El Jurado Pritzker ha escogido al arquitecto alemán Frei Otto como el cuadragésimo ganador del Premio Pritzker, el segundo alemán en ser reconocido y el primero que lo recibe de manera póstuma.

econocido por sus visionarias experimentaciones y diseños arquitectónicos asociados al uso de tensoestructuras, -destacando la cubierta del Estadio Olímpico de Múnich 1972, el arquitecto alemán falleció a los 89 años el pasado lunes 09 de marzo, obligando a la organización a adelantar en dos semanas el anuncio oficial del Premio, originalmente programado para el lunes 23 de marzo.

El Jurado destaca en su comunicado oficial que Otto “toma inspiración de la naturaleza y los procesos naturales encontrados ahí. Descubrió nuevas maneras de usar las últimas cantidades de materiales y energía para generar espacios. Practicó, desarrolló y avanzó ideas de sustentabilidad, incluso antes que la palabra fuera acuñada”.

German architect Frei Otto, who died on Monday aged 89, has been named the 2015 Pritzker Prize laureate.

tto was posthumously awarded the world’s richest architecture prize for “his visionary ideas, inquiring mind, belief in freely sharing knowledge and inventions, his collaborative spirit and concern for the careful use of resources,” the prize jury announced.

Frei Otto, born almost 90 years ago in Germany, has spent his long career researching, experimenting, and developing a most sensitive architecture that has influenced countless others throughout the world. The lessons of his pioneering work in the field of lightweight structures that are adaptable, changeable and carefully use limited resources are as relevant today as when they were first proposed over 60 years ago. He has embraced a definition of architect to include researcher, inventor, form-finder, engineer, builder, teacher, colContinues page 10

Antes de su inesperada muerte, Frei Otto fue informado de su reconocimiento a través de la Directora Ejecutiva del Premio Pritzker, Martha Thorne, quien lo visitó en su hogar en Alemania. “Estoy ahora tan feliz de recibir este premio y quisiera agradecer al Jurado y la familia Pritzker.

Nunca he hecho algo para obtener este premio. Mi motivación era diseñar nuevos tipos de edificios para ayudar a la gente pobre, especialmente después de desastres naturales y catástrofes.... Tienen acá a un hombre feliz”.

Entre las principales obras del arquitecto alemán, se destaca el Pabellón de Alemania Federal de la Expo Montreal de 1967, cuya estructura fue prefabricada en Alemania y montada en la ciudad canadiense, siendo considerada un hito de la exhibición por su gracia y originalidad.

Las cubiertas a gran escala diseñadas para la cubierta del Estadio Olímpico de Múnich 1972 combinan ligereza y fuerza, convirtiéndolo en un verdadero desafío que muchos creyeron imposible de alcanzar en la épica. Su capacidad para pensar, diseñar y construir estructuralmente en estadios, piscinas y espacios públicos es aún impresionante hasta el día de hoy.

Según el fallo oficial del Jurado del mayor premio de arquitectura a nivel mundial, Frei Otto “ha producido sin precedentes creativos y frescos espacios.

También ha creado conocimiento. En esto reside su profunda influencia: no en cómo las formas pueden ser copiadas, sino a través de los caminos que se han abierto gracias a sus investigaciones y descubrimientos.

He first became known for his tent structures used as temporary exhibition pavilions. The constructions at the German Federal Garden exhibitions and other festivals of the 1950s were functional, beautiful, “floating” roofs that seemed to effortlessly provide shelter, and then were easily dissembled after the events.

The cable net structure employed for the German Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal, prefabricated in Germany and assembled on site in a short period of time, was a highlight of the exhibition for its grace and originality. The impressive large-scale roofs designed for the Munich Olympics of 1972, combining lightness and strength, were a building challenge that many said could not be achieved. The architectural landscape for stadium, pool and public spaces, a result of the efforts of a large team, is still impressive today.

Taking inspiration from nature and the processes found there, he sought ways to use the least amount of materials and energy to enclose spaces. He practiced and advanced ideas of sustainability, even before the word was coined. He was inspired by natural phenomena – from birds’ skulls to soap bubbles and spiders’ webs. He spoke of the need to understand the “physical, biological and technical processes which give rise to objects.” Branching concepts from the 1960s optimized structures to support large flat roofs. The Mechtenberg footbridges, with the use of humble slender rods and connecting nodes, but with advanced knowledge, produce an attractive filigree pattern and span distances up to 30 meters. Otto’s constructions are in harmony with nature and always seek to do more with less.

