Hoy en día el mundo maya está vivo y es, sin duda, la mayor riqueza cultural de México.

Dos millones de personas hablan el maya; en Yucatan algunos periódicos se publican en maya Los mayas y sus descendientes forman una muy considerable población y son los encargados de mantener sus tradiciones y creencias.

En un principio los mayas se establecieron en el período pre-clásico (2000 aC a 250 dC), según la cronología de Mesoamérica, muchas ciudades mayas alcanzaron su mayor desarrollo de Estado durante el período Clásico (250 dC a 900 dC), y continuaron durante todo el periodo Posclásico hasta la llegada de los españoles. En su apogeo, la cultura maya fue una de las civilizaciones mas densamente pobladas y culturalmente una de las sociedades más dinámicas del mundo.

he Península of Yucatán, home to jaguars, cenotes, jungles and ruins, is one of the privileged places on the planet. In its heyday, Mayan culture was one of the most densely populated and culturally one of the most dynamic societies in the world.

La estructura de la sociedad maya se desarrollo principalmente en las tres ciudades mayas: Chichen-Itzá, Mayapan e Uxmal. En el año 1004 fue creada la confederación Maya, que reunió a esas tres grandes ciudades. Decenas de ciudades y poblados serian creados a lo largo de los doscientos años siguientes, expandiendo el poder político de los mayas en la región. En realidad, las ciudades mayas importantes controlaban las aldeas y tierras próxima.

Ellos tenían autonomía económica y política, y generalmente eran gobernadas por familias nobles locales. Cada ciudad maya era independiente y tenia un jefe supremo (halach uinc), y el cargo era hereditario.

Después del periodo de unión (entre los siglos X y XI) las ciudades de la Confederación Maya entraron en confrontación, siendo la ciudad maya de Mayapan la victoriosa. La hegemonía política de esa ciudad fue sustentada debido a una fuerte base guerrera. Innumerables revueltas explosionaron en la región maya, y en 1441 la Ciudad de Mayapan sería incendiada; las grandes ciudades mayas serian abandonadas a causas de las guerras, las catástrofes naturales y principalmente, el declinio de la agricultura llevaron a la sociedad maya a la decadencia.

Cuando los europeos llegaron a la región ( en el

año 1559), los signos de debilitamiento de la civilización maya eran evidentes, convirtiéndose la conquista y colonización más fácil.

EL ESTILO PUUC

La región Puuc en la península de Yucatán en el sur de México está reconocida como una de las áreas más bellas del mundo maya. “Puuc” en maya yucateco significa “colina” y esta área es el único lugar en esta peCONTINUA PÁGINA 10

The area occupied by the Maya can be divided into two regions. Those of the highlands (the area that today are occupied by the republics of El Salvador and Guatemala) and the zone of the lowland Mayas that was where they basically developed their culture, with an orography of limestone lands well irrigated by the rivers that flowed in the Caribbean and in the Gulf of Mexico.

The structure of Mayan society developed mainly in the three Mayan cities:

Chichen-Itza, Mayapan and Uxmal. In the year 1004 was created the Maya confederation, which brought together these three great cities. Dozens of cities and towns would be created over the next two hundred years, expanding the political power of the Maya in the region. In fact, important Mayan cities controlled the nearby villages and lands. They had economic and political autonomy, and were generally ruled by local noble families. Each Mayan city was independent and had a supreme chief, halach uinc, and the position was hereditary.

After the period of union (between the X and XI centuries), the cities of the Maya Confederation clashed, Mayapan ending as the victorious city. The political hegemony of that city was sustained due to a strong warrior base. Countless riots exploded in the Mayan region, and in 1441 the City of Mayapan was set on fire ; The great Mayan cities were abandoned of causes of the wars, the natural catastrophes and mainly, the decline of the agriculture. That drove the Mayan society to decadence. When the Europeans arrived in the region (in 1559), the signs of weakening of the Maya civilization were evident, making conquest and colonization easier.

THE PUUC STYLE The Puuc region on the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico is recognized as one of the most beautiful areas of the Mayan world. “Puuc” in YuCONTINUES PAGE 10

Hay ocho yacimientos arqueológicos importantes abiertos al público, al igual que muchos yacimientos sin excavar y pueblos y aldeas mayas contemporáneos. El yacimiento arqueológico principal es Uxmal, el cual está rodeado por otros siete sitios: Kabah, Sayil, Xlapac, Labná, Chacmultún, Loltún, y Oxkintok. Estas antiguas ciudades, declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, comparten una arquitectura maya muy ornamentada conocida como Puuc. En tiempos antiguos, estas ciudades estaban conectadas a carreteras llamadas “sac be’o’ob” en maya yucateco. El estilo de decoración refleja una intensa adoración a Chac. Desde el 300 al 1200 d.C. esta región prosperó con una gran población de gente maya.

