Kommst du nach Basel, ist der Zoo noch vor dem Bahnhof angeschrieben. Scheint ein begehrter Ort zu sein. Dabei stellt sich die Frage: Ist so ein Tierpark nicht etwas retro? Die Themen unserer Zeit heissen doch Nachhaltigkeit, Umwelt- und Klimaschutz … Absolut, bestätigt Nina Decrue, Naturschutzbeauftragte des Zoo Basel. Und erklärt uns, wie eng das Betreiben des Zollis mit dem Schutz gefährdeter Ökosysteme zusammenhängt.

Selten habe ich in so kurzer Zeit so viel gelernt wie an diesem Treffen mit Nina Decrue im Zolli. Nina ist hier die Naturschutzbeauftragte, denn der Naturschutz ist einer der Grundpfeiler des Basler Zoos. 13 Projekte unterstützt der Zolli aktuell weltweit und leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Schutz und Erhalt gefährdeter Tierarten und ihrer Lebensräume. Kritische Köpfe mögen an dieser Stelle die Stirn in Falten legen – Elefanten, Löwen, Kängurus inmitten der Stadt, was hat das mit deren Schutz zu tun? «Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass wir Menschen uns immer mehr ausbreiten, sind viele Tierarten im Freiland äusserst stark bedroht. Mit den international koordinierten Erhaltungszuchtprogrammen übernehmen wissenschaftlich geführte Zoos wie der Zolli Verantwortung und tragen einen wichtigen Teil zum dringlichen Schutz der Wildtiere auf der ganzen Welt bei. Ohne die Haltung von Tieren in Zoos können wir diesen Auftrag nicht erfüllen», erklärt Nina Decrue und ergänzt: «Auch in der Natur sind die Tiere nicht ‹frei›. Sie leben ebenfalls in begrenzten Lebensräumen, die durch andere Territorien, Flüsse oder Nahrungsverfügbarkeiten gegeben sind. Viele Menschen haben dieses ‹romantische Bild› der Natur im Kopf. Die Natur ist aber nicht romantisch. Sie kann auch brutal sein. Es wird gekämpft und getötet.»

Nina Decrue ist Biologin. Ihre Masterarbeit hat sie im Zoo Basel gemacht. «Ein halbes Jahr lang bin ich vor dem Gehege der Straussen gesessen und hab ihr Verhalten beobachtet», schmunzelt sie. Durch die Beobachtungen konnte dann tatsächlich eine Optimierung am Straussengehege vorgenommen werden. Ihre Leidenschaft jedoch gilt den Meeresbewohnern. Das Vivarium ist ihr zweites Zuhause, ihre Passion. «Ein Spaziergang durch das Vivarium erdet mich komplett. Das ist wie Waldbaden», grinst sie. Dass sie im Zoo Basel arbeiten könne, sei für sie ein Sechser im Lotto. Schon als Kind war sie vom Zoo fasziniert. Besucht sie andere Länder, ist ein Zoobesuch für sie noch heute ein Muss. «Ich wäre jetzt nicht hier, wenn ich als Kind diese Welt nicht entdeckt hätte. Deshalb bin ich überzeugt, dass wir im Zolli eine gute Sache machen», erklärt Nina. «Der Kontakt zwischen Mensch und Tier ist essenziell. Gerade in einer Stadt. Da gibt es ganz viele Aha-Erlebnisse. Zudem sehe ich jeden Tag strahlende Gesichter. Und genau das ist es, was wir wollen: Die Leute über die Begeisterung zu den Tieren abholen. Weil wir bekanntlich nur das schützen, was wir kennen und lieben.»

Und dann holt sie aus ihrer grossen Tasche eine kleine Schachtel mit seltsamen Objekten. Und entführt mich in eine Welt, von der ich keine Ahnung hatte, wie faszinierend sie ist. Die Gebilde sind Hai-Eier. Das eine sieht aus wie eine Schraube und stammt von einem Stierkopfhai. «Das Weibchen nimmt das Ei in den Mund und drückt es in eine Felsspalte», erklärt Nina. «Durch die Schraubenform verhakt es sich und wird so nicht verdriftet. Der junge Hai bleibt bis zu seinem Schlupf gut geschützt in seinem Ei.» Ein anderes Ei, das vom Kleingefleckten Katzenhai, sieht ein wenig aus wie eine Bohnenschote. «Das Vivarium ist eigentlich ein Zoo im Zoo», erklärt Nina. «Hier findest du drei Viertel aller Tierarten und entdeckst unglaubliche Anpassungen und Lebensformen.»

