uando entró a la Universidad pensaba estudiar Geología, cuando egresó estimaba que su vida la dedicaría al estudio del Paleolítico en Francia; sin embargo, su destino estaba marcado con mucha anticipación, desde su infancia, cuando creció de la mano de su abuelo un agricultor de maíz cuya principal diversión era buscar artefactos antiguos. Joseph B. Mountjoy es por supuesto arqueólogo y ha dedicado su carrera entera a estudiar la costa occidental de México, una tierra pródiga en maíz.

hen Mountjoy began his university studies, he thought he’d become a geologist, but by the time he graduated, he’d decided to dedicate his life to the study of the Paleolithic Era in France. However, unbeknownst to him, his destiny had already been set through his grandfather, a corn farmer who spent his free time looking for ancient artifacts. Joseph B. Mountjoy ended up being an archaeologist dedicated to studying the western coast of Mexico, a corn grower’s haven.

Mountjoy was born in the central region of Illinois, in a small town called Atlanta (no relation to Georgia’s). His spirit of inquiry and adventure was born there. “My family CONTINUES PAGE 6

“Mi familia era de granjeros, tenían un negocio de maíz híbrido. Yo trabajé en el campo desde muy pequeño. Mi abuelo salía al campo buscando artefactos de los indios, tenía una gran fascinación lo mismo por la naturaleza y la geología que por todo lo relacionado con los indios. Siendo yo el primer nieto me contagió sus intereses.

“El primer recuerdo que tengo de las exploraciones con mi abuelo es de cuando tenía seis años de edad. Recuerdo haber encontrado una punta de dardo del Arcaico, que data más o menos de año 3000 aC. Conservo ese hallazgo en mi casa de Estados Unidos”, relata el arqueólogo.

“Mi colección, lo que recolecté con mi abuelo y luego de que el muriera, hasta antes de comenzar a estudiar en la universidad, unas 750 piezas, las doné al museo de mi pueblo, ya limpio y clasificado hace como dos años. Antes de estudiar no las clasificaba, sólo sabía que eran de los indios.

Pasaba un poco como pasa acá, que la gente encuentra piezas y las guarda, pero no tiene idea de la edad ni del uso que se les daba”, asegura.

Pronto llegó el momento de estudiar un grado universitario. Entonces creyó que seguir la línea heredada por su padre era lo adecuado. Su interés lo llevó por otro camino.

El destino estaba escrito, no sólo para los estudios, sino para el objeto de ellos.

México, como se dijo, no estaba en sus planes incluso cerca de terminar la carrera.

“Cuando egresé yo iba a estudiar un posgrado sobre el Paleolítico en Francia, pero un profesor de la Universidad del Sur de Illinois me ofreció un trabajo de verano en Zacatecas, en Sombrerete, un estudio sobre la frontera entre los primeros agricultores y los últimos nómadas cazadores. Era el último proyecto de mi profesor, el primero para mí en términos profesionales. Fue una experiencia única, aunque no estaba yo muy empapado de la arqueología mexicana, regresé a Estados Unidos fascinado por la cultura y los problemas de la arqueología de la zona, decidí tomar una clase sobre esto con el profesor Kelley, que era el mero mero de la zona, y Rubén Piña Cham, que estaba como profesor invitado y fue quien realmente me sembró interés por estudiar una región poco trabajada: la costa del Occidente de México”, explica.

Eso fue en 1968, hoy en día Pepe Montealegre, como le dicen sus vecinos de Mascota, es uno de los principales estudiosos de la costa occidental en México, quizá quien mejor la conoce en términos arqueológicos. Su trabajo hasta hace poco lo realizó como académico de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte, el primer lugar donde encontró un empleo y del que ya se retiró, aunque permanece como profesor-investigador del Centro Universitario de la Costa de la Universidad de Guadalajara.

Su primera experiencia formal en la región de Puerto Vallarta resultó en uno de los legados más importantes para la región.

Se trató del salvamento en la presa Cajón de Peña.

is made up of farmers; they had a hybrid corn business. I worked the fields ever since I was a little boy. My Granddad used to go out to the fields and look for Indian artifacts. He loved nature and geology and anything related to the Indians. Since I was his first grandson, he instilled those passions in me.

“My first memory of my explorations with my Grandfather was when I was six years old. I remember finding a spear head from the Archaic period, around 3000 B.C. I still have that piece in my home in the United States”, he added. Such expeditions continued even after the age of thirteen when his Grandfather passed away. “My collection, including the pieces I collected with my grandfather, was made up of about 750 pieces. I donated them to the town’s museum, around two years ago, all classified and cleaned up.

