URBAN HEAT ISLAND ISLA DE CALOR URBANA

1.1 HOW DOES THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND WORK? 1.1 ¿CÓMO FUNCIONA LA ISLA DE CALOR URBANA?

Heat islands, or urban heat islands (UHIs), are localized areas within cities or urban areas that experience significantly higher temperatures than their surrounding rural or natural environments. They arise due to human activities, urban infrastructure, and geographical factors. Key characteristics include increased temperatures, dense urban construction, limited vegetation, and the heat-absorbing properties of surfaces like asphalt and concrete.

Mitigating UHIs is crucial for several reasons. First and foremost, they pose significant health risks. Elevated temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses and fatalities, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations.

UHIs also worsen air quality by promoting the formation of ground-level ozone and other pollutants, which harm respiratory health. Mitigation efforts can improve air quality, benefiting public health. Furthermore, UHIs impact urban resilience. As clim ate change brings more severe heatwaves, addressing UHIs becomes essential to safeguard cities and their inhabitants.

Secondly, UHIs drive up energy consumption as people rely more on air conditioning, increasing greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.

By reducing UHIs, we can enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Biodiversity suffers in UHIs due to higher temperatures and reduced green spaces. Controlling UHIs can create more favorable conditions for local flora and fauna. Mitigating UHIs can improve overall quality of life.

Las islas de calor, o islas de calor urbanas (ICU), son áreas localizadas dentro de ciudades o áreas urbanas que experimentan temperaturas significativamente más altas que sus entornos rurales o naturales circundantes. Surgen debido a actividades humanas, infraestructura urbana y factores geográficos. Las principales características incluyen temperaturas elevadas, construcción urbana densa, vegetación limitada y las propiedades de absorción de calor de superficies como el asfalto y el concreto.

Mitigar las ICU es crucial por varias razones. En primer lugar, representan riesgos significativos para la salud. Las temperaturas elevadas pueden provocar enfermedades y muertes, afectando de manera desproporcionada a poblaciones vulnerables. Las ICU empeoran la calidad del aire al promover la formación de ozono a nivel del suelo y otros contaminantes, que dañan la salud respiratoria. Los esfuerzos de mitigación pueden mejorar la calidad del aire, beneficiando la salud pública. Las ICU afectan la resiliencia urbana. A medida que el cambio climático trae olas de calor más severas, abordar las ICU se vuelve esencial para proteger a las ciudades y sus habitantes.

En segundo lugar, las ICU aumentan el consumo de energía a medida que las personas dependen más del aire acondicionado, lo que aumenta las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y los costos energéticos.

Al reducir las ICU, podemos mejorar la eficiencia energética y reducir el impacto ambiental.

1.2 CLIMATE JUSTICE 1.2 JUSTICIA CLIMÁTICA

Climate justice is a fundamental concept that addresses inequalities in the distribution of environmental and climate impacts, recognizing that the most vulnerable communities are often the most affected by the effects of climate change. The urban heat island, a phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to the accumulation of heat in buildings, pavements, and urban structures, tends to disproportionately impact low-income communities and ethnic minorities.

As noted in the report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), “increased temperatures in urban areas due to the heat island effect can exacerbate socio-economic and health inequalities, as the most vulnerable populations have fewer resources to adapt and cope with high temperatures” (UNEP, 2020).

Climate justice requires actively addressing the urban heat island through policies and strategies that reduce extreme temperatures and promote healthier and more equitable environments. As indicated in the World Bank report, “strategies to mitigate the urban heat island include increasing green spaces, promoting reflective roofs and pavements, and improving urban planning to reduce heat concentration in densely populated areas” (World Bank, 2019). By implementing measures to counteract the effect of the urban heat island, the goal is to ensure that all communities, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location, can access more livable and healthier urban environments, thus promoting greater climate and social equity.

La justicia climática es un concepto fundamental que aborda las desigualdades en la distribución de impactos ambientales y climáticos, reconociendo que las comunidades más vulnerables suelen ser las más afectadas por los efectos del cambio climático. La isla de calor urbana, un fenómeno donde las áreas urbanas experimentan temperaturas más altas que las áreas rurales circundantes debido a la acumulación de calor en edificios, pavimentos y estructuras urbanas, tiende a impactar de manera desproporcionada a las comunidades de bajos ingresos y minorías étnicas. Como señala el informe del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA), “el aumento de las temperaturas en las áreas urbanas debido a la isla de calor puede exacerbar las desigualdades socioeconómicas y de salud, ya que las poblaciones más vulnerables tienen menos recursos para adaptarse y enfrentar las altas temperaturas” (PNUMA, 2020).

La justicia climática requiere abordar activamente la isla de calor urbana mediante políticas y estrategias que reduzcan las temperaturas extremas y promuevan entornos más saludables y equitativos. Como indica el informe del Banco Mundial, “las estrategias para mitigar la isla de calor urbana incluyen aumentar las áreas verdes, promover techos y pavimentos reflectantes, y mejorar la planificación urbana para reducir la concentración de calor en áreas densamente pobladas” (Banco Mundial, 2019). A través de la implementación de medidas que contrarresten el efecto de la isla de calor, busca garantizar que todas las comunidades, sin importar su estatus socioeconómico o ubicación geográfica, puedan acceder a entornos urbanos más habitables y saludables, promoviendo la equidad climática y social.

