1. Abstract The main objective of this research paper is to explain in more depth the proposed application that we have called “Task”. We are proposing a mobile app where its market, audience, and competitors, specifically in the academic field would range from 18 years old to 28 years old. Based on this proposal, the foundation to develop the UX and UI design of the application as well as its brand identity. “Task” was born with the intention of promoting a greater level of productivity and, consequently, personal growth. This analysis is held in order to increase awareness about the potential that “Task” is pursuing to have among students across the country in the academic field, bringing effective results to these consumers. The idea is to develop an app that is a better and improved version than the ones that already exist in the market, but created specifically to assist the needs of college students, that way, the app immediately gains competitive advantage expecting it to become the number one choice for students.

Key Terms: “Task”, Market Analysis, Application, Productivity, Students, Time.

2.Task: Planning Made Easy 2.1 Project Description Time is the only element in this world that cannot be bought nor recuperated, therefore, a valuable element should never be wasted. As humans, we are constantly struggling with time trying to do more with the hours that we are given every day. This last idea represents the concept of productivity, in which people and companies are constantly looking to do more with fewer resources. Productivity is the main goal that every person or any organization wants to achieve; the more we do in less time, the better we are, showing great signs of time management and efficiency, but, the reality is that as much as we all like these concepts, achieving them is difficult and challenging. To narrow it down to one specific group, students of all ages and from all different majors and fields struggle with time. It is difficult to manage classes, schedules, assignments, exams, and meetings, especially when having to balance it out with personal life, work, and other elements intrinsic of every individual. Additionally, with all the stimuli that we receive on a daily basis from social media, advertisements, friends, among others, it is very hard to concentrate and really putting the effort to finalize a task. This situation promotes procrastination, frustration, stress, and anxiety among students that once they are done with their day, they go to bed feeling they have not achieved any of their goals. As a consequence of this, students tend to lower their performance in school, fail their classes or drop out of school.

Running Head: TASK

9

With this in mind, we would like to focus on this common problem among the student population and try to offer a solution that improves their productivity and time management skills. “Task” is an app that will help students of all kinds, ages, backgrounds, improve their productivity, minimize their unutilized time and simply, helping them get things done! 2.2 Project Significance and Ideation Time management and productivity among the student population are very important. Students suffer from a great overflow of assignments and they might not count on the right tools that can help them keep themselves on track and to promote the culmination of their tasks. Therefore, we would like to create an application that can help students of all kinds, ages, backgrounds, and majors to improve their productivity, minimize their unutilized time and helping them get things done. Increasing productivity is a big concern today. The sheer volume of tasks and information that every student receives today demands the help of technology in order for management to be well executed. Adopting applications as a way to engage with team members and increase productivity is a modern outlet that facilitates coordination. With apps, every single student can improve processes and communication, reducing time and financial waste. Additionally, the app will invest many resources in its user interface and experience so any student can add, in a very easy way, the tasks that want to be achieved. Another advantage of applications is that teams can also track results and actively participate in improvement processes. This idea seems to fit perfectly in the globalized environment in which we live. In today’s world, the market has become increasingly competitive among inventors who relentlessly

Running Head: TASK

10

seek to satisfy consumer needs, which never cease. At all times they want to excel at their competitors and are driven to put their promising ideas into practice, to meet the need for updating, overcoming the fear of daring and risking a new product. According to Motta (2001) one of the major trends of today is the attraction for the new, but especially the possibility of improvement in the quality of life by the consumer, which makes it increasingly easy to meet the needs of consumers and customers needs and expectations. For a possible attraction of customers and consumers, it is necessary to invent, create, and develop something that arouses interest, that does not exist or simply update and transform something existing. Hamel (2000) says that one must always innovate, look for new products, create the need for consumption, and thus be able to stand out among the competition. Creating a new product is usually part of the idea of satisfying customers, getting more money, ease, convenience, comfort or saving time. But this idea needs to go through several processes, which will be cited, before being put into practice. The objective is to trace the path between the emergence of the new product idea and the approval of its development. “Task” will be the name that our app will carry, and even though it is not the first app focused on helping students with their schedules in the market, it will be the best one ever created. As in many sectors of the economy, the customer becomes increasingly demanding. If a solution, product, or service does not meet the criteria expected of a good product, it ends up being discarded. Building a good interface is the first step in order for “Task” to succeed in the marketplace. The use of computational elements will be fast, accurate, efficient and unambigu-

