Cari lettori,

il tema di attualità al quale rivolgiamo la nostra attenzione in apertura di questo numero è la recente decisione del governo di Praga di istituire una task force anti fake news. Si tratta di un argomento che negli ultimi mesi ha animato il dibattito politico in Repubblica Ceca, con una certa risonanza anche internazionale, vista l’emergenza per gli stati democratici di affrontare la cosiddetta “guerra della informazione” e fronteggiare la creazione di notizie false diffuse con scopi destabilizzanti. La soluzione individuata non è rimasta peraltro immune da valutazioni negative neanche in patria. Il più critico si è mostrato proprio il presidente Miloš Zeman,

the current topic to which we turn our attention in the opening of this issue, is the recent decision of the Prague government to establish an anti fake news task force. It is a topic that has livened up political debate in the Czech Republic in recent months, with a certain resonance even internationally, given the emergency of democratic states to address the so-called “war of information”, and deal with the creation of false news spread with aims of destabilizing. The solution, however, has not remained immune to negative feedback even in its homeland. The most critical voice has turned out to be none other than President Miloš Zem-

Di grande attualità in questo periodo anche gli interrogativi su quali saranno le conseguenze per l’economia nazionale della prossima fine del regime di svalutazione della corona. La Banca centrale ceca dovrebbe infatti presto interrompere i propri interventi, probabilmente già nel corso della primavera, consentendo alla moneta nazionale di tornare a muoversi in autonomia. La conseguenza più probabile sarà secondo gli esperti un apprezzamento della corona, con la possibilità che questa novità possa da un lato frenare l’export ma allo stesso tempo rafforzare il mercato interno.

Fra gli altri argomenti, ci è apparso opportuno in questo numero ricordare il 40° anniversario, nel gennaio del 2017, della nascita di Charta 77, cercando di capire quale sia oggi l’eredità lasciata da quel leggendario movimento di difesa dei diritti umani nato nella Cecoslovacchia comunista. Al di là delle celebrazioni e delle retoriche commemorative, la inevitabile conclusione alla quale siamo giunti è che, nella attuale Repubblica Ceca, quel grande lascito di principi e di valori si sia ridotto ormai ai minimi termini.

Another topical theme at the moment, is also the questions about what the consequences for the national economy will be following the upcoming end of the devaluation regime of the crown. The Czech central bank should in fact interrupt its interventions shortly, probably during spring, allowing the national currency to move around autonomously. The most likely outcome according to experts, will be an increase in value of the crown, with the possibility that this change can on the one hand slow down exports but at the same time strengthen the internal market.

Among other topics, it was also appropriate, in this issue, to remember the 40th anniversary, in January 2017, of the birth of Charter 77, while trying to understand what today is the legacy of that legendary movement of defense of human rights, born in Communist Czechoslovakia. Beyond the celebrations and commemorative speeches, the inescapable conclusion which we have reached is that, in today’s Czech Republic, the greatest legacy of principles and values has now been reduced to a minimum.

Come al tempo della Guerra Fredda, Praga si trova di nuovo in prima linea contro la minaccia che viene dalla Russia. Una minaccia, però, virtuale, fatta di parole, di condivisioni, di social network e di fake news. C’è chi accusa i creatori di notizie false per aver perso le elezioni, vedi le presidenziali Usa, chi teme così tanto possibili in-

cursioni hacker nel sistema di conteggio delle schede di voto che ha deciso di tornare al vecchio spoglio a mano, leggasi Olanda, chi ha lanciato una rete di 16 redazioni in partnership per verificare le notizie, come in Francia, chi ha lanciato un sistema insieme a Facebook per riconoscere le bufale, come in Germania, e chi invece ha

creato una vera e propria task force per combattere questo fenomeno. È proprio la Repubblica Ceca che è capofila di questa battaglia, anche in vista delle elezioni tedesche e francesi e nella stessa Cechia in ottobre.

Non si tratta soltanto di rintracciare i siti internet creati ad hoc, come avvenne in Macedonia per creare notizie false su Hillary Clinton, ma di controllare anche i video che circolano in rete, i titoli messi apposta per creare allarmismo, paura, disil-

lusione, scandalo. Come è successo con il video scioccante pubblicato e condiviso a dicembre dal sito “Mai più Canada” e che mostrava un gruppo di ragazzi che picchiavano una donna.

Nel titolo si sottolineava che si trattava di un gruppo di immigrati, ma si è poi scoperto che era un falso. Un responsabile della polizia ceca, David Chovanec, ha riconosciuto quel video, che risaliva al 2016 ed era stato ripre-

tifying, exposing and stopping fake news, especially those considered to have been created by the Kremlin to influence the presidential vote, and Czech politics. An idea that will be copied soon also by Germany and Finland, according to much of the international media. At the head of this

special unit, is Benedikt Vangeli who made the battle against misinformation and the circulation of false news his, as well as fighting click-baiting on social networks, and on the Internet. It is not only about tracking the websites created ad hoc, as happened in Macedonia to create false news

about Hillary Clinton, but also check the videos circulating on the network, with titles deliberately chosen to create alarmism, fear, disillusionment, scandal. This indeed was the case with the shocking video posted and shared in December from the website and Facebook page “Never again

Canada” which showed a group of boys beating a woman. In the title, it was emphasized that a group of immigrants were responsible, but it turned out to be a fake. A manager of the Czech Police, David Chovanec, recognized that video, which dated back to 2016 and had been filmed by

vera e a settembre rispettivamente – e vedremo cosa potremo imparare – ha spiegato una fonte dell’unità – istruiremo anche i funzionari pubblici a evitare di farsi piegare dai ricatti via e-mail o dai lobbisti”.

Sul fatto che la minaccia di hacker e fake news parli russo, Jakub Janda, ha pochi dubbi. Secondo il vicedirettore del think tank con base a Praga, European Values, noto anche come Kremlin Watch, ci sono decine di siti in lingua ceca che creano e distribuiscono notizie esagerate o completamente false.

In Repubblica Ceca gli obiettivi di questi siti sono principalmente tre: attaccare i politici che criticano l’aggressività russa nella politica estera, come in Ucraina, sostenere i politici che hanno atteggiamenti e posizioni filo-Mosca e minare la membership Ue della Cechia sul lungo periodo.

Il grande problema è che, secondo recenti sondaggi, il 26% dei cittadini cechi crede a questi siti e li legge quo-

tidianamente. “L’obiettivo principale della propaganda in Repubblica Ceca è di insinuare il dubbio nell’opinione pubblica che la democrazia non sia il modo migliore per organizzare un Paese, creare un’immagine negativa di

Ue e Nato e scoraggiare la gente dal partecipare al processo democratico”, ha dichiarato il segretario di stato per gli Affari Ue Tomáš Prouza.

A Praga fa paura anche la presenza dell’intelligence russa, “i servizi segreti stranieri più attivi” sul territorio ceco, secondo l’agenzia ceca per la sicurezza interna (Bis), secondo cui l’obiettivo primario è “fabbricare disinformazione” con lo slogan che “tutti mentono”.

E che il terreno della lotta al terrorismo e alla destabilizzazione mondiale in generale si sia spostato sul web e sui social, comunque, resta evidente.

I segnali si leggono chiari anche tra le

nuovissime generazioni: un gruppo di studenti della Università Masaryk di Brno ha lanciato lo scorso anno il progetto “Zvol si info”, che si pone come obiettivo quello di “far crescere la consapevolezza di quanto sia importante aumentare la alfabetizzazione mediatica fra i giovani cechi”.

According to the Czech intelligence the number of Russian diplomats is twice as high than the US, and between them may hide several spies.

And that the terrain of the struggle against terrorism and global destabilization in general has moved to the web and social networks, however, remains clear. The signals are interpreted as clear even among the newest generation: a group of students from the Masaryk University in Brno last year launched the project “Zvol si info”, which aims to “raise awareness of the importance of increasing the media literacy among young Czechs”.

È una delle questioni più dibattute nel settore finanziario e non solo. Il termine del regime di intervento sul corso, grazie al quale la Banca Nazionale Ceca impedisce allo scambio di scendere sotto la soglia di 27 corone per euro, si sta avvicinando: la banca centrale ha confermato di volere interrompere l’intervento tra aprile e giugno del 2017. It is one of the most debated issues in the financial sector, and not only there.

The term of the intervention system on the circulation, thanks to which the Czech National Bank prevents the exchange to fall under the threshold of 27 crowns per euro, is approaching: the central bank has confirmed it wants to interrupt the intervention between April and June 2017. What will be the consequences?

Preventing speculative bubbles The conclusion of the intervention regime on the crown has repeatedly been postponed in the past three and a half years. A first term was expected at the end of 2015, then postponed to the first half and then the end of 2016.

Despite all these delays, the deadline of 2017 seems quite likely. The conditions, established by the Czech National Bank for the end of the interventions, seem

In realtà, secondo i dati dell’Ufficio di Statistica Ceco, la crescita del valore aggiunto nei settori dell’industria manifatturiera ha seguito pressappoco la crescita del volume della produzione del Pil. Allo stesso tempo nel 2014 e nel 2015 è aumentato il numero dei brevetti e delle licenze fornite dalle imprese ceche. Va tuttavia sottolineato che il numero delle aziende, che riescono a vendere la licenza per l’uso di un brevetto, sono appena una quarantina. Similmente soltanto un decimo dei brevetti validi in Repubblica Ceca proviene da soggetti cechi.

Alla luce di questi dati si può quindi affermare che la svalutazione non ha impigrito in maniera sensibile la capacità innovativa dell’industria ceca, che tuttavia rimane ancora abbastanza bassa.

Sebbene gli esportatori siano tradizionalmente a favore della corona debole, la fine dell’intervento non sembra preoccuparli troppo. Secondo le loro previsioni nella prima metà dell’anno le esportazioni dovrebbero crescere dell’otto percento all’anno grazie soprattutto all’atteof the Czech productions, revealing a factor which led to the sluggishness of the national economy and thus to a deterioration in the competitiveness of companies.

In fact, according to the Czech Statistical Office data, the growth of value added in the manufacturing sectors has roughly followed the growth of the volume of production of the GDP. At the same time in 2014 and in 2015, the number of patents and licenses given by Czech companies increased.

It should however be emphasized that the number of companies, who manage to sell the license for use of a patent, is barely forty. Similarly, only a tenth of the patents valid in the Czech Republic comes from Czech subjects.

In light of these facts, it can be said that the devaluation has not made the innovative ability of Czech industry

Ad esempio, nei tre anni della svalutazione della corona le importazioni delle automobili sono aumentate del 23,5 percento, quelle dell’abbigliamento e delle calzature di più del venti percento o gli elettrodomestici del 19,8 percento. Anche le ripercussioni sul turismo all’estero sembrano contenute. Nel 2014 si è effettivamente registrato un calo significativo dei viaggi all’estero ma il settore ha registrato una ripresa nel 2015. Lo scorso anno invece il numero dei viaggi estivi all’estero è calato di circa il dieci percento, mentre i pernottamenti negli alberghi cechi da parte dei turisti domestici è cresciuto dell’otto percento. «A influenzare fortemente il dato eight percent a year, thanks mainly to the expectation of recovery of the eurozone economies and a strong dynamic expansion of Germany. “But for the second half of the year the expectations are not so rosy. The main reason is the lack of the workforce, which significantly lowers the forecasts”, says the vice president Daněk.

According to business associations, due to the lack of workers, in 2016 companies have had to give up to orders for 150 billion crowns.

The proposed strengthening of the crown could reinvigorate the internal market. The devaluation has made the imports from the eurozone more expensive. However, the recovery and the increased spending power of Czechs have largely compensated for this difficulty. For example, in the three years of the devaluation of the

crown, imports of cars rose by 23.5 percent, clothing and footwear imports by more than twenty percent and household electrical appliances by 19.8 percent. Also the impact on tourism abroad seem contained. In 2014, a significant drop in foreign travel was registered, but the sector picked up in 2015. Last year, however,

the number of summer trips abroad fell by about ten percent, while overnight stays in Czech hotels from domestic tourists grew by eight percent.

“What strongly influenced the data, however, was the lack of safety they sensed in many of the favorite foreign destinations”, stressed the Association of Czech Travel Agencies.

«Ma le nostre previsioni non tengono conto del fatto che il rafforzamento potrà essere rallentato dalle assicurazioni sul cambio stipulate dagli esportatori e dalla chiusura di posizioni di investitori finanziari. Gli effetti di questi acquisti potrebbero portare addirittura a una svalutazione della corona dopo la conclusione dell’intervento sul corso» sostiene il governatore Rusnok. La Banca Nazionale Ceca rimane comunque pronta a intervenire, qualora si verificassero sbalzi eccessivi in uno o nell’altro senso.

But in the end will the Crown get stronger?

A slight strengthening of the crown will therefore have a positive impact on the internal market but it will combine with other factors, such as wage increases, thus not proving to be predominant.

Also because the extent of the strengthening remains somewhat uncertain. According to the Association of exporters the exchange ratio could return to the same level as the previous one at the intervention of the central bank. Even official estimates of the Czech National Bank predict a strengthening. “But our forecasts do not take into account the fact that the reinforcement can be slowed by foreign exchange hedge stipulated by the exporters and the closure of positions of financial investors. The effects of these purchases could even lead to a devaluation of the crown after the conclusion of the intervention on the circulation”, says the governor Rusnok.

