Conocer Yucatan es una de las vivencias mas extraordinarias que se puede tener como viajero. Adentrarse en ella, corazón de la cultura maya, es una sucesión de sorpresas que nos llevan a un mundo que se pensaría desaparecido.

El mundo maya no se compone solamente de ruinas y civilizaciones desaparecidas: es un mundo vivo donde están presentes todos los elementos que llevaron a su cultura a los puntos mas exquisitos del conocimiento y el desarrollo. Sus manifestaciones artísticas, arquitectura y sus conocimientos científicos dan buena cuenta de ello.

Sorprende saber que la lengua maya es hablada por mas de 2 millones de personas y que algunos periódicos tienen secciones editadas en maya. La población es mayoritariamente de ascendencia maya y sus costumbres son un sincretismo entre sus antiguas creencias y las que trajeron los conquistadores en el siglo XVI. No se sabe si los mayas provienen del altiplano de Guatemala o de la costa del Golfo pero nos legaron un idioma escrito, y los jeroglíficos de sus ciudades son siempre los mismos. Recibieron influencias de otros pueblos y, a partir de ellas, construyeron la más importante cultura prehispánica.

rom a trip I made last January to Yucatan I decided to write a series of articles about the Mayan world and its characteristics to try to motivate our readers to approach that unique space in the world. Knowing Yucatan is one of the most extraordinary experiences that you can have as a traveler. To enter it, heart of the Mayan culture, is a succession of surprises that lead us to a world that would be thought to have disappeared.

The Mayan world is not only composed of ruins and disappeared civilizations: it is a living world where all the elements that brought its culture to the most exquisite points of knowledge and development are present. Its artistic manifestations, architecture and its scientific knowledge give good account of it.

It is surprising to know that the Mayan language is spoken by more than 2 million people and that some newspapers have sections edited in Maya. The population is mainly of Mayan descent and their customs are a syncretism between their old beliefs and those that brought the conquerors in XVI century.

It is not known whether the Maya come from the highlands of Guatemala or the Gulf Coast but they have bequeathed us a written language, and the hieroglyphs of their cities are always the same. They received influences from other peoples and, from them, they built the most important pre-Hispanic culture.

Creían en fuerzas cósmicas que habían trazado su destino y se sometían como esclavos al calendario en el que cada día estaba consagrado a una divinidad. Se sugieren dificultades de abastecimiento agrícola: el suelo labrado tan primitivamente producía cada vez menos. Muy pocos se quedaron, para quemar copal en honor de sus dioses, como hacen todavía hoy los lacandones.

CHICHEN ITZA

La ciudad maya por antonomasia mas conocida en el mundo y visitada por mas de 2 millones de personas al año.

El nombre de Chichén Itzá se deriva probablemente de un sumidero grande conocido como el Cenote Sagrado o “boca del pozo de los Itzáes”, en el cual los mayas arrojaron ofrendas de jade y oro y como la presencia de huesos testifica, sacrificios humanos. La historia temprana del sitio aún no está clara, pero el establecimiento estaba determinado por el período clásico (250-900 c. CE). Con el colapso de Teotihuacan, los migrantes pueden haber venido al sitio de distintas partes de Mesoamérica, y parece probable que hubo contacto con los itzaes, un grupo Maya. They did not know the wheel, nor did they have draft animals, but they built stepped pyramids, temples and palaces. They did not know the plow, but watched from the observatories the orbit of the stars and had the most accurate calendar of the world.

They believed in cosmic forces that had traced their destiny and submitted themselves as slaves to the calendar in which each day was consecrated to a divinity. That divinity determined their good and bad days and they did nothing without consulting him.

CHICHEN ITZA The most famous Mayan city in the world and visited by more than 2 million people a year.

