Cari lettori,

in avvio di questo numero vi parliamo dei programmi miliardari di spesa del settore difesa in Repubblica Ceca. Lo facciamo anche riportandovi le parole del ministro competente, Martin Stropnický, il quale in questa occasione ci ha concesso una breve intervista. Un piano di riarmo giustificato da varie ragioni, fra cui il deterioramento della sicurezza internazionale, così come la necessità di rinnovare dotazioni risalenti al periodo sovietico. Giocano poi le sollecitazioni dell’industria della difesa, fra cui ovviamente quelle dei produttori cechi, che hanno l’ambizione di tornare ai fasti del secolo scorso.

Voltando pagina, ci è sembrato interessante proporvi un articolo dedicato alla informazione digitale in Repubblica Ceca. Il cosiddetto Giornalismo 2.0 è in rapida ascesa anche da queste parti, come messo in luce da un recente studio della Scuola di Scienze Sociali dell‘Università Carlo di Praga che ha contribuito alla realizzazione del Digital News Report 2016, il consueto rapporto sull’industria dell‘informazione digitale nel mondo.

at the start of this issue we speak of the multi-million spending projects of the defense sector in the Czech Republic.

We do so also providing you with the words of the minister in charge, Martin Stropnický, who on this occasion gave us a short interview. A rearmament plan has been justified for various reasons, including the deterioration of international security, as well as the need to renew equipment dating back to the Soviet period. In addition, also the demands of the defense industry play a strong role, obviously including those of the Czech producers, who have the ambition to go back to the splendour of the last century.

A proposito di nuove tendenze, siamo andati a dare uno sguardo a come cambiano le abitudini alimentari dei cechi, con svíčková, guláš e vepřové koleno che perdono terreno sulle tavole di questo paese, a favore di una crescente diffusione della cucina verde. I cechi non diventano di colpo tutti vegetariani o vegani, ma è innegabile l’avanzata a passi da gigante del popolo “veg”.

Ad arricchire questo numero una serie di altri argomenti, fra cui l’articolo per il 100° anniversario della morte di Francesco Giuseppe, nel quale ricordiamo i rapporti, particolari e spesso

non facili dell’Imperatore austro-ungarico col suo Regno di Boemia. Bello anche il contributo dedicato a Jože Plečnik, l’architetto sloveno al quale Tomáš G. Masaryk nel 1920, all’indomani della indipendenza nazionale, affidò la rinascita architettonica del Castello di Praga.

Chiudiamo con le pagine sulla Collezione Ferrarini-Nicoli, una preziosa raccolta di opere del Realismo Socialista, presto in mostra al Castello di Bardi, in provincia di Parma, e della quale la società Progetto RC ha appena pubblicato un catalogo.

The so-called Journalism 2.0 is also growing rapidly in these parts, as highlighted by a recent study by the School of Social Sciences, of Charles University, Prague that contributed to the creation of the Digital News report 2016, the usual report on the industry of digital information in the world.

Speaking of new trends, we also took a look at how the eating habits of the Czechs are changing, with svíčková, guláš and vepřové koleno losing ground on the tables of this country, in favour of an increasing spread of green food. The Czechs have not all suddenly become vegetarian or vegan, but the giant steps made by the “veggie“ people are undeniable.

A number of other topics enrich the issue, including an article on the 100th anniversary of Franz Joseph‘s death, in which we remember the relationships, particular and often not so easy of the Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with his Kingdom of Bohemia. Also the pages dedicated to Jože Plečnik, the Slovenian architect who Tomáš G. Masaryk in 1920, after the national independence, entrusted with the architectural renaissance of the Prague Castle.

We conclude with pages on the Ferrarini-Nicoli Collection, a valuable gathering of works of Socialist Realism, soon to be on display at the Castle of Bardi, in the province of Parma, and on which our company Progetto RC has just published a catalogue.

Da una parte le richieste della Nato ai suoi alleati per eserciti efficienti e moderni, dall’altra l’aumento delle minacce terroristiche internazionali, dall’altra ancora la pressione dei produttori di armi e mezzi di difesa per

un aumento della spesa, e infine, la necessità di un ammodernamento delle dotazioni dell’esercito ceco, quasi ferme alla produzione sovietica.

On one hand, there are the demands of NATO to its allies for efficient and modern armies, and on the other the increase in international terrorist threats, in addition to the pressure from manufacturers of weapons and means of defence to

“In Repubblica Ceca, siamo ben consapevoli del fatto che la situazione della sicurezza globale si sia nettamente deteriorata negli ultimi anni e che la sicurezza del paese è indivisibile da quella dell’area Euro-Atlantica – ha spiegato il ministro in una intervista rilasciata a Progetto Repubblica Ceca. – Questi sviluppi non hanno trovato un riscontro nella spesa per il settore della Difesa ceco: la percentuale di Pil investita in questo settore è calata in maniera costante dal 2009 al 2014. L’esecutivo di cui faccio parte

“In the Czech Republic, we are well aware of the fact that the global security situation has sharply deteriorated in recent years, and that the country’s security is inseparable from that of the Euro-Atlantic zone”, explained the Minister in an interview given to Progetto Repubblica Ceca. “These developments have not resulted in any corresponding reaction from the sector of the Czech Defense: the percentage of GDP invested in this sector declined steadily from 2009 to 2014. The government of which I am a member as a minister, is the first that has started a gradual increase in spending for the Defence to reach 1.4% of GDP in 2020”, stressed Svtropnický. “Since 2015, we have recorded a recommencement of growth in funds allocated, with a significant increase of 10% this year alone. The percentage should be maintained in the years to come”.

The goal of the ambitious program is primarily to erase the traces and the reliance on outdated weapons dating even back to the Soviet production. To achieve the goal, “besides increased spending, we will have to significantly raise levels of staff, both in the Czech Armed Forces and among the active reservists. The goal is to increase the staff from the 22,000 who are active today to 27,000 and the reservists from 1,500 to 5,000”. In addition, according to the minister they are more than realistic numbers because the interest in enrollment among young people is very high: “We have reached 100% of the recruitment targets and for example, we recorded 2,000 new recruits” in 2016, the maximum threshold for this year.

“Our main objective in the near future is to recruit and stabilize the military personnel, and ensure that key modernization projects in support of the

bilizzare il personale militare e assicurarci che i progetti chiave di modernizzazione in supporto delle Forze di terra e di quelle dell’Aeronautica siano completati, e realizzare gli investimenti necessari nelle infrastrutture di difesa. Negli ultimi anni si è accumulato un debito di investimenti rimandati enorme, che cerchiamo di gestire progressivamente”, ha spiegato il ministro. E se l’area dell’aumento del personale militare e degli effettivi è fondamentale, la partita più grossa

è quella della spesa per armamenti.

Secondo il programma del ministero la spesa per questo settore è stata di 43,8 miliardi di corone nel 2015 (1,6 miliardi di euro), sarà di 47,8 nel 2016 (1,76 miliardi di euro), 52,5 miliardi di corone nel 2017 (1,9 miliardi di euro), fino a raggiungere 63 miliardi nel 2019 (2,3 miliardi di euro). Cifre di assoluto rispetto per un Paese che – dopo la flessione delle sue industrie militari seguita alla caduta del Muro di Berlino – nel 2015 ha registrato

una crescita dell’export di armi e di materiale di uso militare pari a 15,13 miliardi di corone (566 milioni di euro), rispetto agli 11,77 miliardi del 2014 (435 milioni di euro).

E proprio a queste, le rampanti aziende ceche, il ministero guarda con particolare interesse. “La cooperazione e le relazioni con l’industria locale della difesa sono ai livelli più alti di sempre.

C’è una comunicazione reale e la condivisione di informazioni tra il ministero e i rappresentanti dell’industria

It is indeed the rampant Czech companies, which the ministry looks at with particular interest. “The cooperation and relations with the local defence industry are at the highest levels ever.

There is a real communication and sharing of information between the Ministry and representatives of the defense and security”, confirmed Stropnický. “We recently presented our main acquisition

objectives to our partners of the specialized Czech industries in the defence sector” and in this perspective “we are interested in a strong involvement of Czech suppliers, for whom it is essential to create a manufacturing capacity for rapid delivery if necessary for times of crisis or national emergencies”.

So these are the specific areas, where the ministry will have to spend, and

della difesa e della sicurezza – ha confermato Stropnický. – Recentemente abbiamo presentato i nostri principali obiettivi di acquisizioni ai nostri partner delle industrie ceche specializzate nel segmento della Difesa” e in questa prospettiva “siamo interessati a un coinvolgimento forte dei fornitori cechi, per i quali è essenziale generare capacità di produzione per una rapida consegna in caso di necessità per crisi o emergenze nazionali”.

Ecco allora nel dettaglio dove dovrà spendere il ministero e quali sono i partner nazionali ed esteri con cui concluderà affari Praga nei prossimi anni.

Per quanto riguarda le forze di terra, troppo a lungo trascurate secondo Stropnický, gli investimenti dovranno essere fatti sui mezzi corazzati, mezzi per trasporto fuoristrada ed elicotteri.

Sul primo fronte sembra accreditata la Zetor Engineering di Brno che sta sviluppando moderni mezzi militari blindati cingolati IFV Wolfdog. Questi

potrebbero nei prossimi anni sostituire gli attuali e ormai antiquati anfibi Bvp2, inserendosi nella gara d’appalto per 200 nuovi blindati da 50 miliardi di corone (1,8 miliardi di euro). Il ministero della Difesa potrebbe anche acquistare entro il 2025 un lotto di carri armati per sostituire i T-72 di produzione sovietica. In questo caso, però, la scelta dovrebbe cadere sui Leopard tedeschi.

Inoltre il ministero ha in programma una commessa da venti miliardi di corone (720 milioni di euro) per com-

what the domestic and foreign partners to conclude Prague business in the coming years will be. Regarding the ground forces, too long neglected according to Stropnický, investments have to be made on armoured vehicles, off-road transport and helicopters.

On the first front, Zetor Engineering of Brno appears to have the credentials, and they are developing modern

military armored IFV Wolfdog vehicles.

These could replace the existing and by now outdated BVP-2 amphibian models in the coming years, having been inserted into the tender for 200 new armored vehicles worth 50 billion crowns (1.8 billion euros) each.

The Ministry of Defence may also buy a set of tanks to replace the Soviet manufactured T-72s in 2025. In this

case, however, the choice should fall on the German Leopards. In addition, the ministry is planning an order of twenty billion crowns (720 million euros) to buy 300 armored Titus 6X6 vehicles, produced by the Tatra of Jaroslav Strnad alongside the French Nexter.

The supplies should be provided in the five year period 2019-2023, in several installments.

Numeri enormi a cui si affiancano altre spese per gli elicotteri. In questa partita entra anche un po’ di Italia con gli elicotteri AW139 di Agusta Westland, che recentemente sembrano essere tornati favoriti nella gara miliardaria. Secondo indiscrezioni, gli elicotteri italiani avrebbero riguadagnato posizioni perché gli UH-1Y Venom dell’americana Bell Helicopter non sarebbero del tutto in linea coi parametri richiesti.

I settori di spesa sono veramente innumerevoli, dalla necessità di nuovi giubbotti anti-proiettile per i soldati in Afghanistan, all’acquisizione di fucili di precisione per i tiratori scelti.

Intanto i governi di Francia, Israele e Svezia hanno presentato al ministero ceco le offerte per la fornitura di Huge numbers to which we can add further expenses for helicopters. The sectors of expenditure are truly countless, from the need for bulletproof vests for soldiers in Afghanistan, to the acquisition of sniper rifles. Meanwhile, the governments of France, Israel and Sweden have submitted tenders for the supply of eight new 3D radar MADRs (Mobile Air Defence Radar) to the Czech Ministry, an operation of 3.6 billion crowns (133 million euros). The Czech Defence wants to make a final choice by the end of year. Last but not least, the project for a new missile system, which replaces the now obsolete anti-aircraft

otto nuovi radar 3D Madr (Mobile Air Defence Radar), una operazione da 3,6 miliardi di corone (133 milioni di euro). La Difesa ceca vuole effettuare la scelta finale entro fine anno.

Infine, ma non da meno, il progetto per un nuovo sistema missilistico, che sostituisca l’ormai obsoleto antiaereo 2K12 Ku. Un’operazione che potrebbe richiedere secondo gli esperti una spesa di decine di miliardi di corone. Già interpellati cinque produttori, fra cui Mbds, Eads e Raytheon. Uno degli argomenti a sostegno di questa operazione è la

necessità di difendere, in caso di attacchi, i siti nucleari.

