Your Propertync magazine is extremely pleased to inform you that the year has started off better than we could expect.

Firstly we are proud to announce our involvement as exhibitor and media partner in The International property show Dubai May 10-12-held at the World Trade Center. Propertync Magazine will be attending and promoting both the Property industry and also the Lifestyle here in North Cyprus. Working alongside some of the largest property companies from around the world, the Propertync team will be there promoting what is currently available in the North Cyprus construction industry. Working in conjunction with this will be the distribution of Propertync magazine as well as our very own Travel North Cyprus supplement. People will be able to see at a glance the beauty and attractions on offer in North Cyprus.

By very popular demand, the 3rd Propertync 2011 Awards will take place at the Rocks Hotel on October 28th. The planning stage is well under way. A black tie event not to be missed, even if you are not participating, this has to be the social event of the year, come along and enjoy. Make that note in your diary. Details will be issued very shortly.

One section added in the last issue seems to be attracting lots of attention, the classified section. As we build up the portfolio it is becoming a one stop shop. This was a suggestion from you; and we are hoping your ideas will continue.

The weather is becoming warmer, the sky blue and the sea, well! Still too cold to swim but what a fantastic sight every day. The mountains larger than life have their own attractions. So many people have chosen this part of the world to live; we are told we are so lucky, are we? Or did we make this happen?

Gatd- Girne amatÖr tiYatro derneği / Kads – Kyrenia aMateur draMatiC soCiety

ADS (Girne Amatör Tiyatro Derneği), Girne Belediyesi Tiyatrosu’nda dört gece boyunca Peter Coke’un “A Breath of Spring” adlı oyununu sergiledi. Klasik bir İngiliz komedisi olan oyun çalınan bir atkı hakkında. Büyük bir başarı yakalayan gösteri ateşli tiyatro seyircileri ve yerel medya eleştirmenleri tarafından büyük beğeni topladı. Bu son başarılarıyla cesaretlenen KADS üyeleri, yine Girne Belediyesi ve Girne Belediye Başkanı Sümer Aygün’ün sponsorluğunda sahneye konulacak bir sonraki oyun için provalara başladı bile. Yönetmen Laurie Moxley, Living Property NC’a yaptığı açıklamada “Bir sonraki oyunumuzun adı ‘Murder in Play’ olacak. Oyun, Simon Brett tarafından yazılan bir komedi. Mayıs ayında Girne’deki Kültür Merkezi’nde sahnelenecek. Sadece iki haftasonu boyunca, yani 20 Mayıs Cuma, 21 Mayıs Cumartesi, 27 Mayıs Perşembe, 28 Mayıs Cuma ve 29 Mayıs Cumartesi olmak üzere beş kez seyirciyle buluşacak. Gösteri saat 19.30’da başlayacak” şeklinde konuştu. Sizi gülmekten öldürecek bu komediyi kaçırmayın ve bilet satış gişelerinin yerini öğrenmek için yerel basını takip edin.

ADS’ latest production, performed over four nights at the Kyrenia Municipality Theatre, was A Breath of Spring, by Peter Coke. This classic British ‘laugh a minute’ comedy about a ‘stolen stole’ proved to be huge hit which received great acclaim from enthusiastic audiences and the local media critics.

Urged on by their latest success, KADS are already in rehearsal for their next production, which will again be sponsored by Kyrenia Mayor Sumer Agun and the Municipality.

Director Laurie Moxley told Living Property NC. “Our next production is ‘Murder in Play’, another comedy this time by Simon Brett. It will be staged in the Kultur Merkesi, Girne in May. There will be five performances over two weekends Fri and Sat 20th, 21st May and Thurs. Fri and Sat. 27th, 28th and 29th. Performances will start at 7.30.” Watch out in the local press for Ticket Sale outlets for this side splitting farce.

sunseeKer rallisi – KuZeY Kibris iÇin tarihi Gün / sunseeKer rallye - HistoriC first for nortH CyPrus iz bu makaleyi okuduğunuzda, Çatalköylü Serkan Coşar yurtdışında uluslararası bir motorsporları etkinliğine katılarak ilk kez Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti adına tarihi bir olaya imza atmış olacak!. Serkan, ünlü tekne üreticisi Sunseeker’e evsahipliği yapan İngiltere’nin Dorset bölgesindeki Bournemouth kasabasındaki Sunseeker Rallisi’nde Grup N Subaru Imprezza’yla yarışmış olacak. 25-26 Şubat 2011 tarihleri arasında gerçekleştirilen Sunseeker Rallisi, İngiliz Ralli Şampiyonası’nın ilk ayağı ve bu nedenle uluslararası bir statüye sahip. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta yaşayan Brian Hardie’nin yardımcı pilotluğunu yaptığı Serkan, KKTC Turizm Bakanlığı’yla üç yıllık bir sponsorluk sözleşmesi imzaladı. Sunseeker Rallisi de bu sözleşmenin bir parçası. Kuzey Kıbrıs işbirliğiyle gerçekleştirilen yarışın iki etabına “Kuzey Kıbrıs’ı ziyaret et” ismi verildi. Ayrıca, Motorfair’deki yarış parkuru boyunca Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın tanıtımı yapılarak Somerley Park’taki şık Country Mansion’da bir sergi düzenlendi.

Grup A Subaru’yla yarışan deneyimli sürücü Serkan’ın son altı yıl içinde Kuzey Kıbrıs Ralli Şampiyonası’nda ikinci ve üçüncülükleri bulunuyor. 2008 yılı içinde Grup A’yı kazandı. İç mimar olan Serkan, yarışlara iki yıl ara vererek kendi mobilya mağazasını açtı. Serkan, “Kuzey Kıbrıs Otomobil Kurumu tarafından ülkemi temsil etmek üzere seçilmiş olmak beni çok heyecanlandırdı ve çok gururlandırdı. Tüm gücümüzü kullanarak Grup N sınıfını kazanacağız! ” şeklinde konuştu. Yine deneyimli bir yarışçı olan Brian Hardie, hem İngiltere içinde hem de yurt dışında olmak üzere yaklaşık 30 yıldır yardımcı pilotluk yapıyor. Karısı Corinna’yla birlikte 2003 yılında Kuzey Kıbrıs’a taşınmış. Yarıştan önce konuşan Hardie “Serkan tüm gücünü Grup N’yi kazanmak için kullanacak. Ama benim çabam daha önce hiç İngiltere’de yarışmamış olmasından dolayı müsabakanın heyecanlı anında potansiyel dil engellerini aşmasını ve ağaçlardan uzak durmasını sağlamak!” şeklinde yorum yaptı. Fotoğraflardan da görebileceğiniz gibi ekip, Dorset’e seyahatlarından önce Lefkoşa dışında yaptıkları provalarda birkaç etabı kazasız belasız tamamlamayı başardı. Ekibe bir başka destek de yerel işadamı Altan Hüseyin’den ve kendisinin Küçük Erenköy’deki Port Cyprium Marina projesinden geldi. “Bu ülkemin, işletmemin ve ortaklarımın tanıtımını yapmak için altın bir fırsat” şeklinde konuşan Hüseyin, “Serkan, Brian ve araba yarış günü 40 binden fazla insan tarafından izlenecek. atalkoy’s Serkan Coşar made history for the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus by taking part in an international motorsport event, overseas!. He piloted a Group N Subaru Imprezza in Rallye Sunseeker based in Bournemouth, Dorset, UK, the home of Motor Cruiser manufacturer Sunseeker. Rallye Sunseeker, which took place on 25 & 26 February 2011 is the first round of the British Rally Championship and therefore takes on international status.