La expresión del arte Puuc no sólo abarca a las construcciones arquitectónicas, sino que también se encuentra en pintura y cerámica.

Las características de la arquitectura Puuc son los muros lisos, verticales en la parte inferior, con frisos que decoran la parte superior, rematados por cornisas planas y grecas. El uso de las columnas para separar los espacios y las puertas de acceso, así como las escalinatas, las bóvedas ovaladas y en triángulo trunco.

Los edificios están decorados con mascarones, muchos de ellos en representación del dios de la lluvia, Chaac, con su gran y característica

The buildings are decorated with masks, many of them representing the god of the rain, Chaac, with its great and characteristic nose that evokes the rays; Columns, that evoke the reeds of the walls of the huts; Corrugated serpents, as well as panels with hieroglyphs and high crests.

También se aprecia, en algunas ciudades, influencias de origen nahua y el seguimiento del culto a Quetzalcóatl, que se integraron con las bases originales de la tradición Puuc. A esto se le ha dado en llamar Puuc modificado. Como rasgo característico de este estilo, son los mascarones, que representan a Quetzalcoatl, para los mayas Kukulkán, Más allá de los impresionantes elementos decorativos de este estilo arquitectónico, el uso de una base de hormigón es considerada un avance sobre las técnicas que se vinieron utilizando hasta entonces, la utilización de grandes piedras, que realizaban la labor de cimentación. La utilización de la albañilería con recubrimiento de chapas de piedra, permitió la construcción de estancias más amplias y duraderas, que se mantienen en pie, aún cuando buena parte de la construcción se ha desmoronado. Hay que destacar que las cresterías y los edificios estaban pintados de brillantes colores.

UXMAL

Uxmal se localiza a 62 kilómetros al sur de Mérida y, desde siempre, ha sido la ciudad referente de esta región maya. Es sin duda el asentamiento más representativo de la arquitectura de la Región Puuc.

In some cities there are also influences of Nahuatl origin and the follow-up of the cult of Quetzalcoatl, which were integrated with the original bases of the Puuc tradition. This has been called Puuc modified.

As characteristic feature of this style, are the masks, who represent Quetzalcoatl, for the Maya: Kukulkán Beyond the impressive decorative elements of this architectural style, the use of a concrete base is considered an advance on the techniques that were used until then, the use of large stones, which made the foundation work. The use of stone veneer masonry allowed the construction of larger and more durable rooms, which are still standing, even though much of the building has collapsed. It is necessary to emphasize that the cresterías and the buildings were painted of brilliant colors.

UXMAL Uxmal is located 62 kilometers south of Merida and has always been the referent city of this Mayan region. It is without a doubt the most representative settlement of the architecture of the Puuc Region.

The traditional interpretation of the word meaning is “Three times built”, which could be an allusion to several successive occupations of the site. There is no proof of these hypotheses. It was walled and counted, in its splendor, with about 25 000 inhabitants.

De estas hipótesis no hay comprobación alguna. Estuvo amurallada y contó, en su esplendor, con unos 25 000 habitantes.

Las referencias más antiguas son las recogidas en los Chilam Balam de Chumayel (escritos en maya con caracteres latinos, donde se relata la historia de los mayas). Con esta base, y con las interpretaciones de las inscripciones de los anillos de la cancha del juego de pelota, se estima que Uxmal fue fundada en el siglo VII, durante la primera ocupación, en el periodo clásico.

También está registrada en Chilam Balam (en el Katun 2 ahau (años 987 al 1007), la segunda ocupación, ocurrida en el siglo X, realizada por emigrantes procedentes del Altiplano Central, de etnia tutul xiúes. De este periodo, hay huella en las edificaciones. Los anales en lengua maya, fechan la llegada de los xiúes a Uxmal entre el año 987 y el 1007. Este

grupo introdujo los componentes nahuas y, con ellos, el culto a Tláloc y Quetzalcóatl. El dios de la lluvia, Chaac, está presente desde antes de la venida de los nahuas y por la gran dependencia de la lluvia que tenían los habitantes de toda la zona Puuc.