Before I went to college, I didn’t know about classifying, all I knew was that these were Indian artifacts. The same sort of thing happens here, because people find these pieces and don’t know their importance, so they just keep them. They have no idea how old they are or what they were used for”, he added.

However, his destiny was set, not only for his field of study, but for his life work as well.

Mexico hadn’t been in his plans at all, not even when he graduated. “When I graduated, I had decided to do graduate work on the Paleolithic Era in France. But a Southern Illinois University professor offered me a summer job in Zacatecas, in Sombrerete. This was a site that studied the border between the first agricultural peoples and the last hunting nomads. It was my professor’s last professional project and my first. What a unique experience! I returned to the U.S. fascinated by the culture and the problems with archaeology in the area. I decided to take a class with Professor Kelley on the subject. He was the top expert on that area. Additionally, he had an guest professor, Ruben Piña Cham, who really sparked my interest in studying the little known region of western Mexico”, he explained.

That was in 1968. Today, Pepe Montealegre, as he’s known to the locals in Mascota, is one of the experts on the western coast of Mexico; in archaeological terms, he probably knows the area better than anyone else. Until recently, he was working under the University of North Carolina, which is where he got his first job. He’s now retired, but still works as a research professor at the University of Guadalajara’s Coastal University Center (CUC).

His first formal experience in the Puerto Vallarta region became one of his most important legacies: his work on the rescue of the Cajon de Peña dam. “The INAH’s salvaging director, Eduardo Matos, offered me three salvage projects in 1973. I chose Tomatlan because it was on the coast and CONTINUES PAGE 8

Aunque no se pudo rescatar todo, el esfuerzo fue mayúsculo y el registro de los sitios muy preciso.

“Algunos glifos quedaron debajo del agua, pero existen fotografías de estos publicadas en un libro. No registramos todo, hace unos años me llevaron a ver la Piedra de la Patita, o algo así, esa no la vimos entonces, pero vimos 742 petroglifos y registramos 349 piedras con más de 11 mil grabados. Hay una pintura rupestre en la zona con más de 200 diseños elaborados probablemente con sangre de venado. Esos estudios resultaron clave en la evolución del resto de lo que he presentado en la región”, relata.

Nueve años más pasó estudiando la zona de Puerto Vallarta, donde identificó varios sitios e hizo estudios preliminares en la zona de Ixtapa. Tras cerca de 30 años estudiando región, aunque dice que no tiene un sitio favorito, reconoce su más importante hallazgo lo ha hecho en Mascota, en la zona conocida como El Pantano.

“Pero algo que ha impulsado mi trabajo desde que llegué a San Blas son los primeros agricultores y los contactos que

precise record of all the sites. “Although some of the petroglyphs ended up below water, we published their photographs.

We couldn’t register everything, like the “Piedra de la Patita” or something like that, that I went to see recently. We hadn’t seen that one, but we were able to record 742 petroglyphs and 349 rocks with over 11,000 etchings. There is a cave painting that has about 200 drawings probably made with deer blood. Those studies were key to the rest of the presentations on the region”, he added.

He studied the Puerto Vallarta area for another nine years, identified various sites and did some preliminary digs in the Ixtapa region. After almost thirty years of studying the region, he recognizes that his most important discovery was in Mascota, in the area known as El Pantano. “ I’ve studied all the Pre-Hispanic cultures in the coastal area, from the Archaic to post-Conquest; I’ve seen evidence from cultures established over three thousand years ago in this area. Without a doubt, every epoch has its interesting aspects. But something that has motivated my work since I got to San Blas has been the evidence of the first agricultural people and their contact with other cultures. Esta zona entonces estuvo despoblada hasta que llegaron los agricultores. No era posible sobrevivir en la selva sin los recursos de las plantas domesticadas. En San Blas encontré algo de esos primeros agricultores, lo mismo en Tomatlán o en Puerto Vallarta, muy poco, pero en Mascota hay abundancia de evidencias de esa cultura”, explica.

El sitio de El Pantano, en la zona de Mascota, es importante porque avala científicamente la presencia de agricultores desarrolladas en el Occidente de México mil años antes de Cristo, algo que no era posible probar.

“El Pantano es el panteón más grande que hemos excavado aquí, pero no el único ni el más antiguo. Para ubicar el momento de El Pantano, el 800 aC, es cuando los Olmecas estaban construyendo La Venta en Tabasco. Los restos que pudimos rescatar son sólo los de panteón porque aparentemente las casas que tenían eran construidas con materiales perecederos. En El Pantano se pueden encontrar restos de al menos cinco culturas posteriores, que destruyeron las evidencias de ese primer asentamiento.

