Cari lettori,

apriamo questo numero della rivista – come accaduto in quello scorso – con un articolo dedicato alla situazione fa‑ vorevole della economia ceca, concen‑ trandoci in particolare sulla crescente attrattività del Paese per gli investitori.

Secondo le pagelle degli esperti del business internazionale, la Repubblica Ceca merita oggi i voti migliori fra tutti gli stati della cosiddetta Nuova Europa.

A risaltare negli ultimi tempi è soprat‑ tutto la intensità degli investimenti che giungono dall’Estremo oriente, in particolare quelli in arrivo dalla Cina.

Il Paese del Dragone in questo periodo sta mandando a Praga non solo capi‑ tali di investimento, ma anche turisti a frotte. Un’invasione mai vista in pre‑ cedenza, della quale si coglie imme‑ diatamente la portata camminando nelle vie del centro storico, quelle più battute dai visitatori stranieri, dove è un interminabile susseguirsi di occhi a mandorla. Il fenomeno non riguar‑ da solo la Capitale, ma tutte le prin‑ cipali attrazioni turistiche del Paese.

Per esempio a Karlovy Vary – sino a due anni fa frequentata specialmen‑ te dai russi – negozianti, ristoratori e albergatori sono concordi nel dire:

we open this issue of the magazine, as we did in the previous one, with an article dedicated to the rather favorable situation of the Czech economy, while focusing in particular on the country’s increasing attractiveness for investors.

According to the report cards of the experts of international business, the Czech Republic today deserves the highest marks among all the states of the so-called New Europe. What has stood out in particular in recent times, is the intensity of the investments coming from the Far East, especially those coming from China.

In this period, the Land of the Dragon has not only been sending investment capital to Prague, but also tourists in

Voltando pagina, sottolineiamo l’arti‑ colo dedicato a Jára Cimrman, un per‑ sonaggio che i cechi adorano e di cui gli stranieri spesso persino ignorano l’esi‑ stenza. Eppure la sua straordinarietà è tale – filosofo, inventore, architetto, musicista, esploratore, pittore, e chi più ne ha più ne metta – che sarebbe assolutamente riduttivo definirlo un semplice eroe teatrale, prodotto di mera fantasia artistica. Personaggio

inesistente probabilmente sì, ma dal quale non si può prescindere per capire qualcosa di più della Repubblica Ceca.

Ad arricchire questo numero una se‑ rie di altri argomenti, che spaziano – giusto per citarne alcuni – dalla storia dell’industria tessile ceca, ai nuovi segnali di vitalità del cinema ceco, senza mancare di fare un salto a conoscere l’incantevole, e poco cono‑ sciuto quartiere praghese di Břevnov.

The phenomenon doesn’t only concern the capital, but all the main tourist attractions of the country. For example in Karlovy Vary, which until two years ago was frequented mainly by the Russians, shopkeepers, restaurateurs and hoteliers agree in saying, “this year Chinese guests are saving the season for us”.

Turning the page, we highlight the article on Jára Cimrman, a character that the Czechs love and of whom foreigners often even ignore the existence. Yet his achievements as a philosopher, inven-

tor, architect, musician, explorer, artist, you name it, are so extraordinary that it would be quite an understatement to call him a simple theatrical hero, the product of mere artistic imagination.

A nonexistent character? Probably, yet one which you cannot ignore in order to understand something more about the Czech Republic.

We enrich the issue with a number of other topics, ranging, just to name a few, from the history of the Czech textile industry, to new signs of vitality in Czech cinema, without failing paying a visit, and getting better acquainted with the delightful and little known Prague district of Břevnov. There is nothing left for us to do but wish you a happy reading

A privileged destination for the arrival of foreign capital and monitored by the Asiatic countries that intend to expand into Europe

The Czech Republic is back in fashion, or perhaps, for its customers, it had never faded into oblivion. The international economic crisis, coupled with the announcement of new, less generous incentive policies had caused many of them to waver. But the new favourable trend and end of the negative cycle of the economy, including the good results achieved, following the Central Bank’s policies on the currency, are now all rowing in the same direction.

This is confirmed by Prague’s 25th posi-

tion in the BDO International Business Compass ranking, which takes into account the attractiveness for doing business in 174 countries worldwide.

The Czech Republic is actually in first position among the countries of the so-called New Europe, nine positions ahead of Poland, 14 ahead of Hungary and 15 ahead of Slovakia in the international classification. This rating, together with that of Moody’s, allow Prague to look with languishing eyes to the “mermaids” of foreign investors,

especially from the Far East: China and South Korea in particular.

As we said earlier, Prague, which ranks first according to the BDO index among the former communist countries, has gained many positions also thanks to the positive economic indicators (GDP, inflation, public debt) political (stable government) and social (education and health). However, to be honest, these good results contrast with the absence of the Czech Republic in this year’s ranking of the top 25 countries in

the world that are most attractive for investments, compiled by A.T. Kearney (in 2005 and 2010, was respectively in 12th and 17th position according to the FDI Confidence Index). Nevertheless, this unattained entry has not discouraged Prague – to such an extent that Karel Kučera, CEO of CzechInvest, actually raised the stake: “Our goal, in the next few years, is to be in the list of the top ten countries in the world that are most attractive for foreign capital”.

agency figures, in the first half of 2015, it actually mediated 49 investment projects (for both Czech and foreign companies), for a total of 21 billion crowns. At first sight, a rather disappointing result, if compared to the same period in 2014 (78 billion). However, this last figure appeared to have been “inflated” by the old more favourable incentive system, which had led many investors to take action before the current regime came into force. By the end of 2014, the total number of projects

La crisi economica internazionale, insie‑ me all’annuncio di nuove politiche di incentivi meno generose, avevano fatto titubare tanti. Ma il nuovo vento favo‑ revole, la conclusione del ciclo negativo dell’economia e i risultati della politica della Banca centrale sulla moneta nazionale remano, adesso, tutti nello stesso verso. Lo dimostra la 25esima posizione conquistata da Praga nella classifica BDO International Business Compass, che prende in considerazione l’attrattività per il business di 174 Paesi a livello mondiale. La Repubblica Ceca è addirittura al primo posto fra i Paesi della cosiddetta Nuova Europa, stac‑ cando di ben nove posizioni la Polonia, di 14 l’Ungheria e di 15 la Slovacchia nel ranking internazionale. Questo dato, co‑ niugato con i buoni giudizi di Moody’s, consentono a Praga di guardare con occhi languidi alle nuove sirene degli investitori stranieri, soprattutto quelle che suonano dall’Estremo Oriente: Cina e Corea del Sud tra tutte.

Praga, che come detto è prima nell’in‑ dice BDO tra i Paesi ex comunisti, ha

guadagnato molte posizioni grazie ai buoni indicatori economici (Pil, inflazione, debito pubblico), politici (stabilità di governo) e sociali (istru‑ zione e sanità). A fare da contraltare a questo buon piazzamento – per dirla tutta – c’è l’assenza della Repubblica Ceca nell’ultima classifica, pubblicata quest’anno, dei primi 25 paesi del mondo più attrattivi per gli investi‑ menti stilata da A.T. Kearney (nel 2005 e nel 2010 era rispettivamente 12esima e 17esima nel Fdi Confi‑ dence Index). Quest’ultimo mancato ingresso non ha però scoraggiato Pra‑ ga, tant’è che Karel Kučera, direttore generale di CzechInvest, ha addirittu‑ ra rilanciato: “Il nostro obiettivo, nei prossimi anni, è di essere nella top ten mondiale dei Paesi più attrattivi per i capitali stranieri”.

L’Agenzia governativa CzechInvest, sta‑ tistiche alla mano, nel primo semestre 2015 ha mediato 49 progetti di investi‑ mento (sia da parte di aziende ceche che straniere), per una cifra totale di 21 miliardi di corone. A prima vista un dato deludente, se paragonato allo stesso periodo del 2014 (78 miliardi).

For the last 18 months, the favourite sector for investors has been the automotive industry that, besides the highest number of projects involved, is also in first position for the amount of disbursements made. In first position is the South Korean tire manufacturer, Nexen Tire Corporation, that in the industrial area of Triangle (Žatec, Region of Ústí nad Labem), will build a 23 billion Crown factory (almost 800 million euro). Then other producers from the auto sector will follow: the German Brose and Continental Automotive, as well as the South Korean Hyundai Mobis.

Despite a decline during the first half of 2015, the trend is still considered satisfactory according to the minister for Industry and Trade, Jan Mládek: “The

In this last period, we have been strengthening investments in the area of data processing centres, shared services and the aviation industry. They are highly advanced technological sectors with a very high added value, that require great experience and a skilled workforce. But, we still have a competitive advantage here”.

A further step to attract even more industries and foreign capital, is the simplification of the Building Act and an easier access to public tenders and European funds.

In questi ultimi 18 mesi, tra i settori preferiti dagli investitori stranieri, fa sempre la voce grossa il settore auto, che oltre al maggior numero di pro‑ getti ha anche il primato degli esborsi più cospicui. In testa il produttore di pneumatici sudcoreano Nexen Tire Corporation, che realizzerà nella zona industriale Triangle (Žatec, Regione di Ústí nad Labem), uno stabilimento da

23 miliardi di corone (quasi 800 milio‑ ni di euro). A seguire altri tre produt‑ tori del settore auto: i tedeschi della Brose e della Continental Automotive, nonché i sudcoreani della Hyundai Mobis.

Nonostante il calo avvertito nella prima metà del 2015, il trend è co‑ munque ritenuto soddisfacente dal ministro dell’Industria e del Commer‑ cio Jan Mládek: “La Repubblica Ceca è attualmente un Paese stabile e aper‑ to, che stimola gli investitori cechi ed esteri verso uno sviluppo continuo dei loro affari. In questo ultimo periodo si stanno rafforzando gli investimenti nel settore dei centri di elaborazione

dati, dei servizi condivisi o nell’indu‑ stria aeronautica. Si tratta di aree tec‑ nologicamente molto avanzate con un valore aggiunto molto alto, che ri‑ chiedono esperienza e una forza lavo‑ ro qualificata. Qui abbiamo ancora un vantaggio competitivo”. Un ulteriore passo avanti per attrarre ancora di più le industrie e i capitali stranieri è la semplificazione della legge sull’edili‑ zia e un accesso più facile agli appalti pubblici e ai fondi europei.

are evaluating and testing the possibilities for direct investments and capital in the Czech Republic and that, in some cases, have already a foot in the Central European country. Within the next two years, four Chinese banks intend to open in Prague: the Bank of China, which is the only one that has, so far, officially confirmed its intention, then the China Construction Bank (specialized in financing transport sector projects, and which is obviously interested in the development

of the Czech motorway network), the China Development Bank (specialized in financing road, rail and energy projects), and the ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, one of the leading institutions in the world).

And just to mention a few more examples, in mid-July an operation was concluded that allowed the Chinese Shaangu Power to buy 75% of Ekol, a Brno company – producer of steam turbines – for 1.34 billion crowns.

Furthermore, the representatives of

the Chinese province of Hebei have announced a three-year plan to build in Pasohlávky (30 km south of Brno), a large Spa facility, with nursing homes, wellness centre, hotels that will create hundreds of new jobs, thanks to a two-billion crown project.

As President Miloš Zeman stated quite recently, Beijing is alleged to be carrying out a sensational deal: it is interested in buying the historic truck manufacturer Tatra, with which it is having talks. And also Chinese are

E poi, solo per citare alcuni esempi, a metà luglio si è con‑ clusa l’operazione con la quale i cinesi della Shaangu Power hanno compra‑ to il 75% della Ekol, azienda di Brno produttrice di turbine a vapore, con un esborso di 1,34 miliardi di corone.

Inoltre i rappresentanti della provin‑ cia cinese di Hebei hanno annunciato l’intenzione di realizzare nei prossimi tre anni a Pasohlávky (30 chilometri a sud di Brno) un mega insediamento termale, con case di cura, wellness, hotel e centinaia di nuovi posti di lavoro, grazie a un progetto da due miliardi di corone.

Pechino – secondo quanto rivelato di recente dal presidente Miloš Zeman – ha pronto anche un affondo che avrebbe del clamoroso: è interessato infatti a comprare lo storico produtto‑ re di camion Tatra, con cui è in tratta‑ tive. E sempre cinesi sono gli uomini d’affari che sono pronti ad allungare i loro potenti tentacoli sul mercato immobiliare ceco, con particolare at‑ tenzione per gli edifici di destinazione commerciale e gli uffici.

the business people who are ready to stretch out their powerful tentacles into the Czech real estate market, with a particular interest in buildings for commercial, shopping and office use.

Particularly dynamic in the Czech market recently is the example of the Chinese group Cefc. Besides buying two historical and prestigious properties in Prague, (Martinický palác in Hradčany and the former headquarters of Živnostenská banka on Na příkopě), they are also buying a 79.4%

stake in Pivovary Lobkowicz, the fifth Czech producer of beer. Cefc is also going to become the owner of 60% of the Prague football club Slavia.

There are even rumours that the Fosun Group – the giant private Chinese group that recently bought Club Med, as well as the historic Palazzo Broggi in Milan, in Cordusio Square (former headquarters of UniCredit) – is also planning to invest in the Czech Republic from one to three billion euro in the real estate sector, including industrial

companies, with a special interest for start-up technology companies.

Finally, if this wasn’t enough, the pharmaceutical billionaire Xiu Laigui, one of the richest men in his country, at the head of a group, which had a turnover of eight billion dollars last year, is evaluating business and shopping opportunities in Prague and its surroundings. The Czech Republic could thus become the European base from which to export business to the Old Continent.

Not only China, though. Also other almond-eyed people are watching the Czech Republic. Among them is the famous Taiwanese Foxconn, which produces the iPhone for Apple, has signed a new agreement with the Czech government to build a design centre for the development of products aimed at the European market, including a data centre. Foxconn, which is already present in the Czech Republic with two factories that produce hardware for the IT sector and the second largest exporter in the country, will invest another 2.5 billion crowns between 2015 and 2018.

A particularly consistent strategy that reveals a possible deeper objective of Asian business – especially by Beijing – to establish a geopolitical position in a country, such as the Czech Republic, that could function as a fundamental crossroads of interests in Central Europe.

A dare un esempio concreto di par‑ ticolare dinamismo sul mercato ceco è stato in particolare, di recente, il gruppo cinese Cefc. Oltre ad aver comprato due storici e prestigiosi im‑ mobili praghesi (Martinický palác a Hradčany e l’ex sede di Živnostenská banka su Na příkopě), si sta compran‑ do anche una quota del 79,4% nel Pi‑ vovary Lobkowicz (quinto produttore ceco di birra), il Cefc sta diventando anche proprietario del 60% della so‑ cietà calcistica Slavia Praga.

