CREATING A SAFE, SENSORY SPACE for Those Affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABC of NC, a Winston-Salem non-profit founded in 2002, provides educational and occupational services for those affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. With a growing base of 350 students, and serving a 22-county radius, they needed more room for students and the ability to offer diverse experiences to help them grow.

Samet, along with Steele Group Architects and ID Collaborative, helped ABC of NC expand to serve a capacity of 600 by adding two new facilities to their campus: an activity center and a clinic.

The 26,000SF clinic houses a bright, energetic interior and serves those with autism from newborn to age 18.

As the newest source of state-of-the-art therapies and offerings on campus, the clinic was developed with rooms sponsored by the community. These rooms were

created with two purposes: to help students examine and understand everyday experiences such as the doctor, the dentist, the grocery store; and to prepare other students for occupational training. These clinic rooms were created through corporate donors and include a fully-functioning concession stand (Dewey’s), a doctor’s office (Wake Forest Baptist Health), a dentist’s office (Spangler, Rohlfing & Lambert Pediatric Dentistry), a hair salon (Great Clips), a hotel/apartment room (Daly Hotel Management), and an in-house mini grocery store with a working cashier line (Food Lion).

A motor skills room was included for sensory seekers, and was designed complete with a climbing wall, a suspended swing, and enough space for tunnels to crawl through, bikes to ride, tents to play in, and organized storage spaces.
