“For us at Cinergia it’s highly beneficial for all these content producers to be successful, because we also benefit from higher demand. We’re currently dubbing to English, French, and Portuguese. To penetrate the European market, some Latin American distributors are pushing traditional telenovelas while others push shorter series.

Dori Media Group (DMG), for example, no longer produces stories of 150-200 episodes, but instead offer 50-60 episodes per season. “If it works well then you keep it going,” recently said to PRODU Nadav Palti, President and CEO of DMG. “It is the model that fits the current market, it’s less risky and it’s easier to sell,” he added.

Similarly, Elisa Salinas, producer and director of Azteca Novelas, said that the trend is for telenovelas to become more concentrated: short stories with fewer characters. With Mientras nos quede corazón, novela based on Disney’s Brothers & sisters, “we went for the short-series formula,” said Salinas.

Televisa launches at MipTV its second co-production with RTI of Colombia This MipTV Televisa Internacional launches Las bandidas, the new fruit bore out the deal with RTI, as well as the classic story Corazón indomable. Meanwhile the company continues to advance its other co-production projects.

Las bandidas, written by Luis Colmenares and directed by Tony Rodríguez and Santiago Vargas, stars Colombian actress Ana Lucía Domínguez (Gata salvaje, Pasión de gavilanes) and Mexican actor Marco Méndez (Triunfo del amor, La que no podía amar).

This is the second project RTI presents resulting from the co-production agreement signed with Televisa. It follows Quién eres tú, the remake of Amazonas, which incidentally Televisa adapted in 2003 under the title Niña amada mía.

Corazón indomable, starring Ana Brenda Contreras and Daniel Arenas, is an original story by Inés Rodena, adapted by Carlos Romero and directed by Víctor Rodríguez. “It’s an updated

remake and a mix of Marimar, La venganza and La recogida,” said telenovela producer Natalie Lartilleux.

She also pointed out Corazón indomable is not a realistic story: “I favor fairy tales that can become reality.” Lartilleux also said lead actress Ana Brenda Contreras “is a complete actor that has the touch the story needs: she’s playful and simple.”

2012 S ales Televisa launched several titles in 2012. The most successful were Abismo de pasión (an audience favorite in the countries it has premiered), and La que no podía amar. Amores verdaderos was successful as well, but being a remake of the Argentinean story

Action series strengthen Caracol’s presence in Europe Europe, along with Asia and Africa, is a territory instrumental to sales growth for Caracol. Exports to the region last year grew 40% compared to 2011. This success is due in part to the company dubbing many of its titles and the fact that its catalog contains several action series, which are highly sought by European programmers

Caracol recently sold to France Ô, France’s state channel, Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal, dubbed in French. “This series is one of the most ambitious and successful productions in the history of Colombian television, and it has open many markets to us,” said Lisette Osorio, International VP of Caracol Televisión.

Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal is a mega production with over 1,300 actors and close to 450 locations.

It has successfully aired in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Mexico, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Panama and Romania, among other countries.

Generally speaking, action series have done well in Europe because aside from having compelling stories, the series have fewer

episodes than traditional telenovelas.

Titles such as Made in Cartagena, La ruta blanca and La promesa have done well. The latter has already sold in Italy, Serbia, Bosnia, Russia, as well as in all Latin America and the U.S.

Caracol had a great 2012. The alliance struck with Univisión last year guaranteed a solid presence in the U.S. through UniMás. Made in Cartagena was the first Caracol title to air on the channel.

Similarly, the company is reaching the Mexican market thanks to the agreement for Televisa to produce Caracol’s stories. Televisa already adapted El secretario under the

They are now producing Canarios, the Mexican version of which will be called Libre para amar.

Another great achievement in Mexico was the DVD release of Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal, which has become the most sold in the country.

La selección is another fiction under production. It pays tribute to Faustino Asprilla, El “Pibe” Valderrama, Rene Higuita and Freddy Rincón, soccer idols who raised Colombia’s reputation across the world.

