Poll Worker Tips:

Interacting Respectfully with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People

While working with voters at the polls, you may meet a voter whose registration record uses a name that you associate with a different gender or they provide you with documentation that lists a gender that does not match their appearance. Additionally, a person may look different from the picture on their ID. If all other legal requirements are met, and the voter is registered and provides a requisite form of ID, they are entitled to vote without further scrutiny.

DO NOT assume that a person is male or female. If you are addressing a person, and are uncertain of their pronouns, using they/them/theirs is best practice. NEVER use words such as “it” or “whatever” when referring to a person, including someone who is transgender or gender non-conforming (GNC).

1. A person’s gender identity is not relevant to whether they have presented a valid form of photo ID. We all present our genders differently. A person’s expression not seeming to “match” their ID should NEVER be the basis of denying a Missourian their right to vote.

2. While you should not need to ask for someone’s name, if necessary phrase the question as such: “What name are you registered to vote under?” DO NOT ask a transgender/ GNC person what their “real name” is.

3. If you make a pronoun mistake, acknowledge the mistake and apologize. Owning your lack of familiarity with transgender/GNC people shows respect. It also lets transgender voters know that you recognize they are exercising their right to vote and that you will try to use their correct pronouns moving forward.

4. Being transgender isn’t dependent on any particular medical procedure. It is never appropriate to inquire about surgeries or any other private details about people’s bodies.
