Abingdon-on-Thames is Britain’s oldest continuously occupied market town, being inhabited for over 6000 years. Its archaeological

remains - an Iron Age oppidum or defensive enclosure - lie invisible below the town centre, but much of its architectural heritage stands today as a proud reminder of the town’s historical status. Abingdon Bridge, Christ’s Hospital almshouses, the ‘grandest town hall in

Britain’, and Abingdon Abbey, dating from the 7th century, are all steeped in history. The town also played a part in more recent history: MG cars were built here from 1929 until 1980.

Formerly the county town of Berkshire, Abingdon has many historic traditions. Every June Morris Men dance the length of Ock Street to mark the election of the Ock Street Mayor. And on civic occasions, such as the Royal wedding of 2011, buns are thrown from the roof of County Hall to the crowds below. The Michaelmas Fair takes place every October and is the longest, narrowest street fair in Europe.

Swan Upping, a ceremonial census of swans on the Thames, visits Abingdon in July - a tradition dating from the 12th century.

The Old Gaol is an intrinsic part of the history of Abingdon and reached its bicentenary in 2011. The development of the site honours this place, both in history and in the hearts of the local community.

With a population of 30,000, Abingdon-on-Thames provides everything you need. There are many excellent schools nearby, both state and public, including the prestigious Abingdon School, Radley College and St Helen & St Katharine School. The European School, Culham is only 2 miles away. Abingdon’s leisure and tennis centre was purpose built in 2002. Market day is Monday with a Farmers’ Market every 3rd Friday of the month.

Many high-tech employers are situated in this area, including the research establishments at Diamond Light Source, Harwell, Culham and the growing Oxford University Science Parks on the outskirts of Oxford.

walk through 200 years of history As you pass through the doorways of Abingdon Old Gaol you walk in the footsteps of merchants and inmates as well as more modern families.

The Old Gaol, it’s fair to say, has had a varied past. Built by prisoners of the Napoleonic wars, the Gaol received its first ‘guests’ in 1811. In the 1970s it became a leisure centre and many an Abingdon resident will remember it with fondness as the place where they learned to swim.

Now it approaches another architectural milestone, with a further metamorphosis into a stylish riverside development. Those privileged enough to live in this local landmark will not only enjoy its spacious interior design, but also the communal riverside gardens and walks.

The former County Police Station and other listed properties on Bridge Street are also to be renovated and rejuvenated. The transformation of Twickenham House, a grade II* listed mansion, into 9 luxury apartments will complete the development and bring the Old Gaol site back to the heart of the local community.