Sempre a proposito dell’avanzata delle imprese del Dragone, è anche circolata la voce che Fosun Group – il colosso privato cinese che ha compra‑ to di recente il Club Med e lo storico Palazzo Broggi di Milano, in piazza Cordusio (ex sede UniCredit) – abbia in programma di spendere in Repub‑ blica Ceca da uno sino a tre miliardi di euro nel settore immobiliare e per

assicurarsi aziende industriali, con interesse molto elevato anche per aziende tecnologiche start-up.

Infine, se questo non bastasse, il mi‑ liardario del settore farmaceutico Xiu Laigui, uno degli uomini più ricchi del suo Paese, alla guida di un gruppo che lo scorso anno ha avuto un fatturato di otto miliardi di dollari, sta valutando opportunità di business e possibilità di shopping a Praga e dintorni. La Repub‑ blica Ceca potrebbe quindi diventare la base europea per esportare il suo busi‑ ness nel Vecchio Continente.

Non solo Cina, però. Anche altri occhi a mandorla guardano alla Repubblica Ceca. Tra queste la famosa taiwanese Foxconn, che produce anche gli iPho‑ ne per Apple, ha siglato un nuovo ac‑ cordo con il governo ceco per costruire un centro design, di sviluppo prodotti per il mercato europeo e un data cen‑ ter. Foxconn – già presente in Repub‑

blica Ceca con due stabilimenti che producono hardware per il settore IT, secondo esportatore più importante del Paese – spenderà altri 2,5 miliardi di corone tra il 2015 e il 2018.

Una strategia quindi di particolare costanza che rivela il probabile ulte‑ riore obiettivo del business asiatico, soprattutto da parte di Pechino, di avere un posizionamento geopolitico, in uno stato come la Repubblica Ceca, fondamentale crocevia di interessi in Europa centrale.

L’Italia non vuole stare a guardare E in futuro, in questo clima di ripresa della economia ceca e di rosee pro‑ spettive, anche l’Italia potrebbe fare la sua parte. In occasione, lo scorso in‑ verno, della visita del sottosegretario agli Esteri e alla Cooperazione Inter‑ nazionale, Benedetto Della Vedova, è stato discusso proprio il rilancio dei rapporti commerciali fra i due paesi e della presenza degli investimenti ita‑ liani in Repubblica Ceca. A farsi pro‑ motore dell’iniziativa è stato l’amba‑ sciatore Aldo Amati, che lo considera fra i suoi obiettivi di maggior rilevan‑ za. Colossi come Finmeccanica, che segue con attenzione il programma del governo di Praga di aumentare il budget del settore Difesa, e Ansaldo Nucleare, che guarda con interesse ai programmi cechi di sviluppo delle energia atomica, hanno partecipato agli incontri insieme ad circa trenta società italiane e altrettante ceche con particolare attenzione al settore della meccanica, della produzione della plastica, delle nanotecnologie, dell’automotive, dell’abbigliamento e dell’alimentare. È il caso di dire: se sono rose, fioriranno.

In fact, last winter, on the occasion of a visit by the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Benedetto Della Vedova, they discussed about reviving trade relations between the two countries

and the amount of Italian investments in the Czech Republic. The strong promoter of the initiative was Ambassador Aldo Amati, who considers it one of his most important objectives. Large companies, such as Finmeccanica have been closely following the Prague government’s plans to increase the Defence budget.

And also Ansaldo Nucleare, which is

Ci sono insomma tutte le premes‑ se perché si avveri la previsione del CzechTourims, l’agenzia statale ceca di sostegno al turismo, che prevede per il 2015 un totale di quasi 300 mila ospiti cinesi, in aumento circa del 50% rispetto al 2014.

Gli operatori cechi si fregano le mani, perché gli arrivi dalla Cina stanno curan‑ do le ferite causate dal crollo del turismo russo, in caduta libera a Praga e dintorni da quando sono scoppiate le tensioni fra Mosca e l’Ucraina, in conseguenza inol‑ tre della crisi economica in Russia.

Dopo l’ondata giapponese degli anni Novanta e l’arrivo in massa dei corea‑ ni a partire dal 2000, oggi i cinesi sono anche i principali rappresentanti del turismo asiatico a Praga e dintorni. I numeri parlano chiaro: lo scorso anno i turisti provenienti dal Paese del Dra‑ gone sono stati 211 mila, contro i 195 mila coreani e i 125 mila giapponesi.

A fine settembre sarà poi attivato il nuovo collegamento aereo diretto Praga - Pechino, che verrà operato dalla compagnia cinese Hainan Airli‑ nes, con voli tre volte alla settimana, effettuati con un Boeing 767. Anche questo è un segnale della dimensione del fenomeno, tanto più che paiono già a buon punto le trattative per

l’attivazione di un altro collegamento diretto, il Praga - Shangai.

Soggiorni brevi e tanto shopping I cinesi sono turisti da toccata e fuga, con soggiorni che mediamente non vanno oltre le due notti, in quanto i loro viaggi sono quasi sempre com‑ binati con altre città d’Europa, come Roma, Vienna e Parigi. In così breve

While seeming to be not so familiar with good manners, in compensation, they are big spenders and are great romantics. This could be the typical profile of Chinese tourists who have been flocking to Prague for some time, as they have indeed in all the most beautiful cities in the world. What contributed to attracting them to the Czech capital recently, it seems, was a romantic movie, set in the Golden City, a Chinese production, which has had a huge success this year in the Land of the Dragon.

First things first, though, and let’s describe this invasion using figures. In the second quarter of 2015, as noted by Český statistický úřad, the national statistical authority of the Czech Republic, the number of Chinese tourists reached 86,000, a figure close to that of Italian visitors (91,000), with

the difference being that the latter, in comparison, are merely a stone’s throw from Prague.

There are in fact all the premises for the predictions of CzechTourims to come true, the Czech state agency supporting tourism, which for 2015 expects a total of nearly 300,000 Chinese visitors, an increase of approximately 50% from 2014.

The Czech operators are rubbing their hands, because arrivals from China are treating the wounds caused by the collapse of the Russian tourism, in freefall in Prague and its surroundings since tensions erupted between Moscow and Ukraine, also on account of the economic crisis in Russia.

After the Japanese wave of the nineties, and the mass arrival of Koreans from 2000, today the Chinese are also the main representatives of the Asian

tourism in Prague and its surroundings. The numbers speak for themselves: last year, the number of tourists from the Land of the Dragon was 211,000, ahead of 195,000 Koreans and 125,000 from Japan.

At the end of September the new direct air link Prague – Beijing will be activated, which will be operated by the Chinese company Hainan Airlines, with flights three times a week, performed with a Boeing 767. This is also a sign of the scale of the phenomenon, especially considering the seemingly well-advanced stage of negotiations for the activation of another direct connection: Prague - Shanghai.

Brief stays and very much shopping The Chinese are very much “hit and run” tourists with average stays that do not go beyond two nights, as their trips are almost always combined with

visits of other European cities, such as Rome, Vienna and Paris. In such a short time, but at a frantic pace, almost always also managing the classic out-of-town trip, with Česky Krumlov and Karlovy Vary being the most popular, they above all like to dedicate themselves to what seems to be their favourite passion, shopping, an activity in which they excel.

The Chinese are in fact the top spending tourists par excellence, and for their willingness to dip into their wallets they have now overtaken the Russians and everyone else. In this area, they buy Made in Czech Republic, therefore crystal, but do not neglect other products, such as the luxury shops of the fashion centre of Prague. It is no coincidence that some of the boutiques of Pařížská ulice have begun to equip themselves with at least one shop assistant who can mumble at least a few words of Mandarin.

Con uno scontrino medio di circa 21 mila corone (quasi 800 euro), si clas‑ sificano al primo posto nella classifica dello shopping tax free, ovvero degli acquisti di beni per i quali, all’uscita dalla Repubblica Ceca viene richiesto il rimborso dell’Iva. (1 luglio) Praga alla guida del V4. La Repubblica ceca inaugura l’anno di presidenza del Gruppo di Visegrad, formato anche da Ungheria, Polonia e Slovacchia. Le priorità indicate sono il rafforzamento della coesione interna del cosiddetto V4, lo sviluppo della collaborazione nei settori della energia, sicurezza e difesa, nonché la crescita della economia digitale.

(5 giugno) Ai cechi attirati dalla marijuana.

Si calcola che in Europa siano fra i più assidui consumatori di questa sostanza, nonostante la proibizione. Nell’ultimo anno ne avrebbe fatto uso un cittadino su cinque, nella fascia di età fra 15 e 34 anni (percentuale che sale al 40% fra gli studenti). Lo si apprende dal rapporto annuale dell’Osservatorio europeo delle droghe e delle tossicodipendenze, presentato a Lisbona, che segnala anche il problema ecstasy (5% popolazione) e pervitin, che dalla Repubblica Ceca viene esportata.

Economia, affari e finanza

(3 giugno) Registro elettronico del fatturato.

Il governo vara il disegno di legge che ne prevede la introduzione il prossimo anno.

Il nuovo sistema – inizialmente obbligatorio solo per servizi di ristorazione e alberghi - è sostenuto dal ministro delle Finanze Andrej Babiš, il quale si augura di poter così limitare l’economia sommersa e far aumentare il gettito fiscale. Critiche da parte dell’opposizione di centrodestra e dei leader delle associazioni che rappresentano i commercianti e le imprese.

Il documento approvato dal consiglio dei ministri definisce inderogabile l’avvio dei preparativi per la costruzione di un nuovo blocco sia a Temelín che a Dukovany, con la possibilità di estendere il progetto di espansione a due nuovi blocchi in entrambe le centrali. Il Piano si ricollega alla Strategia energetica nazionale, attualizzata dal governo due settimane prima,

dove si prevede che l’atomo sarà la principale fonte di energia ceca nei prossimi decenni.

La maggioranza dei cechi secondo sondaggi è favorevole.

Per lo storico produttore di calzature si tratta di un ritorno a un tipo accessorio di business che già praticava durante gli anni della Prima repubblica cecoslovacca. La società garantisce che avviene in modo automatico e sicuro, perché la rete privata non viene utilizzata.

Il gruppo energetico e industriale ceco sigla con E.On il contratto relativo all’acquisto degli asset di generazione elettrica a carbone e a gas della multinazionale tedesca in Italia. Ep Produzione è la società, interamente controllata da Eph, che gestirà le attività italiane. L’accordo fa seguito all’operazione annunciata lo scorso 12 gennaio e all’approvazione della Commissione Ue nel mese di maggio. L’intesa prevede il trasferimento di una capacità di generazione complessiva pari a circa 4.500 megawatt.

Il rating attribuito è A1 con outlook stabile. La situazione finanziaria del paese è destinata con ogni probabilità a rimanere positiva nel corso di quest’anno e del prossimo, grazie a prudente politica fiscale. L’agenzia sottolinea il momento di forte ripresa della economia ceca.

Lo scorso anno ha avuto un valore complessivo di 11,6 miliardi di corone, quindi 3,75 miliardi in più rispetto al 2013. I mercati stranieri principali sono stati l’Arabia saudita (1,9 miliardi), la Germania (più di un miliardo), l’Algeria e gli Stati Uniti (quasi 900 milioni).

Si tratta di uno dei primi paesi del mondo dove il governo può utilizzare lo strumento dei tassi negativi per finanziarsi.

“E’ una ulteriore conferma della percezione positiva che la Repubblica ceca suscita nei mercati finanziari” è il commento del ministro delle Finanze Andrej Babiš.

Nel 2017 o nel 2018 la Corsa rosa potrebbe partire dalla Repubblica Ceca e far tappa anche in Slovacchia. All’idea sta lavorando Václav Klaus junior, il figlio dell’ex Presidente, il quale la scorsa primavera ha invitato a Praga il direttore del Giro Mauro Vegni per parlargliene.

Calcio ceco in lutto per la scomparsa, all’età di 84 anni, di Josef Masopust, Pallone d’oro e vicecampione del mondo nel 1962, alla guida della grande Cecoslovacchia e del Dukla Praha, considerato uno dei più grandi centrocampisti della storia del calcio. Funerali con gli onori militari a Praga, allo stadio del Dukla.

All’età di 106 anni scompare l’eroico cittadino britannico che alla vigilia dello scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale salvò più di 600 bambini ebrei cecoslovacchi dalla furia nazista, organizzandone il trasferimento in Inghilterra.

Fu proprio il 1° luglio del 1939 che dalla Hlavní nádraží di Praga partì il convoglio con il più elevato numero di bambini, tutti poi ospitati da famiglie britanniche. Si pensa all’ipotesi di intitolare a Winton la Stazione centrale della Capitale.

Al Centro Ceco di Praga una mostra fotografica pre‑ senta in 43 immagini gli anni di presidenza di Václav Havel dal 1993 al 2000. Gli scatti sono di Jiří Jírů, che per sette anni lavorò a stretto contatto con Havel come fotografo ufficiale e i cui oltre tremila negativi sono custoditi nell’archivio del Castello. Le immagini esposte sono create con la tecnica che Jírů chiamò hint-tint, che consiste nel colorare manualmente immagini in bianco e nero. Alcune sono inedite, al‑ tre già note poiché oggetto di precedenti esposizioni o inserite nel libro “Havel”. L’opera, con introduzione del regista Miloš Forman, nel 2008 ha vinto il Premio Orvieto Fotografia nella categoria Libro storico. Nel 2016, quando Havel avrebbe compiuto ottant’anni, la mostra farà tappa in vari Centri cechi all’estero. prague.czechcentres.cz

Il Museo Kampa, sull’omonima isola praghese, ha inau‑ gurato una retrospettiva su Marie Čermínová, meglio nota come Toyen. Inserito nella lista delle dieci gallerie più belle e meno conosciute d’Europa dal quotidiano inglese The Guardian, ha allestito quest’esposizione per il compleanno della sua fondatrice Meda Mládková, che conobbe personalmente l’artista ceco-francese. In mostra una selezione rappresentativa dell’opera di To‑ yen, dalla prima permanenza a Parigi negli anni venti al soggiorno parigino del dopoguerra. Non mancano esempi del duo formato con il pittore ceco Jindřich Štýrský, con cui fondò il Gruppo surrealista cecoslo‑ vacco nel 1934, capolavori come La dormiente e opere mai esposte. Alla Galleria Robert Guttmann del Museo Ebraico di Pra‑ ga è in corso la mostra “Immagini perdute” (The Missing Images), esposizione dedicata al fenomeno degli ebrei che fra il 1880 e il 1934 fuggirono dall’Europa orientale verso l’America. Tappa fondamentale del loro viaggio fu il porto di Anversa, da dove la compagnia di navigazione Red Star Line nel corso di mezzo secolo imbarcò tre mi‑ lioni di migranti europei diretti al Nuovo mondo. Il pitto‑ re belga Eugeen van Mieghem, testimone degli eventi, fissò sulla tela l’esodo di massa. Accanto a cinquanta sue opere, la mostra propone i manifesti della Red Star Line e fotografie d’epoca del porto. A photo exhibition will be held at the Prague Czech Centre with 43 images of the presidency of Václav Havel from 1993 to 2000. The photos were taken by Jiří Jírů, who worked closely with Havel for seven years as the official photographer and whose more than three thousand negatives are kept at the Castle. The exhibited images were created with a technique defined by Jírů as hint-tint, which consists of coloring manually the images in black and white. A number of them have never actually been published, while a few others are already known to the public, because they were the subject of previous exhibitions or included in the book “Havel”. The artistic work, with an introduction by director Miloš Forman, won the Orvieto Photography prize in the Historic Book category - in 2008. In 2016 (when Havel would have been eighty years old) the exhibition will take place in various Czech Centers abroad. prague.czechcentres.cz

The Kampa museum, on the homonymous Prague island, has inaugurated a retrospective of Marie Čermínová, better known as Toyen. Rated as one of the ten most beautiful and less known galleries in Europe, according to the British newspaper The Guardian, it has organized this exhibition to commemorate the birthday of its founder Meda Mládková, who was personally acquainted with the Czech-French artist.

