A

s another school year begins, many families are wondering what artificial intelligence (AI) will mean for their children’s Catholic education.

Many have referred to this cultural moment as a technological “revolution.”

AI is already changing the way students research, write, solve problems and communicate. Its capabilities present extraordinary opportunities and significant challenges, especially in the arena of education.

In one of his first addresses shortly after his election, Pope Leo XIV explained why he chose the name “Leo.” He pointed to his predecessor, Pope Leo XIII, whose 1891 encyclical “Rerum Novarum,” Latin for “new things” responded to the upheavals and “new things,” brought about by another revolution, the Industrial Revolution of the late-19th and early20th centuries. Speaking to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV explained: “In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor.” (Address to the College of Cardinals, May 10, 2025) As with every “new thing,” the Church is not indifferent to this moment. In every age, the Church is called to read the signs of the times and to interpret them in the light of the Gospel (“Gaudium et spes,” 4). Just as Leo XIII’s reflection on the “new things” brought about by the Industrial Revolution gave rise to the rich treasury of Catholic social teaching in the 20th century, so too, in this moment the Church has the opportunity to face the AI revolution with the light of Christ, and Catholic schools play a crucial role by responding as they always have — by offering a distinctively humanizing formation.

Already in his still-young pontificate,

Pope Leo XIV has had much to say about AI, dedicating his first full encyclical to the topic, titled “Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Age of AI” (May 2026). The Holy Father frequently made clear that the AI question is not simply a technological question but a human question.

If the first Industrial Revolution moved the Church to defend the dignity of workers, today’s technological revolution calls us to defend the dignity of the human person and to promote what is distinctly and authentically human.

The Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on Christian Education taught that “true education is directed towards the formation of the human person in view of his final end and of the good of the societies of which he is a member” (“Gravissimum Educationis,” 1). The Church has always understood that education is about far more than the transmission of information. Catholic schools have always been recognized for academic excellence and preparing students for college or careers. Important though those goals are, Catholic education seeks to form the whole person — mind, heart, body and soul — so that young people may come to know and love the truth and ultimately to know Christ, who is “the way, the truth and the life.” (Jn 14:6) No advance in technology can make that mission obsolete. Catholic schools remain firmly rooted in Jesus Christ, who is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb 13:8). Whatever changes the future may bring, the deepest needs of the human heart remain the same.

One of the greatest gifts Catholic schools offer today is something increasingly rare: silence. Authentic human formation includes cultivating the capacity to listen — to teachers, to one another and ultimately to the gentle voice of God. If our children become accustomed to constant stimulation, instant answers and endless digital noise, they may never develop the habits of reflection necessary for prayer and contemplation. Silence is not simply the absence of sound; it is the space where truth can be encountered.

Pope Francis often reminded educators that authentic education must unite “the language of the head, the heart and the hands” (Address to trustees of the University of Notre Dame, Jan. 30, 2014).

Catholic education seeks to form the whole person—mind, heart, body and soul—so that young people may come to know and love the truth and ultimately to know Christ, who is ‘the way, the truth, and the life.’” (Jn 14:6) speaks not only to what students know, but also what they love and how they live.

For this reason, Catholic schools are deeply committed to the formation of conscience and the cultivation of virtue. Young people must learn not only how to think critically, but how to discern wisely. Without moral formation, even the most powerful technologies can be misused. A person who lacks the virtues of prudence, justice, courage and temperance will struggle to use AI responsibly or to recognize what is true and good, even in the most sophisticated AI-generated response.

As Pope Leo XIV writes in “Magnifica Humanitas”: “No computational system, however sophisticated, can create a heart that gives itself, or a conscience that discerns good from evil. Even when machines excel in efficiency, a human face that asks to be gazed upon remains the center of our history” (233).

Artificial intelligence may someday answer nearly every factual question a student can ask. It cannot answer the most important questions: What is the purpose of my life? Why should I choose goodness over selfishness?

How do I become a saint? Those answers are discovered not through algorithms but through encounter — with truth, with authentic human relationships and ultimately with the living Christ.

Teachers do far more than explain lessons or assign grades. Together with parents, they accompany young people towards becoming who God has made them to CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO | SEPTEMBER 2026

be. They help form students whose minds seek truth, whose consciences are well formed and whose lives are marked by sanctity.

AI will no doubt continue to become ever more efficient and yet every child will still long for truth, goodness, beauty, friendship, love and sanctity. Every child will still be called by God to become a saint.

Catholic schools play an indispensable role in that mission by offering an authentically human formation that shapes the intellect, forms the conscience, cultivates virtue and leads every student toward the One in whom everything human finds its fullest meaning, something no algorithm or chatbot can replace.

I remain deeply grateful to the families who entrust their children to our Catholic schools and to the principals, teachers, pastors and staff who share in this sacred ministry each day. Thank you for the witness you give and the lives you help shape. Be assured of my prayers as together we begin another joyful year of forming young people to know, love and serve Jesus Christ. ■

Parish outreach ministries serve dual purposes. They help meet tangible human needs in local communities and offer opportunities for missionary encounter.

NEIGHBOR2NEIGHBOR St. Ignatius Parish, San Francisco Barbara St. Marie started the ministry decades ago with the idea of “building up a supportive community within our parish rather than outside of it.”

Collecting and delivering food and clothing to shelters is important work, said the longtime parishioner.

But “that doesn’t touch the lives of our parishioners,” she said, many of whom are lonely, single or elderly, maybe all three.

Neighbor2Neighbor is a volunteer force of about 150 parishioners dispatched to serve fellow parishioners in a variety of ways. It might be a one-time request from someone unable to drive to a medical appointment, get to a grocery store or even change an outof-reach light bulb. It can be a short-term need like bringing meals to a family with a new baby, or an ongoing request, like picking up an elderly parishioner for Mass each Sunday.