The Czech National Bank remains ready to intervene, should there be excessive swings in one direction or another.

“I didn’t sign it, but only because no one came to ask me”. Miloš Zeman, President of the Czech Republic, in an interview published on January the 8th, 2017, by the tabloid Blesk, among the most widely read in the country.

The document in question is the Charter 77, the most famous letter at the times of communist Czechoslovakia,

which came to light on January the 6th, 1977. A collection of signatures which set off the biggest movement of civil resistance in the country, and which in 1989, brought its first and most recognizable signatory, Václav Havel, to the presidency of the democratic Czechoslovakia. “And anyway communism fell mainly thanks to Gorbačev, rather

Is there a touch of bitterness?

Charta 77. Scripta manent The Charter 77 is a story that begins in the middle of the years of normalization in the ‘70s, when the grey of the Soviet rifles mingled with the grey of politics, the grey of films in poor qual-

Nel marzo 1976 una delle tante retate contro i vlasatci, i capelloni, durante un festival musicale a pochi chilometri da Praga. La polizia fece 27 arresti “per premeditato disturbo dell’ordine pubblico”. Il processo, sei mesi più tardi, mandò in carcere diversi membri della band più nota del circuito, i Plastic People of the Universe, con sentenze tra gli 8 e i 18 mesi.

Fu la tanto attesa scintilla che, per uno sparuto gruppo di intellettuali, accese il fuoco del dissenso. L’11 dicembre di quell’anno diversi amici si riunirono a casa del fotografo praghese Jaroslav Kořán. Si decise di sfruttare i recenti Accordi di Helsinki del 1975, in cui la

Cecoslovacchia e la maggior parte dei paesi europei, al di qua o al di là della cortina di ferro, si impegnavano in diversi temi tra cui (punto VII del trattato) “il rispetto dei diritti dell’uomo e delle libertà fondamentali”. Fu scritta una lettera aperta, a metà tra una petizione ed un manifesto politico.

Si parlava di “un’associazione libera, aperta e informale”, fatta di persone “unite dalla volontà di perseguire individualmente e collettivamente il rispetto per i diritti umani e civili”. Quattro i principali redattori: Václav Havel, drammaturgo, Jan Patočka, filosofo, Pavel Kohout, scrittore e Jiří Hájek, ex ministro degli Esteri al tempo della Primavera di Praga (a cui si deve, probabilmente, l’appunto di diritto internazionale sul rispetto degli Accordi).

Ma un documento con poche firme in calce non sarebbe valso granché.

La firma a Helsinki della Repubblica Socialista Cecoslovacca doveva trovare un’eco beffarda nelle firme dei suoi cittadini.Il gruppo di dissidenti cominciò il passaparola, nei giorni di Natale del 1976, per raccogliere il maggior numero di firme. Attività non priva di

Days when rock music, hidden in the countryside or in the darkness of cellars, annoyed a selfrighteous regime, despite the relative hold of the uneasy listening psychedelic music on the public. In March 1976, in one of many raids against vlasatci, the hippies, during a music festival a

few kilometres from Prague, the police made 27 arrests for “premeditated disturbance of public order”. The trial, six months later, led to several members of the band’s best-known circuit, the Plastic People of the Universe, being sent to prison, with sentences ranging from 8 to 18 months. It was the long-awaited spark, which for a small group of intel-

lectuals, fueled the fire of dissent. On 11 December of that year, several friends gathered at the home of Prague photographer Jaroslav Kořán. They decided to take advantage of the recent Helsinki Accords of 1975, when Czechoslovakia and most of the European countries, within or beyond the Iron Curtain, were engaged in various themes including

(point VII of the Treaty) “respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms”. An open letter was written, a cross between a petition and a political manifesto. There was talk of “a free, open and informal association”, made up of people “united by the desire to individually and collectively pursue the respect for human and civil rights”. Four

major editors: Václav Havel, a playwright, philosopher Jan Patočka, writer Pavel Kohout, and Jiří Hájek, the former foreign minister at the time of the Prague Spring (to whom we probably owe, the right of international law on the enforcement of agreements). However, a document with a few signatures would not be worth much. The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic’s signing in Helsinki had to find a derisive echo in the signatures of its citizens. The group of dissidents began informing people about it by word of mouth, during Christmas of 1976, to collect as many signatures they could, in an activity not lacking in risks. The identity of the first signatories was a colourful mix: academics, catholics, rockers. Signatures of those actors of the counterculture, who in their own way, lived in the “parallel

Charta 77. Le conseguenze Vratislav Brabenec è lo storico sassofonista dei Plastic People of the Universe. In un’intervista per Radio Free Europe, all’indomani del quarantesimo anniversario di Charta 77, il 73enne Vratislav ha ricordato il

documento come una lettera assolutamente normale, nulla di eccessivo: “non chiamava certo alla rivolta”. Eppure c’era la sensazione che avrebbe portato guai. E infatti questi non tardarono ad arrivare.

Diversi firmatari furono arrestati, le loro case perquisite. Havel cominciò a far conoscenza con le carceri cecoslovacche, da cui entrò ed uscì di frequente sino alla caduta del regime.

C’è chi subì conseguenze peggiori. Il 3 marzo 1977 il 69enne Jan Patočka, tra i maggiori filosofi europei, allievo di Edmund Husserl e Martin Heidegger, veniva brutalmente interrogato per oltre dieci ore dalla polizia praghese. Sfinito e malato, accusò un malore. Morì dieci giorni dopo.

Il regime reagì in maniera isterica. Il segretario per le questioni ideologiche, Vasil Biľak (anche lui in campo nella Primavera, ma da collaborazio-

Pochi giorni dopo il primo arresto di Havel il Rudé Právo pubblicava l’articolo denigratorio “Ztroskotanci a samozvanci”, “i perdenti e gli usurpatori”.

Furono organizzate manifestazioni contro i chartisti, prima forzando in piazza comuni cittadini, poi sfruttando l’immagine di artisti tra i più popolari, come il cantante Karel Gott o l’attore comico Jan Werich. Volti noti costretti a firmare un documento di contrarietà ai nemici del regime e partecipare ad eventi pubblici. Paradossalmente,

l’impegno per annichilire il movimento (che in realtà superò appena le duemila firme all’inizio del 1990), non fece altro che ingigantirne l’immagine. Soprattutto all’estero, dove Char-

fortieth anniversary of Charter 77, the 73 year-old Vratislav remembered the document as a perfectly normal letter, nothing excessive, “certainly not a call for revolt”. Yet there was the feeling that it would bring trouble. In fact, it did not take long to arrive.

Several signatories were arrested, and their homes searched. Havel began to get to know the Czechoslovak prisons, from which he went in and out frequently

until the fall of the regime. There are those who suffered worse consequences.

On 3 March 1977, the 69 year-old Jan Patočka, among the major European philosophers, and student of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, was brutally interrogated for over ten hours by the Prague police. Exhausted and sick, he fell ill. He died ten days later.

The regime reacted hysterically. The secretary for ideological questions, Vasil

Biľak (who was also in the field during the Spring, but as collaborator of the Soviets), pounded his fists on the table of the Presidium of the Party: thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of people would sign the document if they didn’t act on time. The researcher Paulina Bren, in her book “The Greengrocer and his TV”, (2010), tells of how the regime set foot in the biggest media spectacle of the normalization: the antiCharta. A few days after the first arrest of Havel Rudé Právo published the disparaging article “Ztroskotanci a samozvanci”, “the losers and usurpers”. Demonstrations against the Chartists were organized, first forcing ordinary citizens to the streets, then exploiting the images of the most popular artists, such as singer Karel Gott and comedy actor Jan Werich. Familiar faces forced to sign a document of opposition to the enemies of the regime and take part in public events. Paradoxically, the effort to annihilate the movement (which actually just passed the two thousand signature mark in early 1990), only managed to strengthen its image. Contro la nuova Repubblica Ceca Charta 77 è anche in una foto di Tomki Němec esposta al DOX di Praga, in una retrospettiva su Havel a ottant’anni dalla sua nascita (in mostra sino a marzo 2017). Datata 23 agosto 2008, a prima vista mostra due vecchietti, vestiti in modo trascurabile, pettinati anche peggio. Seduti su una panchina a Trutnov, i personaggi ritratti non sono altro che Václav Havel e Ivan Jirous. Per curiosità, fingendo di non riconoscere il poeta, chiediamo ad una visitatrice, una giovane di non più di venticinque anni, catalogo dell’esposizione sottobraccio, chi sia quel tal Jirous nella foto con l’ex-presidente.

Havel, mito che rimane sentito tra i giovani “liberal” della capitale. Non solo i nomi, ma anche le idee del movimento sono sempre più fuori luogo nel percorso politico della Cechia di oggi, che ha volutamente abbandonato il suo ruolo (manufatto della presidenza dello stesso Havel) di portabandiera delle libertà fondamentali della nuova Europa.

Ultimo esempio a metà gennaio 2017, quando 160 dei firmatari di Charta 77 (che oggi è una fondazio-

ne), hanno chiesto al governo ceco di intervenire per promuovere i diritti civili in Cina, consapevoli del fatto che “se la comunità internazionale non ci avesse aiutato quarant’anni fa, il regime ci avrebbe liquidato”. Ma il Presidente Zeman e il governo del socialdemocratico Bohuslav Sobotka hanno impostato un atteggiamento decisamente più cinico sui diritti umani e il mercato estero. Charta 77 è una voce ormai minoritaria, debole.

La voce di un anziano.

Il Paese viaggia su un treno diverso, in direzione di un pragmatismo decisamente meno etico. Così l’atteggiamento del Presidente Zeman, teso a minimizzare il movimento, non ha destato troppo stupore. Non che il giovane Miloš non abbia avuto le sue rogne dal regime, anzi. Iscrittosi come tanti al Partito nell’entusiasmo sessantottino, ne fu espulso due anni dopo per non aver tenuto la bocca chiusa contro gli alleati-invasori del patto di Varsavia. a young girl of no more than twentyfive, the exhibition catalog under his arm, who Jirous, the man pictured with the former president was.

“I don’t know, I’ve never heard of him.

But I can ask the girl of the museum at the entrance of the hall”. We thanked her anyway. On the other hand, it is not a surprise. The protagonists of Charter 77 have ended up in Havel’s shadow, a myth that remains heard among the young “liberals” in the capital. Not only the names, but also the ideas of the movement are increasingly out of place in the political

path of today’s Czech Republic, which has deliberately abandoned its role (a relic of the Presidency of Havel) as a bearer of the fundamental freedoms of the new Europe.

The latest example dates back only to mid-January 2017, when 160 of the signatories of Charter 77 (which is now a foundation), asked the Czech government to take action to promote civil rights in China, aware that “if the international community had not helped us forty years ago, the regime would have got rid of us”. However, President Zeman and the government of the So-

cial Democrat Bohuslav Sobotka have set a much more cynical attitude on human rights, and the foreign market. Charter 77 is a now a minor, weak voice. The voice of an elder.

The country travels on a different train, in the direction of a decidedly less ethical pragmatism. Consequently, the attitude of President Zeman, aimed at minimizing the movement, has not aroused too much amazement. Not that the young Miloš did not have his share of friction with the regime, indeed. He enrolled in the Party like many of his enthusiastic peers in ‘68,

zione sportiva, poi per un’azienda di programmazione agricola, prima di venire licenziato nell’agosto ‘89 per un articolo di critica economica intitolato Prognostika a přestavba, “Previsioni e ricostruzione”. Charta 77 e Zeman, in fondo, erano dalla stessa parte.

Ma nel grande insieme dai contorni sfumati degli antagonisti del regime, Charta 77 ebbe il coraggio di un’azione collettiva, duratura, disperata.

Minimizzare la sua storia è ancora una volta una mossa di pragmatismo politico. Una real politik che, dalla crisi dei diritti universali alla crisi migratoria, sembra essere molto in voga di questi tempi. Quanto alla memoria storica ed alla firma mancata, torna utile citare il vecchio Frank Zappa: “è il mainstream a venire da te, ma sei tu che devi andare dall’underground”. Zappa che, guarda caso, fu l’autore nel 1967 del pezzo “Plastic People” che segnò particolarmente la vita di alcuni giovani musicisti cecoslovacchi... but was expelled two years later for not having kept his mouth shut against the Ally-invaders of the Warsaw Pact.

He worked for years in sports organization, then for a company of agricultural programming, before being fired in August 1989 for an article of economic criticism entitled Prognostika a přestavba, “Forecasts and reconstruction”. Charter 77 and Zeman, after all, were on the same side. But overall within the shady contours of the regime’s opponents, Charter 77 had the courage of collective, enduring desperate action. Minimizing its history is once again a political pragmatist move. A real politik, which from the crisis of universal rights to the migration crisis, seems to be in vogue these days. As for the historical memory and the lack of a signature it is useful to quote the late Frank Zappa: “The mainstream comes to you, but you have to go to the underground”. Zappa who, coincidentally, was the author in 1967 of the track “Plastic People”, which particularly marked the life of some young Czechoslovak musicians...

Il ministro dell’Interno Milan Chovanec, socialdemocratico, annuncia una proposta di legge che autorizzerebbe i cittadini a utilizzare le armi non solo per difesa personale, ma anche quando sussistano esigenze di difesa nazionale e di sicurezza pubblica. Tipico l’esempio di fronteggiare un attacco terroristico o di un folle. Non mancano le critiche. Il ministro della Giustizia, Robert Pelikán (Ano), ne parla come di una proposta incredibilmente sospetta e assurda. “Non siamo nel Far West”.