A pesar de que la arquitectura de estilo Puuc es la predominante en la zona, también se han encontrado vestigios de otros estilos, reunidos en el mismo lugar. El estilo chenes se refleja en las fachadas de los edificios, así como en representaciones de la serpiente emplumada, de estilo tolteca y en rastros hallados en otras esculturas, con características mexicas y olmecas, manifestándose rasgos teotihuacanos en algunos de los mascarones que representan al dios Chaac.

Los edificios de Uxmal se encuentran ubicados sobre un eje norte sur, algo que es habitual en las ciudades de esta región.

Se agrupan, aprovechando las características del terreno, formando patios, normalmente cuadrangulares y cerrados, aunque hay algunos independientes. Las fachadas están decoradas con mascarones de Chac, el Dios de la Lluvia, grecas, paneles con jeroglíficos y altas cresterías.

Entre los edificios más representativos están la Pirámide del Adivino, el Cuadrángulo de las Monjas y la Casa de las Palomas.

Si tiene oportunidad no deje de visitar Uxmal, le va a sorprender la magnificencia de la ciudad y su arquitectura exquisita, la mas de toda la región.

It is also registered in Chilam Balam (in the Katun 2 ahau (years 987 to 1007), the second occupation, occurring in the tenth century, by emigrants from the Central Altiplano, from the Tutul xiúes ethnic group. The annals in Mayan language, date the arrival of the Xiúes to Uxmal between 987 and 1007. This group introduced the Nahuatl components and, with them, the cult to Tlaloc and Quetzalcoatl. The god of rain, Chaac, Is present from before the arrival of the Nahuatls and the great dependence of the rain that had the inhabitants of all the Puuc zone.

Although the Puuc style architecture is predominant in the area, vestiges of other styles have also been found gathered in the same place. The chenes style is reflected in the facades of the buildings, as well as in representations of the feathered serpent, of Toltec style and in traces found in other sculptures, with Mexican and Olmec characteristics, Teotihuacan features manifesting in some of the masks representing the god Chaac.

The buildings of Uxmal are located on a north south axis, something that is habitual of the cities of this region. They are grouped, taking advantage of the characteristics of the land, forming courtyards, usually quadrangular and closed, although there are some independent. The facades are decorated with masks of Chac, the God of the Rain, grecas, panels with hieroglyphics and high cresterías.

Among the most representative buildings are the Pyramid of the Fortuneteller, the Quadrangle of the Nuns and the House of the Pigeons.

o hay duda que viajar es uno de los principales estímulos que tenemos los seres humanos. eorge Lucas , el creador de Star Wars , construirá un museo de 1000 millones de dólares para albergar su colección de pintura, memorabilia cinematográfica e historieta. El alcalde de Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, confirmó a Reuters que el Museo Lucas de Arte Narrativo será erigido en el parque Exposition, en el centro de la ciudad, en las inmediaciones de la Universidad del Sur de California, donde el artista estudió cine junto a otras luminarias de Hollywood como Steven Spielberg.

El museo iba a construirse en Chicago, ciudad natal de Melody Hobson, esposa de Lucas, pero ante distintas dificultades legales y las protestas de organizaciones ambientales de esa ciudad, su factótum decidió mudar la institución a Los Ángeles.

Previamente, el proyecto -que comenzó a gestarse hace una década- estaba pensado para levantarse en San Francisco, más precisamente en la zona conocida como Presidio, pero fue rechazado por el impacto que tendría en el parque nacional Golden Gate.

eorge Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, will build a $ 1 billion museum to house his collection of painting, film memorabilia and comic strip. Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, confirmed to Reuters that the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be erected at the Exposition Park in the downtown area near the University of Southern California where the artist studied film with other Hollywood luminaries like Steven Spielberg.

The museum was to be built in Chicago, hometown of Lucas’s wife Melody Hobson, but faced with various legal difficulties and protests from environmental organizations in that city, his factotum decided to move the institution to Los Angeles. Previously, the project which began a decade ago - was planned to rise in San Francisco, more precisely in the area known as Presidio, but was rejected because of the impact it would have on the Golden Gate National Park.

“El museo no tendrá barreras que dividan artificialmente el arte popular del culto, permitiendo al visitante explorar un amplio abanico de formas de narración visual.