Virtually all the works that are associated with Frei Otto have been designed in collaboration with other professionals.

He was often approached to form part of a team to tackle complex architectural and structural challenges. The inventive results attest to outstanding collective efforts of multidisciplinary teams.

Throughout his life, Frei Otto has produced imaginative, fresh, unprecedented spaces and constructions. He has also created knowledge. Herein resides his deep influence: not in forms to be copied, but through the paths that have been opened by his research and discoveries.

His contributions to the field of architecture are not only skilled and talented, but also generous.

For his visionary ideas, inquiring mind, belief in freely sharing knowledge and inventions, his collaborative spirit and concern for the careful use of resources, the 2015 Pritzker Architecture Prize is awarded to Frei Otto.

Policia aresta a dos hermanos Police Arrest Brothers Who que vendieron un Goya falso Sold a Fake Goya… and Were y les pagaron con dinero falso Paid with Fake Cash

L

a Policía Nacional española arrestó por estafa a dos hermanos residentes en la ciudad de Gerona que pretendían vender a un jeque árabe un cuadro que atribuían a Goya. Al final, los imputados fueron víctimas de su propio engaño y perdieron 300.000 euros.

En el año 2006 la Audiencia Provincial de Girona sentenció que ese cuadro, el “Retrato de Antonio María Esquivel”, no era obra de Francisco de Goya. Aún así, los hermanos emplearon el certificado de autenticidad que esa Audiencia había anulado, para tratar de engañar a un supuesto jeque árabe que -según les decía. Quería revender el cuadro en el mercado asiático.

El caso es que el jeque árabe o lo que realmente fuera el hombre al que los dos hermanos querían engañar, tampoco jugaba limpio. Su objetivo era darles gato por liebre y lograr que le entregaran la pintura a cambio de nada. Según informa La vanguardia, un representante suyo entregó en Turín a intermediarios de los

panish Police have arrested two brothers from Girona, Spain, who attempted to sell a fake Francisco de Goya painting to a purported sheikh.

But the “sheikh” was no victim: he paid the pair with photocopied money.

The con artists realized they had been tricked when they tried to deposit 1.7 million Swiss francs (1.75 million usd) in a Geneva bank and were told that the banknotes were mere photocopies.

Spanish police officers found out about the scam in December 2014, when the Avignon customs warned them that they had intercepted two Spanish brothers trying to smuggle 1.7 million fake Swiss francs.

The sheikh had purportedly agreed to pay a total of 4.5 million usd for the Goya painting, entitled Portrait of don Antonio María Esquivel. The first batch of cash was to be collected in Turin, and was delivered by a middleman from the prince’s entourage. Apparently, the brothers verified the cash was legit with a machine, but the

hermanos una suma cercana a 1.700.000 francos suizos, a modo de seña y parte de pago. Los billetes eran tan falsos como el cuadro.

Las investigaciones se iniciaron en diciembre del año pasado, cuando el Servicio Aduanero de la ciudad francesa de Avignon informó a la Brigada de Patrimonio Histórico de la Comisaría General de Policía Judicial de Francia, que habían interceptado a dos españoles que viajaban con un montón de fajos de billetes suizos de mentira.

Los agentes supieron entonces que el dinero falso formaba parte de una operación de compra venta del lienzo que se iba a cerrar en cuatro millones de euros. Los dos hombres interceptados en la aduana manifestaron que se percataron del engaño cuando trataron de ingresar el efectivo en un banco de Ginebra. middleman managed to switch it before they left for Switzerland.

To add insult to injury, the brothers had also given a 350,000 usd premium to the middleman who had introduced them to the sheikh. In order to do so, they had asked a friend to lend them the money, promising to give it back the following day, with an extra 90,000 usd.

But things did not pan out as expected.

The sheikh and the middleman, carrying the 350,000 usd, have gone underground and their whereabouts are currently unknown.

Meanwhile, the fake Goya painting—which was found in one of the brothers’ houses upon their arrest—is currently being held by police.

The shambolic art swindle began back in 2003, when the brothers first agreed to buy the Goya painting for 300,000 usd, convinced it was the real deal.

