The Meta - WHAT? The Metaverse and digital twins are hot topics for many while others don’t know or couldn’t care less what it is. The real question that needs to be addressed is: “how will technological advances impact our society?” To begin with, technology has surpassed the wildest imagination of any science-fiction tale. We are living in a science-fiction world.
Over the last decade, the US Military has utilized the Metaverse with AR helmets, VR environments, and 3D simulations. There is a significant difference, however, in a Military vs. a Commercial Metaverse; one is an open world that anyone can join (for a fee of course) and the other is a closed system for the Military.
A basic definition is a metaverse is the general connection between the digital world and the physical world—augmented reality, virtual real estate, virtual concerts, etc. Digital twins are simply building blocks of the metaverse. They act as a real-time digital copy of a physical object.