2.3 Background In this era, in which technology is evolving and ever-changing in front of our eyes, people have created the habit of continuously demanding for more. The differences between generations are more notable than ever before, to the point in which Millennials, the newest generation of young people, can even be portrayed as lazy by older generations. The conception is that Millennials are trapped in their phones all day long instead of working and being as hands-on as their predecessors used to be. The reality is that Millennials are quite the opposite of that perception, they have become an overachieving population that is just trying to meet their goals faster by using technology as an ally. As current students enrolled in a master’s program, we are also part of different generations and because of that, we have different goals that each of us wants to achieve, but regardless of these goals, we all would like to be productive in the way we achieve them. Each of us has its own personal difficulties in our lives, whether it is work-related, school-related or on a personal level. With so much to do and to accomplish, many of us struggle with managing all these areas successfully at the same time, and finding the right balance between work, school and personal life is what can define a successful person nowadays. Finding a way to increase productivity and the effective use of time is key to that success. Independently of the setbacks, we all would like to find this ideal app that can help us achieve our goals specifically in the academic area, keeping track of our due dates, projects and simply making our lives easier. As a team, we also struggle to keep up with the program and to coordinate the routine and time of four different people. With an app like “Task”, we would be able to create a routine

as well as organizational tasks that can help us achieve every assignment by pushing notifications and alarms depending on the priorities set for each task. With this in mind, “Task” will be the ultimate assistant to help students focus on what is important and to motivate you all the way to the endpoint. 2.4 Group Profile Task employees are the founder and co-founder of the organizations, the team would be in charge of managing the decision making. The of developers of “Task” will be the following: ●

Max Guidón - Interior Designer and Production Engineer. Data management and technology. UX/UI Designer. Process Developer. Writer and editor.

●

Ricardo Frias - Graphic Designer and UI/UX Designer will be responsible for the user’s interface and user experience of the app.

●

Beatriz Lee - Graphic Designer and Social Media management responsible for the overall layout design infographics materials and video editing.

●

Caroline Pereira - Art Director and Illustrator. UI Designer will be responsible also for brand development and visual identity, as well as animation.

2.5 Problem

Assuming a full-time load of fifteen credit hours, students adhering to this standard should spend thirty hours per week studying. But since its first national administration in 2000,

Running Head: TASK

13

the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has found that the average full-time college student falls well short of that standard. NSSE asks students how many hours they spend “in a typical seven-day week” on a variety of activities, including “preparing for class (studying, reading, writing, doing homework or lab work, analyzing data, rehearsing, and other academic activities),” and the results indicate that, on average, full-time NSSE respondents only study about one hour for each hour of class. Only 11 percent of first-years and 14 percent of seniors reported studying twenty-six or more hours per week. About three out of five (58 percent of first-years and 57 percent of seniors) said they study fifteen or fewer hours per week. Studies have found evidence of a pronounced decline in the number of hours that full-time college students say they study, from about twenty-four hours per week in 1961 to fourteen hours per week in 2003. A dramatic difference between undergraduate education in 1961 and today involves technology. The mechanics of information search and retrieval, and of preparing and revising written assignments, have profoundly changed since 1961. Information that previously required a visit to one or more libraries, sometimes even at other locations, is often only a few mouse clicks away today. There is one other important point to make with regard to compositional differences in the student population between 1961 and 2003. More students are now working for pay, and the number of hours worked has risen as well. Comparing the 1961 and 2003 samples, the proportion of full-time students who work increased from about one-quarter to 55 percent.

Running Head: TASK

14

Students working long hours and caring for dependents have competing claims on their time, and it is not surprising that an increase in the heavy-work population (21 percent of whom had dependents in 2003–4, according to NPSAS) accounts for an appreciable portion of the decline in study time. Another source made by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey from 2003–2014 has shown the average of a full-time student only spends 2.76 hours a day. The numbers are lower for those who have part-time or full-time, where the names of productivity have fallen to 8.5 to 19.9 hours a week (G. Opera, 2016). The reason behind the productivity decline is the fact that college is a place not just only for classes, but have a lot of different distracting activities that absorbed the productivity level producing a decline.

Table 1: Average weekday, full-time university and college students The project is related to the development of an app that can help students to manage classes, schedules, assignments, exams, and meetings in a more efficient and productive way, the main problem to solve will be focused on the performance of the app.

Running Head: TASK

15

The performance of the app involves two main aspects, the technical aspect, also known as the user experience, and the design aspect of the app, which is commonly called the user interface. The first one has to do with the way it was built or programmed. Programmers develop codes in order to achieve the desired functionality for the app; if the code does not work correctly, the app will be destined to fail. On the other hand, the second aspect tends to relate more with the aesthetic of the interface; The app not only has to work correctly but visually it must be attractive, intuitive and easy to use to all different kinds of audiences. A good interface design could draw the delicate line between success and failure. 3 Problem and Objectives Tree Analysis. 3.1 Problem Tree ●

Problem: The recent years students have drop drastically their productivity where 58 percent of college students have been reported to study fifteen or fewer hours per week, from the difference of twenty-four hours per week in 1961 to fourteen hours per week in 2014. Task provides solutions by improving their productivity, minimizing their unutilized time and balance their lifestyle.