The ministry is distinguished from other outreach ministries in that it is not based on financial need, said St. Marie. “It’s that connection with another parishioner that is the important thing,” she said. Jo Gabrielle, a Neighbor2Neighbor volunteer, agrees. “Reaching out reminds us that we are one body united in faith and care for one another.”

Jesuit Father Greg Bonfiglio, pastor, said the neighborly ministry benefits the whole parish, and gives parishioners the opportunity to live out the corporal works of mercy.

“I am both grateful for and proud of the ministry of Neighbor2Neighbor,” he said.

LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS SUPPORT GROUP Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, San Francisco They may or may not be parishioners of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. They may not even be Catholic, but what the men and women who meet on the first Friday of every month have in common is a life-threatening diagnosis and the need for spiritual support.

Deacon Christoph Sandoval launched “Strength for the Journey” a decade ago, as a support group for those facing their own mortality after a diagnosis of a serious illness. It offers accompaniment to those facing the physical challenges of illness and the human emotions that go along with it, and an opportunity to draw closer to God at the same time.

The group leans on the word of God, the sacraments and one another for comfort and guidance.

“The group setting fosters connection, prayer and mutual support, reminding each person that they are not alone on their journey,” said Deacon Sandoval.

Participants are offered guidance rooted in Catholic social teaching and can receive practical assistance in preparing an advanced health care directive that honors both the values of their faith and their personal wishes for medical care.

“Strength for the Journey” meets on the first Friday of every month from noon-1:30 p.m. in the basement level of the cathedral. All are welcome.

Transitus of St. Francis

E

very year Franciscans around the world commemorate the final hours of the man who was and is their inspiration, Francis of Assisi, for as the Book of Sirach says: “Call none happy before death, for how they end, they are known.” (Sirach 11:28) These words guide the celebration this year of the 800th anniversary of Francis’ death.

We have already marked the eighth centenary of the confirmation of his Rule of the Friars Minor (Nov. 29, 1223) and his erection of the first Christmas crib at Greccio (Dec. 25, 1223). We have celebrated the anniversary of his receiving the wounds of Christ, the stigmata (September 1224) and his composition of his most famous writing, “The Canticle of Brother Sun” (1225). But the anniversary we mark this year is the most important of all: we remember how Francis of Assisi died, because all the events of the saint’s life are given meaning and confirmation by his death.

For the friars and friends of the little poor man of Assisi, Francis’ death was a continuation of his journey in this life, a journey begun with his baptism, but given depth and meaning by his conversion and subsequent living of the Gospel life. Since death is a necessary part of the journey of any Christian, Franciscans from the beginning have always spoken of the Transitus, the passing over of St. Francis from this life to the next.

Francis completed his transitus on the night of Saturday, Oct. 3, 1226 (note: in medieval reckoning, the late evening was considered the beginning of the next day, which is why St. Francis’ feast day is

celebrated on Oct. 4.) The circumstances surrounding this transitus, the events leading up to Francis’ death, were his final and most powerful sermon. The choices he made and the words he spoke in the days before his death are remembered as his final legacy for his followers, the church and the world.

Francis of Assisi had been sick for several years, and by the summer of 1226 he knew he was coming to his end. This was confirmed by his doctor, who after trying to avoid the question, told him plainly that he would die either in late September or early October.

Thus, the Lord gave Francis time not only to prepare himself for death, but to help others understand what death should mean for a follower of Christ.

Francis wanted the way he met death to embody the Gospel values he had tried to live. As he neared his end, the people of Assisi wanted to keep their saint in the bishop’s palace, surrounded by armed guards, to keep him comfortable and make sure his body was safe behind the walls of the city.

Francis, however, had chosen years before to live without the protection of walls, in simplicity as a poor man, and so he had his brother carry him out of the bishop’s palace, beyond the walls of Assisi down to the plain below, to the small church of St. Mary of the Angels, the Portiuncula. Francis wanted to meet Sister Death after praying in that simple church that he had helped rebuild and then was carried to a hut made of branches and mud.

There were friars around him who had disagreed with him about the direction of his order, and who had caused him much pain and anguish. Francis wanted to die among them and bless them all, because these were the brothers the Lord had given him.

The dying saint also showed that he was

grateful for and acknowledged the help that many others had given him in his life. One particular friend, Lady Jacopa de Settesoli, arrived to bid him farewell and provide the necessary items for his funeral. He not only accepted her gifts, but told the brothers to let her into the cloister, calling her “Brother Jacopa.” Francis also accepted from Lady Jacopa a special treat, one of her almond cookies which he loved.

As he lay dying, the Poverello had the brothers sing his “Canticle of Brother Sun,” which included praise of God for “Sister Death,” who was not to be feared precisely because she had been embraced by Jesus Christ Himself. Francis also had the brothers read from the Gospel of John those chapters that dealt with the Last Supper and the passion and death of the Lord, to keep himself grounded in the Gospel life he SEPTEMBER 2026 | CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO

had tried to live for more than 20 years. In humble imitation of Jesus, Francis even broke a small loaf of bread into pieces to share with all those who were present.

Francis wanted to die in the same poverty he had embraced in front of the world, so he was grateful when his guardian reminded him that the habit he was wearing was not his own, but was only lent to him. Francis had sung in his “Canticle of Brother Sun” how Sister Mother Earth was given to us by God to govern and sustain us, and so he asked that after his death his body be laid briefly naked on the ground.

St. Bonaventure tells us: “Finally, when all God’s mysteries had been accomplished in him, his holy soul was freed from his body and assumed into the abyss of God’s glory, and Francis fell asleep in God.” Francis had invited all creation to praise God, and so Bonaventure adds: “At the hour of the holy man’s passing, a great flock of larks gathered over the roof of the hut, and by their song they offered testimony of the glory of the saint, who so often had invited them to divine praise.”