The exhibition shows a representative selection of Toyen’s work, from her first stay in Paris in the twenties, to her later period in Paris after the war. There are also several examples of her duo with the Czech painter Jindřich Štýrský, with whom she founded the Czechoslovak Surrealist Group in 1934, with masterpieces, such as Sleeping and other works that have never been exhibited. On display at the Robert Guttmann Gallery of the Jewish Museum in Prague is “The Missing Images”, the exhibition dedicated to the phenomenon of the Jews, who fled from Eastern Europe to America between 1880 and 1934. A fundamental stopping place of their journey was the port of Antwerp, from where the Red Star Line shipping company - in the course of half a century - took on board three million European migrants headed towards the New World. The Belgian painter Eugeen van Mieghem, who witnessed the events, fixed the mass Exodus on canvas. Next to his fifty painting, the exhibition displays posters of the Red Star Line and old photographs of the port.

The Cam, Casoria Contemporary Art Museum is expanding the NetCam network in the Czech Republic, that connects museums, galleries and cultural institutions around the world, organizes exhibitions and workshops, acts as a meeting place to promote collaborations between artists. The CzeCAM project will be presented at the Italian Cultural Institute in Prague, under the auspices of the Italian Embassy, with three days of conferences and debates - open to professionals and the general public. Antonio Manfredi, the director of the museum and the artists Alma Idrizi and Chris Herdel put forward a reflection on the survival of art during a phase of economic crisis, by analyzing contemporary art in relation to European tradition and aniconic trend, presenting the current exponents of abstract art. www.casoriacontemporaryartmuseum.com

In 2015, the year of Hus, various initiatives have been set up to commemorate the Bohemian reformer and martyr Jan Hus, accused of being a heretic and burned at the stake on July 6 1415. After the official commemoration at the beginning of July, the Prague City Museum and a number of other institutions have celebrated him with an exhibition at Clam-Gallas Palace, a key figure for his theological and educational ideas and whose death led to an independent church from Rome. Hus carried out his activity in the capital, that at the time was the political and cultural metropolis of the empire and the scene of the Hussite revolution, and at the University of Prague, where he was rector in 1409-1410. Documents relating to the expansion of his doctrine in Bohemia and abroad, as well as works of art and books, are proof of the importance of the Hussite tradition during the six centuries of its history. www.muzeumprahy.cz

On the last Saturday of September, Průhonice Castle, the Renaissance palace on the outskirts of Prague, is the setting for an Italian Day, an event organized by the Italian Embassy in Prague with the support of the Conference Center of the Castle, the Italian Institute of Culture and the Italian-Czech Chamber of Commerce.

The program ranges from the “Parallel” photo exhibition by Pavel Kopp to the “Small Market of Italian products” with tastings. The opening ceremony will take place in the Knights’ Hall, which will also include a concert by the Jazz Trio, whilst an afternoon of entertainment for children will be held at the Belvedere, including an introduction to the Italian language. Interesting places to see are the park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the botanical garden. “Era la primavera del 70, una delizio‑ sa primavera romana. Mi arrivò una lettera asciutta, scritta in una carta grigiastra, poche righe stringate. Mi comunicava che “...il popolo della Ceco‑ slovacchia ha già speso abbastanza per i suoi studi all’estero” e mi invitava a un rientro immediato a Praga. Erano i pri‑ mi effetti della “normalizzazione” im‑ posta dai russi. Mi ero informato, avevo dei sospetti... Capivo che dietro quella lettera c’era ben altro, ero certo che mi avrebbero punito, una volta rientrato in patria, per le mie “deviazioni borghesi”, per i miei soggiorni italiani giudicati sospetti: così, decisi, pur con qualche timore, di restarmene a Roma”.

“It was the spring of 1970, a delightful Roman Spring. A dry letter arrived, written on greyish paper, a few concise lines.

It stated that “ ...the Czechoslovakian people have already spent enough on their studies abroad” and they invited me to return immediately to Prague...

They were the first effects of the “normalization” imposed by the Russians... I was informed, I suspected. I understood that there was something else behind that letter, I was certain that they would have punished me, once back at home, for my “bourgeois deviation” for my Italian stays judged to be suspicious, so I decided, though with some fear, just to stay in Rome.”

He seems amused, Josef Kašpar, to tell this 50 year-old anecdote. A seemingly marginal newsflash, but it explains part of his experience as a “historic”

journalist, today we would say a dean of foreign correspondents in Italy. Half a century on the Tiber, in ‘76, even the Roman passport arrived. Thus Kašpar is undoubtedly a great journalist, writer and translator, but he is also something else. He could be defined, (it does not sound like a weird definition) as a

“mediator” between Rome and Prague, in the sense that through newspapers, television, essays, and interviews he explains the Italian mentality to Czechs and the Czech mentality to Italians.

Un flash in apparenza marginale, ma spiega parte della sua esperienza di giornalista “storico”, oggi si direbbe decano, dei corrispondenti stranie‑ ri in Italia. Mezzo secolo sul Tevere, nel ‘76 arrivò anche il passaporto di Roma. Dunque Kašpar è sicuramen‑ te un ottimo giornalista, scrittore e traduttore, ma è anche qualcos’altro.

Lo si potrebbe definire, (non sembri definizione bizzarra) un “mediatore

culturale” fra Roma e Praga: nel senso che attraverso giornali, televisione, saggi, interviste spiega ai cechi la mentalità italiana, e agli italiani la mentalità ceca.

“Prendiamo il caso recente degli sbar‑ chi di clandestini sulle coste siciliane e non solo – chiarisce Kašpar – Sulle testate praghesi sono apparse notizie apocalittiche: si consigliava addirittu‑ ra ai nostri turisti di non frequentare città e spiagge della penisola. Ho cer‑ cato di spiegare su “Česká Televize”, la

tivù nazionale, la verità dei fatti: veni‑ te tranquilli, non c’è nessun pericolo.

Dico questo perché, ancora oggi, gli equivoci sono facili e c’è sempre qual‑ cuno che soffia sul fuoco.”

– Insomma, i cechi non capiscono la realtà italiana?

“Non è esattamente così. Direi che la interpretano a modo loro. Poi, certo, ci sono i luoghi comuni sugli italiani fannulloni, sulla burocrazia kafkiana che regna a Roma, eccetera. Ma pen‑ so che oggi, soprattutto fra le giovani

clarifies. “In the Prague headlines apocalyptic news appeared: even our tourists were advised not to attend the cities and beaches of the peninsula. I tried to explain on “Česka Televize”, the national TV channel, the truth of the facts: come and

don’t worry, there’s no danger. I say this because, even today, misinterpretation is easy, and there is always someone who adds fuel to the flames...”.

– So, basically Czechs do not understand the Italian reality?

“Not exactly. I would say that they interpret it in their own way. Then, of course, there are the cliches about Italian loafers, the Kafkaesque bureaucracy that reigns in Rome, and so on.

But I think today, especially among the

generazioni, prevalga l’ammirazio‑ ne per l’Italian style. Che non è solo l’eleganza di possedere una fuoriserie Ferrari o di un vestito di Valentino. No, è proprio l’ammirazione per il modo italiano di prendere la vita, di saper vivere. Senza contare il buon nome dell’industria italiana.”

– Ammirazione per l’Italia. Eppure, i cechi sono considerati molto vicini alla cosiddetta “linea dura”, quella seguita dai tedeschi verso i paesi mediterranei...

“Innanzitutto, siamo un paese dell’Unione, ma non siamo (o non siamo ancora) un paese dell’Eurozona.

Quindi le posizioni tedesche ci riguar‑ dano da un punto di vista politico, certamente. Un po’ meno, io credo, da quello monetario. L’adesione all’Unio‑ ne da parte di Praga è stata molto meno sentimentale di quel che si può credere ad ovest. Entrare nell’Europa unita è stata vista come una possibili‑ tà, una chance per migliorare il livello strutturale del paese. Poi, gradual‑ mente, anche i cechi hanno capito che si trattava di un’occasione limitata: bisognava fare i conti con gli eurocrati di Bruxelles, i regolamenti, le quote latte, le direttive e via elencando. E’ younger generations, the admiration for Italian style prevails. That is not just the elegance of owning a custombuilt Ferrari or a Valentino dress. No, it is the admiration for the Italian way of approaching life, knowing how to live, not to mention the good name of the Italian industry“.

– Admiration for Italy. Yet, the Czechs are considered very close to the so-called “hard-line”, the one followed by the Germans towards Mediterranean countries ...

“First of all, we are a country of the Union, but we are not (or are not yet) a Eurozone country. So the German positions affect us from a political point of view, certainly. A little less, I believe, from a monetary point of view. The acceptance in to the Union of Prague was far less sentimental than what may be believed

– Però sull’integrazione dei profughi africani o mediorientali nei nostri paesi, anche la sinistra ceca appare molto restrittiva. Su posizioni quasi “xenofobe”. Rinascono vecchi fantasmi?

in the west. Joining a united Europe was seen as an opportunity, a chance to improve the structural level of the country.

Then, gradually, the Czechs also realized that it was a limited opportunity. It was necessary to reckon with the Eurocrats of Brussels, regulations, milk quotas, directives and so forth ... A sort of “democratic disillusion” followed... it was understood that it was a “condominium” still guided by the greats of the Continent ...”.

– And therefore?

“And therefore, we might as well believe in the Union, but with prudence, and without too much enthusiasm ...”.

– However, regarding the integration of refugees from Africa or the Middle East in our country, even the Czech left appears to be very restrictive. The positions seem almost “xenophobic”. Are old ghosts reappearing?

“The media, not just in Prague, created a psychosis about refugees. In particular those of Arab descent. A proclaimed drama that does not really exist: the boat people get confused with Islamic terrorists, desperate job seekers with potential killers. The fear of others is combined with the historical insecurity”.

– Will we return to the Europe of the people against the bureaucrats?

We avoid the banality, but there is a grain of truth even in the slogans. Personally, I consider myself a “European social-democrat”, and I still don’t believe that the entire German population share the positions of Angela Merkel and Wolfgang Schäuble. The Germans have a sense of supremacy, not of cultural hegemony. It is a subtle but important distinction, however, Americans have understood very well.

– Meaning?

“Evitiamo le banalità, ma c’è un briciolo di vero anche negli slogan. Personal‑ mente, mi considero un “socialdemocra‑ tico europeo”, e continuo a non credere che tutto il popolo tedesco condivida le posizioni di Angela Merkel o di Wolf‑ gang Schäuble. I tedeschi hanno il senso

del dominio, non quello dell’egemonia culturale. È una distinzione importan‑ te ma sottile che, invece, gli americani hanno capito benissimo”.

– Cioè?

“Intendo dire che tutti apprezzano le automobili tedesche, la solidità del‑ la loro democrazia, le loro capacità organizzative, ma i tedeschi non po‑ tranno mai irradiare quell’attrazione culturale che gli americani hanno esercitato con la loro musica, i film di Hollywood, vestire casual e tante altre cose di cui è stata impregnata la nostra vita, almeno dal 1945. C’è un altro fenomeno che mi dà fastidio: il

ritorno dei luoghi comuni e pregiudi‑ zi. Un conto è criticare la Merkel, altra cosa è prendersela contro il popolo te‑ desco. E lo stesso vale per i greci, per gli italiani e per tutti gli altri. Come se qualcuno avesse dimenticato gli erro‑ ri e gli orrori del passato”.

– Mezzo secolo in Italia. La domanda sorge spontanea: ce la faremo?

“L’Italia ha sempre dato il meglio di sé nelle situazioni difficili. È un paese ferito, ma penso che supererà anche questa crisi economica e sociale deva‑ stante. C’è un prezzo da pagare, è chia‑ ro: nel 2014, mezzo milione di italiani ha lasciato la Penisola. E non si tratta di

– La Penisola come periferia dell’Impero tedesco? (ride..) “Io vedo un pericolo diverso.

Certo, esiste oggi un’egemonia tede‑ sca, che non pagano solo gli italiani.

Ma il pericolo maggiore lo vedo piut‑ tosto nell’allontanarsi rapido delle due Italie, nella forbice sempre più larga fra Nord e Sud. C’è un abisso fra un abitante di Trento e, per dire, uno di Caserta. Un abisso nei servizi, nell’efficienza dello Stato, nel livello culturale. Un dato che si percepi‑ sce anche semplicemente restando a Roma per una settimana”.

– Non abbiamo parlato di Russia... o forse bisognerebbe scrivere ancora Urss?

“Di Putin e del suo modo di governa‑ re non ho alcuna simpatia, ma penso sia stato inutile e controproducente umiliare la Russia nel corso degli ul‑ timi decenni come hanno fatto alcuni ambienti americani. E poi non dimen‑ tichiamo il passato: dopo il crollo co‑ munista dell’89, le truppe sovietiche hanno abbandonato senza sparare un colpo la Ddr, la Cecoslovacchia, la Polonia, l’Ungheria. Insieme eroe e anti-eroe, è un patriottico leader dell’anti-nazionalismo, il mistero buffo della Mitteleuropa.

Il punto: la vecchia Cecoslovacchia, prima ancora di divenire Cecoslovac‑ chia, poté contare su un cittadino straordinario. Il più grande uomo della piccola nazione possedeva in sé le doti di filosofo, inventore, archi‑ tetto, musicista, esploratore, pittore, il tutto coordinato da un’indomita ribellione al potere: quello asburgi‑ co, ufficialmente (quello comunista, ufficiosamente). Il suo nome era Jára Cimrman, ed è esistito per metà.

