The hills, forests and rivers in Lawrence County offer unique adventures for all explorers.

Hoosier National Forest

With over 203,000 acres spanning across nine Indiana Counties, Hoosier National Forest offers trails, rolling hills, wildlife, fishing and much more. Hunters are welcome, but must pick up a boundary line map from the Hoosier National Forest Office prior to hunting.

Enjoy your Hoosier Lawrence County boasts 16,282 acres of National Forest; offering hiking, biking and horse trails. The Forest office and nature store is in Bedford. Spring Mill State Park - The

hilly hiking trails, playground, nature center, outdoor swimming pool, Grissom Memorial and Pioneer Village make this park the perfect escape for families and one of the most popular state parks in the Midwest. Take a step back in time in a restored 1800s settlement in the Pioneer Village. An interpretive cast of characters show and tell how each one of them helped the community thrive. There’s even a real working gristmill. Spring Mill State Park is also home to campgrounds (pg 6), the Grissom Memorial (pg 10), Spring Mill Inn (pg 24) and Millstone Dining Room (pg 27.)

Bluespring Caverns Park – Below the earth’s surface surrounded by

limestone, passengers explore the nation’s longest underground river. Cave guides navigate along the subterranean waterway pointing out native, rare blind fish. Williams Covered Bridge As the longest double-span bridge in Indiana, it celebrates the history of days gone by and welcomes today’s adventurers. It is open to bicyclists and pedestrians, and extends along the East Fork of the White River, just west of Williams off SR 450.

Pine Hall Mansion, Otis Park

Golf on one of the best municipal courses in Indiana. The 18-hole golf course in Bedford features a driving range, practice greens, lessons, golf shop and snack bar. The park is also equipped with tennis courts, picnic areas, soccer fields and a shelter house. Astronaut Heritage Lawrence County is home to three astronauts whose distinguished careers have played a major role in United States space exploration. Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom – Mitchell native and one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts in 1959. Grissom is remembered as a pioneer in American space exploration. He died with two other astronauts in a fire during a launch pad test on January 27, 1967. Charles D. Walker – Bedford native who was on several Space Shuttle missions. Kenneth D. Bowersox – Bedford High School graduate who flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia. Get a glimpse of astronaut life at one of these out-of-this-world attractions:

self-guided driving tour highlights Lawrence County’s history with Clara Barton and the American Red Cross. The organization was founded in 1881 by Barton, an American Civil War nurse, and supported by a Bedford couple who served as co-founders. Joseph and Enola Gardner lived in Lawrence County in the late 1800s. The American Red Cross Driving Tour includes historic places to visit, including the Gardners' home and farm, where Barton visited. Other stops on the tour include the Lawrence County Museum of History, the reconstructed Red Cross Log Cabin at Spring Mill State Park and American Red Cross Cemetery.