The friars who were present, as well as Lady Jacoba and citizens of Assisi, told the world about how Francis of Assisi had died. They recognized that his death had been consistent with his life. The Lord had given an example through this poor man of what it means to embrace death as a follower of Christ. For this reason, throughout the world the passing of Francis of Assisi from this world into God, his transitus, has been a moment of profound prayer and reflection, something to be pondered in faith, hope and charity.

This transitus will be celebrated in many places, including the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and our own Porziuncola Nuova, on the evening of Oct. 3. Everyone is invited to join in this event, both solemn and joyful, to thank the Lord for St. Francis, but more importantly to reflect on their own lives as Christians, how to live each day in testimony to the love of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We pray that Saint Mary of the Angels might guide us all in fulfilling the words of St. Francis: “I have done what Christ gave me to do; may He show you what is yours.” ■ CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO | SEPTEMBER 2026

atholic San Francisco magazine received 16 awards from the Catholic Media Association during its annual conference held June 16 – 19 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The awards recognized excellence in journalism, photography and design.

The winning entries reflected a broad range of coverage including parish life, Catholic education, vocations, charitable outreach, archdiocesan ministries, informative features on AI and new sustainable options for Catholic burials.

While the awards recognized the storytellers, they reflect collaboration with parishes, schools and ministries to share the many ways God is working in the local Church.

“The Catholic Media Association awards are a recognition of the vibrant faith communities we are privileged to serve and cover,” said Peter Marlow, executive director of communications for the Archdiocese of San Francisco and editor of Catholic San Francisco magazine. “Every story begins with a parish, school, ministry or individual who is living the Gospel in a significant way. We are grateful for the opportunity to share those stories with our readers.”

Book by mountaineer priest illumines theology in nature

W

hen gazing upon a mountain, there are two prevailing explanations for how it came to be: either it is a self-subsisting mass of land that formed over millions of years by pure chance, or it is a meticulously crafted part of a world rife with the clear design and intent of a creator.

In other words, either it is pure nature, or it is pure creation. These two words themselves bespeak two different worldviews, both having important implications of their own.

The dichotomy which these two worldviews present is explored in a new book by Father John Nepil, a Coloradobased priest and professor who recently gained recognition after successfully celebrating the holy Mass atop the summits of all 54 of Colorado’s 14er peaks.

Corresponding with the completion of this mountainous task, Father Nepil took up the additional challenge of spending 31 straight days in the Rocky Mountain wilderness to do a thru-hike of

the 567-mile long Colorado Trail. It was this hike that prompted his writing “To Heights and Unto Depths: Letters from the Colorado Trail,” in which he recalls the triumphs, mishaps and struggles he and his ragtag group of companions experienced along the trail. It interposes astute theological reflections that invite the reader to go higher and deeper into the Christian faith.

“Growing up in Colorado, I always had a love of the outdoors and spent time out here, but I was nominally Catholic and did not have faith,” Father Nepil said. “And so one of the questions that I carried with me after I had a conversion in my senior year of high school was, what kind of worldview do you have to have in order to encounter God in creation? Because a lot of people don’t encounter God in creation. There’s no connection.”

That worldview, as Father Nepil discovered, is a distinctly Christian one. The Christian worldview of nature, rooted in Christ, is one that ›

Having that reverence that all things are a gift, that’s a big part of our worldview as Catholics and how we approach things. This [all] doesn’t have to be. That’s the difference between creation and nature. Creation is a gift.”

FATHER JOHN NEPIL understands that mountains, plains, streams, oceans — all that can be found in the natural world — are pure gift, created by God, and ultimately point toward Him. “The being of creation is revelatory,” Father Nepil explained. “It’s revealing itself, it’s disclosing itself. We just have to let ourselves do that, and the encounter with God in and through creation, and especially Christ, the Logos, that’s all integral to it.”

Recognizing Christ as the Logos — that which undergirds and sustains all of creation — is essential to the Christian worldview of nature. It is through this lens that Christians can most effectively articulate these deep truths to a secularized society that largely interprets nature not as created gift, but as something that “just is” with no deeper meaning.

“The key to our understanding nature is that God created all things through the Logos: Christ,” Father Nepil said. “He is the word, and [as we see] in John chapter 1, ‘the word’ in Greek is Logos. Logos really means reason, meaningfulness, intelligibility. So the grammar of creation is actually Christ, and the meaningfulness of it is located in him.

“And the Logos becomes flesh; as we hear in John chapter 1, the word became flesh. And so the incarnation,

the incarnate Logos, is the interpretive key that Christians bring to understand creation: What does it mean, why is it here, what is the significance? Because we were made for meaning. We live on the bread of meaning. That’s how our souls exist.”

An integral part of Father Nepil’s ministry as a priest is taking willing parties on rigorous hikes “to the heights,” as it were, to give them an opportunity to truly partake in the gift of creation. No phones, no screens, no distractions; just the created encountering the creator.

“Technology has really stiffened the human experience. It’s kind of changed it,” Father Nepil stressed. “We have to find ways of re-immersing ourselves in creation really deeply, and in the backcountry and the wilderness, there’s a whole landscape where we can encounter God, but we have to get the right spiritual disposition and then go and really let it impress itself upon us.”

The secularized worldview of nature seeks to explain everything through science and empirical evidence, devoid of any deeper, cosmic purpose.

Conversely, part of the beauty of the Christian worldview of creation is the acknowledgement of the great mystery of God and how the created world is but a window into the grandeur and majesty of the divine creator.

“The idea of a window is actually a great image because it’s iconic,” Father Nepil said. “It’s just something of God. It expresses something of Him.” The travel narrative that “To Heights and Unto Depths” tells is filled with many thrilling and sometimes funny moments — such as when a wild moose tried to become an altar server during a mountain Mass. However, it is also full of moments that describe the unknowable beauty of creation and how God can constantly be encountered anew through it.