Co-driven by North Cyprus-based Brian Hardie, Serkan’s drive formed part of the three-year sponsorship agreement by North Cyprus Tourism with Rallye Sunseeker.

This sees the rally being run in association with North Cyprus, two stages of which are named ‘Visit North Cyprus’, along with a promotional presence along the rally route and at Motorfair, an Exhibiton held in the grounds of classy Country Mansion, Somerley Park.

Serkan is a seasoned rally driver in the North Cyprus Rally Championship campaigning a Group A Subaru, twice reaching 2nd and 3rd overall in the past six years; and winning Group A in 2008. An interior designer he took a break from competition for two years to set up his furniture retail business. He says “Being chosen to represent my country by KKTOC (North Cyprus Touring & Automobile Club) has so excited me and given me a great honour. We are going to go all out for the Group N Class win!”

Brian Hardie, also an experienced rally man, has been co-driving for around 30 years, both in the UK and abroad. He relocated to North Cyprus with his wife Corinna in 2003. Prior to the Rallye Hardie commented, “Serkan might be going all out for the Group N win but my main concern, as he has never rallied in Britain, is to make sure we overcome potential language barriers in the heat of battle and stay out of the trees!” The pair managed to complete a couple of ‘stages’ unscathed during a rehearsal on the outskirts of Lefkosa prior to their departure for Dorset, as our exclusive pictures clearly show; Extra backing was provided by local businessman Altan Houssein and his Port Cyprium Marina project in Küçük Erenköy. “This is a golden opportunity to promote my country, my business and those of my associates,” commented Mr. Houssein. “Serkan, Brian and the car will be seen by over 40,000 people on the day and potentially by half a billion people through worldwide TV exposure! Now people will realise that North Cyprus really does exist.”

George Piddell RIP Huzur içinde uyu George Piddel eçtiğimiz ilkbahar başında, Uluslararası Anlaşmalı Elektrik Mühendisi ve Çatalköy sakini George Piddell yetmişinci doğumgününe sadece iki hafta kala acı bir şekilde aramızdan ayrıldı. George bir müddettir birçok ciddi rahatsızıkla mücadele ediyordu. Oysa ki birkaç aydır Cambridge’teki Addenbrookes Hospital’da tedavi gören Piddell’in durumunda son zamanlarda düzelme görülmüştü. Bu nedenle Piddel, eşi Brenda’yla beraber Girne tepeleri eteklerinde, Çatalköy’ün hemen üzerindeki Bufavento bölgesindeki sevimli villasına geri dönmüştü. Çift buraya hem dostlarıyla birlikte Noel’i geçirmek hem de parlak Kuzey Kıbrıs kış güneşinin tadını çıkarmak için dönmüştü. Brenda Piddel, Living Property NC dergisine yaptığı açıklamada “Hastanede geçirdiği o kadar zamandan ve İngiltere’deki zorlu kış şartlarından sonra, George Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta zaman geçirmekten çok keyif alıyordu. Bu yüzden eski bir sorunun yeniden ortaya çıkması ve bu kez onu alıp götürmesi bizim için büyük bir şok ve süpriz oldu” şeklinde konuştu.

Brenda ayrıca George’un son günlerini geçirdiği Lefkoşa’daki Cyprus Life Hospital yönetim ve personeline ve defin işlerini organize eden İngiliz Mezarlığı Komitesi’ne de minnettarlığını belirtti.

“Mezarlık Komitesi üyesi Tim Harris örnek olunacak bir yardım ve destek gösterdi” şeklinde konuşan Brenda Piddell, “Ayrıca, kendisinin hazırladığı Karaoğlanoğlu’ndaki Greenhill Mezarlığı’ndaki tören çok güzeldi. Kendisine ve tüm iş arkadaşlarına minnettarlığımı belirtmek isterim” dedi. Cenazeden sonra ailesinin yaşadığı yer olan Essex’teki Sawbridgeworth’e dönen Brenda bölge kilisesinde düzenlenecek anma törenine katıldıktan sonra yazı geçirmek için Kuzey Kıbrıs’a geri dönecek. George Piddell’in vefatından sonra geride elektrikçi olan oğlu Lee ve aile hizmetleri sosyal yardım uzmanı kızı Laura kaldı.

nternational Contract Electrical Engineer and Catalkoy resident George Piddell sadly passed away in early Spring, just two weeks away from his seventieth birthday. George had been ill for sometime with a variety of serious ailments. For many months he had been receiving treatment at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge and seemed to be on the mend. So he and wife Brenda returned to their lovely villa under the Kyrenia Hills in the Buffavento area above the charming village of Catalkoy.

The couple arrived in good time to spend Christmas here with friends whilst soaking up the glorious North Cyprus winter sunshine. ‘George was really enjoying his time here in North Cyprus, following all that time in hospital and the severe winter conditions in England.’ Brenda Piddell told Living Property NC. ‘So it came as a great shock and surprise when he had a recurrence of an old problem, which eventually did for him. Brenda went on to express her gratitude to the Management & Staff at the Cyprus Life Hospital in Lefkosa who tended to George in his final days; and the British Cemetery Committee who handled all the arrangements for his interment. ‘Tim Harris from the Cemetery Committee was a paradigm of help, support, compassion and practical realism’ said Brenda Piddell. ‘Moreover, the service he arranged at the Greenhill Cemetery at Karaoglanoglu was beautiful; I’m so grateful to him and his colleagues.’

Brenda has returned to the family home in Sawbridgeworth in Essex to arrange a Memorial Service to George in the local Parish Church, after which she will return to spend the summer in North Cyprus.

George Piddell is also survived by his son Lee, an Electrician and his daughter Laura, a Family Services Social Worker.

Mutfak yönünden “Evde sakin bir akşam geçirelim” şeklinde bir fikir geldi. Ancak muhabiriniz “Kesinlikle olmaz. Tarz sahibi bir şekilde kutlama yapmak için dışarıya çıkacağız” şeklinde yanıtladı.

“Ancak nereye?”. Kahretsin, yine aynı soru, nereye? Öncelikle kriterlerimizi belirleyelim: İyi yemek, şık bir ambiyans, canlı müzik, geniş bir içecek seçeneği, uzman ve sıcakkanlı personel, iyi bir arkadaş grubu, merkezi bir yerde, havai fişenk gösterisine gidip dönebilmenizi sağlamak için yakın ve uygun fiyatlı! Ne şans ki bu kriterlere uygun olarak seçtiğimiz altı mekanın da hepsi tamamen doluydu. Tam “evde” seçeneğini planlamak üzereydik ki, Andy telefonda rezervasyon iptali nedeniyle bize yer verebileceğini söyledi. Tamamdır – Efendi’deki gece muhteşemdi. Tüm kriterlerimizi karşıladı ve özellikle yemek öncesi şampanya kokteyli ve gece yarısı maytaplarını da içeren kişi başı £50’lik fiyatı çok uygundu. Yeni yılınız kutlu olsun.

here to go to celebrate and bring in the New Year with style? A perennial question for residents in North Cyprus, which always presents a bit of a dilemma.