Questi i numeri che dovrebbero far avvicinare Praga alle richieste di spese per la Difesa che la Nato fa ai suoi membri, il 2% del Pil. Un altro fronte che potrebbe dare slancio al settore è quello della difesa comune europea. La Ue, secondo il premier Bohuslav Sobotka, non può fare a meno di un esercito comune e l’attuale evolversi della situazione in Europa dimostra quanto sia importante l’appartenenza alla Nato e alla Ue. Posizione confermata dal ministro della Difesa: “Se l’area europea deve

rimanere stabile ed economicamente prospera, le forze armate ceche devono contribuire il più possibile per costruire una difesa comune nell’ambito della Nato e dell’Ue. Gli stati membri Ue dovrebbero investire di più nella Difesa e cercare di rafforzare la loro capacità militare. E questo sforzo dovrebbe rimanere comunque complementare alle attività della Nato per evitare duplicazioni. Per la Repubblica Ceca – ha concluso il ministro – la partecipazione attiva nel sistema di difesa collettivo Nato che poggia su relazioni transatlantiche forti resta centrale”.

One of the arguments in support of this operation is the need to defend nuclear sites, in case of attack.

These are the numbers that should enable Prague to meet requests for spending on Defence that NATO has made to its members, amounting to 2% of GDP.

Another front that could give the industry more momentum is that of the common European defence. The EU, according to Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, cannot do without a common army, and the current development of the situation in Europe shows how important membership in NATO and the EU is. A stance confirmed by the Minister of Defence: “If the European area should be stable and economically prosperous, the Czech armed forces should contrib-

ute as much as possible to build a common defence in NATO and the EU. The EU member states should invest more in Defence and try to strengthen their military capabilities. This effort should remain nevertheless complementary to the activities of NATO to avoid duplication. For the Czech Republic”, concluded the Minister, “the active participation in the NATO collective defense system that rests on strong transatlantic relationship remains central”.

GIORNALISMO 2.0 IN REPUBBLICA CECA JOURNALISM 2.0 IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC Dimenticatevi i reporter dal taccuino facile e la matita sempre appoggiata sull'orecchio; dimenticatevi i gilet a otto tasche colmi di note, fotografie, rullini e registratori; dimenticatevi, una volta per tutte, i giornalisti investigativi eleganza ed avventura à la Dustin Hoffman e Robert Redford in "Tutti gli uomini del presidente". Gli squali della redazione, oggi, hanno il viso nascosto da uno smartphone. È il giornalismo 2.0, l'aggiornamento della professione nell'era digitale.

Forget the reporters with the simple notebook, and a pencil always resting on their ear; forget the waistcoats with eight pockets full of notes, photographs, rolls of film and recorders; forget, once and for all, investigative journalists of elegance and adventure like Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford in "All the President's Men". The sharks of the editorial offices today, have their faces hidden by a smartphone.

It is journalism 2.0, the update of the profession in the digital era. We are not here to talk of surprises, for several years the technological revolution has deeply changed many professions.

However, this sector, in particular, has certainly grown in a rather drastic way recently.

But what is happening in the Czech Republic? The School of Social Sciences of Charles University in Prague has recently contributed to the realization of the Digital News Report 2016, the annual report from the Reuters Institute at Oxford which records the state of the

industry of digital information in the world.

The study, as expected, confirmed the rapid rise of digital information even in the Czech Republic. The first clue is commercial, as in this country, in recent months, the "online" industry has reached the print media in terms of advertising market, about 20% of the

total, while TV advertising still has the greatest share, with Česká Televize and TV Nova ruling the roost.

As expected, if the web is growing, the press is in crisis. Advertising has decreased, as has the percentage of people who read daily newspapers or weekly publications (an already critical percentage, from 38% to 34%), while

Si è discusso di storytelling e nuovi media, sicurezza e privacy, accuratezza e visualizzazioni. Al susseguirsi dei relatori, la platea prendeva silenziosamente appunti. Dimenticate carta e penna, un centinaio di persone con le dita su piccoli touchscreen, e solo alcuni, demodé, ricorrevano al tambureggiante ritmo della tastiera di un computer portatile.

La Repubblica Ceca è stato un ospite sicuramente interessato al tema.

Il paese ha dimostrato, negli ultimi anni, di sapere il fatto suo in questo settore, con un certo pragmatismo, ancora lontano dai giri di capitale dei colossi della Silicon Valley. Forse anche per lo scetticismo dei cechi nei riguardi di un'informazione al soldo dei magnati di turno, l'affidabilità dei numeri e della scienza ha un'aura

Forget pen and paper, a hundred people with their fingers on small touchscreens, and only a few, out of fashion, resorted to the drumming rhythm of the keyboard of their laptop.

The Czech Republic was certainly a host highly interested in the subject.

The country has proven in recent years, that it knows what's what in the sector, and with a certain pragmatism, even if far away from the flow of capital of the Silicon Valley giants. Perhaps due to the skepticism of the Czechs regarding information on the payroll of duty magnates, the reliability of the numbers and science has a comfortable aura. There are more amusing or light examples, like riding in a car with GPS, and recording the disconnections of the land, or other more complicated ones, like how to manage archives with ten million files.

Two young journalists, Jan Cibulka and Marcel Šulek, for example have experienced how the passion for electronics can create the basis for the "sensor journalism", based precisely on the electronic collection of information. An idea told through the megaphones of Český Rozhlas came from a daily annoyance: the terrible conditions of the D1 motorway between Prague and Brno. With a 15 euro kit consisting of a GPS sensor purchased online, duct tape and a smartphone, they managed to build a small accelerator that could "feel" the vibrations of the road. A Sunday return trip was enough to collect the necessary data and create a very detailed map (ten per second) of the motorway. Results? On the one hand, it is interesting to know that at kilometre 127 in the direction of Brno, between Velký Beranov and Měřín, there is a heavier vibration, a disconnection on the ground and at 100km/h, 0.2 seconds, loading a pressure of 16G (six-

Possibilmente, con dati concreti.

In the endless possibilities of the digital era, journalism 2.0, both at Czech and international level, has the balance between business and

quality imposed on it, and between marketing and information. If international readers are skeptical about the new media, the Czechs take this skepticism to an excessive level. The solution seems to be this: reliable and quality journalism. If possible, with concrete data.

Le sculture e i giocattoli in legno, i capolavori di vetro, cristallo e ceramica, le stoffe e i merletti, le marionette e i presepi animati. Tutto questo e molto altro possono confezionare le cosiddette “mani d’oro ceche” (zlaté české ručičky). Un modo di dire che da generazioni caratterizza i cechi come popolo di artigiani e amanti del fai da te e di cui vanno fieri. “Quello che sappiamo fare, preferiamo farcelo da soli” dice Roman. “C’è gente capace di rivolgersi a una ditta specializzata The sculptures and the wooden toys, glass, crystal and ceramic masterworks, fabrics and lacework, puppets and animated nativity scenes. Adults today remember how their parents and grandparents repaired furniture, a broken pipe or a broken down car without any difficulty, in addition to painting the house, wallpapering rooms, building tool sheds and in the case of the

Il mito delle mani d’oro capaci di modellare qualunque cosa trova conferma nel periodo dello sviluppo industriale, quando i congegni mec-

canici di fabbricazione boema erano piuttosto apprezzati. Come riporta il giornalista e pubblicista Tomáš Krystlík, fu in epoca austro-ungarica che prese piede la locuzione “die böhmischen goldenen Hände”. Nata per lodare la manualità degli artigiani cechi che arrivavano a Vienna, perlopiù di origine tedesca, fu poi estesa in generale a tutti gli abitanti delle Terre Ceche. Dopo il boom del-

La generazione più giovane non ha nemmeno gli esempi da cui imparare i fondamenti del lavoro edile o della falegnameria.

Tuttavia resta sempre valido il riferimento a un’innata capacità d’improvvisare e risolvere i problemi con ingegnosità e materie secondarie. most skilled, even the houses themselves. Le mani d’oro non forgiano solo pezzi da museo. František Hadrava ogni mattina va a lavorare pilotando un Minimax, un aereo costruito con le

proprie mani in due anni di lavoro. È partito da un modello americano degli anni ‘70 ma “l’ho realizzato secondo la mia visione. È unico” dice, “ed è un mezzo più economico dell’auto”. In meno di cinque minuti atterra vicino alla ditta in cui lavora che dista circa 15 km da casa sua. Re-

Czechs dedicates himself to reparation, mending and various chores. In fact, 46% of Czechs do not need help from friends or specialized companies, but can handle the most common repairs on their own if something needs to be refurbished or the walls repainted.

Yet 25.5% engage in craft activities at least once a week, perhaps taking a cue from all the programs dedicated to the theme on many television channels. About 28% of respondents will

refer to someone more skilled to take care of the house or garden, and only 10% never make use of the toolbox.

From small household jobs to record creations The new exhibition of the Museum of Records and Curiosities of Pelhřimov is indeed entitled Zlaté české ručičky. It presents over eighty constructions by Tomáš Korda with 571,871 matches, and 63,310 hours of work, including a guitar that really can be played. A glass

locomotive, a stone violin and a wooden bicycle are also fully functional; then there is a ship and a Prague Castle model made entirely with skewers and a Mona Lisa pictured with 40,000 coloured rice grains.

The golden hands do not only forge museum pieces. František Hadrava goes to work every morning piloting a Minimax, a plane built with his own hands in two years of work. It was based on an American model from the 70s, but

The manual skill has always been linked to the “golden brains” of researchers, engineers, technicians and builders. The TV series “Zlaté české ručičky” focuses on the work and findings of the Czechs who are dedicated to cosmic technologies.

Yet the newspapers are full of news, in which you can find complaints regarding the lack of these “golden hands”, the difficulty in finding skilled workers, who are blacksmiths, plumbers, cobblers or tailors. “There is a lack of

Nella corsa a una “società istruita” abbiamo dimenticato che questo Paese si basa sull’industria, sugli investimenti nella produzione e sul settore auto, che da più di cento anni sostengono la nostra economia”. Invece di dare peso alla formazione degli apprendisti, la società storce il naso davanti a un operaio perché gli manca un titolo. Non è raro sentir dire i genitori: “Non voglio che passi tutta la vita a sgobbare in fabbrica, prendi almeno la maturità!”.

Per dimostrare che l’abilità manuale ha un futuro, combattere il pregiudizio che un mestiere sia un’attività di serie B e incrementare il numero d’iscritti alle scuole professionali, sono utili le collaborazioni tra aziende e istituti tecnici, le borse di studio e

soprattutto eventi come il concorso nazionale “Zlaté české ručičky”, giunto all’ottava edizione e rivolto agli studenti delle scuole secondarie. Ogni anno il comitato organizzativo sceglie una ventina di professioni molto richieste ma minacciate da un interesse calante degli studenti e premia i migliori allievi: cuochi, pasticcieri, parrucchieri, giardinieri, meccanici, elettricisti, carpentieri e molti altri.

Qualche risultato si vede. Lo scorso anno agli istituti tecnici si sono iscritti oltre 37mila nuovi studenti; il boom è stato evidente per gli aspiranti spazzacamini. Molti indirizzi di studio, forse anche avventatamente chiusi, vengono ripristinati ma l’interruzione è stata lunga e i maestri più anziani sono ormai pensionati. Ci vorrà del tempo per riportare ai vecchi splendori quelle “mani d’oro” che con la loro attività artigianale hanno fatto conoscere in tutto il mondo i manufatti e i risultati delle ricerche della Repubblica Ceca.

Each year, the organizing committee chooses twenty highly demanded professions threatened by a waning interest of students, and rewards the best ones: cooks, pastry chefs, hairdressers, gardeners, mechanics, electricians, carpenters and many others.

Some results are visible. Last year at technical institutes, over 37,000 new students were registered; the boom was evident for the aspiring chimney sweeps. Many fields of study, perhaps rashly closed, are being brought back, but the interruption was long, the older teachers are now retired. It will take time to bring those “golden hands” back their old splendor, having once made the artifacts and the results of the research of the Czech Republic known all over the world through their craftsmanship.

La cancelliera tedesca torna nella capitale ceca dopo quattro anni di assenza e dopo infuocate polemiche fra Repubblica Ceca e Germania sul tema dell’accoglienza ai migranti.

“Fra i nostri paesi c’è intesa su tutti i fronti, ad eccezione della crisi migranti” dichiara il premier Bohuslav Sobotka nella conferenza stampa congiunta.

CRONACA

(8 agosto) Richieste asilo in calo. Nel primo semestre sono stati 765 gli stranieri richiedenti, 19 in meno rispetto stesso periodo del 2015, secondo ultime statistiche del ministero dell’Interno. La maggior parte sono stati ucraini: 246, quindi 134 in meno rispetto allo scorso anno. Al secondo posto gli iracheni, 131. Quest’ultima cifra è cresciuta in conseguenza dei circa 80 profughi iracheni, di religione cristiana, accolti dalla Repubblica ceca in gennaio.