I più scettici insisteranno col dire che fu una mera invenzione artistica, un perso‑ naggio teatrale; sottolineeranno come non esistano notizie della sua vita sino al 1966, ovvero quasi cinquant’anni dopo la sua (presunta) morte. Eppure per molti la figura è più che parte integran‑ te della tradizione del paese, altrimenti come si spiegherebbe la netta vittoria di Cimrman ad un celebre show televisivo

Dressed in white, in the middle of a small wooden gazebo in the middle of a forest, an elegant and mustachioed gentleman focuses on a manuscript. Off-screen, a voice asks “what are you working on, Mr. Chekhov?”. “I am writing “The Two Sisters”,” proudly replies the writer. The man, now appearing in full screen, immediately answers back: “Aren’t they too few, Anton Pavlović?”.

Writing about Jára Cimrman, the mysterious talent who among his thousand discoveries also managed to suggest to Chekhov the title of his masterpiece (“The Three Sisters”), is not easy. We approach the character cautiously, on tiptoes, peering secretly at an exclusively Czech phenomenon which becomes elusive, at times incomprehensible, for a foreigner. Both hero and anti-hero, he is a patriotic leader of anti-nationalism, the daft mystery of Central Europe.

The theme: the old Czechoslovakia, before becoming Czechoslovakia, could count on an extraordinary citizen. The greatest man in the small nation possessed the inborn talent of a philosopher, an inventor, an architect, a musician, an explorer, a painter, all coordinated by an indomitable rebellion against the power; namely Habsburg, at least officially (communism, unofficially). His name was Jára Cimrman, and he half-existed.

Most skeptics insist on saying that he was merely an artistic invention, a theatrical character, and will emphasize that there is no news of his life until 1966, that is nearly fifty years after his (supposed) death. Yet for many, the figure is more than an integral part of the tradition of the country, otherwise how else can you explain the clear victory of Cimrman in a famous 2005 TV show, “The Greatest Czech in history?”

Andiamo per ordine. Nel 1966 gli ascoltatori del programma radio “All’enoteca analcolica “Al ragno”” incontrarono per la prima volta Ci‑ mrman, caricatura del cecoslovacco medio con buona dose di non-sense

(come un’enoteca analcolica richie‑ de). Gli autori, Zdeněk Svěrák e Jíři Šebánek, lo indicarono come un di‑ menticato genio del passato, vissuto tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e la Prima Guerra Mondiale, ultime decadi dell’Impero. Let’s go in order. In 1966, listeners of the radio program “The Non-Alcoholic Wine Bar chez Spider” first came across Cimrman, a caricature of the average Czechoslovak with a high dose of nonsense (as a non-alcoholic wine shop would require). The authors, Zdeněk Svěrák and Jíři Šebánek, claimed him to be a forgotten genius of the past, who lived between the second half of the nineteenth century and the First World War, the last decades of the empire. Together with playwrights Ladislav Smoljak and

Miloň Čepelka, the following year they found a theatre company, whose first play, Akt (Nude), was obviously credited as being by Jára Cimrman.

The first in a long series of works (16), Akt presents a structure reproposed in each subsequent work: one half dedicated to theatre (a painter meets the children he had left “in order not to lose his creative streak”), and the other half to a lecture on the teachings of Cimrman, held by the same actors in the roles of “Cimrmanologists”. Puns, references to traditional attitudes regarding the regime, pure

comedy linked to satirical digs, the Cimrman theatre became cult already in the seventies. Over time he led his audience through diverse adventures, from Africa to the North Pole (which the Czechs almost reached before anyone else: they were just 7 meters short, it was told). In 1983, Ladislav Smoljak directed the film, “Jára Cimrman ležicí, Spící”(Jára Cimrman, lying, sleeping) starring Zdeněk Svěrák as the protagonist, a film which among other things, contains the episode with which we opened this article. The history of the burlesque character is told in episodes, from his childhood in Prague to great near inventions that slipped away, right up to the period when he was tutor to the children of the Emperor Franz Joseph (to whom he taught Bohemian independence songs). The film, a big success in its homeland, has also circulated with English subtitles and for a long time remained one of the few

His reputation has struggled to catch on across the border, but small and lasting attempts exist since some time.

The American Bohemist Craig Cravens organizes and directs Cimrman plays with his Czech language students at the University of Austin, Texas. Professor Cravens, who calls himself a fullfledged American cimrmanologist, flies to Brno every summer to prepare the theatre at the Czech summer school of Masaryk University.

To this day, the Žižkovské Divadlo Járy Cimrmana (since 1992 the theatre has been set up in the Prague district of Žižkov) continues to work at full capacity, even after the sad loss of Ladislav Smoljak in 2010. Recently performances were organized in English, attempting (very efficiently, based on the packed theatre hall) to stem the difficulties of the thousands of puns. Since 2002 it has been

possible also to visit a small museum dedicated to Cimrman under the Petřin tower, a stone’s throw from Prague Castle. The plaque of the exhibition states: “Exhibition of Jára Cimrman, the genius that didn’t become famous.”

The story of the character himself is all relative, however, to learn about the

phenomenon we need another perspective; the public’s. The setting is a hospoda, a traditional Czech tavern where rivers of beer have always irrigated the nation. We have chosen two guests as an introduction to the subject now known as Cimrmanology.

They are in fact a couple, consisting of

La storia del personaggio in sé è tutta‑ via relativa, per conoscere il fenomeno abbiamo bisogno di un’altra prospet‑ tiva: quella del pubblico. La cornice è quella di una hospoda, tradizionale osteria ceca in cui fiumi di birra irrigano da sempre la nazione. Scegliamo due ospiti per un’introduzione alla materia ormai nota come Cimrmanologia: una coppia, lei è Blažena, bionda e morava, lui è Enrique, spagnolo di Guadalajara, studioso di lingua e letteratura ceca.

L’attacco di Enrique va dritto al punto: “Cimrman è lo specchio nel quale si ammira tutto ciò che si sente ceco (a tal punto che, quando voglio valutare se qualcosa sia puramente ceca, la cer‑ co nelle opere di Cimrman)”, il giusto tocco d’ironia, prima di farsi più serio: “È il prodotto di una nazione che per sentirsi viva ha bisogno di relazionarsi continuamente ai propri vicini, al cui confronto si sente piccola e infelice.

Eppure in questa ricerca di una propria narrazione epica, trova le sue carte speciali: Švejk, la birra, la natura, il suo black humour. Tutto viene relati‑ vizzato, non c’è più il bianco o il nero, Blažena, blonde and Moravian, and Enrique, a spaniard from Guadalajara, and student of Czech language and literature. The attack from Enrique gets straight to the point: “Cimrman is the mirror in which you admire everything that makes you feel Czech (to the point that, when I want to measure whether something is purely Czech, I look for it in the works of Cimrman)”, using the right dose of irony, before getting more serious. “It is the product of a nation that to feel alive needs to compare constantly to its neighbours, in comparison with which you feel small and unhappy. Yet it is in this search for its own epic narrative, where it finds its aces: Švejk, beer, nature, its black humour. Everything is normalised, there is no white or black, there are no heroes, not even Cimrman is one”. We therefore imagine a nation in search of glory, who decides as game, to put one of her son on the top of the world, and from there to realise that this

whole climb is nothing but a joke. And the Czechs, the small great nation, continue to fill up Žižkovské Divadlo in order to laugh at it. On this note, Blažena can conclude that “Cimrman is the personification of all that could have been and was not (inventor, poet, philosopher) and at the same time the evidence that it could have been worse, so that you just have nothing better to do than take life calmly and go have a beer”. Chi scrive ricorda di una serata diplomatica a Bruxelles presso la rap‑ presentanza ceca all’Unione Europea; all’ingresso dell’edificio, i visitatori erano accolti da una targa dedicata a Jára Cimrman, il quale lasciò trac‑ cia di sé anche all’Expo Universale di Bruxelles del 1910 (l’impronta di un piede, per essere precisi). “Solo i cechi potevano dedicare una sede diploma‑ tica ad un personaggio inventato!”fu il commento in falso disappunto di un ufficiale ceco delle Nazioni Unite.

tiche e satiriche” puntualizza il nostro nuovo ospite dell’hospoda, Ondřej, trentenne ricercatore in biochimica presso l’Accademia delle Scienze della Repubblica Ceca. “Il mio rapporto è cambiato col tempo: da piccolo mi faceva ridere e basta. Ma crescendo, conoscendo meglio le opere e so‑ prattutto la storia e la cultura ceca, mi sono reso conto della profondità e dell’eleganza con le quali sono riusciti a far ridere per generazioni. Era una forma di resistenza, una fine presa in giro del potere, e penso che per la gente andare ai suoi spettacoli era sentirsi parte di una “piccola ribellio‑ ne”. Dopo la Rivoluzione sono riusciti a cambiare bersaglio, non più lo Stato ma la personalità dell’eterna peri‑ feria, la “maloměšťáctvi” del tipico ceco”. Rimane sempre una storia stra‑ ordinaria e alla gente “piace sognare”, ricorda Ondřej, anche quando sa che si tratta di una stupidaggine. Un le‑ game benevolo che rimane persino nell’uomo di scienza, il quale infine ci confida: “A volte mi trovo a pensare: forse è esistito davvero”!

As a child it made me laugh and that was all. But growing up, after getting to better know the work and above all Czech history and culture, I realized the depth and elegance with which they managed provoke laughter for generations. It was a form of resistance, a refined mockery of power, and I think that for the people, going to his shows felt like being part of a “little rebellion”.

After the Revolution they were able to switch targets, no longer the State, but the personality of the eternal suburbs, the “maloměšťáctvi” of the typical Czech”. There is always an extraordinary story, and people “like to dream”, recalls Ondřej, even if they know that it is nonsense. L’antica storia del tessile ceco Dalle prime manifatture nella seconda metà del Settecento al repentino sviluppo con la rivoluzione industriale. Le grandi famiglie di imprenditori tessili che fecero di Brno una capitale mondiale del tessile

“Brno, la Manchester morava”, con que‑ sto nome nell’Ottocento la città veniva paragonata alla metropoli inglese per la produzione laniera di ottima qualità.

Lo stesso appellativo è stato il titolo di una mostra, svoltasi quest’anno al Museo artistico industriale di Brno, che ripercorreva i 250 anni dell’industria

tessile. Presentava le più importanti aziende, tra cui Vlněna e Mosilana, e i loro proprietari, quei ricchi imprendi‑ tori che nel 1873 fondarono lo stesso Museo e le cui ville arricchirono la città di gioielli architettonici.

Fino a metà Novecento soprabiti e cappotti di lana erano i capi più dif‑

fusi del guardaroba. La lavorazione di questo materiale era già nota nel medioevo ma solo nella seconda metà del Settecento apparvero le manifat‑ ture tessili ceche. La prima fu aperta nel 1763 dal commerciante Johann Leopold Köffiller che fece costruire una colonia operaia circostante e sfruttò le

The ancient history of the Czech textile industry conoscenze tecniche di specialisti chia‑ mati dalla Germania. Uno di essi era Johann Heinrich Offermann che dopo dieci anni al laboratorio di Köffiller, nel 1786 avviò il proprio lanificio. La sua figura ha ispirato il libro Fabrika della scrittrice Kateřina Tučková, pubblicato in occasione della mostra.

Queste due manifatture furono le prime di una lunga serie. Al repentino sviluppo contribuirono a fine secolo la crescente richiesta di tessuti, l’abo‑ lizione della servitù della gleba che si tradusse in un’enorme quantità di forza lavoro ma soprattutto il blocco continentale attuato da Napoleone nel 1806 che per otto anni mise fuori gioco la concorrenza inglese.

La meccanizzazione del settore In tre decenni Brno divenne veramente la “Manchester morava”, principale cen‑

tro laniero della monarchia austro-un‑ garica, e fino agli anni ‘30 del Novecento motore dell’intera economia ceca.

Parte del merito va all’introduzione delle macchine, cui è legata un’azione di spio‑ naggio industriale. I modelli non a caso arrivano da Manchester, dove l’aristocra‑ tico e scienziato moravo Hugo František Salm-Reifferscheidt nel 1808 fu assunto come operaio, in incognito. Studiò la macchina a vapore, il telaio meccanico e altre novità dell’epoca e tornò in patria con una gran quantità di schizzi.

but it was only in the second half of the eighteenth century, when the Czech textile factories appeared. The first was opened in 1763 by the merchant Johann Leopold Köffiller who built a surrounding community of workers and exploited the technical expertise of

specialists called over from Germany.

One of them was Johann Heinrich Offermann who after ten years at the Köffiller workshop, started his own woolen mill in 1786. His figure inspired the book Fabrika by the writer Kateřina Tučková, published for the exhibition.

These two factories were the first in a long line. What contributed to the rapid development at the end of the century was the growing demand for textiles, and the abolition of serfdom which resulted in an enormous amount of labour, but also the continental block-

Si specializzò inoltre in uniformi militari da forni‑ re agli eserciti serbo, rumeno, turco, egiziano e greco. Una famiglia “di persone capaci che non si distingue‑ vano solo per intelligenza, creatività e intraprendenza ma anche per la loro mentalità patriottica verso Brno e per le numerose iniziative altruiste”, così li descrive l’autrice Kateřina Tučková.

Karl fondò infatti il parco Lužánky, ma soprattutto non dimenticò gli operai, ordinò nuovi caseggiati e introdusse servizi all’epoca inusuali, un fondo sa‑ nitario e uno di sostegno. Non man‑ cavano infatti scioperi per denunciare le dure condizioni di lavoro o la paura d’essere sostituiti dalle macchine.

The mechanization of the sector In three decades Brno truly became the “Moravian Manchester”, the main wool centre of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and until the 1930s the motor of the entire Czech economy.

Part of the credit goes to the introduction of the machines, which is linked to an example of ‘industrial espionage’.

In rapida successione si costruirono fabbriche, case, nuove vie e quartieri” che trasfor‑ marono Brno in una moderna metro‑ poli. Apparvero anche le sontuose ville degli industriali, come quella funziona‑ lista della famiglia Stiassni o quella in stile liberty di Alfred Löw-Beer, padre di Greta Tugendhat, proprietaria della più nota Villa Tugendhat.

Quando nacque la Cecoslovacchia, nel 1918, sul territorio era presente l’80%

delle tessiture dell’impero asburgico ma lo spazio per la vendita del pro‑ dotto finito si era notevolmente ridot‑ to. L’export divenne fondamentale e la qualità ceca non ebbe problemi nel competere con i concorrenti britanni‑ ci. Capitava anzi che alle stoffe, riven‑ dute in patria e all’estero, venisse at‑ taccato il marchio “Made in England”.

La nazionalizzazione e inizio del declino Un freno fu posto dalla seconda guer‑ ra mondiale. Già con l’occupazione tedesca del 1938, le grandi famiglie

d’industriali di origine ebraica lascia‑ rono il paese, per esempio gli Stiassni e i Tugendhat. Nel 1945 l’insufficienza di forza lavoro qualificata fu rafforzata dall’espulsione tedesca dalla zona dei Sudeti. Tutte le imprese confiscate a proprietari tedeschi ed ebrei furono na‑ zionalizzate e riunite in una quarantina di aziende statali. Le più note erano Mosilana e Vlněna, entrambe lanifici.

