Al noreste del centro de la ciudad, se encuentra El Pitillal, populosa área donde habitan y trabajan miles de vallartenses, así como zona favorita de compras, servicios diversos, restaurantes, tacos, cafés... Con sabor a pueblito, lejos del glamour de la playa, del centro y de la Zona Romántica, esta colonia –más bien, comunidad-- llena de vida y sabor mexicano es poco conocida para los visitantes nacionales y foráneos.

Delegación que depende del municipio de Puerto Vallarta, alguna vez fue una ranchería que con el paso del tiempo fue absorbida por la incansable mancha urbana pata salada. Lo que era un camino de terracería que comunicaba a la ex hacienda de El Pitillal con la ciudad, con el paso de los años se convirtió en una muy transitada avenida, la Francisco Villa, que permite el acceso desde la avenida principal (Medina Ascencio) a Piti York (como de cariño la llaman los locales). Más al norte existe otra vía importante para llegar a este barrio: la Prisciliano Sánchez, que parte de la Terminal Marítima hacia el oriente.

To the northeast of the city center lies El Pitillal, a bustling area where thousands of Vallarta locals live and work. It is also a favorite spot for shopping, diverse services, restaurants, tacos, cafés… With a small-town vibe, far from the glamour of the beach, downtown, and the Romantic Zone, this neighborhood – or rather, community – brimming with life and Mexican flavor is little known to both national and foreign visitors.

A delegation that falls under the municipality of Puerto Vallarta, El Pitillal was once a small ranch that, over time, was absorbed by the relentless urban sprawl of this coastal city. What used to be a dirt road connecting the former El Pitillal hacienda with the city has, over the years, transformed into a heavily trafficked avenue, Francisco Villa, providing access from the main road (Medina Ascencio) to “Piti York” (as the locals affectionately call it). Further north, there’s another important route to reach this neighborhood: Prisciliano Sánchez, which extends eastward from the Maritime Terminal.

Like any good small town, the center or nucleus is the town square (Emiliano Zapata, between Independencia and 5 de Mayo streets), located right in front of the CONTINUES PAGE 32

Este espacio cumple las características mínimas de una plaza central mexicana: tiene un kiosco al centro y cuenta con bancas de cemento que no solo sirven para descansar, sino también para que los vecinos socialicen un poco.

The square (“Piti Park” to locals) is a meeting point, a hub for buses and taxis, a public underground parking lot, a music and dance stage, a street market, and a food court offering a wide variety of snacks. This space has the essential features of a typical Mexican central plaza: a gazebo at its center and cement benches that not only serve as places to rest but also as spots for neighbors to socialize.

Muchas cosas. Basta caminar para asomarse al México más auténtico, encontrar comercios de todo tipo (decir que hay de todo no es exageración), fruterías, zapaterías y tiendas de huaraches y piel, cafés, pastelerías, peluquerías y estéticas, fondas, taquerías, restaurantes y bares, talleres, casas tradicionales. Si eres de espíritu aventurero y deseas salir de los lugares donde solo hay turistas, no te vas a arrepentir de explorar sus calles de ritmo pausado y tranquilo. Hay que anotar que, ocasionalmente, la paz del vecindario se ve alterada por algunas bocinas con música regional o reguetón a volúmenes un poco elevados, por decir lo menos.

Si se trata de comer algo diferente y local, se puede encontrar birria, carnitas, barbacoa, menudo, tamales, enchiladas, quesadillas, pozole, tacos al pastor, chilaquiles, mariscos, pan y pasteles, elotes, paletas y helados…Además de la variedad de platillos, te podrás sorprender de los atractivos precios, tanto en los establecimientos fijos como en los puestos callejeros.

Solo es cosa de recorrer las calles que convergen en la plaza central. En menos de cinco minutos podrías estar sentado en una birriería. Por ejemplo, la Villaseñor (Independencia 149. Centro), acreditado establecimiento que abrió sus puertas en 1990. El discreto local de muros amarillos con mesas y sillas rojas, con el logo de la Coca Cola, se especializa en un platillo típicamente jalisciense, la birria. Sin entrar en demasiados detalles, la birria es uno de los favoritos del desayuno de estas tierras. Se trata de una barbacoa de carne, generalmente de borrego o chivo, preparada con una variada mezcla de chiles (ancho, chilacate, guajillo, pasilla, morita y cascabel). Ciertamente, es un platillo muy condimentado, al que se agregan cebolla, cilantro y limón; se come acompañado de tortillas (si son hechas a mano es un plus). Uno puede pedir solo el consomé, o bien la carne con caldo o comer birria en tacos fritos o en quesadilla.