“There was an experience on a mountaintop in the middle of the night while we were on the trail,” Father Nepil recalled. “It was just one of these magical moments where you couldn’t see a light anywhere and you’re standing on top of a mountain. It was a really powerful experience of the transcendence and the beauty of a world that is just so expansive and so unbelievable and so majestic.”

While such a sight is likely to be appreciated by anybody with a beating heart, it is the Christian whose appreciation turns to reverence, which ascends higher into the mind and deeper into the heart, because they recognize these splendors for what they truly are.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today, we celebrate World Mission Sunday, a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to proclaim the Gospel to all nations. It is a day when Catholics around the world unite in prayer and solidarity to support the missionary work of the Church. We are all called to be a part of this mission work. In His last words before ascending to heaven, Jesus told us, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19), and for 2,000 years the Church has been at work in this task. And we are far from finished! Two-thirds of the people alive today – 5.5 out of 8.1 billion – still have no relationship with Christ or His Church. Bringing people to Jesus is the work of the Church, and all of us together have a part to play. Today, we have a singular means to do so: World Mission Sunday.

The second collection we take up on World Mission Sunday helps extend the Church’s missionary work to places where the Church barely exists, where the Gospel has never been heard before, and where the Church is too young, too persecuted, or too poor to sustain herself.

reminds us of the importance of the missions. While many know him best for his TV presence, books, and charismatic eloquence, he repeatedly said, “My greatest love has always been for the missions of the Church.” For 16 years, as National Director of The Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States, he poured his talents into World Mission Sunday and distributed the proceeds diligently to the missions. We can surely count on his intercession for World Mission Sunday 2026.

Pope Leo XIV spent a large part of his priestly ministry as a missionary in Peru, serving communities in the Andean highlands and rural villages, and has noted how dependent he was on the support of the Church universal. Last year, he became the first pope in history to record a short video that could be played before Mass, in which he appealed, “Please help me help missionaries everywhere.”

That is what World Mission Sunday does: to help Pope Leo care for the 1,130 missionary dioceses and territories under his supervision through the Dicastery for Evangelization.

Please respond to his appeal as generously as you can. I am praying that World Mission Sunday will be a blessing for our Archdiocese and help foster increased zeal for the missions within all of us. Let us pray together that the Holy Spirit will renew in us the fire of the early Church, that we might truly be One in Christ, United in Mission, and that we will grow in missionary awareness, solidarity, and responsibility.

Couple follows “God’s Influencer” back to the Church

n Sept. 7, 2025, the day St. Carlo Acutis was canonized by Pope Leo XIV, Johnny Guerra and Lismeth Pesce stood on the fringes of their childhood faith, neither all in nor all out of the Catholic Church — or any other for that matter.

One year later, the pair are firmly rooted in parish life at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Redwood City where they are leading the development of a new ministry in the “millennial” saint’s name. With the support of new pastor Father Luello Palacpac, they hope to inspire parish youth to follow the example of St. Carlo in living a Eucharist-centered life. That’s what they did.

“The thing about St. Carlo, and it’s a key point in our reconciliation with the Church, is the simplicity of how he explained the Eucharist,” said Pesce, 52. “When you look at something through the eyes of a child, you understand better.”

Father Palacpac said that “Carlo reminds us that the Eucharist is not simply something we receive, but someone we encounter who transforms our lives. I am grateful for the faith and generosity of Lismeth, Johnny and all who have responded to this call.”

Born in Venezuela and educated in Catholic schools by Italian nuns, Pesce was raised in a family more culturally Catholic than practicing, as Carlo Acutis’ had been. In 2014, she met Guerra, 44, a second-generation Mexican-American cradle Catholic from Redwood City. He had parted ways with the Church in his 20s because he couldn’t reconcile some Catholic teachings, most notably the core belief that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. Guerra and Pesce moved to Southern California and joined a well-known Christian “megachurch” where the grape juice-and-crackers communion service was symbolic, not sacramental. In time, they became disenchanted with that church and returned to Redwood City where their faith lives, they said, became “essentially dormant” between 2020 and 2024.

“We were endlessly scrolling for something we couldn’t find,” said Guerra. Pesce learned about Carlo Acutis in early 2025 months before his canonization.

LISMETH PESCE The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministrysponsored event held at St. Paul Church included presentations by Father Tom Martin, pastor of St. Paul, St. Philip the Apostle, and St. James Parishes (the Noe Valley cluster), and Father Peter Zhai, SVD, director of Chinese Ministry.

“The Holy Spirit gave us the incredible gift of a child to unlock the mysteries of our faith,” Father Martin said that day. The day also included reflections, a Eucharistic miracles exhibit, Mass, Holy Hour and veneration of relics of St. Carlo Acutis.

“I said to Johnny, ’We are grown adults and not going to church at all.

St. Carlo is showing us the way, why we are not following it?’” she said.

‘BECOME WHAT YOU RECEIVE’ Catholic San Francisco met Guerra and Pesce in May at “Carlo Acutis Day,” an archdiocesan event promoted as a “a family encounter with the Eucharist through the witness of St. Carlo Acutis.” The self-taught computer programmer who died in 2006 at age 15 had an innate devotion to the Eucharist, calling it his “highway to heaven.”

PURSUING HOLINESS TOGETHER Encountering St. Carlo in the months before and after his canonization unexpectedly transformed their lives in every possible way. The unmarried couple of more than 12 years now live in chastity as they commit themselves fully to their faith and discern God’s will for them.

“What began as two separate journeys has become one shared path centered on Jesus in the Eucharist and a common desire to pursue holiness together,” Pesce said.

They said words can’t adequately describe what they each experienced their first time before the Blessed Sacrament in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish adoration chapel. But they finally understood the St. Carlo Acutis’ devotion. After his canonization, they went immediately to confession – the first time in decades for both – and began attending Mass and praying the rosary daily. They also “began saying yes to everything” at the parish, Guerra said.