Si tratta della normativa che rende più severe le previsioni in materia di conflitto di interessi e che riguarda direttamente il leader di Ano, Andrej Babiš. Furibonda la reazione del vicepremier e miliardario, il quale accusa il premier Bohuslav Sobotka (Čssd), alleato di coalizione, di essere un traditore.

A darne notizia è lo stesso capo della diplomazia ceca, Lubomír Zaorálek, secondo il quale la sua casella di posta elettronica e quella dei suoi vice sono state oggetto per mesi di attacchi hacker di provenienza straniera. Sospetti sulla Russia.

CRONACA (14 dicembre) Frodi ai fondi Ue, arresti. Una vasta operazione della polizia condotta nella Regione della Boemia del nord e di Karlovy Vary, porta al fermo e alla denuncia di 24 persone, compresi una serie di notabili, tra cui l’ex governatrice Jana Vaňhová, socialdemocratica. Sono accusati di abusi nella utilizzazione del programma operativo regionale Severozápad, che avrebbero provocato danni per miliardi di corone.

--------------------------------------------------------------(6 gennaio) Torna l’influenza aviaria. Era da dieci anni che non avveniva. I primi focolai vengono accertati in due piccoli allevamenti di pollame in Moravia sud e in alcuni cigni morti nella zona. Si tratta di un virus ad alta patogenicità del ceppo H5, secondo quanto comunicato dalle autorità veterinarie.

ECONOMIA, AFFARI E FINANZA (9 dicembre) Approvata legge anti fumo. A partire dal prossimo 31 maggio, divieto assoluto di fumo nei locali pubblici in Repubblica Ceca.

La data non è casuale, in quanto si celebra la Giornata mondiale senza tabacco. La legge è approvata nella sua versione più rigida, escludendo la possibilità che nei locali possano esserci spazi riservati per fumatori. Si arrende anche il presidente Miloš Zeman, fumatore incallito, sempre oppostosi a questa normativa, che decide di firmare la promulgazione. Con questa legge la Repubblica Ceca si adegua a quanto già disposto in 22 paesi Ue. ---------------------------------------------------------------

(13 dicembre) Škoda Auto prima in export. La casa automobilistica si è nuovamente aggiudicata il titolo di Azienda esportatrice dell’anno, davanti a Foxconn e Agrofert. Si tratta della medesima sequenza dello scorso anno. Dai dati emerge che il valore delle vendite all’estero delle prime venti aziende in classifica è cresciuto del 40% negli ultimi cinque anni.

--------------------------------------------------------------(13 dicembre) Plzeňský Prazdroj in mani giapponesi. Il colosso nipponico della birra, Asahi Group Holdings, raggiunge infatti un accordo per aggiudicarsi le attività SabMiller in Europa orientale, fra cui anche la compagnia ceca. L’offerta complessiva è di 7,3 miliardi di euro, quasi 200 miliardi di corone. L’operazione dovrebbe esser conclusa nella prima metà del 2017. La vendita di questi asset – compresi quelli in Polonia, Ungheria, Romania e Slovacchia - è una delle condizioni per la fusione di SabMiller con Anheuser-Busch InBev. --------------------------------------------------------------(13 dicembre) Progetto di navigabilità dell’Oder.

La Repubblica Ceca e la Polonia decidono di predisporre un team di esperti che se ne occuperà.

La parte del fiume interessata è quella che va da Ostrava alla città polacca di Kozle (KedzierzynKozle). E’ quanto scaturisce dall’incontro fra il premier Bohuslav Sobotka e la omologa polacca Beata Szydłová.

Il numero dei turisti che alloggiano in appartamenti privati servendosi di questa applicazione e di altre simili è cresciuto quest’anno in Repubblica Ceca, sino a fine settembre, del 40%, raggiungendo la cifra di 2,2 milioni di persone.

--------------------------------------------------------------(15 dicembre) La Mountfield diventa cinese.

La più grande catena commerciale ceca, specializzata in articoli per il giardinaggio e per il bricolage, cinque miliardi di corone di fatturato, viene comprata dalla cinese Eurasia Development Group Limited. Raggiunto un accordo con il fondatore, Ivan Drbohlav, il quale cede il suo 71,5%. Si parla di un corrispettivo di alcuni miliardi di corone.

--------------------------------------------------------------(15 dicembre) Alipay attivata anche in Rep. Ceca. Si tratta di un sistema cinese di pagamenti via telefoni cellulari, utilizzato da 450 milioni di utenti, che permette ai turisti provenienti dalla Cina di effettuare acquisti con lo smartphone. La licenza per la Rep. Ceca e per la Slovacchia è stata affidata alla Sims Management.

Dopo ben 32 anni giungono al termine i lavori di realizzazione della autostrada che collega Praga con il confine della Germania, in direzione Dresda.

Via libera all’ultimo tratto di 12 km in Boemia del nord, anche se alcuni problemi rimangono. Esiste infatti il sospetto di instabilità geologica all’altezza di un viadotto.

--------------------------------------------------------------(7 gennaio) Cinema cechi da record. Nel 2016 hanno contato 14 milioni di spettatori, cifra mai raggiunta in precedenza. Nel 2015 erano stati 12,9 milioni. Il giro d’affari complessivo è salito a 1,8 miliardi (1,67 nel 2015). Nel paese sono in funzione 700 cinema, di cui 29 multisala. I biglietti mediamente costano 128,8 corone.

Il gruppo assicurativo, il principale del paese, affida a Miroslav Singer (48 anni), già numero uno della Česká národní banka, l’incarico di direttore delle relazioni istituzionali e di capo economista di Generali CEE Holding. Entro i prossimi mesi è destinato a diventare presidente del consiglio di sorveglianza di Česka pojistovna, la compagnia di assicurazioni, del gruppo Generali.

Il ministero della Difesa della Repubblica Ceca conta di investire nei prossimi dieci anni la somma di 180 miliardi di corone, di cui 130 miliardi da destinare alle forze di terra. Lo annuncia il ministro Martin Stropnický (Ano), nel corso di una conferenza stampa insieme agli altri vertici del dicastero e delle forze armate. Nel corso di quest’anno saranno acquistati 62 veicoli blindati Pandur e Tito e modernizzati 33 obici semoventi Dana. Per quanto riguarda il previsto acquisto di 12 elicotteri multiuso, Stropnický intende presentare la relativa proposta al governo entro il primo semestre 2017.

Nel 2016 lo stabilimento di Vysoké Mýto ha prodotto 3.885 autobus, superando di 157 mezzi il record dell’anno prima. Il 94% della produzione viene venduta all’estero, soprattutto in Francia, Germania, Italia e Slovacchia. Il modello di maggior successo è il Crossway, veicolo per il trasporto di passeggeri per il corto medio raggio.

--------------------------------------------------------------(31 gennaio) Cresce export di armi e materiale militare. Nel 2016 raggiunge la cifra record di 700-750 milioni di euro (19-20 miliardi di corone), con un incremento fra il 20% e il 30% rispetto al 2015. Si pensa che nel corso del 2017 l’incremento sarà meno elevato, anche perché le aziende ceche sono al limite della capacità produttiva, secondo quanto dichiara Jiří Hynek, presidente dell’associazione industrie difesa e sicurezza.

VARIE (1 dicembre) Unesco tutela arte marionettistica boema. Riconosciuto il ruolo di fenomeno culturale e sociale, la cui espansione di massa sui territori boemi risale alla metà del XIX secolo.

I marionettisti che all’epoca usavano la lingua ceca divennero parte del processo di rinascita nazionale.

Si tratta della scienziata Eva Zažímalová, esperta di chimica biologica, eletta nuova presidente della prestigiosa istituzione, carica per la quale era unico candidato. L’avvicendamento con l’attuale presidente, Jiří Drahoš, a fine mandato, avverrà a marzo.

Historical photographs, some never displayed before, which will bring the visitors back to the capital in the 19th and 20th centuries. The pictures show the people and their crafts, the face of the city with the activities and means of transport of the time, and invite you to follow the changes which occurred in the space of about 120 years, and experience differences and similarities. Iscrizioni aperte alla sezione italo-ceca “Per noi sono tutti belli”. È questo lo slogan scelto Il 6 aprile, presso il Centro Documentale dell’Eser- della scuola Guth-Jarkovský dalla Mezza Maratona Sportisimo di Praga per la sua 19° edizione. Un invito rivolto a chiunque voglia cimentarsi in una delle più veloci mezze maratone al mondo, competizione con una capacità di 11.500 corridori e un percorso che attraversa il centro storico di una città nota per la sua bellezza. Parte del circuito RunCzech, fondato da Carlo Capalbo, la corsa vanta l’Etichetta d’oro della IAAF ed è solo l’evento iniziale di un calendario che prosegue con la Maratona di Praga di inizio maggio e le quattro mezze maratone di Karlovy Vary, České Budějovice, Olomouc e Ústí nad Labem. Nata a Roma il 21 aprile 1918, era un corpo militare formato da volontari cecoslovacchi, perlopiù prigionieri di guerra e disertori, i cui due simboli erano il falco (sokol) sul cappello d’alpino e il pugnale degli arditi. Combattevano contro il dominio austro-ungarico per l’indipendenza della loro patria e furono impegnati sul fronte del Piave nel 1918. L’iniziativa rientra nel Programma ufficiale delle commemorazioni del Centenario della prima Guerra mondiale a cura della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri. L’istituto è il primo in Repubblica Ceca ad avere una sezione italo-ceca e un programma formativo bilingue focalizzato sulla lingua e la cultura dei due Paesi. L’aggiunta dello studio dell’inglese e una serie di iniziative quali gemellaggi e soggiorni di studio all’estero favoriscono ancor più la didattica multilingue e multiculturale. Registration is open for the Italian-Czech “All runners are beautiful”. This is the slogan cho- On April the 6th, at the Documentation Centre of the section of the Guth-Jarkovský school sen by the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon for its 19th edition. A call to anyone who wants to engage in one of the fastest half marathons in the world, a competition with a capacity of 11,500 runners, and a route through the historical centre of a city known for its beauty. It is part of the RunCzech circuit, founded by Carlo Capalbo; the race boasts the Gold Label of the IAAF, and is only the initial event of a calendar continuing with the Prague Marathonat the beginning of May and the four half marathons of Karlovy Vary, České Budějovice, Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem. Army in Milan, will hold a conference “Sokol, Pen and Dagger”, dedicated to the Czechoslovak Legion in Italy. Born in Rome, on April 21, 1918, it was a military body formed by Czechoslovak volunteers, mostly prisoners of war and deserters, whose two symbols were the hawk (Sokol) on the Alpine hat, and the dagger of the Arditi. They fought against the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the independence of their homeland and were engaged on the front of the Piave in 1918. The initiative is part of the official program of the commemorations of the centenary of the First World War, by the Council of Ministers Presidency. Among the various speakers we must mention journalist Sergio Tazzer, also President of the WWI documentation centre Cedos. www.alpinimilanocentro.it

In April enrollment will be open for the year 20172018 at Jiří Guth-Jarkovský school in Prague, a school that covers the first cycle of Czech education, from first to ninth grade, corresponding to elementary and secondary levels in Italy. The institute is the first in the Czech Republic to have an Italian-Czech section, and a bilingual education program focused on the language and culture of both countries. The addition of English studies, and a series of initiatives such as twinning and studying abroad even further reinforce the multilingual and multicultural teachings. The work of the School, which reaches its third school year, is supported, among others, by the Czech Ministry of Education, by the Italian Embassy of Prague and the Italian Institute of Culture. new.truhla.cz

How the ideology of those times influenced fashion in old Czechoslovakia, in contrast to the bourgeois elegance of the 1930’s

Siamo ciò che indossiamo. Un’affermazione non sempre vera. Nei quattro decenni in cui la Cecoslovacchia fu guidata dal partito comunista, non si può dire che la moda rappresentasse la personalità del singolo individuo ma fu sicuramente lo specchio di un’epoca. Tra il 1948 e il 1989 l’abbigliamento era indissolubilmente legato al contesto storico e politico, rispecchiava le violente trasformazioni sociali e gli ideali del regime totalitario. È l’epoca dei tepláky, i tipici pantaloni di tuta blu e dei mrkváče, quelli dal taglio a carota, capi considerati in seguito orrendi ma che da qualche anno tornano a essere di moda.

We are what we wear. An assertion, however, that is not always true.

Considering the four decades – when Czechoslovakia was led by the Communist Party – it is wrong to say that fashion represented the personality of the single individual, but it was surely the mirror of an era. Between 1948 and 1989, clothing was inextricably tied to the historical and political context and reflected the violent social changes and ideals of the totalitarian regime. It was the era of tepláky, the typical blue sweatpants and of mrkváče, those with their carrot-fit trousers, that were later considered horrendous, but which have been coming back into fashion in the last few years.

Ma andiamo con ordine. Fra le due guerre l’arte sartoriale e la moda ceca vissero

una fase di tale fioritura che non fu più eguagliata in seguito. Se le sarte della capitale s’ispiravano a Parigi, i vestiti cuciti nei saloni moravi risentivano anche dell’influenza di Vienna.