1.3 VULNERABLE GROUPS 1.3 GRUPOS VULNERABLES

UHIs can disproportionately affect certain vulnerable groups in society, including low-income people due to lack of access to air conditioning and green spaces, which exposes them to extremely high temperatures; elderly people are more susceptible to extreme heat due to changes in their ability to regulate body temperature and chronic medical conditions; children and infants are more sensitive to heat and have difficulty regulating their body temperature; animals, mostly those without a home or access to fresh water; and flora.

It is important to take action to protect these vulnerable groups during heat waves, such as providing shelter, distributing drinking water, and conducting awareness campaigns about the risks of extreme heat.

Las ICU pueden afectar de manera desproporcionada a ciertos grupos vulnerables en la sociedad, incluyendo personas de bajos ingresos por la falta de acceso a aire acondicionado y espacios verdes, lo que los expone a temperaturas extremadamente altas; personas mayores son más susceptibles al calor extremo debido a cambios en su capacidad para regular la temperatura corporal y afecciones médicas crónicas; niños y bebés son más sensibles al calor y tienen dificultades para regular su temperatura corporal, animales, mayormente aquellos que no tienen un hogar ni acceso al agua fresca al igual que la flora.

1.4 STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE UHI

1.4 ESTRATEGIAS PARA MITIGAR LA UHI To mitigate the urban heat island, various strategies are implemented to reduce the temperature in urban environments and minimize the effects of heat. Strategies to mitigate the urban heat island not only address environmental aspects, but also have significant social, economic and political implications:

1.5 IMPROVEMENT OF THERMAL COMFORT AND PROMOTION OF BIODIVERSITY 1.5 MEJORA DEL CONFORT TÉRMICO Y FOMENTO DE LA BIODIVERSIDAD

“A first measure is to protect green spaces and increase both their frequency in urban areas and the density of trees”, Dr. Pomponi told BBC World (2019).

One of the great universal strategies is the implementation of green spaces, where trees play a great role as they are responsible for reducing between 8° to 10° C. The WHO (Wold Helath Organization) has assured that at least one tree for every three habitants is needed to breathe better air in cities and a minimum of 10 to 15 square meters of green space per habitant. In addition, the change of material adds to this temperature reduction, since the result of large extensions of asphalt is reflected in microclimates that reach more than 40°C due to low reflectivity, its almost null water uptake and permeability.

“Una primera medida es proteger los espacios verdes y aumentarlos tanto en su frecuencia en áreas urbanas como en la densidad de árboles”, señaló a BBC Mundo el Dr. Pomponi (2019). Una de las grandes estrategias universales es la implementación de espacios verdes, donde los árboles juegan un gran papel al ser los responsables de reducir entre 8° a 10° C. La OMS (Organización Mundial de la Salud) ha asegurado que se necesita, al menos, un árbol por cada tres habitantes para respirar un mejor aire en las ciudades y un mínimo de entre 10 y 15 metros cuadrados de zona verde por habitante. Además, el cambio de material se suma a esta reducción de temperatura, ya que el resultado de las grandes extensiones de asfalto se refleja en microclimas que alcanzan más de 40°C por la baja reflectividad, su casi nula captación de agua y permeabilidad.

1.6 WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO GREEN AREAS OVER THE YEARS?

1.6 ¿QUÉ LE HA PASADO A LAS ÁREAS VERDES A LO LARGO DE LOS AÑOS?

As Sustainable Resilient Cities (2021) mentions, “large cities over the years have had a great loss of green areas, this due to the development of settlements, infrastructure, furniture and urban equipment has caused that wooded and green areas are reduced to residual spaces.”

According to a study conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) (2018), which analyzes more than 1,000 cities in 31 European countries, concludes that between all of them they could avoid up to 43,000 premature deaths each year if they comply with the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) in terms of residential proximity to green spaces.

Based on the available scientific evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests widespread access to green areas and sets the goal of having a green space of at least 0.5 hectares at a distance of no more than 300 meters in a straight line from each household.

The research team collected information on natural cause mortality and green space levels in each city studied for 2015. Then, through a quantitative health impact analysis and using data on the association between green areas and mortality from previous meta-analyses, they estimated the number of deaths from natural causes that could be prevented if each city complied with the WHO recommendation.

Como menciona Ciudades Sostenibles Resilientes (2021), “las grandes ciudades con el paso de los años han tenido una gran perdida de áreas verdes, esto debido a el desarrollo de los asentamientos, la infraestructura, el mobiliario y el equipamiento urbano ha provocado que las áreas arboladas y verdes se reduzcan a espacios residuales.”

De acuerdo a un estudio realizado Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal) (2018), la cual analiza más de 1.000 ciudades de 31 países europeos, concluye que entre todas ellas podrían evitar hasta casi 43.000 muertes prematuras cada año si cumpliesen con la recomendación de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) en cuanto a proximidad residencial a espacios verdes.

Con base en las pruebas científicas disponibles, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) sugiere el acceso generalizado a áreas verdes y establece la meta de contar con un espacio verde de al menos 0.5 hectáreas a una distancia no superior a 300 metros en línea recta desde cada hogar.

El equipo de investigación recopiló información sobre la mortalidad por causas naturales y los niveles de áreas verdes en cada ciudad estudiada para el año 2015. Luego, mediante un análisis cuantitativo del impacto en la salud y utilizando datos de asociación entre áreas verdes y mortalidad provenientes de metaanálisis previos, estimó la cantidad de muertes por causas naturales que podrían prevenirse si cada ciudad cumpliera con la recomendación de la OMS.

