Recap of November 2025 Session

This session featured honest and powerful stories. One participant shared rereading a 15-year-old medical file that described her as “complaining,” leaving her feeling angry and powerless. Others reflected on symptoms being dismissed, emphasizing how crucial second opinions and advocating for specific imaging were in catching cancer earlier. Many spoke about the exhaustion of constantly self-advocating and feeling talked down to, especially when accents are involved. Amid the challenges, there were hopeful moments. Some participants described supportive care teams who advocated on their behalf, showing what equitable care can look like. Facilitators Lisa and Megan-Claire shared personal experiences, and Megan-Claire suggested asking providers to record a brief recap of appointments—a helpful tip, especially if attending alone. Engagement was strong, new faces joined the conversation, and while the group acknowledged fatigue, there was a shared determination: we matter, and we deserve equitable care.

Key Takeaways

● Dismissal of symptoms is still common, and it can delay diagnosis without self-advocacy.

● Many enter appointments already on guard due to past experiences of being ignored or talked down to.

● Positive care experiences do exist and can offer a model for what all patients deserve.

● Asking providers to record a quick appointment recap can improve clarity and reduce stress.

● Despite fatigue, the group remains committed to advocating for equitable, respectful care.