Nei tre anni successivi al 1945 si tentò di tornare al livello prebellico, ma “nel 1948, assieme al sistema politico, nel nostro Paese cambiò la vita dalle fondamenta” spiega l’autrice del libro.

“All’attenzione degli ideologi non sfuggì nemmeno la moda”. Gli abiti divennero un mezzo con cui influenzare il pensiero ed educare i cittadini del nuovo stato cecoslovacco. Il regime comunista vietò qualsiasi ispirazione al mondo occidentale e promise di creare uno stile proprio che non avrebbe solo garantito i bisogni della popolazione impoverita dalla guerra ma sarebbe stato bello, colorato e competitivo.

L’attuazione di questi grandi piani si scontrò ben presto con la realtà. In-

Published by Grada, it contains over three hundred photographs, documents and articles from the magazines of that period. On the one hand, it outlines the development of the styles and relationship with Western models, the compliance and opposition to the imposed dictates; on the other, it recounts the artist’s creative effort, the fate of the most famous fashion houses in Prague and the creation of state-owned sector enterprises, such as Textilní tvorba.

But first things first. Between the two wars, Czech sartorial art and fashion went through a flourishing phase that was never equalled in the years

that followed. If the seamstresses of the capital were inspired by Paris, the clothes that were sewn in the Moravian salons were also subject to the influence of Vienna.

During the next three years after 1945, there was an attempt to return to prewar levels, but “in 1948, together with the political system, life in the Country changed radically”, explains the author of the book. “Even fashion caught the attention of the ideologists”. Clothing became a means by which to influence public opinion and a way to educate the citizens of the new Czechoslovak state. The communist regime forbade any inspiration from the Western world and promised to create its own style, that was intended not only to guarantee the needs of the population, impoverished by the war, but was

La sfida maggiore, tuttavia, era definire la nuova moda dell’Europa orientale.

Era facile dire di non ispirarsi a Parigi o Londra, un po’ meno stabilire cosa creare. Per supervisionare lo sviluppo di questo campo, coordinare tutte le imprese che erano state nazionalizzate una dopo l’altra e istruire gli stilisti, nel 1949 venne istituita Textilní tvorba, impresa statale che riuniva i più grandi esperti del settore tessile e dell’abbigliamento. Le parole d’ordine erano funzionalità, praticità e semplicità. Decorazioni al minimo e capi facili da portare, che si trattasse di tute e grembiuli da lavoro o di

abiti mondani e da sera. La nuova icona è la donna che lavora in fabbrica. “Furono vietate le variazioni di colletti, i risvolti, le tasche finte sulle giacche perché la tasca, se non serviva a nulla, non aveva motivo d’esistere” dice la Hlaváčková e racconta anche come fosse rischioso portare il cappello. “Dopo il 1948 il cappello rappresentava un abito borghese.

Alle donne era consigliato indossare il fazzoletto, allacciato sotto il collo come le nonne, visto come l’abito del proletariato”. Un abbigliamento che però non piaceva a nessuno, a partire dalle donne lavoratrici a cui era dedicato. Furono proprio loro a ribellarsi contro una moda lontana dalle promesse iniziali, tanto da costringere i teorici a cambiare strada. La seconda ispirazione fu quella popolare. I costumi tradizionali moravi erano considerati più slavi di quelli boemi ma anche le loro maniche larghe si rivelarono poco pratiche.

supposed to be elegant, colourful and competitive.

However, the implementation of these great plans soon collided with reality. In first place, there was a lack of manpower. Many textile factories were located in Sudetenland and, following the expulsion of the Germans, had been left without workers, managers and owners. “Another big issue was the lack of raw materials, that we have always had to import”, Hlaváčková explains. The biggest challenge, though,

was to define this new Eastern European fashion. It was easy to say that they were not to follow or be inspired

by Parisian or London fashion, but it was rather difficult to establish exactly what to create. In order to supervise the development of the sector and coordinate all the companies, that had been nationalized one after the other, and to train the designers, in 1949 the Textilní tvorba state enterprise was set up, that brought together some of the finest experts in the textile and clothing

sector. The keywords were: functionality, practicality and simplicity. Decorations had to be kept to a minimum and easy to wear garments were made, whether it was intended for working clothes and aprons or for worldly and evening clothing. Women workers became the new icon. “Variations to collars were prohibited as well as trouser turn-ups; fake pockets on jackets were not allowed, because if the pocket had no practical function, then it had no reason to exist”, says Hlaváčková, who also explains that it was risky even to wear a hat. “After 1948, hats were considered a bourgeois item of clothing. Women were advised to wear a head scarf, tied under the chin, just as their grandmothers used to do, and was considered a typical proletariat apparel”. However, nobody liked it, not even women workers for whom it was originally intended. It was they, in fact, who protested against this type of fashion that was distant from the initial promise. Their action was so effective that the theorists eventu-

È del 1956 la dichiarazione, apparsa sulle pagine della rivista Žena a móda, in cui il partito ammette di aver sbagliato e si apre ai trend internazionali. Se le ragazze subirono il fascino della minigonna, i jeans continuavano a essere considerati una provocazione. Parte oggi banale dell’armadio di chiunque e nati come pantaloni per i lavoratori, nella Cecoslovacchia comunista erano il simbolo dell’imperialismo e di una ribellione contro l’establishment. Solo i più fortunati riuscivano a procurarsene un paio da Tuzex, una rete di negozi che vendeva, in cambio di buoni o valuta straniera, merce occidentale, introvabile altrove.

Non erano per tutte le tasche nemmeno le merci offerte alla Casa della Moda (Dům módy), il “tempio della moda comunista”, aperta nel 1956 in Piazza Venceslao, a Praga. Per que-

sto negozio venivano creati articoli speciali prodotti in piccole serie, data anche l’arretratezza dell’industria cecoslovacca.

Destinati a una ristretta cerchia di acquirenti e realizzati in pochi pezzi erano anche i modelli presentati alle sfilate locali o estere come successi dell’abbigliamento cecoslovacco. Erano frutto degli stilisti di Textilní tvorba che riuscirono a esprimere la propria creatività nonostante regole e divieti.

Eppure mancava qualcosa di originale, di realmente cecoslovacco nel panorama della moda, ammette la Hlaváčková. “Anche le case di moda che fra le due guerre vestivano famiglie importanti come i Baťa, compravano il copyright a Parigi e mettevano in vendita delle imitazioni”. L’unica eccezione, rimasta nella memoria anche all’estero, fu la collezione presentata all’Expo di Montréal del 1967 da Eva Fialová e Zdeňka Bauerová, artista accademica e stilista che nella

sua carriera ha disegnato circa duemila modelli e formato generazioni di designer cechi.

ally had to give in and change course.

The second inspiration came from the population. Traditional Moravian clothes were considered more Slavic than Bohemian ones, but even their wide sleeves proved to be impractical.

After Stalin’s death, there was a gradual loosening of ideological pressure. It was in the 1956 declaration – that appeared in the pages of the magazine Žena a móda – that the party admitted its mistakes and started to open up to international trends. If girls became attracted to the charm of the miniskirt, jeans continued to be considered a sort of provocation. A piece of clothing that nowadays may found easily in

any modern wardrobe. Although they were created originally as trousers for workers, in communist Czechoslovakia, however, they became the symbol of imperialism and rebellion against the establishment. Only a small number of lucky people were able to buy them from Tuzex, a chain of shops that sold Western clothes, unobtainable anywhere else, and that were sold in exchange for vouchers or foreign currency.

Also not affordable to most people were the clothes of the Fashion House (Dům módy), the “temple of communist fashion”, opened in 1956 in Wenceslas Square in Prague. Special products, on a small scale, were produced

for this shop, also due to the inferior standard of Czechoslovakian industry.

Intended for a small circle of buyers and produced in small numbers were also the fashion clothes presented at local and foreign fashion shows to highlight the successes of Czechoslovakian clothing. They were the result of the Textilní tvorba fashion designers, who were able to express their high level of creativity, despite the many rules and prohibitions.

However, something original and really Czechoslovakian was lacking in fashion, Hlaváčková admits. “Even the fashion houses, that dressed important families between the two wars, such as Baťa, bought the copyrights in Paris and sold imitations”. The only exception, which is still remembered even abroad, is the collection presented at Expo in Montreal in 1967 by Eva Fialová and Zdeňka Bauerová, the academic artist and fashion designer who, during her career, designed around two thousand dresses and trained generations of Czech fashion designers.

Ordinary people, however, could only afford less expensive fabrics.

This was the beginning of the era of artificial and synthetic fibres, the basic materials of the communist style: dederon (typical of East Ger-

stico della Germania Est), crimplene, chemlon e nylon. Nonostante facessero sudare, nell’epoca d’oro degli anni ‘60 ne erano tutti entusiasti perché non si sgualcivano e non serviva stirarli. Un vero e proprio boom e un grande cambiamento di vita per le donne che allora lavoravano.

Negli anni ‘70 varie tendenze dell’Europa occidentale ebbero una certa risonanza nella Cecoslovacchia comunista: l’era degli hippies e dei loro pantaloni a zampa d’elefante, gli stili etnici, un retrò che guardava agli anni ‘30 e ‘40 del Novecento e infine il punk. La richiesta di jeans era elevata, nacquero delle imitazioni e la versione slavata, i plísňáky. Le gonne si accorciavano, erano in voga i già citati vestiti di nylon, i pantaloni a carota e le imbottiture di gommapiuma. La moda degli anni ‘80 era tra le più eccentriche e pazze nel resto del mondo, dominata da colori accesi, minigonne e gonne a balze, maglie

a pipistrello, giacche e cappotti con le maniche rimboccate, ma anche maglioni di lana con colletti di trine o all’uncinetto, cinture larghe e fuseaux lucenti.

Eppure nei guardaroba della Cecoslovacchia socialista si percepiva moderazione. Non c’era scelta nei negozi e i pezzi migliori erano venduti sottobanco. I prodotti confezionati da un’industria rimasta indietro raramente soddisfacevano le aspettative.

Non restava che rivolgersi alle sarte o cucirseli da sé. “Negli anni ‘70 mi facevo fare i vestiti da una conoscente” ricorda Jana, una signora sulla cinquantina. “Tailleur, abiti estivi, pantaloni a zampa, cuciva tutto in due settimane e suscitavo sempre l’ammirazione dei compagni di classe”.

Alla carenza di buoni tessuti si ovviava rimettendo a nuovo i capi vecchi. I materiali del pre-guerra erano infatti di buona qualità. I fratelli minori ereditavano i vestiti dei maggiori, magari ri-

In the 1970s, various trends from Western Europe began to have a certain resonance in communist Czechoslovakia: the era of the hippies and their flared trousers and ethnic styles, that looked back to the 1930s and 1940s and finally the punk style. The demand for jeans was high and imitations began to appear, including the washed-out version, the plísňáky. Skirts became shorter and the aforementioned nylon clothes came into vogue again, as well as carrot cut trousers and foam padding. The fashion of the 1980s was amongst the most eccentric and craziest in the world, dominated by bright colours, ruffled mini-skirts and skirts, batwing sweaters, jackets and coats with rolled-up sleeves, but also wool sweaters with lace or crochet collars, wide belts and shiny leggings.

Yet, in the wardrobes of socialist Czechoslovakia the perception was one of moderation. There was little choice in the shops and the finest pieces were sold

La situazione di oggi? “Nel nostro Paese moda è ancora una parolaccia” dice la stilista Olo Křížová, ex direttrice dell’evento Prague Fashion Week. Nel campo della moda il Paese è rimasto indietro. I cechi spendono meno degli stati vicini per l’abbigliamento, prefe-

riscono la comodità a un taglio in voga e gli acquisti nelle grandi catene o online piuttosto che nei negozi specializzati. “Non si interessano alla moda, non è una loro priorità”. Un disinteresse in cui si può scorgere il riflesso dell’uniformità del periodo comunista che portò a “una devastazione della cultura” del vestirsi bene.

under the counter. Products made by an industry that was lagging, rarely met customers’ expectations. There was no alternative but to ask a seamstress to do the job or sew it yourself. “In the 1970s I had my clothes made by a person I used to know”, says Jana, a lady in her fifties.

“Tailleur, summer dresses, flared trousers, the seamstress was able to do everything in under two weeks and I always received the admiration of my classmates”.

The lack of good fabrics was obviated by refurbishing old clothing. The prewar fabrics were, in fact, of good quality. Younger children inherited these clothes from their older brothers and clothes were often altered with a little bit of imagination or made according to the styles presented in the Žena a móda or Dana a Dorka magazines.

It was only after 1989 that citizens and fashion began to flourish again. The mrkváče, that was imported from Hun-

gary, is available again on the shelves and has become the protagonists of a recent rediscovery. As we know, fashion comes and goes, but the phenomenon is quite surprising, because it was considered perhaps the ugliest piece of clothing of the communist era. Since 2009 there has been a rediscovery of that period, with the return of stonewashed jeans, neon colours, a high waist and padded shoulders.

And today’s situation? “In our Country, fashion is still considered a bad word”, says designer Olo Křížová, a former director of the Prague Fashion Week. The Country’s fashion industry has fallen behind. Czechs spend less than their neighbours for clothing and prefer comfort to fashionable clothes; they prefer to shop in the big chain stores or online rather than in high-fashion specialized shops.