Querétaro de Arteaga, commonly known as Querétaro, is one of Mexico’s 32 states and its capital city bears the same name, Querétaro. Santiago de Querétaro is the largest city and is recognized for its history, cultural heritage, industrial development and economic growth. Santiago de Querétaro is located in the southwest of the state of Querétaro.

Querétaro has suffered an accelerated urbanization. Population growth in Querétaro has been a remarkable phenomenon in recent years, driven by its economic development and attraction as a destination for investment and employment. However, this growth has also presented challenges in terms of urban planning and the need to ensure a balance between development and the preservation of the natural environment and the quality of life of its habitants. In 1984 Querétaro had a population of 739,605 inhabitants, according to INEGI (2023). Today, Querétaro is experiencing population and urban growth in the outskirts of the city; in 2020, the population will exceed 2,368,400 habitants.

Santiago de Querétaro es la ciudad más grande y es reconocida por su historia, patrimonio cultural, desarrollo industrial y crecimiento económico. Santiago de Querétaro se encuentra al suroeste del estado de Querétaro.

Querétaro ha sufrido una acelerada urbanización. El crecimiento poblacional en Querétaro ha sido un fenómeno notable en los últimos años, impulsado por su desarrollo económico y atracción como destino para la inversión y el empleo. 2.2 HOW UHI AFFECTS IN QUERÉTARO? 2.2 ¿CÓMO AFECTA UHI EN QUERÉTARO?

In Querétaro, the urban heat island effect causes higher temperatures in urban areas due to the concentration of buildings and pavement. This can increase energy demand, affect air quality, represent a health risk and have negative impacts on vegetation. It is important to take mitigation measures, such as increasing vegetation, promoting green roofs, implementing sustainable urban planning policies, and raising public awareness on how to protect themselves from extreme heat. This is especially relevant in the context of climate change, where extreme temperatures are expected to become more frequent.

Some of the strategies and measures that have been implemented or are being considered in Querétaro and other urban areas to address the heat island effect include increasing green areas, promoting green roofs, sustainable regulation construction, urban planning, water management systems, and air quality monitoring.

En el estado de Querétaro, el efecto isla de calor urbano provoca temperaturas más altas en áreas urbanas debido a la concentración de edificios y pavimento. Esto puede aumentar la demanda de energía, afectar la calidad del aire, representar un riesgo para la salud y tener impactos negativos en la vegetación. Es importante tomar medidas de mitigación, como aumentar la vegetación, promover techos verdes, implementar políticas de planificación urbana sostenible y concientizar a la población sobre cómo protegerse del calor extremo. Esto es especialmente relevante en el contexto del cambio climático, donde se espera que las temperaturas extremas sean más frecuentes.

03 TEC DISTRICT DISTRITO TEC

3.1 TEC DISTRIC 3.1 DISTRITO TEC

The Tec District is an imaginary delimited area where we take the Tec Queretaro Campus as the center and extends 1km around. Being an area mainly populated by students and related businesses, plus the direct relationship with local family housing, the variety of elements and activities within the area are extensive and the contrast that exists between the Tec community and the Tec District gives us a very broad picture of how the UHI affects in different ways having access or not to green areas, walking or driving and how radiation impacts depending on the activities performed by the population on a daily basis.

The Tec District is a point in the city where multiple activities converge in such a small space. From industry to housing, historic center, health services, input, education, and other services. One of the main and most important avenues in the city of Queretaro, Boulevard Bernardo Quintana, is located here. It is an area full of possibilities and desires to be developed to benefit not only the users of the Tec district, but also the entire city of Queretaro.

However, there has been an unplanned growth that affects the functioning and health of the population. Different socioeconomic and urban aspects are found in the different industrial and commercial areas, residential areas, health services, inputs and education, therefore, having all of the above in such a small area shows that there was no planning in its development.

El Distrito Tec es un área delimitada imaginaria donde tomamos el Tec Campus Querétaro como el centro y se extiende a 1km a la redonda. Al ser un área principalmente poblada por estudiantes y negocios afines a ellos, más la directa relación con vivienda de familias locales, la variedad de elementos y actividades dentro de la zona son extensos y el contraste que existe entre la comunidad Tec y el Distrito Tec nos da un panorama muy amplio de como la ICU afecta de distintas maneras teniendo acceso o no a las áreas verdes, transportándose de pie o en automóvil y como la radiación impacta dependiendo de las actividades que realiza la población cotidianamente.

El Distrito Tec es un punto en la ciudad donde convergen múltiples actividades en tan poco espacio. Desde la industria hasta la vivienda, centro histórico, servicios de salud, insumo, educación, y otros servicios.

Se encuentra una de las avenidas principales y de mayor importancia en la Ciudad de Querétaro, Boulevard Bernardo Quintana. Es un área llena de posibilidades y deseos por desarrollar para favorecer no solo a los usuarios del distrito Tec, sino, a toda la ciudad de Querétaro.

Sin embargo, hubo un crecimiento sin planeación que afecta el funcionamiento y salud de la población. Se encuentran diferentes aspectos socioeconómicos y urbanos en las diferentes áreas industriales, comerciales, zonas residenciales, servicios de salud, insumo y educación, por ende, al tener todo lo anterior en un área tan reducida demuestra que no hubo planeación en su desarrollo.