3.3 Country Context “Task” would be launched initially in the United States of America, to later be expanded to other regions. The United States is the first country in which “Task” pretends to succeed, it is important to first analyze the country’s context in four of its main aspects: economic, political, social and cultural In terms of the economy, one of the most important aspects that help to evaluate the economic performance of a country is by analyzing its Gross Domestic Product or GDP. The GDP is one of the most commonly used measures of economic activity since it measures the value of the economic activity of a country within a specific period of time. In that sense, the GDP provides an answer to the value, or prices, of all final goods and services that are part of the economy of a nation. (Worldometers) After analyzing the second quarter of 2019, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis or BEA shows that the US GDP increased by 2.0%. Also, when the performance of the GDP is analyzed by state, the BEA shows that all 50 states increased their GDP in this second quarter (BEA, 2019). Additionally, according to The Financial Times, the US economy is expected to continue growing progressively over the next few years, performing better than many other western countries. (The Financial Times) In this sense, when the GDP is on the rise, investors from all over the world feel more comfortable plugging money in a diverse economy like this one, since it is attractive and most

Running Head: TASK

21

likely beneficial. On the other hand, when the growth slows down or becomes negative, it leads to uncertainty, unemployment and lack of investment. Same as the previously mentioned correlations between the economy and other factors like employment and the stock markets, the economy also plays a great role when it comes to education. Economic growth tends to lead to greater national and personal wealth which intensifies the resources that are going to be destined for education. This increase in resources in education also benefits back the economy becoming almost a snowball effect. According to the National Center of Education Statistics, NCES, between 2017 and 2028, undergraduate enrollment in 4-year institutions is projected to increase by two (2) percent (from 10.8 to 11.1 million students) and enrollment in 2-year institutions is projected to increase by 3 percent (from 5.9 million to 6.1 million students). (NCES) These numbers are incredibly positive to people and organizations who are considering investing in the educational sector like us. With these statistics, not only it is possible to understand the reach that “Task” can potentially obtain among these millions of students, but it gives certainty in our investment since these numbers are expected to continue increasing in the upcoming years. In terms of the political factors, the United States is currently under a very unstable political climate. Presently led by President Donald Trump, who is at this point going through a process of impeachment, has affected the wellbeing of the country and has jeopardized its institutions and the reputation of the United States with many of its actions.

Running Head: TASK

22

So far, President Trump has taken many actions that have affected the economy of the US and might continue affecting it in the near future. Examples of its recent actions can be considered the renegotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, the conversations and meetings held with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the imposed tariffs on Chinese imports and, the withdrawn from the Iran nuclear agreement, just to mention a few. Trump and his actions could become a potential threat to “Task” since the economy could be affected in an ample way by his actions. On a social and cultural level, it is possible to analyze the United States based on Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions. Psychologist Geert Hofstede created a model to evaluate and compare different cultures based on a decade of research. For that matter, Hofstede identified six (6) initial dimensions that could distinguish one culture from another and, years later, he added two additional dimensions. These dimensions are the following: 1.

Power Distance Index: refers to the level of inequality that exists between

people and power. 2.

Individualism Versus Collectivism refers to the strength of the ties that

people have to others within their community. 3.

Masculinity Versus Femininity refers to the distribution of roles between

men and women. 4.

Uncertainty Avoidance Index: describes how well people can cope with

anxiety.

Running Head: TASK 5.

Long- Versus Short-Term Orientation.

6.

Indulgence Versus Restraint. (Mind Tools)

23

Based on the previous explanation of Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions, it is possible to analyze the results for the market in which “Task” will be launched. Hofstede Insight provides the results for each of these dimensions per country and they continue to update it over time. In the case of the United States, Table 1 shows the results for each dimension. (Hofstede Insight) Results indicate that the Power Distance Index is almost 50% meaning that there is an equilibrium between a hierarchical distribution of power and a widely distributed one. People seem to understand their place in the system but at the same time there is a sense of freedom and respect for the institutions. When it comes to the Individualism Index, it is possible to see that Americans show an extremely high value of 91%. This score indicates a weak interpersonal connection among those who are not part of a core "family." People do not create close relationships among outsiders, and they tend to be very immersed in their own activities, taking less responsibility for other people’s actions. The Masculinity Index indicates that American society tends to be very equilibrated between masculinity and femininity but tending to be just a bit more masculine oriented, ranking 62% on this scale. This means that in America the roles of men and women overlap less, commonly expecting men to behave assertively. Power, intelligence and success, as well as other physical characteristics such as being strong or fast, are certain features that are considered positive inside the American culture.

Running Head: TASK

24

The Uncertainty Avoidance Index indicates that Americans also find themselves at a medium level of uncertainty ranking 46%. This means that Americans are relatively good at coping with anxiety, making a great effort to try to avoid for their lives to become as predictable and controllable as possible. The Long-Term Orientation Index shows that Americans are actually the opposite, ranking low on this scale, denoting that they can be considered a Short-Term Oriented Culture. Ranking 26% on this scale, means that people in this culture tend to place more emphasis on principles, consistency, and truth. This is also a typical characteristic of countries with nationalistic tendencies which is evident in the American culture. The last dimension is the Indulgence Index. In here, Americans rank 68% which means that they are encouraged to have free gratification from their own drives and emotions, such as enjoying life and having fun, but there is also a little bit of an emphasis on suppressing too much gratification, regulating a bit people's conduct and behavior.