“They are not interested in fashion and it is not their priority”. A lack of interest from which you may perceive a reflection of the uniformity of the communist period that led to the “devastation of the culture” of dressing well.

genius and achievements have made them immortal and famous to this day. Among those who deserve a special place in history there is surely the astrologer, astronomer and alchemist Tycho Brahe.

Born into an aristocratic family in Knutstorp, Denmark on December 14,

already an expert in astronomy – that the young Brahe decided to dedicate his life to the observation of the night sky. He studied rhetoric and philosophy in Copenhagen and then, in Leipzig and Wittenberg, he took up astrono-

Fu durante l’eclissi di luna del 21 agosto del 1560 che, non ancora quattordicenne, ma già esperto di astronomia, il giovane Brahe decise di consacrare la sua vita all’osservazione del cielo stellato. Studiò a Copenaghen retorica e filosofia, poi a Lipsia e Wittenberg astronomia, legge e matematica, con risultati sorprendenti per un giovane della sua età. Con i suoi studi volle conciliare il sistema tolemaico geocentrico con la nuova visione eliocentrica di Copernico, elaborando una sua particolare e originale visione del cosmo. L’11 novembre 1572 osservò l’esplosione di una supernova nella costellazione di Cassiopea. Descrisse questo avvenimento un anno dopo nell’opera De stella nova che gli procurò notevole fama perché assestava un colpo deciso alla concezione aristotelicotolemaica del cielo che voleva stelle e pianeti corpi immutabili e fissi.

che gli permise di costruire un laboratorio di osservazione del cielo, incredibile per la sua epoca, sull’isola di Hven, tra la Danimarca e la Svezia dove Brahe lavorò vent’anni. Ma in seguito alla morte di Federico, fu costretto a lasciare il suo regno dorato e le grandi ricchezze accumulate per incompatibilità con il nuovo sovrano e cercò rifugio presso la corte praghese di Rodolfo II d’Asburgo. Quando arrivò a Praga, nel 1599, la sua fama era già nota all’Imperatore che lo riteneva il miglior scienziato del suo tempo.

Una volta in città, Rodolfo lo volle incontrare da solo nella sala delle udienze. Si racconta che l’Imperatore al vederlo scese dal trono e gli strinse la mano; un onore, questo, che si tributava solo ai sovrani. Rodolfo II lo nominò subito astronomo e astrologo di corte e gli offrì come dimora il castello di Benátky nad Jizerou. Ma Brahe dell’Imperatore divenne anche amico intimo e sincero. A Rodolfo, Brahe consigliò di non sposarsi, perché i figli – sosteneva – gli avrebbero causato disgrazie, e il re gli diede ascolto, con sommo disappunto della sua famiglia e del Vaticano. Le doti di alchimista dello scienziato sono testimoniate da vari episodi. Da giovane, in seguito a un duello scaturito da una contesa su una formula matematica, perse il setto nasale e fu egli stesso a costruirsi una protesi in oro e rame che si attaccava al volto con un unguento adesivo misterioso di sua produzione. Creava leghe di metalli e pietre preziose, ma non volle mai svelare le sue scoperte in questo campo perché timoroso del fatto che potessero cadere nelle mani sbagliate. the throne and shook hands with him: an honour conferred only to a sovereign. Rudolf II immediately appointed him astronomer and astrologer of the court and offered him as a dwelling the Castle of Benátky nad Jizerou.

But Brahe also became an intimate and sincere friend of the Emperor. In Prague, he continued his studies also in medicine and alchemy and always had a great influence on the Emperor, who often called him for advice and astrological consultations, to such an extent that he soon aroused great envy

among his colleagues, that earned the Danish scientist the nickname of “evil spirit of the emperor”. Brahe advised Rudolf not to marry, because children – he argued – would have caused misfortunes. The king followed his advice, much to the disappointment of his family and the Vatican. The scientist’s alchemist skills are also witnessed in various episodes. When he was a young man, following a dispute over a mathematical formula, he lost his nasal septum and had to make a gold and copper prosthesis, himself, which he

He created alloys and precious stones, but never revealed his findings in this field, because he feared they would fall into the wrong hands. He was a staunch Lutheran, but this did not prevent him from being very superstitious. However, he supported the idea that human freedom was able to release the individual from celestial influences: “Astra inclinant, non determinant”. He produced astronomical instruments for Rudolf II, which were among the most advanced for that period, and he made major observational studies on the moon and comets that revolutionized the scientific conceptions of that period.

In 1600, a young and promising scientist arrived in Prague, invited by the Emperor to act as an assistant to the great Brahe. The young man and the

Sulla morte di Brahe si è detto e scritto molto e sono state avanzate

varie teorie, alcune anche molto fantasiose, come quella, ad esempio, che lo vuole deceduto in seguito allo scoppio della vescica, per non mancare di rispetto all’Imperatore alzan-

dosi da tavola per andare in bagno nel corso di un banchetto. Secondo alcuni lo scienziato morì per avvelenamento da mercurio durante uno dei suoi esperimenti alchemici; secondo altri si ammalò dopo un banchetto e morì a causa di un blocco renale, ma c’è anche chi sostiene che sia stato assassinato. Nel novembre del 2010 un team ceco-danese ha aperto la sua tomba e ha esaminato i suoi resti. Nei campioni prelevati è stato effettivamente trovato del mercurio, ma non in una concentrazione tale da poter minacciare la vita dell’astronomo. Non sono state quindi chiarite le circostanze esatte del decesso del grande scienziato, le cui cause rimangono ancora un mistero da oltre ormai 400 anni.

Pare che prima di morire, Brahe ripetè più volte la frase: “Ne frustra vixisse videar” (Non lasciate sembrare che sia vissuto invano). Alla sua morte, Rodolfo II, molto rattristato per l’evento, lo fece seppellire in pompa magna nella chiesa di Santa Maria in Týn ordinando che fosse eretto nella chiesa un monumento a grandezza naturale alla sua memoria. Sulla sua tomba venne fatta scrivere la seguente frase: “Non potere e ricchezza, ma solo Arte e Scienza sopravvivranno”.

The young assistant was called Johannes von Kepler and because of Brahe’s observations on the position of Mars, he was able years later to formulate his famous laws on planetary motion.

Brahe created an original cosmological theory, according to which even if the Earth was supposedly at the centre of the universe, only the Moon and the Sun went around it. The other planets, instead, rotated around the sun. In the Benátky nad Jizerou Observatory, Brahe and Kepler were able to revolutionize astronomy by work-

ing together until the old master’s death on October 24, 1601.

A lot has been said and written about Brahe’s death and various theories have been put forward, some of which also quite imaginative, such as the one where is supposed to have died because his bladder had burst, because he did not want to leave the table to go to the toilette during a banquet, so as not to be disrespectful to the Emperor.

According to some, the scientist died from mercury poisoning during one of his alchemic experiments; according to other she became ill after a banquet and died because of kidney failure; but there are also those who believe he was murdered. In November 2010, a Czech-Danish team opened his tomb to examine his remains. In the samples,

traces of mercury were found, but not in such high concentrations as to determine the death of the astronomer.

However, the exact circumstances of the death of this great scientist have never really been clarified and the cause still remains a mystery after over 400 years.

Before he died, Braheis believed to have repeated several times the phrase: “Ne frustra vixisse videar” (May I not seem to have lived in vain). On his death, Rudolf II, saddened by the event, had him buried with great pomp, in the church of Our Lady of Týn, giving orders that a life-size monument be erected in the church to his memory. The following words were inscribed on his tombstone: “Neither power nor wealth, only Art and Science will endure”.

Un maestro di statura internazionale, rimasto sino a pochi anni fa pressoché sconosciuto fra i connazionali. Parliamo di Karel Reisz, insieme a Miloš Forman il regista ceco più significativo di tutti i tempi, un grande che ebbe il singolare destino di non aver mai lavorato nella sua patria di origine.

Karel, nato a Ostrava nel 1926, lasciò infatti la Cecoslovacchia nel 1939, quando il padre – un agiato avvocato di origini ebraiche – decise di metterlo in salvo con il fratello maggiore Pavel su un treno in partenza per la Gran Bretagna, sottraendoli alla minaccia nazista e strappandoli al destino della Shoah. quelli della leggendaria operazione Kindertransport, organizzati in prossimità della guerra dal filantropo britannico Nicholas George Winton.

Dopo aver compiuto gli studi in una scuola di Reading (50 km da Londra), e una breve parentesi nella Royal Air Force, una volta finita la guerra rientrò in patria per scoprire la sorte infausta dei suoi genitori e di tutti i familiari, sterminati ad Auschwitz.

Così la decisione di tornare nella sua nuova patria e di stabilirsi definitivamente in Inghilterra, dove si laureò in chimica all’Emmanuel College di Cambridge, per insegnare poi alla Grammar School di Marylebone, prima di diventare giornalista.

Il suo vero sogno era però il cinema.

Prima cominciò a scrivere acute recensioni per la rivista dell’Università di Oxford, Sequence, assieme a Lindsay Anderson e Galvin Miller. Successivamente per Sight and Sound, la rivista cinematografica più rinomata del Regno Unito. Con Anderson formò una collaborazione che durò anni, prima come giornalisti, poi come colleghi dietro alla cinepresa.

A master of international stature, who until a few years ago was almost unknown among his countrymen. We are talking about Karel Reisz, who along with Miloš Forman, is perhaps the most significant Czech film director of all time, a great man who had the curious destiny of never having worked in his country of origin.

Karel was born in Ostrava in 1926, leaving Czechoslovakia in 1939, when his father, a wealthy lawyer of Jewish descent, decided to send him to safety alongside his older brother Pavel, putting them on a departing train to Britain, away from the growing Nazi threat and the horror of the Shoah. The trains of salvation were those of the legendary Kindertransport operation, organized shortly before the outbreak of the war, by the British philanthropist Nicholas George Winton.

After completing his studies at a school in Reading (50 km from London), and a brief spell in the Royal Air Force, once

the war was over he returned to his homeland to find out the fate of his parents and family members, all of whom had been exterminated in Auschwitz.

Hence the decision to return to his new home, and to settle in England, where he graduated in chemistry at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and then teaching at the Grammar School in Marylebone, before becoming a journalist.

His real dream, however, was cinema.

He first began writing reviews for the magazine of Oxford University, Sequence, alongside Lindsay Anderson and Galvin Miller, and subsequently for Sight and Sound, the most renowned film magazine in the UK. With Anderson he would form a long-lasting creative collaboration, first as journalists, then as colleagues behind the camera.

Reisz became known with the book Technique of film editing, a fundamental text, used by future masters of

cinema such as Truffaut and Resnais, but his passion and desire to create, bore its first fruit when he began making short films, with the support of the Experimental Film Fund of the British Film Institute. As a result, he helped create, along with Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson, without forgetting the Italian writer and director Lorenza Mazzetti, Free Cinema, a movement not limited to film, but also a cultural and social one. The viewpoint was clearly left-wing, with the implicit theme of believing in freedom, in the importance of the individual, and in the meaning of everyday life.

His early works consisted of documentary films, like Momma Don’t Allow (directed by Reisz and Richardson), before getting to the key films of the movement, in particular a turning point in British cinema: Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1961).

Reisz si fece conoscere con il libro La tecnica del montaggio cinematografico, un testo fondamentale, utilizzato da futuri maestri come Truffaut e Resnais, ma la sua passione e la voglia di creare portarono i primi frutti concreti quando cominciò a girare cortometraggi, grazie al supporto dell’Experimental Film Fund del British Film Institute. Fu così che contribuì a creare – insieme a Lindsay Anderson e Tony Richardson, senza dimenticare la scrittrice e regista italiana Lorenza Mazzetti – il Free Cinema, un movimento non solo cinematografico, ma anche culturale e sociale. L’impronta era nettamente di sinistra, con l’atteggiamento implicito di credere nella libertà, nell’importanza dell’individuo e nel significato della quotidianità.

In principio con film documentari, come Momma Don’t Allow (di Reisz e Richardson), per poi arrivare al film chiave del movimento e a una svolta nel cinema inglese: Sabato sera, domenica mattina (1961).

Fino all’uscita del capolavoro del regista slesiano, il cinema britannico aveva praticamente trascurato la vita della classe operaia, rappresentata solo da personaggi minori e mai protagonisti.

Sabato sera, domenica mattina, invece, il primo lungometraggio di Reisz, sconvolse il pubblico dell’epoca con il linguaggio rozzo ed il modo esplicito, almeno per l’epoca, in cui veniva raffigurata l’avventura extraconiugale fra il protagonista Jimmy, un operaio, e la moglie di un suo amico. Un film sociologicamente e politicamente azzeccato, di uno straordinario successo,

sia di critica che di pubblico, che lanciò la carriera dell’attore principale Albert Finney. Curiosamente, ci volle uno straniero per rivitalizzare e cambiare le tendenze del cinema inglese, oltre a dar vita a una delle onde cinematografiche più significanti dell’epoca con la Nouvelle Vague francese e le nuove onde cecoslovacche e polacche.

Fu l’inizio della prima fase d’oro della sua carriera, e seguirono i film La doppia vita di Dan Craig (1964), sempre con Finney, Morgan matto da legare (1966) ed Isadora (1968).

In Morgan si vedeva la vera genialità del cineasta, con una trama che segue un uomo sfrenato che tenta di riconquistare la moglie per evitare il divorzio. Usa tutti i mezzi, fino a travestirsi da gorilla, creando caos ovunque.