The map illustrates the correlation between large areas lacking permeability, such as parking lots and wide roads, and high temperatures.

In addition, the relationship between areas with permeability, such as large bodies of water, and lower temperatures is verified. These relationships are evident in places such as the lake of Queretaro 2000 park and the pasture of the Jumex factory. Surprisingly, lower temperatures were observed on the rooftops of the Soriana Hyper Quintana and Walmart stores. This map provides valuable information on how land cover influences surface temperatures in Queretaro.

El mapa ilustra la correlación existente entre áreas extensas que carecen de permeabilidad, como estacionamientos y amplias vialidades, y temperaturas elevadas. Además, se verifica la relación entre áreas con permeabilidad, como cuerpos de agua extensos, y temperaturas más bajas.

Estas relaciones se evidencian en lugares como el lago del parque Querétaro 2000 y el pastizal de la fábrica de Jumex. De manera sorprendente, se observaron temperaturas más bajas en las cubiertas de los establecimientos de Soriana Hyper Quintana y Walmart. Este mapa proporciona información valiosa sobre cómo la cobertura del suelo influye en las temperaturas superficiales en Querétaro.

Zone 1 in the northwest of the Tec District is a hub for commerce, transit, and public spaces. It features permeable public and private green areas like Parque 2000, offering possibilities for local flora and fauna. The topography facilitates rainwater capture, especially along Bernardo Quintana and Walmart/Sam’s car park. Empty lots and water channels help regulate temperatures and water flow, countering heat concentrations caused by asphalt and human activities. Walmart’s area, with its reflective roof, presents opportunities to enhance ecosystemic support against urban heat islands.

La Zona 1, ubicada en el noroeste del Distrito Tec, es un centro de comercio, tránsito y espacios públicos. Presenta áreas verdes públicas y privadas permeables, como el Parque 2000, que ofrecen posibilidades para la flora y fauna local. La topografía facilita la captura de agua de lluvia, especialmente a lo largo de Bernardo Quintana y el estacionamiento de Walmart/Sam’s. Los vacíos y canales de agua ayudan a regular las temperaturas y el flujo de agua, contrarrestando las concentraciones de calor causadas por el asfalto y las actividades humanas. El área de Walmart, con su techo reflectante, ofrece oportunidades para mejorar el soporte ecosistémico contra las islas de calor urbanas.

04 THE SITE EL SITIO

4.1 ON-SITE SURFACE TEMPERATURES

4.1 TEMPERATURAS SUPERFICIALES EN EL SITIO

In the selected site, the heat map shows that it is one of the areas with the highest heat absorption and reflectance, being this the parking lot of Sam’s Club and Walmart (U.S. retail chains that operate internationally and are part of the same corporation, Walmart Inc.) There´s a temperature contrast observed on the roof of Walmart compared to other surfaces. This is due to the fact that the parking lots are one of the main factors of the Urban Heat Island phenomenon due to the large paved surfaces; also within the site there is a lack of vegetation, there is no permeability and the high density of surrounding buildings impact the heat that is generated, as well as the main concrete avenue being Bernardo Quintana.

Therefore, mitigating this heat stain would result in a benefit for the population.

En el predio seleccionado, el mapa de calor muestra que es una de las áreas con mayor absorción y reflectancia de calor, siendo este el estacionamiento de Sam’s Club y Walmart (cadenas de tiendas minoristas estadounidenses que operan a nivel internacional y son parte de la misma corporación, Walmart Inc.) Se observa un contraste de temperatura en la techumbre de Walmart contra las demás superficies. Esto debido a que los estacionamientos son uno de los principales factores del fenómeno de la Isla de Calor Urbana por las grandes superficies pavimentadas; Además dentro del sitio falta de vegetación, no hay permeabilidad y las altas densidades de edificaciones que se encuentran alrededor impactan en el calor que se genera, así como la avenida principal de concreto siendo Bernardo Quintana.

Por lo que el mitigar esta mancha de calor resultaria en un beneficio para la población.

The distribution of temperature in the urban area is influenced by the solar radiation absorbed by the materials that compose it. The thermophysical properties of these materials often have a greater impact on cities.

INENCO (2003) mentions that the amount of horizontal surface exposed to solar radiation, along with the high absorption properties and thermal capacity of the materials used, exerts a significant influence on the magnitude of the urban heat island effect and the thermal loads experienced by buildings during the summer, especially in areas with dry climates and high levels of solar radiation. According to INEGI (2023), 51% of the surface area of the state of Querétaro has a dry and semi-dry climate, primarily located in the central region.

Within this context, asphalt pavements typically have high absorptivity and thermal capacity, and this significantly contributes to the urban heat island effect.

Pavement is responsible for nearly 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, much of which is dedicated to providing parking, according to Expok (2023). Furthermore, all that pavement contributes to the loss of wetlands, forests, and other green spaces, a process that can release carbon into the atmosphere and reduce biodiversity.

The environmental and social impact of parking lots is an important issue to consider. “According to the author of ‘How Parking Explains the World,’ the pathological obsession with car storage has exacerbated some of our most pressing problems, from housing affordability to the accelerating global climate disaster.” (Expok News 2023).

There are too many parking lots in the world, which could generate conflicts in terms of urban landscapes. Today, so much land is paved that it changes the way cities interact with rain, heat, and wildlife.