ECONOMIA, AFFARI E FINANZA

(10 agosto) Nuovi proprietari polacchi per Čedok. Il più vecchio tour operator della Repubblica ceca, terza forza del mercato nazionale delle vacanze, viene ceduto dall’americana Odien Group alla polacca Itaka. Il corrispettivo non viene reso noto, ma dovrebbe superare la cifra di mezzo miliardo di corone. L’operazione attende solo il definitivo via libera da parte dell’Authority antitrust. Itaka è una agenzia nata nei primi anni ‘90, coi viaggi dei pellegrini polacchi in trasferta a Roma per le udienze di Giovanni Paolo II. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– (12 agosto) Interscambio Rep.ceca/Italia da record. Nel primo semestre cresce del 13,7% rispetto a stesso periodo 2015, per un valore che supera i sei miliardi di euro, dopo che nel 2015 era stata raggiunta per la prima volta la cifra di 10,5 miliardi, con un incremento del 9%, stesso aumento peraltro del 2014. “I numeri del

primo semestre sono a dir poco incoraggianti” dichiara Matteo Mariani, segretario generale della Camera di Commercio Italo-Ceca, nel commentare i dati. La bilancia commerciale pende a favore della Repubblica Ceca per circa mezzo miliardo.

Il produttore ceco è al terzo posto nella classifica delle case automobilistiche che riescono a guadagnare di più per ogni vettura venduta, alle spalle solo di Porsche e di Ferrari. E’ quanto emerge da una indagine, comprendente 15 produttori mondiali, effettuata dalla Università di Duisburg-Essen.

Dal 2010 l’export ceco verso la Germania è aumentato in misura maggiore della metà, mentre le importazioni sono salite addirittura del 60%. I quasi quattromila investitori tedeschi detengono attualmente una quota del 21,9% del capitale straniero in Rep. ceca. La Germania, con una quota del 32%, è il principale paese di destinazione dell’export ceco, con un incremento lo scorso anno dell’8,6%.

Il risultato è che il prezzo lo scorso anno in Repubblica Ceca è aumentato del 16,5%, portando la valutazione media a 166 mila corone per ettaro, mentre nel 2004 non arrivava a 70 mila. Nel primo semestre di quest’anno si sarebbe verificato un ulteriore rincaro di circa il 20%, sfiorando la cifra di 200 mila corone per ettaro. I terreni migliori si vendono anche a 30 czk/mq. Non manca chi teme effetto bolla.

Nel secondo trimestre di quest’anno sale a 27.297 corone, quindi il 3,9% in più rispetto a 12 mesi prima. Si tratta dell’incremento annuo più elevato degli ultimi nove anni, come sottolinea l’Ufficio di statistica.

L’incremento del valore reale è del 3,7%.

Ad aumentare maggiormente sono gli stipendi dei dipendenti delle banche e delle compagnie di assicurazione. La media della città di Praga è pari a quasi 35 mila corone, la più elevata fra tutte le regioni ceche. La meno elevata nella regione di Karlovy Vary, 23 mila corone.

Il governo vi inserisce un deficit previsionale di 60 miliardi di corone. La stampa mette in risalto quanto abbia contato l’attuale clima preelettorale nel definire il budget 2017. Il voto delle regionali e delle senatoriali si avvicina e al governo serve mostrarsi generoso. Il risultato è che il prossimo anno il funzionamento dello Stato costerà 86 miliardi di corone in più. Incide il generale incremento degli stipendi statali, con aumenti che vanno dal 5 al 10%. Crescono anche le pensioni.

Destinazione alberghiera per gli ultimi due piani della celebre Casa danzante, realizzata negli anni Novanta, su progetto degli architetti Frank O. Gehry e Vlado Milunić e considerato uno degli edifici più significativi della Praga post ‘89. Camere quasi tutte con vista verso il Castello. Se il progetto dovesse rivelarsi vincente, è già pronta estensione dell’albergo agli altri piani.

La Repubblica Ceca fa un salto di 14 posizioni rispetto alla classifica del 2015.

Si fa apprezzare soprattutto per il sistema scolastico educativo e altri parametri legati alla qualità della vita per la famiglia.

L’Ufficio statistico evidenzia per il secondo trimestre un tasso di aumento di +2,6% del Pil, rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2015, dopo il +3% del trimestre precedente. Si tratta di uno degli incrementi più elevato fra i paesi della Ue. Su base trimestrale l’incremento del Pil è dello 0,9%.

(21 agosto) Dieci le medaglie ceche alle Olimpiadi. I Giochi di Rio de Janeiro si concludono con un bilancio considerato positivo per gli atleti della Repubblica ceca un oro, due argenti e sette bronzi – che chiude così al 43° posto nel medagliere complessivo.

Aveva 74 anni. Grande risalto il anche nei media internazionali. “Eroe dello sport e non solo” titola in Italia La Repubblica, ricordando il coraggio con la quale la ginnasta, prese posizione nel 1968 contro l’invasione sovietica. Il museo DOX di Praga celebra quelli che sarebbero stati gli ottant’anni di Václav Havel con un’ampia rassegna fotografica. Oltre trecento scatti dei fotografi Tomki Němec e Bohdan Holomíček, che immortalarono momenti storici e privati della vita del drammaturgo, politico e cittadino Havel. Němec, fotografo ufficiale del presidente, durante la mostra presenterà il suo libro “Václav Havel – Tomki Němec – Fotografie”.

Holomíček, che ritrasse i protagonisti del dissenso, negli anni ‘70 conobbe Havel e la moglie Olga e fermò su pellicola molti eventi mondani e culturali organizzati dalla coppia. La Galleria della Casa Danzante ospita la mostra JKOK, dedicata all’architetto Jan Kaplický. Il sottotitolo “L’infinito di Jan Kaplický” allude al suo farsi interprete di un’architettura visionaria, proiettata al futuro, ma la rassegna ce lo propone anche come architetto ecologista e designer di gioielli, stoviglie e moda. La prima delle tre sezioni dell’esposizione presenta sia la vita dell’artista tramite bozzetti, fotografie e suoi pensieri, sia le opere chiave o le proposte come il modello della Biblioteca Nazionale noto come Blob o Polipo.

Il Centro Ceco della Fotografia organizza una mostra per celebrare i 120 anni dalla nascita e i 40 dalla scomparsa del fotografo cecoslovacco Josef Sudek, un artista che in una carriera lunga oltre sei decenni ha lasciato un segno in patria e all’estero. Noto soprattutto per i paesaggi e per l’accurato studio della luce, era soprannominato “il poeta di Praga” per le diapositive scattate nella capitale. Quest’esposizione, oltre alle sue fotografie, raccoglie ritratti di Sudek e scatti che documentano la sua vita e il suo lavoro nell’atelier praghese ad opera di altri artisti cechi, nonché le opere di allievi e successori. The Prague DOX museum is celebrating what would have been Václav Havel’s eightieth birthday with a large collection of photographs. Over three hundred snapshots from Photographer Tomki Němec, and Bohdan Holomíček, who immortalized historic and private moments in the life of the playwright, politician and citizen Havel. Němec, the official photographer of the President, will present his book during the exhibition: “Václav Havel – Tomki Němec – Photographs.”

Holomíček, who photographed the protagonists of the dissent, met Havel and his wife Olga in the 70s, and captured many social and cultural events organized by the couple on film. In addition to photos, a new documentary by director Petr Jančárek recounts the last years of life of the president. The Gallery of the Dancing House is hosting the JKOK exhibition, dedicated to architect Jan Kaplický. The subheading “The Infinity of Jan Kaplický” alludes to his interpretation of visionary architecture, projected towards the future, but the festival also suggests him to be an ecological architect and designer of jewelry, tableware and fashion. The first of the three sections of the exhibition presents the artist’s life both through sketches, photographs and his thoughts, both the key works or proposals such as the National Library model known as The Blob or Octopus. The second focuses on his family and sources of inspiration, the third on the creative process. The Czech Centre of Photography has organized an exhibition to celebrate 120 years since the birth, and 40 after the death of Czechoslovakian photographer Josef Sudek, an artist who in a career spanning over six decades made a mark both at home and abroad. Best known for his landscapes and for his thorough study of light, he was nicknamed “the Prague poet” for diapositives taken in the capital. The exhibition, besides his photographs, collects portraits of Sudek and photos documenting his life and work atelier in Prague, made by other Czech artists, as well as displaying the works of his students and successors. Named the best Christmas destination in the world for 2015 by a survey of American newspaper Today, the Prague Christmas markets reopen on November 26 with the majestic lighting of the tree in Old Town Square. At the feet of the spruce, special guests and choirs sing Christmas carols, living animals evoke the atmosphere of the nativity scene while dozens of stalls offer visitors artifacts and decorations, good food and inviting sweets. While walking between one stall and another, guests can warm themselves up with the classic mulled wine, served in a special cup that they can take home as a souvenir. Among the most anticipated initiatives is the arrival of St. Nicholas with gifts and surprises for children, and the distribution of the traditional fish soup on Christmas Eve. www.trhypraha.cz

Paolo Virzi’s “Like Crazy” will open the fourth edition of the Prague Mittel Cinema Fest, the Central European Festival of Italian cinema, which through ten films will present the best of modern cinema of the Belpaese to the Czech public. After the stage at Lucerna Cinema Prague (Dec. 1-5), which concludes with the Italian soundtracks of the Classic & Jazz concert conducted by Maestro Walter Attanasi, the traveling show will return to the Cinema Art of Brno (December 12th-13th) for the second time, and will debut at Kotva Cinema in České Budějovice (13th-14th).

The screening of Café Society follows, the latest Woody Allen film with cinematography entrusted to Storaro. Finally at Clam-Gallas Palace the closing ceremony of the photo exhibition “Roman civilization,” will take place, which entirely dedicated to images depicting the Roman era made by the award-winning “master of light.”

La mattina del 27 maggio 1943 Reinhard Heydrich, il dittatore de facto del Protettorato di Boemia e Moravia, salì sulla solita cabriolet MercedesBenz W142, di fianco all’autista, per il tragitto quotidiano dal villaggio di Panenské Břežany al Castello di Praga. Questa volta, tuttavia, una sorpresa avrebbe stravolto la routine giornaliera. Nella zona di Libeň, vicino all’ospedale di Bulovka, la strada disegnava una curva molto stretta, in salita, tale che le auto erano obbligate a rallentare. This time, however, a surprise awaiting him, would upset his daily routine. In the Libeň area, near Bulovka hospital, there was a sharp uphill turn in the road, forcing all cars to slow down. It was here where, once he received the signal, Corporal Jozef Gabčík suddenly leapt onto the street with a submachine gun in his hands, to shoot at the approaching Mercedes;

Eppure la missione dei partigiani – un’azione concordata tra il governo ceco a Londra, la resistenza nazionale ed il governo inglese – riuscì lo stesso a portare alla morte del “boia di Praga”, che morì in ospedale otto giorni dopo, il 4 giugno 1942, per setticemia. Un episodio che rese Hitler furibondo, sia per la fiducia che aveva in Heydrich, sia per il fatto che l’ultimo si arrischiasse a tal modo a viaggiare per la città senza una scorta o una macchina blindata.

L’incredibile storia dei paracadutisti cecoslovacchi, addestrati nel Regno Unito dalla Royal Air Force britannica per uccidere il generale delle SS, è già stata il soggetto di vari film che hanno raccontato la missione e la barbarica rappresaglia che ne seguì.

Il primo, Anche i boia muoiono (1943, Stati Uniti) del maestro dell’espressionismo Fritz Lang, austriaco, emigrato negli Usa, rimane uno dei più importanti, nonostante c’entri poco con la realtà. Il regista austriaco scrisse la sceneggiatura solo dieci giorni dopo l’attentato con il drammaturgo e poeta tedesco Bertolt Brecht, il quale come Lang fuggì dalla Germania a causa dell’ascesa del nazismo. Se le vicende rappresentate nel film corrispondono poco con quelle vere, l’opera antinazista spicca per i tocchi espressionisti nella bella fotografia di James Wong Howe, e l’abilità di Lang e Brecht di porre complesse questioni morali.

Nella ex Cecoslovacchia, la rielaborazione più acclamata dell’attentato è sicuramente Atentát (1964), diretto

but the machine gun got jammed. A second man, Corporal Jan Kubiš, who had been standing on the pavement, threw a hand grenade under the car of the general, blowing it slightly off the ground. The two fled, convinced they had failed in their objective.