Sui 9mila operai tessili di Brno, 7mila erano impiegati nel settore laniero.

of the time, and returned home with a huge number of sketches.

In 1851 it was Karl Offermann, the son of the founder, who installed the first mechanical looms in Moravia. He specialized also in military uniforms to be supplied to the armies of Serbia, Romania, Turkey, Greece and Egypt. A family “of capable people who stood out not only for intelligence, creativity and resourcefulness, but also for their patriotic mentality towards Brno, and numerous initiatives of unselfishness”, as the author Kateřina Tučková describes them. Karl in fact founded the Lužánky Park, but also did not forget the workers, ordering new apartment blocks, and introduced unusual services for the time, a health fund and one for support. In fact, there was no

lack of strikes denouncing the harsh working conditions or the fear of being replaced by machines.

The transition from craft production to the vast scale and development of the mechanical and chemical industries, related to the textile branch, were accompanied by the construction boom.

“The industry left its signature on the character of the urbanization” says Tomáš Zapletal, one of the authors behind the aforementioned exhibition.

“Tens of thousands of people flooded into the city. In quick succession they built factories, houses, new streets and neighborhoods”, that turned Brno into a modern metropolis. The sumptuous villas of industrialists also appeared, such as the functionalist one of the Stiassni family or the Art Nouveau villa

of Alfred Löw-Beer, the father of Greta Tugendhat, owner of the more famous Villa Tugendhat.

When Czechoslovakia was born in 1918, in the territory 80% of the weaving mills of the Habsburg empire were present, but the space for the sale of the finished product had been considerably reduced.

Exports became essential and Czech quality had no problems in competing with its British competitors. As a matter of fact, it was frequent for fabrics, to be sold at home and abroad, with the “Made in England” label attached.

The nationalization and beginning of the decline A brake was set by World War II. Already with the German occupation of 1938, the great families of industrialists of Jewish origin left the country, for ex-

Nel 1989, anno di svolta per tutta l’economia ceca, il declino del tessi‑ le era già avviato. La Rivoluzione di Velluto, un nome che, per ironia del‑ la sorte, sembra fatto apposta per sconvolgere il settore tessile. Brno fu superata per numero di siti produt‑

tivi e dipendenti da Liberec, che fin dall’Ottocento era il secondo centro tessile del Paese e vanta una facol‑ tà tessile. Quest’ultima, assieme ad alcune aziende della regione, si è presentata in agosto al padiglione ceco di Expo. Nella cornice dei “Gior‑ ni del design” è anche stata allestita “Gocce di vita”, opera monumentale formata da tante gocce d’acqua cuci‑ te a mano, secondo la tradizione del merletto ceco.

La nuova era e gli investitori italiani I lanifici storici cedettero il passo a piccole aziende, non sopravvissero a deregolamentazione dei prezzi, libera‑ lizzazione del commercio estero e priva‑ tizzazione. Senza contare il costante calo di manodopera; superava i mille operai solo Mosilana, uno dei pochi esempi di privatizzazione riuscita nonché l’unica a portare avanti la tradizione laniera. Nel 1994 fu rilevata dal Gruppo Marzotto con il nome Nova Mosilana.

Da quel periodo cresce nel paese l’in‑ teresse degli investitori stranieri, cui spesso basta investire in nuovi mac‑ chinari e nella ricostruzione degli edi‑ fici. Nel 2012 Marzotto rilancia anche Sametex, orientata alla produzione di velluto. “Le maestranze del posto, e mi riferisco a Brno e zone limitrofe, hanno nei cromosomi un’innata passione per questo lavoro – dice il direttore gene‑

The major problem was the production capacity which exceeded the national demand which made Czechoslovakia a major exporter of textiles, boasting sixty states of every continent among its destinations, especially those close to the Soviet bloc.

In 1989, a year of change for the whole Czech economy, the decline of the textile industry had already started. The Velvet Revolution, despite the name, ironically seemed to upset the textile sector. Brno was overtaken by number of manufacturing facilities and employees from Liberec, which from the nineteenth century was the second

La manodopera qualificata, la minor tassazione, la buona posizione geogra‑ fica e il costo competitivo dell’energia hanno spinto altri industriali italiani a delocalizzare la produzione nel Paese.

Il Gruppo Tessile Monti, leader nella ca‑ miceria di lusso, ha dato vita a Monti Ce‑ kia, acquistando nel 2002 lo stabilimen‑ to di Borovnice e due anni più tardi il sito di Studenec ceduto da Texlen, azienda statale che lavorava il lino. In questo caso non si può parlare di un’antica tradizio‑ nalità, poiché la gestione precedente aveva un indirizzo diverso e il personale è quasi interamente straniero.

Di camiceria d’alta gamma si occupa anche il Cotonificio Albini con i due stabilimenti di Letohrad e Dvůr Králo‑ textile centre of the country and boasts a textile faculty. The latter, along with a few companies in the region, presented itself at the Czech pavilion at Expo in August. In the “Days of Design” frame, “Drops of life”, was also staged, a monumental work made up of many drops of water sewn by hand, all done in line with the Czech lace tradition.

The new era and Italian investors The historic woolen mills gave way to small businesses, and did not survive price deregulation, liberalization of foreign trade and privatization. Not to mention the steady decline of labour, with more than a thousand workmen only in Mosilana, one of the few examples of successful privatization and the only one to carry on the wool tradition. In 1994 it was taken over by the Marzotto Group with the name Nova Mosilana.

Since that time the interest of foreign investors in the country has grown, who often just invest in new machinery and the reconstruction of buildings. In 2012 Marzotto also relanched L’installazione Gocce di Vita / The installation Drops for Life

Sametex, dedicated to the production of velvet. “The workers of this place, and I mean in Brno and the surrounding areas, have an innate passion for this work in their chromosomes”, says the general manager Andrea Busolo.

“Some people leave our company after more than 40 years of work and this is a sign of attachment to the old tradition of textile manufacturers”.

Skilled labour, the lower taxes, the good geographical position and competitive cost of energy, have led other Italian industrialists to relocate production to the country.

The Monti Textile Group, a leader in luxury shirts, created Monti Cekia, after purchasing the establishment of Borovnice in 2002, and two years later the site of Studenec sold by Texlen, a state-owned company that was working on the linen. In this case one cannot speak of an ancient tradition, because the previous administration had a different address and the staff is almost entirely foreign.

La diretta causa è un import sempre più cospicuo di merci a buon mercato, perlopiù da Cina e Bangladesh.

It all depends on exports, but also on the creativity Only those who specialize in high quality products survive. The turnover of the textile and clothing sector grew in 2014 by 8.4%, to a total of 51 billion crowns, but since 2000 a reduction by two-thirds in the production, and the loss of 37,000 jobs has been reported. What unites the textile enterprises is the dependence on exports. The main buyer is Germany, in addition to being the leading supplier of raw materials, followed by Turkey, the US and Russia. Yet foreign trade has had a deficit since 2004. The deficit in 2014 reached a record level of 15.5 billion crowns, as noted by the Czech Office of Statistics. The direct cause is an increasingly large import of cheap goods, mostly from China and Bangladesh.

What remains of the great factories of the twentieth century are dozens of buildings in ruins, ready to make room for offices and residential complexes.

Following the trend of other European cities, many associations are fighting so that music and theatre reanimate unused sheds and empty warehouses become a place for meetings, exhibitions and events or a base where artists can devote themselves to their creations.

Beata Spáčilová and Světlana Kulíšková try to revive the art of sewing in an original workshop where anyone wants to sew will find whatever they need, from machines to cutting and sewing lessons, to advice from the owners. Světlana Kulíšková is wellknown for the creation of minimalist Art Protis tapestries and clothing, or non-woven fabric techniques, even to the extent that Calvin Klein has used her fabrics for a recent collection. Patented in Czechoslovakia in the 60s and based on the use of wool, Art Protis is the current legacy of the ancient textile art of past centuries.

It is still standing as seventy years ago: broken down walls, a bare concrete frame, an empty dome and a metal skeleton. When at 8.15am on August 6, 1945 the American bomber, Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan, the city of Hiroshima was pulverized into a catastrophic pile of rubble and bodies. Heritage of Humanity in 1996, under the protection of UNESCO. But the story, this story, has come thirty years too late for the man who conceived it, designed and built it: a Czech architect, born in the town of Náchod in north-eastern Bohemia in 1880.

However, few people remember who Jan Letzel was, a man who divided his life between the Austro-Hungarian

Dating back to that period is one of the few buildings Letzel designed and built while living in his home country: an Art-Nouveau style pavilion in the thermal town of Mšené-lázně. In que‑ sto edificio è evidente l’impronta rice‑ vuta da Kotěra all’accademia. Sempre a quegli anni (1904-1905) risale una sua collaborazione nella realizzazione dell’Hotel Europa di Praga.

Ma la fortuna personale e professio‑ nale di Letzel non aveva da farsi nella sua terra natale: nel 1905 è ancora in partenza, questa volta per Il Cairo in Egitto, dove passa quasi due anni. Ri‑ entra in patria nel 1907, non prima di avere fatto un “grand tour” delle più importanti città italiane: tra queste Roma, Milano e Venezia. Ma Letzel doveva, voleva andare più lontano.

Così l’anno del suo rientro a Praga è anche l’anno della sua partenza per l’Oriente, per il Giappone. Forte delle sue esperienze all’estero e delle com‑ petenze avanguardistiche respirate nell’allora Impero Austro-Ungarico, l’architetto ceco sbarca nella capitale giapponese con in testa e nelle mani uno stile moderno e occidentale.

But Letzel’s personal and professional fortune did not derive from his native land: in 1905, in fact, he embarked on a journey, but this time to Cairo in Egypt, where he spent almost two years. He came home in 1907, but not before taking a “grand tour” of the most important Italian cities: Rome, Milan and Venice. But Letzel wanted to go even farther away, so the year of his return to Prague, was also the year of his departure to the East and Japan. Thanks to his experience and expertise abroad and the avant-garde competences gained in the AustroHungarian Empire in that period, the Czech architect arrived in the Japanese capital with a modern and Western approach. At the time, in Japan, they used to build according to tradition.

razione professionale si forma con un altro architetto ceco sbarcato in Oriente, Karel Hora: i due decidono di mettersi in proprio aprendo il loro studio d’architettura. La loro maniera di costruire è totalmente estranea a quella locale, i due cechi propongo‑ no infatti grandi edifici in cemento

capaci di resistere ai terremoti che colpiscono ciclicamente quest’isola ad altissimo rischio sismico. Questo contribuisce al successo del loro stu‑ dio finché la strada dei due non si divide qualche anno più tardi. Letzel continuerà il percorso da solo, per altri dieci anni in terra giapponese,

wood and paper, whereas Letzel had learned to work with stone, cement and plaster. On his arrival in Tokyo, his first job was for a French architects studio. He worked there until 1910 and during those first years, he built up an important working relationship with another Czech architect who had also arrived in the East, Karel Hora: the two decided to start their own business by opening an architectural studio. Their construction systems were totally different from local ones, because the two Czechs designed large concrete buildings, which were more suitable to withstand the frequent earthquakes that hit the area, at high seismic risk.

This contributed to the success of the

firm, until they decided to split up a few years later. Letzel continued on his own in Japan for another ten years, building homes, schools, university pavilions, hospitals and hotels. But the most famous creation of all – even at the time of its construction – is the pavilion that used to house the Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall in Hiroshima: inaugurated on Aug. 5, 1915, the building was to maintain its majestic look for exactly thirty years and one day. Designed in Viennese style, it withstood the atomic explosion, because at the time, it was one of the few to be built with a solid concrete structure. Several years before the war, the pavilion was already quite fa-

mous in the town, and everyone knew it was the work of a Bohemian architect. Over time, however, the symbol overshadowed its creator. For the Czech architect instead, this pavilion represents the pinnacle of his career.

In 1914, in fact, with the outbreak of World War I, Letzel was obliged to return home. Three years later, following the foundation of Czechoslovakia, the new state offered him the post of commercial attaché at the Czech embassy in Tokyo. His stay in the Empire of the Rising Sun was to last a few more years, but the days of his best creations were now behind him. Tre anni più tardi, alla fondazione della Cecoslovacchia, il nuovo Stato gli of‑ frirà un posto di attaché commercia‑

Dopo due anni di malattia e di oblio quello che era stato un faro dell’architettu‑ ra occidentale in Oriente si spegne solo, dimenticato, in una casa di cura per malattie mentali di Praga, sulla Kateřinská ulice, e sepolto in modo anonimo nella sua Náchod.

Letzel non sapeva, non poteva sapere allora, che una delle sue creazioni sa‑ rebbe diventata il simbolo di un’epoca.

Ma questo è spesso il destino ingrato dei grandi artisti.

It was then that the architect and diplomat decided to return forever to his home country. Nevertheless, there remains little or nothing of these last Czech years. After two years of illness and oblivion, what had once been a beacon of Western architecture in the East, passed away, forgotten, in a clinic for the mentally ill in Prague, on Kateřinská ulice, buried anonymously in his home town Náchod.

Letzel didn’t know, and couldn’t know then, that one of his creations would one day become the symbol of an era.

But this is often the ungrateful fate of great artists.

“A Břevnov, di fronte alla mia ampia fi‑ nestra, subito dietro il minuscolo giar‑ dino, dall’autunno fino all’estate suc‑ cessiva, verdeggiava il frumento. Dietro il campo c’erano le cave abbandonate, d’estate piene di snelli verbaschi. Dietro le cave scendeva nella vallata una stra‑ da e dopo c’erano nuovamente i cam‑ pi, seguiti da un boschetto roccioso. A marzo, quando spalancavo la finestra e mi accostavo la poltrona, potevo ascol‑ tare le allodole come se fossi seduto in un palco del Teatro Nazionale”.

Con queste parole il poeta ceco Jaro‑ slav Seifert, premio Nobel per la Let‑ teratura nel 1984, descrive Břevnov, all’epoca della sua giovinezza, nel libro “Tutte le bellezze del mondo” del 1982.

Il quartiere di Břevnov si trova a po‑ che fermate di tram dal Castello di Praga, in direzione ovest, nel Distretto di Praga 6. Il paesaggio urbano, appe‑ na fuori dal centro storico e turistico, riassume quasi improvvisamente le fattezze tipiche della città fatta per la vita quotidiana dei suoi abitanti, con le sue attività e i suoi ritmi scanditi.

Ma più che un quartiere, Břevnov, sembra quasi un piccolo villaggio nel centro di Praga caratterizzato da una via centrale, la Bělohorská, sede del‑ le principali attività commerciali del sobborgo, che con i suoi oltre 4 chilo‑ metri di lunghezza unisce Malovanka con Bílá Hora, e molte vie secondarie con piccole palazzine e case interval‑ late tra loro da giardini e spazi verdi.

