One in ten UAE consumers spend AED60K a year on beauty

O

ne in ten consumers in the UAE now spend a massive AED60,000 (US$16,000) a year on cosmetics as social pressure to look good and a strong shopping culture continue to drive sales in the sector.

In fact, many residents spend as much each year on cosmetics as they do on rent or a car, according to a new report by DMG Events, which surveyed

496 UAE men and women.

This growth in spending can also be attributed to increased personal incomes, an influx of tourists to the region and a growing trend of men widening the range of cosmetic products they use, according to the report.

Prospects for the beauty industry in the Middle East and North Africa vary considerably between the countries, with the sector most buoyant in affluent United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, according to new data from Euromonitor International.

suggest the UAE’s real gross domestic product (GDP) will expand by more than 3% a year until 2018. The IMF forecasted real GDP growth at 3.6% in 2013, 3.7% in 2014 and 3.8% in 2015, far above the 2.6% growth recorded in 2011. Growth is expected to come from both oil and non-oil sectors, though the latter is now growing faster, according to the IMF.

Sales of beauty and personal care products in Saudi Arabia are forecast to rise by 6% by 2017, driven by a growing focus on fashion and celebrities as a result of increased access to the internet. In the UAE, sales of premium cosmetics were expected to be up 6.7% by the end of 2013, totalling AED4million (US$1.1m).

The findings were revealed in Euromonitor’s e-book Beauty Industry Trends in the Middle East and North Africa.

The research also predicts that consumer demand will remain comparatively weak in Egypt, in the wake of the unstable financial and political situation in the country following the 2011 revolution.

Mounting pressure to look good is driving the beauty and personal care sector in Morocco, where increased market segmentation – including into areas such as anti-ageing, teen skin and men’s skincare – is a key trend. While still relatively nascent, the Iranian beauty industry is also seeing growth. A higher awareness of beauty and personal care products among the younger population in particular is pinpointed as an important driver.

Two spas from the United Arab Emirates scooped top accolades at the World Spa and Wellness Awards 2014.

ShiQui Spa and Fitness at Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai and The Banyan Tree Spa Al Wadi in Ras Al Khaimah both celebrated wins at a glitzy awards ceremony held in London’s Guildhall on February 23.

The awards, organised by Professional Beauty, were launched in 2012 to celebrate spa excellence around the globe and raise industry standards.

ShiQui came first in the Hotel Spa of The Year: Middle East category and The Banyan Tree in the Destination Spa of The Year: Middle East and Africa category.

Both spas were visited by two judges – an official judge and mystery shopper – and were scrutinised, by a further eight judges, on a variety of criteria from customer service to treatment performance.

Nail Spa unveils new brand identity UAE-based salon chain The Nail Spa has been relaunched with new treatments, products and a whole new brand identity.

Since launching in 2002, The Nail Spa has undergone a steady and successful transformation to become a full service brand, with extensive treatment options ranging from classic nail care and waxing, through to threading and eyebrow tinting, facials and body massages.

Commenting on the new brand identity, Shabana Karim, founder and managing director of The Nail Spa, said: “Since opening our first location in Dubai in 2002 we’ve witnessed immense demand across the Emirates.

and has allowed us to create a new visual representation of the brand and is aligned to the values we hold as a company today.”

The refreshed look is currently being rolled out across the brand’s portfolio. It’s latest in Emirates Hills, The Lakes offers the full range of treatments from the new, luxurious menu including the DDG Instant Glow, a ‘facial in a flash’ from celebrity skin expert, Dr Dennis Gross. Other treatments include the Hot ‘N’ Cold Hydrotherapy, Minty Chocolate Sole Scrub, and Lavender Heel Peel.

The Nail Spa currently employs more than 300 therapists across nine venues in the UAE. It was recently ranked number 35 of Dubai’s 100 top performing

Red tape cut for spa developments in Dubai

Middle East set to lead world wellness tourism

Dubai has made spa hotel developments easier in preparation for an expected influx of 25 million visitors over the course of the six-month World Expo in 2020.

The emirate has shortened the preapproval stage in hotel development by two-thirds – from six months down to two – for private developers. Fees originally in place for “change of use of land” for hotel operations have also been scrapped.

In addition, any new three- and four-star hotels that start operating before June 2017 will be exempt from a standard 10 per cent Dubai Municipality fee.

Developers can expect additional incentives and allocation of government land thanks to rising visitor numbers and improved room rates.

The Sofitel Dubai Downtown opens this month and other hotels set to launch include the Double Tree Hilton Al Barsha, the InterContinental, Dubai Marina and the second phase of the JW Marriott Marquis in Business Bay.

