Amante del buen comer, que soy, para mí la Versalles es una de las mecas gastronómicas vallartenses. Hay decenas de opciones, desde tacos callejeros hasta restaurantes en forma, con platillos que merecen cinco estrellas. Un must, pues.

Les dejo aquí algunas sugerencias para todos los gustos y bolsillos:

• BARBACOW (Viena 253): Una taquería diferente a las demás: ofrece tacos de barbacoa de res y otras ricuras (los de camarones están soberbios y son para chuparse los dedos). Además, las tortillas están hechas a mano.

Ciertamente, el servicio puede mejorar.

• BARRIO BISTRO (España 305): Su chef y patrón, Memo Wulff, es el pionero al haberse instalado en la colonia, cuando no había más de dos o tres lugares decentes para comer. La suya es una cocina muy creativa y espontánea, con ingredientes locales.

• HOMUN (Viena 198): Un lugar pequeño que alberga una gran propuesta culinaria: “cocina libre”, como la llama Mario Borja, su creador. Considere que es un lugar pequeño que solo abre para cena. No es barato, pero vale la pena visitarlo.

• LA TOSCA (España 323): Uno de los restaurantes italianos más auténticos de la ciudad.

Se trata de una trattoria muy popular, cuyo creador Gaetano Simonetti se esmera en cada platillo de su rico menú. La pasta es fuera de serie. Suele tener música en vivo.

• PUERCO DE ORO (Mérida 128): Popular sitio especializado en tacos de panza de puerco que son una delicia. Abre de 9 a 15 horas, para desayuno y comida. Establecimiento favorecido por la exigente clientela local.

• TARANTINO’S (Viena 192): Sucursal de una pizzería veterana ubicada a pocas cuadras de distancia. Según algunos expertos, sus pizzas están en el top tres de esta categoría en Puerto Vallarta. Cierra los miércoles y solo acepta pagos en efectivo.

• Y EL SEÑOR DE LOS CHURROS: Pequeño y rudimentario puesto callejero que se instala todas las noches en la esquina de Hamburgo y Berlín. Un señor muy serio prepara y cobra el azucarado producto que es la delicia de nacionales y foráneos.

Postre ideal para después de los tacos y a precio más que accesible.

Dining

As a foodie, I consider Versalles one of Puerto Vallarta’s gastronomic meccas. There are dozens of options, from street tacos to full-fledged restaurants offering five-star-worthy dishes—a must-visit, indeed.

Here are a few recommendations for all tastes and budgets: • BARBACOW (Viena 253): A taqueria like no other, featuring beef barbacoa tacos and other delicacies (the shrimp tacos are outstanding and finger-licking good).

The tortillas are handmade. However, the service could improve.

• BARRIO BISTRO (España 305): Chef and owner Memo Wulff was a pioneer in settling in the neighborhood when there were only two or three decent dining options. His creative and spontaneous cooking relies on local ingredients.

• HOMUN (Viena 198): A small spot with a big culinary proposal: “free cooking,” as described by its creator, Mario Borja. Open only for dinner, it’s not cheap but well worth the visit.

• LA TOSCA (España 323): One of the city’s most authentic Italian restaurants. This popular trattoria, run by Gaetano Simonetti, boasts an extraordinary menu. The pasta is exceptional, and live music is often part of the experience.

• PUERCO DE ORO (Mérida 128): This popular spot specializes in pork belly tacos that are simply delicious. Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breakfast and lunch, it’s a favorite among locals.

• TARANTINO’S (Viena 192): A branch of a long-standing pizzeria located a few blocks away. According to some, their pizzas rank among the top three in Puerto Vallarta. Closed on Wednesdays, cash only.

• THE CHURRO GUY: A small, humble street cart set up every evening at the corner of Hamburgo and Berlín. A very serious man makes and sells these sugary delights that locals and tourists love. The perfect dessert after tacos, and very affordable.

Lugares especializados solo en tragos hay pocos realmente en el vecindario. De ellos, Coco Machete (Yugoeslavia 204B) llama la atención.

El bar es parte de un singular conjunto de establecimientos llamado el Jardín de la Versalles, integrado por la cervecería Los Cuentos y pizzas Giardino. Uno puede ordenar de comer y beber de cualquiera de ellos en las mesas dispuestas en el jardín compartido.