The name Chichen Itza is probably derived from a large sump known as the Sacred Cenote or “mouth of the Well of the Itzáes,” in which the Maya threw offerings of jade and gold and as the presence of bones testifies, human sacrifices. The early history of the site is still unclear, but the establishment was determined by the classical period (250-900 BC). With the collapse of Teotihuacan, migrants may have come to the site of different parts of Mesoamerica, and it seems likely that there was contact with the Itzaes, a Mayan group. tion seems to coincide with the influence of Toltec civilization. That Chichen Itza was a thriving commercial center with a port on Cerritos Island is evidenced by the findings of goods from other Central American countries, for example turquoise from the north, gold discs from the south and the obsidian of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Flourishing between c. 750 and 1200 CE, the site is rich in monumental architecture and sculpture that promote themes of militarism and displays images of jaguars, eagles and feathered serpents. It was probably a capital city ruling over a Confederacy of neighboring states.

Chichen Itza fell in a rapid decline in 1200 CE and Mayapan became the new capital. However, unlike many other sites, Chichen Itza never disappeared from memory, and the city continued to be revered and cherished as a place of pilgrimage and ascendancy in the Postclassic period and until the Spanish conquest and beyond.

The city has traditionally been divided into two distinct parts and periods, although there are some coincidences both in design and in time, and together they cover about 16 square kilometers. The earliest, in the south, is native Maya dating from the Epiclassic period (c. 8001000 CE) with buildings showing distinct “Puuc” architectural style and Mayan hieroglyphs.

The plan is more scattered than in other parts of the city and built on a north-south axis more or less, may reflect the course of the water source of Xtoloc Cenote.

The second part of the city has traditionally been dated to 1000-1200 CE and is more mysterious, creating one of the most controversial debates in Mesoamerican archeology. Built in the fluorescent style and along an orderly plan, it shows many CONTINUES PAGE 10

Pirámide de Kukulcán

Dominación Chichén Itzá es la enorme pirámide de Kukulcán, también conocido como el Castillo (castillo), construido antes de 1050 CE. La pirámide es de 24 metros de altura, cada lado es 58-9 metros de ancho, y cuenta con nueve niveles. A cada lado de la pirámide es una escalera que conduce a una modesta estructura cuadrada. Este edificio cumbre tiene dos cámaras y está decorado con paneles de relieve jaguar y escudos redondos. Hasta hace pocos años se podía visitar pero la tremenda afluencia de visitantes hizo que las autoridades decidieran cerrarla para su protección .

The building as seen today was probably a result of remodeling to incorporate the characteristics of Toltec design.

Pyramid of Kukulcan The huge pyramid of Kukulcan, also known as the Castle, was built before 1050 CE. The pyramid is 24 meters high, each side is 589 meters wide, and has nine levels. On each side of the pyramid is a staircase leading to a modest square structure. This summit building has two chambers and is decorated with jaguar relief panels and round shields. Each stairway has 91 steps, except the north side which has 92, and adding the four together, then, you reach a significant 365. Viewed from above, the cross created by the stairs that imposed on the top of the base square pyramid resemble the Maya symbol for zero. In the spring equinox, the triangular shadows of the different levels of the pyramid are thrown to the sides of the north staircase, giving the illusion that a giant serpent is lowering the structure built in honor of Kukulkan, Mayan name given to Quetzalcoatl And is depicted as a feathered serpent.

Used for religious ceremonies and human sacrifices, inside the pyramid was built another pyramid with internal access. Inside was a chacmool and a red jaguar throne inlaid with jade. This smaller pyramid was probably used for a royal burial. Until a few years ago it was possible to visit but the tremendous influx of visitors caused that the authorities decided to close it for its protection. In 2013 researchers and anthropologists discovered a third much older pyramid on which the other 2 posterior ones were constructed.

The temple of the warriors Another huge structure in Chichen Itza is the temple of the warriors, a pyramid of three levels with neighboring colonnades on two sides creating a semi-enclosed court. It was built in the early classic post period, sometime between 800 and 1050

Templo de los guerreros

Otra enorme estructura en Chichén Itzá es el templo de los guerreros, una pirámide de tres niveles con vecinos columnatas en dos lados la creación de un tribunal semicerrado. Fue construido en el período clásico temprano post, en algún momento entre 800 y 1050 CE. El edificio en la parte superior de la pirámide tiene una puerta enmarcada con serpientes emplumadas y dos cámaras; uno contenía un chacmool y el otro un trono. La estructura comparte muchas características comunes con las pirámides toltecas de Tula.