Scendiamo dal tram 22 a “U Kaštanu”, seconda fermata dopo “Marjánka” che è quella che segna la porta d’in‑ La Basilica di Santa Margherita nel monastero di Břevnov / gresso del quartiere. When in March, I opened the window and sat on my armchair staring out, I could hear the larks singing, just as if I were sitting in front of the stage at the National Theatre”.

It is with these words, that the Czech poet Jaroslav Seifert, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1984, describes Břevnov at the time of his youth, in the book of 1982 “All the beauties of the world”.

The district of Břevnov lies just a few tram stops from the Prague Castle, to the west, in the District of Prague 6. The ur-

ban landscape, just outside the historical and tourist centre, summarizes almost suddenly the typical features of the city, made for the daily life of its inhabitants, with its activities and rhythms. But rather than a district area, Břevnov seems more like a small village in the centre of Prague, consisting of a main street, Bělohorská – seat of the main commercial activities of the suburb – that, with its over 4 km length, connects Malovanka with Bílá Hora, and many side streets with small buildings and houses interspersed with gardens and green spaces.

We get off the n° 22 tram at “U Kaštanu”, the second stop after “Marjánka”, which is the gateway to the neighbourhood. A stop in the most famous pub in the area is mandatory. It is set in a garden a short walk away, where in summer, you can sit on the benches and enjoy the shade under the horse-chestnut trees that have given the name (“U Kaštanu”) to both the

brewery and the adjacent cultural centre, that offers a full calendar of events, ranging from live music (especially jazz), to theatrical performances. It was in this particular place that on April 7, 1878, Ladislav Zápotocký, Josef Boleslav Pecka, Josef Hybeš and others founded the Czech Social Democratic Party, which is represented today by the Čssd.

Břevnov offers food lovers quite a good choice of food. As regards the Czech “hospoda”, besides “U Kaštanu”, it is important to remember “U Presidentů”, a picturesque brewery-restaurant frequented by local people, which is fully decorated with memorabilia, pictures and paintings of the presidents that took office since the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic. But, in the district, there are also restaurants, which offer ethnic food, including at least an Indian restaurant, a Vietnamese and a North African one, as well as others.

For those who love good beer, of particular interest is the brewery located inside Břevnov Monastery (Břevnovský klášter), famous for the excellent quality of its beer and for the variety it produces.

The brewery is named after St. Adalbert, bishop of Prague (sv. Vojtěch) and is one of the oldest breweries in Bohemia. It

was founded in the tenth century, during the construction of the Monastery, but over the centuries, the production of “Břevnovský pivovar” beer was suspended several times. Since 2011, however, it has become fully operational again, with an annual production of about 3,000 hectolitres.

One of the main attractions of Břevnov is its Monastery (or Abbey), that houses the brewery, which belongs to the Benedictine Order. La Basilica ospita le reliquie della Santa e rappresenta il centro spirituale più importante del quar‑ tiere praghese. Attorno al Břevnovský klášter, con il passare del tempo, si andò formando il primo nucleo abi‑ tativo della zona. Al X secolo risale anche la prima menzione del topo‑ nimo. In the park there is also a gallery that is often used to host art exhibitions.

In the large garden, adjacent to the monastery, there is Břevnov cemetery (Břevnovský hřbitov), that can be accessed from U Vojtěšky street. The cemetery, which was founded in 1739, is one of the most famous in Prague. Inside it, there is the Chapel of St. Lazarus that was built in 1762 by the Italian architect Anselmo Lurago, the artist who also participated in the construction of Kinských Palace. Among the Czech personalities who are buried there, there is the philosopher Jan Patočka, the mathematician Vojtěch Jarník and the Czech poet and playwright Josef Topol, who died recently.

But there are not only historical monuments in Břevnov. A symbol of coexistence between the old and the new is

the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, a highly-advanced centre for research in this sector. The Institute was founded in 1959 by a few scientists, including Professor Otto Wichterle, inventor of the soft Hidrogel contact lenses.

Although the district of Břevnov has seen much of its rural space being reduced over the years, it is still one of the “greenest” areas of the Czech capital. Beyond Tomanova street, which delimits a part of the city centre of Břevnov, there is Ladronka park, which gets its name from the old farm and estate that are still there. The park offers a wonderful view of the areas of Motol and Skalka. Recently renovated, this large green space – which often hosts cultural events at various times of the year – has a long bike path that cyclists and skaters enjoy using, especially at weekends. But the whole area is frequented by sports enthusiasts of all kinds, and it is not uncommon to see groups of people, on the grass or under the trees, practising, for example, yoga or fencing.

Another park in the neighbourhood is Kajetánka, an old farm land, that nowadays has been partly used to build a modern residential complex. The area was once the site of a monastery of the order of the Theatine Fathers, and inside it, there is the ancient villa that was renovated in 2011 and which overlooks a small lake along the Brusnice stream.

A short distance from the Prague Castle – which is visited every day by thousands of tourists – Břevnov offers the possibility to go for long walks in its parks or along the streets of the upper side of the neighbourhood, where modern houses alternate with old buildings, surrounded by small gardens – in a suspended atmosphere between the almost forgotten Prague of a few decades ago and the continuously evolving Prague of today.

Elencare i film cechi che negli ultimi quindici anni hanno avuto un impat‑ to a livello internazionale, sarebbe veramente un’impresa, perché sono pochissimi quelli che hanno lasciato veramente il segno oltreconfine.

I tempi in cui le pellicole ceche su‑ scitavano commozione nel grande pubblico o vincevano premi in festival internazionali sono lontani; l’ultima pellicola ceca a essere nominata per l’Oscar come Miglior film straniero risale al 2003, l’anno dell’avvincente film storico “Želary”, diretto da Ondřej Trojan.

Tuttavia, a giudicare dai titoli pre‑ sentati al Festival di Karlovy Vary di quest’anno, la cinematografia nazio‑ nale risulta ultimamente corroborata dall’uscita di una serie di film originali e accattivanti.

Parliamo in primo luogo di “Kobry a užovky” di Jan Prušinovský, protago‑ nisti i due fratelli oggi più conosciuti del grande schermo ceco, Matěj e Kryštof Hádek, una “drammedia” It would really be a challenge to come up with a list of Czech films that have made an impact internationally in the past fifteen years, given that there have been so few which have really left their mark across the border.

The times when the Czech films used to arouse strong emotions in audiences, or win awards at international festivals seem far away. For the last Czech film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film we have to go back to 2003, the year of the captivating historical film “Želary”, directed by Ondřej Trojan.

However, judging from the titles presented at the Karlovy Vary festival this year, the national film industry seems to have been revitalized again by the release of a number of original and engaging films.

We refer particularly to ”Kobry a užovky” by Jan Prušinovský, starring the two best known brothers currently appearing on Czech big screens, Matěj and Kryštof Hádek, a “dramedy” focused on the troubled relationship

Horák, il quale fino a questo film aveva diret‑ to solo spot pubblicitari, ha basato la trama ed il copione sull’esperienza di sua madre come badante per raccon‑ tare questo viaggio di una donna alla scoperta di se stessa.

Gli argomenti che toccano religione, medicina e la relazione fra l’anima e il corpo vengono semplificati in un modo eccessivo; il regista incorpora tutti questi elementi senza mai scen‑ dere sotto la superficie. Se c’è una cosa che salva il film sono i tocchi di umorismo pungente, spesso forniti da Polívka, ma anche i momenti di black from the protagonist, wonderfully played by Alena Mihulová, winner of the best actress prize at Karlovy Vary for her portrayal of Vlasta, a middleaged woman coming to terms with an unexpected illness, and despite her years as a carer of people who have found themselves in similar predicaments, she struggles to find stability in her life. With a disinterested husband, played by Bolek Polívka, who brings just the right dose of humour to the role, and a daughter with whom she is rarely in touch, Vlasta is forced to search for a way to find peace in her soul alone, attending dance classes with Mlada (Tatiana Vilhelmová) and sessions with a Slovak guru. Horak, who up to this film had only directed commercials, based the plot and the script on the experience of his mother as a caregiver to tell this story of a woman’s journey of self-discovery.

The film touches upon themes such as religion, medicine and the relationship between body and soul, but they are all

undoubtedly oversimplified; the director incorporates all these elements in the film but never go below the surface.

If there is something that saves the film it is the touches of biting humour, often provided by Polívka, though there are also moments of black humour such as a scene where Vlasta falls in a grave while we see a procession approaching. If the dramatic part does not fully function, it is the comedy that keeps the film afloat, along with the viewer’s attention.

If Domácí péče is only partially successful, Kobry a užovky, which will be distributed internationally under the title The Snake Brothers, is a work that hits almost all its targets. Set in a Bohemian town (Kralupy nad Vltavou in the district of Mělník), the film by Jan Prušinovský, a director best known for his work for Czech television, could be considered a realistic drama with comic elements, but with an authenticity rarely seen in recent Czech feature films. This is also due to the master-

ful interpretations of the two Hádek brothers, appearing together for the first time on the screen, which they animate with their portrayal of a complicated fraternal relationship. It was mainly the younger brother, Kryštof, who was in the spotlight, earning the Best Actor award at Karlovy Vary for his portrayal of “Kobra”, a drug addict constantly ending up in trouble with the law, while his older brother “Viper” (Matěj Hádek) bails him out of trouble.

A Vipera, un forte bevitore, stanco di tirare sempre fuori dai guai Kobra, arriva però una buona opportunità di affari che migliora la sua vita. Quando le infrazioni del fra‑ tello ricominciano a gettare un’ombra su quello che fa, Vipera è costretto a prendere decisioni che segneranno il destino della famiglia, essendo diviso fra i suoi doveri fraterni e le sue ambi‑ zioni lavorative.

Non si può negare il fatto che Kryštof rubi il palcoscenico dalla prima scena in cui lo vediamo andare in giro in

pieno giorno con un paio di tronche‑ si enormi per i bulloni, che usa per scassinare porte ed entrare nelle case per rubare qualunque cosa trovi. È il personaggio più divertente e vistoso, quello che dà un’anima al film. Detto ciò, Matěj Hádek (classe ‘75) non im‑ pressiona di meno. Dopo la sua par‑ tecipazione a Pohádkář, biglietto da visita cinematografico per Eva Her‑ zigová e pellicola piuttosto scadente, Hádek è tornato in auge con il ruolo nei panni di Jan Hus per la televisione e ora con questo gioiellino, in cui offre un’ottima prova drammatica. Kobry a užovky ha riscosso grande successo anche presso il pubblico straniero a

Karlovy Vary, e tutto ciò nonostante i sottotitoli annacquassero il linguag‑ gio volgare e colorito di Kobra che ha fatto divertire gli spettatori cechi.

Forse l’unico passo falso potrebbe essere un finale non all’altezza del resto della pellicola, ma l’opera di Prušinovský dimostra una vitalità che non vedevamo nel cinema ceco da parecchio tempo.

Se i premi dei suddetti film non ba‑ stano a convincere i cinici che c’è una nuova onda di talento nell’industria cinematografica, non va dimentica‑ to che anche il Globo di cristallo per il miglior documentario a Karlovy Vary è stato vinto da un titolo ceco.

L’opera in questione è Mallory di Helena Třeštíková, un film potente che dà voce ai senza tetto di Praga.

Si focalizza sulla donna del titolo, e segue il suo percorso straordinario da ex-eroinodipendente a mamma senza casa che si batte per una vita migliore. La pellicola racconta la sfi‑ da della protagonista senza chiedere pietà, e mostra che anche nelle vite più disperate vale la pena aspirare e combattere per un’esistenza miglio‑ re. Mallory è stato la ciliegina sulla torta in un festival che promette molto per il futuro del cinema ceco, pronto a far ricredere chi aveva deci‑ so di voltargli le spalle. © Aerofilms

always having to get Kobra out of trouble, receives a potentially great business opportunity that can greatly improve his life. When the infringements of the brother begin to cast a shadow on what he does, Viper is forced to make decisions that will mark the fate of the family, becoming more and more torn between his brotherly duties and his career aspirations.

There is no denying the fact that Kryštof steals the show from the first scene where we see him walking around in broad daylight with a pair of gigantic bolt cutters, which he uses

to break open doors and enter homes to steal whatever he can find. He is the funnier and showier character, who gives a soul to the film. That said, Matěj Hádek (born in 1975) is no less impressive. Since his participation in the rather awful Pohádkář, no more than a business card for Eva Herzigová, Hádek has been rejuvenated with his role as Jan Hus for television and now with this little gem, in which he delivers an excellent dramatic performance.

Kobry a užovky enjoyed great success even with foreign audiences in Karlovy Vary, despite the subtitles which heav-

ily watered down the colourful, vulgar language of Kobra which entertained Czech audiences so much. Perhaps the only misstep could be a final act which did not fit or match the rest of the film, but the work of Prušinovský shows vitality unseen in Czech cinema for quite some time.

If the accolades received for these films are not enough to convince the cynics that there is a new wave of talent in the film industry, we must not forget that even the Crystal Globe for Best Documentary at Karlovy Vary was won by a Czech title. The work in question is Mal-

lory from Helena Třeštíková, a powerful film that gives a voice to the homeless in Prague. It focuses on the title character, and follows her extraordinary journey from being a former heroin addict to a homeless mother who is fighting for a better life. The film depicts the struggle of the protagonist without demanding pity, and shows that even in the most desperate lives it is worth aspiring and fighting for a better life. Mallory was the icing on the cake in a festival that promises much for the future of Czech cinema, ready to change the minds of those who had decided to turn their backs to it.

Nel 1965 usciva uno dei primi capolavori di Miloš Forman, “Gli amori di una bionda”, pellicola in bianco e nero che di recente la rivista britannica Empire ha classificato come uno dei 100 migliori film non in lingua inglese. Osannato dalla critica, fu nominato all’Oscar come miglior film straniero, al Leone d’Oro e al Golden Globe, non ottenendo nessuno dei tre riconoscimenti. La storia è am‑ bientata in Cecoslovacchia in una fabbrica dove lavorano un gran numero di giovani donne che ben presto iniziano a lamentarsi dell’assenza di uomini. Alcune persino si licenziano e il datore di lavoro cerca di rimediare facendo arrivare un gruppo di maturi soldati. Una delle ragazze, An‑ dula, durante una festa fa amicizia con il pianista Milda, che la seduce prima di rientrare a Praga. La ragazza decide così di raggiungerlo, ma l’incontro si rivela diverso da come la ragazza aveva sognato.

Andula, rientrata al lavoro, racconta alle colleghe quello che avrebbe desiderato accadesse trala‑ sciando la triste realtà.