The Middle East is the fastest-growing global wellness tourism market and set to become the world growth leader through 2017 according to the The Global Wellness Tourism Congress (GWTC).

The GWTC is a division of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), which released new data on the Middle East wellness tourism markets at the Arabian Travel Market recently held in Dubai.

Factors driving this growth include the luxury spa hotel building boom across GCC nations and the revitalisation of indigenous practices like historic hammam and bath treatments. Wellness tourism is defined as “all travel associated with enhancing one’s personal wellbeing”. The worldwide wellness tourism market is growing roughly 50% faster than the tourism sector overall.

Anni Hood, tourism and government liaison for the GWTC, presented the

findings at the Arabian Travel Market in May. She commented: “Wellnessfocused travel is growing fast across this vast, diverse region: in the Middle East and North Africa we have the luxury spa hotel building boom across GCC nations, and the revitalisation of indigenous practices, such as historic hammams and baths. These many different ‘stories’ add up to one, big story: the fastest growing wellness tourism market in the world.”

What have been the biggest spa trends in 2014?

The biggest trend this year has been the rise in instant results treatments for the time conscious consumer. This can be seen particularly in facial treatments, with the use of machines in spas and the increase in the number of gadgets clients can buy for their home skincare regime.

What do you predict will be the biggest trends in spa in 2015?

I would say results-focused treatments will continue in their popularity as the products and equipment used in spas become more advanced and accessible to the consumer. The average age of the spa guest is also getting younger as we become more knowledgeable of the importance of damage prevention.

Do you have any exciting launches lined up that you can share with us?

Our most exciting launch for this region will be the Elemis Biotec machine which we will be launching and demonstrating at the February 2015 Professional Beauty Show. This is an amazing advancement for facial treatments not just for Elemis, but the industry as a whole.

Which product innovations have you been most excited about in 2014?

I would have to say that the Elemis Pro Intense Lift Effect treatment and products are very exciting. Targeting the Elemis user who has grown up with the brand, this range has been developed specifically for mature skin to improve the facial contours and skin firmness. A truly amazing result

What are spas looking for in a supplier?

What have been the biggest nail trends in 2014?

Nail colours change by the season, with the colour trends dictated by leading fashion houses. However, after a brief lull, nail art has come back with a vengeance in 2014 – with imaginative combinations of nail lacquers of different colors, textures and finishes. This can range from reverse French manicures, velvet manicures or rhine stones placed on beautifully designed nails.

Nails are becoming much more personalised with different colours and finishes for each finger.

What have been the biggest hair trends in 2014?

I think we were all a little bit excited to see celebrities step outside their comfort zones and start to play with their hair colour this year. We had Katy Perry, Nicole Richie, Rumor Willis and Kylie Jenner experiment with bold new colours such as hot pinks, soft violets green and blue crazy - colours. Furthermore we had the “Lob” – the long bob haircut – worn in a very effortless but stylish way by the likes of Alexa Chung and Jennifer Anniston. I think the “Lob” length is perfect for clients as cutting to this length removes the old, damaged, tired hair and adds the illusion of fullness and body.

What do you predict will be the biggest trends in hair in 2015?

I think we will be looking at the movement of the hair, and will start to think about presenting the hair in a more natural way.

For me, hair needs to be more authentic and earthy. Tones will be more honest, almost like the hair has not been coloured. It will important to place the colour so that it emphasises texture and depth in the hair. Hair will be free, natural and unpretentious.

I’d sum it up as “goodbye foils”, “hello flamboyage”.

What product innovations have you been most excited about in 2014?

For me I just can’t resist the More Inside styling line by Davines.

The products look like candy and smell like candy. The products are all parabens-free and they give moisture, bounce and texture to the hair. The hairspray from this range is like using perfume, it’s so good I’m crazy for it!

What do you think hairdressers are looking for in a product line?

What do you predict will be the biggest trends in nails in 2015?

Phew, that is a tough one, but going out on a limb, I would say “individualism”. Customers are offering their nails as a canvas for nail technicians to express their skill via nail art. Disposable nail art (stickers), different finishes and textures with flourishes of stones, metals and crystal can be used to express the customer’s personality and fashion taste. Not unlike what is happening with tattoos.

What do you think nail technicians are looking for in a nail brand?

Nail technicians are always on the lookout for the optimum combination of a product that is easy and quick to apply, durable, can generate revenue for the salon, and can challenge their imagination and upgrade their skills. Today, more than ever, with the current nail technologies such as gel nails, acrylic nails and nail art, the design palette that the nail technician can offer their customers is richer than ever.

What product innovations or ingredients are you most excited about at the moment?

