“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” KENNETH GRAHAME, THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS
Rail and river meet in nearby Goring Gap

Ten stylish new houses and apartments near the banks of England’s greatest river
THE AUTHOR KENNETH GRAHAME lived in Pangbourne for many years, and this area is the setting for his most famous work, The Wind in the Willows. Sitting at the confluence of the River Pang and the River Thames, it is easy to see how this charming place was his inspiration. Shepard Place is named after E H Shepard, the illustrator whose work graced the pages of the book’s most famous edition.
Many elements of river life come together here: the community clustering around the bridge, the picture-perfect Whitchurch Mill and lock, and the wide variety of boats which can be seen on the river all year round. Along with Whitchurch, its neighbour across the river, Pangbourne retains the character of a village, with plenty of local facilities and a good community feel. There are excellent eating places in and around the village. Pangbourne has remained fairly small, and as a result, new homes developments of this kind are a rare occurrence, especially in the village centre.
Whitchurch Mill and church
Pangbourne nestles in the Thames valley between The Chilterns and North Wessex Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of
opportunities to discover rolling landscapes, beech-covered hills, the Ridgeway national trail and charming villages with traditional pubs – some of which have surprising connections. Vibrant Reading is only six miles away and offers a wide range of shopping, leisure activities and nightlife. By contrast, the market town of Newbury is 15 miles from Pangbourne and has a more traditional atmosphere. Pangbourne station is only five minutes’ walk from Shepard Place. There are regular services to Reading and Paddington to the east and Didcot and Oxford to the west; Crossrail is due to reach Reading in 2019. The proximity of the village to the M4, M3 and A34 mean that north, south, east and west are all within easy reach. There are many excellent state and public schools in the area, including Pangbourne College, Bradfield College, St Andrew’s Preparatory School, Moulsford Preparatory School and The Oratory Schools. Pangbourne Primary School has an excellent reputation, with a secondary school at Theale Green.