Using public transportation, walking, or cycling has become difficult or dangerous, which has given priority to cars. The way cities address parking has massive consequences on how we travel, how our cities look, and where and how we build housing, as mentioned by Urban Planning Professor Manville.

La distribución de la temperatura en el área urbana está influenciada la radiación solar absorbida por los materiales que la componen. Las propiedades termo físicas de los materiales, suelen tener un mayor impacto en las ciudades.

INENCO (2003) menciona que la cantidad de superficie horizontal que está expuesta a la radiación solar, junto con las altas propiedades de absorción y capacidad térmica de los materiales utilizados, ejerce una influencia importante en la magnitud de la isla de calor urbana y en las cargas térmicas que experimentan los edificios durante el verano, especialmente en áreas con climas secos y niveles elevados de radiación solar. De acuerdo a INEGI (2023) el 51% de la superficie del estado de Querétaro presenta clima seco y semiseco localizado en la región centro.

Dentro de este contexto los pavimentos de asfalto en la mayoría de los casos poseen alta absortividad y elevada capacidad térmica, y esto contribuye de manera significativa al efecto de isla de calor urbana.

El pavimento es responsable de casi el 10 % de las emisiones globales de gases de efecto invernadero, gran parte de las cuales se destina a la provisión de estacionamiento de acuerdo a Expok (2023). Además, todo el pavimento contribuye a la pérdida de humedales, bosques y otros espacios verdes, un proceso que puede liberar carbono a la atmósfera y reducir la biodiversidad.

El impacto ambiental y social de los estacionamientos es un tema importante a considerar. “Según el autor de «How Parking Explains the World», la obsesión patológica por el almacenamiento de automóviles ha exacerbado algunos de nuestros problemas más apremiantes, desde la asequibilidad de la vivienda hasta el acelerado desastre climático global.”

(Expok News 2023).

Hay demasiados estacionamientos en el mundo y esto podría generar conflictos en términos de un paisaje urbano.

Hoy en día se pavimenta tanta tierra que eso cambia la forma en que las ciudades interactúan con la lluvia, el calor y la vida silvestre.

Es difícil o peligroso usar el transporte público, caminar o andar en bicicleta lo cual ha causado prioridad a los automóviles. La forma en que las ciudades abordan el estacionamiento tiene consecuencias masivas en la forma en que viajamos, cómo se ven nuestras ciudades y cómo y dónde construimos viviendas”, menciona el Catedrático de Urbanismo, Michael Manville.

4.3 SITE ANALYSIS

4.3 ANÁLISIS DE SITIO

Within the site we find not only buying and selling activities of large chains, but also local commerce and various activities such as car shows, meeting points, sale of handicrafts bazaars, nurseries, freight rental, etc.

It is one of the most profitable properties due to its proximity to Bernardo Quintana Blvd., Queretaro 2000 Park, the Tecnologico de Monterrey and the numerous homes and local businesses. The contrast with the neighborhood and urban, generates this dynamic between activities so that it is not only a parking lot, but the people who inhabit it generate landmarks within the site giving it a greater value.

The null design of pedestrian circulation and the great sun exposure is the main problem to be addressed along with the lack of security in low traffic areas, flood zones, vehicular traffic without prioritizing pedestrians, stores in the surroundings and the lack of permeability.

Finally, we have 90,490m² of land of which 32,960m² are for parking.

Dentro del sitio no solo encontramos actividades de compra y venta de grandes cadenas, sino también de comercio local y diversas actividades como exposición de coches, puntos de reunión, venta de bazares de artesanías, viveros, renta de fletes, etc.

Es uno de los predios más rentables por la cercanía con el Blvd. Bernardo Quintana, el Parque Querétaro 2000, el Tecnológico de Monterrey y las numerosas viviendas y comercios locales. El contraste con lo barrial y urbano, genera esta dinámica entre actividades por lo que no sólo es un estacionamiento, sino que la gente que lo habita genera hitos dentro del sitio dandole un mayor valor.

El nulo diseño de circulación peatonal y la gran exposición solar es la principal problemática a tratar junto con la falta de seguridad en zonas poco transitadas, las zonas de inundación, el transito vehicular sin la priorización del peatón, los comercios a los alrededores y la falta de permeabilidad.

Finalmente, contamos con 90,490m² de predio de los cuales 32,960 son de estacionamiento.

4.5 USUARIOS For this we identified the users that we will be helping and benefiting by being the ones who occupy the site. Impacting mainly with young people, families, itinerant sellers, employees, inhabitants of the Tec District as students and teachers, as well as the existing vegetation and fauna.

This with the purpose of establishing a space for the interaction and coexistence of users and species that are affected by the heat island in their daily lives within the site and surroundings.

Para esto identificamos los usuarios a los cuales estaremos ayudando y beneficiando al ser los que ocupan el sitio. Impactando principalmente con jóvenes, familias, vendedores ambulantes, empleados, habitantes del Distrito Tec como estudiantes y profesores, así como la vegetación y fauna existente.

Esto con la finalidad de establecer un espacio para la conviviencia y coexistencia de usuarios y especies que se ven afectados por la Isla de Calor en su día a día dentro del sitio y al rededores.