3.4 Market Segmentation As we know, market segmentation is an assessment where organizations or companies have; these would prioritize the target audience that we are currently reaching out to college students. Creating an app is an innovative city that would get people going and being attracted by just the feature or even the way that makes their life more comfortable. Miami has a while rage of students around the world, making it a diverse population. The application is suitable for the reason of having the University of Miami (UM) and Florida International University (FIU) amongst the Miami area, which would give us a point to start our marketing segmentation. We want to attract a diverse population in different ages and goals the following are: Geographical Segmentation, our location would be reaching out to students with a different cultural background who are local citizens as well as foreign. Miami is a multicultural city where the culture is different when it comes to school life and work-related we are always busy when it comes to managing the time it might be difficult for them. Demographic Segmentation, the demographic section would consist of targeting students from the age of 19 - 35 years old male and female who are in the path of going to a bachelor or master program. Where their income would involve the minimum wage of a full-time job would be $17,597 per year before tax (Cordeiro,2019), at the same time as having financial aid with different background cultures. Behavioral Segmentation, in the behavioral section, the desired aspect of every person would consist of the usage occasions with the product — the circumstances with time management anything related to work, assignments, and balance.

Running Head: TASK

26

Psychographic Segmentation, most of our customer's values would be the concern of their lifestyle and time value. “Task” would turn their procrastination to be proactive and effective in their work and college tasks. 3.5 Target Market Our target market is extensive. It has managed to narrow it down to the age of 19 - 35 years old young adults, mostly Generation Z and Millennials, single independent men and women, in aspiration of being successful in their career, in advance of making their life more productive from start to finish. This time of the era, most of our audience is tech-savvy, which can give us the advantage of being part of the technology community to be used as a tool for goal achievement. 3.6 Segment Strategy Every market and company has a different approach to strategic segmentation, depending on the market's fields. The common procedures that “Task” would put to use the enterprise for internal use as well as an enterprise for firmographic. The enterprise for internal use method would be mostly the primary strategy, which is a focus on delivery product or services for the improvement of the internal productivity. Having that said, we are offering a service with the ability to promote productivity but also growth in ourselves, challenging us to push further in our achievement with life. Another procedure would consist of enterprise firmographic (industry grouping), which targets the group of populations among students community in the universities. This is related to the similar demographic segmentation mentioned in the market segmentation for consumer businesses.

Running Head: TASK

27

3.7 Market Needs As we live in a world filled out of a busy schedule with work and school-related, we are always with the need for organizational behavior. Not all the population suffers from disorganization, which might end up with the failure of not achieving their desired goal. Where our generation has a short period span, which is a whopping 12 seconds for the Millenials (Patel, 2017). These lead us that the population is easily distractions we are constantly facing in our daily life the failure of the completion of a task. Our service would provide the students with the ultimate application with automating alerts, pushing you to make the ultimate goal of either school assignments, enrollment, and even free time management in the creation of a proactive life. We as a master level class students we face every day our routine as a challenge to manage the time correctly and able to create time to work on a side project or even the conception of a company. 3.8 Market Trends Apps today are powerful tools for improving people's lives, making everyday life more practical and broadening everyone's possibilities. For users, apps are important and essential business tools, disclosure of their brands, products, and services. Keeping track of application market trends for the coming years can help “Task” team make the right strategic decisions. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are more present than we think. AI, for example, is present in chatbots. Siri is, in fact, one of the biggest proofs that machine learning and artificial intelligence are already in the app world.

Running Head: TASK

28

Growing demand for AI and learning machines in the form of virtual assistants and chatbots are in focus and should be a big part of application development in the coming years. Wearables App developers are already and will continue to develop products for wearable devices, especially smartwatches. Currently, the most invested market in this niche is fitness, but big names, like Uber, are already investing in solutions of this type. Despite this, they are still in preliminary stages. The future promises to bring more IoT devices: watches, fitness bracelets, motion tracking, and more. “Task” will be looking closely at these developments and study possibilities of adapting and collaborating with these new tools. Like every year, new things come up fast in the digital world. Application development remains popular and must integrate possibilities that once seemed impossible. 3.9 Market Growth The app market is still booming, according to a study published by market expert App Annie. The company expects that by 2020, the industry will reach $ 6.3 trillion, a 360% increase over 2018 revenues of $ 1.3 trillion. The industry must be warmed by the rise in the number of people worldwide who own smartphones. In addition, time spent on applications has grown. If the trend is confirmed, users can spend up to 3.5 trillion hours using apps by 2021. By 2021, Google's operating system (Android) revenue, combined with third-party stores, is forecast to exceed Apple's. The projection for iOS is $ 60 billion. According to an article by Fortune Magazine, among the fastest-growing application segments is product purchasing and, in general, mobile commerce, which is already happening in regions such as China and Asia in general. "Chinese consumers are nearly three times more