Nevertheless, the mission of the partisans, one planned by the exiled Czech government in London, the Czechoslovak Resistance, and the British government, still managed to cause the death of the “butcher of Prague”, who died in hospital eight days later, on the 4th of June 1942 of septicemia. The episode enraged Hitler, both due to the esteem he held in Heydrich, and the fact that

the latter took a great risk by travelling around the city without an escort or a bulletproof car. The incredible story of Czechoslovak paratroopers, trained in the United Kingdom by the British Royal Air Force to assassinate the SS general, has already been the subject of various films that have depicted the mission, or the barbaric reprisals that followed.

The first, Hangmen Also Die (1943, United States) from the master of expressionism Fritz Lang, an Austrian who emigrated to the US, remains one of the most significant, even if it has little to do with the real history. The Austrian director wrote the screenplay just

Il film è considerato il miglior lavoro del cineasta di Brno, il quale viene ricordato come un regista di talento ma che si compromise per fare opere propagandistiche del regime comunista. Sequens creò sicuramente il film più completo sull’attentato, mostrando anche l’addestramento dei paracadutisti nel Regno Unito ed evidenziando le loro preoccupazioni su quale sarebbe stata la reazione tedesca. La pellicola vinse il Premio d’oro al Festival cinematografico internazionale di Mosca del 1965 e purtroppo è stata vista molto poco fuori i confini dell’ex blocco sovietico.

L’Operazione Anthropoid fu anche il tema del film americano E l’alba si macchiò di rosso (1975) diretto da un regista di vari film di 007, Lewis Gilbert. Si tratta di un film che interessa per le scene d’azione e lo spazio dedicato al personaggio di Heydrich,

ten days after the attack, with German poet and playwright Bertolt Brecht, who like Lang fled Germany due to the rise of Nazism. If the events shown in the film correspond little with the real ones, this anti-Nazi piece stands out for the expressionistic touches in the stunning black and white photography of James Wong Howe, and Lang and Brecht’s skill in raising complex moral issues.

In the former Czechoslovakia, the most acclaimed dramatisation of the assassination is surely Atentát (1964), directed by Jiří Sequens. The film is considered the best work of the Brno-born filmmaker, who today is remembered as a gifted director, albeit one who compromised to make propaganda films for the communist regime. Sequens certainly made the most complete film on the operation, showing

everything from the paratroop training in Britain, and highlighting their concerns about what the German reaction could be. The film won the Golden Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1965, but unfortunately was seen very little outside the borders of the former Soviet bloc. Operation Anthropoid was also the theme of the American film Operation Daybreak (1975) directed by Lewis Gilbert, who has been at the helm of various Bond films. It is a film notable for the action scenes and the greater space dedicated to the character of Heydrich, but overall it does not bring anything new to the subject. Also Lidice (2011), from Alice Nellis, describes the aftermath of the assassination, and the brutal German reprisals, but despite its promise, the end result was a rather disappointing work with a decent performance

ma complessivamente non porta niente di nuovo all’argomento. Anche Lidice (2011), di Alice Nellis, parla dei postumi dell’attentato e della brutale rappresaglia tedesca, ma sebbene promettesse molto, alla fine il risultato è stato un’opera deludente, con una buona interpretazione di Karel Roden e diversi momenti commoventi, ma poco più.

Anthropoid arriva al cinema cinque anni dopo la delusione di Lidice, un progetto di cui si è parlato molto nel

Paese, già durante le riprese a Praga, l’anno passato.

Il film statunitense co-prodotto da Regno Unito, Francia e Repubblica Ceca, può vantare un cast di importanti attori internazionali come gli irlandesi Cillian Murphy e Jamie Dornan nei ruoli di Gabčík e Kubiš, ma compaiono anche volti conosciuti del cinema ceco come Anna Geislerová e Alena Mihulová. I produttori (fra i quali anche il regista ceco David Ondříček) hanno sottolineato gli sforzi per ricostruire il periodo,

mentre il regista inglese Sean Ellis si è a lungo documentato per dare al film la maggiore aderenza storica possibile.

L’accoglienza del film al festival di Karlovy Vary a luglio è stata positiva – ma si tratta veramente della trasposizione cinematografica più riuscita sull’Operazione Anthropoid?

La pellicola ripercorre gli episodi a partire dall’arrivo dei paracadutisti Gabčík e Kubiš nel Protettorato, il loro viaggio a Praga per mettersi in contatto con quello che rimane della resistenza

cecoslovacca e preparare l’attentato.

Se la prima metà della pellicola scorre lentamente, l’azione scatta nella scena dell’agguato, una scena ad alta tensione diretta magistralmente in cui si percepiscono timori e dubbi dei protagonisti. Ellis riesce a mantenere la tensione fino alla lunga ultima sequenza, in cui le truppe naziste assaltano la cattedrale dei Santi Cirillo e Metodio, rifugio dei partigiani che avevano preso parte all’operazione. Finale con un forte senso di claustrofobia che rievoca

Anthropoid arrives in cinema theatres five years after the disappointment of Lidice, and was already a much discussed project in the country, during the filming in Prague, last year.

The US film, co-produced by the UK, France and the Czech Republic, boasts a cast of important international stars such as Irish actors Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan in the roles of Gabčík

and Kubiš, but also familiar faces from Czech cinema including those of Anna Geislerová and Alena Mihulová.

The producers (among whom also the Czech director David Ondříček) have stressed the efforts made to recreate the period, while the British director Sean Ellis carried out extensive research to give the film the greatest possible historical accuracy. The reception of the film at the Karlovy Vary festival in July was quite positive, but can we

really consider it the most successful film representation of Operation Anthropoid?

The film retraces the historical episodes starting from the arrival of paratroopers Gabčík and Kubiš in the Protectorate, and their journey to Prague in order to get in touch with what remains of the Czechoslovak resistance to prepare the attack. If the first half of the film progresses slowly, the action is triggered in the scene of the

assassination, a masterfully directed scene of high tension in which you genuinely sense the fear and doubt of the protagonists. Ellis manages to maintain the tension right up to the long final sequence, in which the Nazi troops besiege the cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the refuge of the partisans who had taken part in the operation. A finale with a strong sense of claustrophobia reminiscent of similar scenes in other classic war movies

scene simili in altri classici film di guerra, come I dannati di Varsavia (1957) di Andrzej Wajda, o Das Boot (1981).

Detto ciò, è un’opera che si concentra principalmente sulle scene d’azione, e come la maggior parte dei film sull’argomento, manca di un’approfondita analisi degli eventi. Ellis cerca di portare alla luce le incertezze della resistenza e del gruppo Anthropoid, tuttavia sarebbe stato interessante vedere anche la presenza del governo ceco, il quale coordinava le attività del gruppo dal suo esilio a Londra. Sebbene abbia dei momenti di grande forza emotiva, rimane un’opera di toni variabili con una stagnante prima parte, con toni simili a quanto ci si potrebbe aspettare da una serie Tv britannica.

Tutto sommato, Anthropoid merita una visione, ma non riesce ad offrire idee o interpretazioni che non siano già presenti nei film precedenti sull’agguato. Fa piacere vedere il racconto della missione sul grande schermo, in

una produzione di grande portata, ma si distingue troppo poco da film come Atentát. Altre opere sono riuscite inoltre in qualcosa che manca a quest’ultima, ovvero a catturare e ricreare l’atmosfera di terrore che pervase Praga in seguito alla uccisione del Reichsprotektor. Di quest’ultimo aspetto è stato un ottimo esempio Principio Superiore (Vyšší princip), diretto da Jiří Krejčík e uscito nel 1959, il quale racconta la storia di tre studenti in un liceo classico di Praga, che vengono arrestati e

condannati a morte per aver scherzato sulla morte di Heydrich.

Tuttavia, chi non si sentisse soddisfatto da Anthropoid dovrà aspettare solo qualche mese per il prossimo film sull’attentato. Il titolo sarà HHhH, una produzione francese, girata a Praga e basata sull’omonimo libro di Laurent Binet. La pellicola uscirà già nel 2017 e promette di concentrarsi sulla figura di Heydrich. Vedremo se sarà questo il film definitivo sull’Operazione Anthropoid.

like Andrzej Wajda’s Kanał (1957), or Das Boot (1981). That said, it is a work that focuses primarily on the action scenes, and like most of the films on the theme, it maybe lacks an in-depth analysis of historical events. Ellis tries to bring to light the uncertainties of the resistance and Anthropoid group, however it would have been interesting to see the presence of the Czech government, who were coordinating the group’s activities from their place of exile in London. Although it has moments of great emotional power, it remains a work of variable tones with a sluggish first half, with feel one might expect from a BBC TV series.

All in all, Anthropoid deserves a viewing, but fails to offer ideas or interpretations that are not already present in the previous films on the mission. It is pleasing nevertheless, to see the story told on the big screen, in a large-scale production, but does not do enough to

distinguish itself from films like Atentát. Besides, other works have managed to capture what is missing here, and recreate the atmosphere of terror that pervaded Prague following the killing of Reichsprotektor. An excellent example of the latter aspect would be Higher Principle (Vyšší princip), directed by Jiří Krejčík and released in 1959, which tells the story of three students in a high school in Prague, who are arrested and sentenced to death for having joked about Heydrich’s death.

However, those left unsatisfied with Anthropoid will only have to wait a few months for the next film on the assassination. The title will be HHhH, a French production, filmed in Prague and based on the book from Laurent Binet. The film will be already released in 2017 and promises to focus more on the figure of Heydrich. Just a short wait to see if this will be the definitive film on Operation Anthropoid.

European eating habits are changing and Czechia is no exception: local cuisines are becoming greener

Tra il 1990 e il 2010, la Repubblica Ceca, secondo le statistiche, è stata tra i primi paesi al mondo per consumo annuale pro capite di carni animali. I cechi sono orgogliosi della loro tradizione culinaria che, sia per motivi storici sia geografici e climatici, vede la carne protagonista assoluta a tavola, preparata in molti modi e secondo innumerevoli ricette. Ma se svíčková, guláš e vepřové koleno sono ancora i piatti preferiti in Cèchia, qualcosa, poco alla volta, sta cambiando. Sempre secondo le statistiche, infatti, dal 2011 ad oggi il consumo di carni in generale nel Paese si è sensibilmente ridotto a favore di un maggior utilizzo nell’alimentazione quotidiana di prodotti di origine vegetale. Nel 2014 il consumo di verdura annuo pro capite ha toccato gli 86,4 kg, quasi 10 kg in più rispetto a soli 2 anni prima, mentre quello di carne è sceso a 75,9 kg contro i quasi 80 kg del 2010.

I cechi, quindi, stanno diventando vegetariani? THE GIANT STEPS OF THE VEG PEOPLE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC sensibile cambiamento di abitudini nell’alimentazione di una buona fetta della popolazione che, se non è diventata completamente vegetariana o vegana, ha comunque volutamente ridotto il consumo di carne.

Ma quali sono le cause di tale cambiamento nelle abitudini alimentari? A modificare le scelte alimentari negli ultimi anni ha contribuito certamente anche la consapevolezza dei rischi per la salute che un consumo eccesivo di carne comporta, come proprio recentemente ha sottolineato anche l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, suscitando non poche polemiche da parte dei sostenitori di regime alimentare principalmente carnivoro. Non è poi trascurabile il fattore moda che spesso, nel far prediligere certi alimenti piuttosto che altri, esula da profonde motivazioni ambientali, etiche, religiose o salutistiche.

Ma chi sono i vegetariani e i vegani cechi? A meno che non siano incorsi motivi medici che sconsigliano il

consumo di carni animali, l’identikit del ceco “veg“ è abbastanza facile da compilare. Generalmente la categoria è più rappresentata nei giovani tra i 18 e i 35 anni. A fare questa scelta sono più donne che uomini e, normalmente, persone con un livello di istruzione medio alto, soprattutto provenienti dalle grandi città. Alla domanda sul perché abbiano deciso di rinunciare alla carne, rispondono adducendo motivi soprattutto ambientali, come il rispetto per gli animali, e salutistici, ma sono in molti anche quelli che dicono che non ci sono stati motivi particolari a spingerli in questa direzione.

Non sempre però è possibile parlare di vegetariani “puri”, o distinguere tra varie abitudini alimentari tendenzialmente vegetariane o vegane. C’è, ad esempio, chi non mangia carne ma il pesce sì, oppure esclude solo certi tipi di carni, e via dicendo, così come ci sono anche quelli che decidono di seguire tale dieta solo in alcuni momenti dell’anno o per periodi di tempo definiti. Secondo l’agenzia “StemMark”,

nel 2013 i vegetariani nel paese erano il 2% della popolazione e negli ultimi due anni la percentuale è sicuramente salita.