LED is one of them, it has dramatically reduced the time to apply and cure gel nails to between five and 20 seconds making it extremely convenient for both the customer and nail technician.

The other exciting innovation is the new GST (Gel Suspension Technology) in nail enhancements (acrylic and gel nails) that is not only gentle on the nail bed but self levelling, leaving less dust. It is also very resilient. Artistic Nail Design products offer these amazing new technologies that provides nail technicians with an enormous degree of flexibility, for example, to be able to combine gel products with acrylic products. Now technicians are only limited by their imagination.

Use a spatula to scoop Apricot Kernel Scrub and exfoliate up to the ankles. Wash and dry the feet.

Exfoliate with Potpourri Salt Scrub up to the knees. Wash the feet and pat dry.

Establish the top point of the head and create a diagonal partings 3cm below the top of the head. Take a deep triangular section in the back and apply a thickening thermal spray.

Blow dry the hair working from the back through to the front on a high heat with a finger resting on the cold button to finish with a shot of cold hair to cool the scalp.

Blow dry the root towards the chignon base point. Continue with diagonal sections, combing the roots in the same direction.

Continue all the way to the nape.

Take an oblong section in line with the middle of the eyebrow up to the back section on both sides of the head. Start in the back and slice through section by section. Blow dry the first section back taking care that the root area is blow dried to the point where you want to place the chignon.

Work with a diagonal section through the side and incorporate some of the back. Continue with parallel diagonal sections. Repeat the same processes on both sides.

Take a horizontal section in the nape and clip the top hair away. Use a ceramic based round brush and a hair dryer with a nozzle attachment. Blow dry the mid-lengths to ends, smoothing the cuticle. Continue this process to the front hairline.

Take a diagonal section three centimetres below the top of the head to the back of the ear on both sides. Pin away the front.

Secure with elastic and two hair pins.

Brush the hair up from roots to ends, then comb through.

Brush the front section back from roots. Pick up the lower ponytail and place the top hair over. Secure with a cloth elastic and two hair pins, joining the top to the underneath. Use a comb to refine the surface of the hair.

Apply hot rollers to encourage movement and curl for ease of management. Allow the rollers to cool, then remove.

Comb the hair forwards and have an assistant place their hand on the top. Place a latch hook at 90 degrees, running along the scalp. Apply an elastic band to the latch loop, pull through and secure with a knot and a hair pin.

Separate the ponytail in two. Use one portion as padding and one portion to smooth over.

Back comb the lower portion, place in a hair net, secure with bobby pins

After The final result is an elegant, red carpet look.

Comb the top portion and place over the lower portion, fanning and spreading the hair evenly for a smooth result. Do one side at a time. Once you have finished the refinements, secure with pins. Hide the remaining tail.

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year, Sisters Beauty Lounge is one of the region’s success stories Fiona Vlemmiks catches up with the inspirational managing director Sara Abdulrazak

PB: Tell us about Sisters Beauty Lounge (SBL)’s journey to date:

PB: How do you recruit good therapists to ensure you have the right staff?

Sara: SBL was created by my mother, Shirin Abdulrazak, in 2004. A natural entrepreneur, she filled a gap in the beauty market in Dubai where a full concept ladies salon of high hygiene standards and beauty trends was needed. I joined the business in 2008 and opened a larger flagship store based on the same principles in Dubai Mall. Armed with my business degree from Boston, USA, I developed the brand further with a more prominent focus on hair and fashion trends. We then opened five more branches in the UAE and have started franchising internationally.

Sara: The team travels to the UK and Phillipines every year to meet potential staff face-to-face and conduct mini trade tests on their skills. Other than that we advertise locally for those who are in the UAE or who are visiting so we can meet them and test their skills in Dubai. We also Skype with potential international candidates for important positions and bring them over to Dubai for a short trip to continue their assessment.

PB: That’s very impressive! Can you share your recipe for success?

Sara: Research is the most important part of any business. From the outside it looks like a very easy, simple business. Yet without intense research on your clients, location, government laws and services it is very easy to become overwhelmed and fail in this business.

It’s also very important to empower your staff to make decisions and hence feel that they are a big part of the business.

PB: What do your consider to be your unique selling points?

Sara: We offer multiple treatments that can be done at the same time. UAE women are either very busy mothers or working women who have a lot of responsibilities and little time to waste. They are fully informed and knowledgeable and have high expectations for their beauty services. We offer a special station where manicure, pedicure, blow-dry, back massage and eyebrow threading can be done all at once. Most of our clients opt to have multiple treatments at once to complete treatments quickly. We pride ourselves in maintaining very clean, hygienic and disposable equipment for all treatments.