“Their joy is evident,” said Maria Cornell, director of liturgy. “I’ve seen firsthand the fruits of the time they spend with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration.”

Guerra, a graphic designer, created a vertical banner honoring St. Carlo and prayer cards for parish schoolchildren with a prayer they wrote themselves.

Father Andy De Guzman, administrator of Our Lady of the Pillar Parish, spent a year at OLMC before the new pastor’s arrival July 1 and saw Guerra and Pesce walk the young saint’s path back to the Church.

Archbishop Sheen A saint for the media age

his month, a towering figure in American Catholicism whose intercession has been sought for several decades will take a crucial step toward canonization.

The beatification of Venerable Fulton Sheen on Sept. 24 in St. Louis is expected to draw tens of thousands of faithful from all around the country. His cause for canonization was opened 24 years ago in 2002, and indeed, the bestowment of the title of “Blessed” has been a long time coming for the prelate.

Archbishop Sheen’s rich legacy of faith is filled with many memorable accomplishments, the most notable of which was leveraging mainstream media to bring the

boy for a Mass celebrated by Bishop John L. Spalding of Peoria, Illinois. At one point, he dropped a wine cruet, shattering it on the ground. After Mass, Bishop Spalding approached the frightened boy, but instead of reprimanding him, he gave him some kind encouragement and made two prophetic predictions about him: that he would someday study at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, and that he would one day be “just as I am.” Both would come true.

Sheen was ordained a priest in 1919 and through subsequent years of study at Catholic University of America and the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, he quickly became a renowned philosopher. He would go on to teach at several Catholic universities

He truly was a gifted preacher, a fierce evangelist and arguably one of the most influential American Catholics of the 20th century.

Born in El Paso, Illinois, on May 8, 1895, young Fulton had a relatively humble upbringing living on a farm with his parents and three brothers. Even at a young age, Fulton showed promise; indeed, he seemed destined to be a priest. One time, at the age of 8, a young Sheen was serving as an altar

and was eventually consecrated a bishop in 1951. He served as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of New York until 1966, when he was then appointed bishop of Rochester.

He only served there for three years before his retirement in 1969. Despite his episcopal duties, he remained incredibly active in the wider Church throughout his episcopacy, gifting the world at large with his profound spiritual depth.

As a pastor, Archbishop Sheen was caring but firm in his approach, and his preaching resonated with Catholics and non-Catholics alike. He used the media of the time to spread the message and teachings of the Church, first via radio starting in 1930 and then through television starting in 1951. n December 1726, Pope Benedict XIII canonized nine saints, including St. John of the Cross, the Carmelite mystic; St. Aloysius Gonzaga, the Jesuit scholastic; and St. Peregrine, the patron saint of those suffering from cancer. Two of the nine saints are less well known, yet they have a deeper connection with the Archdiocese of San Francisco: St. Francis Solano and St. Turibius of Mogrovejo.

St. Francis Solano (1549–1610) was a Spanish Franciscan friar. In 1589, at the age of 40, he sailed to the New World. For 20 years, he preached the Gospel in Tucumán (present-day Argentina) and Paraguay after learning the dialects of the indigenous peoples in a remarkably short time. He later served as superior of the Franciscan mission in Lima, Peru, where he died. When the Franciscans evangelized California, they named the northernmost mission after him in 1823. Mission San Francisco Solano is now part of Sonoma State Historic Park, less than 30 minutes from Novato and Petaluma.

St. Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538–1606) was a Spanish prelate who served as Archbishop of Lima from 1579 until his death. Upon arriving on the coast of Peru as the newly appointed archbishop, he began a 600-mile journey on foot to Lima, baptizing and teaching the indigenous people along the way. During his episcopate, he traversed his entire archdiocese on foot three times, covering a territory of about 180,000 square miles and visiting every parish regardless of the weather. He implemented the reforms of the Council of Trent by founding the first seminary in the Americas, promoting the formation of local clergy, and

publishing a catechism in the languages of the indigenous peoples. He also defended the rights of indigenous Peruvians against abuses by Spanish civil authorities.

In fact, Pope Leo XIV has a special devotion to St. Turibius. In 2014, on the eve of his episcopal ordination as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, the future pope traveled about 30 miles to a small town and spent the night praying before the relics of St. Turibius. In his recent audience with the bishops of Peru, Pope Leo held up St. Turibius as a model bishop, one who had “so much love for everyone, that he held them in his heart as if he were the father of each one.”

How, then, are these two saints connected with our archdiocese?

The simple explanation is that these saints were originally celebrated in the churches of California in much the same way as they were in Mexico. In a previous edition of Catholic San Francisco, we introduced the feast of Our Lady of Refuge of Sinners celebrated on July 5. Like that feast, the celebrations of St. Francis Solano, St. Turibius and St. Philip of Jesus were preserved in the local archdiocesan calendar after California became part of the United States. For reasons now unknown, however, the celebration of St. Philip of Jesus was dropped from the calendar in the beginning of the 20th century.

The liturgical reform following the Second Vatican Council called for a reduction in the number of locally observed feasts. Consequently, St. Turibius is no longer included in the local calendar of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Among the feasts inherited from Mexico, only St. Francis Solano and Our Lady of Refuge of Sinners survive on the local calendar (Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated throughout the United States). St. Francis Solano is now observed on July 24 in the Archdiocese of San Francisco as an obligatory memorial.

Of family, faith and fog New book chronicles San Francisco parish’s immigrant roots

ather Joseph Illo spent the summer of 2025 on sabbatical in an Irish farmhouse writing a book on Star of the Sea Parish. It was a fitting, if coincidental, incubator for a story rooted in the faith of 41 Irish farming families who built a church in the foggy outskirts of San Francisco.

“It gave me context for the first few decades of my own parish history,” he told Catholic San Francisco.