There are simply so many good venues to choose from as a glance at the classified ads in the local papers will show. Then there’s the free Municipality Fireworks display in Kyrenia Town centre at midnight, an event not be missed at any price. “Let’s have a quiet night at home.” Came a suggestion form the area of the kitchen. “No chance, we’re going out to celebrate in style.” Countered your reporter. “But where?” Damn, here we go again, where?

So, let’s establish some criteria here. Good food, a stylish ambience, live music, good range of beverages, efficient and friendly staff, nice company, local, handy for a stroll to the fireworks and back, affordable! Luckily, six venues selected themselves based on these requirements, but all were fully booked, hardly surprising. Then just before the ‘at home’ option was about to be planned, Andy phoned to offer four cancellations.

Done – and what a good night it turned out to be at Efendi. All criteria fully satisfied in every sense of the particular and at £50 per person all in, including pre-dinner champagne cocktails and more sparkles at midnight, wonderful value. Happy New Year.

Emma Grove Inn’de Emma at The Grove Inn uzey Kıbrıs eğlence sahnelerine bir başka yetenekli şarkıcı daha katıldı. Müzik başladığında muhabiriniz şanslı bir şekilde yakışıklı Hüseyin’in yönetimindeki Çatalköy’deki Grove Inn’de akşam yemeği yiyordu.

Emma’nın “Akşam Yemeği Eğlencesi Düzeni”ni kim ortaya çıkarmışsa ne yaptığını biliyormuş. Çünkü Emma’nın sunduğu program çevreyle mükemmel bir şekilde uyum sağlıyor. Emma’nın akşam yemeği sırasında seçtiği müzikler yumuşak ve melodiliydi. Daha sonra tarzı biraz hareketlendi. Kahveler alındıktan hemen sonra da yorumladığı dans müziği seçkisi kesinlikle çok uygundu. Sohbet ederken dinleyebileceğiniz bir melodi ve dans ederken eşlik edebileceğiniz bir ritim mükemmel bir zamanlama ve şekilde sunuldu. Emma’ya daha önceden kaydedilmiş olan bir müzik sistemi eşlik ediyor. Ancak bu kesinlikle bir karaoke değil! Her şarkıya kendi eşsiz tarzı ve kişiliğini katan parlak bir yorumcuyu dinledik.

Yaz sezonunun başlaması ve bilindik mekanların en iyi yorumcuyu kapmak için yarışmaya başlamasıyla birlikte Emma da KKTC’de iyi iş yapacağa benziyor.

et another talented songstress has arrived on the entertainment scene in North Cyprus. Your correspondent was lucky enough to be dining at Catalkoy’s Grove Inn, under the management of the charming Hussein, when the music started. Whoever produces Emma’s ‘Dinner Entertainment Set’ knows what they are doing as the programme she performs is exactly in keeping with the surroundings. Emma’s selection during dinner is soft and melodious, later she liv-

ens up a bit and then just after coffee her dance music choices are entirely appropriate. So, melody with conversation and rhythm to dance to, delivered with excellent timing and perfect pitch. Emma is accompanied by a pre-recorded sound system, but this no Karaoke Kid! This is a polished performer who brings her own unique style and personality to every popular ditty. She’ll do well here in the TRNC as the tourist season kicks in and all the usual venues compete for the best entertainers.

NCCCT – Morning Coffee at The Savoy Ottoman Hotel KKKHYD – The Savoy Ottoman Hotel’de sabah kahvesi uzey Kıbrıs Kanser Hastalarına Yardım Derneği her ayın ikinci Salı günü kahve sabahı etkinliği düzenliyor. Son zamanlarda Girne merkezindeki ultra şık mekan Savoy Ottoman Hotel derneğin sadık destekleyicileri ve yardımcıları için özellikle bir çekim merkezi haline geldi. Living Property NC dergisinin güvenilir kaynalardan aldığı bilgiye göre düzenlenen organizasyonda 400 fincandan fazla kahve yudumlandı ancak kaç ton lezzetli hamur işini tüketildiği bir devlet sırrı. Ancak stand kiraları, harçlar, yardımlar ve Rod ve Carol Lloyd tarafından düzenlenen piyango sonucunda 2205TL toplandığını biliyoruz. KKKHYD tarafından toplanan her kuruş KKTC’deki tüm kanser hastalarının tedavisinde ihtiyaç duyulan bir ekipmanın satın alınmasında kullanılıyor.

he second Tuesday morning in every month (with the odd exception) is when the North Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust holds its monthly Coffee Morning. Recently the ultra stylish Savoy Ottoman Hotel in Central Kyrenia proved to be an irresistible attraction for the trust’s faithful band of supporters and helpers. Living Property NC is reliably informed that over 400 cups of coffee were supped during the morning – how many metric tones of delightful pastries were consumed remains a state secret. What we do know is that 2205TL was raised from stand rentals, fees, donations and the raffle organized by Rod and Carol Lloyd.

Every kuros raised by NCCCT goes towards the purchase of essential equipment for the treatment of cancer sufferers across all communities in the TRNC.

Kleftiko Kulübü’nde Burns Yemeği / Kleftico Club Burns Lunch aklaşık olarak yirmi arkadaşın katıldığı öğle yemeği organizasyonu her ay Girne’nin popüler mekanı Old Grapevine Restaurant’ta düzenleniyor. Her an her yerde karşınıza çıkabilecek olan John Wyn Roberts tarafından organize edilen öğle yemeklerinde genelde kleftiko veya Fish ‘n Chips tercih edilir. Sonrasında her zaman bir konuşmacı veya bir etkinlik yer alır. Yakın zamanlarda düzenlenen Burns Yemeği etkinliğinin menüsü Haggis ‘N Neeps ve biftek turtasından oluşuyordu. Yemeklerin üstünden cömert porsiyonlardan oluşan malt viski içildi. Scott Kennedy Haggis’le ilgili güzel bir konuşma yaptı.

Sonrasında İskoç şairlerle ilgili zevli bir konuşma yapan Karşıyakalı Don Campbell Thompson’u dinlemek için tüm üyeler uyanıktı. ome twenty or so chaps meet for lunch once each month at Kyrenia’s popular Old Grapevine Restaurant. Organised by the ubiquitous John Wyn Roberts, the chaps usually dine on Kleftico (hence the name) or Fish ‘n Chips; then there is always a speaker or an event with a difference. Recently they were entertained to a Burns Lunch of Haggis ‘N Neeps, followed by Steak Pie, washed down with generous portions of Single Malt Whisky. The address to the Haggis was given in fine style by Scott Kennedy.