En Villaseñor un plato chico de birria de chivo cuesta $130 pesos. Hay aguas preparadas (de jamaica, arroz…) y refrescos. Lamentablemente, no ofrecen cervezas (sinceramente la birria marida muy bien con las chelas). Los jóvenes camareros son muy serviciales y, sinceramente, se pasan de eficientes pues cada dos minutos van a la mesa a preguntar si a uno se le ofrece algo más. Mientras saboreo mi almuerzo, me limitaba a responderles con un amable “No, gracias” con la mano pues estaba enfrascado en comer mi birria de chivo. Completé con un soberbio taco de frijoles (una gloria de la cocina casera local).

El día que fui no había menú impreso.

Tras disculparse, el personal recitaba las variantes disponibles para el comensal. El precio era una sorpresa reservada al momento de pedir la cuenta. Una comida para dos debe salir en alrededor de 300 pesos. Al igual que en otros comederos vallartenses, no aceptan pagos con tarjeta de crédito. Solo efectivo.

Plenty of things. Simply strolling through the area reveals a more authentic side of Mexico.

You’ll find shops of all kinds (and it’s no exaggeration to say they have everything), fruit shops, shoe stores, leather goods shops, cafés, bakeries, barber shops, salons, diners, taco stands, restaurants and bars, workshops, and traditional homes. If you’re adventurous and want to venture beyond tourist hotspots, you won’t regret exploring the slow, tranquil pace of its streets. It’s worth noting that occasionally the neighborhood’s peace is interrupted by speakers blaring regional music or reggaeton at somewhat loud volumes, to put it mildly.

Eating and Savoring If you’re looking to try something local and different, you’ll find birria, carnitas, barbacoa, menudo, tamales, enchiladas, quesadillas, pozole, tacos al pastor, chilaquiles, seafood, bread, pastries, corn on the cob, popsicles, and ice cream… Besides the variety of dishes, you’ll also be surprised by the affordable prices, both in established restaurants and street stalls.

All you need to do is walk the streets that converge on the central plaza. Within five minutes, you could find yourself seated in a birria eatery. For instance, there’s Villaseñor (Independencia 149, Centro), a renowned establishment that opened its doors in 1990. The modest yellow-walled spot with red Coca-Cola tables and chairs specializes in a typically Jalisco dish: birria. Without going into too much detail, birria is a local breakfast favorite. It’s a barbecue-style meat dish, usually lamb or goat, prepared with a mix of chilies (ancho, chilacate, guajillo, pasilla, morita, and cascabel).

It’s highly seasoned and typically garnished with onion, cilantro, and lime; served with tortillas (handmade ones are a bonus). You can order just the broth, the meat with broth, or enjoy birria in fried tacos or quesadillas.

At Villaseñor, a small plate of goat birria costs $130 pesos. They also offer drinks like aguas frescas (hibiscus, rice water…) and sodas. Unfortunately, they don’t serve beer (though, honestly, birria pairs excellently with a cold one). The young servers are very attentive – almost overly so, as they check on you every two minutes to see if you need anything.

While savoring my meal, I politely responded, “No, thank you,” with a wave of my hand as I focused on enjoying my goat birria. I finished with a superb bean taco (a delight of local homemade cuisine).

The day I went, there was no printed menu. After apologizing, the staff recited the available options for the diners. The price remained a surprise until the bill arrived. A meal for two will cost around 300 pesos. Like many eateries in Vallarta, they do not accept credit card payments – cash only.

Luego de tan rico almuerzo al estilo Jalisco, ameritaba una caminata por las céntricas calles con tiendas de todo tipo, visité otro establecimiento favorito de los locales: una sucursal de la pastelería Fondants (esquina de Francisco I. Madero y 20 de noviembre… una dirección muy revolucionaria). Este negocio elabora pasteles para fiestas, pero han tenido el tino de ofrecer rebanadas para consumo individual. Tras echar un vistazo a las existencias, elegí una porción de pastel de café capuccino (50 pesitos). Una delicia y a juzgar por el tamaño, sin duda mi nutrióloga lo aprobaría.

El Pitillal no se caracteriza por comida gourmet cara y exótica, pero sí por excelentes lugares con una cocina auténtica, plena de sabores y esencias locales, a precios razonables.

Por la mañana, la gente local acostumbra birria, menudo, tacos, café con pan… Aquí le van algunas sugerencias. Don Chilaquiles (Abasolo 212), especializado en variantes de una institución de la ingesta matutina, los chilaquiles. Para buenos tacos, está Candora (Benito Juárez 274), negocio familiar con bastantes años de ofrecer sabrosos tacos de guisados y mariscos. Volver al taco (Independencia 252) es famoso por sus sopes, tostadas, enchiladas, pozole y otras tentaciones de la gastronomía tradicional del país (además de tacos…).