4.6 ON-SITE MATERIAL SURFACE TEMPERATURES

4.6 TEMPERATURAS SUPERFICIALES DE MATERIALES EN EL SITIO

During this site analysis of the parking lot area, a specific temperature survey was also conducted on the various surfaces identified: concrete, asphalt and soil. This study focused on better understanding how these materials react to environmental temperature variations and how such fluctuations could influence their thermal behavior. In addition, the possible implications of these thermal variations on the surrounding environment and efficient site management were evaluated, considering aspects such as heat retention, solar reflectivity and contribution to the urban heat island phenomenon. The data collected will serve as a basis for understanding the thermal impact of each surface and will help in the formulation of more sustainable and efficient strategies for the future design and management of the parking area.

Durante este análisis de sitio del área del estacionamiento, también se llevó a cabo un estudio específico de toma de temperaturas en las diversas superficies identificadas: concreto, asfalto y tierra. Este estudio se centró en comprender mejor cómo estos materiales reaccionan ante las variaciones de temperatura ambiental y cómo dichas fluctuaciones podrían influir en su comportamiento térmico. Además, se evaluaron las posibles implicaciones de estas variaciones térmicas en el entorno circundante y en la gestión eficiente del sitio, considerando aspectos como la retención de calor, la reflectividad solar y la contribución al fenómeno de isla de calor urbano. Los datos recopilados servirán como base para entender el impacto térmico de cada superficie y ayudarán en la formulación de estrategias más sostenibles y eficaces para el diseño y la gestión futura del área del estacionamiento.

With the different activities found within the site, the question begins to arise about the impact that our strategies will cause beyond the climatic and spatial.

Jan Gehl in his book “Cities for People” (2014), mentions that the better urban spaces exist, the higher the quality of life of people and much of this lies in how they live, the use and meaning they give to spaces. Likewise, in the author’s book, UN-Habitat (2010), promotes a new idea of the urban approach, where priority is given to a people-oriented city that gives rise to an increase in the amount of creative spaces where social interaction and equity can develop.

Transforming the space into a walkable zone with proximity to vegetation, wooded areas, and coexistence zones goes hand in hand with preserving social dynamics, since life takes place on foot, as all the events of our lives happen to us while we are in circulation.

Providing safe, livable and dignified spaces is one of our design premises for consumers, passersby and vulnerable groups such as street vendors and those working in informal jobs. Generating connectivity between spaces and activities through pathways transforms established dynamics and converges them into one where coexistence is reflected in both social groups and trading systems.

Con las distintas actividades encontradas dentro del predio, comienza a surgir la pregunta sobre el impacto que nuestras estrategias causarán más allá de lo climático y espacial.

Jan Gehl en su libro “Ciudades para la Gente” (2014), menciona que mientras mejores espacios urbanos existan mayor será la calidad de vida de las personas y gran parte de esto reside en cómo viven, el uso y significado que le dan a los espacios. Así mismo en el libro del autor, la ONU-Hábitat (2010), promueve una nueva idea del planteamiento urbano, donde se prioriza una ciudad orientada hacia las personas que da lugar a un aumento de la cantidad de espacios creativos donde puede desarrollarse la interacción y equidad social.

El transformar el espacio en una zona caminable con cercanía a la vegetación, áreas arboladas y zonas de convivencia van de la mano con preservar las dinámicas sociales ya que la vida se desarrolla de pie pues todos los sucesos de nuestras vidas nos ocurren mientras estamos en circulación.

Brindar espacios seguros, habitables y dignos es una de nuestras premisas de diseño para los consumidores, transeúntes y grupos vulnerables como vendedores ambulantes y aquellos de trabajos informales. Generar una conectividad entre espacios y actividades mediante senderos transforma las dinámicas establecidas y lo converge un una sola donde la coexistencia se ve reflejada tanto en grupos sociales como en sistemas de comercio.

To start with the ideation we start with the exploration of analogous examples that are related to what we are looking for. We show those that are most related to our project, relating the characteristics of each one with which we decided to relate and develop with our vision and are developed within our program.

Within our first approaches for the design of our proposal we found several solutions and mistakes, because at the beginning we were still designing for the car and we were afraid to change the space so much, but once we analyzed our research question again and made the necessary decisions to fulfill what we wanted plus the visualization of a future for the proyect, we started with the creation of a more solid proposal and that responded in a better way to our problems.

Para comenzar con la ideación partimos de la exploración de ejemplos análogos que estén relacionados a lo que buscamos. Mostramos los que tienen mayor relación con nuestro proyecto, relacionando las características de cada uno con las cuales decidimos relacionarnos y desarrollar con nuestra visión y están desarrolladas dentro de nuestro programa.

Dentro de nuestros primeros acercamientos para el diseño de nuestra propuesta encontramos varias soluciones y errores, pues al principio seguíamos diseñando para el automóvil y teníamos miedo a cambiar tanto el espacio, pero una vez que analizamos nuestra pregunta de investigación nuevamente y tomamos la decisiones necesarias para cumplir con lo que deseamos más la visualización de un futuro para el proyecto, comenzamos con la creación de una propuesta más sólida y que respondía de mejor manera nuestras problemátcias.

Las premisas que rigen este proyecto tienen enfoque en lo natural, con espacios permeables, sistemas regenerativos, coexistentes, caminables y sostenibles siendo cruciales en la conservación ambiental ya que estos diseños ayudan a preservar la biodiversidad, los recursos naturales y los ecosistemas, contribuyendo a la conservación del medio ambiente.