The members were all still awake to listen to an enjoyable speech given by Karsyaka’s Don Campbell Thompson who spoke endearingly about the Scottish Bard. Often quoting from Burns’ poetry (who was in his prime for ten years from age 17) Don concentrated on the Alloway Farmers contribution to Scottish culture in the Age of Enlightenment, rather than dwell on his excesses and eventual decline in to poverty and an early demise. A fine and entertaining luncheon; would the Bard of Avon warrant such an occasion by the ‘sassenachs’? His birthday is 23rd April, St Georges Day! Answers please.

It used to be a good spot for a good drink, honest food and a chance to watch UK sport on TV… and a fun day in the water during the summer months. Well, it’s changed. This is now Eleanor Rigbys, a fine dining venue with a Beatles theme. The owner obviously is a fan of the Fab Four as the menu, the décor and the music all feature the Mop Haired Lads from Liverpool. Strawberry Fields for dessert – gedditt? Let it Be is a rare steak and so on. If you are a Beatles fan, you will love it – if you are ambivalent about sixties music, don’t worry, the food is excellent, the service first class and the prices realistic. Recently we enjoyed a Poached Salmon starter, Steak, Chicken and Liver dishes all of which were superb. Chef Terry Baker visited our table to enquire if we had enjoyed our meal – all replied in the affirmative which seemed to please him no end. This is obviously a cook who places customer satisfaction high on his list of priorities, which seems appropriate, as tells us he has worked at some top Michelin Star Restaurants in London and elsewhere. It shows.

erry Thomas ve eşi Fatma, Kuzey Kıbrıs’a 1980 yılında geldi.

Yerleşmelerini tamamlar tamamlamaz her ikisi de öğretmenlik yapmaya başladı; Terry İngilizce ve Fatma tarih öğretmenliği… Terry kendi işini kurarak internet servis sağlayıcılığı hizmeti vermeye başladı. Fatma ise 30 yıl boyunca Lefkoşa’da öğretmenlik yaptıktan sonra kısa bir süre önce (Şubat 2011) emekliye ayrıldı. Bugünlerde aile, kızları Alison, iş arkadaşları Ferdi, Nigel, Shahrzad, Farzad ve ofisin köpeği Boncuk da dahil olmak üzere, internet servis sağlayıcısı şirketleri olan Sunnycyprus.net’in 15’inci kuruluş yıldönümünü kutluyorlar. erry Thomas and his wife Fatma arrived in North Cyprus in 1980. Having settled in and started a family, the couple became school teachers, he English and Fatma History. Terry went on to establish an internet service provider business, Fatma has just retired (February 2011) from her teaching post in Lefkosa after 30 years.

Now, the family, including daughter Alison, with colleagues Ferdi, Hawk, Nigel, Shahrzad, Farzad and Boncuk the office pooch have celebrated the fifteenth year of the founding of the ISP business Sunnycyprus.net. Terry has much to tell about the early days of the Internet in Cyprus, including the difficulties experienced and solutions created with HIS first provider Eastern Mediterranean University. The company became a support team for EMU’s internet services when the whole of the TRNC had a backbone to METU running at 9.6kbits/s.

It offered “email to fax” services on a volunteer basis in the mid-tolate nineties. Later, Terry officially launched Surf Internet Education Centre at No.13 Vakiflar Ishani, Kyrenia, an all-ages education centre on 13th February 1996. Free tuition was offered to children supported in part by the sponsorship provided by private students. Sunnycyprus.net became an Internet Service Provider initially offering dial-up services which were then phased out by 2005. To overcome infrastructure problems and provide broadband links, wireless services were launched from a single location on 13th February 2003.

Continued expansion since means the company now covers an area from Kayalar in the west to Yeni Erenkoy in the east. Further expansion in to wired broadband with the introduction of ADSL services were introduced in 2008. A former Communications Officer with the RAF, serving in Cyprus during very sensitive days following 20th July 1974, Terry Thomas is a mine of knowledge concerning the early days when the TRNC began to emerge as a viable self-governing state. He promises that “… one of these days I’ll put it all down on paper, so that people will understand what really went on during those hectic, but exciting days.”

his feisty lady has single handedly raised over TL2000 for this worthy charity over the autumn and winter months.

The Foundation which Maureen supports is named after Kemal Saracoglu, a bright 12 year old lad who, as his Doctor and Parents thought went down with a bout of Mumps. It transpired that poor Kemal had in fact developed blood cancer which meant he had to go to Turkey and London for treatments and transplants. Maureen was so moved by the story of Kemal and the efforts made on his behalf, including by Greek Cypriots, that she vowed to do all she can to A. Warn people of the signs of blood cancers and B. Alleviate the agony and uncertainty suffered, especially by children who contact this killer disease.

“More importantly” she says, “people should know that cancer is curable, if it is spotted and treated early.” She told Living Property NC. “If the right equipment and experience had been available in North Cyprus, Kemal’s suffering could have been eased considerably and his life saved – I hope in my own small way this can be put right!” Good on yer Mo! Askeri bando, resmi geçit yapan askerler, çiçekler ve siyasilerin konuşmaları, özellikle o günleri çok iyi hatırlayan izleyiciler için çok duygusal anların yaşanmasına neden oldu.

n impressive Ceremony took place in Kyrenia recently to remember the Martyrs of Limassol who fell during intercommunal strife in Cyprus during the 1960’s. A Military Band, smart Marching Soldiers, beautiful Floral Displays and Politicians Speeches all combined to create a most emotional event, especially for some members of the audience who well remember those days. The ceremony ended with the recital of poems by students which added a poignant touch for this special rememberance day for Turkish Cypriots from Limassol who have made Kyrenia their home.

It was a chance holiday by Jodie’s parents that got the Hoyles feeling less than satisfied with their lives in the UK. Having been to South Cyprus on holiday, they did not realise that there were two parts to the island. It was Jodie’s parents’ video diary of their trip that made Jon and Jodie realise that they could give themselves and their son Jake a better future in a safer environment, as where they were in Essex they were feeling less safe and secure.

came back to the island to have a look at properties for themselves and for Jon and Jodie. They saw a number of properties but when John and Jodie came, they had narrowed it down to four, and decided to go ahead with the property that they now live in.

Having made the decision, they went back to the UK to sort out the sale of their house, packing and generally sorting everything out, for the next time they arrived in North Cyprus was when it was time to move into the house. They were not the only ones to move however, as Jodie’s parents also moved to Lapta, but that was back in 2007.

As the time has passed, Jon and Jodie have decided that this was the right decision and Jake, having been 3 when they

Jodie ise 6 Eylül 2010’da doğan Jaya’ya annelik yapmak için evde kalıyor. Kuzey Kıbrıs’ta dünyaya gelen Jaya sağlıklı ve mutlu bir kız bebek.

Daha önce İngiltere’de rugby oyuncusu olan Jon, Kuzey Kıbrıs’a geldikten sonra Pumalar’a katılarak hem çalışmaların hem de maçların tadını çıkarıyor.

Jodie ise çocukları babalarını izlemek ve desteklemek için maçlara götürüyor.