Gran juego de pelota

El gran juego de pelota de Chichén Itzá, mide 146 m x 36 m, es el más grande de Mesoamérica. Fue construido entre 1050 y 1200 CE y es sumamente inusual que sus paredes laterales sean verticales y

Chichen Itza fue una de las grandes ciudades mesoamericanas y sigue siendo hoy uno de los sitios turísticos más populares en México visitado por mas de 2 millones de personas al año.

Great ball game

The great ball game of Chichen Itza, measuring 146 m x 36 m, is the largest in Mesoamerica. The lower parts of the walls and the ring on each wall are profusely decorated with serpent sculptures, symbolic representations and warrior scenes. The dimensions of the court are so large that it is difficult to imagine that actual games could be held here. The rings, for example, through which players were to direct the ball of solid rubber, are placed at a height of 8 m. The reliefs on the walls of the court remind us of the ritual function of ball games; For example, there is a frightening scene of two teams of seven men face to face and while the captain of the losing team is beheaded. Chichen Itza was one of the great Mesoamerican cities and remains today one of the most popular tourist sites in Mexico visited by more than 2 million people a year.

hen Puerto Vallarta took off as a tourist destination in the 60´s and 70´s, much of the beachfront construction, some for lack of knowledge and others for lack of supervision by the proper authorities, encroached upon the federal maritime zone.

Meteorological phenomenons such as hurricanes, earthquakes and “El niño”, have caused movements in the tides which have affected the coast, for which some

residences that were originallly constructed on private property are now totally or partially in the federal zone.

n 1839 el explorador John Lloyd Stephens fue nombrado embajador especial en Centroamérica por el presidente estadounidense Martin van Buren con la encomienda de registrar detalladamente las formas de vida, costumbres e historia de Centroamérica y el Sur de México.

Junto con el ilustrador Frederick Catherwood, Stephens recorrió la región desde 1839 a 1841 abarcando mas de 3,000 millas en su periplo. Resultado de este viaje es la publicación entre 1837 a 1843 de las aventuras de ambos en cuatro libros : Incidentes de viaje en América Central, Chiapas y Yucatán, dejando unas crónicas ricas en detalles de la sociedad , el momento político que presenció y, especialmente, una valiosa documentación de sitios arqueológicos desde México hasta Honduras. Ampliamente recomendable su lectura que a pesar de los casi 200 años transcurridos desde que se escribió no ha perdido actualidad ni encanto.

En 1895 el vicecónsul norteamericano en la zona, Edward H. Thompson (18561935) que había leído los libros de Stephens y además era arqueólogo aficionado, se mostró muy interesado en la zona donde se asentaba Chichen Itzá. Stephens había documentado ampliamente su paso por la ciudad y la importancia que tu-

n 1839 the explorer John Lloyd Stephens was named special ambassador in Central America by the American president Martin van Buren with the commission to register in detail the forms of life, customs and history of Central America and the South of Mexico.

Together with illustrator Frederick Catherwood, Stephens toured the region from 1839 to 1841 spanning more than 3,000 miles on its journey. The result of this trip is the publication between 1837 and 1843 of the adventures of both in four books: Travel Incidents in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan, leaving chronicles rich in details of society, the political moment he witnessed and, especially, A valuable documentation of archaeological sites from Mexico to Honduras. It is widely recommended to read that despite the almost 200 years since it was written, it has not lost its charm.

Hay que recordar que cuando Stephens entró a Chichén , ésta no era mas que un montón de piedras y apenas restos de algunas pirámides envueltas por la selva según lo acreditan los dibujos de Catherwood. De cualquier manera el cónsul se mostró sumamente interesado en el lugar , sobre todo en el cenote sagrado ya que Stephens había descrito que era un lugar de peregrinación maya y se usaba para sacrificios ceremoniales y ofrendas religiosas, por lo que decidió comprar la plantación henequenera que incluía la zona arqueológica de Chichen por la fabulosa cantidad de ¡75 dólares!