Aquellos que normalmente no concurrirían a una institución tradicional dedicada a las bellas artes serán invitados aquí a relacionarse e identificarse con formas de arte que conocen y aman”, explicó Lucas en el comunicado que anunciaba la concreción del proyecto, fuertemente orientado a la educación, que se espera que sea inaugurado en 2020.

Of course the great attraction of the museum - designed in the shape of a spaceship by the Chinese architect Ma Yansong will be the huge film collection gathered by Lucas, where the designs, set design, costumes and special effects of the Star Wars saga will be the center of attention, although the filmmaker has also acquired over the years numerous elements belonging to all branches of production in the classic Hollywood era (Frankenstein, The Ten Commandments) and European cinema (the special effects of Journey to The Moon, by Melies) and Soviet (such as the famous scene of the Odessa Staircase of The Battleship Potemkin).

“The museum will not have barriers that artificially divide the cult folk art, allowing visitors to explore a wide range of forms of visual storytelling. Those who would not normally attend a traditional institution dedicated to the fine arts will be invited here to relate and identify with art forms they know and love, “Lucas said in the statement announcing the completion of the highly education-oriented project, which is expected to be inaugurated in 2020.

Toma varios años para que un look, digamos “industrial” o “Mid-Century Modern” ejecute su curso. Y a veces, parece como si algunas de estas tendencias nunca fueran a morir. Mid-Century Modern es un buen ejemplo de una tendencia de larga vida que ha existido por cerca de dos décadas. Y sin embargo, poco a poco, los estilos y las ideas interiores están cambiando. Por ejemplo, este año, a diferencia de los últimos , las grandes cadenas de muebles sugieren que 2017 será el año del Minimalismo japonés y el Vintage Moderno italiano.

Here’s a quick look at a few of the trends that prognosticators predict will be hot this year.

1. Green as the new black.

Deep dark green, emerald green, forest green and deep olives, seem to be the “it” color of the year, as seen above and below. Green is organic and soothing, and depending on the exact tone, can come off as homey or regal. Expect to see more forest green sofas and emerald green occasional chairs!

Y no es sólo verde esmeralda que está de vuelta en una gran manera, cualquier tono joya desde el azul profundo, el magenta o el púrpura profundo son favorecidos este año. Los tonos joya son cálidos pero elegantes. En terciopelo, proyectan una sensación de lujo y comodidad elegante que es un cambio agradable del metal afilado y del cuero del estilo industrial, o los grises prim, silenciados y los beiges del Mid-Century. And it’s not just emerald green that is back in a big way, any jewel tones, from deep blue to magenta to deep purple are favored this year. Jewel tones are warm but elegant. In velvet, they project a sense of luxury and posh comfort which is a nice change from the hard-edged metal and distressed leather of the industrial style, or the prim, muted grays and beiges of Mid-Century Modern. Below, a living room manages to use many jewel tones while still coming off as light-hearted and lively.

Otra tendencia interesante que hemos observado es el movimiento hacia los bastidores tapizados sobre los marcos de madera o de metal . La tapicería puede lucir como lujo extremado recuerde como se ven las cabeceras de los hoteles de gama alta.

Lo bueno de la tapicería, es que sin mucho esfuerzo o fanfarria se puede lograr un ambiente completamente diferente. Arriba, un dormitorio tradicional tiene una cabecera en polvo azul que sugiere la comodidad hogareña de la casa de la abuela. Y abajo, las cabeceras altas tapizadas en terciopelo exudan una sensación de lujo y sensualidad.

Another interesting trend we’ve noted is the move toward upholstered bedframes over the wooden and metal frames of the past. Upholstery can come off as luxe — like something you might see in a high-end hotel.

The nice thing about upholstery, is that without much effort or fanfare, you can achieve a completely different vibe.

Above, a traditional bedroom sports a powder blue headboard that suggests the homey comfort of grandma’s house. And below, tall headboards upholstered in velvet exude a sense of luxury and sensuality.

With the advent of the industrial look, metals have had a good, long run. But in 2017, prognosticators predict that people will be looking to bring more warmth into their homes. This may come in the form of terra cotta tiles, cork walls or floors, or more use of wood.

5. Closed kitchens.

This is a surprise development, as open kitchens have been heavily favored for a number of years. But naturally, as with any trend, there is always a backlash. Although many of us love the interactivity and informality of an open kitchen there are those that crave the privacy and formality of a closed-off space.