Running Head: TASK

29

likely to buy food and groceries using their devices and are twice as likely to transfer money using apps and up to four times more likely to spend money on their mobile phones," (Fortune 2019). Even with stagnant productivity and people doing fewer tasks than before, the use of productivity applications has increased exponentially. A 2018 study by Reuters on mobile phone use showed that the use of apps that fall into the "Utilities and Productivity" category grew by 121%, second only to the "Lifestyle and Shopping" category. 3.10 Key Customers In terms of app development, there is a growing tendency to improve the user experience by considering psychological elements. This practice, called Positive Computing, is defined as technology research and development that supports psychological well-being and human potential. Productivity applications are designed to make our lives easier, save our time, streamline our routine, boost our production and, consequently, the results. With this in mind, we can better understand who are the “Key Customers”. The key customers are constantly online, they are focused on communications, project management and constantly searching for ways to be more productive. To make things a little bit more simple, the key customers of “Task” are students/users in search of a productive mindset. 3.11 Future Markets As mentioned previously, “Task” will further develop into other English-speaking countries first. The decision to expand operations in other countries is generally intended to in-

crease turnover, expand market share, gain competitive advantage and increase profitability among other strategic objectives. However, this step has a high degree of complexity and many issues need to be addressed for such an initiative to achieve the desired success. Among the various analyzes to be developed, the crucial ones include: ●

Strong macroeconomic indicators in the country, market size, and attractiveness in the medium and long term

●

Market relevance and positive fundamentals

●

A business model in which “Task” can gain differential by leveraging its competencies

●

Characteristics of current legislation, regulatory requirements, entry barriers, and related implications

●

Market competition, competitive dynamics, and behavioral trends

●

Current demand for products and services as well as market growth opportunities

●

Acquisition targets, existing skills and also skills to be developed

3.12 Competition In order to develop a new product or service of any kind that stands out in the market, it is key to know and understand not only the market, the external environment, the consumers and prospects, but also the competitors, who are we competing against. There is already a big

load of mobile applications for everything, but especially in the area of time management, the ones that go under the category “Utilities and Productivity”. Today there are direct and indirect competitors for the “Task” app. The competition of a task management app can be not only other apps that already exist but also analog planners, post its, task lists and other analog forms that assist in planning and increasing productivity. The main problem among the existing apps currently is the performance not only in the user experience with the app functionality but also with the user interface, with its aesthetics, where many are not attractive and intuitive. 3.13 Competitors and Alternatives “Task” has the challenge to be an innovative app and will compete with several direct and indirect competitors that our potential customers are already currently buying from. Analyzing these competitors, we will be able to put together enough tools and point weakness to create a new innovative task management app that will be the best tool for college students, that is functional, effective and with great modern design and aesthetics. Direct competitors are the companies that are currently functioning in the same area we intend to enter, with similar products and services towards the academic field, where our potential customers are currently buying from: ●

With the research and the information collected from competitors that have been in the market already in the past years, even though they already have a name and a few of them a strong brand with the audience, we were able to point key weaknesses in the current existing apps. “TASK” will be a complete tool specifically for college students to increase productivity and will be differentiated by presenting solutions to the problems that have been bringing such frustration to our buyer persona that currently consumes our competitor’s products. This app intends to fill these gaps presenting innovative solutions to these problems, obtaining a great competitive advantage among companies that have been in the market already for the past years, building a much better and effective product. 4 SWOT Analysis

Our ideas would merge both actual actions in just one app from the digital to our everyday life. We are planning in the implementation of Tasks for college students that would help them along the way to their ultimate goal, whether it is a bachelor's degree or a graduate degree. Our imagination would take us to create something user friendly and eco-friendly that help us every day of our life. ●

Word-of-mouth. Once people start using the app, they most likely will start recommending it. This is the most powerful and cheapest way of advertising.

Thinking: ●

Students are excited to use this new app that it was recommended by a friend.

●

Students feel annoyed by getting ads through their email considering it “spam”.

Emotions: ●

Mostly Excited to try something that will help them achieve their tasks and goals, Positive.

Opportunity: ●

We should always offer the possibility to unsubscribe to our email list. We do not want students to feel pressured to keep receiving email of product/services that they never showed interest in.

●

Applying the feedback from our classmates, in which they mentioned that we can offer a level of customization for each student’s platform so users can use it the way that they think it will work better with their personality, lifestyle and level of organization. For that, we can do at the beginning of their experience, an easy and fun questionnaire so we can analyze the user and that way we can suggest the best experience for that particular user. We believe that this level of customization will make users more excited about the product, because there’s a level of individualism. No one will use the app the same way so each user’s experience will be genuinely unique, not a cookie-cutter product.

●

Once the Registration Process and the Customization Questionnaire is over, there should be a quick interactive video in which the user will learn how to introduce information such as tasks, goals, notes, etc., and the different visualization modes that the app offers.

●

After this point, the user should be taken to a “Home” Page where it will show all the tools that the user can use and the different project/classes.