L’attrice principale degli ultimi due film citati, Vanessa Redgrave, vinse il premio per la migliore interpretazione femminile a Cannes, ma l’insuccesso commerciale sprofondò l’autore in un lungo periodo di silenzio.

Jimmy, a factory worker, and the wife of his friend. A sharp, sociologically and politically accurate work, which enjoyed an extraordinary success among both critics and the public, also launched the career of leading actor Albert Finney. Curiously, it took a foreigner to revitalize and change the trends of British cinema, as well as creating one of the most significant films movements of the time, along with the French New Wave, and the Czechoslovak and Polish new waves.

It was the beginning of the first golden era of his career, and the films Night Must Fall (1964), again with Finney, Morgan! (1966), and Isadora (1968) followed.

It was particularly in Morgan!, where the true genius of the filmmaker was present, with a storyline that follows an eccentric, unrestrained man who tries to win back his wife to avoid divorce. He uses all means possible, even dressing up as a gorilla, creating chaos everywhere. The main star of the latter film (and also Isadora), Vanessa Redgrave,

When he resumed his activity in 1974 however, it was in the United States, where he hoped to embark on more ambitious projects. Reisz dimostrò nuovamente la sua bravura nella direzione degli attori ottenendo un’ottima interpretazione da Nick Nolte in uno dei tanti film del decennio legati alla guerra del Vietnam, caratterizzato da una tensione fatta di continuo pericolo e tante svolte.

Nonostante avesse già ottenuto stima e notorietà, il suo più grande successo internazionale fu La donna del tenente francese (1981), un melodramma tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di John Fowles e sceneggiato da Harold Pinter, interpretato dalla già celebre Meryl Streep e dal quasi esordiente Jeremy Irons.

Se le opere successive segnarono il suo declino, Reisz comunque aveva già contribuito a influire in modo determinante sulla storia del cinema, specialmente in Inghilterra, dove creò le fondamenta del futuro del cinema by tension consisting of the constant threat of danger and numerous twists.

If subsequent works marked his decline, Reisz however, had already helped to exert a decisive influence on the history of cinema, especially in England, where he laid the foundations of the future of the national cinema, and the conditions under which directors such as Ken Loach and Mike Leigh emerged later.

What is surprisingly, however, is the lack of attention paid to his filmography in his homeland, that is, at least until his death on November 25, 2002.

The master filmmaker has also been rediscovered thanks to the documen-

tary Karel Reisz, ten filmový život, directed by Petra Všelichová in 2012, and broadcast on Česká televize. An hour long, it retraces his life from his tragic childhood, and includes a series of illuminating interviews with co-workers, children and especially with his brother Pavel in Ostrava, where he returns to talk about their carefree childhood in the city known as the “Steel heart of the Republic”. There are plenty of anecdotes about his early days in England such as his reluctance to change eating habits, and refusal to Anglicize his name from Karel to Charles as his mother suggested him to do in the Prague station, the last time she saw him, before his farewell.

But the trump card of Reisz was precisely that; he was too Czech to be English and almost English to be Czech, and his origins gave him a unique insight into the places where he lived and worked, whether it was England or in the United States.

Those who had the good fortune to work with Reisz spoke of an English refinement, but also of a “meticulousness that was more typically Czecho-

Il maestro è stato riscoperto anche grazie al documentario Karel Reisz, ten filmový život,diretto da Petra Všelichová nel 2012, poi trasmesso su Česká televize. In un’ora ripercorre tutta la sua vita a partire della sua tragica infanzia, e comprende una serie di interviste illuminanti con collaboratori, figli e soprattutto con il fratello Pavel ad Ostrava, dove torna per parlare della loro infanzia spensierata nella città “Cuore d’acciaio della Repubblica”. Non mancano gli episodi sui suoi primi giorni in Inghilterra come la sua riluttanza a cambiare abitudini culinarie, ed il suo rifiuto di anglicizzare il suo nome da Karel a Charles come sua madre gli propose di fare nella Stazio-

ne di Praga, l’ultima volta che lo vide, prima dell’addio.

Ma l’asso nella manica di Reisz era proprio questo; era troppo ceco per essere inglese e quasi troppo inglese per essere ceco, e le sue origini gli davano una visione unica dei luoghi dove viveva e lavorava, che fosse l’Inghilterra o gli Stati Uniti.

Chi ha avuto la fortuna di lavorare con Reisz ha raccontato di una signorilità inglese, ma di una “meticolosità più tipicamente cecoslovacca”, come affermò Vanessa Redgrave in seguito alla sua morte. Col senno di poi si nota che il filo conduttore nelle sue opere è stata la tendenza ad usare protagonisti ribelli, incapaci di seguire i dettami della società, un tema presente anche in vari film cecoslovacchi della Nová Vlna all’epoca. Potremmo dunque vedere Reisz come una specie di ponte, o legame, fra il cinema dell’Ovest e il cinema dell’Est, al tempo della cortina di ferro.

A distanza di cinquant’anni, la recensione della retrospettiva Cubist Art from Czechoslovakia allestita alla Tate Gallery di Londra trovata sulle colonne di un numero di The Burlington Magazine datato ottobre ‘67 suggerisce una riflessione su quanto il Cubismo boemo sia realmente noto al grande pubblico in tutta la sua varietà di espressioni.

Il termine cubismo per lo più evoca immediatamente le atmosfere avanguardiste della fervente Montmartre agli albori degli anni Dieci dello scorso secolo. Il pubblico in redingote aveva ormai dimestichezza con l’assenza del chiaroscuro e la risoluzione dell’immagine in soli termini cromatici introdotta dall’Impressionismo, allorquando anche la prospettiva – l’altro pilastro della pittura consolidato dal Rinascimento italiano – si presentò sulle tele parigine profondamente revisionata.

Nell’ordine, Picasso, Braque, Apollinaire e Dérain sono prontamente ricordati per la svolta imposta alla pittura spingendo la prospettiva naturale con pennelli e parole alle sue Fifty years on, the retrospective review of Cubist Art from Czechoslovakia staged at the Tate Gallery in London found on the columns of an issue of The Burlington Magazine dated October ‘67, provides a reflection on how well known Bohemian Cubism is to the public in all its variety of expressions.

The term Cubism, for the most part, immediately evokes the avant-garde atmosphere of ardent Montmartre at the dawn of the second decade of the last century. The audience in frock coats had become familiar with the absence of chiaroscuro, and the resolution of the image in purely chromatic terms introduced by Impressionism, even when the perspective, the other pillar of painting consolidated by the Italian Renaissance, appeared on the deeply revamped Parisian paintings.

Tuttavia, se la retrospettiva prima parigina e poi londinese poneva in luce il contributo boemo alla pittura cubista – trasformandola terna in un quartetto, aggiungendovi Praga – assai meno conosciuta al grande pubblico è la portata che il movimento cubista ebbe in Boemia, specialmente in architettura.

Il crescente interesse dei giovani artisti boemi per le questioni formali e

la lezione di Cézanne spinse nel 1910 l’associazione praghese per le belle arti Mánes ad organizzare una mostra delle recenti opere esposte al Salon des Indépendants di Parigi. Allestita nel padiglione che Jan Kotěra progettò nel 1902 con intenti temporanei per l’esposizione delle opere di Rodin, la mostra ebbe un successo straordinario, tanto che un gruppo di artisti si prodigò per acquistare per la Città la tela Le Bagnanti di André Dérain grazie ad una colletta organizzata nei café. Raccoltisi attorno al critico Vincenc Kramář molti di questi artisti infiammati dalle sperimentazioni condotte dal Cubismo francese lo seguirono a Parigi. Kramář fu tra i primi

for the breakthrough imposed on painting, pushing the natural perspective with brushes and words to its extreme consequences, multiplying the points of view, and condensing fragments of reality, moments and events on the canvas into a fresh, new fusion.

In short, the term Cubism is generally associated without unhesitatingly with a trio of elements: “painting, Picasso, Paris”. However, if the retrospective first in Paris and then London, shed light on the Bohemian contribution to the Cubist painting, turning the trio into a quartet, by adding Prague, what

is far less known to the general public is the scope the Cubist movement had in Bohemia, especially in architecture.

In 1910, the growing interest of young Bohemian artists for the formal questions, and Cézanne’s lesson, pushed Prague’s Mánes Association of beautiful arts into organizing an exhibition of recent works exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Staged in the hall that Jan Kotěra designed in 1902, temporarily intended for the exhibition of works by Rodin, the exhibition was a tremendous success, even to the extent that a group of artists made efforts to

Sebbene il Cubismo giunse formalmente a Praga mediante la pittura, la schiera di artisti ed intellettuali boemi accolse il concetto di Cubismo configurandolo in una molteplicità, innescando così un fenomeno d’avanguardia tra i più culturalmente pervasivi. Infatti, oltre a dar vita ad una nuova vivida visione sintetica tra narrativa e simbolo conosciuta in pittura come cubo-espressionismo, la scena artistica ed intellettuale praghese fu capace di declinarne i principi pressoché in ogni campo artistico.

Non solo pittura e scultura, ma anche teatro e letteratura destrutturati – come quelli di Karel Čapek (primo ad impiegare il termine robot per indicare un androide) – e soprattutto architettura e design portano materialmente a compimento un vasto progetto formalista ed antifunzionalista. buy the painting The Bathers of André Dérain for the city, thanks to a collection of funds organized in the cafés. Gathering around the critic Vincenc Kramář, many of the artists roused by experiments conducted by French Cubism followed him to Paris. Kramář was among the first to study Cubism, collecting different works of Picasso and Braque, who thanks to him came to Prague, fueling an extremely receptive art scene.

Although Cubism formally came to Prague through painting, an array of Bohemian artists and intellectuals welcomed the concept of Cubism representing it in its various facets, thus triggering among the most culturally pervasive avant-garde phenomenons.

In fact, in addition to forging a vivid new synthetic vision between the narrative and symbolism known in painting as Cubo-Expressionism, the artistic and intellectual scene in Prague was

able to narrow down the principles in almost every artistic field.

Not only painting and sculpture, but also unstructured theatre and literature, such as Karel Čapek (first to employ the term robot for an android), and above all architecture and design materially bring an extensive formalist and antifunctionalist project to completion.

Opposing both the bourgeois naturalism and the secessionist and positivist materialism, the objective was to make tabula rasa of the tradition.

The extreme language used both in the words, and in the forms, is an expression of this desired caesura. Alongside shapes sometimes directed at the perception of an abstract substance, far from a functional purpose, in fact persuasive speeches appear, rich in proclamations and prophecies.

Faced with these circumstances, the full success of the transfer of their

theories to the design of buildings and objects of use not limited to rare prototypes, is a prerogative that profoundly characterizes this avant-garde form, although the number of diverse analogies bind it to other contemporary experiences, for example to Italian Futurism.

Inspired in the forms of the typical geometric and chromatic breakdown of the early French Cubism, despite the proclamations in stark contrast to the needs of the project disciplines, Cubism Bohemian found the arduous and delicate balance between conceptual and functional agendas with new scientific principles. However, those principles would have had no purpose without the passion of young Bohemian architects and designers, animated by the desire to also move away from Vienna, while pursuing the unity of architecture and arts typical of Jugendstil.

altre esperienze coeve, per esempio al Futurismo italiano.

Ispirato nelle forme dalla scomposizione geometrica e cromatica tipica del primo Cubismo francese, nonostante i proclami in netto contrasto con le necessità delle discipline del progetto, il Cubismo boemo trovò l’arduo e delicato equilibrio tra programma concettuale e funzionale grazie a nuovi principi scientifici.

Tuttavia, a nulla sarebbero serviti quei principi senza la passione dei giovani architetti e designer boemi animati dal desiderio di allontanarsi anche stilisticamente da Vienna, pur perseguendo l’unità tra architettura ed arti applicate tipicamente Jugendstil.

L’ideale di legare l’arte con la vita ereditato dalla Secessione Viennese unito al desiderio di forme che esprimessero un messaggio d’autonomia ed indipendenza nelle quali riconoscersi fece di Praga una città cubista.

L’unica città sulle cui strade si possono ammirare oltre un centinaio di esemplari di Cubismo architettonico e persino alcuni raffinati arredi urbani, perfetti esempi di Cubismo boemo.

The ideal of linking art with the life inherited from the Viennese Secession coupled with the desire of forms that express a message of autonomy and independence to identify oneself with, turned Prague into a cubist city.

The only city with streets on which you can admire over a hundred examples of architectural Cubism, and even some refined, urban décor, perfect examples of Bohemian Cubism.

The most famous is certainly the diamond-like lamppost with a seat designed by Emil Králíček and Matěj Blecha located between the entrance of fourteenth century church of Our Lady of the Snows (kostel Panny Marie Sněžné), and the back of Adamova lékárna, a Secessionist building that slips into cubist forms. Also significant is the extremely fitting juxtaposition, operated by Antonín Preifer, of the pointed Cubist frame and sinuous Ba-

Il più celebre è certamente l’adamantino lampione con seduta progettato da Emil Králíček e Matěj Blecha collocato tra l’ingresso della trecentesca chiesa della Vergine della neve (kostel Panny Marie Sněžné) e il retro della Adamova lékárna – edificio secessionista che scivola verso soluzioni cubiste. Estremamente significativa anche la felice giustapposizione operata da Antonín Preifer tra la puntuta cornice cubista e la sinuosa scultura barocca di San Giovanni Nepomuceno situata accanto alla casa Diamant, esempio notevole del quale il solo nome è sufficiente ad evocare le sfaccettate e spigolose forme cubiste che la decorano.