As the city’s closest altar to the Pacific Ocean at the time, the new parish was named after Our Lady, “Star of the Sea.” Father Illo, its 10th pastor, published “Star of the West” in May to dovetail with this year’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Francisco. The 120-page volume follows the course of the parish’s 138 years through pastoral feats and challenges, natural disasters, school openings, demographic and cultural changes, to its current upswing.

The story, he said, follows the “waves of human migration” precipitated by historic local events, including the discovery of gold in California in 1848 and the Great Earthquake of 1906.

“This parish’s history is the story of men and women providing the things of God to these migrants, doing what the Catholic Church has always done: following people wherever they go, setting up missions and churches to provide word and sacrament,” he said in the book’s introduction.

“PNEUMONIA GULCH” Longtime parish administrator Carmen Tickler helped Father Illo’s research for the book with archival materials and knowledge culled from more than 25 years on the job.

Early Irish immigrants settled in a desolate area on the fringes of San Francisco where ranch land was cheap. Shifting sand dunes, cold winds and dense fog earned it the nickname “Pneumonia Gulch.”

Star of the Sea’s first two pastors died of pneumonia, both at age 51.

So faithful were the isolated inhabitants of these “Outside Lands” that they traveled 4-6 miles east to the city’s parishes for Mass.

“Sunday would find parishioners in vehicles of all kinds wending their way through Calvary Cemetery (later relocated to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma) on a road often made barely passable through mud and water,” the book states.

A Star of the Sea mission of Holy Cross Parish (now closed) was established for them, and the first Mass held Easter Sunday 1887 on the second floor of Farrell’s Dance Hall.

Families appreciated being able to attend Mass within a mile of their homes, but the mission priest knew from the clinking glasses and bar chatter below that “a more recollected setting for the Holy Mass was needed.” A wooden, 500-seat church was built and dedicated on Palm Sunday 1888.

FATHER JOSEPH ILLO Father John Coyle, the first native San Franciscan ordained to the archdiocese, became the first Star of the Sea pastor at age 38.

The 1906 earthquake, ironically, fueled the parish’s explosive growth. Many of the families left homeless by the ruins in the city center sought refuge in camps set up providentially within blocks of Father Coyle’s church. In 1894 when he began, baptisms numbered 33. In 1908, his last year as pastor, there were 157.

The building of a larger church and new schools to serve the growing parish and adapting to change would be the work of Star of the Sea’s successive pastors, including Father Illo.

THE STORY OF ‘EVERY PARISH’ Father Illo said his intention was not to simply document historical milestones, but to produce something that “would be valuable to readers.” It seems that thing is hope. In the last dozen years, Masses and families are larger again at his parish. New schools have opened and are thriving.

This is, in some ways, “the story of every parish,” said Father Illo, “giving hope that every parish, even those at their lowest ebb, can realize a flood of energy and grace through God’s word and sacraments.” ■ For more information visit starparish.com.

From medical aid in dying to ’death by organ donation’ A Catholic response to a troubling proposal

ust when it didn’t seem it could get any worse, an article in the highly respected New England Journal of Medicine is floating an appalling expansion of physicianassisted suicide: death by organ donation.

Death by organ donation patients who have chosen euthanasia would be placed under anesthesia and, while unconscious, would die through the surgical removal of their vital organs.

Already the narrative on physician-assisted suicide — now legal in 13 states, including California, and in the District of Columbia —

pushes the idea of not being a trouble or drain on either relatives or society as well as taking control of the end of life. The concept of death by organ donation adds another superficially appealing yet evil argument by putting forth the false idea that the death will be an actual good by giving life to someone in need of an organ transplant.

In California, the California Department of Public Health reported that 1,032 individuals died after self-administering physicianprescribed aid-in-dying drugs in 2024 — a 6.5% increase over the previous year. These SEPTEMBER 2026 | CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO

sobering statistics reflect a growing willingness to view intentionally ending life as a response to suffering.

Catholics are called to respond with both compassion and fidelity to the Gospel of life to counter this narrative of hopelessness.

As members of Christ’s Church, we are called to proclaim the inherent dignity of every human person, accompany those who suffer with love and hope and bear witness to the Gospel truth that authentic compassion never consists in intentionally causing death.

St. Irenaeus famously wrote, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” This profound truth expresses the foundation of the Catholic understanding of human dignity: every person is sacred, every life has meaning and every human being remains worthy of love and care until natural death.

Modern medicine has accomplished extraordinary things. Organ transplantation has restored health and extended life for countless patients suffering from serious illnesses. Catholics rightly support these advances when they respect the dignity of the human person and the moral law.

Yet these same medical advances also present new ethical challenges. As society becomes increasingly accepting of physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia, questions arise about the true purpose of medicine and the meaning of authentic compassion.

These concerns have become even more urgent with the recent proposal titled “Death

by Organ Donation,” which asks whether patients who have chosen euthanasia should be permitted to die through the surgical removal of their vital organs rather than through a lethal injection.

Although this proposal remains a theoretical academic discussion and is not current medical practice in the United States, it raises a profound moral question: Can an act that intentionally causes death ever be justified because it produces a beneficial outcome?

ORGAN DONATION: A GIFT OF LOVE The Catholic Church has long supported ethical organ donation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “Organ donation after death is a noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as an expression of generous solidarity” (CCC 2296).

St. John Paul II described organ donation as “a genuine act of love” because it allows one person, after death, to offer hope and healing to another.

For Christians, organ donation can reflect Christ’s own self-giving love. However, the Church teaches that this gift must always respect the dignity of both donor and recipient.

The donor must already be dead — with the clear lifelessness of the body indicating that the separation of body and soul has occurred — and death must never be intentionally caused in order to obtain organs.

This principle is known as the “dead donor rule.” Vital organs may only be removed from someone who is already dead, and the removal of organs must never be the cause of death.