Peki, özledikleri birşeyler var mı? Sadece dükkanlar ve dostları... Ancak, başka şartlarda arkadaş olmak bir yana tanışma şansları bile olmayacak değişik yaş gruplarından birçok yeni arkadaş edindiler. Dükkanlar konusunda ise; Jon daha az dükkan olduğu için çok memnun!

Hoyles ailesi Kuzey Kıbrıs’ın yaşamak, çocuklarını büyütmek ve hayatın tadını çıkarmak istedikleri yer olduğuna karar verdi. O yüzden buradalar.

Jon was previously a rugby player in the UK, and since coming to North Cyprus he has joined the Pumas, enjoying both the training and the matches, with Jodie taking the children to watch and cheer on their dad.

So is there anything that they miss? Only the shops and friends, but they have made new friends of all different ages, people that they would not have had the opportunity of meeting let alone becoming friends with. Shops, Jon is please that there are less!!

The Hoyles family have decided that North Cyprus is where they want to be, to raise their family and to enjoy their lives, and this is where they are staying.

The “secret” garden...

Yakın zamanda arkadaşlarıma yaptığım ziyaret sırasında uzaktan bakınca dümdüz çatısı ve eski usül panjurlarıyla “eski usül Kıbrıslı” gibi görünen bir evi görmeye davet edildim. “Yol üzerinde” çok güzel bir ev olmasına rağmen benim gibi bir bahçe meraklısının hayal kırıklığı yaşamasına neden olacak özelliği bahçesinin olmamasıydı. Ancak, iç mekana adımımı atar atmaz kendimi aniden evin arka tarafında buldum. Dışarısı ancak ve ancak mini bir cennet olarak tanımlanabilirdi!

Eğer biryerlerde mükemmler bir içbahçe varsa, kesinlikle bu evdedir. Birçoğumuz büyük bir bahçeye sahip olabilecek kadar şanslı değiliz. Hatta apartmanlarda yaşıyorsak ve büyük bir balkonumuz veya dışarıda küçük bir alanımız varsa işte size mükemmel iç avluyu ve gizli bahçeyi yaratmanın yolları. İç avlu bahçelerinde en önemli şey detaylara dikkat etmektir. Daha büyük bahçelerde yumuşak-odaklama tekniğiyle gözden kaçabilecek her seçenek, boyut küçüldükçe çok daha fazla önem kazanır. İç avlu peyzajının amacı alanın olduğundan daha büyük ve derin görünmesini sağlayacak bir manzara yaratmaktır.

Ziyaretçinin tüm resmi görmek yerine, detaylara odaklanmasını teşvik eder. İç avlu bahçelerinde yükseklik sorunu vardır. Çünkü büyük bitkiler yetiştirmek için yeterli alanınız yoktur. Bu sorunla başa çıkmak için en iyi yöntem bitkilerinizi konteynerlerde yetiştirmektir.

When visiting with friends recently, I was invited to see a house that from the outside seemed quaint in “old style Cypriot” way.

That is, flat roof , old style shutters etc. A very pretty house, but alas (for a keen gardener like me) no sign of a garden, the house itself was actually “on the road”. I stepped into the cool interior and was promptly led through to the back of the house and outside into what can only be descibed as a mini paradise!!

If anyone had the perfect Courtyard Garden – then this house had it. Many of us are not lucky enough to have a large garden – or indeed live in apartments , but if you have a large balcony or small space outside then here is how to create your perfect courtyard, secret garden: In courtyard gardens, attention to detail is the focus. Larger gardens can get away with the soft-focus approach but when you rein in the size every choice becomes important.

The aim of courtyard landscaping is to produce a vista that makes the area appear larger and deeper than it actually is. It encourages the visitor to not only see the overall picture but to focus in on the detail.

Courtyard gardens can suffer from height problems because you don’t have the room to grow large plants. The best way to counteract this is by growing many plants in containers. Container plants add multiple dimensions to a courtyard landscape by introducing more colour, shape, width and height and complement the style in which you’ve chosen to forge. Add shade by using a vine or jasmine covered pergola – but not over the whole courtyard – if the courtyard is small then this can look and feel claustrophobic.

Bitkilerin arasına serpiştireceğiniz mavi ve beyaz renge boyanmış kiremitler mekana eski bir “Osmanlı” havası katacaktır Akıllıca kullanılacak seramik döşeme tekniği de iç avlunuzu daha geniş gösterebilir. Desenli ve parlak renkli seramikler yerine sade ve küçük boyutlu seramikleri tercih etmek mekanınızın “olduğundan daha büyük” görüntüsüne yardımcı olacaktır.

Seramik döşenmiş oturma alanı ve bitki alanı şeklinde mekanınızı ikiye bölerek kontrast yaratabilirsiniz. Örneğin, yarım kalmış bir kemer kullanabilirsiniz. İç avluda “eski bir harabeden” daha romantik birşey olamaz. Arkadaşımın eşinin deyişiyle, eğer “eski bir harabe” eksikliği hissederseniz, kendisi size kayınvalidesini ödünç verebilir!!!

As a rule (and rules should not be slavishly copied) leaving the central space free will make the courtyard seem larger, roomier and less crowded. Most people though will want a focal point: If you use a tree as a main focal point, build seating around it to increase visitor friendly space. Likewise a fountain with seating around it, so one can dabble ones fingers whilst sipping on a cool drink will really be a treat! You can also use a perspective trellis or a wall mural to give the illusion that the garden continues beyond its boundaries. Mirrors have been used to good effect for years at the Chelsea Flower Shows. Chelsea designers work with fairly confined plots and make use of mirrors to increase the amount of light and to create a feeling of spaciousness. A cleverly spaced mirror, the edges blurred by plants can give the impression of a garden beyond.

If your courtyard is surrounded by high walls – use trellis to soften and mirrors to give depth. Fix wall pots and fill with tumbling plants. Painted roof tiles hung amongst the plants add to the old “Ottoman” look- as do the beautiful blue and white tiles – fixed randomly here and there.Clever use of paving can also expand your courtyard. Plain, small tiles rather than patterned and brightly coloured tiles will add to the “larger than it is” look. Dividing the space into two areas – say a paved seating area and a planted area for contrast – try a half built arch for instance – nothing is more romantic than an “old ruin” in the courtyard. And as my friend’s Husband quipped – if you are lacking an “old ruin” he can always lend you his Mother-in –law!!! pnc 29

on sayımızda söylediğim gibi, renklerele ilgili mini yazı dizimizi bitirdik. Bu benim için zor oldu çünkü bana göre renk, iç mimarlığın en önemli unsuru. Ben sadece renklerle ilgilenmek istiyorum.

Peki bugünkü yazımız ne ile ilgili olsun? Renkle ilgili olamayacağı kesin...

Ama bir dakika bekleyiniz, gri bir renk sayılmaz.

Siyah sayılmadığına göre gri de sayılmaz. Sayılırmı?

Diğer yandan teknik olarak da beyaz işik spektrumun tüm renklerinden oluşan birşey. O zaman gri de renk sayılabilir. Ama gri rengini gökkuşağında bulamazsınız ki. O zaman kesinlikle bir renk sayılmaz.