A prova di ciò c’è l’alto numero di ristoranti a tema aperti, soprattutto a Praga negli ultimi anni. Se fino a 10 anni fa questi ristoranti nella città erano piuttosto rari, e gli unici piatti a disposizione nelle classiche birrerie e trattorie, per gli irriducibili vegetariani guardati dai camerieri con sospetto, erano “Smažený sýr“ e “Šopský salát“, ovvero formaggio fritto e un‘insalata in stile balcanico, adesso la situazione è cambiata e in ogni quartiere praghese la scelta è abbastanza vasta. Ad oggi i ristoranti vegani e vegetariani presenti nella Repubblica Ceca sono oltre 100, di cui 32 solo nella capitale. Il dato è particolarmente interessante se incrociato con una statistica del 2016 che vede la Repubblica Ceca al terzo posto in Europa per numero di queste attività per milione di abitanti, con il sorprendente dato di 13,7 – appena un deci-

Are Czechs, then, becoming vegetarian? Surely not, but this is indicative of a significant change in eating habits by a considerable portion of the population that, although not completely vegetarian or vegan, has, however, deliberately reduced the consumption of meat. But what are the causes of this change in eating habits? The change, that has taken place over the last few years, is cer-

tainly due to greater awareness of health risks, associated with an eccessive consumption of meat, that was also highlighted recently by the World Health Organization and that provoked quite a lot of controversy on the part of meat-eating supporters.

We must also take into consideration traditional and fashionable aspects that, by priviliging certain foods over others, have tended to overlook the deeper environmental, ethical, religious and health motivations.

But who are the Czech vegetarians and vegans? Unless affected by health issues, that advise against the consumption of animal meat, the classification of a Czech “veg“ is

quite easy. Generally speaking, most of them belong to the class of young people, between the age of 18 and 35.

It is women, more than men, that decide to make this choice, particularly those with medium-high level education and that tend to live in big cities.

When asked why they had decided to stop eating meat products, the reply is that they did it especially for environmental reasons, their concern for animals and their own health, but there are many others who simply stated that there were no particular reasons for their choice. But, it is not always proper to speak of „genuine“ vegetarians or to distinguish between the various basic vegetarian or vegan eating

Altrettanto numerosi sono i negozi specializzati in alimenti raw, vegetariani e vegani presenti su tutto il territorio nazionale. Dietro alcuni ristoranti e bistrò “veg“ cechi vi sono vere e proprie associazioni culturali che hanno fatto di questa cultura alimentare, oltre a uno stile di vita, anche un vero e proprio business. Tra i tanti si segnalano la catena di fastfood vegani “LovingHut” che, nata negli USA, è presente in 35 paesi e detiene il primato per numero di esercizi commerciali di questo tipo al mondo, e l’associazione culturaleristorante “Maitrea” che possiede anche un negozio e organizza corsi di medicina alternativa, seminari “New age” e altro. “LovingHut” è famosa per la sua cucina di ispirazione orientale che prepara i cibi secondo i canoni della tradizione buddhista

To date, there are more than 100 vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the Czech Republic, of which 32 in the capital alone. This figure is particularly interesting when we compare it to the 2016 figures, where the Czech Republic is in third place in Europe for the number of activities per million of the population, with the surprising figure of 13.7 - just a tenth lower than

Austria, that is in second place in the classification led by Iceland with 24.8.

Equally numerous are the number of shops specialized in raw, vegetarian and vegan food that is available throughout the national territory.

Behind some of these Czech “veg“ restaurants and bistros, there are real cultural associations that have turned this food culture and lifestyle into a real business. Among them, there is “Loving Hut“, the vegans fast-

food chain, that was founded in the USA and which is now present in 35 countries and that is in first position for the number of shops of this type around the world, and the restaurant-cultural association “Maitrea“, that also owns a shop and organizes alternative medicine courses, “New age“ seminars, and other activities.

Se ciò sia il frutto di una tendenza momentanea o l’inizio di un importante cambiamento culturale anche nella Repubblica Ceca, è ancora presto per dirlo, ma gli indizi lasciano pensare che, probabilmente, si tratti di qualcosa di più rispetto a una semplice moda passeggera.

traditions, and that despite the rigorous selection of ingredients, reminds us, for its shape and taste, of traditional meat and fish dishes.

However, vegetarianism in the Czech Republic is older than you might think.

In the Middle Ages, even at these latitudes, it was considered a form of religious asceticism, and it seems, that one of the first prominent supporters

of this diet was St. Agnes of Bohemia in the thirteenth century. In the nineteenth century, the Lázně Jeseník doctors used to advise their patients to follow a vegetarian diet as an adjuvant to the treatment of certain diseases, and in the late 19th century, there were already a few of shops in this Country that sold vegetarian products similar to those of today.

Therefore, it was quite common even in those days for Czechs to be able to make their choice of food, and among the famous names today we have the painter František Kupka, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk or Franz Kafka.

During the First World War, there were about 30 restaurants of this kind in Czechoslovakia, and that period saw the birth of the first associations involved in promoting its ideals and philosophy of life. However, their activities were stopped after the introduction of real socialism and the associations were eventually considered unlawful and potentially subversive!

It was only at the end of the 1980s that we hear again of vegetarian diet and culture in Czechoslovakia, when several books on the subject were reprinted. Today, libraries offer a large number of publications highlighting the benefits of a “veg diet“, with a growing number of associations and clubs dedicated to promoting this style of life as an important component of their philosophy. However, whether it is the result of a temporary trend or the beginning of an important cultural change in the Czech Republic, is still early to say, but the evidence shows that it might be more than just a passing fad.

UN COLPO DI TOSSE, E ADDIO IMPERATORE A cento anni dalla morte dell’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe, ricordiamo il rapporto che egli ebbe con il Regno di Boemia, dall’incoronazione a Olomouc, sino alla morte nel 1916 di Sergio Tazzer

One hundred years after the death of Emperor Franz Joseph, we remember the relationship he had with the Kingdom of Bohemia, from his coronation in Olomouc, until his death in 1916

Rigido e rigoroso, prima di tutto verso se stesso, pretendeva analogo comportamento anche dai suoi collaboratori e, se possibile, pure dai suoi sudditi che avrebbe preferito tutti in divisa, quella che lui stesso indossò a tredici anni.

Francesco Giuseppe d’Asburgo Lorena, derewige Kaiser, l’imperatore eterno, nacque nel Castello di Schönbrunn il 18 agosto 1830 e vi morì, a pochi passi dalla stanza dov’era venuto alla luce il 21 novembre 1916: aveva 86 anni.

Accettò la corona nell’anno delle rivoluzioni, il 2 dicembre 1948. Vienna era in tumulto e l’incoronazione avvenne nella più sicura Olomouc (Olmütz). Lo zio Ferdinando aveva abdicato ed il padre, Francesco Carlo, aveva rinunciato al trono. Congiura di palazzo? Fatto è che Francesco Giuseppe divenne imperatore.

Il 6 aprile precedente, dopo che il principe Metternich era stato costretto alle dimissioni, il giovane Francesco Giuseppe era stato nominato governatore della Boemia, incarico che mai prese in effettivo possesso: un atteggiamento non positivo verso le terre slave nordoccidentali che mantenne nel corso del suo lungo regno.

Rigid and strict, first of all towards himself, he demanded similar behavior also from his staff, and if possible, even from his subjects whom he would prefer all to be in uniform, the one he wore at the age of thirteen.

Franz Joseph of Habsburg-Lorraine, der ewige Kaiser, the eternal emperor, was born in Schönbrunn Palace on August the 18th, 1830, and also died there, just a few steps from the room where he had come to light on November 21, 1916: he was 86 years old.

He accepted the crown in the year of revolutions, on the 2nd of December 1948. Vienna was in turmoil, and the coronation took place in the safer Olomouc (Olmütz). His uncle Ferdinand had abdicated and his father, Francis Charles, had renounced the throne.

Palace coup? The fact is that Francis Joseph became Emperor.

Nei primi passi da monarca, ad aiutarlo fu un principe boemo di Český Krumlov (Bömisch Krumau), Felix zu Schwarzenberg, statista di vaglia. E fu un altro nobile boemo di Sedlčany (Seltschan), reduce delle guerre napoleoniche, Jan Josef Václav Radecký z Radče, il mare-

sciallo Josef Radetzky, il suo mentore militare, che aveva conosciuto alla battaglia di Santa Lucia, presso Verona, il 6 maggio precedente.

Nonostante questi rimandi storici e personali che avrebbero dovuto legarlo alla Boemia, con essa tenne un contegno ambiguo e distaccato. Gli aristocratici boemi insistettero invano

affinché i diritti che vantava trovassero formata attuazione; nell’aprile del 1861 egli ricevette una delegazione della Dieta boema cui disse che intendeva incoronarsi a Praga. Francesco Giuseppe in realtà mai si pose in capo la Svatováclavská Koruna, pur vantando nella sua ricca panoplia di titoli anche quello di re di Boemia.

L’opinione pubblica ceca non gli perdonò la vicenda della deportazione del letterato, giornalista e patriota Karel Havlíček Borovský, liberale, il quale proponeva l’unione dei cechi e degli slovacchi, in più era anche anticlericale non pentito. Mentre il ministro degli Interni, Alexander von Bach, un Klerikalabsolutist, ne suggeriva la deportazione da Praga a Salisburgo, Francesco Giuseppe ordinò che il luogo di confino doveva essere ben più distante, sicché il patriota e letterato Havlíček Borovský andò a finire

nella lontana Bressanone, senza alcuna sentenza di tribunale: aveva deciso personalmente Francesco Giuseppe.

Il caso Havlíčék Borovský (il letterato descrisse la sua triste deportazione nelle Tyrolské elegie, Le elegie del Tirolo, un’autobiografia etica) pesò fortemente sul futuro dei rapporti fra il mondo ceco illuminato e patriottico e Vienna.

Le residue speranze boeme furono spazzate via nel 1866, dopo la sconfitta austriaca nella battaglia di Hradec Králové, che gli italiani conoscono come battaglia di Sadowa.

Pur religioso fino alla bigotteria, Francesco Giuseppe coltivava le sue superstizioni, annettendo le sue antipatie ai luoghi dove gli era andata, militarmente, male.

The previous April the 6th, after the prince Metternich had been forced to resign, the young emperor was appointed governor of Bohemia, a post however which he never actually took up: a rather negative attitude towards the north-western Slavic lands that he maintained during his long reign.

In Olomouc, he immediately had the support of arms, which were guaranteed by Styrian Field Marshal Alfred CandiduszuWindisch-Graez who swore allegiance immediately. Windisch-Graetz was a genuine reactionary and a hard-headed tough character. His wife was killed by a gunshot during the revolutionary upheavals of Prague, which he fiercely repressed by imposing martial law and did not hesitate to bomb the city.

In the early stages of his monarchy, he was helped by a Bohemian prince of Český Krumlov (Bömisch Krumau), Felix zu Schwarzenberg, a money order

statesman. Yet it was another Bohemian noble from Sedlčany (Seltschan), a veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Jan Josef Václav Radecký z Radče, Marshal Josef Radetzky, who was his military mentor.

They had met at the Battle of Saint Lucia, in Verona, on the previous May 6.

Despite these historical and personal references that should have tied him to Bohemia, he held an ambiguous and detached demeanor towards it. Bohemian aristocrats insisted in vain that the rights which he boasted found a fully-formed implementation; in April 1861 he received a delegation of the Bohemian Diet to whom he said he intended to be crowned in Prague. Franz Joseph actually never placed the Svatováclavská Koruna on himself, despite boasting of his rich panoply of titles including that of King of Bohemia.

austro-ungherese, varò la duplice monarchia, ignorando non solo le richieste, ma la stessa esistenza slava del suo impero: uno schiaffo ai cechi.

Così, quando giunse a Praga per l’apertura della Mostra del giubileo del 1891, la sua visita fu contrastata da manifestazioni anti-asburgiche e dalla diffusione di libelli contro Vienna e lo stesso imperatore. La reazione poliziesca non fu tenera e Jan Neruda non esitò a descriverla nei suoi Povídky Malostranské, i racconti di Malá Strana. I poliziotti raggiunsero il paradosso addirittura di rincorrere chi portava i copricapi tradi-

zionali cechi, visti come l’ostentazione della ribellione. Senza parlare della tribolata e gloriosa nascita del Sokol, la società ginnica irredentista che si sviluppò in modo massiccio.

Francesco Giuseppe venne soprannominato dai cechi Procházka, che significa letteralmente: camminata, passeggiata. Probabilmente l’epiteto risale al 1901, quando l’Imperatore giunse a Praga per inaugurare un ponte e su un giornale apparve una sua foto con la generica didascalia “Procházka na mostě”, “Passeggiata sul ponte”.