Thinking: ●

I hope the registration process is quick and easy.

●

I hope I get the verification code without any problem

●

I hope the code works in the app and the registration phase is over.

Emotions: ●

Registration processes are never fun, especially not for students.

●

The Questionnaire to customize the app will make them excited about the app. They start to feel happier about the decision of using this app.

Opportunity: ●

To make the registration process more fun, we can start showing the potential user how the app will work once they are registered, that way, the task of “Registering” will be their first task/goal to be completed. By doing this, the user will start getting a better idea of how the app is used and how it will help he/she getting things done.

●

The opportunity of customizing the app is a great way to engage deeply with the user.

After Service Phase: Touchpoints: ●

46 Figure 14: Task preview

Figure 15: Interface Preview 7.4 Sustainable Usage Even with so many options of apps that can assist with productivity and time management already existing, and working well for the past years, Task is being developed to stand out among them. There is already an overflow of apps being created. Statistics say that in 2017 there were 2.2 million apps in the Apple Store and 2.8 million on Google Play Store, and by 2020 the mobile app industry will generate $189 billion in revenues as it is projected. With the increase in the use of mobile phones, the number of apps being launched has grown exponentially, however, it doesn’t mean all of them are good. " The key point for the success of the Task app is that it is an app created by students for students, with improved features that will most likely attend all the student’s needs. But in order to avoid being pushed back by the users over time, it is important for the developers to keep track of OS updates, the growing competition, changes in market conditions, among others, in order to prevent having the app going to the graveyard and being replaced by other competitors improvement. "

Running Head: TASK

47

There isn’t a major secret for creating a successful and perfect app, but in order to maintain itself in the market throughout the years and remain in the top rank of productivity app for students, there are a few steps that can help strengthen this startup and avoid becoming a failure or obsolete. The first step should always be focusing on solving the problem. Take into consideration the real-life problems the users might have and everything pointed in the problem tree analysis, the real user expectations, engagement rate and especially the issues users have complained about other competitors. The next step should be to establish the point of difference, or what makes this app truly different than other competitors, that will create a buzz in the market. People tend to get bored easily, we want to deliver a product that is unique. Seeking always to improve the app with rapid updates and releases and focusing on the user’s feedback is key to attract more users, improve the user experience for the ones that have been using the app, and increase the quality rates. This will allow the startup to truly meet the user’s expectation in making efficient tweaks that will really solve problems along the way. Providing a good app description at Apple Store is also important to attract those that are getting in contact with the app for the first time. It is crucial to make the first two lines attractive and informative enough so the visitors can turn into customers. 7.5 Cultural Values As a startup company, we have established our cultural values, which is part of the process of the creation of an even better environment from the executive to the employee's point of view. Cultural values are the most crucial part of how we work and communicate with others

Running Head: TASK

48

as well as to see the performance at Task. In order to create our cultural values, we have to think about the goals. Task has, which is planning made accessible as a company. We are a group of students passing to every challenge that we might have run into — the application created by group students for students. Task values the sustainable performance task offers in this time of the era, with the creation of innovation and partnership. Task, as a student base company, we pursue long-lasting performance by developing the best diverse talents students with the opportunity to collaborate in the different needs and features for each student. Team effort is part of our corporation which empowers our vision for the future in innovation. The creation of a proactive application would be shown in our platform but at the same time at our encouraging corporate students to be attracted to our happy work environment. The build of a diverse environment would generate better ideas in making more balanced decisions depending on the location. We would be active in the creation of responsible partnerships in uplifting and helping each company to success in the fields, from the promotion stand of view to the business progress. These cultural values demonstrated over time the traits and behaviors in how dedicated and passionate we are for the success of the application. We would strive for fostering innovation in our student or employee curiosity, always seeking solutions, and improving the platform according to students' feedback." Economic Sustainability One can only talk about a sustainable company if it has positive financial results. This way, in addition to worrying and caring for the planet (performing actions of reducing water and

49

energy consumption, polluting less, among other examples) and the community (implementing social projects that help people generate income around their facilities, among other cares), they must also ensure that their results in terms of being positive. Thus, “Task” must profit in order to remain in the market. The concept of economic sustainability presupposes the objective of maintaining economic growth without destroying or harming the environment (environmental and social) in which this economic growth takes place. It means operating the business in ways that achieves the expected profitability while recognizing the importance of social and environmental issues. 7.6 Advantages of Economic Sustainability • Greater financial savings in the medium and long term; • Improved image among society and consumers; • Obtaining indirect gains, as they will have a preserved environment, greater economic development and the guarantee of a better life for future generations;

