Gathering of Cardinals Catholic U. benefits fro m dinner By Patrick Joyce

Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, presiden t of CUA, preaches.

The largest gathering of cardinals in San. Francisco since the 1987 visit of Pope John Paul II came to the City May 2 to raise funds for scholarships to the Catholic University of America - and to help make the Washington, D.C. institution better known on the West Coast. Catholic University, founded by the bishops of the United States in 1887, is "the prestigious jewel in the crown of Catholic higher education in the United

States," Archbishop William J. Levada told the congregation in St. Mary 's Cathedral at the beginning of a Mass he concelebrated with six cardinals. While Catholic University is "the premier Catholic educational institution in our country, it is not as well known on the West Coast," he told guests at the American Cardinals Dinner, held for the first time in San Francisco. "It is my hope that it will now become better known. " CARDINALS, page 22

Charities' message: no escape clause in mandate to serve poor By Patrick Joyce The Gospel call to serve the poor and the vulnerable doesn't include an escape clause that allows us to wait until the war on terrorism is over «g«! or the state budget crisis is solved, Brian Cahill, executive director of %L Catholic Charities CYO, says. *J|JI Quoting the passage in Matthew's Gospel that begins with Jesus' words "I was hungry and you gave me food, thirst and you gave me <gj drink . . . " Mr. Cahill says, "There is nothing in Matthew or anywhere else in the New Testament that says we don 't have to care for the poor, the

vulnerable and the marginalized when there is a war, a recession or budget deficits." A homeless mother, a child born HIV-positive or a man struggling with Alzheimer's disease can't wait until good economic times return, and Catholic Charities CYO won 't wait to serve them, he said. Catholics of the Archdiocese of San Francisco will have a chance to help Catholic Charities CYO do that when a special collection is taken for the organization at Masses on the weekend of May 17-18.
