith Machinery’s Applications Engineer (AJ) did come to the shop for an informative 1-day training session. After that, we were good, and if we had questions, the manual was very comprehensive. Even better, theYouTube videos Milltronics makes are outstanding. “Many of my guys are young Millennials and they use the library of videos while at work, and even when they go home, to learn about a specific feature or capability.”
There are competitors to the Milltronics VK4-II, but they are typically retrofitted knee-mills. Our Milltronics VK4-II was designed as a CNC tool room mill from the ground up, so I think the performance & value we get for this machine is 2nd to none.
It is a cost effective supplemental (offload) machine for my Mazak Vertical Machining Center’s (VCN-510C) with 4th Axis. I do short production runs, and when we need to move specific jobs off of our Mazak’s to the VK4-II, so I am able to greatly increase the productivity in the shop. “In fact, one job
TheVK4-II CNC knee mill Jason purchased from Smith Machinery offers the unique Milltronics MillSlideTM that provides greater rigidity and more spindle nose to tabletop than conventional knee mills. Featuring the Milltronics Series 8200-B CNC, the VK4-II can be programmed with easy conversation, G-code or a CAM system. It has easy navigation function keys, sold model graphics, 3D pocket, DXF imports, and a variety of canned cycles such as drilling, boring, tapping, milling and more. It Is Not How Pretty The Graphs Are — What’s Important Is What Is The Data Telling You! By: Bretta Kelly, QMS Lead Auditor, AS 9100 Auditor, President BMSC, LLC Hand illustrations by Josh Kelly
On the SCALE OF IMPORTANCE, the PERFORMANCE TO OBJECTIVES outweighs MEANINGLESS DATA COLLECTION! There are requirements in the ISO 9001:2015 Standard for defining measurable objectives and key process indicators, while also measuring your performance against said metrics. Many times, companies will dedicate too much time and energy to data collection and graph aesthetics and lose track of why they are collecting the data in the first place. The actual requirements from the ISO 9001:2015 Standard are: 6.2 Quality Objectives and Planning to Achieve Them 6.2.1 The organization shall establish quality objectives at relevant functions, levels, and processes needed for the quality management system. The quality objectives shall: a. be consistent with the quality policy; b. be measurable; c. take into account applicable requirements; d. be relevant to conformity of products and services and to enhancement of customer satisfaction; e. be monitored; f. be communicated; g. be updated, as appropriate. The organization shall maintain documented information on the quality objectives. 6.2.2 When planning how to achieve its quality objectives, the organization shall determine: a. what will be done; b. what resources will be required; c. who will be responsible; d. when it will be completed;
e. how the results will be evaluated. When you are defining the objectives for your company and how to measure the effectiveness of your processes in your organization, you have to start at the very top: your Quality Policy. The main goal is to deliver quality products and services to your customers, so as to assure they are satisfied. The common-sense approach to setting and measuring meaningful objectives How each company measures their delivery performance, quality performance and performance to measure the effectiveness of each of their processes should be dependent to the company’s products, services, and data collection tools already in place. If you have an ERP system that already evaluates the data for delivery and quality, then you should automate the reporting as frequently as possible. If you are spending precious time scrubbing information that was downloaded from your ERP system to eliminate inaccurate data, then consider moving towards a discrepancy reporting system. If you do not have an ERP or Quality Management System (QMS) Software program, then Excel workbooks are usually the ideal way to collect data for your QMS. Again, we suggest a discrepancy reporting system. For example, if every late delivery to a customer is tracked in the spreadsheet with reasoning for why it is late, at the end of the month all a company would have to do is determine the fraction of late deliveries out of the total number of shipments for the month to determine the delivery performance. The reasons why it was late can be used to calculate key process performance (example; four deliveries were late due to production issues, three deliveries were late due to inaccurate quotes on lead time, etc.). These process indicators would be calculated the same way (Three quote issues for the total number of shipments for the month is the metric for quote performance).