They generate resilience and adaptation by improving the resilience of the built environment by making it more resistant to natural disasters and climate change, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project. Improving the quality of life, as they promote healthy and aesthetically pleasing spaces, improving people’s quality of life by providing clean air, pure water, and areas for recreation and relaxation. The energy efficiency, water management and waste reduction associated with these designs can lead to significant long-term savings for both homeowners and the community at large.

The architectural program is designed to complement each other and promote an immersion with the space and its activities, generating a variety of spaces that create different types of relationships between users. These spaces are hierarchical and delimited by the color of the esplanades as well as the paths where their width and color help to identify their hierarchy.

El programa arquitectónico esta pensado para que se complemente entre si y que promuevan una inmersión con el espacio y en sus actividades, generando una variedad de espacios que entre si crean distintos tipos de relaciones entre los usuarios. Estos espacios están jerarquizados y delimitados por el color de las explanadas así como los senderos donde el ancho y color de los mismos ayuda a identificar su jerarquía.

For the building we reused the existing structure adding a reinforcement for the green roof cover for heat reduction and rainwater collection.

Within this building we propose to divide it into two sections, multipurpose sports and local commerce; Retractable bleachers are placed to perform different activities beyond sports, so that when moved or removed the dimensions and dynamics of the space change. Similarly, dividing panels were placed between the two spaces so that in the event of simultaneous activities, they can be carried out normally without intervention from the other.

The building only retains the left wall for protection and delimitation of housing while the remaining walls are removed to create a visual permeability and have greater control of what happens inside and outside the building.

Para el edifico reutilizamos la estructura existente agregando un reforzamiento para la cubierta del techo verde para la disminución del calor y captación pluvial.

Dentro de este edificio se propone dividir en dos secciones, deportiva multiusos y de comercio local; Colocar gradas retractiles para realizar distintas actividades más alla de las deportivas, por lo que al moverse o retirarse las dimensiones y dinámicas del espacio cambian. De igual forma se colocaron paneles divisorios entre ambos espacios para que de tener actividades simultaneas estas puedan trasncurrir con normalidad sin intervención de la otra.

La edificación sólo conserva el muro izquierdo para protección y delimitación de vivienda mientras que los muros restantes son retirados para crear una permeabilidad visual y tener mayor control de lo que ocurre dentro y fuera del edificio.

Our main walkway is the biggest change of circulation that is made, since we eliminate the vehicular circuit and turn it into an entire walkway that crosses the site from end to end, going from the neighborhood to the urban or vice versa, all this being only for preferential pedestrian and cyclist use.

We maintain the width of the existing street, we groove the ends to introduce vegetation and create a green and pleasant walkway, along with urban furniture for the appreciation and stay of the user towards the space.

We also created this great contrast of before and after, since the car does not stay in the wider lanes and the pedestrian has nowhere to walk, now the pedestrian has much more space to move and be than the car.

Nuestro andador principal es el gran cambio de circulación que se realiza, ya que eliminamos ese circuito vehicular y lo convertimos en todo un andador que cruca de extremo a extremo el sitio pasando de lo barrial a lo urbano o viceversa, todo esto siendo sólo para uso preferencial peatonal y del ciclista.

Mantenemos el ancho de la calle existente, ranuramos extremos para introducir vegetación y crear todo un camellón vegetal y agradable al andar, junto con mobiliario urbano para la apreciación y estancia del usuario hacia el espacio.

Además creamos este gran contraste del antes y después, ya que el automóvil no permanece en los carriles más anchos y el peatón no tiene donde caminar, ahora el peatón tiene mucho más espacio para transitar y estar que el automóvil.

In the search for a materiality that would allow us to indicate the change of spaces, 3 pavers were proposed, which only change color while maintaining the same shape throughout the proposal. Among other materials we have also acker stone wich merges both natural aspects with the paths that are found within the proposal. Finally the rope as an element which will have the function of composing permeable walls, as we want the spaces are modulated without the need for a visual blockage in between, likewise the vegetation of the project we contemplate it as a material as it helps us to integrate each of the materials mentioned.

The existing vegetation that we can find within the property currently consists of a wide variety, we can find trees such as mesquite which reaches a considerable height and provides inconsistent shade throughout the day due to the shape of its top, as for the pirul is a smaller tree but its shade is more effective. Ornamental plants are the bugambillia and daisy, which also have aromatic properties, the shape of the bushes of these species lends itself to the modulation of spaces as it is similar to a shrub. The cica also known as false palm tree is in very specific locations within the property, due to the morphology of its leaves its shade can be very inconsistent making it unfriendly to pedestrians passing by. Finally, the cardon is used for ornamental purposes since its maintenance requires very little water, and its morphology lends itself to both modulation and ornamentation.

La vegetación existente que podemos encontrar dentro del predio actualmente consta de una amplia variedad, podemos encontrar arboles como el mezquite el cual llega a tener una altura considerable y proporciona sombra inconsistente a lo largo del día debido a la forma de su copa, en cuanto al pirul es un árbol de menor tamaño pero su sombra es más eficaz.

De plantas ornamentales encontramos la bugambillia y la margarita, las cuales también poseen propiedades aromaticas, la forma de los arbustos de dichas especies se presta para la modulación de espacios ya que es similar es a un arbusto. La cica tambien conocida como falsa palmera esta en ubicaciónes muy especificas dentro del predio, debido a la morfología de sus hojas su sombra puede ser muy inconsistente haciendola poco amigable para los peatones que van de paso. Finalmente el cardón se usa de manera ornamental ya que su mantenimiento requiere de my poca agua, así mismo su morfología se presta tanto como para modulación como ornamental.