Güzel! Söz verdiğim gibi bu sayıda renklerden değil, griden bahsedeceğim.

Peki gri sizce sıkıcı mı?-iki ucun ortası-donukdepresyona yol açan ve katı mı?

Gri nötürdür, bu doğru. Fakat bu iyi birşey, herşeye yakışabilir. Zarif ve dengeli, şık ve sofistike. Grinin tüm tonları güzel ve nötür arka planlar olarak kullanılabilir. Beyaz yerine açık gri, siyah yerine koyu griler kullanılabilir. Yeni beyazdır aslında gri.

Gri, Feng Shui’de metal elementine ait ve en güzel sonuçları batınızda, çocuk ve yaratıcılık için, veya kariyeriniz için kuzeyinizde kullandığınız zaman elde edebilirsiniz.

Gümüş gibi ılık bir gri, oturma odanıza, ana girişinize veya evdeki ofisinize Feng Shui enerjisini getirebilir. Feng Shui tarzını kullanırken yatak odanızda fazlaca gri koymaktan kaçının. Ortamı ısıtmak yada serinletmek için,grinin içerisine az miktarda renk katabilirsiniz. Az ışıklı odalarda ılık tonlar kullanılmalı ama bol ışık alan odalarınızda maviye çalan griler kullanılabilir.

Böylece bir huzur duygusunu yaratabilirsiniz.

Gümüş ise grinin akrabası olur. Gri ortamlarda aksesuar veya mobilyada kullanıldığında harika sonuçlar elde edilebilir.

o as I said in the last article, we have finished with the mini season of colour articles. This is hard for me to do as I see colour as the most important part of interior design, just want to write about colours.

So what to write about today? Can’t be colour . . . . Just a minute, grey isn’t a colour is it?

Black isn’t, so grey can’t be - can it? On the other hand technically white light is made from all colours of the spectrum, so could be a colour and therefore grey could be a colour. But then again, grey isn’t one of those spectrum colours so it can’t be a colour. Great I am not going to write about a colour as promised, I am going to write about grey! Grey is boring isn’t it? It is middle-of-the-road, solid, depressing, dull days and mostly nothing.

Grey is neutral - yes, but that it is a good thing, it goes with everything; It is elegant and balanced, smart and sophisticated. All shades of grey can be good, neutral background colours. Use lighter greys in place of white and darker grey in place of black. Grey is the new white! In Feng Shui, grey belongs to the element of Metal and it is best used to the west of your space for creativity and children, or north for your career. Warm, silvery grey can bring feng shui energy into your living room, main entry or home office. Avoid the feng shui use of the colour grey in big proportions in any of your bedrooms. Grey is a colour that is best used as an accent colour in feng shui, as it brings a crisp, sharp energy that can enliven and “clear” any space.

Grey is at its most versatile when used with other colours, as it enhances their effect. Light greys with pastel shades of pink, blue, lavender, and green have a feminine quality. Darken those accent colours for a more masculine feel. Grey will also tone down bright hues without lessening their vibrancy. It’s a good choice for both a primary design colour and for accent pieces.

You can also mix a small amount of another colour with grey to warm it up or cool it down.

If you don’t have much natural light in your room, stick with warm shades of grey. But in a room with a lot of natural light, cool greys (or blue greys) can bring a sense of calm to a space. Silver is a relative of grey and looks great when used in accessories or furniture in a grey environment.

That is really it for colour. Next time we go back to furniture.

fter walking into BURHAN FURNITURE STORE and seeing all the wonderful hand made furniture and accessories, we just couldn’t leave without asking for a little information on the patchwork upholstery they had made.

Thankfully Miss Nadir was kind enough to supply us with some : We have been creating patchwork upholstery for four years now. We generally use cloth we obtain during our travels India,Thailand and Indonesia. We sometimes also use our own cloth and material. Mostly these cloths are not large enough to completely cover a whole large sofa and we therefore have to create combinations with other cloths such as denim, linen, velvet, cotton and chenille.

We truly enjoy making patchwork and due to their different designs and colors we believe they can find a place in all homes work places and even restaurants, whether classic or modern. Even one piece is enough to fill the whole area with positive energy and make people fill a lot happier .

URHAN FURNITURE’e gittik gördük, ayrılmak istemedik. O kadar güzel el yapımı mobilya ve aksesuarlar vardı ki, biraz bilgi almadan yapamadık. Nadir Hanım bizi kırmadı, yama işi koltuklar hakkında bize kısa bilgiler verdi: Son dört senedir yama işi doşeme yapıyoruz. Döşeme kumaşlarımızı genellikle Hindistan, Tayland ve Endonezya’ya olan seyahatlerimizde gezip teker teker toplayarak elde ediyoruz. Kendi kumaşlarımızdan da yarattığımız oluyor tabii ki. Üzerinde çalışması cok daha zahmetli olan bu kumaşlar boyut olarak bir büyük koltuğu döşemeye yeterli olmadığı için de başka kombinasyonlar yaratmak durumunda kalıyoruz. Örneğin kot kumaşı, keten, kadife, koton veya sonil kumaşlarla kombinasyonlar yapıyoruz.

Yaptığimız işten çok zevk alıyoruz ve patchwork koltukların farklı desen ve renklerinden dolayı her evde, iş yerinde veya restorantta, modern veya klasik, bir yeri olabileceğine inanıyoruz. Tek bir parça bile olsa tum mekanın atmosferine kattıkları pozitif enerji ile insanları daha mutlu hissettirdiklerini düşünüyoruz.

wners of the soon-to-be-completed Karpaz Gate Marina in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), part of the Karpaz Bay Resort, have announced plans for a new luxury hotel and beach club on the site. The proposed plan would see a high-class beach hotel constructed above the beach club, just east of the marina, which would open in 2012. This would follow the completion and May 2011 launch of the marina and the buildings which encompass the marina village, restaurants, chandlery, shops and boutiques.

Further details of the Karpaz Hotel and Beach Club will be announced when the marina launches in May.

Turizm Çevre ve Kültür Bakanı Kemal Dürüst, Karpaz bölgesindeki bazı turizm yatırımları ve tesislerinde incelemelerde bulundu. February 2011 – Karpaz Gate Marina, the first-ever luxury yacht marina in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is progressing well and due for completion, on schedule, in May 2011.

The owners are celebrating their progress by offering a limited number of trial berths, free of charge, for periods of up to one year. During the past six months, significant progress has been made on the development, which will offer berths for 300 yachts, including 16 for super yachts up to 65m in length. The main and secondary breakwaters, which have been designed to ensure a sheltered harbour for yachts needing either a home port or visiting berth in the eastern Mediterranean, are now both complete. avi Kösk, translated means Blue Villa, was the home of Makarios’s Italian born Greek lawyer, Poulides. It was built in 1957 and is one of North Cyprus’s well hidden buildings. Perhaps so, as Poulides was the biggest arms smuggler of the Middle East at the time and certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be overlooked!

It can be found by heading west from Girne towards Güzelyurt, past the Geçikoy reservoir and taking a left towards Çamlibel. Once through the village the villa is sign posted. It is in army grounds and a passport or kimlik card is required to be left with the sentry on duty, in return for which you get a pink card, to be exchanged back on departure.