Neugierige Hai-Babys und freche Kraken

Sie erzählt mir von Fischen, die das Geschlecht wechseln können, von Maulbrütern, die ihre befruchteten Eier zum Schutz vor Feinden im Mund aufbewahren, vom Mondfisch, der pro Laichvorgang bis zu 300 Millionen Eier legen kann und von Korallen, die sich geschlechtlich und ungeschlechtlich vermehren. Und sie zeigt mir das Zuhause des Oktopus. «Du findest ihn immer da, wo die Muschelschalen und Schneckenhäuser liegen. Oktopusse, auch Kraken genannt, spielen gerne und deponieren ihre Spielsachen am gleichen Ort. Mir hat mal ein Krake heimlich meinen Fingerring geklaut. Die Tiere sind sehr intelligent, können auch Schraubverschlüsse öffnen. Dabei müssen sie sich all ihr Wissen allein aneignen; Oktopusse vermehren sich nämlich nur einmal im Leben. Kurz nach der Fortpflanzung sterben sie und überlassen ihre Nachkommen sich selbst.»

Nina zeigt mir die Zuchtbecken der Katzen- und Stierkopfhaie in den rückwärtigen Diensten des Vivariums. Ein kleiner Stierkopfhai schwimmt sofort zu uns an den Rand des Beckens. «Du bist aber neugierig», lacht Nina. Haben Fische Persönlichkeiten? «Klar! Es gibt freche, schüchterne oder eben auch neugierige wie diesen hier», schmunzelt Nina. Auf einer Ablage über einem Becken liegt eine Languste. Rot-orange in ganzer Pracht, dabei seltsam leicht. «Die hat sich gehäutet», erklärt uns ein Tierpfleger. «Während des Wachstums wird den Tieren der Panzer immer mal wieder zu eng. Dann schlüpfen sie raus und verstecken sich in den Felsen, bis der neue, grössere Panzer nachgewachsen ist und sie wieder vor Feinden geschützt sind. Wäre gut, wenn das auch bei uns Menschen klappen würde», grinst er.

ZU TISCH IN DER NATUR

Hochzeit, Geburtstag, Firmenfeier? Die Räumlichkeiten im Zoo Basel können für Anlässe gemietet werden. Sei es die Familienzusammenkunft auf der Terrasse oder die GV im Zolli-Saal, das Bankett im Restaurant oder das Jubiläum im Foyer; das Restaurant-Team sorgt für den richtigen Rahmen und erfüllt vom unkomplizierten Buffet bis zum exklusiven Galadiner jeden möglichen Wunsch. Inmitten der Natur, zwischen grollenden Elefanten und kreisenden Störchen verspricht dein Anlass nachhaltig in Erinnerung zu bleiben.

Naturschutz und Bildung an erster Stelle

Es gibt unheimlich viel zu sehen und zu staunen im Vivarium und auch in den Räumen dahinter. Eine verrückte Unterwasserwelt inmitten der Stadt ist das hier mit unendlich vielen wundersamen Geschichten und Geheimnissen. Und plötzlich wird mir ganz anders beim Gedanken an den Zustand der Weltmeere. «Dem Meer geht es schlecht», bestätigt Nina. «Und auch wir als Nicht-Küstenbewohner haben mit unserem Verhalten einen direkten Einfluss darauf. Mit unserem undifferenzierten Fischkonsum oder mit dem, was wir hier ins Wasser schütten; Mikroplastik, Chemikalien, IndustrieAbwasser – alles fliesst ins Meer.

VERBLÜFFENDES HIN TERGRUNDWISSEN

Wer einmal eine individuelle Führung im Zolli genossen hat, weiss: Hier gibt es unendlich viele kuriose und faszinierende Geschichten. Seien es die Wasserwelten im Vivarium, die Menschenaffen oder die grossen Raubtiere – die Zoo-Guides haben unfassbar Spannendes und Verblüffendes zu erzählen und können dir einen ganz besonderen Zugang zur Natur ermöglichen. Übrigens bietet der Zolli auch À-la-carte-Führungen zu einem gewünschten Thema an oder kombiniert eine Führung mit einem Apéro im Elefanten- oder Affenhaus – das Event-Team bespricht gerne Ideen und Möglichkeiten.