In 1965 one of the first masterpieces of Miloš Forman was released, “Loves of a Blonde”, a black and white film, which quite recently was ranked, by the British film magazine Empire, as one of the 100 best films not made in the English language. Hailed by critics, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, the Golden Lion and a Golden Globe awards, despite not winning any of the three. The story is set in Czechoslovakia in a factory which employs a large number of young women who soon begin to complain about the absence of men. Some even quit and the employer tries to remedy by getting a group of mature soldiers to arrive. One of the girls, Andula, during a party makes friends with the pianist Milda, who seduces her before returning to Prague. The girl subsequently decides to look for him, but the encounter proves to be different from what she had dreamed. Andula, having returned to work, tells her colleagues what she desired would have happened while neglecting the sad reality.

La StB (Státní bezpečnost), il famigerato corpo di polizia segreta cecoslovacca, nasce nel 1945 all’indo‑ mani della seconda guerra mondiale. La sua funzione ha subito diversi cambiamenti nel corso degli anni.

Formalmente il suo compito era quello di garantire la sicurezza nazionale, ma in realtà si rivelò uno degli strumenti più spietati del partito comunista per re‑ primere ogni forma di dissenso, sino alla Rivoluzione di velluto. Il regime utilizzò l’StB per spiare gli espo‑ nenti dei partiti politici disciolti, i membri del clero e gli ex esponenti della vecchia classe imprenditoriale, nonché tutte le persone sospettate di attività di sa‑ botaggio e di rapporti con il blocco occidentale. Negli ultimi due decenni del regime, l’attività della Státní bezpečnost, attraverso un temibile sistema di spie e informatori, si concentrò principalmente sul control‑ lo dei gruppi di attivisti per i diritti umani come, ad esempio, Charta 77 che era considerato dal governo un movimento sovversivo.

The StB (Státní bezpečnost), the infamous Czechoslovak secret police, was established in 1945 after the Second World War. Its function has undergone various changes over the years. Formally, its job was to ensure national security, but it actually turned out one of the most ruthless instruments of the Communist Party to suppress all forms of dissent, until the Velvet Revolution. The regime used the StB to spy on members of the dissolved political parties, clergy members and former members of the old business class, as well as all people suspected of sabotage activities and relations with the Western bloc. In the last two decades of the regime, the activity of Státní bezpečnost, through a formidable system of spies and informers, focused mainly on the control of groups of human rights activists, such as for example, Charta 77, which was considered by the government as a subversive movement.

Nasceva l’eroe di guerra Rudolf Pernický The war hero Rudolf Pernický was born 100 anni fa 100 years ago

Rudolf Pernický, soldato e paracadutista cecoslo‑ vacco, nasce a Krhová il primo luglio del 1915.

Dopo l’annessione della Boemia e della Moravia da parte del regime nazista nel 1939, fugge in Gran Bretagna dove lavora per il governo degli esuli cecoslovacchi addestrando i soldati. Riesce eroicamente a sopravvivere ad un’operazione mi‑ litare segreta che lo riporta nelle sue terre di ori‑ gine e fino alla fine della guerra fa parte del mo‑ vimento di resistenza. Dopo la liberazione della Cecoslovacchia si unisce all’Esercito cecoslovacco diplomandosi all’accademia militare. Con l’ascesa del regime comunista viene arrestato e costretto a vent’anni di reclusione. Solo grazie ad un’amni‑ stia ritrova la libertà e viene nominato presidente della Confederazione dei Prigionieri Politici. Il 28 ottobre del 2005 gli è stata assegnata la massima onorificenza dell’Ordine del Leone Bianco da parte del Presidente della Repubblica Ceca. Morirà qual‑ che settimana più tardi.

Rudolf Pernický, the Czechoslovak soldier and paratrooper, was born in Krhová on July the 1st, 1915. After the annexation of Bohemia and Moravia by the Nazis in 1939, he fled to Britain where he worked for the government of the exiled Czechoslovakians to train soldiers. He heroically, managed to survive a secret military operation that brought him back to his native land, and he would take part in the resistance movement until the end of the war. After the liberation of Czechoslovakia he joined the Czechoslovak Army, graduating at the military academy. With the rise of the communist regime he was arrested and forced into twenty years of imprisonment. He rediscovered freedom only thanks to an amnesty, and was later named President of the Confederation of Political Prisoners. On the 28th of October 2005, he was awarded with the highest honour of the Order of the White Lion from the President of the Czech Republic. He died a few weeks later.

Nasceva lo stabilimento di Vysoké Mýto The Vysoké Mýto plant was born

Lo scorso giugno Iveco Bus ha festeggiato il 120° anniversario dalla fondazione dello stabilimento di Vysoké Mýto con una settimana di festeggiamenti dedicati ai dipendenti e al pubblico. Quello di Vyso‑ ké Mýto è il più grande complesso di produzione di veicoli commerciali dell’Europa Centrale e dell’Est, e una delle maggiori realtà produttive di autobus in Europa, tanto da essere considerato uno dei prin‑ cipali datori di lavoro e fonte di reddito per questo paese. Tutto comincia nel 1895 con l’artigiano e im‑ prenditore Josef Sodomka che avvia a Vysoké Mýto la produzione di carrozze, segnando così l’inizio della storia dello stabilimento. L’azienda del lungi‑ mirante imprenditore ceco nel corso degli anni si è trasformata diventando appunto una grande fab‑ brica di pullman. A Vysoké Mýto, Iveco produce l’au‑ tobus urbano Urbanway progettato per il trasporto pubblico nelle aree urbane e il Crossway, veicolo di punta della gamma interurbana, nato proprio nella fabbrica ceca.

Last June the Iveco bus celebrated the 120th anniversary of the founding of the plant in Vysoké Mýto with a week of celebrations dedicated to the employees and to the public. The commercial vehicle production complex in Vysoké Mýto is the largest in Central and Eastern Europe, and one of the main manufacturers of buses in Europe, and is considered to be one of the biggest employers and sources of income for this country. It all began in 1895 with the artisan and entrepreneur Josef Sodomka in Vysoké Mýto who started the car production, thus marking the beginning of the history of the plant. The company of the forward-thinking Czech entrepreneur has transformed over the years, becoming a huge factory of buses. In Vysoké Mýto, Iveco produces the city bus Urbanway designed for public transport in urban areas and the Crossway, a leading intercity vehicle for long distances, which was also born in the Czech factory.

Il libro del prof. Špička riunisce tre temi tipici petrarche‑ schi di solito trattati separatamente: Valchiusa, Avigno‑ ne e Mont Ventoux, per creare una mappa mentale della Provenza e dell’esistenza del giovane Petrarca, ma so‑ prattutto perché dalla loro interazione ne risulti un utile documento di studio sia su questioni biografiche che critiche. La sezione sulla Valchiusa, che costituisce il ca‑ pitolo più lungo, da una parte riflette il topos del “locus amoenus” e dall’altra, invece, un luogo “lirico” in quanto contraddistinto dalla presenza di Laura. Nel caso di Avi‑ gnone è interessante come l’immagine topica della città rumorosa e invivibile (presente già in Orazio, Giovenale, e altri) si evolva, in Petrarca, nell’immagine mostruosa di una città-inferno. Monte Ventoso, invece, rappresenta l’occasione per una riflessione esistenziale. Ogni capitolo è accompagnato da testi scelti. Tutti gli scritti sono tra‑ dotti dall’autore, mentre i passi in volgare sono ripresi da Pokorný o da Renč.

Prof. Špička’s book brings together three typical Petrarchian themes, that are normally treated separately: Vaucluse, Avignon and Mont Ventoux, to create a mental map of Provence and the existence of the young Petrarch, but above all because – from their interaction – a useful study document may be derived, on biographical as well as critical issues. The Vaucluse section, the longest chapter reflects, on the one hand, the topos of “locus amoenus”, and on the other, a “lyrical” place, as it is marked by the presence of Laura. In the case of Avignon, it is interesting how the topical image of the noisy and unlivable city (already present in Horace, Juvenal, and others.), evolves, in Petrarch, into the monstrous image of a “hell city”. Mont Ventoux, instead, represents the opportunity for an existential reflection. Each chapter is accompanied by a number of selected texts. All the written works are translated by the author, whilst the vernacular passages are revised by Pokorný or Renč.

In occasione del centesimo anniversario dalla nascita del noto scrittore ceco Bohumil Hrabal, celebrato nel 2014, Mondadori ha scelto di pubblicare la versione Paperback del libro “Hrabal, opere scelte”, uscito per la prima volta nel 2003 nella collana “I Meridiani” e curato dal prof. Ser‑ gio Corduas. Il volume è diviso in otto sezioni e ripercorre l’intera produzione dello scrittore. Vi si possono leggere le opere più note del narratore ceco, ma anche un numero consistente di inediti e un’interessante proposta di scritti sperimentali e giovanili. Di particolare interesse sono i due poemetti “La bella Poldi” e “Adagio lamentoso”, posti rispettivamente in apertura e in chiusura dell’antologia, e una ricca sezione dedicata alle interviste. Molto utili, per orientarsi nella vasta produzione dell’autore e per seguirne le complesse vicende editoriali molto spesso segnate dalla censura, sono le note curate da Annalisa Cosentino, docente di Letteratura ceca presso l’Universi‑ tà La Sapienza di Roma. In apertura, un ottimo saggio introduttivo di Jiří Pelán.

In view of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the famous Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal, celebrated in 2014, Mondadori has chosen to publish a Paperback version of the book “Hrabal, Selected Works”, that was published for the first time in 2003 in the series “I Meridiani” and edited

by Prof. Sergio Corduas. The volume is divided into eight sections and covers the entire production of the writer. It contains the most famous works of the Czech writer, but also a substantial number of unpublished works and an interesting collection of experimental and early writings. Of particular interest are the two poems “La bella Poldi” and “Adagio lamentoso”, placed respectively at the beginning and the end of the anthology, and includes a rich section devoted to interviews. Very useful for consulting the vast production of the author follow the complex publishing vicissitudes – that often led to censorship – are the notes edited by Annalisa Cosentino, professor of Czech literature at the University of La Sapienza in Rome. The book opens with an excellent introductory essay by Jiří Pelán.

“Platonismo negativo e altri frammenti” è il primo progetto filosofico elaborato da Jan Patočka rimasto incompiuto. Il libro, edito da Bompiani, propone una significativa selezio‑ ne dei più svariati ambiti di indagine legati alle riflessioni del filosofo che è stato definito “il Socrate ceco”. Contro la tradizione metafisica positiva, diretta a un sapere definito e malleabile che ha permeato la cultura filosofica europea, fino a sfociare nella contemporanea era tecnica, Patočka tenta di tratteggiare un pensiero in negativo, in cui l’idea non rappresenta un possesso, ma un ineffabile richiamo. Lo scritto, dei primi anni ‘50, è stato inserito nella raccolta di in‑ terventi realizzata in occasione del cinquantaduesimo com‑ pleanno della filosofa Božena Komárková. Il testo, così come lo conosciamo, è stato recuperato da una copia manoscritta e originale dell’autore; inoltre gli scritti inclusi nel volume appaiono per la prima volta in italiano e sono stati accurata‑ mente tradotti sulla base degli originali in lingua ceca.

“Negative Platonism and other fragments” is the first, unfinished, philosophical project developed by Jan Patočka. The book, published by Bompiani, offers a significant selection of the most diverse areas of investigation into the reflections of the philosopher, defined as “the Czech Socrates”. Against the positive metaphysical tradition, aimed at a defined and malleable knowledge - which permeated European philosophical culture and led to the present technical era - Patočka attempts to outline a negative thought, in which the idea does not possession, but an ineffable lure. The written work, that dates back to the early 1950s, was added to the collection of speeches made on the occasion of the fifty-second birthday of philosopher Božena Komárková. The written work, as we know it, was recovered from an original manuscript copy of the author, and the writings included in the volume were, for the first time, written in Italian and accurately translated on the basis of the original Czech texts.

“Trilocale di plastica” di Petra Hůlová è un viaggio nella vita di una prostituta trentenne che esercita il suo mestie‑ re con ferrea disciplina e un pizzico d’orgoglio, lavorando alacremente alla propria crescita professionale per tenersi stretta la sua fetta di mercato. Teatro delle sue gesta è un trilocale in plastica – «quello che probabilmente qual‑ cuno chiamerebbe bordello è per me un nido umano di calore pieno di angolini ricchi di sorprese nascoste» – e il catalogo è vario: triangoli, incontri a due o di gruppo o ancora numeri acrobatici che richiedono appositi attrezzi e travestimenti adeguati. La giovane scrittrice Petra Hůlová, divenuta famosa con la pubblicazione nel 2002 di “Paměť mojí babič”, uno dei libri cechi più letti degli ultimi anni, in questo romanzo riesce a tessere, con grazia e raffinata iro‑ nia, un godibilissimo monologo, in bilico tra pornografia e commedia semiseria che trabocca di ingegnose trovate linguistiche, ritraendo un mondo cupo e impotente – forse una visione del futuro – in cui uomini e donne sono ridotti ai loro desideri e pulsioni.

“Plastic three-room apartment” by Petra Hůlová is a journey into the life of a thirty year-old prostitute, who exercises her profession with iron discipline and a pinch of pride. She works hard to improve her profession, in an attempt to hold on to her market share. The scene of her exploits is a plastic three-room apartment - «what some might consider a brothel is for me a nest of human warmth, with many corners full of hidden surprises» - and with a diverse catalogue: triangle, couple or group meetings or even stunts that require special equipment and appropriate disguises. The young writer Petra Hůlová, who became famous in 2002 for her publication “Paměť mojí babič “ – one of the most widely read Czech books in recent years – has been able, in this novel, to compose with grace and refined irony, a very enjoyable monologue, hovering between pornography and a semi-serious comedy, filled with ingenious language expedients, portraying a dark and powerless world – perhaps a vision of the future – in which men and women are reduced to their basic desires and instincts.

Terre verdiane a Praga

Le atmosfere del grande musicista attraverso la pittura di Vittorio Ferrarini e di Ferdinando Quintavalla The atmospheres of the great musician conveyed through the paintings of Vittorio Ferrarini and Ferdinando Quintavalla

Un viaggio nel mondo di Giuseppe Verdi, non solo fra le scene delle opere del grande compositore di Busseto, ma anche nei paesaggi e nelle atmosfere della sua terra d’origine: l’Emilia. A pro‑ porlo a Praga, attraverso una selezione antologica dei loro quadri, sono stati due artisti, Vittorio Ferrarini e Ferdi‑ nando Quintavalla, entrambi originari di Parma e amici da tempo.