Sebbene camminando con sguardo attento tra le vie di Praga balzino agli occhi in posizioni del tutto inattese molte altre delizie cubiste prettamente decorative – come la ringhiera che cinge la fontana all’angolo tra la chiesa di San Nicola (kostel svatého Mikuláše) e Pařížská, vi sono anche compiute espressioni formali.

L’edificio residenziale tra Neklanova e Přemyslova che Josef Chochol realizza nel 1913 con una inusitata soluzione d’angolo ne è un valido esempio, sovente l’unico menzionato dai libri di storia dell’architettura. I molteplici piani cristallini ed il tentativo di «rendere cubico lo spazio» sono morfologicamente debitori al tardogotico boemo, basti pensare al sistema di volte della Vladislavský sál all’interno del Castello per scorgere più d’una analogia.

Per una pausa a tema, durante le passeggiate in cerca di facciate cubiste, non può certo mancare una sosta alla centralissima “casa della Madonna roque sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk sitting next to the Diamant house, a remarkable example of which the name alone is enough to evoke the faceted, angular cubist forms that decorate it .

While walking with watchful eyes in the streets of Prague many other purely decorative Cubist delights suddenly catch the eye,in totally unexpected locations, like the railing that surrounds the fountain on the corner of church of Saint Nicholas (kostel svatého Mikuláše) and Pařížská street, and there are also completed formal expressions. The residential building between Neklanova and Přemyslova that Josef Chochol had built in 1913, with an unusual corner solution is one good example, often the only one mentioned by the history books. The multiple crystal planes and the attempt to “make the space cubic”, are morphologically indebted to the late Bohemian Gothic.

It is enough to think of the vault system of the Vladislavský sál inside the Castle to catch sight of more of an analogy.

dell’oggetto dovevano prevalere sulle tecniche e sul pregio dei materiali al fine di presentare al mercato il concetto di progetto artistico per oggetti d’uso quotidiano, spianando la strada allo sviluppo del design così come lo conosciamo oggi. La sperimentazione sui piccoli oggetti della quotidianità completava nell’ideale cubista l’espe-

rienza dell’architettura, rendendola totale. Laddove l’architettura permette di confrontarsi con l’espressione plastica di grandi masse, insiemi e concentrazioni di forze, gli oggetti minuti offrono «semplici situazioni di drammaticità», permettendo di declinare ed esercitare l’ideale cubista sulla materia ad ogni scala umana.

Where the architecture allows comparison with the plastic expression of the broad masses, groups and concentrations of forces, minute objects offer “simple situations of drama”, allowing it to impose and exercise the Cubist ideal on the subject on every human scale.

For a theme break, during walks in search of cubist facades, you cannot miss a stop at the central House of the Black Madonna (Dům U Černé Matky Boží), a Renaissance building reconstructed into cubist forms by Josef Gočár in 1913, housing the Grand Café Orient inside, a cubist coffee still in business, complete with original furniture and ornaments.

An operational arm of minute scale in this provocative battle against provincial and conformist taste, the Artěl cooperative produced a great variety of objects, from small items of furniture to toys, from home textiles to jewelery and souvenirs, working fabrics, wood, ceramics, metals and, of course, albeit to a much lesser extent, also the

La moderna città di Praga venne fondata ufficialmente nel 1922 con il nome di “Velká Praha”, dopo più di settanta tentativi; molte volte fu necessario confrontarsi con la resistenza di autonomie locali che non volevano rinunciare alla propria indipendenza. Si componeva di otto quartieri praghesi e trentasette altri comuni. Il numero degli abitanti triplicò così fino a 676 mila e la città divenne otto volte più grande (copriva un’area di quasi 172 km²): Praga divenne una metropoli di calibro europeo.

Nel 1784 era già nata la “città reale di Praga”, che aveva riunito quattro città indipendenti. Nel XIX secolo vennero aggiunti Josefov, Vyšehrad, Holešovice e Bubny, all’inizio del XX secolo Libeň. Il grande cambiamento arrivò con la legge del 1920, con cui i villaggi e gli insediamenti vicini vennero uniti a Praga e sulla base di essa nacque appunto la Velká Praha. Contemporaneamente venne introdotto il titolo di “Primator” di origine latina, al posto del ceco “Starosta”, per indicare la figura equivalente a quella di sindaco.

The modern city of Prague was officially founded in 1922 under the name of “Velká Praha”, after more than seventy attempts. Many times it was necessary to deal with the resistance of local self-government who refused to give up their independence.

It consisted of eight Prague districts, and thirtyseven other municipalities. The number of inhabitants tripled up to 676,000 and the city was eight times larger (covering an area of nearly 172 km²): Prague became a metropolis of European calibre. In 1784, the “royal city of Prague”, was already born, which had united four independent cities. In the nineteenth century Josefov, Vyšehrad, Holešovice and Bubny were added, and in the early twentieth century Libeň. The big change came with the 1920 law, with which the villages and neighboring settlements were connected to Prague, and on the basis of it Velká Praha was born. At the same time the title of “Primator” of Latin origin, was introduced, instead of the Czech “Starosta”, to indicate the figure equivalent to that of mayor.

Miloš Forman, gigante cinematografico ceco di fama mondiale, con all’attivo due Oscar e tre Golden Globes, festeggia quest’anno, il 18 febbraio, i suoi 85 anni. Forman, che ha il merito di aver “esportato” il cinema ceco all’estero e, in particolare, negli Usa, dove si è trasferito nel 1968, ha diretto pellicole indimenticabili come Al fuoco, pompieri!, Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo e Amadeus. Quest’anno il regista non si recherà in Repubblica Ceca, per la sua notoria avversione agli aerei e anche per via della sua salute precaria.

Tuttavia, le iniziative a lui dedicate in Repubblica Ceca non sembrano sulla via dell’estinzione: pubblicazioni, premi, interviste. Forman è inoltre apparso in una delle pubblicità del Festival cinematografico internazionale di Karlovy Vary, dove si ironizza sulla sua età: appare nella sua casa in Connecticut insieme alla moglie Martina, che gli porta delle pillole medicinali; Forman le sbriciola con il Crystal Globe (il maggiore premio di Karlovy Vary) per poi inghiottirle.

Miloš Forman, the world-famous Czech film giant, with two Oscars and three Golden Globes under his belt, this year, on February 18, will be celebrating his 85th birthday. Forman, who has the merit of having “exported” Czech cinema abroad, in particular, in the US, where he moved in 1968, has directed unforgettable films such as The Firemen’s Ball!, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Amadeus. This year the director will not be travelling to the Czech Republic, due to his notorious aversion to airplanes and also because of his poor health.

However, the initiatives in the Czech Republic dedicated to him do not seem to be vanishing, thanks to numerous publications, awards, interviews. Forman also appeared in one of the advertisements for the International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary, where he joked about his age: appearing at his home in Connecticut with his wife Martina, who brought him medicinal pills; Forman crushes them with the Crystal Globe (the top prize of Karlovy Vary), and then swallows them.

La star internazionale dell’hockey Jaromír Jágr, dalla natia Kladno, si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti nel 1990 giocando nella National Hockey League per i Pittsburgh Penguins e diventando una vera leggenda dell’hockey mondiale, guadagnandosi l’oro alle Olimpiadi di Nagano e diventando il migliore giocatore di origine non canadese di tutti i tempi a giocare nella Nhl. All’età di quarantacinque anni, Jarda è anche il giocatore più vecchio, tanto che sono in molti a domandarsi perché continui. L’imbattibile Wayne Gretzky si è detto felice che Jarda giochi ancora e gli ha augurato di poter superare i suoi 894 goal. Jágr ha segnato 760 reti, ma è intenzionato a giocare fino ai cinquantacinque anni: che ciò possa realmente accadere? Una curiosità: negli Usa Jágr si è chiaramente ben integrato (gli hanno dedicato persino la marca di un burro d’arachidi), ma non ha mai rinunciato alla cucina ceca, tanto che “Mama Jágr”, che ha vissuto a lungo con lui negli Usa, ha continuato per molto a sfornare manicaretti boemi.

The international hockey star Jaromír Jágr, from Kladno, moved to the United States in 1990, playing in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and becoming a true legend of the hockey world, earning the gold medal at the Olympics in Nagano, and becoming the best non-Canadian-born player of all time to play in the NHL. At the age of forty-five, Jarda is also the oldest player, so much so that many are wondering why he continues. The unbeatable Wayne Gretzky said he was happy that Jarda still plays, and wished him to be able to better his record of 894 goals. Jágr has scored 760 goals, but is willing to play up to the age of fifty-five: but could this actually happen?

A curiosity: in the US, Jágr has clearly integrated well (they have even dedicated the brand of peanut butter to him), but he has never abandoned Czech cuisine, even to the point that “Mama Jágr”, who lived a long time with him in US, continued to bake Bohemian delicacies for him.

Vent’anni fa moriva tragicamente il grande scrittore ceco Bohumil Hrabal, all’età di ottantatré anni, mentre si trovava presso l’ospedale praghese Na Bulovce. La spiegazione ufficiale dei medici è che sia caduto dal quinto piano cercando di dare da mangiare ai piccioni (sappiamo quanto Hrabal amasse gli animali e quanto negli ultimi anni li considerasse, soprattutto i gatti, la sua unica compagnia). Tuttavia, le persone a lui più vicine sono certe che si sia trattato di un suicidio – non avvenuto per disperazione, ma per una scelta razionale. A sostegno di questa ipotesi sono stati effettuati alcuni test che hanno dimostrato che Hrabal non si trovava sotto l’effetto di alcool o narcotici e c’è chi sostiene che con un libro si fosse costruito un gradino che gli permettesse di raggiungere il parapetto e gettarsi. Il suicidio, del resto, è un tema ricorrente nelle sue opere – si pensi agli indimenticabili protagonisti di Treni strettamente sorvegliati e di Una solitudine troppo rumorosa.

Twenty years ago, the great Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal died tragically at the age of eighty-three, when he was at the Prague hospital of Na Bulovce. The official explanation from doctors was that he fell from the fifth floor while trying to feed pigeons (we know how Hrabal loved animals and how much in his later years he considered them, especially cats as his only company). However, the people closest to him are certain that it was a suicide, not caused by despair however, but due to a rational choice. In support of this hypothesis tests were made which demonstrated that Hrabal was not under the influence of alcohol or any drugs, and some state that with the use of a book he had created a step that would allow him to reach the railing and jump. Suicide, after all, is a recurring theme in his works, with the unforgettable protagonists of Closely Watched Trains and Too Loud a Solitude coming to mind.

The authors have, in fact, left out the typical touristic places and sights and have, instead, selected 111 unusual stops that include the hidden corners of the city as well as other places that are pulsating with life –from the Smíchov funicular to the exhibition organized inside the former Nazi torture chambers, from the cubist street lamp in Jungmannovo Náměstí to the first bar in the world where you may pay with bitcoins... but not only: readers are also told curious stories such as that of the Sputnik flight over Stromovka park and are given advice on unusual activities, as for example, the Pragulic guided tours to the discovery of the Prague of the homeless, correlated with incisive and humorous descriptions and accompanied by photographs.

Il protagonista è Vilém Lebeda, ispettore capo di un ordinario quartiere della Praga postcomunista che, indagando su alcuni casi sospetti, si imbatte in un burbero e misantropo pensionato, Viktor Dyk, di cui scoprirà l’implicazione in un omicidio archiviato tanti anni prima come caso irrisolto... Sono presenti tutti gli ingredienti per un thriller esplosivo (incendi, omicidi, stupri e così via), ma Ouředník sovverte il genere e confeziona un’acuta e sofisticata parabola sulle ambiguità della lingua, in cui indaga la natura umana con un eccezionale arsenale di generi differenti, giochi di parole e satira.

The Italian translation of the short novel Ad Acta, by Patrik Ouředník, is finally available. The book was published in its original language in 2006. It is an atypical thriller, that is at times metaphysical and that does not limit itself to respecting the canonical rules of its category, but blends diverse genres, such as social satire, meditations on the limits of the novel, ambiguities of communication, and is above all a reflection on the language which is central in the novel. The protagonist is Vilém Lebeda, the chief inspector of an ordinary post-Communist Prague neighbourhood who, while investigating a number of suspicious cases, runs into a surly and misanthropic pensioner, Viktor Dyk, whom he discovers, was involved in a murder that had been filed many years before as an unsolved case... It contains all the ingredients for an explosive thriller (fires, murders, rapes and so on), but Ouředník subverts the genre and creates an acute and sophisticated parable on the ambiguities of the language, in which he investigates human nature by means of a vast arsenal of genres, such as puns and satire.

