California voters appeared to be on the way to passing Proposition 8 and eliminating same-sex couples’ right to marry in California just six months after a divided state Supreme Court created the right. Voters in Arizona and Florida, also reacting to the California court decision, approved constitutional “Marriage Protection Amendments” defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. Pope, U.S. bishops send congratulations Both Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Francis E. George of Chicago, president of the U.S. bishops’ conference, sent congratulatory messages to President-elect Barack Obama on Nov. 5. Pope Benedict sent a personal message offering prayers for Obama, his family and for the United States. Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, said the message was addressed personally to Obama; the Vatican did not plan to publish it. Cardinal George applauded President-elect Obama on his “historic election.” “The people of our country have entrusted you with a great responsibility,” the cardinal said in a letter on behalf of the U.S. bishops. “As Catholic bishops we offer our prayers that God give you strength and wisdom to meet the coming challenges.”

‘Sixteen stars in four graves’ Col. Thomas L. Constantino, USMC Ret., has researched the story of why four top World War II naval officers are buried together at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno. See story, Page 10. Veterans’ Day services will be held at the cemetery at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 as well as at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, also at 11 a.m., in the Star of the Sea veterans section. Bishop Wang celebrates special Mass in Beijing Being principal celebrant at a recent Mass at Beijing’s Divine Savior Church represented personal and pastoral milestones for San Francisco Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang, and also signaled growing mutual accord between the Catholic Church of Rome and the Chinese government. Also known as North Church, Divine Savior is where the bishop received three sacraments as a youth – baptism, first Eucharist and confirmation. He lived with his family “just around the corner” from the church, he said. The invitation to be principal celebrant at the parish’s main Sunday liturgy also held noteworthy symbolic significance, the bishop told Catholic San Francisco. While he has visited the church several times in recent years, this is the first time he was asked to celebrate Mass, something that would have been unheard of in the recent past, he said. Bishop Wang said he was “amazed” not only that the pastor invited him to concelebrate, but that no official permission was sought from officials of the Catholic Patriotic Association, which functions as the liaison between Catholic churches registered with the Chinese government and its State Administration for Religious Affairs. “It was audacious,” the bishop said.