Un bien cuidado espacio, tipo beer garden, sirve de escenario para pasar un rato agradable en compañía de familia o amigos en un ambiente informal. Regularmente tocan música en vivo; asimismo, suele presentarse algún DJ. La oferta de Coco Machete es única como su nombre. Uno puede elegir ricos cocteles o mocktails de una carta bien surtida: tequilas, mezcales, raicillas, whiskies, brandies o rones, hasta un muy tentador catálogo de cocteles preparados por sus expertos cantineros.

Solo para darse una idea: hay margaritas y mezcalitas de limón, fruta de la pasión, jamaica o cereza ($160 pesos). Las copas de tequila andan entre los $130 y los $360 pesos. Para quienes no beben alcohol, hay unos cocteles que se ven muy interesantes (un ejemplo: Isla de Encanta, que contiene cacao, coco, rosa y menta).

El servicio es atento y discreto. Por supuesto, no puede faltar la Hora Feliz (el horario varía según el día de la semana). Su clientela es de jóvenes y adultos contemporáneos, tanto nacionales como foráneos.

Y en cuestiones vitales como los cafés, en la Versalles debe haber al menos 10 buenos sitios dentro de su perímetro (Carmesí, The Coffee, Locura Café, Natureza Cowork, Lima Limón, Espresso 45, Coffee and Cake, Al Grano, Sweet Sarah’s, Proyecto Café…son algunas de estas cafeterías que sirven también repostería y bocadillos). Como vicioso del espresso, puedo recomendarlos a ojos cerrados.

Drinks

There are few places in the neighborhood dedicated exclusively to drinks, but Coco Machete (Yugoeslavia 204B) stands out.

Part of the unique Jardín de la Versalles complex—which includes the Los Cuentos brewery and Giardino pizzas—you can order food and drinks from any of these establishments while seated in the shared garden area.

This well-maintained beer garden-style space offers a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying time with family or friends. Live music or a DJ often adds to the ambiance.

Coco Machete’s menu is as unique as its name, featuring rich cocktails and mocktails.

Their offerings include tequilas, mezcals, raicillas, whiskies, brandies, and rums, as well as a tempting list of expertly crafted cocktails.

Examples include margaritas and mezcalitas with lime, passion fruit, hibiscus, or cherry (160 pesos). Tequila shots range from 130 to 360 pesos. For non-drinkers, intriguing mocktails like Isla de Encanta (with cacao, coconut, rose, and mint) are also available.

The service is attentive and discreet.

Of course, you can’t miss the Happy Hour (the schedule varies depending on the day of the week). Its clientele is young and contemporary adults, both national and foreign.

And in vital matters such as coffee, in Versalles there must be at least 10 good places within its perimeter (Carmesí, The Coffee, Locura Café, Natureza Cowork, Lima Limón, Espresso 45, Coffee and Cake, Al Grano, Sweet Sarah’s, Proyecto Coffee…are some of these coffee shops that also serve pastries and sandwiches). As an espresso addict, I can recommend them with my eyes closed.

LA VERSALLES Restaurante

Estimo que existen, al menos, 30 restaurantes que vale la pena visitar en la zona, ya sea para desayunar, comer o cenar. De ellos, me detengo un uno que nunca defrauda: El Abulón.

Justo en la esquina de Hamburgo y Palm Springs es la dirección de esta antojería del mar.

Así se autonombra este restaurante, cuya cocina abreva de los sabores del Pacífico con un acento de cosas ricas estilo mexicano, y por supuesto con ingredientes indispensables como el maíz.

El establecimiento es, por así decirlo, una enorme terraza, sin paredes, con jardín al lado, donde hay juegos para que los niños se entretengan mientras los adultos comen tranquilamente.

Con servicio amable y eficaz (que puede ser algo lento cuando el local está lleno), precios justos y un muy antojable menú, El Abulón se ha ganado el aprecio y lealtad de una clientela deseosa de comer y beber en un lugar fresco, relajado. Tostadas, aguachiles, entradas y ceviches, tacos, platillos de especialidad, postres y un bar muy bien surtido, constituyen la propuesta de este lugar favorito de familias, parejas y grupos.

De entrada, puede ordenar tostadas (de pulpo, camarón, abulón; van de 95 a 130 pesos), para luego pedir un rico pulpo en las rocas con chile guajillo y ajo (260 pesos; no saben qué delicia). Convenza a su(s) acompañante(s) de que ordenen por ejemplo tacos de chicharrón prensado y de pulpo (85 pesos) o bien unos suculentos camarones cucaracha tatemados en mantequilla y adobados en salsa de chile de árbol (225 pesos) ... claro está, con toda la intención de compartir y probar de todo. Si les queda un huequito, pidan unos tacos de camarón al pastor (165 pesos).