ZOO BASEL

Binningerstrasse 40 – zoobasel.ch Der Zoo Basel unterstützt mit seinem Naturschutzfonds gleich zwei Meeres-Projekte. Beim einen werden auf Sansibar Korallenriffe aufgeforstet und nachhaltige Badeschwämme produziert. Das zweite Projekt unterstützt das effektive Management von Meeresschutzgebieten im Mittelmeer.

Diese und sämtliche weiteren Naturschutzprojekte des Zoo Basel werden unter anderem durch den freiwilligen Naturschutzfranken finanziert, den die Zolli-Besuchenden mit dem Ticketkauf entrichten können. «Naturschutz und Bildung haben bei uns im Zoo oberste Priorität», erzählt Nina. Darum reitet heute auch niemand mehr auf Elefanten durch den Zolli oder rennt den Zwerggeissen in ihrem Gehege hinterher. Weil es eben darum geht, Respekt vor den Tieren und der Natur zu vermitteln. Und diese Botschaft geben alle Zolli-Mitarbeitenden tagtäglich an die Besucherinnen und Besucher weiter. Damit sie erkennen, wie gefährdet viele Tierarten und deren Lebensräume sind. In grossen Buchstaben wird dieser Auftrag bereits beim Zoo-Eingang auf den Punkt gebracht: Hier können Menschen «erleben, was es zu bewahren gilt».

WE ONLY REALLY PROTECT W HAT WE KNOW AND LOVE

When you come to Basel, you’ll see directions to the zoo before the ones to the station. Seems to be a popular place. But it does pose a question: Isn’t this sort of zoo a bit old-fashioned? The topics of our era are sustainability and environmental and climate protection… Absolutely, agrees Nina Decrue, the nature conservation officer at Basel Zoo. And then she explains to us how closely the management of the zoo is connected with the protection of endangered ecosystems.

Seldom have I learnt so much, in such a short time, as during this meeting with Nina Decrue at the zoo. Nina is the nature conservation officer here, and nature conservation is one of the fundamental principles of Basel Zoo. Basel zoo currently supports 13 projects worldwide and is thus making a significant contribution to the protection and preservation of endangered species and their habitats. Critical thinkers may frown a bit at this point and ask – elephants, lions, kangaroos in the middle of a city, what on earth does that have to do with their protection? “Because we humans are spreading out more and more, the populations of many animal species living in the wild are severely threatened. The internationally-coordinated conservation breeding programs of scientifically managed zoos, such as Basel Zoo, enable them to take responsibility and make a major contribution to the crucial protection of wild species all over the world. Without keeping the animals in zoos, we cannot fulfil this objective”, explains Nina Decrue and then continues: “Animals are not ‘free’ in nature either. They live in delimited habitats which are set by other territories, rivers or the availability of food. A lot of people have a ‘romantic idea’ of nature in their minds. But nature is not romantic. It too can be brutal. Fights and killing are part of it.”

DINNER IS SERVED IN NATURAL SURRO UNDINGS

Wedding, birthday, company event? Basel Zoo’s premises can be rented for events. Could be a family gathering on the terrace or an AGM in the zoo’s hall, a banquet in the restaurant or an anniversary celebration in the foyer; the restaurant team will make sure you have the right setting and fulfil your every wish, anything from an uncomplicated buffet through to an exclusive gala dinner. Surrounded by nature, between thundering elephants and circling storks, it will be an event to remember.

Nina Decrue is a biologist. She wrote her M.A. at Basel Zoo. “I spent half a year sitting in front of the ostrich enclosure observing their behaviour”, she smiles. And thanks to those observations it really was possible to optimise the ostrich enclosure. But her real zeal is for the creatures of the sea. The vivarium is her second home, her passion. “A walk through the vivarium grounds me completely. It’s like forest bathing”, she laughs. Being able to work in the zoo was like winning the lottery for Nina. Already as a child she was fascinated by the zoo. And if she visits other countries, her trip still always has to include a visit to the zoo. “I wouldn’t be here now, if I hadn’t discovered this world as a child. That’s why I’m so sure that we’re doing a good thing here, with this zoo”, she explains. “Contact between people and animals is essential. Particularly in a city. It creates a lot of ‘aha’ experiences. I see delighted faces every day. And that is exactly what we are hoping for: To get people on board thanks to their delight in the animals. Because, as we all know, we only really protect what we know and love.” Then she takes a small box containing strange objects out of her big bag. And introduces me to a world that I had had no idea was so fascinating. These objects are sharks’ eggs. One looks like a screw, it’s from a bullhead shark. “The female takes the egg in her mouth and pushes it into a fissure in the rock.” explains Nina. “The screw shape makes it snag into the rock, so it doesn’t just drift away. The developing shark stays well-protected in its egg until it hatches.” Another egg, from a small-spotted catshark, looks a bit like a bean pod. “The vivarium is really a zoo within a zoo”, explains Nina. “Three-quarters of all the species are in here and you’ll discover the most amazing adaptations and forms of life.”

