We are delighted to launch our spring dairy catalogue in advance of the 2026 calving season, allowing you as herd owners to make earlier breeding decisions. In this catalogue you will discover an extensive range of exciting dairy and beef sires to complement your farming system.
We would like to acknowledge our partner the National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC) which has been operating the national breeding programmes for Progressive Genetics and Munster Bovine for the last 20 years. NCBC’s extensive breeding programmes reflect our shared commitment to accelerating animal genetics in Ireland. NCBC has contributed considerable progress to the national dairy and beef herd and will continue to invest in the latest innovative technologies to bring further improvements in fertility, milk solids, efficiency, beef merit, and animal health - with a particular focus on TB resistant sires. By prioritising genetic improvement and performance, we aim to provide farmers with the tools they need to enhance productivity and profitability.
We have selected an extensive range of New Genomic Dairy Sires and Elite EBI Sires that exemplify genetic excellence and excel in key traits related to production, health, and fertility. These sires highlight the significant genetic gains achieved through the successful breeding programme implemented by NCBC. Additionally, our dairy beef programme has experienced substantial growth in recent years, driven by an increased demand for sexed semen. We proudly offer the largest selection of dairy beef sires in Ireland, featuring a diverse range of breeds such as Angus, Hereford, Belgian Blue, Limousin, Charolais, and more. Using high beef sub-index dairy beef sires presents clear benefits, including enhanced commercial beef value and improved calf prices for dairy farmers. It is essential for herd owners to choose high beef sub-index dairy beef sires that align with their calving difficulty preferences to optimise their herd’s performance.
At Progressive Genetics, we take pride in offering a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet your needs, including elite genetic solutions, milk recording, pregnancy testing, Genocells, Agrinet Herdapp, calf collection schemes, AI services, and our newest partnership with MSD Sense Hub for heat detection systems. If you would like more information about any of our services, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Progressive Genetics representative.
The September 2025 genetic evaluation from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) introduced updates to the Economic Breeding Index (EBI). These changes featured improved methodologies for assessing health and management, along with revised economic values that consider rising input costs. Furthermore, the base cow population was updated to reflect genetic advancements in milk production and fertility, shifting from cows born in 2005 to those born in 2015. Consequently, this base change will result in an overall reduction of €97 in EBI for all animals, with decreases of €45 in the milk sub-index and €52 in the fertility sub-index.
As you review our Spring 2026 catalogue, we encourage you to explore the outstanding genetics and innovative technologies that will improve the overall performance of your farm. The Progressive Genetics team is dedicated to building strong relationships with our customers. We look forward to collaborating with you and develop your future genetics to achieve your breeding objectives. Thank you for your continued support, and we wish you great success in the 2026 season.
Brendan Scanlon Chief Executive

The base cow has been updated from animals born in 2005 to cows born in 2015 (calved in 2017 and milk recorded for the next 5 years). Cows born in 2015 have an EBI that’s €97 higher than those born in 2005, indicating that the national herd has improved by an impressive €97.
The gain in EBI is due to improvements in Milk Sub-Index (€45) and Fertility Sub-Index (€52), highlighting the success of Irish breeding programmes. This means that your herd’s EBI figure will drop by the same amount due to the national adjustment (€97).
This doesn’t mean your cows are genetically worse – it simply reflects the new reference point. For instance, a cow with an EBI of €197 in the May evaluation, will now have an EBI of €100.
Teagasc also have updated the economic values used in EBI to more accurately reflect higher output prices (€0.40c/litre) and higher input costs such as feed €370/tonne and fertiliser prices €550/tonne. The most notable changes will be seen in the Beef and Maintenance Sub Indexes due to the increased economic value of beef and rising feed costs.
Combining the economic changes with the base change, farmers will see a reduction of approximately €83 on each animal.
As before, the Maintenance SI can be used to estimate the average mature liveweight of cows in your herd. This gives you a reliable guide for expected mature liveweights of animals. Each €1 change affects the weight by approximately 1.7kg.

Martin Davin and Lena Sheahan are farming in Eglish, near Rathdowney, Co. Laois. Martin operates a high production spring calving grass-based system, with a clear objective of producing high kgs of fat and protein from as much grass as possible. Martin’s breeding goal is to breed a herd of cows that deliver high fertility (days in milk), health, milk solids & components while maximising milk value (cent/litre). Martin’s breeding goals are achieved through a consistent sire-selection process, supported by good management and heifer rearing practices.

The table above demonstrates the progress in production and fertility performance over time. Genetic improvement plays a crucial role on Martin’s farm. Each year by selecting sires with elite EBI and breeding values he improves the genetic potential for production, components, and fertility. Heifer rearing plays a crucial role in achieving the genetic potential, as proved by the first-lactation cows, which averaged 512 kg of milk solids with 4.53% fat and 3.87% protein. Nutritional management is key, excellent grass quality supplemented with 1,200 kg of concentrates per cow in 2025. The genetics of the herd continues to improve year after year, with significant emphasis on fertility and the percentages of fat and protein values. This sire selection strategy not only increases milk solids production but also maximises milk value in the A+B-C milk payment system.
Continuing to enhance the overall EBI remains a priority, with a strong emphasis on milk solids, percentages, and fertility. Through the herd’s excellent fertility and survivability genetics, a significant opportunity now exists to increase the herds average lactation age to 4+ lactations, with a target of achieving 650kg of milk solids per cow. The bull team for 2026 is shown in the table below. Additionally, Table 2 provides a summary of the EBI and production PTAs for the herd in 2025. Notably, despite a negative milk kg figure of -42, the herd still managed to produce an impressive 620 kg of milk solids/cow, demonstrating the effectiveness of the breeding and management strategies in place.

The National Cattle Breeding Centre is the largest Dairy Breeding Programme in Ireland and is dedicated to driving the genetic progress of your future herd. The 2026 list of new genomic dairy sires represents our strongest lineup yet. The list showcases the wide range of bulls available with exceptional combinations of milk solids, components percentages, fertility, health, maintenance, and conformation.

Our Elite EBI dairy sires are selected for their exceptional genetics, which play a crucial role in increasing milk solids, fertility, health and overall herd performance. These sires are selected based on a combination of traits, including; fat and protein content, fertility and overall health. These sires are selected to increase milk value for A+B-C milk payment system.

Genocells will allow Milk Recording customers to identify the highest contributors to Bulk Tank SCC by analysing a single bulk tank milk sample.
It is based on matching the genotype (DNA code) of the cow to her DNA in the somatic cells in the bulk tank sample.

This service is only available to Milk Recording customers whose herds are fully genotyped.

Genocells is now available as a service to Milk Recording Customers.