Running Head: TASK

50

• Competitive advantage over its competitors. Figure 16: Economic sustainability graph It is worth mentioning the studies that consider that startups and small companies have advantages for adopting changes that represent competitive differentials. This is an advantage for “Task” because of the ability to adapt to market needs as there is room to make faster decisions than larger companies, reacting immediately to changes and market demands. Several factors influence a business to be truly economically sustainable. The pursuit of economic sustainability implies a long-term business vision and having a super app idea is not enough. Good planning needs to be done to know how it will generate profit by aligning it with the brand's business model. 7.7 “Task” Subscription Model Since “Task” is an app that will regularly update its content, a subscription service for customers will be created so they can open their app every day, being charged monthly or quarterly so that they receive full and new content without always having to be reminded to pay for it. It is also possible to offer different levels of content access for each subscription type, as did the English news network “The Economist”: the reader can choose a subscription to use only on the web, one to receive the print newspaper and one that guarantees two options. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, NCES, between 2017 and 2028, undergraduate enrollment in 4-year institutions is projected to increase by 2 percent (from 10.8 to 11.1 million students) and enrollment in 2-year institutions is projected to increase by 3 percent (from 5.9 million to 6.1 million students). (NCES)

Running Head: TASK

51

Figure 17: Task charge We predict that “Task” can get 1% of the total population of undergrad students to use it. This means, 1% of 10.8 million students, which is 108,000 students. Being very conservative and assuming that initially they will all opt for the ‘Standard” version, this means they will pay $ 0.99 per month, “Task’s” revenue will be $106,920 per month. This is using only the undergrad population and it does not consider people in High-School, Masters, PHD Programs and other types of scholar courses. It is also, only predicting that “Task” will be able to hit (initially) 1% of that population. With the correct marketing efforts, “Task” will be able to get to more than just 1%, which eventually will involve more monthly revenue. Added to the subscription plan, “Task” will also have Targeted Advertising. This won’t involve busy interfaces, with pop-up windows or any type of click-baits. The plan is to insert helpful links any time a user searches for a specific item or topic. For example, whenever a user

Running Head: TASK

52

adds to his task list that they need to make copies, “Task” will notify them with “Fedex” (or any potential advertiser) addresses nearby. Not only “Task” will monetize with advertisement, it will also be something useful and helpful for the user, without annoying or pushing them away. According to “Business of Apps” the average CPM rate in the United States is $0.24 per click. A conservative prediction is that with 108,000 users “Task” can generate an average of at least 25,000 clicks per day with a total of 750,000 clicks per month. 750, 000 clicks multiplied by $0.24 equals $180,000 of additional revenue.

Running Head: TASK

53

7.8 Diversity Inclusion When it comes to diversity and inclusion, we can separate our efforts regarding this important matter in two: internal and external. The internal way of handling diversity and inclusion refers to the way that “Task”, as a corporation, will be taking actions in this regard. For example, as an organization, “Task” will have a set list of values that will rule and govern our actions, and, one of these values will be the support of diversity. With that, we promise that our internal processes for hiring potential employees will be always based on merit and never by looks, religion, backgrounds, nor gender. We want to make our employees feel included and we want to provide an environment that makes them comfortable in their own skin and with the people that they work with. Part of this same effort will be the implementation of a no-discrimination policy, in which, as a company, we will not allow anyone under any pretext to discriminate against another employee and anyone outside the walls of our organization. This policy will be explained to any person who will be part of our organization and it will take place immediately in case it is needed. On the other hand, these same values of inclusion will be shown externally, meaning, we will take inclusion actions that will impact the users of the app. First, users will know that when they are downloading “Task”, they are counting on an organization that supports and promotes the values of inclusion. This is a positive aspect, especially among the student community that is constantly surrounded by people of all shapes and sizes. Another important action that “Task” will implement that celebrates the differences between people, is the power of customization that is offered by the App. “Task” knows and un-

Running Head: TASK

54

derstands that not everyone is the same, that we do not think alike; we simply process, retain and/or disregard information in many different ways and, instead of forcing every user to have the same experience that we have designed for them through the UX of the App, we prefer to give options that allow the user to customize its own experience. This way, users will be able to take more advantage of the App since it was customized by them to work and to help them in the way that each people consider will be more productive, and that it adapts better to their personality, lifestyle, and level of organization. 7.9 Stakeholder Analysis Task has a wide range of stakeholders that influence in the impact of the applications to the college students. Each member or section of the stakeholder would have the ability to be part of the decision making of the organization. As an organization we would satisfy the stakeholders employing interns with a wide range of knowledge about the company in making an improve where they can have an inside of the real world. Since we are a group of student we would mostly intern students this would get engagement in the the student community. In order to succeed in the market with well knowledge staff that are willing to put a little time to uplift the organizations, this would gain them the experience of work. In the other hand the board member are the person in charge of the decision making in the organization, they would be responsible for the impact and the effect of the develop and interface flow. They have the ability to create a impact in the business but also in the college