THE ETHICAL PROBLEM WITH “DEATH BY ORGAN DONATION” The proposed practice would reverse this principle. Instead of a person dying first and then becoming an organ donor, surgeons would remove vital organs while circulation continues. The removal of those organs would cause death.

Supporters of the proposal argue that it could increase the number and quality of organs available for transplantation while respecting the patient’s stated wishes. They appeal to personal autonomy and the desire to save other lives.

However, Catholic moral theology recognizes that a good intention cannot justify an immoral action. Saving the lives of transplant recipients is a tremendous good, but intentionally causing the death of an innocent person — even with consent — cannot become morally acceptable because others may benefit.

As St. Paul warns: “And why not do evil that good may come?” (Rom 3:8).

St. John Paul II reaffirmed this principle in “Veritatis Splendor,” teaching that some actions are wrong by their very nature, regardless of circumstances or intentions.

The distinction is crucial. A person who donates organs after death offers a gift. A person whose death is caused so that organs can be obtained is not giving a gift after death; rather, death has become the means to achieve another goal.

HUMAN BEINGS ARE NEVER MERE RESOURCES At the heart of this debate is a deeper question: How does society understand human dignity?

independence or social benefit. Such a view risks seeing the dying person primarily as a burden or as a source of biological resources.

The Catholic vision is radically different.

Every person is created in the image and likeness of God (Gn 1:27). Human dignity does not disappear because someone is elderly, disabled, dependent, unconscious or approaching death. A person’s value is not determined by productivity, health or usefulness. The dying person remains a beloved child of God. COMPASSION MEANS ACCOMPANIMENT, NOT ABANDONMENT The Church’s response to suffering is not indifference. Catholics are called to provide compassionate care, excellent hospice services, pain management, emotional support and spiritual accompaniment. Authentic compassion does not seek to eliminate suffering by eliminating the person who suffers. It means remaining present, sharing burdens and affirming that every life continues to have meaning.

Those involved in Catholic end-of-life ministry — chaplains, clergy, deacons, health care workers and families — have a sacred responsibility to remind the suffering: You are not your illness.

You are not your disability.

You are not your dependence.

You remain a beloved person created by God.

PROTECTING THE CULTURE OF LIFE The discussion surrounding physicianassisted suicide and proposals such as “death by organ donation” reflect a larger cultural question: Will medicine remain committed to healing and caring, or will it increasingly view death as a solution to suffering? Catholic bioethics calls for vigilance and compassion by defending several essential principles: • The inviolable dignity of every human person.

• The prohibition against intentionally killing the innocent.

• Respect for the dead donor rule.

• Independent and morally certain determination of death.

• Protection of vulnerable patients from pressure or coercion.

• Continued development of compassionate hospice and palliative care.

The Church does not oppose medicine.

Rather, it seeks to ensure that medicine remains faithful to its highest purpose: serving the human person.

Organ transplantation is a remarkable expression of charity when it follows death and respects human dignity. But organ donation must remain a gift of love, not a reason to intentionally cause death.

In an age tempted to measure human worth by efficiency and usefulness, the Catholic faith proclaims a timeless truth: every human person possesses an inviolable dignity because every person is created by God, redeemed by Christ, and called to eternal life. Authentic compassion does not hasten death but walks with the suffering person until natural death comes, surrounded by love, dignity and hope in the promise of Christ: “I am the resurrection and the life. n October, sacred relics of Saint Francis of Assisi and medieval artifacts from Saint Clare of Assisi will be displayed for viewing and veneration in San Francisco for the first time, offering the faithful three historic opportunities to encounter the legacy of the “little saint” 800 years after his death. The Jubilee events include a free six-week public viewing of the precious relics, and two exclusive ticketed events that include Mass, music, veneration, food and fellowship.

SACRED EXHIBITION IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC Oct. 16 – Nov. 28, open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The free viewing and veneration of the sacred relics and medieval artifacts of Assisi is hosted by the Knights of St. Francis of Assisi and the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It opens on Oct. 16 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption and runs through Nov. 28. The relics include the coperchio di Cimabue, or wooden cover that once protected the body of Saint Francis, his breviary and habit, the horn of the Sultan given to Saint Francis, and locks of hair of Saint Clare of Assisi as well as her breviary.

According to Angela Alioto, founder of the Knights of St. Francis, this is the first time these sacred treasures have left the town of Assisi where Saint Francis first heard God’s call to, “Go repair my Church which is in ruin.”

“For the first time in history, these sacred relics and masterpieces are coming together to the city named for him — a city we love and that has loved us back,” Alioto told Catholic San Francisco.

The power of the sacred relics is both “symbolic and actual,” she said.

“The breviaries that Francis and Clare actually held and prayed from still hold the imprint of their hands, their breath, their daily turning toward God,” said Alioto. The relics transmit a spiritual energy that “people will not only see, but will feel,” according to Alioto.

With the support of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, Alioto spearheaded the building and opening of the La Porziuncola Nuova in 2008, which is adjacent to the National Shrine. La Porziuncola is a replica of the original Porziuncola (little portion) built by Saint Francis in 1206.

PRE-OPENING JUBILEE CELEBRATION Oct. 14, 6 p.m., Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption A pre-opening gala limited to 300 guests is an opportunity to view and venerate the relics prior to the public opening on Oct. 16. The event includes a live musical performance of “Francis Lives,” performed by Luciano Lamonarca. Actor Joe Mantegna will introduce Maria Fassio Pignati, who will sing both Italian and American national anthems before guests are

treated to cocktails, chef-curated culinary stations, desserts and live entertainment in the Cathedral Plaza.

The ticketed event will conclude with a live performance by Grammynominated Italian artist Teo Bok. Actor Martin Sheen is scheduled to serve as master of ceremonies.