Telemundo Internacional continues to close important deals

New Telefe strategy focuses on international co-production

Telemundo Internacional signed an agreement with TVN Chile that includes the adaptation of TVN telenovelas for five years. The companies also renewed the existing agreement to distribute TVN’s canned content and formats and adapt its formats for production in the U.S. and Mexico. “We maintain the strategy of pushing the sale of cans and promoting formats, o both in some cases,” said Xavier Aristimuño, Senior VP of Sales and Business Development.

Similarly, in late 2012 France TV opened a window in its multicultural channel France Ô, and signed a three-year deal for

Telemundo to provide high-quality telenovelas. It’s a renewable agreement with a guaranteed minimum number of productions and a commitment by France TV to distribute this content in French-speaking countries.

The telenovelas included in the deal are dubbed by Telemundo Internacional in Miami. The contract also includes distribution on the digital platforms of France TV. “It is a great achievement for Telemundo Internacional after long years of working closely with French TV. For distributors in general, it’s an open door for the genre to succeed among French audiences,” said Aristimuño.

The highlight for Telefe International this MipTV is Los vecinos en guerra, co-production with Underground and Endemol, creators of the 2012 Argentinean TV mega hit Graduados. Additionally, the distributor will announce some new series. One of them will be the afternoon telenovela being created by Enrique Estevanez, the producer of Argentinean hit Dulce amor. MipTV buyers will also learn about Aliados, a Cris Morena production catering to the multiple platforms: free-TV, web, musical shows, etc. “Although the project needs further development, we want to show our progress,” said Claudio Ipolitti,

Director of Satellite Channels and International Business of Telefe.

“We want to exploit new technologies; tie secondary screens to TV. We’re working on this concept and Cris Morena, based on past successes, will bring guaranteed results,” added Ipolitti.

Leveraging high-budget, valueadded productions such as Aliados, Telefe seeks to establish alliances with partners around the world to enter highly coveted territories. International co-production is one of the goals of this new strategy, “and in order to achieve that we need to show ideas and products,” said Ipolitti.

Elastic Rights will distribute Chica vampiro in Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Greece and Turkey. This telenovela from RCN and Televideo, written by Marcela Citterio (Patito feo, Amor en custodia, Coraz贸n valiente), portrays worlds in which music and dance are key ingredients.

This is the third production of TVN of Chile for the early afternoon block. Riding the success of its two previous productions (Esperanza and Dama y obrero), the Chilean signal continues to exploit these classic melodramas.

Telemundo Internacional will be in charge of its distribution.

The Chilean version of the Argentinean telenovela Graduados premiered on Chilevisi贸n leading the primetime with ratings of 14.4.

Following suit, FoxTelecolombia is already producing the Colombian adaptation. The original version of Graduados, produced by Underground and Telefe, was one of the great successes in Argentinean TV in 2012.

En terapia 2 is already in production. This Argentinean adaptation of the Israeli series Be tipul, is a co-production of Dori Media Contenidos and TV P煤blica starring Diego Peretti, Norma Aleandro, Mercedes Mor谩n, Norman Briski, Leo Sbaraglia and other renowned actors. Dori Media has already sold this Sheleg format in 34 countries.

Telemundo Studios is co-producing with Globo of Brazil Marido en alquiler, a version of Fina estampa by Aguinaldo Silva, adapted by Perla Farías. “The story takes place in Miami. We’ve adapted a classic and romantic architecture that will give the telenovela a different look,” said Aurelio Valcárcel, EVP of Production of Telemundo Studios.

Filmedia World Entertainment, distribution house founded in 2013 by Mario Rodríguez, launched La magia del amor during Natpe. The telenovela marks the reunion of Fernando Carrillo and Catherine Fulop, 30 years after their success with Abigaíl.

Venevision International ramped up its presence in Asia with the premiere in Vietnam of Eva Luna, which debuted in early March in the primetime of VTV 6. The telenovela already launched in Japan and China and will soon premiere in Korea. This progress is the result of VVI’s strategy for Asia.

Las Vegas, distributed worldwide

by Latin Media Corp., is the new nighttime telenovela of Canal 13 of Chile. The production, which revolves around a widow and her daughters who manage a strip club, follows other network hits such as Soltera otra vez.