The vegetation proposal seeks a coexistence between the species found within the tec district, both flora and fauna, as well as to attract new species that can adapt to the design of our proposal such as pollinators, which would help the proliferation of vegetation. Among these we hope to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, beetles, bees, etc.

Con la propuesta de vegetación se busca una co existencia entre las especies que se encuentran dentro del distrito tec tanto de flora como fauna, de igual manera se busca atraer nuevas especies que puedan adaptarse al diseño de nuestra propuesta tales como polinizadores, los cuales ayudarían a la proliferación de la vegetación. Entre estos se espera atraer colibries, mariposas, escarabajos, abejas, etc.

The proposed vegetation palette consists of two trees which due to their height and canopy size provide constant shade within the project, the ash, ficus, mesquite and huizache lend themselves to the urbanization of the spaces due to these characteristics. For ornamentals we have agave, garambullo, cat’s tail, fescue, cardon, lavada, daisies and succulents, etc, of which some of these are aromatic, the others are used for the decoration of green areas and planters of the project. All the species of our palette require little water due to the arid climate of Querétaro, in this way their presentation will be the most optimal throughout the months since they will hardly dry out.

In order to prioritize the pedestrian, parking spaces are reduced to 60% and redirect vehicular traffic to a single sector by delimiting spaces. The vehicular zone is directly related to supermarkets and businesses such as restaurants within the site.

They offer a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to address urban stormwater issues by preventing flooding, improving water quality and recharging local aquifers, contributing to the creation of more resilient urban environments.

This in conjunction with the integration of filtered water storage cisterns for irrigation systems.

Los jardines de lluvia han surgido como una solución innovadora para la filtración y captación de agua pluvial. Ofrecen una alternativa sostenible y estéticamente agradable para abordar las problemáticas con las aguas pluviales urbanas al prevenir inundaciones, mejorar la calidad del agua y recargar acuíferos locales, contribuyen a la creación de entornos urbanos más resilientes.

To counteract the effects of the UHI, the implementation of green roofs emerges as an effective and attractive strategy, especially for urban commercial environments such as restaurants, supermarkets and other retail outlets. These roofs offer natural thermal insulation, reducing ambient temperatures, improve air quality and provide green spaces to enhance the customer and employee experience. The adoption of green roofs not only contributes to the mitigation of the urban heat island, but also highlights the importance of sustainability in the business sector.

Para contrarrestar los efectos del ICU, la implementación de techos verdes emerge como una estrategia eficaz y atractiva, especialmente para entornos comerciales urbanos como restaurantes, supermercados y otros comercios.

Estos techos ofrecen un aislamiento térmico natural, reduciendo la temperatura ambiente, mejoran la calidad del aire y proporciona espacios verdes para mejorar la experiencia de clientes y empleados. La adopción de techos verdes no solo contribuye a la mitigación de la isla de calor urbana, sino que también resalta la importancia de la sostenibilidad en el sector empresarial.

Pergola Pergola

The pergolas implemented in the social gathering areas were designed based on biomimicry, which is the imitation of nature, in this case, of trees.

The pergolas serve to provide shade through a membrane of intertwined ropes on the structure. They are located in the larger esplanades, and thus generate spaces of permanence where a greater concentration of people is expected due to activities such as food trucks and local commerce.

It is important to generate these shaded areas to homogenize the space, avoiding visual disruption or contamination. A single support point was sought to maintain visual permeability and prevent disruption of the intended spatial experience, which is crucial to counteract the hazards of the area.

Las pérgolas implementadas en las áreas de encuentro social se diseñarón a partir de la biomimética, siendo esta la imitación de la naturaleza, en este caso de los árboles.

Las pérgolas sirven para otorgar sombra mediante una membrana de cuerda entrelazada en la estructura. Se ubican en las explanadas más grandes y así se logra generar espacios de permanencia dónde se espera mayor concentración de personas por actividades como lo es en las áreas de foodtrucks y comercio local. Es importante generar estas sombras, homogenizar el espacio para no romper y/o contaminar visualmente. Se buscó que tuviera un solo punto de apoyo para que estos no rompieran con la permeabilidad visual del espacio que es lo que se busca otorgar al espacio para contrarrestar los peligros de la zona.

The application of ecosystem services in a project is crucial to mitigate the urban heat island. Trees and vegetation act as natural coolants, providing shade and reducing local temperatures through transpiration. In addition, the preservation and restoration of green spaces and wetlands help absorb excess rainwater, preventing flooding and reducing stress on urban drainage systems. Vegetation also helps improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, which is critical for public health in densely populated urban areas. Integrating these ecosystem services into a project’s design not only creates more pleasant and healthy environments for residents, but also contributes significantly to heat island mitigation, thus promoting more sustainable and livable cities for all.

La aplicación de servicios ecosistémicos en un proyecto es crucial para mitigar la isla de calor urbana. Los árboles y vegetación actúan como refrigerantes naturales, proporcionando sombra y reduciendo las temperaturas locales a través de la transpiración. Además, la preservación y restauración de espacios verdes y humedales ayudan a absorber el exceso de agua de lluvia, evitando inundaciones y reduciendo el estrés en los sistemas de drenaje urbano.