Misión San Francisco de Asís celebrates 250 years since first Mass and founding Generations of parishioners touched by Misión San Francisco de Asís sat side by side at a June 27 celebration of the 250th anniversary of the first Mass and founding of the mission. The Mass was celebrated by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone in the basilica and Father Jack Clarke Robinson, OFM delivered the homily. Fifteen priests concelebrated the Mass and many religious sisters were in attendance as well.

“My dear friends, it is my great joy to welcome you here today to Mission Dolores Basilica for this Mass to mark the 250th anniversary of the first Mass celebrated here of what would become Misión San Francisco de Asís,” said Archbishop Cordileone. “It is a time of great joy and thanksgiving to God for this quarter of millennia of a life of faith here in San Francisco.”

On June 29, 1776, Franciscan Father Francisco Palóu offered the first Mass in the little chapel at Misión San Francisco de Asís.

In October of that same year, St. Junipero Serra traveled up from

Monterey to formally dedicate the mission on Oct. 9, 1776. It is the sixth of the California missions and the oldest intact adobe mission chapel in the chain of 21 missions.

St. Patrick Catholic Church celebrates 175 years in San Francisco On June 6, St. Patrick Catholic Church celebrated 175 years in San Francisco with a vibrant parish celebration, which included Mass and a gala dinner.

The church predates the establishment of the archdiocese and is the No. 4 landmark in the city. St. Patrick’s was established on June 9, 1851, and the parish grew rapidly. In 1872, the parish had close to 30,000 parishioners.

In his homily for the Mass, Father Edward Dura spoke on the importance of the life of the parish centered on the Eucharist noting that a church doesn’t survive because of CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO | SEPTEMBER 2026

mortar and bricks but because of the faith of the people.

“For 175 years, generations of believers have entered this Church carrying their joys and sorrows through baptisms and funerals, weddings and reconciliations, hopes and tears,” said Father Dura. “Children were taught the faith here. Families learned to pray here. The poor found comfort here. And the center of it all was the Eucharist.”

The liturgy was held in the hall of St. George Church because the church building itself suffered extensive damage in previous years.

During the celebration, worshippers lit candles before the icon of St. George, the village’s patron saint, symbolically marking the return of spiritual life to the community and the beginning of a new chapter. Residents hope this step will help them restore their natural presence in their homeland.

atholic schools have long been recognized for academic excellence, but what is the ultimate purpose of Catholic education? While academic excellence remains an essential part of its mission, the Church has always envisioned Catholic education as something greater: authentic formation of the whole person in Christ.

The Church recognizes that authentic education must go beyond the intellect to form the whole person. “Each type of education,” explains one of the Church’s documents on Catholic education, “is influenced by a particular concept of what it means to be a human person.”

In fact, even many secular schools include this phrase in their mission statements. But a Catholic education, the document goes on to say, “calls for the fullest development of all that is human because we have been made masters of the world by its Creator. …It proposes Christ, Incarnate Son of God and perfect man, as both model and means; to imitate Him, is, for all men and women, the inexhaustible source of personal and communal perfection. Thus, Catholic educators can be certain that they make human beings more human” (“Lay Catholics in Schools: Witness to Faith,” 18). Catholic education is formation in virtue.

This past spring, teachers from every archdiocesan elementary school gathered virtually for their annual spring Catechetical Day. They were joined by Sister John Dominic of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, who spoke to them about “Not One More Thing: Virtue as a Way of Life” and the Education in Virtue framework.

“Education in Virtue is not intended to be relegated to religion curriculum or to any one part of the school day,” said Sister John Dominic.

“It is a way of life, meant to supplement and elevate everything a Catholic school does in forming young people for flourishing.” Sister John Dominic serves as executive director

principals who shared the ways they have worked to develop a culture of virtue formation in their own schools.

Teachers, administrators and pastors have been introduced to Education in Virtue slowly over the past few years through formation days and professional development, and a number of Catholic schools already integrate elements of the Education in Virtue program. Beginning in the 2026-2027 academic year, every Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese of San Francisco will adopt the Education in Virtue framework and continue to receive formation and support for integration throughout the life of the school.

More than a specific curriculum or character education program, Education in Virtue offers schools the language and a framework for cultivating the habits that lead students to holiness. Virtue formation is transdisciplinary, meaning that it is applicable to every subject and area of human formation, from religious formation, to study, to discipline, to athletics.

Parents as well as teachers in the Catholic school have access to the web content produced by Openlight for fostering cohesion between home and school formation. St. Francis of Assisi reports Perspectives from Catholic school students on topics of faith The second-grade class at St. Catherine of Siena School in Burlingame did a special report on St. Francis of Assisi in the fall of 2025. This biography and drawing were two of the many creative reports submitted by the students.

S

t. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181.

Assisi is a small town in Italy. St. Francis had a lot of friends growing up that liked to sing and dance. His father was a cloth merchant and wanted St. Francis to be just like him.

St. Francis joined the army when he grew up and wanted to be a brave knight. He was captured and in prison for a long time. He was released from prison, and he was not happy with his old life, so he went to war again. On the way, he had a dream about serving the Lord and went back to Assisi.

When St. Francis went back to Assisi, he gave all his money and clothes to the poor.

He also helped the people that were very sick, even the lepers. St. Francis preached about what God gave us. He talked about the beautiful sun, moon, stars, animals, birds and flowers. He even wrote a poem called “The Canticle of the Sun.” He had many followers called Friars Minor. St. Francis had another vision and woke up with blood all over his feet and hands like Jesus. A few years later, he got a terminal illness and died in 1226.

St. Francis taught us to love God and all He created for us and the poor and sick and all God’s animals. We should spread joy, love and peace.

St. Junipero Serra, who was a follower of St. Francis, asked to name a mission after him. St. Francis was named the patron of the Spanish presidio as well as the Franciscan mission. When the archdiocese was founded in 1853, St. Francis was its patron because of the mission and because he was so special. ■