El Abulón

I estimate that there are at least 30 restaurants worth visiting in the area, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Of these, I’ll stop at one that never disappoints: El Abulón.

Right on the corner of Hamburg and Palm Springs is the address of this seafood delicacy. This is the name of this restaurant, whose cuisine draws on the flavors of the Pacific with an accent of delicious Mexican-style things, and of course with essential ingredients such as corn.

The establishment is, so to speak, a huge terrace, without walls, with a garden next to it, where there are games for children to entertain themselves while adults eat quietly.

With friendly and efficient service (which can be somewhat slow when the place is full), fair prices and a very tempting menu, El Abulón has earned the appreciation and loyalty of a clientele eager to eat and drink in a cool, relaxed place. Tostadas, aguachiles, appetizers and ceviches, tacos, specialty dishes, desserts and a well-stocked bar are the offerings of this favorite place for families, couples and groups.

As a starter, you can order tostadas (octopus, shrimp, abalone; they range from 95 to 130 pesos), and then order a delicious octopus on the rocks with guajillo chili and garlic (260 pesos; you won’t know how delicious). Convince your companion(s) to order, for example, tacos with pressed chicharrón and octopus (85 pesos) or some succulent cockroach shrimp seared in butter and marinated in chile de árbol sauce (225 pesos) ... of course, with the full intention of sharing and trying everything. If you have room, order some shrimp tacos al pastor (165 pesos).

As for desserts, those of us who have a vice of sugary things, of those forbidden fruits that doctors ask us to consume with Franciscan moderation, are left wanting. There are not many and sometimes they run out of what you want.

If you are lucky, order a Yelapa-style pie with ice cream (95 pesos) or an artisanal ice cream (55 pesos).

As for drinks, they are better stocked: cocktails, beers from recognized and artisanal brands, cocktails, tequilas, mezcals, mixology creations, wines, soft drinks… There is something to quench anyone’s thirst. Honestly, everything at competitive prices. Example: a Corona, Victoria or Pacífico beer is 40 pesos. Not bad, huh? Bottles of wine are very affordable at 400 pesos. In short, a meal for two can cost between 800 and 1,600 pesos.

El Abulón is open from 12 to 8 p.m. Closed on Mondays. Enjoy your meal.

Centro cultural y biblioteca, Los Mangos (Francisco Villa 1001) es una institución muy querida y respetada por los vallartenses. Abierta desde 1996, este espacio comunitario pone a disposición de la sociedad su acervo bibliográfico y un repertorio variado de actividades artísticas, culturales para todos los gustos y edades. ¿Taller de yoga? ¿Presentación de un libro? ¿Ganas de ver una exposición de artistas plásticos locales? ¿Qué tal un recital música coral? ¿Clases de guitarra? … Esto y mucho más tiene Los Mangos, sin olvidar, por supuesto, su función original de biblioteca.

Sus amplias instalaciones, ubicadas en la orilla de Versalles, rodeadas de un alegre jardín, son punto de encuentro y reunión para la sociedad local. Uno de sus eventos más importantes es la subasta anual para recaudar fondos. Este año tendrá lugar el 6 de marzo.

La recomiendo ampliamente. Uno puede ahí hacerse de una obra de arte, comprar un certificado algún establecimiento o restaurante vallartense, comer y beber, mientras coopera para el mantenimiento de Los Mangos.

No es secreto que la fórmula del éxito en bienes raíces es Ubicación, ubicación y ubicación, cosa que se cumple cabalmente en esta colonia donde conviven el viejo y el nuevo Vallarta, la tradición y el estilo contemporáneo.

De acuerdo con DAA, visitante chilango que recientemente la visitó, “Versalles tiene un encanto y energía muy singular. Su diversidad y calidad gastronómica se extiende por calles empedradas. Es una invitación a tener una experiencia agradable acompañada de la calidez de los locales.”

Y así es.

Los Mangos Cultural Center and Library (Francisco Villa 1001) is a beloved and respected institution in Puerto Vallarta. Open since 1996, this community space offers a library and a wide variety of artistic and cultural activities for all tastes and ages.

From yoga workshops and book presentations to art exhibitions, choral music recitals, and guitar classes, Los Mangos has something for everyone, while staying true to its original mission as a library.