Of the close to 500 sites I’ve studied, including Nayarit, there’s only one that contains evidence from the Archaic period. Therefore, this area wasn’t populated until the agricultural people arrived.

You couldn’t survive in the jungle without domesticated plants. I found very little evidence of those initial farmers in San Blas as well as in Tomatlan and Puerto Vallarta. However, in Mascota there is plenty of evidence of that culture,” he explained. “El apoyo de la National Geographic fue fundamental, porque este organismo decide en menos de un año si da el apoyo o no, otras instituciones tardan incluso más de tres años en el análisis. El sitio no podía esperar, habría sido saqueado, el interés de la National Geographic se dio porque es, inusitadamente, un sitio rico para la zona. Es uno de los pocos sitios del Occidente de México con este material, de la cultura de Capacha; algunos sitios de este tipo ya fueron explorados en Colima y Michoacán, pero ninguno tan contundente”, relata.

Ahora más que nunca es de sumo interés contar con todos estos permisos, ya que la banca internacional a través de sus abogados, exige el cumplimiento de las leyes mexicanas antes de autorizar las inversiones en nuestro país.

Aunque la mayoría de los desarrolladores cumplen con la ley, todavía hay algunos que por desconocimiento o por mala asesoría, no lo hacen; nosotros pensamos que sí es posible recibir inversiones, desarrollar proyectos y crear fuentes de trabajo, protegiendo al mismo tiempo nuestra herencia ambiental.

Gran inauguración de MacStore

spectacular y muy concurrida resultó la inauguración de MacStore en el centro comercial La Isla. Autoridades, amigos, invitados y un buen número de adictos a Mac se dieron cita para conocer la tienda que nos pone al día en la icónica marca Apple. ecientemente, nos encontramos con Mikel Bowman (de Mikel Bowman Interiors ubicado en la zona romántica de Puerto Vallarta) y le pedimos nos diera su perspectiva de algunos de los artículos de casa que se deben tener.

PJ: Cuéntanos sobre tu showroom, cómo empezó todo y la inspiración detrás de él?

MB: Bueno, estaba jugando con esta idea de una sala de exposición durante algunos meses en Puerto Vallarta, sin embargo, no estaba seguro de por dónde empezar.

PJ: Entonces, ¿qué hiciste?

MB: Le pregunté a la gente que conozco en PV (Dee de DEE’S COFFEE COMPANY.) Ella me dio un gran consejo como alguien que podría hablar desde su experiencia de crear y construir su propia marca. Juntos, viajamos a varias partes de México buscando inspiración. Y fue entonces fue cuando me di cuenta que sí, tal vez esto podría funcionar. Sabía que quería abrir un showroom y el desafío para mí era cómo hacerlo único, y al mismo tiempo cómodo para que mis clientes pudieran imaginar como sus hogares y negocios podrían verse. Yo estaba muy centrado en encontrar un no convencional espacio en una residencia real o el espacio comercial adecuado. No quería montar una tienda de muebles con un montón de camas, mesas de comedor, accesorios y así sucesivamente. yo. Decidí que quería presentar algunos de mis artículos favoritos en el showroom y mi otros tantos artículos que se pueden ver usando tecnología. MB: Well, I was playing around with this idea of a by appointment showroom for a few months in Puerto Vallarta, however, wasnʼt sure where to begin.!

PJ: So, what did you do?!

MB: I reached out to one of the go to people I know in PV (Dee from DEEʼS COFFEE COMPANY.) She gave me some great advice as someone who could speak from the experience of creating and building her own brand. Dee connected me to Ron Morgan from Ron Morgan Proprieties who was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule (he didn’tʼ even know me) to meet with me to give his advice on what steps would be necessary for me to get my business up and running. !

PJ: That was very nice of them.!

MB: Yes it was very nice of them and much appreciated. I then meet up with a mosaic artist (Christy Beguesse from A Broken Art Mosaic Gallery.) Funnily enough, I was connected to Christy through one of my mothers friends back home in Massachusetts. Together , we traveled to other parts of Mexico for inspiration, and it was then when I realized - yeah maybe this could work.

I knew I wanted to open a showroom and the challenge to myself was how do I make it unique, and at the same time comfortable so that my clients could imagine what their homes and or businesses could look like? I was very focused on finding an unconventional space in an actual residence or the right commercial space. I did not want to set up a furniture store with a lot of beds, dining tables, accessories and so forth. I decided I wanted to feature some of my favorite items in the showroom and my other favorite items can be seen using technology. I also help clients with remodels, custom furniture, and selecting finishes with new condos/homes. I think itʼs helpful when you are in a literal home setting to be able to imagine what your home could look and feel like.!
