Key Concepts Explained

Before deciding what frame size and style will fit you best, it is important to understand some key concepts that will help you make an informed decision.

A picture frame is made of different components such as the glass, the frame, an optional mat board and of course the photograph or image that you are framing. Each component has different measurements and is important to understand what to look for in order to find a picture frame that perfectly suits both your photograph and your space.

PHOTO SIZE

The photo size or image size refers to the dimensions of the actual artwork or photograph that is intended to be displayed within the frame.

When the frame includes a matboard, the photo size is usually 0.5-1.0cm bigger than the cut-out window. When the frame doesn’t include a matboard, the photo size is the same as the glass size.

FRAME SIZE

The frame size refers to the dimensions of the glass inside the frame. This is a maximum artwork size that could be displayed inside the frame. It is more accurate to measure this from the back of the frame, between the inside edges of the frame.

WINDOW SIZE

The window size is used when the frame includes a matboard. This refers to the dimensions of the cut-out window. Because the photograph is placed behind the matboard, usually the cut-out window is approx. 0.5-1.0cm smaller than the photo size.

EXTERNAL SIZE

The external size of the frame is the outer dimensions of the frame. This varies depending on the width of the moulding.