An impressive drive through a tree lined avenue brings you to the car park and a fairly ordinary looking house, but do not be deceived. With his earnings as a lawyer and a major arms smuggler, Poulides was able to afford every luxury available at that time, including air conditioning, an impressive reproduction of a Greek Taverna, a mile long escape tunnel and an earthquake resistant room.

Things to look out for while wandering around this interesting tourist attraction include: the hardening seat in the study room purportedly a gift from Makarios to ensure complete concentration from his lawyer whilst working; the only picture of Poulides himself, looking every part the Mafia gangster he is claimed to be, and the painting of Mother Mary, whose eyes, hands, knees and bizarrely, shoe tips, follow you wherever you stand in the room.

A word of warning during your trip around the house: On no account pop your head around the door of the first bathroom on the tour if you are suffering from any form of hangover. Whilst it may have been the height of fashion in its time, the bold blue and orange patterned tiles, the peppermint green bathroom suite and pink ceiling latticework would now be enough to send a member of Changing Rooms into apoplexy .It will certainly not help a delicate disposition!

The views from the gardens are breathtaking and of course a necessity for anyone requiring a clear sight to the sea in order to signal to arms-carrying ships that the coast was clear.

For his alternative career as lawyer to Makarios, Poulides had a remarkable stone area built, standing on the middle stone of which and facing the house, provides an incredible acoustic, it is quite disconcerting to hear yourself echoed back when you speak.

The pool, with its underwater lighting and fountains, is allegedly where Poulides would throw an apple to the cavorting young women swimming there, the ‘lucky’ one to catch it would then be invited to spend the night with him.

Other items of interest- the colour coded tables in the Taverna, relating to the colour of the room the guest stayed in; the indoor Milk Pool, where Sophia Loren allegedly bathed and the nine dimensional mirror placed in the confessional in the Blue room, in order to see anyone coming up behind you, whilst the Lord heard your sins.

Admittedly the furniture and décor is now dated, but you can imagine how decadent it all would have been in the ‘50s and is certainly worth a couple of hours. Although photographs of the inside of the house are prohibited, a DVD tour of the house is available to purchase.

luslararası üne sahip Esentepe’deki golf kulübü yine harikalar yaratıyor. Bazılarımız ve hatta golfla alakası olmayan çoğumuz, golf kulübüne her yıl yeni bir kaptan seçildiğini bilmiyoruz. Bu yıl, Nisan 2010’dan Mart 2011’e kadar bu onur kulübün elçisi olma zevkini yaşayan Colin Herbert’e verildi.

he internationally renowned golf club in Esentepe has come up trumps again. Some people may not know, well most people, unless they are “into” golf, but every year there is a new captain of a golf club. This year, from April 2010 till March 2011 that honour was installed upon Colin Herbert, who has enjoyed being the ambassador for the club.

During his time as captain Colin has been playing a lot of golf, but also he has been assisting the local community, for there is a “Captains Charity”, and like his predecessor Ken Black, Colin also chose to support the local area of Esentepe. Last year, in association with Children in Need, the charity bought 50 desks and chairs for the local school. This year the club was notified that there was a problem with the roof of the infants school, in so far as it was collapsing.

KORINEUM GOlF VE ŞEHIR KUlÜBÜ Yine aynı şekilde Korineum Golf ve Şehir Kulübü ve Children in Need işi ele aldı. “Rat Pack” gecesi organize edildi ve yapılan çekilişle 6000TL bağış toplandı. Bu her ne kadar da tek bir etkinlik için inanılmaz bir rakam olsa da yeterli değildi. Bu nedenle bu kez Tumba bar devreye girdi. Düzenli olarak gerçekleştirilen quiz gecesi etkinliğinin Ekim ayı quiz gecesinde toplanılan tüm parayı bağışlayarak eksik olan miktarın tamamlanmasını ve yağmurlar başlamadan çatının tamir edilmesini sağladı. Korineum Golf ve Şehir Kulübü sadece 18 delikli bir şampiyonluk sahası değil, aynı zamanda yerel topluluk ve Kuzey Kıbrıs turizminde önemli bir rol oynayan bir kulüptür.

2010 yılı İngiltere’den gelen 20 profesyonel golfçunun karşılaştığı ilk Pro-Am yarışmasına sahne oldu. Bu yarışma tamamıyla yerel işletmelerin sponsorluğunda gerçekleşti. Again Korineum Golf and Country Club together with Children in Need stepped up to the plate. Organising a “Rat Pack” evening, and with the raffle from this event a total of 6,000tl was raised.

Although this was a staggering sum from one event it was not enough. It was then that the Tumba bar was able to assist and the money it raises from its monthly quiz the difference was covered and in October 2010 the new roof was finished, before the rain.

The Korineum Golf and Country Club is not just an 18 hole championship golf course, but also it plays a major role in the local community and in tourism for North Cyprus.

2010 saw the first Pro-Am competition, where 20 professional golfers came from the UK and played in teams of 4, all sponsored by local business. This was the first major international sporting event, and due to its success, there plans to be one every year, meaning that more and more people will be exposed to the wonders of North Cyprus, for the club is attracting visitors from all over Europe and Turkey.

orth Cyprus is an island rich in history and beauty and the village of Lapta, also known as Lapitos, is no exception. Ten kilometres west of Kyrenia, the village sprawls out over half a dozen levels, starting at the coastline, which is now predominantly hotels and reaching high up into the Kyrenia mountain range. The coastline area was once known as Lambousa, which according to tradition, was founded as early as the 13th century BC by a group of Laconians from South Greece. Other historians claim that the ancient kingdom of Lambousa, which translates as “The Shining One” was founded by Phoenician traders in the 8th century B.C. Either way, it was a very active trading post of the Phoenicians.

During Roman and Byzantine rule Lambousa became an important administrative city with a gymnasium, a theatre, other public buildings and dockyards, being a natural port for trade with Cilicia. It is also here that the famous fish tanks or fish breeding tanks are found. There is some debate over which of the two periods they date back to, but they are thought to be the earliest examples of their kind. Cut into the rock near the harbour, they were designed in such a way that while the cool and fresh water entered into them with the tides, the warmer water went out through another channel.

Today they can still clearly be identified near the curious rock hewn chapel of St. Eulambios, which is the core remnant of an old quarry. It was turned into catacombs in the late Ro-

man period, and this is where the body of Eulambios, an elderly martyr, was interred. In the same area, the 13th century double-doomed Monastery of Akhiropietos was erected over the ruins of an old cathedral. It was enlarged in the 15th century, at the same time that the ancient shrine of St. Evalios was also completely restored. Akhiropietos translates as “Built without hands” as, according to legend, the whole building was brought over in a single night by the Virgin from Asia Minor, where it was in danger of being destroyed and defiled by the heathen. The church is dedicated to a wonder-working icon of the Holy Handkerchief of St Veronica. There is an old Cypriote legend that says that the shroud of Christ was once kept at the church, but was later carried off by the Princess of the House of Savoy and given to the Cathedral at Turin, where it still remains.