Inquisitive baby sharks and bold octopuses She tells me about fish that can change their gender, that keep their fertilised eggs in their mouths to protect them from predators, about the ocean sunfish that can lay up to 300 million eggs per spawning and about the corals that reproduce both sexually and asexually. And she shows me the octopus’ home. “You’ll always find him where the seashells and snail shells are lying around. Octopuses, in seaman’s lore also known as krakens, love to play and keep all their playthings together in one place. An octopus once furtively stole my ring. These animals are so intelligent, they can open screw top lids as well. And yet they have to acquire all their knowledge by themselves; because octopuses only reproduce once in a lifetime. And they die shortly after they have bred leaving their offspring to fend for themselves.”

Nina shows me the breeding tank for the catsharks and the bullhead sharks in the service area hidden away in the rear of the vivarium. A small bullhead shark swims straight over to us, at the edge of the tank. “Well, aren’t you the inquisitive one”, laughs Nina. Do fish have personalities? “ Yes of course! There are cheeky ones, shy ones or ones like this fellow who are very inquisitive”, Nina grins. A spiny lobster is lying on a shelf above one of the tanks. Reddish-orange, in all its glory, but strangely light. “It’s shed its carapace” a zookeeper explains to us. “While they are growing, their carapace becomes too tight from time to time. Then they shed it and hide away among the rocks, until a new, larger carapace has grown and they have protection from their predators again. It would be great if it would work like that for us humans too”, he grins.

Nature conservancy and education come first There is an incredible amount to see and be amazed by in the vivarium and in the areas behind it too. It’s a crazy underwater world right in the middle of town, with countless miraculous tales and mysteries. And I suddenly feel queasy when I think about the state the world’s oceans are in. “The sea is in a bad state”, Nina confirms my worries. “And we have a direct influence with our behaviour as well, although we don’t live at the coast. For example, with our unthinking consumption of fish or what we chuck into the water here; microplastics, chemicals, industrial wastewater – everything flows down to the sea.” With its conservation fund, Basel Zoo supports two marine projects. One of them is afforesting coral reefs in Zanzibar and producing sustainable bath sponges. The second project supports effective management of marine sanctuaries in the Mediterranean. These and all Basel Zoo’s other nature conservancy projects are at least partially financed by the voluntary nature conservancy franc that the zoo’s visitors can donate when buying their tickets. “Nature conservancy and education are our top priorities here at the zoo”, says Nina. That’s why there are no more elephant rides through the zoo and why no one is chasing the pygmy goats around their enclosure anymore either. Because it’s all about imparting respect for the animals and nature. And this is the message all the zoo’s staff pass on to the visitors on a daily basis. So that they realise just how endangered many animal species and their habitats are. This mission is summed up in large letters right over the entrance gate of the zoo: people can “get to know what we should be preserving here”.

Ruben Masar ist Wirtschaftsanwalt und wohnt im Meret Oppenheim Hochhaus. Er fühlt sich wohl in dieser Stadt in der Stadt, in diesem Mikrokosmos namens Gundeli, weil das Quartier alles hergibt, was die Seele begehrt.

Welches ist deine absolute Lieblingsecke im Quartier?

Es gibt viele kleinere Cachets, so zum Beispiel der Hinterhof des portugiesischen Restaurants Spark, das Gärtchen des Restaurants zur Wanderruh, der kultige Plattenladen hinter der Heiliggeistkirche oder die Bücher-Brocki an der Güterstrasse. Und natürlich meine Wohnung – die Aussicht über die Zuggleise, die ganze Stadt, auf die Hügel hinter der Stadt und noch viel weiter ist jeden Tag aufs Neue atemberaubend.

Was sollten sich Touristen in deinem Quartier unbedingt angucken?

Das Gundeldinger Feld. Ein Mikrokosmos im Mikrokosmos quasi. Die Art und Weise, wie ein früheres Industrieareal in die Stadt eingefügt wurde, ist einmalig. Und es funktioniert! Im Gegensatz zu anderen vergleichbaren Belebungsprojekten stiess das Gundeldinger Feld von Beginn weg auf grossen Zuspruch in der Bevölkerung.

