rosse Ile native, Dr. Mark Sawka brings the latest technologies to his patients while recalling a golden age when doctors treated families for generations. He remarks, “I have patients who I’ve cared for since infancy, and now I’m caring for their children. That is a real compliment.” Dr. Sawka has been in practice for over 30 years, although medicine wasn’t his original plan. One summer during college, Dr. Sawka, who was studying pre-dentistry at the time, attended an air show with his brother on a hot Sunday afternoon. The extreme heat, combined with long-standing lines created a medical emergency where a gentleman fainted. The man’s head wound was bleeding profusely, so Dr. Sawka used his own shirt to staunch the blood until paramedics arrived. Having enjoyed taking control of the situation, but wishing he could have done more, Dr. Sawka’s brother, a dentist himself, encouraged him to consider medical school. He dove right in, volunteering that summer at Riverside Hospital in their emergency room. Going directly into the ER was a bold move, but Dr. Sawka enjoyed the challenge and knew it would help him determine if saving lives was his calling. “I really liked it a lot; in fact, I would spend my weekends there working as a volunteer just because I liked being around medicine so much,” says Dr. Sawka, who earned over 1,000 volunteer hours learning everything from X-rays

to putting in stitches. In regards to being around trauma, Dr. Sawka says, “I just felt like I was helping people.” Dr. Sawka went on to attend Ross University School of Medicine in the Caribbean, complete an internship in Internal Medicine at West Suburban Medical Center in Illinois; do locum tenens in California, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Alaska and the Upper Peninsula; and finish residency at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing where he was chief resident. Next, Dr. Sawka taught at Michigan State University’s residency program and received a research fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery from Boston University Medical Center. After obtaining this wealth of experience and traveling far and wide, Dr. Sawka decided to TOP DOC bring his talents back Dr. Mark Sawka is currently to Michigan. He puraccepting new patients. handle, and what I can’t, I refer to people I’d send my own family too.” And like family, Dr. Sawka is available when he’s needed because he reserves a third of his schedule for same-day appointments and encourages calls for questions. “We don’t mind answering questions over the phone, and if we can’t answer over the phone, we’ll have you come in,” says Dr. Sawka. “I think it’s important they see their physician when they’re well, and not just when they’re sick. We make it a priority that they can come in when they need to.” Outside of his practice, Dr. Sawka enjoys rowing competitively, fishing, and hunting and has been affiliated with Ducks Unlimited for about 25 years. As often as possible, Dr. Sawka volunteers his services. During a recent trip to Africa, he served as a physician for two weeks alongside a mission trip dedicating wells. He volunteers at local clinics for uninsured patients and shares his knowledge with residency students that come to learn in his office. In response to his patient’s desire for cosmetic treatments, Dr. Sawka is offering new services. The PicoSure laser, perfect for removing tattoos, scars, freckles,

and wrinkles as well as tightening the skin, and the SculpSure laser, for removing those troublesome pockets of fat in problem areas like the tummy and chin. “It’s a real paradigm shift for me,” says Dr. Sawka. “I think of medicine as saving lives and helping people live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. And this doesn’t do any of those things. But it does make people happy, and that’s important because if people are more comfortable with their body, they are happier with their body, and I like that.” Patients love PicoSure as it’s less painful than the alternative treatments for tattoo removal. According to Dr. Sawka, this laser pulses a trillion times a second, resonating so fast that the ink bursts and is reabsorbed into the body then eliminated through the urine. And his office is one of the only to offer the advanced resurfacing laser within a twohour distance. Many claim it is even less uncomfortable than getting a tattoo in the first place. “Tattoo artists like it because it gives them a nice blank slate versus having to try and cover unwanted tattoos,” says Dr. Sawka. Two to three visits are sufficient for tattoo removal. For patients who need a little extra help getting rid of stubborn fat, the SculpSure laser can help. With only two or three treatments, which can be done on a lunch break, patients can see a significant reduction of those problem areas. Safer than liposuction with almost no risk, Dr. Sawka says this service is only slightly uncomfortable but not painful.

JOURNAL Dog/Cat - Brother/Sister enjoy summer and look forward to the upcoming cooler weather Well, well, well. Didn’t those dog days of summer come and go so quickly. With the hot summer days it was essential to stay cool with a refreshing yogurt. Chillin’ on my big marble floor was also a necessity to maintain the quality of my comfort zone. But I do enjoy the times while stinky cat and I are sunning ourselves, though stinky cat does need her sunscreen. While speaking of stinky cat, Menka the Sphynx, Dad and I caught her fishing in the pond. While she can’t catch any of the birdies, fishing was her next best thing. I asked Dad if I could give her one loud bark, so she’d be swimming with the fishies, but Dad said “No”. After no birdies or fish, she decided to just chase the butterflies.

Dad and I attended Bark on Biddle in Wyandotte. We had our photo taken and placed in a major newspaper. Gigi goes global. After some serious shopping I scored a new rainbow collar with a matching leash, of course! And we couldn’t make up our minds about purchasing new kibble bowls so we bought both. # islandgirl While we roll into the fall/winter season, stinky cat and I with be pulling out the big blankets and comforters. I’ll be doing my best trying to keep off that winter weight while looking forward to the Halloween treats and the Holiday Season. As always, big wet kisses!