In 627 AD, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius, fought the Persian general Raztis in one to one combat and after winning, beheaded him. Afterwards, he compared his victory with that of David against Goliath and issued some commemorative silver which is today known as the David plates. In 1900, they were found in the vicinity of Lambousa, in two stages and eventually having been split up into four, ended up in the museums of Nicosia, New York, Washington and London. It would appear that the plates had been buried in haste just before the Arab pirates arrived. These silver vessels, the largest of which depicted David against the giant Goliath, are regarded as among the finest examples of the art of the early Byzantine era.

Since most of them bore imperial control stamps, they were closely dated as being from the years 627-630 AD. In 647 AD the people of Lambousa moved inland seeking safety from the marauding pirates who, once having started their raids, escalated them over a period of 300 years.

After burying their treasures, the Lambousans moved into the mountains and Lapta or Lapitos was founded. During the Byzantine times it was the seat of an Orthodox Bishop until 1222. There are a number of churches to be found in the village, although none of them date before the 18th century. One of them, St Anastasia, is dramatically perched on the top of a cliff.

Also to be found in Lapta is one of the islands’ most attractive stone mosques, with a classical Ottoman silhouette of minaret, square prayer hall and hexagonal drum and dome.

The whole area of Lapta and Lambousa is steeped in history and beauty, from the foundations of an old lighthouse and Roman tombs on the coast to the lush greenery in the mountains. When you have a spare afternoon it is worth taking the time to explore the winding narrow roads through the village. Look out for the wonderful doors on many of the Cypriot houses and the views from the top of Lapta looking out across the sea are stunning. pnc 87

TIE THE KNOT IN THE SUN Prince William will marry Kate Middleton on Friday April 29 at Westminster Abbey.

Their wedding costs will be paid for jointly by the Royal Family and Kate’s parents, and while the couple are said to be mindful of the current economic situation when planning their special day, there is no doubt that the money at their disposal will be far in excess of all but a limited number of couples planning to marry.

The church is hoping that the royal wedding will give a boost to the institution of marriage as a whole and according to researchers in South Wales, marriage is good for you. The recently published report states that being happily married has been linked to improvements in mental and physical health, plus longer life. In general women seem to have better mental health because of marriage, while the beneficial effects for men are reflected in their physical health.

Another advantage of getting married in North Cyprus is that the law here is based on British law, meaning that marriages are legal and recognised worldwide.

However there are certain requirements that need to be met if a couple wish to be officially married abroad. Both bride and groom must be in possession of a 10 year British Passport and full Birth Certificates for both parties must be provided. If either the bride or groom has been previously married and is now divorced, a decree absolute is required. A Statutory Declaration form signed and stamped by a notary solicitor to confirm both parties are single and free to get marry, divorced and free to marry, or widowed and free to marry is necessary and all declarations must be prepared three months or less before the wedding date. Before coming to Cyprus, all the documents need to be verified and stamped by the North Cyprus Embassy in London. The couple must do this in person with a witness each to confirm they are who they say they are.

An easy alternative is to get married by a registrar in the UK and to have the wedding blessing and party in North Cyprus, an option that is becoming increasingly popular. The stress of organising that special day can overshadow the thrill of marrying your loved one, especially when it is being held in a foreign country. They not only look and taste infinitely better than shopbought ones, but there are so many varieties from which to choose that even if you only have a hanging basket you can plant a cascading type which will give you dozens of sweet, cherry tomatoes. However, many beginners can end up disappointed, as their tomatoes either suffer blossom end rot, or are decimated by blight, where the stem and the fruits end up with brown blotches and become inedible, particularly in wet, windy summers. Kevin Smith, commissioning editor of Gardeners’ World magazine, which is launching a Grow Your Own Week campaign from March 29, says: “Few crops are more rewarding than tomatoes, and they’re easy to grow in any space, even a tiny urban balcony.

“Don’t be put off by the recent cold weather, even if it persists for a few more weeks, as you can delay sowing tomato seeds until April, or even buy pot-grown plants as late as May. Producing a delicious tomato crop is easy.”

He offers the following tips to help you produce healthy, delicious tomatoes: Water the soil or compost daily to ensure it never dries out. Pay special attention to plants grown in containers, as irregular watering causes nutritional imbalance, leading to

Sera daha uzun bir mevsim olasılığı verdiğinden domates yetiştirmek için uygun bir mekandır ve açık havada yetişen bitkilere kıyasla daha büyük meyve alma şansı verir. Kapalı mekan domatesleri ısıtıcının 15 derece veya tercihen biraz daha sıcağa ayarlanması şartıyla Mart ayında ekilebilir. Açık hava domatesleri, bitkiyi açık havaya almak için güvenli hava sıcaklığına ulaşana kadar kapalı mekanlarda sekiz veya dokuz hafta tutulmalıdır. Soğuk bölgelerde Nisan’a kadar beklemeniz gerekir. İki yıl önce, ıslak bir yaz mevsimi hüküm sürerken (ki bu hava şartlarından domatesler nefret eder) bir dergi en verimli domatesi seçmek için konteynerde domates yetiştirme denemesi gerçekleştirdi. En başarılı tür zengin, kırmızı ve hafifçe sünmüş şekliyle bir şeri domates olan “Apero F1”di. Onu bol miktarda lezzetli ve çilek şeklinde meyve veren ‹Tomatoberry F1› takip etti.

Keep your plants well fed. For tomatoes grown in pots and bags, watering by itself won’t be enough to ensure healthy growth. Feed tomatoes weekly with a high-potash fertiliser, increasing the frequency as the plants grow larger or if leaves show signs of discolouring.

Train tomatoes to canes or supports. Different types will require different training. For example bush tomatoes will need little, if any, training. However, most other tomatoes are trained as single stems, or cordons, and the main shoot needs to be tied upright to a cane or support.

Pinch out tips. Outdoor cordon tomatoes will usually form three or four trusses of fruits during the season.

Pinch off the tip of the main shoot a leaf or two above the fourth flower truss. You can leave greenhouse plants to grow on.

Combat blight disease. Warm, humid weather provides the perfect conditions for blight disease which attacks tomatoes and potatoes. This fungus disease spreads rapidly via airborne spores when conditions are right. Keep an eye on the weather and, if these conditions occur, use a preventive fungicide spray, such as Sitahen 945, straight away to stop the blight spores infecting your plants.

The greenhouse is the obvious place to grow tomatoes as you can give them a longer season and are likely to get bigger crops than if you grow them outdoors.

Indoor tomatoes can be sown in March in a heated propagator set to a minimum of 15C, but preferably a little higher.

Outdoor tomatoes should be started off indoors eight or nine weeks before it’s safe to plant outdoors in your area.

In colder areas, wait until April.

Two years ago, during the wet summer (which is the sort of weather tomatoes hate) the magazine held a trial of container-grown tomatoes to discover which performed best. The overall top choice was ‘Apero F1’, a rich, red cherry tomato with a slightly elongated shape, followed by ‘Tomatoberry F1’, which produced an abundance of delicious, strawberry-shaped fruits on trailing trusses.