Wie sieht ein perfekter Tag in deinem Quartier aus?

Nach einem ersten Espresso in meiner Wohnung mit Blick auf die aufwachende Stadt treffe ich mich mit Freunden auf ein ausgiebiges Frühstück im Kaffee Finkmüller oder auf einen Brunch im Avant-Gouz. Danach gehts in die Bücher-Brocki, um ungestört zu stöbern, zu lesen und dabei die Zeit zu vergessen. Und weil die Seele ohne Musik nicht funktioniert, statte ich Schmocki's Ohrwurm Oase, dem kultigen Plattenladen hinter der Heiliggeistkirche, einen Besuch ab und entdecke dort die eine oder andere Trouvaille.

Ruben Masar is a corporate lawyer and lives in the Meret Oppenheim tower block. He feels very at home in this town within the town, the microcosm known as Gundeli, because it has everything the heart could desire.

What’s your absolutely favourite corner in this neighbourhood? There are plenty of hidden little delights, for example the courtyard of the Spark Portuguese restaurant, the tiny garden of the ‘zur Wanderruh’ restaurant, the iconic record shop behind the Heiliggeist church and the second-hand bookshop in the Güterstrasse. And my apartment of course – the view over the train tracks, the whole city, the hills beyond and even further is breathtaking every single day.

What should tourists definitely go and see in your neighbourhood? The Gundeldinger Feld. A kind of microcosm within a microcosm. The way this former industrial area has been integrated into the city is quite unique. And it works! Unlike some other, comparable revitalisation projects, the Gundeldinger Feld was welcomed by the people who live here right from the start.

What would be a perfect day in your neighbourhood? After the first espresso in my apartment watching the city slowly awakening, I would meet up with my friends for a lavish breakfast at the Finkmüller café or for a brunch at the Avant-Gouz. Then I would head off to the Bücher-Brocki second-hand bookshop to browse through the books there undisturbed, to read and forget about the time. And because my spirit can’t survive without music, I would then pay a visit to Schmocki's Ohrwurm Oase, the iconic record shop behind the Heiliggeist church, and uncover some lucky find or two.

Die Bäckerei Bumann ist mein absoluter Lieblingsbäcker – mit einer stets freundlichen Bedienung. Das gilt genauso für alle anderen Geschäfte im Quartier und natürlich auch für meinen eigenen Veloladen. Durch unseren Standort im Quartier kennt man sich untereinander und es herrscht immer ein warmherziger Umgang.

Was sollten sich Touristen in deinem Quartier unbedingt angucken?

Der Basler Zoo ist für Kinder und Erwachsene ein Erlebnis. Wenn man in der Umgebung ist, lohnt es sich aber ganz generell, einfach durch die Strassen zu laufen, die verschiedenen Bauarten der Häuser zu bestaunen und einen Blick in die Pauluskirche zu werfen.

Gibt es eine besondere Geschichte, die du mit diesem Quartier verbindest?

Mein letzter Lehrling war in diesem Quartier zu Hause, er kam das erste Mal mit 12 Jahren zu mir. Er kam immer und immer wieder vorbei, um sein Fahrrad selbst reparieren zu können und so lernten wir uns immer besser kennen. Heute ist er wie ein zweiter Sohn für mich und er blieb ganze 15 Jahre bei mir.

Daniel Ammann is a motor and bicycle mechanic and he owns the ‘Speichä 36’ bicycle shop. He loves all the lovely old buildings in the Bachletten neighbourhood, and that there’s a shop for almost anything you might want to buy. He appreciates the fact that this area is so clean and that relations between the people who live here are friendly and informal, which makes daily life in the Bachletten very pleasant.

Can you give us an insider tip for your neighbourhood? The Bumann bakery is my absolutely favourite bakery – and the service is always really friendly. But that is true of all the other shops in the neighbourhood too, including of course my bicycle shop. The fact that we are in the middle of the neighbourhood means that we all know each other and there the social interactions are always very warm-hearted.

What should tourists definitely go and see in your neighbourhood? Basel Zoo is a fantastic experience for children, but for adults too. And when you are here, it’s worth just wandering around the streets, admiring all the different architectural styles of the houses and taking a quick look inside the Paulus church. Is there one particular story that you associate with this area? My last apprentice lived in the neighbourhood and the first time he came to my shop was when he was 12 years old. He came back again and again, so he could repair his bike himself and that was how we got to know each other better. He is like a second son to me now and he stayed for a full 15 years.