E quindi diventò il Procházka che non faceva molto per superare l’incomprensione di questi sudditi che stavano riscoprendo e consolidando la loro identità storica, giusto il minimo sindacale, come si dice, per evitare sgarbi: non mancò mai alle grandi manovre annuali dell’esercito quando si svolgevano in Boemia o in Moravia. Le sue visite ufficiali, i tagli di nastri, la storica visita alle officine Škoda, a Plzeň il 9 settembre 1905, accompagnato dal direttore generale Georg Günther, avevano il risalto di rito.

While the Minister of the Interior, Alexander von Bach, a Klerikalabsolutist, suggested the deportation from Prague to Salzburg, Franz Joseph ordered that the place of confinement had to be much further away, so that the patriot and scholar Havlíček Borovský ended up in distant Bressanone, without any court decision; Franz Joseph had decided personally.

The Havlíčék Borovský case (the writer described his sad deportation in Tyrolské elegie, The elegies of Tyrol, an ethical autobiography) weighed heavily on the future of relations between the enlightened and patriotic Czech world and Vienna.

The remaining Bohemian hopes were swept away in 1866, after the Austrian defeat at the Battle of Hradec Králové, that the Italians know as the Battle of Sadowa.

Despite being religious to the point of bigotry, Franz Joseph nurtured his su-

perstitions, directing his aversions to the places where militarily, things had gone wrong for him.

The following year, with the Österreichisch-Ungarischer Ausgleich, the Austro-Hungarian compromise, he launched the dual monarchy, ignoring not only the demands, but also the very existence of his Slavic empire: a major blow to the Czechs.

So when he came to Prague for the opening of the exhibition of the Jubilee of 1891, his visit was opposed by anti-Habsburg protests, and the spread of pamphlets

L’ostentata fedeltà delle autorità non corrispondeva certo al sentimento anti-austriaco dei cechi. Jaroslav Hašek, l’autore del Dobrý voják Švejk, il buon soldato Švejk, lo stralunato allevatore di cani dalle improbabili quanto fantasiose genealogie, raccontò che il suo eroe venne preso per idiota patentato quando esplose nel grido: “Viva l’imperatore Francesco Giuseppe!”. Sul cui ritratto sotto vetro attaccato alla parete della trattoria U Kalicha frequentata da Švejk le mosche depositavano le loro cacchette.

Il mito asburgico fondato sulla retorica della dinastia, della religione e del patriottismo, fra i cechi non attecchiva.

Nella incomprensione verso i sudditi della corona boema che mai volle sul capo, Francesco Giuseppe fu protagonista di una storia straordinariamente lunga e varia, ma vissuta con una normalità disarmante e monotona, come il suo Tafelspitz, il manzo bollito che mai doveva mancare in tavola. Successi e sconfitte militari, un tentativo

The police response was not tender, and Jan Neruda did not hesitate to describe it in his Povídky Malostranské, the tales of Malá Strana. The police even reached the paradox of chasing those who wore traditional Czech headdresses, seen as a display of rebellion. Not to mention the sorrowful and glorious birth of Sokol, the irredentist gymnastic society that developed on a massive scale.

Franz Joseph was nicknamed Procházka by the Czechs, which literally means: a walk, a stroll. The epithet probably dates back to 1901, when the Emperor arrived in Prague to inaugurate a bridge, and a picture of him appeared in a newspaper with the generic caption “Procházka na mostě”, “Walk over the bridge”.

He therefore became the Procházka who did not do much to overcome the lack of understanding of these subjects who were rediscovering and strengthening their historical identity, just the bare

minimum, as they say, to avoid rudeness: he was never missing from the big annual military operations when they took place in Bohemia or Moravia. His official visits, cutting of ribbons, the historical visit to the Škoda workshops, in Pilsen September 9, 1905, accompanied by the General Manager Georg Günther, prominently seemed like rituals.

The ostentatious loyalty of the authorities certainly did not correspond to the anti-Austrian sentiment of the Czechs. Jaroslav Hašek, the author of the Dobrý voják Švejk (The Good Soldier Švejk), the bewildered dog breeder from lineages as improbable as they were imaginative, wrote that his hero was taken as an utter idiot when he exploded into the cry: “Long live the emperor Franz Joseph!” Meanwhile, a portrait of the emperor was displayed under glass attached to the wall of the restaurant U Kalicha frequented by Švejk, on which flies would defecate.

and monotonous normality, like his Tafelspitz, the boiled beef that could never be missing from the table. Military successes and defeats, an assassination attempt (in 1853, when the buckle collar of his uniform deflected the blade of Hungarian János Libényi, who wanted to avenge his compatriots

hanged in Arad), the unhappy marriage with cousin Elizabeth of Bavaria, the popular uprisings, the mourning (the eldest daughter Sophia died of pneumonia in Budapest, his brother Maximilian was shot by a firing squad in Mexico, son Rudolf committed suicide at Mayerling, while his wife Elizabeth was murdered in Geneva by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni).

Then came the telephone, the electric light, cinema, the phonograph, the times were changing rapidly, but for the emperor this rapidly changing world only caused discomfort.

Yet the major blow for him arrived from Sarajevo, with the assassination of barely tolerated nephew Francis Ferdinand, and his wife Žofie Chotková, who was even more unpopular: her degrees of nobility were scarce, but above all she was Bohemian. This was followed, as we know, by the First World War. The Emperor was not convinced by that war, and he felt that his empire was old, no longer in step with the times.

Meanwhile from Paris, the concern was the activities of Tomáš Masaryk.

He was no stranger to Vienna, where he had been a Member of Parliament,

L’amante Katharina Schratt, la “cara, buona amica”, che dirigeva un convalescenziario per ufficiali feriti, non gli nascose che a Vienna si faceva la fame.

Il 21 ottobre del 1916,il primo ministro von Stürgkh venne assassinato a pistolettate da Friedrich Adler al grido: “Vogliamo la pace! Abbasso l’assolutismo!”.

L’anziano imperatore rimase profondamente turbato, mentre i problemi di salute stavano impensierendo la sua ormai ristretta cerchia. Il dott. Joseph von Kerzl, suo medico, diagnosticò la polmonite.

Francesco Giuseppe spirò con un colpo di tosse: erano le ore 21 e 05 di martedì 21 novembre 1916. Il cappellano erano riuscito appena a dare l’estrema unzione. and a lawyer of great depth in causes related to civil rights. Discussions focused on his dangerous work for the monarchy: he had set up an organization in Paris, the Czechoslovak National Council, which planned to create an independent state that would put together Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia: Czechoslovakia.

On 23 May, 1915 Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, in a difficult situation militarily, while socially and politically fragile. However, the Italian declaration of war, die treulose Italien, disloyal Italy, served to boost the pride of the empire.

But Francis Joseph was now in decline, and maybe he realized that the games on the chessboard of war had ended, and not in favour of the Central Powers.

His mistress Katharina Schratt, the “dear, good friend”,who ran a convalescent home for wounded officers, did not conceal the fact that in Vienna people were starving.

On 21 October 1916, the prime minister Von Stürgkh was shot dead by

A trainare l’imponente carro funebre furono otto cavalli neri Kladruby, razza ceca nata per servizi di corte, di cui dovevano esprimere la magnificenza nelle cerimonie ufficiali: fu l’ultimo omaggio di una Boemia che ormai pensava alla sua indipendenza.

Nella capitale era disponibile un solo battaglione di fanteria, che rese gli onori militari ed accompagnò il defunto sovrano.

Dopo la cerimonia religiosa, il corteo funebre aperto dal nuovo imperatore Carlo e dalla giovane imperatrice Zita prese la direzione della chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli che ospita la Cripta dei Cappuccini.

The old emperor was deeply troubled, and by then, his health problems were worrying his inner circle. Dr. Joseph von Kerzl, his doctor diagnosed him with pneumonia.

Franz Joseph died after a heavy cough: it was at the time of 21:05 on Tuesday, 21 November 1916. The chaplain had just managed to give the last rites.

Freezing days disturbed queues of those who came to pay homage to the remains of the old emperor in the Rittersaal of the Hofburg, where, however, he was not displayed due to badly handled embalming.

On 30 November, the bells of Vienna played simultaneously accompanying the funeral procession in St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The impressive hearse was towed by eight black Kladruby horses, a Czech-born race for court services, which were supposed to express magnificence in official ceremonies: it was the last gift of a Bohemia that by now was thinking about its independence.

Giuseppe, un povero peccatore che implora la misericordia di Dio”, trovò la comprensione del frate guardiano che fece spalancare il portone, consentendo che il feretro fosse collocato nella Cripta Imperiale, la Kaisergruft.

Il lungo regno di Francesco Giuseppe d’Asburgo-Lorena era proprio terminato.

Il 2 dicembre 1916 nella cappella dell’Hofburg fu recitato alla presenza del nuovo imperatore Carlo l’ultimo Requiem. Fosse stato vivo e presente, si sarebbe congedato come era consueto fare dopo ogni occasione formale cui partecipava: “Es war sehr schön, es hat mir sehrgefreut”, è stato molto bello, mi ha rallegrato molto.

of the crypt barred. Then he settled for specifying that it was about the emperor, without any result and with the same answer as before: “We do not know”. Once upon a time in a not too distant past, in the heart of Europe, there was a majestic castle overlooking a city with golden roofs. The large castle stood on a hill, along a placid river. After a long period of neglect, the castle became the residence of a learned and wise ruler who cared about the identity of his people and nation, which had become independent after centuries of foreign rule. Alongside this benevolent ruler, loved by his people, lived his highly cultured daughter named Alice.

In this city of golden roofs, there was a foreign architect who had lived there for almost ten years, having been exiled from his native country by necessity, and due to his origins also from the country in which he made his fortune.

Despite some moments of hardship, the city with golden roofs was offering a period of serenity to the taciturn architect who here was dedicating himself with extraordinary passion for teaching, earning the admiration of students and many colleagues.

and with his thoughts always turned towards his native land, he did not expect at all that this magical city would allow him to realize many of his youthful dreams, giving him great satisfaction. Once he received a good offer at home after twenty years of absence, the shy gentleman with a stern look, was about to leave the city with golden roofs and return home when the imponderable occurred. It was almost as a sign of gratitude, even though he

was a foreigner, that the industrious city entrusted their beloved castle to his care. The meeting with the wise ruler and his daughter Alice did the rest, by offering him the unexpected opportunity to send his name into history.

The diffident, hieratic looking architect found the interlocutors to be something he had never expected. Among the three, a deep intellectual understanding was born that transformed the view as in a solo piece dedicated to the art and identity of the people, materializing in the objective to turn the largest castle into the national symbol of freedom, independence and democracy.

Putting aside the fairy tale aspect and looking at history, it is not difficult to assign a name and age to these characters and scenarios. Of course, the

more astute readers here will have already made the necessary character exchanges themselves. The extraordinary early twentieth century story of the fruitful meeting between President Tomáš G. Masaryk, his daughter Alice and the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik possesses all the credentials to be told like a fairy tale. Nothing is missing: the stunning setting, exceptional characters, not to mention the twists. However, far from wanting this postmodern game to get out of hand, one must pick up again from the facts, while quickly retracing the stages of this curious story.

Of humble origins, the talented and shy Jože ​​Plečnik left Ljubljana late twenties to Vienna, entering almost immediately in the studio of the great Otto Wagner, with whom he worked

for a decade earning a notable degree of fame.

Among the many teachings from the master, he was struck by the idea that the architect had to regain what had been taken away from the power of engineers. Hence his consideration of even the smallest constituent of the human environment worthy of the love and attention of the architect, outlining a figure of multiform talent.

This was the guiding light that led him through his entire career and enabled the young Plečnik to become among the pioneers of the new approach to industrial design.

The growing aversion of the Slavs, but especially the harsh criticism leveled at his project for the Heiliggeistkirche in Vienna led him to leave the city, albeit reluctantly, in 1911.

Mettendo da parte la fiaba e guardando alla storia, non è difficile assegnare un nome ed un’epoca a questi perso-

naggi e questi scenari. Certamente, giunti sin qui i lettori più accorti avranno già fatto da sé le dovute sostituzioni. La straordinaria storia di inizio Novecento del fruttuoso incontro tra il presidente Tomáš G. Masaryk, sua figlia Alice e l’architetto sloveno Jože Plečnik ha tutte le carte in regola per essere narrata come una fiaba. Non manca proprio nulla: lo scenario da favola, gli eccezionali personaggi, senza menzionare i colpi di scena. Tuttavia, lungi dal volersi far sfuggire di mano questo gioco postmoderno si ripartirà dai fatti, ripercorrendo velocemente le tappe di questa curiosa storia.

Di umili origini, il talentuoso e schivo Jože Plečnik lasciò Lubiana poco meno che trentenne alla volta di Vienna, entrando quasi immediatamente nell’atelier del grande Otto Wagner, presso il quale lavorò per un decennio conquistando una certa fama.