Originariamente pubblicato nel 1953 e fresco di ristampa italiana, questo romanzo al contempo storico e fantastico descrive in modo esteso la serie di eventi che portò alla sconfitta della Boemia contro l’Austria nella battaglia della Montagna Bianca del 1620. Lo scrittore ceco naturalizzato austriaco Leo Perutz ricostruisce il rapporto segreto e spesso tragico tra Rodolfo II, Re di Boemia e Imperatore del Sacro Romano impero, mecenate delle arti e delle scienze, ma anche uomo eccentrico e misterioso, e l’ebreo Mordechai Meisl. Questi gli presta denaro per le sue stravaganze, ma i destini dei due si legano presto in un inestricabile intreccio: Rodolfo, debole e scialacquatore, diviene completamente dipendente dal talento di Meisl nel fare soldi, ma quest’ultimo può prosperare solo sotto la protezione di Rodolfo. Perutz ricostruisce con maestria i difficili rapporti tra la comunità ebraica e quella cattolica di Praga, abbandonando la prudenza che aveva mostrato nelle opere precedenti e dando libero sfogo alla sua fantasia.

Originally published in 1953, and just re-published in Italian, thenovel–which isboth historical and imaginative–extensively describes the series of events that led to Bohemia’s defeat against Austria during the White Mountain battle of 1620. The Czech writer Leo Perutz, who also became an Austrian citizen, reconstructs the secret and often tragic relationship between Rudolf II, King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, patron of the arts and sciences, but also an eccentric and mysterious man and the Jew Mordechai Meisl. The latter lends him money for his extravagances, but the destinies of the two men soon become inextricable tangled: Rudolf, who is weak and spendthrift, becomes totally dependent on Meisl’s talent for making money.

However, the latter is only able to prosper under the protection of Rudolf. Perutz skilfully reconstructs the difficult relationship between the Jewish community and the Catholic Church in Prague, abandoning the amount of caution he had shown in his previous works and giving free rein to his imagination.

Questa monografia analizza circa trecento film cechi prodotti dopo la caduta del regime comunista, fornendo una panoramica del sistema di valori costruito dal cinema del suddetto periodo. Il giornalista e accademico ceco Jan Čulík, oggi professore all’Università di Glasgow, descrive il difficile confronto dei registi cechi con l’eredità del comunismo e con altre esperienze traumatiche del passato, non omettendo tuttavia la loro testimonianza sugli sviluppi politici e sociali più recenti della Repubblica Ceca. Čulík sottolinea come molti film cechi accentuino la posizione subordinata della donna e trasmettano l’immagine di un uomo aggressivo ed inefficiente. Secondo il giornalista, infatti, il cinema ceco successivo al 1989 ha costruito l’immagine di una società ancora fortemente influenzata dalla cosiddetta “normalizzazione”, il periodo che seguì all’invasione sovietica del 1968, di cui presenta ancora molti clichés.

This monograph analyses about three hundred Czech films, produced after the fall of the communist regime and provide an overview of the system of values created by the cinema of that period. The Czech journalist and academic Jan Čulík, who is now a professor at the University of Glasgow, describes the difficult relationship of Czech film directors with the legacy of communism and other traumatic experiences of the past by including their testimony of the latest political and social developments in the Czech Republic. Čulík underlines the fact that many Czech films tend to accentuate the subordinate position of women and convey an image of a man as being aggressive and inefficient. In fact, according to the reporter, Czech cinema after 1989has built the image of a society that is still strongly influenced by the so-called “normalization”, the period that followed the Soviet invasion of 1968 that still displays many clichés.

Antonín Kalina’s noble-achievement is the story of an ordinary hero, a Czechoslovak communist named Righteous among the nations in the state of Israel. His is the life of a great man of the twentieth century, who is still not so well known, and a man of courage

and altruism, who defended the weak during Europe’s darkest: the Nazi genocide. The son of a shoemaker from the town of Třebíč, Vysočina, where he was born in 1902, Kalina grew up in a poor family: eleven children among brothers and sisters. His father taught him the

trade, but Antonín decided to follow another path: he joined the communist Party and became a public official.

It was, in fact, the Party membership that cost him his deportation as a political prisoner in 1939, following the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia.

Quella di Antonín Kalina è la storia di un eroe ordinario, di un comunista cecoslovacco nominato Giusto tra le nazioni nello Stato di Israele. La sua vita è quella di un grande del XX secolo, anche se ancora poco conosciuto.

Un uomo capace di coraggio e altruismo, pronto a resistere per difendere i deboli negli anni più bui dell’Europa, quelli del genocidio nazista. Figlio di un calzolaio di Třebíč, cittadina della Vysočina dove nasce nel 1902, Kalina cresce in una famiglia povera e numerosa: sono undici, tra fratelli e sorelle. Il padre gli insegna il mestiere, ma Antonín decide di seguire un’altra strada: si iscrive al Partito

comunista e diventa funzionario.

Sarà proprio questa appartenenza al Partito a costargli la deportazione come prigioniero politico nel 1939, a seguito dell’occupazione nazista della Cecoslovacchia.

Kalina è inviato prima a Dachau poi, in un secondo momento, nel campo di concentramento di Buchenwald. Se prima e dopo la guerra questo funzionario comunista ha sempre vissuto una vita ritirata, semplice, di cui restano sparute tracce, è durante il confitto che Kalina si guadagna il titolo di Giusto. Come Oskar Schindler, Giorgio Perlasca o Nicholas Winton, anche Kalina – pur in modo diverso – è capace di salvare tante vite

destinate allo sterminio in un’epoca di orrori. Lo farà per “i suoi ragazzi”, i giovani ebrei internati nel Blocco 66 del campo di Buchenwald.

Ma andiamo con ordine. Durante la sua presenza a Buchenwald, Kalina entra a far parte della resistenza sot-

terranea che opera nel campo, fatta di comunisti, ma non solo. Uomini che cercano, come possono, di ostacolare il funzionamento spietato della macchina della morte nazista. Spesso questi prigionieri sono incaricati dalle SS di dirigere certe operazioni

Kalina was first sent to Dachau and later to the Buchenwald concentration camp. If before and after the war, this communist official had lived a simple and retired life – there are very few traces left – it was during the conflict that Kalina earned

the title of Righteous. Just as Oskar Schindler, Giorgio Perlasca or Nicholas Winton, even Kalina, although differently, was able to save many lives that were destined to be exterminated during that horrible period of history. He did it for “his boys”, the

young Jewish prisoners in Block 66 of the Buchenwald camp.

But first things first. During his presence at Buchenwald, Kalina joined the underground resistance that operated on the ground and that was made up of communists, but not only. The men

tried, as much as they could, to hinder the ruthless workings of the Nazi death machine. The SS often instructed prisoners to conduct certain daily operations in the camp. Between 1944 and 1945, Buchenwald had become extremely overcrowded, if we can allow

quotidiane del campo. Tra il 1944 e il 1945, Buchenwald raggiunge un affollamento, se possibile, ancora più disumano che negli anni precedenti.

Nel campo i prigionieri superano i 100 mila. I ragazzi arrivano talmente numerosi che i comandanti decidono di costituire un nuovo blocco a loro dedicato: il Blocco 66. L’area dove sorge il distaccamento dei giovani è talmente

disastrata e infestata di malattie che le guardie SS vi passano di rado. La gestione del blocco è affidata proprio a Kalina e al suo assistente Gustav Schiller, un ebreo polacco.

I due fanno di tutto per proteggere questi ragazzi, che hanno tra i 12 e i 16 anni. Giovani uomini che arrivano da tutta Europa ed hanno già vissuto traumi inimmaginabili: ghettizzazione,

brutalità, privazioni, fame, e spesso la perdita delle proprie famiglie. Quando arrivano a Buchenwald sono già “abituati” a vivere in condizioni estreme.

Kalina fa in modo che la loro situazione migliori sensibilmente rispetto a quello che potevano avere conosciuto prima di arrivare. Il funzionario comunista cecoslovacco riesce a organizzare delle lezioni per questi giovani: matematica,

The prisoners in the camp exceeded 100 thousand and the number of boys arriving at the camp were so numerous that the commanders decided to form a new block for them: Block 66. This detached area, made up of young boys, was so devastated and infested with diseases that the SS guards very rarely inspected it. The block was run by Kalina and his assistant Gustav Schiller, a Polish Jew.

The two of them went through great lengths to protect the boys, who were between the age of 12 and 16. These young men arrived from all over Europe and had already been subject to unimaginable traumas: ghettoization, brutality, deprivation, hunger, and often, the loss of their families. When they got to Buchenwald they were somewhat already “accustomed” to living in extreme conditions. Kalina did his best to make sure their conditions were improved significantly compared

to what they had experienced previously. The Czechoslovak communist official was able to organize some lessons for them: mathematics, history, Yiddish. Kalina also tried tobring other boys to “his” block 66 and often tried to reunite brothers, or simply to alleviate their suffering. Some of them were Czech, and with them he was able to establish a special relationship. As the war was coming to an end and the camp situation getting even more serious – the Nazis trying to put into effect

storia, yiddish. In più, Kalina riesce a far trasferire altri ragazzi al “suo” Blocco 66, spesso per riunirli con fratelli che si trovavano lì, o semplicemente per alleviare le loro sofferenze. Alcuni di questi sono cecoslovacchi, e con loro può stabilire un rapporto speciale. Con l’avvicinarsi della fine della guerra, e la situazione fattasi sempre più drammatica nei campi, dove i nazisti mettono in atto la soluzione finale, gli sforzi di Kalina per proteggere i ragazzi del blocco si fanno sempre più rischiosi, ma necessari.

La seconda guerra mondiale è ormai agli sgoccioli: quando le forze sovietiche si avvicinano ai campi di concentramento situati nell’odierna Polonia, i nazisti decidono che è tempo di eliminare tutti gli ebrei di Buchenwald.

I comandanti del campo ordinano di rassembrarli tutti e condurli nelle cosiddette marce della morte, trasferimenti di prigionieri verso altri campi che sono delle vere e proprie condanne per uomini stremati da anni di prigionia. Mettendo a rischio la sua vita Antonín Kalina sceglie di non sottomet-

tersi all’ordine. Decide di non inviare i giovani prigionieri del Blocco 66 al raduno imposto e sostituisce la religione d’appartenenza sul loro documento d’identificazione: tutti i ragazzi ebrei sono iscritti come cristiani.

Quando le SS vengono alla ricerca di ebrei nel Blocco 66, Kalina li convince che non ne sono più rimasti. È grazie al suo coraggio in questo momento decisivo e drammatico che quando Buchenwald viene liberato l’11 aprile 1945, più di 900 ragazzi ebrei sono sopravvissuti. Si racconta che quando

furono liberati tutti i ragazzi di Kalina lo portarono in trionfo.

Finita la guerra il funzionario diventato eroe sparisce dietro la Cortina di ferro e non sarà mai veramente ricordato per i suoi atti. Oggi riposta nel cimitero di Olšany a Praga, in una tomba semplice, come la sua vita, insieme alla moglie e alla figlia di lei.

Del resto, se non fosse stato per l’impegno di un gruppo di sopravvissuti e studiosi, la memoria di quello che Kalina ha potuto fare a Buchenwald si sarebbe persa. Lui, non ha mai

their final project of death – Kalina’s efforts to protect the kids in the block became riskier, but necessary.

As the Second World War was coming to an end and the Soviet forces were approaching the concentration camps – in today’s Poland – the Nazis decided that it was time to eliminate all the Buchenwald Jews. The camp commanders gave orders to line them up and take them to the so-called deathmarches, by transferring the prisoners to other camps, which was a real

death sentence for most these young men, who were already exhausted and weakened by years of captivity. However, by putting his life at risk, Antonín Kalina decided not to follow these orders. He decided not to send these young prisoners from Block 66 to the imposed meeting point and changed the religious affiliation on their identification cards: all the Jewish boys were now registered as Christians.

When the SS finally arrived, looking for the Jews from Block 66, Kalina was

able to convince them that there were no more of them in the camp. It is, thus, thanks to his courage during this decisive and dramatic moment that, when Buchenwald became liberated on April 11, 1945, more than 900 Jewish children had been saved. It is reported that when they were liberated, all the Kalina’s boys received him in triumph.

At the end of the war, this public official, who had by now become a great hero, disappeared behind the Iron Curtain, and was never truly remembered

for his gesture. Today, his body lies in the cemetery of Olšany in Prague, in a simple grave, just as his life, beside his wife and daughter. After all, if it had not been for the commitment of a group of survivors and scholars, the memory of Kalina’s noble gesture at Buchenwald would have been lost forever. He never wanted to recount his story. He never did anything to be remembered. But today, around the world, there are hundreds, or thousands of people who owe their exist-

Proprio in uno di questi edifici, nella galleria Ladislav Novák, il 17 febbraio una sala è stata inaugurata alla memoria di Antonín Kalina. La data non è casuale, essendo il 115esimo anniversario della sua nascita. La sua città, dopo decenni d’oblio, vuole ricordare e far conoscere questo suo eroe: un’installazione nella sala racconta la storia di Kalina ai visitatori.

Lui se ne è andato nel 1990, senza medaglie, né eredi. I riconoscimenti sono arrivati postumi. Prima il titolo di Giusto delle nazioni del 2012 assegnato in Israele, poi nel 2014 un primo, importante, riconoscimento dal suo Paese.

His city, after decades of oblivion, wants to remember and make its hero known to the public: an installation in the hall recounts the story of Kalina to the public.

He departed this life in 1990, with no medals, or heirs and the awards arrived posthumously. First with the 2012 Righteous among the nations award in Israel and then in 2014, the first important recognition by his country. President Miloš Zeman awarded him the Medal of Merit, as a form of recognition on behalf of the Czech Republic for the stature of this great man, of a righteous communist.