They only paid a deposit of 25,000 usd, however, as the transaction was halted due to the painting’s lack of a certificate of Continues page 22

Sin embargo, se quedaron sólo con un montón de fotocopias de billetes y una imputación por delito de estafa. Además, la policía decomisó el cuadro falso.

Del jeque, o lo que fuera, no se supo más nada.

The Provincial Court thus let the brothers keep the fake and relieved them of having to pay the standing amount, 275,000 usd.

Knowing they owned a fake, they started to look for someone to sell it to, just as they had been conned themselves. Little did they know they were soon to meet their match.

Los tiempos han cambiado drásticamente, las playas se han vuelto muy valiosas y por lo tanto codiciadas, y como dice un alto cargo de la Procuraduría del Medio Ambiente: “Ahora se está peleando metro a metro la propiedad federal”.

Las remodelaciones de villas, la construcción de torres de condominios y la peculiar ampliación de restaurantes y clubs de playa, requieren de una asesoría legal sofisticada, que proteja al comprador.

Cualquiera puede solicitar una concesión; pero solo un especialista conoce a fondo la forma de prevenir problemas legales (como son invasiones, construcciones irregulares y evitar el daño ambiental) proporcionando al comprador una sólida base legal que blinde su propiedad.

El arrecife, explicó, fue muy dañado en el pasado, por gente que se dedicó a sacarlo para venderlo, así como por el calentamiento global, que afecta sobre todo al coral que nace en fondos marinos de 3 o 4 metros. En el caso de la Bahía de Jaltemba no afectó tanto porque el fondo es de entre 12 y 13 metros.

En la Bahía de Jaltemba, informó Rodríguez Bolaños, navegan diariamente unas 60 lanchas turísticas, tanto de La Peñita de Jaltemba, Rincón de Guayabitos, como de Los Ayala, que ofrecen paseos turísticos y viajes a la isla, donde hay una playa de suave arena y se puede admirar la gran cantidad y variedad de pájaros que habitan el llamado “Santuario de las Aves”.

Por otra parte, la Profepa ha implementado un sistema de vigilancia y monitoreo, a fin de no permitir más visitantes por día de los que se tienen contemplados y la carga turística disminuya, porque aunque el daño ya está hecho, lo cierto es que todavía existe una esperanza de recuperar esta maravilla natural de la Bahía de Jaltemba.

And that’s good news, since many of us live with a lingering sensation that something in our interior design is a bit “off.” Take a look around and see if you are committing one of these common interior design errors.

1) Colgar arte demasiado alto.

Take a good look at the photo above and below.

Notice how the painting and artwork is hung so that the average person, when standing, will be able to look in the center of a painting. (In galleries, that means that the center of most paintings hovers about 60 inches from the floor.) You should aim for the same in your home. It’s important that any painting work within the context of a furniture grouping. It needs to relate. For that reason, even if you are hanging a piece in a great room with very high ceilings, you should aim to hang artwork at a level that still connects with furniture. Notice how nicely these pieces relate to the furniture groupings around them.

Plants can be a beautiful thing in a home, bringing in a bit of nature indoors and acting as a natural air purifier. But people often get carried away with lots of little cuttings in jars scattered about on every free surface. The effect is one of clutter and chaos. In fact, houseplants are best used as a sculptural element. That means going larger, paring down and thinking carefully about placement.

In the room below, three carefully-placed large tree branches add a natural, balanced note that manages to bring in lots of greenery while totally working within the clean, minimalist confines of the room: In this room, one well-placed houseplant looks just like another sculptural element, picking up perfectly where African masks have left off: In this ultra tiny East Village studio, one plant manages to bring the outdoors in, dispelling any feelings of claustrophobia without taking up a lot of space.

La gente está tan aterrorizada de cometer errores de diseño que a menudo optan por la opción más fácil cuando la compra de muebles o la elección de colores de pared. Ellos van beige. O gris. El efecto es una interminable extensión de crudo en las paredes, alfombras, sofás, etc. Es soso, aburrido, y carece totalmente de personalidad. Y, por supuesto, puede ser de buen gusto, a veces, pero también es seguro que carece dinamismo.

You can paint the walls a dramatic color, or invest in an interesting patterned rug: You can throw some patterned textiles into a room, via sheets, blankets and pillows: You can opt for one colorful piece of furniture, such as this yellow couch: Or this one, complete with colorful pillows and artwork to boot.