La crescente avversione nei confronti degli slavi, ma soprattutto le dure critiche mosse nei confronti del suo progetto per la Heiliggeistkirche a Vienna lo indussero a lasciare la città, seppur a malincuore, nel 1911.

Plečnik intraprese a Praga la sua carriera di insegnante applicandovisi con meticolosa dedizione, come si evince dai carteggi con gli allievi, senza ricevere alcuna commessa per un decennio.

L’anno 1920 fu per Plečnik un anno tormentato, poiché temeva di andare incontro alla propria “morte artistica” per aver accettato un incarico da docente al Politecnico di Lubiana. Tuttavia, nel novembre dello stesso anno, dopo alcuni suoi rifiuti, fu nominato Architetto del Castello dal presidente Masaryk.

Dalle biografie Plečnik emerge quale personaggio portato all’isolamento,

pronto ad accogliere come cliente solo chi sapeva dimostrargli di riporre in lui piena fiducia. Scelti quasi per affinità elettiva, costoro erano ripagati dall’avere a completa disposizione il suo talento ed il suo sapere pronti ad applicarsi al progetto con devota passione. Ciò avvenne nella sua forma più perfetta nell’intesa che ebbe con il presidente Masaryk ed Alice, fondata su comuni ideali ed intenti.

Gli Asburgo avevano lasciato il castello in una situazione di abbandono e l’incarico di riportarlo al lustro confacente ad un monumento nazionale prospettava a Plečnik una gigantesca mole di lavoro comprendente i temi più disparati: dagli interni ai giardini, dal restauro al progetto di nuovi monumenti, fino alla sistemazione degli scavi archeologici. Si narrano molti aneddoti sulla realizzazione di queste opere, ognuna delle quali era per Plečnik come la singola pennellata di un

Plečnik undertook his teaching career in Prague by applying himself with meticulous dedication, as was evident from the correspondence with students, but without receiving any commission for a decade.

The year 1920 was a turbulent year for Plečnik, because he was afraid of heading towards his “artistic death” for having accepted an appointment as professor at the Polytechnical University of Ljubljana. However, in November that year, after several rejections, he was appointed architect of the Castle

by President Masaryk.

From Plečnik biographies, a character emerges of a man led to isolation, only ready to welcome you as a customer if you were able to display full confidence in him. Chosen almost due to elective affinity, they were rewarded by having his talent and knowledge at their disposal, which he was ready to apply

to the project with devout passion.

This happened in its most perfect form on the understanding he had with President Masaryk and Alice, based on shared ideals and intentions.

The Habsburgs had left the castle in a situation of abandonment, and the task of bringing it back to the luster worthy of a national monument presented Plečnik with an enormous amount of work which included the most diverse subjects: from the interior to the gardens, from the restoration project of new monuments, to the arrangement of the archaeological excavations. Many anecdotes have been told about the creation of these works, each of which for Plečnik was like the single brush stroke of a large fresco, but also cause for concern.

Without scratching the strength of the tradition that the entire complex contains in itself, Hradčany was progressively shaped by Plečnik with skilful personal and recognizable “touches”, without ever sticking to a precise program or theory.

Sovente si legge che attraverso il lavoro al castello Plečnik intendeva gettare le basi per un nuovo stile, ma ai

suoi occhi ed a quelli di Tomáš e Alice Masaryk il castello stava al contempo acquisendo il valore di primo passo verso un’espressione artistica panslava – al centro quindi di una precisa prospettiva politica.

Grazie ai consigli di Alice ed al presidente che lo difendeva dagli attacchi dell’opinione pubblica, Plečnik curava con minuzia ogni particolare. La giustapposizione di elementi nuovi in dialogo con le preesisten-

ze ha il preciso intento di conferire all’insieme quella monumentalità che avrebbe dovuto tendere un filo conduttore tra gli ideali del nuovo stato democratico e l’antica democrazia greca.

La lungimiranza di Masaryk aveva spinto Plečnik a sviluppare un imponente piano urbanistico per collegare il castello alla parte settentrionale della città, ma l’opinione pubblica criticò duramente questa proposta.

Plečnik sentitosi sotto attacco decise di lasciare Praga nonostante gli sforzi dell’anziano Masaryk per trattenerlo; era il 1934.

Un anno più tardi l’ormai ottantacinquenne Masaryk rassegnò le sue dimissioni. Sinceramente scosso da questa scelta e privato della protezione del suo “mecenate” Plečnik abbandonò l’incarico, lasciando il magnificente Hradčany nelle mani di Pavel Janák.

The foresight of Masaryk had pushed Plečnik to develop an impressive city plan which would link the castle to the northern part of the city, but public opinion strongly criticized the proposal.

Plečnik, feeling under attack, decided to

leave Prague despite the elder Masaryk’s efforts to keep him; it was 1934.

A year later, the now eighty-year-old Masaryk resigned. Genuinely shocked by this choice and deprived of the security of his “patron” Plečnik abandoned his role, leaving the magnificent Hradčany in the hands of Pavel Janák.

Often we read that through the work on the castle Plečnik intended to lay the foundations for a new style, but in his eyes and in those of Alice and Tomáš Masaryk, the castle was simultaneously acquiring the value of a first step towards a Pan-Slavic artistic expression – thus to the centre of a clear political perspective.

Thanks to Alice’s advice and the President who defended him from public attacks, Plečnik worked in minute detail. The juxtaposition of new elements with pre-existing structures had the specific intent to give the unit the monumentality that was supposed to tighten a common thread between the

TRIFOT, THE LATEST PROVOCATION FROM DAVID ČERNÝ David Černý, il più noto e controverso artista della scena ceca, torna a stupire. Questa volta lo fa con una statua alta dodici metri e le sembianze di un gigantesco automa con molteplici occhi, installata a Praga, nel quartiere periferico di Stodůlky, in una strada pedonale, la Petržílkova.

Il nome dell’opera è Trifot e qualcuno l’ha già definita “un mostro orwelliano, un inquietante Big Brother”. Coi suoi tanti occhi – bulbi enormi e in costante movimento che spuntano da obiettivi di vecchie macchine fotografiche – Trifot segue a caso i passanti, la cui immagine viene proiettata in grandi monitor collocati tutt’intorno.

“È vero, il tema è un po’ orwelliano, ma vuole essere anche un mio omaggio all’arte della fotografia, di cui sono un grande appassionato” ha dichiarato Černý, 49 anni, artista non nuovo a questo tipo di provocazioni.

Sono trascorsi ormai 25 anni da quando, nella Praga post-Rivoluzione di velluto e appena liberatasi dal regime comunista, il giovanissimo David dipinge di rosa un carro armato sovietico, monumento della Seconda guerra mondiale ma anche simbolo dei tanti anni di dittatura comunista.

David Černý, the most famous and controversial artist of the Czech art scene, has amazed us again. This time he has done so with a twelve metre high statue with the appearance of a giant multi-eyed robot, installed in Prague, in the suburb of Stodůlky, on Petržílkova pedestrian street.

The name of the work is Trifot and someone has already defined as “an Orwellian monster, a disturbing Big Brother”. With its many eyes, huge constantly moving bulbs that observe from the lenses of old cameras, Trifot follows random passersby, whose image is projected on large monitors placed all around it.

“It’s true, the theme is a little Orwellian, but I also want it to be my tribute to the art of photography, of which I am a big fan”, said the forty-nine-year old Černý, an artist not new to this kind of provocation.

By now 25 years have passed since when during the aftermath of the Velvet Revolution and having been freed from the communist regime, young David painted a Soviet tank pink, which had been a monument of World War II, but also a symbol of the many years of communist dictatorship.

Černý caused a stir again in 2013, when he placed a ten meters high middle finger on a barge anchored on the Vltava, directed to the Prague Castle to which it was facing, an unmistakable sign of protest against the deterioration of national politics.

The most sacrilegious contemporary Czech artist has had an exhibition dedicated to his work by the DSC Gallery in Prague called Black Hole, with a presentation of his most recent works, some of which were previously unseen. (Gus)

A Praga la prima de “La clemenza di Tito” In Prague, “The clemency of Titus” première 225 ANNI FA 225 YEARS AGO

Era la sera del 6 settembre 1791, e a Praga si festeggiava l’incoronazione di Leopoldo II a re di Boemia. In tale occasione, presso la sede del Teatro degli Stati (Stavovské divadlo), si tenne la prima rappresentazione de “La clemenza di Tito”, opera in due atti di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, classificata come K 621 del Catalogo Köchel. L’opera costituisce l’ultimo lavoro teatrale del genio austriaco e fu musicata su libretto di Caterino Mazzolà, a sua volta basato su un melodramma del 1734 di Pietro Metastasio. La regia della rappresentazione fu affidata a Domenico Guardasoni, impresario del Teatro praghese, ma nonostante l’attesa la risposta del pubblico fu piuttosto fredda. Pare che la stessa moglie di Leopoldo, Maria Luisa di Borbone, criticò fortemente l’opera che, in effetti, si distaccava molto dallo scritto originale del Metastasio che la compose, nel 1734, in occasione dell’onomastico dell‘imperatore Carlo VI e che riscosse un enorme successo. La trama racconta la storia dell’Imperatore romano Tito che, scoprendo i traditori di una congiura, con un atto di clemenza inaspettato li perdona.

It was the evening of September 6, 1791, and in Prague, they were celebrating the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. On that occasion, at the Estates Theatre (Stavovské divadlo),the first performance of “The clemency of Titus” was staged, an opera in two Acts

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, classified as K 621 in the Köchel catalogue. It was the last theatrical work of the Austrian genius and was set to music in a libretto

by Caterino Mazzolà, and that in turn, was based on a 1734 opera by Pietro Metastasio. The direction of the performance was entrusted to Domenico Guardasoni, impresario of the Prague theatre, but despite expectations, public response was rather cold. It seems that the even Leopold’s wife, Maria Luisa of Bourbon, also strongly opposed the work, which was in fact, somewhat removed from Metastasio’s original written work, composed in 1734, for the name day anniversary of Emperor Charles VI and which was a great success. The plot tells the story of the Roman Emperor Titus who, after exposing the traitors of a conspiracy, and as an act of clemency, unexpectedly decides to forgive them.

Ferdinando Carlo Leopoldo Giuseppe Francesco Marcellino d’Asburgo-Lorena (1793 –1875), fu imperatore d‘Austria e re d’Ungheria dal 1835 al 1848 con il nome di Ferdinando V, e il 7 settembre 1836 ricevette anche la corona di Boemia a Praga. Figlio di Francesco I d’Austria e di Maria Teresa di Borbone, il giovane Ferdinando ebbe presto problemi di salute che non gli permisero di acquisire un’educazione appropriata a quelli che sarebbero stati i suoi incarichi futuri. A causa delle sue condizioni fisiche e del suo carattere, Ferdinando venne escluso dal prendere decisioni importanti nonostante fosse membro del Consiglio di stato fin dal 1829, e anche in occasione della sua incoronazione non mancarono forti polemiche. Nel 1848, l’anno delle rivoluzioni e della insurrezione di Vienna, con le dimissioni di Metternich dalla carica di primo ministro dell’Impero, anche Ferdinando decise di abdicare in favore del nipote Francesco Giuseppe. Trascorse il resto della sua vita nel Castello di Praga, con frequenti soggiorni anche nelle residenze di Ploskovice e Zákupy in Boemia. Morì nel 1875.

Ferdinand Charles Leopold Joseph Francis Marcelin of Habsburg-Lorraine (1793 – 1875), was emperor of Austria and king of Hungary from 1835 to 1848 under the name of Ferdinand V, and in Prague on September 7, 1836 also received the crown of Bohemia. Son of Francis I of Austria and Maria Theresa of Bourbon, the young Ferdinand was soon affected by health issues, that prevented him from acquiring a proper education that would have enabled him to deal with his future assignments. Because of his physical condition and character, however, Ferdinand was excluded from important decisions, even if he was a member of the State Council and had been so since 1829. His coronation also caused much controversy. In 1848, the year of the revolutions, the Vienna insurrection and resignation of Metternich from the post of Prime Minister of the Empire, Ferdinand decided to abdicate in favour of his nephew Franz Joseph. He then spent the rest of his life at the Prague Castle, with frequent stays at the Ploskovice and Zákupy residences in Bohemia.

He died in 1875.

Fondato il 28 settembre del 1931, il Giardino Zoologico di Praga, secondo un’indagine del 2015, è considerato il quarto giardino zoologico migliore del mondo.