La mostra dal titolo significativo, “Ter‑ re Verdiane”, è stata ospitata dall’Isti‑ tuto Italiano di Cultura, che ha messo a disposizione gli spazi, eleganti e

trascorso una importante parentesi di vita e di lavoro alla fine degli anni No‑ vanta e l’inizio di questo millennio. È stato proprio durante il periodo vissu‑ to nella “Città d’Oro” – pur impegnato in una intensa attività imprenditoria‑ le - che egli ha riscoperto la passione giovanile per la pittura, decidendo così di non abbandonarla più. Da allo‑ ra la sua vita è in buona parte consa‑ crata all’amore per l’arte.

Negli ultimi dieci anni la sua carriera di pittore è stata tutta un susseguirsi di tappe significative, dalle prime

A journey into the world of Giuseppe Verdi, not only through the scenes of the works of the great composer of Busseto, but also landscapes and the atmosphere of his homeland: Emilia.

Now, through a retrospective selection of their paintings, two artists, Vittorio Ferrarini and Ferdinand Quintavalla, both from Parma and long time friends, have decided to bring it to Prague.

Ferrarini – “Entrepreneur and Artist,” as he briefly defines himself, is a

painter who has a special relationship with Prague, the city where he spent a significant phase of his life and professional career in the late nineties, and the beginning of this millennium.

It was during the period lived in the “Golden City”, while engaged in entrepreneurial activity, when he rediscovered his youthful passion for painting, and decided not to abandon it any more. Since then his life has largely been devoted to his love for art.

Verdian Lands in Prague mostre a Parma, per arrivare persino a Parigi, al prestigioso Carrousel du Louvre, dove sei anni fa sono sta‑ te esposte due sue opere. Anche il pubblico praghese ha avuto modo di apprezzarne le qualità, grazie a due personali: la prima del 2008 e la seconda nel 2010, entrambe presso l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Una serie di opere di Ferrarini sono poi esposte in modo permanente a Praga, presso la sede del gruppo di imprese italiane IBC, in virtù della vecchia amicizia che lega l’artista a

Quella espressa da Ferrarini è un’ar‑ te tipicamente materica, legata alla terra, che egli spiega con le origini rurali della sua famiglia. “Vengo da una famiglia di contadini e anche io da ragazzo, durante le vacanze scola‑ stiche, ero solito lavorare nei campi. È proprio questa – non casualmente – l’atmosfera che esprimono le mie opere” come egli stesso ha detto.

Over the past ten years his career as a painter has undergone a whole series of significant phases, from the first exhibitions in Parma, before even reaching Paris, for the prestigious Carrousel du Louvre, where six years ago two of his works were displayed. Quintavalla is known to be an artist of meticulous precision. He dedicates himself to a single work for months, managing to achieve an effect of particular realism, which some critics have

Per Ferdinando Quintavalla l’espe‑ rienza espositiva praghese è stata in‑ vece la prima in assoluto, nonostante in carriera abbia partecipato a nume‑ rose manifestazioni anche di livello internazionale, ottenendo lusinghieri successi sia di critica che di pubblico.

Artista di notevole e riconosciuta ca‑ pacità creativa, la sua carriera inizia sin da giovanissimo e oggi le sue ope‑ re si trovano in importanti collezioni private sia in Italia che all’estero.

In Prague he presented 27 paintings, 24 of which were free interpretations of many works of Giuseppe Verdi, and three still life paintings, “a genre that has been part of my repertoire in recent years,” as he explained. During the opening event Quintavalla especially stressed the relationship of admiration that links him to Verdi, which prompted him to translate the work of the great musician into images, and theatrical scenarios.

It is no coincidence that in 2003 the Department of Culture of the town of Parma, on the occasion of the commemoration of the death of Giuseppe Verdi, hosted, in the San Ludovico Gallery, an exhibition entitled “Emotions for Verdi”. The same emotions that Quintavalla wanted to convey to the public in Prague.

A Praga ha presentato 27 tele: ven‑ tiquattro libere interpretazioni di altrettante opere di Giuseppe Verdi, e tre nature morte, “un genere che fa parte del mio repertorio pitto‑ rico, degli ultimi anni” come egli stesso ha spiegato. Durante l’even‑ to di inaugurazione Quintavalla ha sottolineato soprattutto il rapporto di ammirazione che lo lega a Verdi, il che lo ha spinto a tradurre in im‑ magini, in scenari teatrali, opere del grande musicista.

Non è un caso che nel 2003 l’Assesso‑ rato alla cultura del comune di Parma, in occasione della commemorazione dell’anniversario della morte di Giu‑ seppe Verdi, abbia ospitato – nella Galleria San Ludovico – una sua mostra dal titolo “Emozioni per Verdi”. Le stesse emozioni che Quintavalla ha voluto tra‑ smettere al pubblico di Praga. (Gus)

“Con le sue reti si vola, facci la ca‑ priola, facci la capriola”. Un urlo, un coro assordante che si alzava ogni domenica nello Stadio Luigi Ferraris di Genova, durante le partite del Ge‑ noa, la società calcistica più antica d’Italia. Per ben sei anni fu questo l’omaggio a uno dei più grandi at‑ taccanti della storia del club: Tomáš Skuhravý. L‘incitamento evocava la classica esultanza con la quale il

centravanti cecoslovacco deliziava il pubblico dopo un gol. Una capriola in avanti che all’apparenza poteva sembrare semplice, ma che in realtà non doveva essere proprio un gioco da ragazzi, considerando i quasi 100 chilogrammi di peso dell’attaccante.

Un fisico di un metro e novanta‑ tre, contornato da capelli lunghi e quell’aria da musicista anni Settan‑ ta che lo contraddistingueva fuori

e dentro il campo. Sì, perché oltre all’istinto da bomber, Skuhravý è ricordato per il carattere a dir poco esuberante lontano dal rettangolo verde, finendo in molte occasioni sulle pagine di cronaca: proprio lui, volto noto della sezione sportiva, si è ritrovato spesso a dover fare i conti con la giustizia a causa di una per‑ sonalità fuori dal comune. A scream, a deafening chorus that would be heard every Sunday at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, during the matches of Genoa C.F.C, the oldest football club in Italy. For six years this was the tribute to one of the greatest strikers in the history of the club: Tomáš Skuhravý. The incitement evoked the classic celebration with which the Czech striker delighted the crowds after a goal. A front flip that may have looked simple, but could not have been child’s play, considering the nearly 100 kilogram weight of the

striker. An impressive physique, one metre ninety-three in height, covered by long hair and the look of a seventies musician that distinguished him on and off the field. Yes, because apart from his predatory instinct, Skuhravý is also remembered, for what is, to say the least, an exuberant character away from the green rectangle, frequently ending up on the newspaper pages for the wrong reasons. He was actually a well-known face in the sports section, but often found himself having to deal with justice due to a personality which was quite out of the ordinary. Decisive on the pitch, exuberant off it, Tomáš

Skuhravý was the classic example of a "mixed blessing" player, capable of inciting a very warm public like Genoa’s thanks to his goals. Important finishes which led the "Griffon" to the forefront of Italian and European football.

Born in Přerov nad Labem, a small village 35 km from Prague, he began to smell the grass of the playing field in his hometown, wearing the shirts of TJ Sokol Přerov nad Labem. Sparta Prague, the most successful team of Czechoslovakia, soon became aware of him, gave him the necessary papers, and brought him to the capital. It was here where his rise began, and in

Skuhravý fu il classico calciatore “cro‑ ce e delizia”, in grado di aizzare un popolo molto caloroso come quello genoano grazie ai suoi gol. Reti che portarono il “Grifone” alla ribalta del calcio italiano ed europeo.

Nato a Přerov nad Labem, un paesino a 35 km da Praga, iniziò a sentire il profumo dell’erba del campo da gioco nella sua città, indossando la maglia del TJ Sokol Přerov nad Labem. Lo Sparta Praga, la squadra più titolata

della Cecoslovacchia, molto presto si accorse di lui, lo tesserò e lo portò nella capitale. Qui ebbe inizio la sua ascesa: nel 1982 alla giovane età di 17 anni debuttò con la maglia della prima squadra, riuscendo pian pia‑ no a diventarne un simbolo. In otto stagioni in maglia granata lo score è davvero niente male: conquista ben cinque campionati e tre coppe di Cecoslovacchia, siglando 55 reti in 113 incontri.

Serviranno però i Mondiali del 1990, disputati proprio in Italia con la ma‑ glia della Cecoslovacchia, a convincere il presidente del Genoa Aldo Spinelli a staccare un assegno per aggiudicarsi le prestazioni sportive del calciatore.

Skuhravý a Italia ’90 siglò ben cinque reti, sfiorando il titolo di capocan‑ noniere e arrivando alle spalle del beniamino di casa Totò Schillaci. Il so‑ gno cecoslovacco si infranse contro la Germania nei quarti di finale, mentre

quello di Skuhravý iniziò proprio qui, con l’arrivo a Genova sulla sponda rossoblù.

Le cifre del trasferimento non furono mai ben definitive; ma era certo che il nuovo Genoa targato Bagnoli aggiun‑ geva una freccia molto importante al suo arco. Fin da subito si instaurò un rapporto particolare tra il boemo e la tifoseria per uno strano scherzo del destino: il calciatore e il Grifone erano legati dalla data di nascita che per entrambi segnava 7 settembre.

Una casualità che non può essere de‑ finita tale: il Genoa e Skuhravý erano destinati ad incontrarsi per diventare grandi insieme. Il centravanti classe 1965 fece subito breccia nei cuori dei tifosi grazie alla sua personalità briosa, che caratterizzò gli anni nella città della Lanterna. Nelle prime due stagioni con la maglia dei rossoblù, Skuhravý formò una coppia ben as‑ sortita col compagno di reparto Pato Aguilera: il cecoslovacco, grazie al suo fisico era potente ed implacabile mentre l’uruguaiano sgusciava tra le difese avversarie grazie a doti di “folletto” piccolo e veloce. quistarono risultati storici in campo nazionale ed internazionale come la vittoria ad Anfield Road di Liverpool, la prima di un club italiano, o quella del 20 gennaio 1991, quando proprio 1982 at the young age of 17 he made his debut in the first team, gradually managing to become a symbol.

In eight seasons in the maroon colours the results were not bad at all; he won five championships and three Czechoslovakian cups, totaling 55 goals in 113 matches.

However, it was the 1990 World Cup, played in Italy with the shirt of Czechoslovakia, which convinced the Genoa president Aldo Spinelli to write a cheque in order to acquire the services of the player. Skuhravý scored five goals in Italy ‘90, narrowly missing out on the top scorer title, just behind the home favorite Toto Schillaci. The Czechoslovak dream shattered against Germany in the quarterfinals, while Skuhravý’s began right there, with his imminent arrival on the Rossoblu (Red-blue) side of Genoa.

The transfer figures were never clearly defined, but it was certain that the new Genoa of Bagnoli had added a very important weapon to its arsenal.

hearts of fans thanks to his lively personality, which made his years in the city of the “Lanterna” (Lighthouse) stand out. In his first two seasons in the red and blue colours, Skuhravý formed a well-matched partnership with fellow forward Pato Aguilera, and while the Czechoslovakian, thanks to his physique was powerful and implacable, the Uruguayan slipped be-

e Liverpool. La stagione si concluse con un deludente quattordicesimo posto, a un passo dalla retrocessione, mentre quella seguente iniziava con Skuhravý in prima pagina per fatti del tutto estranei a quelli sportivi: all'alba del 9 novembre 1993, la Mit‑ subishi 3000 bianca del centravanti ceco andò fuori strada, terminando la sua corsa sul ciglio di una scogliera a picco sul mare nei pressi di Celle Li‑

gure. Il calciatore, miracolosamente illeso nella vettura distrutta, affermò poi di essere uscito ad acquistare del‑ le medicine per la moglie incinta (ma l'unica farmacia notturna di Savona non volle confermare la storia). Una versione lontana da quella ufficiale raccontava infatti di una notte in discoteca, a festeggiare il primo gol stagionale. Terzo incidente (e terza auto distrutta) in poco più di tre anni!

Il giocatore rimase alla corte del club genoano fino al 1996, quando con 163 presente e 58 gol all'attivo de‑ cise di lasciare il Belpaese per vestire la maglia dello Sporting Lisbona. In Portogallo collezionò appena quat‑ tro presenze senza lasciare il segno, prima di appendere le scarpette al chiodo in patria con la maglia del Viktoria Žižkov.

What were Aguilera and Skuhravý for the fans of Genoa? Two heroes! Thanks to their goals the rossoblù achieved historical results both nationally and internationally such as the victory at Anfield in Liverpool, the first by an Italian club, or that famous 20th of January 1991, when just a goal from

the Czech striker gave the victory to the “Grifone” at the ground of Juventus.

"That year we feared no one," Skuhravý still says. A season to remember also on a personal level, since he won the title of "Best Czechoslovak player of the year, in 1991. On the pitch, Skuhravý was a great leader. "I was like this, even with one leg I would never accept defeat ..." he also said recently.

The following season, Genoa even reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup, where they had to surrender to the superiority of Ajax at the end of a memorable journey that saw the Rossoblu overcome the likes of Real Oviedo, Dinamo Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest and Liverpool. The season ended with a disappointing fourteenth place, one step away from relegation, while

the next one began with Skuhravý in the headlines for events completely unrelated to sports. On the dawn of November 9, 1993, the White Mitsubishi 3000 of the Czech striker went offroad and ended up on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea near Celle Ligure.

The footballer, miraculously unscathed despite the destroyed car, then claimed to have gone out to buy medicine for

Skuhravý aveva progettato di affitta‑ re una Mercedes dal valore di circa 80 mila euro per consegnarla a un suo complice, il quale avrebbe poi dovu‑ to occuparsi di modificare i numeri di identificazione e di venderla, mentre lui avrebbe dovuto fingere un furto.

“colpo di testa”, un'ulteriore sorpresa di una vita spericolata. La vita di un ragazzone ribelle che, proprio come accadeva sul terreno di gioco, ama poco gli schemi classici e – minimo che si possa dire - spesso preferisce lasciar spazio all'imprevedibilità.

Skuhravý has remained very tied to Italy, and immediately after his retirement he moved to Varazze, in the province of Savona, where he still lives with his family. Despite the passing years, the unpredictable personality remains intact, as demonstrated by the recent conviction of fraud against a car rental

company in his home country. Skuhravý had planned to rent a Mercedes worth about 80,000 Euros and then hand it over to an accomplice, who would then have to deal with changing the identification numbers and sell it, while he would have to stage a fake robbery.

His plan was discovered and foiled by the Czech police. Having already been involved in previous cases of theft of luxury cars in the Czech Republic and Germany, Skuhravý was sentenced to two years probation, but thanks to the amnesty granted by President Vaclav Klaus in 2012 to allow prisons to be emptied he managed to get away. Today he runs a restaurant he owns himself and often works as a commentator for local television Telenord, waiting for the next “header”, another surprise in his reckless life. The life of a rebellious boy, who just as he did on the pitch, strongly disliked classic game plans, and to put it mildly, often prefered to leave space to unpredictability.