Based on the analysis made when explaining the “Task” subscription model and targeted advertising model that we intend to ensure as the App’s main source of income in sections above, we can have a better understanding that can help with. In that analysis it was mentioned that under a very conservative approach, in its first year, “Task” would be able to reach at least 1% of the total population of undergrads, that, up to this date, is equal to 108,000 students. If the subscription cost of the App is $0.99/month, then “Task” will be receiving a revenue equals to $106,920 per month. What is more, if we predict that we can get an average of at least 750,000 clicks per month on our targeted ads inside the App, we will be generating an additional revenue of $180,000/month. Combining these two numbers, we can predict that “Task” will be making a total of approximately $286,920 a month, which annually it will represent $3,443,040. On the other hand, we will have to consider the costs related to the App. The main cost associated with “Task” is the development of the app itself. According to a Clutch survey, “skipping all the factors in cost breakdown, a median price to create an app by expert agencies is $171,450” (ThinkMobiles). This is only for the development of the app but we also need to consider that once the app is upon and going, there are going to be costs related to storage services that we will have pay so users can store information and the app can work properly. If an average cost of storing is $0.1 per GB of space per month per user, with a limit of 5GB per person, then estimating that at least 108,0000 students will be using the app, we will have an annual cost of storing services of $648,000.

Running Head: TASK

58

Additionally, we will have to consider the salaries of the 4 team members that are in charge of making sure everything is being developed according to or UX and UI standards and specifications. Annually, the combination of these 4 salaries cost around $350,0000. An additional cost can include outsourced call center services for customer service. According to Team Syrow, these rates range from $0.27-$0.45/minute at low cost International agencies and the company pays only for the number of minutes for which an advisor remains on a call with a customer. This means that if we estimate that 5% of our population will call every month for approximately 5 minutes per call, we will be paying the Call Center a total amount of 240,000/year. It is also important to point out that Android’s operating system is highly fragmented, so costs for developing for this platform may be higher. An office space, with all the services needed like water, electricity, internet and office supplies can cost approximately $180,000/year. If we add all these costs, we will get a total annual amount of $1,589,450. Applying the following ROI formula, the ROI of this app will be 116.6%, which is extremely positive for such a conservative approach of revenue. ROI = Current Value of Investment – Cost of Investment x 100 Cost of Investment 7.13 Mentoring Plan Every company should have a mentoring plan, where it would help their employees to be more productive and motivated in the workflow. We, as a team of students creating an appli-

Running Head: TASK

cation for students, have the ability to express the different aspects that we have to go through in every assignment or even balancing their lifestyle. The creation of a mentoring plan would help the organization to motivate and turn their weaknesses into strengths. We will implement sessions of encouragement to the current organization, providing help, and answering unanswered questions to clarify and provide the right tools for a sufficient workflow. Meetings are a crucial part of closing a cycle or even a phase in setting a new goal to improve the current application or projects. These apply to any company active in the market. In the meeting, we would update any statistics of the process of the effectiveness of the application. As well as discussing the demanding features that every student is currently asking, not every platform would work as they desired, but here at “Task”, we do like to please them into their achievements. The meetings would be set up once a week, in the evaluation of the process and to determine the end of a goal or the start of a new one. These would set up the mood for every staff to be comfortable in their work station. Building these exercises would develop a stronger and motivated person to be part of the growth of the business. The mentoring process in “Task” has several advantages. One is that it will promote professional development in the short, medium and long term, making our employees much better able to tackle the jobs and contribute to the company's goals. Mentoring will provide support and direction, maximizing customer performance and even quality of life. In addition, the process is not heavy: the meetings are intended to be fun and fruitful. With it, it is possible to increase the integration, expand the diversity of knowledge and increase the corporate concepts of professionals in training. As you can see, the process can be useful for

Running Head: TASK

60

professionals at all levels in “Task”. It is a way to sharpen talents and make employees better prepared, bringing the self-confidence and skills necessary for success. The organization would also provide tools and services once in a month to complete a course to improve their desired skill, which will be a challenge when the time comes in a project. The program would consist of a deadline to complete the course, where it would be an advantage since most of each one of us might not know everything. These tools us be on every process where the knowledge should be shared when a challenge or obstacle might run into the process of success. As the process of organization have grown we have to be counties to the about each member preference and implementing ways to improve it (MentorCloud, 2015). 7.14 Unique Selling Point In such a broad market and with people with less and less patience to do research, TASK needs to make it as clear as possible why the audience should choose TASK over all other options. TASK’s unique sales is a productivity planning app for students made by students. It is very clear on our slogan that we make planning easy. With a Braintrust group and extensive research on what students expect from a planning app, TASK stands out for delivering what is expected from students. How they want it, in the order they want, with the tools they need and the interface they enjoy.#

61 Conclusion

The development of “Task” would generate consciousness in many college students who are struggling with time management and productivity. The analysis presented has led us to believe that the application would be successful in the right market, and during this current era of smartphones. Every section has provided us valuable information that support our thesis and proves that “Task” is a viable economic business and helpful application for a population thirsty for accessible and easy-to-use solutions. Even though there are application that offers similar services, most of them have a different purpose, which mainly focuses on the workplace environment and team members' involvement. By focusing on the student community, “Task” will differentiate from its competitors, hopefully become a leader in its own category of productivity.