Lo zoo praghese è la seconda attrazione turistica della Repubblica Ceca per numero annuo di visitatori, seconda soltanto al Castello di Praga ed è attualmente diviso in 12 padiglioni dove è possibile ammirare numerose specie di animali provenienti dai cinque continenti. L’idea di creare un giardino zoologico a Praga risale al 1881, quando il conte Sweerts-Spork pubblicò una lettera aperta su un giornale del tempo promuovendo l’idea. Nel 1891 fu costituito un comitato per la realizzazione del progetto e, nel 1922, l’industriale Alois Svoboda donò un terreno situato nella zona di Troja perché servisse alla costruzione degli edifici necessari. Founded on September 28, 1931, the Zoological Garden in Prague, according to a 2015 survey, is considered the fourth best zoo in the world. The Prague zoo is the second most famous tourist attraction in the Czech Republic for the number of visitors per year, second only to the Prague Castle and is currently divided into 12 pavilions, where visitors can see various species of animals from the five continents. The idea of creating a zoological garden in Prague dates to 1881, when Count Sweerts-Spork published an open letter in a newspaper of the time, to promote the idea. In 1891, a committee was set up for the project, and in 1922, the industrialist, Alois Svoboda donated a piece of land in the area of Troja for the construction of the necessary buildings. In the years that followed, the first animals were introduced, many of which, donated by circuses, and the preparation work continued at a fast pace until September 28, 1931 when, although not yet completed, the Prague Zoological garden was opened to the public.

Nato a Praga il 5 ottobre del 1936, Václav Havel è stato, per il popolo ceco, l’uomo simbolo della libertà ritrovata dopo gli anni del regime. Ultimo presidente della Cecoslovacchia e primo presidente della Repubblica Ceca, Havel è stato anche un artista, scrittore, drammaturgo e poeta le cui opere sono molto apprezzate e rappresentate non solo sul territorio nazionale. Dopo gli avvenimenti del 1968, al giovane Václav fu impedito di fare teatro e questi iniziò la sua attività politica che vide la pubblicazione del famoso manifesto di dissenso e opposizione al socialismo reale: “Charta 77” per il quale venne incriminato e incarcerato per 5 anni. Teorico del “Post-totalitarismo” e sostenitore della non violenza, Havel è stato il leader indiscusso della Rivoluzione di Velluto del 1989, sempre contrario alla divisione della Cecoslovacchia in due nazioni distinte. Nel corso della sua attività politica sostenne sempre posizioni filo occidentali e fu fautore dell’entrata della Repubblica Ceca nella Nato e nella Ue. È morto il 18 dicembre del 2011.

Born in Prague on October 5, 1936, Václav Havel is, for the Czech population, the symbol of a regained freedom after the years of the regime.

The last president of Czechoslovakia and first president of the Czech Republic, Havel was also an artist, writer, playwright and poet, whose work is greatly appreciated in this Country as well as abroad. After the events of 1968, the young Václav was banned from doing theatrical work, so he started his political activity, which led to the publication of the famous manifesto of dissent and opposition to Real Socialism: “Charter 77”, for which he was indicted and jailed for five years. A theoretician of “Post-totalitarianism” and advocate of non-violence, Havel was the undisputed leader of the Velvet Revolution of 1989, steadfast in his opposition to the division of Czechoslovakia into two separate nations. Throughout the course of his political activityhe supported Pro-Western positions and actively promoted the Czech Republic’s entry into NATO and the EU. He died on December 18, 2011.

Pat Butcher è un giornalista sportivo britannico, produttore televisivo, scrittore e commentatore esperto di atletica e di corsa in particolare, con alle spalle oltre 30 anni di esperienza. La sua ultima fatica letteraria è il libro, composto da 64 brevi saggi, “Quicksilver: The Mercurial Emil Zátopek” che racconta la storia dell’atleta cecoslovacco leggenda del mezzofondo e della maratona. Butcher conobbe personalmente Zátopek e, per scrivere questa nuova biografia sull’atleta, ha passato molto tempo in Cechia incontrando persone che furono vicine al campione in vari momenti della sua vita, soprattutto la moglie Dana. La presentazione del libro si è tenuta presso la sede praghese del RunCzech e, in tale occasione, l’autore e Carlo Capalbo, ideatore della Maratona di Praga, si sono recati insieme dalla vedova novantaquattrenne di Zátopek, ex campionessa olimpica nel lancio del giavellotto, temporaneamente in ospedale a causa di una frattura, per regalarle una copia del libro.

Pat Butcher is a British sports journalist, television producer, writer and an expert athletics commentator, particularly running, with over 30 years of experience.

His latest literary work is a book consisting of 64 short essays, „Quicksilver: The Mercurial Emil Zátopek“, which tells the story of the Czechoslovakian athlete, the middle-distance and marathon legend. Butcher knew Zátopek personally, and in order to write this new biography on the athlete, he spent a long time in Czech Republic to meet those who were closest to the champion during his lifetime, in particular, his wife Dana. The presentation of the book took place at the Prague RunCzech centre and, on that occasion, both the author and Carlo Capalbo – creator of the Prague Marathon – took the opportunity to visit the ninety-four year-old widow of Zátopek, the former Olympic champion javelin thrower, who was temporarily in hospital because of a fracture, in order to give her a copy of the book.

Timm Rautert è un fotografo tedesco, classe 1941, ed ex docente presso l’Accademia di Arti Visive dell’Università di Lipsia, con alle spalle molte mostre internazionali e progetti fotografici. Rautert incontrò il famoso fotografo cecoslovacco, Josef Sudek, nella primavera del 1967, nel corso di un soggiorno di studi nella capitale ceca. Il giovane studente tedesco e il famoso fotografo 71enne, uomo di indole docile e stile di vita modesto, strinsero da subito un rapporto di amicizia che permise a Rautert di fotografare l’artista nel suo studio, in momenti di vita privata e di accompagnarlo spesso nelle sue passeggiate praghesi in cerca di ispirazione e soggetti. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 2008, e adesso arricchito e riedito, il libro di Rautert vuole essere una cronaca della personalità affascinante del fotografo e dei luoghi nel periodo immediatamente precedente la “Primavera di Praga”. Il libro contiene 42 fotografie in bianco e nero, e un saggio dell’autore.

Timm Rautert is a German photographer, born in 1941, and former professor at the Academy of Visual Arts at the University of Leipzig, with many international exhibitions and photo projects to his credit. Rautert met the famous Czechoslovakian photographer Josef Sudek, in the spring of 1967, during a study period in the Czech capital. The young German student and the famous 71 year-old photographer, a gentle-natured man with a modest lifestyle, soon became friends. This gave Rautert the opportunity to photograph the artist in his studio, during various moments of his private lifeandoften accompanied him during his walks around Prague, in search of inspiration and subjects. Published for the first time in 2008, and now enriched in a new edition, Rautert’s book wishes to be a chronicle on the fascinating personality of the photographer, as well as ofthe places of the period just before the „Prague Spring“. The book contains 42 black and white photographs and an essay by the author.

“It was 1995. I had opened my company in Prague a few years before, and for some time, I had taken up buying artistic objects and antiques: I started with postcards and then went on to paintings”. It was in a second-hand dealershop in Prague, oppressed for decades by communism, that the Ferrarini-Nicoli collection story began, in an antik cellar in Korunní street. Vit-

torio Ferrarini recalls: “As I often did then, one day I went out searching for a few art objects to buy. My painstaking research led me straight into the basement of an antiques dealer who, reluctantly and almost with a certain amount of contempt, started dusting a large 1937 canvas right in front of my eyes: a painting signed by the artist Josef Štolovský, that depicted the

interior of a foundry. I had never seen anything like it before, and it struck me as a revelation”. Štolovský’s painting is a glimpse into the “inflamed bowels” of a Czechoslovak factory: the workers, as moving shadows, are standing around and in front of the machines and furnaces that emerge from the dark background. The painting is as incandescent as the molten

Avevo aperto l’azienda a Praga da un paio d’anni e da qualche tempo mi interessavo all’acquisto di oggetti d’arte e d’antiquariato: ho iniziato con le cartoline e le cornici, poi sono arrivate le tele”. È nei robivecchi di una Praga ancora sfinita da decenni di comunismo che comincia la storia della collezione Ferrarini-Nicoli: nello scantinato di un antik sulla via Korunní. Racconta Vittorio Ferrarini: “Un giorno, come mi succedeva spesso allora, ero a caccia d’oggetti d’arte da acquistare. La mia ricerca attenta mi ha portato dritto nel sottoscala di un antiquario che, malvolentieri, e quasi con disprezzo, mi ha spolverato davanti agli occhi una grande tela del 1937: un’opera firmata del pittore Josef Štolovský che raffigurava l’interno di una fonderia. Non avevo mai visto qualcosa del genere, fu come un’illuminazione”. Il quadro di Štolovský è uno squarcio nel ventre infiammato

È quest’immagine magmatica, di industria pesante, che inaugura la collezione FerrariniNicoli, un insieme unico di opere d’arte che, ventun anni dopo, conta 150 dipinti, 40 sculture e 50 manifesti. Il tema è unico: il lavoro. Dalla fabbrica ai campi, passando per le miniere, tutti gli artisti testimoniano della durezza e della nobiltà di questa attività umana. Diverse opere di questa collezione sono state dipinte durante il cosiddetto “Realismo Socialista”, tra il 1948 e il 1958, ma che artisticamente durò fino alla fine degli anni ‘70. It is this magmatic image of a heavy industry that inaugurates the Ferrarini-Nicoli collection, a unique set of works of art, that twenty years later, consist of 150 paintings, 40 sculptures and 50 posters. Everything had to appear as a celebration of the worker: the factory worker, the farmer and the miner are

all archetypes, “workers” that are useful in representing a new efficient and Sovietized society. The Ferrarini-Nicoli collection prevented a good number of these works from being lost. Vittorio Ferrarini recalls: „Many of these types of artistic works, paintings, sculptures and posters were destroyed by the population after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and during the subsequent departure of the Russians from Czechoslovak territory. It was a spontaneous reaction, a sort of desire to do away with a long and sad period of their lives. Years spent under a regime and dictatorship.

Tutto doveva passare per una celebrazione del lavoratore: l’operaio, il con-

tadino, il minatore, sono tutti gli archetipi, “operai” utili a rappresentare una società nuova, sovietizzata e efficiente. La collezione Ferrarini-Nicoli ha permesso che un buon numero di queste opere non andassero disperse.

Ricorda Vittorio Ferrarini: „Moltissime opere di questo genere, quadri, scul-

ture, manifesti, furono distrutti dalla popolazione dopo la caduta del muro di Berlino e il conseguente abbandono dei russi dal territorio cecoslovacco. Fu una reazione naturale come a volere cancellare un lungo, triste periodo della loro vita. Anni di regime e dittatura. Chi era in Cecoslovacchia

Anche per questo motivo il collezionista non nasconde la fierezza di fronte alle opere riportate alla luce nel corso degli anni. Consapevole di avere preservato uno spaccato di storia contemporanea cecoslovacca, Ferrarini resta lucido sulla dolorosa realtà storica che ha prodotto quest’arte, “forse ancora troppo dolorosa e vicina per chi l’ha vissuta personalmente”. Come Oldřich Lomecký, sindaco della municipalità di Praga 1, che alla parola arte preferisce l’espressione “perversione artistica” e ricorda come in patria l’arte del Realismo Socialista veniva apostrofata con disprezzo “sorela” o “socrel”, dalle iniziali delle parole ceche socialistický realismus. Dietro l’utopia di queste opere si cela una realtà ben diversa: fatta di privazioni e mancanza di libertà. Tuttavia lo stesso Lomecký riconosce il merito di questa importante collezione: essere memoria storica, monito piuttosto, perché questo periodo della storia as “sorela” or “socrel”, the initials to the Czech words socialistický realismus.

Behind the utopia of these works lies a very different reality: made of deprivation and lack of freedom. However, Lomecký acknowledges the merit of this important collection: a historical memory, or rather a sort of warning to make sure this contemporary period of Czechoslovak history does not repeat itself a second time.

Political considerations aside, it should be remembered that not all of these paintings and sculptures belong to the communist era and that they speak primarily of man’s toil in rural and industrialized cities. In the stone quarries by Jaromír Schoř, the characters seem carved in the material they are working on: their bodies are broken lines that identify them to the extraction material, which they move with great effort. This theme is also closely bound to the biography of Vittorio Ferrarini, who from the beginning, searched for and bought „almost obsessively“ paintings depicting the subject of labour. „I have always painted it. I have always painted farm landscapes and the land.

My parents were farmers, and until my graduation, I used to work on the fields. I shared with them the hard work of the fields and this feeling must have had a strong influence on me – and that is why I went on to collect these works of art“.

What is sure is that this art and this collection has, over the years, gone beyond the horizons of a personal quest and have become an established