El consul Thompson reconstruyó la hacienda que durante la Guerra de Casta había sido destruida y ya instalado allí y con el libro de Stephens en la mano se puso explorar la región apoyado por el Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology de la Universidad de Harvard, se concentró en Loltún y en la tumba del Gran Sacerdote en Chichén Itzá, siendo que todos los objetos encontrados fueron a dar a la Columbian Exposition, este tesoro fue trasladado posteriormente al Field Museum de Chicago; siguió sus exploraciones en Labná y Uxmal, lo que despertó, aparentemente, muchas protestas. Sin importarle las opiniones ajenas y debido a que la década de 1890 había comenzado con una gran fiebre de interés extranjero por las antigüedades mayas, Thompson no se

It should be remembered that when Stephens entered Chichen, it was nothing more than a pile of stones and just a few remains of some pyramids wrapped in the jungle as Catherwood’s drawings attest. In any case the consul was extremely interested in the place, especially in the sacred cenote since Stephens had described that it was a place of Mayan pilgrimage and was used for ceremonial sacrifices and religious offerings, reason why it decided to buy the henequen plantation that Included the archaeological site of Chichen for the fabulous amount of $ 75!

The consul Thompson rebuilt the hacienda that during the Caste War had been destroyed and installed there and with the book of Stephens in hand he explored the region supported by the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Harvard University, concentrated In Loltún and in the grave of the Great Priest in Chichén Itzá, by the promise that all the objects found were to be given to the Columbian Exposition, this treasure was later transferred to the Field Museum of Chicago; Continued its explorations in Labná and Uxmal, which apparently aroused many protests. anduvo con chiquitas y decidió dragar el Cenote Sagrado en dos tandas : una de 1904 a 1907 y otra de 1910 a 1911 encontrando cientos de piezas de oro y jade, las cuales, por supuesto sacó del país las cuales se pueden apreciar hoy día el el Museo Peabody.

El éxito de esta aventura se evidencia en la salida ilegal de alrededor de 30.000 piezas arqueológicas de diversos materiales, sin que fuera detectada a lo largo de tres décadas, gracias a la complacencia del presidente Porfirio Díaz, el gobernador Felipe Carrillo Puerto y otros funcionarios menores. En 1926 l gobierno del Presidente Plutarco Elías Calles fincó cargos civiles y penales contra el estadounidense, pero años después la Suprema Corte de Justicia falló a favor de los herederos de Thompson, ya que este había muerto en 1935, dejando impune un atentado al patrimonio cultural de México.

En los años 30’s mientras el litigio por la posesión de las tierras de Thompson se dirimía en las cortes mexicanas éste decidió venderlas a uno de los hombres mas ricos de Yucatán llamado Fernanado Barbachano Peón, el cual adquirió las propiedades del norteamericano y se puso a construir hoteles (Hacienda Chichen Resort y Mayaland) dentro de Chichen, siendo éstos los únicos en el mundo que se encuentran dentro de un área arqueológica.

Hoy en día los Barbachano son los dueños de los terrenos donde se asienta Chi-

chen Itzá pero no son propietarios de los restos arqueológicos que se encuentran bajo la figura jurídica del comodato.

Debido a esta particularísima situación, cuando se visita Chichen Itzá durante el día, los visitantes se encuentran además de las ruinas con un inmenso ejército de vendedores ambulantes instalados en sus puestos dentro de la zona arqueológica. Sin duda, un verdadero tianguis.

o hay duda que viajar es uno de los principales estímulos que tenemos los seres humanos. Viajar no es solo un gran placer, es una necesidad urgente e impostergable; después de 10 o 11 meses trabajando -la mayoría- en contextos urbanos que tienen unas altísimas cuotas de desgaste mental, emocional y físico, planear las vacaciones es casi un oasis en el maremagnum de la vida diaria. En lo personal, no tengo mayor placer de pensar a qué lugar voy a ir, que hay que visitar, dónde alojarse , cuantos días… en fin, todos los elementos que conforman ese sueño largamente acariciado que se llama vacación.