Si quiere mariscos, vaya a El Pichi (Zapata 365). A corta distancia de la plaza central, es un restaurante muy solicitado para pescados y frutos del mar; goza de buena reputación y descansa los lunes. Tino’s es otro afamado establecimiento que ofrece pescados y mariscos. Situado en calle Avenida 333, es uno de los favoritos de la zona.

Para la noche, el visitante encontrará un sinfín de taquerías o cenadurías. Estos sitios, también a corta distancia del centro. Algunas recomendaciones de sitios para cenar ricos antojitos: Tía Anita (5 de mayo 70), Tere Bueno (Hidalgo 199), Doña Yuya (Abasolo 132).

Y en temas de arte y cultura, es cierto que la mayoría de estas actividades tienen lugar en el centro de la ciudad o la Zona Romántica. No obstante, los habitantes de El Pitillal tienen en el vecindario un centro cultural que ofrece talleres artísticos y de oficios, así como conferencias y obras de teatro. Hace poco, el actual gobierno municipal intentó cerrarlo y convertirlo en una suerte de centro de negocios, medida cancelada al ver la oposición enérgica de la comunidad cultural y la gente de la zona.

Los de El Pitillal, como buenos vallartenses, son muy fiesteros. Les encanta celebrar fechas cívicas y religiosas a lo largo del año. Para no ir lejos la cuarta semana de septiembre son las fiestas patronales de San Miguel Arcángel, que incluyen misas, procesiones, cabalgatas, juegos pirotécnicos, puestos de comida, música…en las que participa con entusiasmo la comunidad. Es sabido que los mexicanos podemos combinar muy bien el fervor religioso con los festejos mundanos. La clave es de darle su lugar y tiempo a cada uno.

Una buena forma de conocer mejor un país es adentrarse en esos territorios donde la gente habita, trabaja, hace sus compras, va a comer y divertirse. Esta área bien vale la pena una visita porque no todo Puerto Vallarta es arena y playas.

Delicious Temptations Everywhere

After such a delicious Jalisco-style meal, a walk through the central streets lined with all sorts of shops was a must. I visited another local favorite: a branch of the Fondants bakery (on the corner of Francisco I. Madero and 20 de Noviembre… quite the revolutionary address). This business specializes in party cakes but has wisely decided to offer slices for individual consumption. After checking out their offerings, I chose a slice of cappuccino coffee cake (50 pesos). A true delight, and judging by its size, my nutritionist would surely approve.

El Pitillal isn’t known for high-end gourmet cuisine, but it does boast excellent places serving authentic food, full of local flavors and essence, at reasonable prices.

In the mornings, locals typically enjoy birria, menudo, tacos, or coffee with bread… Here are some suggestions: Don Chilaquiles (Abasolo 212) specializes in variations of a breakfast institution, chilaquiles. For good tacos, there’s Candora (Benito Juárez 274), a family-run spot with many years of serving tasty tacos with different fillings, including seafood. Volver al Taco (Independencia 252) is famous for its sopes, tostadas, enchiladas, pozole, and other temptations of traditional Mexican cuisine (besides tacos, of course).

If you’re craving seafood, head to El Pichi (Zapata 365). Just a short distance from the central plaza, this restaurant is highly regarded for its fish and seafood; it’s very popular and closed on Mondays.

Tino’s is another well-known spot offering fish and seafood. Located on Avenida 333, it’s a local favorite.

At night, visitors will find countless taco stands or diners, all within walking distance from the center. Some recommended places for delicious evening snacks include Tía Anita (5 de Mayo 70), Tere Bueno (Hidalgo 199), and Doña Yuya (Abasolo 132).

Art and Culture It’s true that most cultural activities take place in the city center or the Romantic Zone.

However, El Pitillal residents have a cultural center in their neighborhood offering art and craft workshops, conferences, and theater performances. Recently, the current municipal government tried to close it and convert it into a business center – a plan that was canceled after strong opposition from the local cultural community and neighborhood residents.

El Pitillal locals, like good Vallarta natives, love to party. They enthusiastically celebrate civic and religious holidays throughout the year. For example, during the fourth week of September, they hold the patron saint festival for San Miguel Arcángel. This includes masses, processions, horseback rides, fireworks, food stalls, and music – all enthusiastically embraced by the community. Mexicans are known for skillfully combining religious fervor with worldly celebrations, giving each its proper time and place.

Exploring areas where people live, work, shop, eat, and have fun is a great way to better understand a country. This area is well worth a visit because Puerto Vallarta is much more than just sand and beaches.
